Fix the missing and malformed documentation that kernel-doc and
sphinx warn about. While at it, also add some things to the docs
to fix missing links.
Sadly, the only way I could find to fix this was to add some
trailing whitespace.

Add a new device link flag, DL_FLAG_AUTOPROBE_CONSUMER, to request the
driver core to probe for a consumer driver automatically after binding
a driver to the supplier device on a persistent managed device link.
As unbinding the supplier driver on a managed device link causes the
consumer driver to be detached from its device automatically, this
flag provides a complementary mechanism which is needed to address
some "composite device" use cases.

Even though stateful device links are managed by the driver core in
principle, their creators are allowed and sometimes even expected
to drop references to them via device_link_del() or
device_link_remove(), but that doesn't really play well with the
"persistent" link concept.
If "persistent" managed device links are created from driver
probe callbacks, device_link_add() called to do that will take a
new reference on the link each time the callback runs and those
references will never be dropped, which kind of isn't nice.
This issues arises because of the link reference counting carried
out by device_link_add() for existing links, but that is only done to
avoid deleting device links that may still be necessary, which
shouldn't be a concern for managed (stateful) links. These device
links are managed by the driver core and whoever creates one of them
will need it at least as long as until the consumer driver is detached
from its device and deleting it may be left to the driver core just
fine.
For this reason, rework device_link_add() to apply the reference
counting to stateless links only and make device_link_del() and
device_link_remove() drop references to stateless links only too.
After this change, if called to add a stateful device link for
a consumer-supplier pair for which a stateful device link is
present already, device_link_add() will return the existing link
without incrementing its reference counter. Accordingly,
device_link_del() and device_link_remove() will WARN() and do
nothing when called to drop a reference to a stateful link. Thus,
effectively, all stateful device links will be owned by the driver
core.
In addition, clean up the handling of the link management flags,
DL_FLAG_AUTOREMOVE_CONSUMER and DL_FLAG_AUTOREMOVE_SUPPLIER, so that
(a) they are never set at the same time and (b) if device_link_add()
is called for a consumer-supplier pair with an existing stateful link
between them, the flags of that link will be combined with the flags
passed to device_link_add() to ensure that the life time of the link
is sufficient for all of the callers of device_link_add() for the
same consumer-supplier pair.
Update the device_link_add() kerneldoc comment to reflect the
above changes.

Currently, it is not valid to add a device link from a consumer
driver ->probe callback to a supplier that is still probing too, but
generally this is a valid use case. For example, if the consumer has
just acquired a resource that can only be available if the supplier
is functional, adding a device link to that supplier right away
should be safe (and even desirable arguably), but device_link_add()
doesn't handle that case correctly and the initial state of the link
created by it is wrong then.
To address this problem, change the initial state of device links
added between a probing supplier and a probing consumer to
DL_STATE_CONSUMER_PROBE and update device_links_driver_bound() to
skip such links on the supplier side.
With this change, if the supplier probe completes first,
device_links_driver_bound() called for it will skip the link state
update and when it is called for the consumer, the link state will
be updated to "active". In turn, if the consumer probe completes
first, device_links_driver_bound() called for it will change the
state of the link to "active" and when it is called for the
supplier, the link status update will be skipped.
However, in principle the supplier or consumer probe may still fail
after the link has been added, so modify device_links_no_driver() to
change device links in the "active" or "consumer probe" state to
"dormant" on the supplier side and update __device_links_no_driver()
to change the link state to "available" only if it is "consumer
probe" or "active".
Then, if the supplier probe fails first, the leftover link to the
probing consumer will become "dormant" and device_links_no_driver()
called for the consumer (when its probe fails) will clean it up.
In turn, if the consumer probe fails first, it will either drop the
link, or change its state to "available" and, in the latter case,
when device_links_no_driver() is called for the supplier, it will
update the link state to "dormant". [If the supplier probe fails,
but the consumer probe succeeds, which should not happen as long as
the consumer driver is correct, the link still will be around, but
it will be "dormant" until the supplier is probed again.]

Core changes:
- A patch series from Hans Verkuil to make it possible to
enable/disable IRQs on a GPIO line at runtime and drive GPIO
lines as output without having to put/get them from scratch.
The irqchip callbacks have been improved so that they can
use only the fastpatch callbacks to enable/disable irqs
like any normal irqchip, especially the gpiod_lock_as_irq()
has been improved to be callable in fastpath context.
A bunch of rework had to be done to achieve this but it is
a big win since I never liked to restrict this to slowpath.
The only call requireing slowpath was try_module_get() and
this is kept at the .request_resources() slowpath callback.
In the GPIO CEC driver this is a big win sine a single
line is used for both outgoing and incoming traffic, and
this needs to use IRQs for incoming traffic while actively
driving the line for outgoing traffic.
- Janusz Krzysztofik improved the GPIO array API to pass a
"cookie" (struct gpio_array) and a bitmap for setting or
getting multiple GPIO lines at once. This improvement
orginated in a specific need to speed up an OMAP1 driver and
has led to a much better API and real performance gains
when the state of the array can be used to bypass a lot
of checks and code when we want things to go really fast.
The previous code would minimize the number of calls
down to the driver callbacks assuming the CPU speed was
orders of magnitude faster than the I/O latency, but this
assumption was wrong on several platforms: what we needed
to do was to profile and improve the speed on the hot
path of the array functions and this change is now
completed.
- Clean out the painful and hard to grasp BNF experiments
from the device tree bindings. Future approaches are looking
into using JSON schema for this purpose. (Rob Herring
is floating a patch series.)
New drivers:
- The RCAR driver now supports r8a774a1 (RZ/G2M).
- Synopsys GPIO via CREGs driver.
Major improvements:
- Modernization of the EP93xx driver to use irqdomain and
other contemporary concepts.
- The ingenic driver has been merged into the Ingenic pin
control driver and removed from the GPIO subsystem.
- Debounce support in the ftgpio010 driver.

Add a restructured text file describing how to write drivers with support
for P2P DMA transactions. The document describes how to use the APIs that
were added in the previous few commits.

only PCI document that has been converted to restructured text at this
time.

We regularly have new NAND controller drivers that are making use of
fields/hooks that we want to get rid of but can't because of all the

So, instead of removing those fields/hooks, let's move them to a
sub-struct which is clearly documented as deprecated.

New code introduced by commit bf9346f5d4 ("gpiolib: Identify arrays
matching GPIO hardware") forcibly tries to find an array member which
has its array index number equal to its hardware pin number and set
up an array info for possible fast bitmap processing of all arrray
pins belonging to that chip which also satisfy that numbering rule.
Depending on array content, it may happen that consecutive array
members which belong to the same chip but don't have array indexes
equal to their pin hardware numbers will be split into groups, some of
them processed together via the fast bitmap path, and rest of them
separetely. However, applications may expect all those pins being
processed together with a single call to .set_multiple() chip callback,
like that was done before the change.
Limit applicability of fast bitmap processing path to cases where all
pins of consecutive array members starting from 0 which belong to the
same chip have their hardware numbers equal to their corresponding
array indexes. That should still speed up processing of applications
using whole GPIO banks as I/O ports, while not breaking simultaneous
manipulation of consecutive pins of the same chip which don't follow
the equal numbering rule.

Certain GPIO descriptor arrays returned by gpio_get_array() may contain
information on direct mapping of array members to pins of a single GPIO
chip in hardware order. In such cases, bitmaps of values can be passed
directly from/to the chip's .get/set_multiple() callbacks without
wasting time on iterations.
Add respective code to gpiod_get/set_array_bitmap_complex() functions.
Pins not applicable for fast path are processed as before, skipping
over the 'fast' ones.

In order to make use of array info obtained from gpiod_get_array() and
speed up processing of arrays matching single GPIO chip layout, that
information must be passed to get/set array functions. Extend the
functions' API with that additional parameter and update all users.

Certain GPIO array lookup results may map directly to GPIO pins of a
single GPIO chip in hardware order. If that condition is recognized
and handled efficiently, significant performance gain of get/set array
functions may be possible.
While processing a request for an array of GPIO descriptors, identify
those which represent corresponding pins of a single GPIO chip. Skip
over pins which require open source or open drain special processing.
Moreover, identify pins which require inversion. Pass a pointer to
that information with the array to the caller so it can benefit from
enhanced performance as soon as get/set array functions can accept and
make efficient use of it.

Most users of get/set array functions iterate consecutive bits of data,
usually a single integer, while processing array of results obtained
from, or building an array of values to be passed to those functions.
Save time wasted on those iterations by changing the functions' API to
accept bitmaps.
All current users are updated as well.
More benefits from the change are expected as soon as planned support
for accepting/passing those bitmaps directly from/to respective GPIO
chip callbacks if applicable is implemented.

reported. That merge issue is in fs/sysfs/group.c and Stephen has

- gnss, finally an in-kernel GPS subsystem to try to tame all of

implementations. This is only for GNSS receivers, but you
have to start somewhere, and this is great to see.

ata_sff_data_xfer_noirq() is invoked via the ->sff_data_xfer hook. The
latter is invoked by ata_pio_sector(), atapi_send_cdb() and
__atapi_pio_bytes() which in turn is invoked by ata_sff_hsm_move().
The latter function requires that the "ap->lock" lock is held which
needs to be taken with disabled interrupts.
There is no need have to have ata_sff_data_xfer_noirq() which invokes
ata_sff_data_xfer32() with disabled interrupts because at this point the
interrupts are already disabled.
Remove the function and its references to it and replace all callers
with ata_sff_data_xfer32().

Core changes:
- We have killed off VLA from the core library and all drivers.
The background should be clear for everyone at this point:
https://lwn.net/Articles/749064/
Also I just don't like VLA's, kernel developers hate it when
compilers do things behind their back. It's as simple as that.
I'm sorry that they even slipped in to begin with.
Kudos to Laura Abbott for exorcising them.
- Support GPIO hogs in machines/board files.
New drivers and chip support:
- R-Car r8a77470 (RZ/G1C)
- R-Car r8a77965 (M3-N)
- R-Car r8a77990 (E3)
- PCA953x driver improvements to accomodate more variants.
Improvements and new features:
- Support one interrupt per line on port A in the DesignWare
dwapb driver.
Misc:
- Random cleanups, right header files in the drivers, some
size optimizations etc.

Board files constitute a significant part of the users of the legacy
GPIO framework. In many cases they only export a line and set its
desired value. We could use GPIO hogs for that like we do for DT and
ACPI but there's no support for that in machine code.
This patch proposes to extend the machine.h API with support for
registering hog tables in board files.

Currently the firmware loader only exposes one silent path for querying
optional firmware, and that is firmware_request_direct(). This function
also disables the sysfs fallback mechanism, which might not always be the
desired behaviour [0].
This patch introduces a variations of request_firmware() that enable the
caller to disable the undesired warning messages but enables the sysfs
fallback mechanism. This is equivalent to adding FW_OPT_NO_WARN to the
old behaviour.

Here are some small driver core and firmware fixes for 4.17-rc3
There's a kobject WARN() removal to make syzkaller a lot happier about
some "normal" error paths that it keeps hitting, which should reduce the
number of false-positives we have been getting recently.
There's also some fimware test and documentation fixes, and the
coredump() function signature change that needed to happen after -rc1
before drivers started to take advantage of it.
All of these have been in linux-next with no reported issues.

Improvements:
- Implemented .get_multiple() callback for most of the

for all the ISA drivers and some other Kconfig cleanups

the rest of the kernel documentation build.
- Continue to make the GPIO drivers include only
<linux/gpio/driver.h> and not the too broad <linux/gpio.h>

Here is the big set of USB and PHY driver patches for 4.17-rc1.
Lots of USB typeC work happened this round, with code moving from the
staging directory into the "real" part of the kernel, as well as new
infrastructure being added to be able to handle the different types of
"roles" that typeC requires.
There is also the normal huge set of USB gadget controller and driver
updates, along with XHCI changes, and a raft of other tiny fixes all
over the USB tree. And the PHY driver updates are merged in here as
well as they interacted with the USB drivers in some places.
All of these have been in linux-next for a while with no reported

"Here is the big set of USB and PHY driver patches for 4.17-rc1.

Some devices have an optimization in place to enable the firmware to
be retaineed during a system reboot, so after reboot the device can skip
requesting and loading the firmware. This can save up to 1s in load
time. The mt7601u 802.11 device happens to be such a device.
When these devices retain the firmware on a reboot and then suspend
they can miss looking for the firmware on resume. To help with this we
need a way to cache the firmware when such an optimization has taken
place.

USB Type-C connectors consist of various muxes and switches
that route the pins on the connector to the right locations.
The USB Type-C drivers need to be able to control the muxes,
as they are the ones that know things like the cable plug
orientation, and the current mode that was negotiated with
the partner.
This introduces a small API for registering and controlling
cable plug orientation switches, and separate small API for
registering and controlling pin multiplexer/demultiplexer
switches that are needed with Accessory/Alternate Modes.

Several frameworks - clk, gpio, phy, pmw, etc. - maintain
lookup tables for describing connections and provide custom
API for handling them. This introduces a single generic
lookup table and API for the connections.
The motivation for this commit is centralizing the
connection lookup, but the goal is to ultimately extract the
connection descriptions also from firmware by using the
fwnode_graph_* functions and other mechanisms that are
available.

potential for regressions is the libsas hotplug changes, but so far

Pull SCSI updates from James Bottomley:
"This is mostly updates of the usual driver suspects: arcmsr,
scsi_debug, mpt3sas, lpfc, cxlflash, qla2xxx, aacraid, megaraid_sas,
hisi_sas.
We also have a rework of the libsas hotplug handling to make it more
robust, a slew of 32 bit time conversions and fixes, and a host of the
usual minor updates and style changes. The biggest potential for
regressions is the libsas hotplug changes, but so far they seem stable
under testing"

Pull power management updates from Rafael Wysocki:
"This includes some infrastructure changes in the PM core, mostly
related to integration between runtime PM and system-wide suspend and
hibernation, plus some driver changes depending on them and fixes for
issues in that area which have become quite apparent recently.
Also included are changes making more x86-based systems use the Low
Power Sleep S0 _DSM interface by default, which turned out to be
necessary to handle power button wakeups from suspend-to-idle on
Surface Pro3.
On the cpufreq front we have fixes and cleanups in the core, some new
hardware support, driver updates and the removal of some unused code
from the CPU cooling thermal driver.
Apart from this, the Operating Performance Points (OPP) framework is
prepared to be used with power domains in the future and there is a
usual bunch of assorted fixes and cleanups.

When host rescinds the device, the UIO driver will clear the interrupt
state and notify application. The read (or write) on the interrupt FD
will then fail with -EIO. This is simpler than adding lots extra uevent
stuff inside UIO.

Make the PM core handle DPM_FLAG_LEAVE_SUSPENDED directly for
devices whose "noirq", "late" and "early" driver callbacks are
invoked directly by it.
Namely, make it skip all of the system-wide resume callbacks for
such devices with DPM_FLAG_LEAVE_SUSPENDED set if they are in
runtime suspend during the "noirq" phase of system-wide suspend
(or analogous) transitions or the system transition under way is
a proper suspend (rather than anything related to hibernation) and
the device's wakeup settings are compatible with runtime PM (that
is, the device cannot generate wakeup signals at all or it is
allowed to wake up the system from sleep).
Signed-off-by: Rafael J. Wysocki <rafael.j.wysocki@intel.com>
Make the PM core avoid invoking the "late" and "noirq" system-wide
suspend (or analogous) callbacks provided by device drivers directly
for devices with DPM_FLAG_SMART_SUSPEND set that are in runtime
suspend during the "late" and "noirq" phases of system-wide suspend
(or analogous) transitions. That is only done for devices without
any middle-layer "late" and "noirq" suspend callbacks (to avoid
confusing the middle layer if there is one).
The underlying observation is that runtime PM is disabled for devices
during the "late" and "noirq" system-wide suspend phases, so if they
remain in runtime suspend from the "late" phase forward, it doesn't
make sense to invoke the "late" and "noirq" callbacks provided by
the drivers for them (arguably, the device is already suspended and
in the right state). Thus, if the remaining driver suspend callbacks
are to be invoked directly by the core, they can be skipped.
This change really makes it possible for, say, platform device
drivers to re-use runtime PM suspend and resume callbacks by
pointing ->suspend_late and ->resume_early, respectively (and
possibly the analogous hibernation-related callback pointers too),
to them without adding any extra "is the device already suspended?"
type of checks to the callback routines, as long as they will be
invoked directly by the core.
