For static DT usecases, we don't need the disabled nodes and can skip
unflattening. This saves a significant amount of RAM in memory constrained
cases. In one example on STM32F469, the RAM usage goes from 118K to 26K.
There are a few cases in the kernel that modify the status property
dynamically. These all are changes from enabled to disabled, depend on
OF_DYNAMIC or are not FDT based (PDT based).

Having device_nodes be kobjects is only needed if sysfs or OF_DYNAMIC is
enabled. Otherwise, having a kobject in struct device_node is
unnecessary bloat in minimal kernel configurations.
Likewise, bin_attribute is only needed in struct property when sysfs is
enabled, so we can make it configurable too.

Using CONFIG_OF_DYNAMIC=y uncovered an imbalance in the usecount of the
node being passed to of_fwnode_graph_get_port_parent(). Preserve the
usecount by using of_get_parent() instead of of_get_next_parent() which
don't decrement the usecount of the node passed to it.

There are two types of memory reservations firmware can ask the kernel
to make in the device tree: static and dynamic.
See Documentation/devicetree/bindings/reserved-memory/reserved-memory.txt
If you have greater than 16 entries in /reserved-memory (as we do on
POWER9 systems) you would get this scary looking error message:
[ 0.000000] OF: reserved mem: not enough space all defined regions.
This is harmless if all your reservations are static (which with OPAL on
POWER9, they are).
It is not harmless if you have any dynamic reservations after the 16th.
In the first pass over the fdt to find reservations, the child nodes of
/reserved-memory are added to a static array in of_reserved_mem.c so that
memory can be reserved in a 2nd pass. The array has 16 entries. This is why,
on my dual socket POWER9 system, I get that error 4 times with 20 static
reservations.
We don't have a problem on ppc though, as in arch/powerpc/kernel/prom.c
we look at the new style /reserved-ranges property to do reservations,
and this logic was introduced in 0962e8004e (well before any powernv
system shipped).
A Google search shows up no occurances of that exact error message, so we're
probably safe in that no machine that people use has memory not being reserved
when it should be.
The simple fix is to bump the length of the array to 32 which "should be
enough for everyone(TM)". The simple fix of not recording static allocations
in the array would cause problems for devices with "memory-region" properties.
A more future-proof fix is likely possible, although more invasive and this
simple fix is perfectly suitable in the meantime while a more future-proof
fix is developed.

Do not strdup() console options. It seems that the only reason for
it to be strdup()-ed was a compilation warning: printk, UART and
console drivers, for some reason, expect char pointer instead of
const char pointer. So we can just pass `of_stdout_options', but
need to cast it to char pointer. A better fix would be to change
printk, console drivers and UART to accept const char `options';
but that will take time - there are lots of drivers to update.
The patch also fixes a possible memory leak: add_preferred_console()
can fail, but we don't kfree() options.

With dependencies on a statically allocated full path name converted to
use %pOF format specifier, we can store just the basename of node, and
the unflattening of the FDT can be simplified.
This commit will affect the remaining users of full_name. After
analyzing these users, the remaining cases should only change some print
messages. The main users of full_name are providing a name for struct
resource. The resource names shouldn't be important other than providing
/proc/iomem names.
We no longer distinguish between pre and post 0x10 dtb formats as either
a full path or basename will work. However, less than 0x10 formats have
been broken since the conversion to use libfdt (and no one has cared).
The conversion of the unflattening code to be non-recursive also broke
pre 0x10 formats as the populate_node function would return 0 in that
case.

Moving DMA configuration to happen later at driver probe time had the
unnoticed side-effect that we now perform DMA configuration for *every*
device represented in DT, rather than only those explicitly created by
the of_platform and PCI code.
As Christoph points out, this is not really the best thing to do. Whilst
there may well be other DMA-capable buses that can benefit from having
their children automatically configured after the bridge has probed,
there are also plenty of others like USB, MDIO, etc. that definitely do
not support DMA and should not be indiscriminately processed.
The good news is that in most cases the DT "dma-ranges" property serves
as an appropriate indicator - per a strict interpretation of the spec,
anything lacking a "dma-ranges" property should be considered not to
have a mapping of DMA address space from its children to its parent,
thus anything for which of_dma_get_range() does not succeed does not
need DMA configuration. Certain bus types have a general expectation of
DMA capability and carry a well-established precedent that an absent
"dma-ranges" implies the same as the empty property, so we automatically
opt those in to DMA configuration regardless, to avoid regressing most
existing platforms.

of_device_request_module() calls of_device_get_modalias() with "len" 0,
to calculate the size of the buffer needed to store the result, but due
to integer promotion the ssize_t "len" will be compared as unsigned with
strlen(compat) and the loop will generally never break. This results in

Further more of_device_get_modalias() is supposed to return the number
of bytes needed to store the entire modalias, so the loop needs to
continue accumulate the total size even though the buffer is full.
Finally the function is not expected to ensure space for the NUL, nor
include it in the returned size, so only 1 should be added to the length

As of_device_get_modalias() returns the number of bytes that would have
been written to the target string, regardless of how much did fit in the
buffer, it's possible that the returned index points beyond the buffer
passed to of_device_modalias() - causing memory beyond the buffer to be
null terminated.

Historically, DMA masks have suffered some ambiguity between whether
they represent the range of physical memory a device can access, or the
address bits a device is capable of driving, particularly since on many
platforms the two are equivalent. Whilst there are some stragglers left
(dma_max_pfn(), I'm looking at you...), the majority of DMA code has
been cleaned up to follow the latter definition, not least since it is
the only one which makes sense once IOMMUs are involved.
In this respect, of_dma_configure() has always done the wrong thing in
how it generates initial masks based on "dma-ranges". Although rounding
down did not affect the TI Keystone platform where dma_addr + size is
already a power of two, in any other case it results in a mask which is
at best unnecessarily constrained and at worst unusable.
BCM2837 illustrates the problem nicely, where we have a DMA base of 3GB
and a size of 1GB - 16MB, giving dma_addr + size = 0xff000000 and a
resultant mask of 0x7fffffff, which is then insufficient to even cover
the necessary offset, effectively making all DMA addresses out-of-range.
This has been hidden until now (mostly because we don't yet prevent
drivers from simply overwriting this initial mask later upon probe), but
due to recent changes elsewhere now shows up as USB being broken on
Raspberry Pi 3.
Make it right by rounding up instead of down, such that the mask
correctly correctly describes all possisble bits the device needs to
emit.

Looks like gcc isn't always able to figure out that 3 *if* branches in
of_phy_register_fixed_link() calling fixed_phy_register() at their ends
are similar enough and thus can be merged. The "manual" merge saves 40
bytes of the object code (AArch64 gcc 4.8.5), and still saves 12 bytes
even if gcc was able to merge the branch tails (ARM gcc 4.8.5)...

The "fixed-link" prop support predated of_property_read_u32_array(), so
basically had to open-code it. Using the modern API saves 24 bytes of the
object code (ARM gcc 4.8.5); the only behavior change would be that the
prop length check is now less strict (however the strict pre-check done
in of_phy_is_fixed_link() is left intact anyway)...

Fix inconsistent use of of_graph_get_port_parent() where
asoc_simple_card_parse_graph_dai() does of_node_get() before
calling it while other callers do not. We can fix this by
not trashing the node passed to of_graph_get_port_parent().
Let's also make sure the callers have correct refcounts and remove
related incorrect of_node_put() calls for of_for_each_phandle
as that's done by of_phandle_iterator_next() except when
we break out of the loop early.
Let's fix both issues with a single patch to avoid kobject
refcounts getting messed up more if two patches are merged
separately.
Otherwise strange issues can happen caused by memory corruption
caused by too many kobject_del() calls such as:

of_phy_register_fixed_link() declares the 'err' variable to hold the result
of of_property_read_string() but only uses it once after that, while that
function can be called directly from the *if* statement...
Remove that variable and move/regroup 'link_gpio' and 'len' variables in
order to sort the declarations in the reverse Xmas tree order -- to please

The new fwnode_property_get_reference_args() interface amends the fwnode
property API with the functionality of both of_parse_phandle_with_args()
and __acpi_node_get_property_reference().
The semantics is slightly different: the cells property is ignored on ACPI
as the number of arguments can be explicitly obtained from the firmware
interface.

Instead of relying on the struct fwnode_handle type field, define
fwnode_operations structs for all separate types of fwnodes. To find out
the type, compare to the ops field to relevant ops structs.
This change has two benefits:
1. it avoids adding the type field to each and every instance of struct
fwnode_handle, thus saving memory and
2. makes the ops field the single factor that defines both the types of
the fwnode as well as defines the implementation of its operations,
decreasing the possibility of bugs when developing code dealing with
fwnode internals.

The "interrupt-controller" property is boolean, i.e. has no value. The DT
interrupt parsing code predates of_property_read_bool(), so it uses either
of_get_property() or of_find_property() -- the former isn't quite correct
for the boolean props (but works somehow). Use the modern boolean prop API
instead.

90% of the usage of device node's full_name is printing it out in a
kernel message. However, storing the full path for every node is
wasteful and redundant. With a custom format specifier, we can generate
the full path at run-time and eventually remove the full path from every
node.
For instance typical use is:
pr_info("Frobbing node %s\n", node->full_name);
Which can be written now as:
pr_info("Frobbing node %pOF\n", node);
'%pO' is the base specifier to represent kobjects with '%pOF'
representing struct device_node. Currently, struct device_node is the
only supported type of kobject.
More fine-grained control of formatting includes printing the name,
flags, path-spec name and others, explained in the documentation entry.
Originally written by Pantelis, but pretty much rewrote the core
function using existing string/number functions. The 2 passes were
unnecessary and have been removed. Also, updated the checkpatch.pl
check. The unittest code was written by Grant Likely.

find_node_by_full_name() does the same thing as of_find_node_by_path(),
but takes no locks and doesn't work on aliases. Refactor
of_find_node_opts_by_path() into __of_find_node_by_full_path() and
replace find_node_by_full_name() with it.

Several places in DT code open code the equivalent of kbasename.
Replace them.
The behavior for root nodes in node_name_cmp will be slightly different.
Instead of comparing "/", "" will be compared. The comparison will be
the same.

The device and fwnode property API supports Devicetree, ACPI and pset
properties. The implementation of this functionality for each firmware
type was embedded in the fwnode property core. Move it out to firmware
type specific locations, making it easier to maintain.

base.c contains both core OF functions and increasingly other
functionality such as accessing properties and graphs, including
convenience functions. In the near future this would also include OF
specific implementation of the fwnode property and graph APIs.
Create driver/of/property.c to contain procedures for accessing and
interpreting device tree properties. The procedures are moved from
drivers/of/base.c, with no changes other than copying only the includes
required by the moved procedures.

While deferring the probe of IOMMU masters, xlate and
add_device callbacks called from of_iommu_configure
can pass back error values like -ENODEV, which means
the IOMMU cannot be connected with that master for real
reasons. Before the IOMMU probe deferral, all such errors
were ignored. Now all those errors are propagated back,
killing the master's probe for such errors. Instead ignore
all the errors except EPROBE_DEFER, which is the only one
of concern and let the master work without IOMMU, thus
restoring the old behavior. Also make explicit that
of_dma_configure handles only -EPROBE_DEFER from
of_iommu_configure.

of_irq_to_resource() currently uses irq_of_parse_and_map() to
translate a DT interrupt specification into a Linux virtual interrupt
number. While this works in most cases, irq_of_parse_and_map() doesn't
properly handle the case where the interrupt controller is not yet
available (due to deferred probing for example).
So instead, use of_irq_get(), which is implemented exactly like
irq_of_parse_and_map(), with the exception that if the interrupt
controller is not yet available, it returns -EPROBE_DEFER. Obviously,
we also handle this error and bail out from of_irq_to_resource() when
of_irq_get() returns an error.
This allows to avoid silly error messages at boot time caused by
irq_create_of_mapping() when the interrupt controller is not
available:

A change to function pointers that was meant to address a sparse warning
turned out to cause hundreds of new gcc-7 warnings:

Some boards [1] leave the PHYs at an invalid state
during system power-up or reset thus causing unreliability
issues with the PHY which manifests as PHY not being detected
or link not functional. To fix this, these PHYs need to be RESET
via a GPIO connected to the PHY's RESET pin.
Some boards have a single GPIO controlling the PHY RESET pin of all
PHYs on the bus whereas some others have separate GPIOs controlling
individual PHY RESETs.
In both cases, the RESET de-assertion cannot be done in the PHY driver
as the PHY will not probe till its reset is de-asserted.
So do the RESET de-assertion in the MDIO bus driver.

Failures to look up an IOMMU when parsing the DT iommus property need to
be handled separately from the .of_xlate() failures to support deferred
probing.
The lack of a registered IOMMU can be caused by the lack of a driver for
the IOMMU, the IOMMU device probe not having been performed yet, having
been deferred, or having failed.
The first case occurs when the device tree describes the bus master and
IOMMU topology correctly but no device driver exists for the IOMMU yet
or the device driver has not been compiled in. Return NULL, the caller
will configure the device without an IOMMU.
The second and third cases are handled by deferring the probe of the bus
master device which will eventually get reprobed after the IOMMU.
The last case is currently handled by deferring the probe of the bus
master device as well. A mechanism to either configure the bus master
device without an IOMMU or to fail the bus master device probe depending
on whether the IOMMU is optional or mandatory would be a good
enhancement.

Configuring DMA ops at probe time will allow deferring device probe when
the IOMMU isn't available yet. The dma_configure for the device is
now called from the generic device_attach callback just before the
bus/driver probe is called. This way, configuring the DMA ops for the
device would be called at the same place for all bus_types, hence the
deferred probing mechanism should work for all buses as well.

Size of the dma-range is calculated as coherent_dma_mask + 1
and passed to arch_setup_dma_ops further. It overflows when
the coherent_dma_mask is set for full 64 bits 0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF,
resulting in size getting passed as 0 wrongly. Fix this by
passsing in max(mask, mask + 1). Note that in this case
when the mask is set to full 64bits, we will be passing the mask
itself to arch_setup_dma_ops instead of the size. The real fix
for this should be to make arch_setup_dma_ops receive the
mask and handle it, to be done in the future.

The call to of_find_node_by_path("/cpus") returns the cpus device_node
with its reference count incremented. There is no matching of_node_put()
call in of_numa_parse_cpu_nodes() which results in a leaked reference
to the "/cpus" node.
This patch adds an of_node_put() to release the reference.

The modalias sysfs attr is lacking a newline for DT aliases on platform
devices. The macio and ibmebus correctly add the newline, but open code it.
Introduce a new function, of_device_modalias(), that fills the buffer with
the modalias including the newline and update users of the old
of_device_get_modalias function.

If the length of the modalias is greater than the buffer size, then the
modalias is truncated. However the untruncated length is returned which
will cause an error. Fix this to return the truncated length. If an error
in the case was desired, then then we should just return -ENOMEM.
The reality is no device will ever have 4KB of compatible strings to hit
this case.

All users of the small MSI controller API have been migrated to use the
generic MSI infrastructure instead. We no longer need a global chained list
of msi_controller. Instead, MSI controllers are now represented as IRQ
domains attached to OF nodes, and the resolution between a device
requesting an MSI and the corresponding MSI controller is done by the
generic interrupt resolution logic.
Therefore, this API is now completely useless, and can be removed from the
kernel.

Lots of calls to of_platform_populate() are not unbalanced by a call
to of_platform_depopulate(). This create issues while drivers are
bind/unbind.
In way to solve those issues is to add devm_of_platform_populate()
which will call of_platform_depopulate() when the device is unbound
from the bus.

Some Cavium dev boards have firmware which doesn't supply a proper
ethernet-phy-ieee802.3-c22" compatible property. Restore these boards

The OF graph API leaves too much of the graph walking to clients when
in many cases the driver doesn't care about accessing the port or
endpoint nodes. The drivers typically just want the device connected via
a particular graph connection. of_graph_get_remote_node provides this
functionality.

During stepping down the tree, parent node is gotten first and its refcount is
increased with of_node_get() in __of_get_next_child(). Since it just being used
as tmp node, its refcount must be decreased with of_node_put() after traversing
its child nodes.
Or, its refcount will never be descreased to ZERO, then it will never be freed,
as well as other related memory blocks.
To fix this, decrease refcount of parent with of_node_put() after
__of_find_node_by_path().

In the case of ULPI devices, we want to be able to load the
driver before registering the device so that we don't get stuck
in a loop waiting for the phy module to appear and failing usb
controller probe. Currently we request the ulpi module via the
ulpi ids, but in the DT case we might need to request it with the
OF based modalias instead. Add a common function that allows
anyone to request a module with the OF based modalias.

It is useful to have helper function just to get the number of cache
levels for a given logical cpu. We can obtain the same by just checking
the level at which the last cache is present. This patch adds support
to find the level of the last cache for a given cpu.
It will be used on ARM64 platform where the device tree provides the
information for the additional non-architected/transparent/external
last level caches that are not integrated with the processors.

On PowerPC machines some PCI slots might not have level triggered
interrupts capability (also know as level signaled interrupts),
leading of_irq_parse_pci() to complain by presenting error messages
on the kernel log - in this case, the properties "interrupt-map" and
"interrupt-map-mask" are not present on device's node in the device
tree.
This patch introduces a different message for this specific case,
and also reduces its level from error to warning. Besides, we warn
(once) that possibly some PCI slots on the system have no level
triggered interrupts available.
We changed some error return codes too on function of_irq_parse_raw()
in order other failure's cases can be presented in a more precise way.
Before this patch, when an adapter was plugged in a slot without level
interrupts capabilitiy on PowerPC, we saw a generic error message
like this:

Now, with this applied, we see the following specific message:

taking the fail path instead of returning directly from the loop.

For some IPs, there may be virtual child devices created and for them its
necessary to set the dma_ops if it's using reserved memory else it will call
the dummy dma_ops during buffer operations for the child devices which will
lead to memory mapping failure.

When allocating a struct alias_prop, of_alias_scan() only requested that
it be aligned on a 4 byte boundary. The struct contains pointers which
leads to us attempting 64 bit writes on 64 bit systems, and if the CPU
doesn't support unaligned memory accesses then this causes problems -
for example on some MIPS64r2 CPUs including the "mips64r2-generic" QEMU
emulated CPU it will trigger an address error exception.
Fix this by requesting alignment for the struct alias_prop allocation
matching that which the compiler expects, using the __alignof__ keyword.

An empty __dtb_start to __dtb_end section might result in

Here's the big char/misc driver patches for 4.10-rc1. Lots of tiny
changes over lots of "minor" driver subsystems, the largest being some
new FPGA drivers. Other than that, a few other new drivers, but no new
driver subsystems added for this kernel cycle, a nice change.
All of these have been in linux-next with no reported issues.

When movable nodes are enabled, any node containing only hotpluggable
memory is made movable at boot time.
On x86, hotpluggable memory is discovered by parsing the ACPI SRAT,
making corresponding calls to memblock_mark_hotplug().
If we introduce a dt property to describe memory as hotpluggable,
configs supporting early fdt may then also do this marking and use
movable nodes.

Add helper to deregister fixed-link PHYs registered using
of_phy_register_fixed_link().
Convert the two drivers that care to deregister their fixed-link PHYs to
use the new helper, but note that most drivers currently fail to do so.

Currently platforms/drivers needing to get the machine model name are
replicating the same snippet of code. In some case, the OF reference
counting is either missing or incorrect.
This patch adds support to read the machine model name either using
the "model" or the "compatible" property in the device tree root node
to the core OF/DT code.
This can be used to remove all the duplicate code snippets doing exactly
same thing later.
