Version 3 of this patch is updated with documentation added to
Documentation/ABI. There are no changes to any of the C code from v2
of the patch.
In order to support kernel DLPAR of CPU resources we need to provide an
interface to add (probe) and remove (release) the resource from the system.
This patch Creates new generic probe and release sysfs files to facilitate
cpu probe/release. The probe/release interface provides for allowing each
arch to supply their own routines for implementing the backend of adding
and removing cpus to/from the system.
This also creates the powerpc specific stubs to handle the arch callouts
from writes to the sysfs files.
The creation and use of these files is regulated by the
CONFIG_ARCH_CPU_PROBE_RELEASE option so that only architectures that need the
capability will have the files created.

This is an updated patch for the Apple iMac 9,1 model to add sound.
Original patch posted here:
http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.alsa.devel/61361/match=
I have been using this patch for a while now
and have to say it works vary well, except for a few minor
things:
With the iMac 24-inch 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
everything seems to be working as it should,
although I have not looked into the microphone
(never really use one, nor have any apps to test,
my guess is it doesn't work, or I never figured out how
to get it to work).
With the iMac 24-inch 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
everything is the same as with the above machine
except I'm hearing a light scratchy/distortion noise
come out of the speakers when using headphones(above machine
does not do this).
Other than that the sound level is great(especially with good Dj headphones).

The legacy probe and force module parameters are obsolete now, the
same can be achieved using the new_device sysfs interface, which is
both more flexible and cheaper (it is implemented by i2c-core rather
than replicated in every driver module.)
The legacy ignore module parameters can be dropped as well. Ignoring
can be done by instantiating a "dummy" device at the problematic
address.
This is the first step of a huge cleanup to i2c-core's i2c_detect
function, i2c.h's I2C_CLIENT_INSMOD* macros, and all drivers that made
use of them.

DVBS2API introduced two new ioctls that allows changing/getting details about newer
video standards like DVB-S2 and ISDB-T. There are lots of thing to do in this chapter,
but, for now, just add a session there, in order to allow make to not complain about
undefined symbol.
With this patch, all ioctls at the frontend.h API were somehow documented.
Signed-off-by: Mauro Carvalho Chehab <mchehab@redhat.com>
We'll need to add the documentation for FE_[GET|SET]_PROPERTY that
is not specific to isdb-t. Instead of doing it at frontend.xml,
it is better to have a separate session for it. Also, isdbt.xml assumes
that those ioctls were already introduced, and documents several exisiting
properties. So, better to just rename it and add the documentation for it,
together with each existing property there.

When we migrate a kvm guest that uses pvclock between two hosts, we may
suffer a large skew. This is because there can be significant differences
between the monotonic clock of the hosts involved. When a new host with
a much larger monotonic time starts running the guest, the view of time
will be significantly impacted.
Situation is much worse when we do the opposite, and migrate to a host with
a smaller monotonic clock.
This proposed ioctl will allow userspace to inform us what is the monotonic
clock value in the source host, so we can keep the time skew short, and
more importantly, never goes backwards. Userspace may also need to trigger
the current data, since from the first migration onwards, it won't be
reflected by a simple call to clock_gettime() anymore.

Support for Xen PV-on-HVM guests can be implemented almost entirely in
userspace, except for handling one annoying MSR that maps a Xen
hypercall blob into guest address space.
A generic mechanism to delegate MSR writes to userspace seems overkill
and risks encouraging similar MSR abuse in the future. Thus this patch
adds special support for the Xen HVM MSR.
I implemented a new ioctl, KVM_XEN_HVM_CONFIG, that lets userspace tell
KVM which MSR the guest will write to, as well as the starting address
and size of the hypercall blobs (one each for 32-bit and 64-bit) that
userspace has loaded from files. When the guest writes to the MSR, KVM
copies one page of the blob from userspace to the guest.
I've tested this patch with a hacked-up version of Gerd's userspace
code, booting a number of guests (CentOS 5.3 i386 and x86_64, and
FreeBSD 8.0-RC1 amd64) and exercising PV network and block devices.

This interface is mainly intended (and implemented) for ACPI _PPC BIOS
frequency limitations, but other cpufreq drivers can also use it for
similar use-cases.
Why is this needed:
Currently it's not obvious why cpufreq got limited.
People see cpufreq/scaling_max_freq reduced, but this could have
happened by:
- any userspace prog writing to scaling_max_freq
- thermal limitations
- hardware (_PPC in ACPI case) limitiations
Therefore export bios_limit (in kHz) to:
- Point the user that it's the BIOS (broken or intended) which limits
frequency
- Export it as a sysfs interface for userspace progs.
While this was a rarely used feature on laptops, there will appear
more and more server implemenations providing "Green IT" features like
allowing the service processor to limit the frequency. People want
to know about HW/BIOS frequency limitations.
All ACPI P-state driven cpufreq drivers are covered with this patch:
- powernow-k8
- powernow-k7
- acpi-cpufreq
Tested with a patched DSDT which limits the first two cores (_PPC returns 1)
via _PPC, exposed by bios_limit:
# echo 2200000 >cpu2/cpufreq/scaling_max_freq
# cat cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_max_freq
2600000
2600000
2200000
2200000
# #scaling_max_freq shows general user/thermal/BIOS limitations
# cat cpu*/cpufreq/bios_limit
2600000
2600000
2800000
2800000
# #bios_limit only shows the HW/BIOS limitation

When a CPU is offlined on POWER currently, we call rtas_stop_self() and hand
the CPU back to the resource pool. This path is used for DLPAR which will
cause a change in the LPAR configuration which will be visible outside.
This patch changes the default state a CPU is put into when it is offlined.
On platforms which support ceding the processor to the hypervisor with
latency hint specifier value, during a cpu offline operation,
instead of calling rtas_stop_self(), we cede the vCPU to the hypervisor
while passing a latency hint specifier value. The Hypervisor can use this hint
to provide better energy savings. Also, during the offline
operation, the control of the vCPU remains with the LPAR as oppposed to
returning it to the resource pool.
The patch achieves this by creating an infrastructure to set the
preferred_offline_state() which can be either
- CPU_STATE_OFFLINE: which is the current behaviour of calling
rtas_stop_self()
- CPU_STATE_INACTIVE: which cedes the vCPU to the hypervisor with the latency
hint specifier.
The codepath which wants to perform a DLPAR operation can set the
preferred_offline_state() of a CPU to CPU_STATE_OFFLINE before invoking
cpu_down().
The patch also provides a boot-time command line argument to disable/enable
CPU_STATE_INACTIVE.

This adds "norecovery" mount option which disables temporal write

Without this option, write access will be even performed for those

This option will be helpful when user wants to prevent any write

Catch an overly long wait for an old, dying active object when we want to
replace it with a new one. The probability is that all the slow-work threads
are hogged, and the delete can't get a look in.
What we do instead is:
(1) if there's nothing in the slow work queue, we sleep until either the dying
object has finished dying or there is something in the slow work queue
behind which we can queue our object.
(2) if there is something in the slow work queue, we return ETIMEDOUT to
fscache_lookup_object(), which then puts us back on the slow work queue,
presumably behind the deletion that we're blocked by. We are then
deferred for a while until we work our way back through the queue -
without blocking a slow-work thread unnecessarily.

Furthermore, make sure that read and allocation operations handle being woken

Handle netfs pages that the vmscan algorithm wants to evict from the pagecache

In the above backtrace, the following is happening:
(1) A page storage operation is being executed by a slow-work thread
(fscache_write_op()).
(2) FS-Cache farms the operation out to the cache to perform
(cachefiles_write_page()).
(3) CacheFiles is then calling Ext3 to perform the actual write, using Ext3's
standard write (do_sync_write()) under KERNEL_DS directly from the netfs
page.
(4) However, for Ext3 to perform the write, it must allocate some memory, in
particular, it must allocate at least one page cache page into which it
can copy the data from the netfs page.
(5) Under OOM conditions, the memory allocator can't immediately come up with
a page, so it uses vmscan to find something to discard
(try_to_free_pages()).
(6) vmscan finds a clean netfs page it might be able to discard (possibly the
one it's trying to write out).
(7) The netfs is called to throw the page away (nfs_release_page()) - but it's
called with __GFP_WAIT, so the netfs decides to wait for the store to
complete (__fscache_wait_on_page_write()).
(8) This blocks a slow-work processing thread - possibly against itself.
The system ends up stuck because it can't write out any netfs pages to the
cache without allocating more memory.
To avoid this, we make FS-Cache cancel some writes that aren't in the middle of
actually being performed. This means that some data won't make it into the
cache this time. To support this, a new FS-Cache function is added
fscache_maybe_release_page() that replaces what the netfs releasepage()
functions used to do with respect to the cache.
The decisions fscache_maybe_release_page() makes are counted and displayed
through /proc/fs/fscache/stats on a line labelled "VmScan". There are four
counters provided: "nos=N" - pages that weren't pending storage; "gon=N" -
pages that were pending storage when we first looked, but weren't by the time
we got the object lock; "bsy=N" - pages that we ignored as they were actively
being written when we looked; and "can=N" - pages that we cancelled the storage
of.
What I'd really like to do is alter the behaviour of the cancellation
heuristics, depending on how necessary it is to expel pages. If there are
plenty of other pages that aren't waiting to be written to the cache that
could be ejected first, then it would be nice to hold up on immediate
cancellation of cache writes - but I don't see a way of doing that.

FS-Cache has two structs internally for keeping track of the internal state of
a cached file: the fscache_cookie struct, which represents the netfs's state,
and fscache_object struct, which represents the cache's state. Each has a
pointer that points to the other (when both are in existence), and each has a
spinlock for pointer maintenance.
Since netfs operations approach these structures from the cookie side, they get
the cookie lock first, then the object lock. Cache operations, on the other
hand, approach from the object side, and get the object lock first. It is not
then permitted for a cache operation to get the cookie lock whilst it is
holding the object lock lest deadlock occur; instead, it must do one of two
things:
(1) increment the cookie usage counter, drop the object lock and then get both
locks in order, or
(2) simply hold the object lock as certain parts of the cookie may not be
altered whilst the object lock is held.
It is also not permitted to follow either pointer without holding the lock at
the end you start with. To break the pointers between the cookie and the
object, both locks must be held.
fscache_write_op(), however, violates the locking rules: It attempts to get the
cookie lock without (a) checking that the cookie pointer is a valid pointer,
and (b) holding the object lock to protect the cookie pointer whilst it follows
it. This is so that it can access the pending page store tree without
interference from __fscache_write_page().
This is fixed by splitting the cookie lock, such that the page store tracking
tree is protected by its own lock, and checking that the cookie pointer is
non-NULL before we attempt to follow it whilst holding the object lock.
The new lock is subordinate to both the cookie lock and the object lock, and so
should be taken after those.

Permit the operations to retrieve data from the cache or to allocate space in
the cache for future writes to be interrupted whilst they're waiting for
permission for the operation to proceed. Typically this wait occurs whilst the
cache object is being looked up on disk in the background.
If an interruption occurs, and the operation has not yet been given the
go-ahead to run, the operation is dequeued and cancelled, and control returns
to the read operation of the netfs routine with none of the requested pages
having been read or in any way marked as known by the cache.
This means that the initial wait is done interruptibly rather than
uninterruptibly.
In addition, extra stats values are made available to show the number of ops
cancelled and the number of cache space allocations interrupted.

By default, all objects and all fields will be shown. This can be restricted

keyctl add user fscache:objlist "<restrictions>" @s
The <restrictions> are:
K Show hexdump of object key (don't show if not given)
A Show hexdump of object aux data (don't show if not given)
And paired restrictions:
C Show objects that have a cookie
c Show objects that don't have a cookie
B Show objects that are busy
b Show objects that aren't busy
W Show objects that have pending writes
w Show objects that don't have pending writes
R Show objects that have outstanding reads
r Show objects that don't have outstanding reads
S Show objects that have slow work queued
s Show objects that don't have slow work queued
If neither side of a restriction pair is given, then both are implied. For
example:
keyctl add user fscache:objlist KB @s
shows objects that are busy, and lists their object keys, but does not dump
their auxiliary data. It also implies "CcWwRrSs", but as 'B' is given, 'b' is
not implied.

Add a function to allow a requeueable work item to sleep till the thread
processing it is needed by the slow-work facility to perform other work.
Sometimes a work item can't progress immediately, but must wait for the
completion of another work item that's currently being processed by another
slow-work thread.
In some circumstances, the waiting item could instead - theoretically - put
itself back on the queue and yield its thread back to the slow-work facility,
thus waiting till it gets processing time again before attempting to progress.
This would allow other work items processing time on that thread.
However, this only works if there is something on the queue for it to queue
behind - otherwise it will just get a thread again immediately, and will end
up cycling between the queue and the thread, eating up valuable CPU time.
So, slow_work_sleep_till_thread_needed() is provided such that an item can put
itself on a wait queue that will wake it up when the event it is actually
interested in occurs, then call this function in lieu of calling schedule().
This function will then sleep until either the item's event occurs or another
work item appears on the queue. If another work item is queued, but the
item's event hasn't occurred, then the work item should requeue itself and
yield the thread back to the slow-work facility by returning.
This can be used by CacheFiles for an object that is being created on one
thread to wait for an object being deleted on another thread where there is
nothing on the queue for the creation to go and wait behind. As soon as an
item appears on the queue that could be given thread time instead, CacheFiles
can stick the creating object back on the queue and return to the slow-work
facility - assuming the object deletion didn't also complete.
Signed-off-by: David Howells <dhowells@redhat.com>
Add a function (slow_work_is_queued()) to permit the owner of a work item to
determine if the item is queued or not.
The work item is counted as being queued if it is actually on the queue, not
just if it is pending. If it is executing and pending, then it is not on the
queue, but will rather be put back on the queue when execution finishes.
This permits a caller to quickly work out if it may be able to put another,
dependent work item on the queue behind it, or whether it will have to wait
till that is finished.
This can be used by CacheFiles to work out whether the creation a new object
can be immediately deferred when it has to wait for an old object to be
deleted, or whether a wait must take place. If a wait is necessary, then the
slow-work thread can otherwise get blocked, preventing the deletion from
taking place.

pcmcia_get_tuple_data(), three new -- and easier to use --
functions are added:
- pcmcia_get_tuple() to get the very first CIS entry of one
type.
- pcmcia_loop_tuple() to loop over all CIS entries of one type.
- pcmcia_get_mac_from_cis() to read out the hardware MAC address
from CISTPL_FUNCE.
Only a handful of drivers need these functions anyway, as most
CIS access is already handled by pcmcia_loop_config(), which
now shares the same backed (pccard_loop_tuple()) with

This reverts commit d0646f7b63, as
requested by Eric Sandeen.
It can basically cause an ext4 filesystem to miss recovery (and thus get
mounted with errors) if the journal checksum does not match.
Quoth Eric:
"My hand-wavy hunch about what is happening is that we're finding a
bad checksum on the last partially-written transaction, which is
not surprising, but if we have a wrapped log and we're doing the
initial scan for head/tail, and we abort scanning on that bad
checksum, then we are essentially running an unrecovered filesystem.
But that's hand-wavy and I need to go look at the code.
We lived without journal checksums on by default until now, and at
this point they're doing more harm than good, so we should revert
the default-changing commit until we can fix it and do some good
power-fail testing with the fixes in place."

without concern for the nice value of its counterpart
process although the guest is scheduled under the nice
value.
This patch fixes the defect and accounts cpu time of
a niced guest in 'nice' time as same as a niced process.
And also the patch adds 'guest_nice' to cpuacct. The
value provides niced guest cpu time which is like 'nice'

moved all device IDs into a single file. While the change itself is

if a userspace tool wanted to get the ID of virtio_net it used to
include virtio_net.h. This does no longer work, since virtio_net.h
does not include virtio_ids.h.
This patch moves all "#include <linux/virtio_ids.h>" from the C

When collecting slub stats for particular workloads, it's necessary to
collect each statistic for all caches before the job is even started
because the counters are usually greater than zero just from boot and
initialization.
This allows a statistic to be cleared on each cpu by writing '0' to its
sysfs file. This creates a baseline for statistics of interest before
the workload is started.
Setting a statistic to a particular value is not supported, so all values
written to these files other than '0' returns -EINVAL.

On FSC laptops, the sound gets muted gradually when the volume is chnaged.
This is due to the wrong volume-knob widget setup. The delta bit (bit 7)
shouldn't be set for these devices.
This patch adds a new quirk to set the value 0x7f to the widget 0x24
instead of 0xff.

Add a command line parameter to allow limiting the function graphs
that are traced on boot up from the given top-level callers , when
ftrace=function_graph is specified.
This patch adds the following command line option:
ftrace_graph_filter=function-list
Where function-list is a comma separated list of functions to filter.

Add $ prefix to the special variables(e.g. sa, rv) of kprobe-tracer.
This resolves consistency issues between kprobe_events and perf-kprobe.
The main goal is to avoid conflicts between local variable names of
probed functions, used by perf probe, and special variables used
in the kprobe event creation interface (stack values, etc...) and
also available from perf probe.
ie: we don't want rv (return value) to conflict with a local variable
named rv in a probed function.

Update documentation of cgroups tasks and procs files
Document the cgroup.procs file.
Clarify the semantics of the cgroup.procs and tasks files. Although the
current cgroup.procs interface returns a sorted and uniqified list of
pids, potential future performance enhancements could result in those
properties being removed - explicitly document this aspect of the API.
There are no existing users of cgroup.procs, so compatibility isn't an
issue. There are users of the "tasks" file, but none that would appear to
break in the event of the sorted property being broken. The standard
"libcpuset" explicitly sorts the results of reading from the tasks file,
and "libcg" and other users don't appear to care about ordering.

Adjust the max_kernel_pages default to a quarter of totalram_pages,
instead of nr_free_buffer_pages() / 4: the KSM pages themselves come from
highmem, and even on a 16GB PAE machine, 4GB of KSM pages would only be
pinning 32MB of lowmem with their rmap_items, so no need for the more
obscure calculation (nor for its own special init function).
There is no way for the user to switch KSM on if CONFIG_SYSFS is not
enabled, so in that case default run to KSM_RUN_MERGE.
Update KSM Documentation and Kconfig to reflect the new defaults.

UDP_HTABLE_SIZE was initialy defined to 128, which is a bit small for
several setups.
4000 active UDP sockets -> 32 sockets per chain in average. An
incoming frame has to lookup all sockets to find best match, so long
chains hurt latency.
Instead of a fixed size hash table that cant be perfect for every
needs, let UDP stack choose its table size at boot time like tcp/ip
route, using alloc_large_system_hash() helper
Add an optional boot parameter, uhash_entries=x so that an admin can
force a size between 256 and 65536 if needed, like thash_entries and
rhash_entries.
dmesg logs two new lines :
[ 0.647039] UDP hash table entries: 512 (order: 0, 4096 bytes)
[ 0.647099] UDP Lite hash table entries: 512 (order: 0, 4096 bytes)
Maximal size on 64bit arches would be 65536 slots, ie 1 MBytes for non
debugging spinlocks.

Subject: [PATCH] ipv6: new sysctl for sending TLLAO with unicast NAs
Neighbor advertisements responding to unicast neighbor solicitations
did not include the target link-layer address option. This patch adds
a new sysctl option (disabled by default) which controls whether this
option should be sent even with unicast NAs.
The need for this arose because certain routers expect the TLLAO in
some situations even as a response to unicast NS packets.
Moreover, RFC 2461 recommends sending this to avoid a race condition
(section 4.4, Target link-layer address)

In some cases there is not desirable to switch back to primary interface when
it's link recovers and rather stay with currently active one. We need to avoid
packetloss as much as we can in some cases. This is solved by introducing
primary_reselect option. Note that enslaved primary slave is set as current
active no matter what.

after change of option setting via sysfs, revised the documentation
update, and bumped the bonding version number.

It is not currently possible to instruct pktgen to use one selected tx queue.
When Robert added multiqueue support in commit 45b270f8, he added
an interval (queue_map_min, queue_map_max), and his code doesnt take
into account the case of min = max, to select one tx queue exactly.
I suspect a high performance setup on a eight txqueue device wants
to use exactly eight cpus, and assign one tx queue to each sender.
This patchs makes pktgen select the right tx queue, not the first one.
Also updates Documentation to reflect Robert changes.

There is no point in implementing a detect callback for the LTC4215
and LTC4245, as these devices can't be detected. It was there solely
to handle "force" module parameters to instantiate devices, but now
we have a better sysfs interface that can do the same.
So we can get rid of the ugly module parameters and the detect
callbacks. This shrinks the binary module sizes by 36% and 46%,
respectively.
