and modify acpi_platform_notify() to call .setup() after executing
acpi_bind_one() successfully and acpi_platform_notify_remove() to

the users of struct acpi_bus_type, PCI in particular, to specify
operations to be executed right after the given device has been
associated with a companion struct acpi_device and right before
it's going to be detached from that companion, respectively.
The main motivation is to be able to get rid of acpi_pci_bind()
and acpi_pci_unbind(), which are horrible horrible stuff. [In short,
there are three problems with them: The way they populate the .bind()

straightforward, they require special hotplug-specific paths to be
present in the ACPI namespace scanning code and by the time
acpi_pci_unbind() is called the PCI device object in question may

The callers of acpi_bus_add() usually assume that if it has
succeeded, then a struct acpi_device object has been attached to
the handle passed as the first argument. Unfortunately, however,
this assumption is wrong, because acpi_bus_scan(), and acpi_bus_add()
too as a result, may return a pointer to a different struct
acpi_device object on success (it may be an object corresponding to
one of the descendant ACPI nodes in the namespace scope below that
handle).
For this reason, the callers of acpi_bus_add() who care about
whether or not a struct acpi_device object has been created for
its first argument need to check that using acpi_bus_get_device()
anyway, so the second argument of acpi_bus_add() is not really
useful for them. The same observation applies to acpi_bus_scan()
executed directly from acpi_scan_init().
Therefore modify the relevant callers of acpi_bus_add() to check the
existence of the struct acpi_device in question with the help of
acpi_bus_get_device() and drop the no longer necessary second
argument of acpi_bus_add(). Accordingly, modify acpi_scan_init() to
use acpi_bus_get_device() to get acpi_root and drop the no longer

Instead of running acpi_pci_root_init() from a separate subsys
initcall, call it directly from acpi_scan_init() before scanning the
ACPI namespace for the first time, so that the PCI root bridge
driver's .add() routine, acpi_pci_root_start(), is always run
before binding ACPI drivers or attaching "companion" device objects
to struct acpi_device objects below the root bridge's device node in
the ACPI namespace.
The first, simpler reason for doing this is that it makes the
situation during boot more similar to the situation during hotplug,
in which the ACPI PCI root bridge driver is always present.
The second reason is that acpi_pci_root_init() causes struct pci_dev
objects to be created for all PCI devices below the bridge and
these objects may be necessary for whatever is done with the other
ACPI device nodes in that namespace scope. For example, devices
created by acpi_create_platform_device() sometimes may need to be
added to the device hierarchy as children of PCI bridges. For this
purpose, however, the struct pci_dev objects representing those
bridges need to exist before the platform devices in question are
registered.

Split the ACPI namespace scanning for devices into two passes, such
that struct acpi_device objects are registerd in the first pass
without probing ACPI drivers and the drivers are probed against them
directly in the second pass.
There are two main reasons for doing that.
First, the ACPI PCI root bridge driver's .add() routine,
acpi_pci_root_add(), causes struct pci_dev objects to be created for
all PCI devices under the given root bridge. Usually, there are
corresponding ACPI device nodes in the ACPI namespace for some of
those devices and therefore there should be "companion" struct
acpi_device objects to attach those struct pci_dev objects to. These
struct acpi_device objects should exist when the corresponding
struct pci_dev objects are created, but that is only guaranteed
during boot and not during hotplug. This leads to a number of
functional differences between the boot and the hotplug cases which
are not strictly necessary and make the code more complicated.
For example, this forces the ACPI PCI root bridge driver to defer the
registration of the just created struct pci_dev objects and to use a
special .start() callback routine, acpi_pci_root_start(), to make
sure that all of the "companion" struct acpi_device objects will be
present at PCI devices registration time during hotplug.
If those differences can be eliminated, we will be able to
consolidate the boot and hotplug code paths for the enumeration and
registration of PCI devices and to reduce the complexity of that
code quite a bit.
The second reason is that, in general, it should be possible to
resolve conflicts of resources assigned by the BIOS to different
devices represented by ACPI namespace nodes before any drivers bind
to them and before they are attached to "companion" objects
representing physical devices (such as struct pci_dev). However, for
this purpose we first need to enumerate all ACPI device nodes in the
given namespace scope.

debugging capability to feed ACPI tables via the initramfs.
On a grander scope, it formalizes using the initramfs protocol for
feeding arbitrary blobs which need to be accessed early to the kernel:
they are fed first in the initramfs blob (lots of bootloaders can
concatenate this at boot time, others can use a single file) in an
uncompressed cpio archive using filenames starting with "kernel/".
The ACPI maintainers requested that this patchset be fed via the x86

Here's the large driver core updates for 3.8-rc1.
The biggest thing here is the various __dev* marking removals. This is
going to be a pain for the merge with different subsystem trees, I know,
but all of the patches included here have been ACKed by their various
subsystem maintainers, as they wanted them to go through here.
If this is too much of a pain, I can pull all of them out of this tree
and just send you one with the other fixes/updates and then, after
3.8-rc1 is out, do the rest of the removals to ensure we catch them all,
it's up to you. The merges should all be trivial, and Stephen has been
doing them all in linux-next for a few weeks now quite easily.
Other than the __dev* marking removals, there's nothing major here, some
firmware loading updates and other minor things in the driver core.
All of these have (much to Stephen's annoyance), been in linux-next for
a while.

Pull driver core updates from Greg Kroah-Hartman:
"Here's the large driver core updates for 3.8-rc1.
The biggest thing here is the various __dev* marking removals. This
is going to be a pain for the merge with different subsystem trees, I
know, but all of the patches included here have been ACKed by their
various subsystem maintainers, as they wanted them to go through here.
If this is too much of a pain, I can pull all of them out of this tree
and just send you one with the other fixes/updates and then, after
3.8-rc1 is out, do the rest of the removals to ensure we catch them
all, it's up to you. The merges should all be trivial, and Stephen
has been doing them all in linux-next for a few weeks now quite
easily.
Other than the __dev* marking removals, there's nothing major here,
some firmware loading updates and other minor things in the driver
core.
All of these have (much to Stephen's annoyance), been in linux-next
for a while.

And there is no way for OS to detect this dependency.
commit 9bcb811896 shows us a problem
that _TMP must be evaluate after _CRT/_HOT/_PSV/_ACx, or else
firmware will shutdown the system.
But the machine in https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=43284
shows us that _PSV would return valid value only if _TMP has been
evaluated once.
With this patch, all of the control methods will be evaluated once,
in the _CRT/_HOT/_PSV/_CRT/_TMP order, before they are actually used.

Many cpuidle drivers measure their time spent in an idle state by
reading the wallclock time before and after idling and calculating the
difference. This leads to erroneous results when the wallclock time gets
updated by another processor in the meantime, adding that clock
adjustment to the idle state's time counter.
If the clock adjustment was negative, the result is even worse due to an
erroneous cast from int to unsigned long long of the last_residency
variable. The negative 32 bit integer will zero-extend and result in a
forward time jump of roughly four billion milliseconds or 1.3 hours on
the idle state residency counter.
This patch changes all affected cpuidle drivers to either use the
monotonic clock for their measurements or make use of the generic time
measurement wrapper in cpuidle.c, which was already working correctly.
Some superfluous CLIs/STIs in the ACPI code are removed (interrupts
should always already be disabled before entering the idle function, and
not get reenabled until the generic wrapper has performed its second
measurement). It also removes the erroneous cast, making sure that
negative residency values are applied correctly even though they should
not appear anymore.

[Issue]
Currently, a variable name, which identifies each entry, consists of type, id and ctime.
But if multiple events happens in a short time, a second/third event may fail to log because
efi_pstore can't distinguish each event with current variable name.
[Solution]
A reasonable way to identify all events precisely is introducing a sequence counter to
the variable name.
The sequence counter has already supported in a pstore layer with "oopscount".
So, this patch adds it to a variable name.
Also, it is passed to read/erase callbacks of platform drivers in accordance with
the modification of the variable name.
<before applying this patch>
a variable name of first event: dump-type0-1-12345678
a variable name of second event: dump-type0-1-12345678
type:0
id:1
ctime:12345678
If multiple events happen in a short time, efi_pstore can't distinguish them because
variable names are same among them.
<after applying this patch>
it can be distinguishable by adding a sequence counter as follows.
a variable name of first event: dump-type0-1-1-12345678
a variable name of Second event: dump-type0-1-2-12345678
type:0
id:1
sequence counter: 1(first event), 2(second event)
ctime:12345678
In case of a write callback executed in pstore_console_write(), "0" is added to
an argument of the write callback because it just logs all kernel messages and
doesn't need to care about multiple events.

[Issue]
Currently, a variable name, which is used to identify each log entry, consists of type,
id and ctime. But an erase callback does not use ctime.
If efi_pstore supported just one log, type and id were enough.
However, in case of supporting multiple logs, it doesn't work because
it can't distinguish each entry without ctime at erasing time.
<Example>
As you can see below, efi_pstore can't differentiate first event from second one without ctime.
a variable name of first event: dump-type0-1-12345678
a variable name of second event: dump-type0-1-23456789
type:0
id:1
ctime:12345678, 23456789
[Solution]
This patch adds ctime to an argument of an erase callback.
It works across reboots because ctime of pstore means the date that the record was originally stored.
To do this, efi_pstore saves the ctime to variable name at writing time and passes it to pstore
at reading time.

Currently we have valid flag to represent if this ACPI device power
state is valid. A device power state is valid does not necessarily
mean we, as OSPM, has a mean to put the device into that power state,
e.g. D3 cold is always a valid power state for any ACPI device, but if
there is no _PS3 or _PRx for this device, we can't really put that
device into D3 cold power state. The same is true for D0 power state.
So here comes the os_accessible flag, which is only set if the device
has provided us the required means to put it into that power state,
e.g. if we have _PS3 or _PRx, we can put the device into D3 cold state
and thus, D3 cold power state's os_accessible flag will be set in this
case.
And a new wrapper inline function is added to be used to check if
firmware has provided us a way to power off the device during runtime.

This patch introduces acpi_handle_<level>(), where <level> is
a kernel message level such as err/warn/info, to support improved
logging messages for ACPI, esp. hot-plug operations.
acpi_handle_<level>() appends "ACPI" prefix and ACPI object path
to the messages. This improves diagnosis of hotplug operations
since an error message in a log file identifies an object that
caused an issue. This interface acquires the global namespace
mutex to obtain an object path. In interrupt context, it shows
the object path as <n/a>.
acpi_handle_<level>() takes acpi_handle as an argument, which is
passed to ACPI hotplug notify handlers from the ACPICA. Therefore,
it is always available unlike other kernel objects, such as device.
For example:
acpi_handle_err(handle, "Device don't exist, dropping EJECT\n");
logs an error message like this at KERN_ERR.
ACPI: \_SB_.SCK4.CPU4: Device don't exist, dropping EJECT
ACPI hot-plug drivers can use acpi_handle_<level>() when they need
to identify a target ACPI object path in their messages, such as
error cases. The usage model is similar to dev_<level>().
acpi_handle_<level>() can be used when a device is not created or
is invalid during hot-plug operations. ACPI object path is also
consistent on the platform, unlike device name that gets incremented
over hotplug operations.
ACPI drivers should use dev_<level>() when a device object is valid.
Device name provides more user friendly information, and avoids
acquiring the global ACPI namespace mutex. ACPI drivers also
continue to use pr_<level>() when they do not need to specify device
information, such as boot-up messages.
Note: ACPI_[WARNING|INFO|ERROR]() are intended for the ACPICA and
are not associated with the kernel message level.

The current platform device creation and registration code in
acpi_create_platform_device() is quite convoluted. This function
takes an ACPI device node as an argument and eventually calls
platform_device_register_resndata() to create and register a
platform device object on the basis of the information contained
in that code. However, it doesn't associate the new platform
device with the ACPI node directly, but instead it relies on
acpi_platform_notify(), called from within device_add(), to find
that ACPI node again with the help of acpi_platform_find_device()
and acpi_platform_match() and then attach the new platform device
to it. This causes an additional ACPI namespace walk to happen and
is clearly suboptimal.
Use the observation that it is now possible to initialize the ACPI
handle of a device before calling device_add() for it to make this
code more straightforward. Namely, add a new field to struct
platform_device_info allowing us to pass the ACPI handle of interest
to platform_device_register_full(), which will then use it to
initialize the new device's ACPI handle before registering it.
This will cause acpi_platform_notify() to use the ACPI handle from
the device structure directly instead of using the .find_device()
routine provided by the device's bus type. In consequence,
acpi_platform_bus, acpi_platform_find_device(), and
acpi_platform_match() are not necessary any more, so remove them.

Currently, the ACPI handles of devices are initialized from within
device_add(), by acpi_bind_one() called from acpi_platform_notify()
which first uses the .find_device() routine provided by the device's
bus type to find the matching device node in the ACPI namespace.
This is a source of some computational overhead and, moreover, the
correctness of the result depends on the implementation of
.find_device() which is known to fail occasionally for some bus types
(e.g. PCI). In some cases, however, the corresponding ACPI device
node is known already before calling device_add() for the given
struct device object and the whole .find_device() dance in
acpi_platform_notify() is then simply unnecessary.
For this reason, make it possible to initialize the ACPI handles of
devices before calling device_add() for them. Modify
acpi_platform_notify() to call acpi_bind_one() in advance to check
the device's existing ACPI handle and skip the .find_device()
search if that is successful. Change acpi_bind_one() accordingly.

Add a quirk to correctly report battery capacity on 2010 and 2011
Lenovo Thinkpad models.
The affected models that I tested (x201, t410, t410s, and x220)
exhibit a problem where, when battery capacity reporting unit is mAh,
the values being reported are wrong. Pre-2010 and 2012 models appear
to always report in mWh and are thus unaffected. Also, in mid-2012
Lenovo issued a BIOS update for the 2011 models that fixes the issue
(tested on x220 with a post-1.29 BIOS). No such update is available
for the 2010 models, so those still need this patch.
Problem description: for some reason, the affected Thinkpads switch
the reporting unit between mAh and mWh; generally, mAh is used when a

Can you see how the values for "design capacity", etc., differ by a
factor of 10 instead of 14.8 (the design voltage of this battery)?
On the battery itself it says: 14.8V, 1.95Ah, 29Wh, so clearly the
values reported in mWh are correct and the ones in mAh are not.
My guess is that this problem has been around ever since those
machines were released, but because the most common Thinkpad
batteries are rated at 10.8V, the error (8%) is small enough that it
simply hasn't been noticed or at least nobody could be bothered to
look into it.
My patch works around the problem by adjusting the incorrectly
reported mAh values by "10000 / design_voltage". The patch also has
code to figure out if it should be activated or not. It only
activates on Lenovo Thinkpads, only when the unit is mAh, and, as an
extra precaution, only when the battery capacity reported through
ACPI does not match what is reported through DMI (I've never
encountered a machine where the first two conditions would be true
but the last would not, but better safe than sorry).
I've been using this patch for close to a year on several systems
without any problems.

_SUN method provides the slot unique-ID in the ACPI namespace. And The value
is written in Advanced Configuration and Power Interface Specification as
follows:
"The _SUN value is required to be unique among the slots ofthe same type.
It is also recommended that this number match the slot number printed on
the physical slot whenever possible."
So if we can know the value, we can identify the physical position of the
slot in the system.
The patch creates "sun" file in sysfs for identifying physical position
of the slot.

Currently, whoever wants to use ACPI device resources has to call
acpi_walk_resources() to browse the buffer returned by the _CRS
method for the given device and create filters passed to that
routine to apply to the individual resource items. This generally
is cumbersome, time-consuming and inefficient. Moreover, it may
be problematic if resource conflicts need to be resolved, because
the different users of _CRS will need to do that in a consistent
way. However, if there are resource conflicts, the ACPI core
should be able to resolve them centrally instead of relying on
various users of acpi_walk_resources() to handle them correctly
together.
For this reason, introduce a new function, acpi_dev_get_resources(),
that can be used by subsystems to obtain a list of struct resource
objects corresponding to the ACPI device resources returned by
_CRS and, if necessary, to apply additional preprocessing routine
to the ACPI resources before converting them to the struct resource
format.
Make the ACPI code that creates platform device objects use
acpi_dev_get_resources() for resource processing instead of executing
acpi_walk_resources() twice by itself, which causes it to be much
more straightforward and easier to follow.
In the future, acpi_dev_get_resources() can be extended to meet
the needs of the ACPI PNP subsystem and other users of _CRS in
the kernel.

With ACPI 5 it is now possible to enumerate traditional SoC
peripherals, like serial bus controllers and slave devices behind
them. These devices are typically based on IP-blocks used in many
existing SoC platforms and platform drivers for them may already
be present in the kernel tree.
To make driver "porting" more straightforward, add ACPI support to
the platform bus type. Instead of writing ACPI "glue" drivers for
the existing platform drivers, register the platform bus type with
ACPI to create platform device objects for the drivers and bind the
corresponding ACPI handles to those platform devices.
This should allow us to reuse the existing platform drivers for the
devices in question with the minimum amount of modifications.

With ACPI 5 we are starting to see devices that don't natively support
discovery but can be enumerated with the help of the ACPI namespace.
Typically, these devices can be represented in the Linux device driver
model as platform devices or some serial bus devices, like SPI or I2C
devices.
Since we want to re-use existing drivers for those devices, we need a
way for drivers to specify the ACPI IDs of supported devices, so that
they can be matched against device nodes in the ACPI namespace. To
this end, it is sufficient to add a pointer to an array of supported
ACPI device IDs, that can be provided by the driver, to struct device.
Moreover, things like ACPI power management need to have access to
the ACPI handle of each supported device, because that handle is used
to invoke AML methods associated with the corresponding ACPI device
node. The ACPI handles of devices are now stored in the archdata
member structure of struct device whose definition depends on the
architecture and includes the ACPI handle only on x86 and ia64. Since
the pointer to an array of supported ACPI IDs is added to struct
device_driver in an architecture-independent way, it is logical to
move the ACPI handle from archdata to struct device itself at the same
time. This also makes code more straightforward in some places and
follows the example of Device Trees that have a poiter to struct
device_node in there too.

The ACPI specificiation would like us to save NVS at hibernation time,
but makes no mention of saving NVS over S3. Not all versions of
Windows do this either, and it is clear that not all machines need NVS
saved/restored over S3. Allow the user to improve their suspend/resume
time by disabling the NVS save/restore at S3 time, but continue to do
the NVS save/restore for S4 as specified.

During hot-remove, acpi_bus_hot_remove_device() calls ACPI _LCK
method when device->flags.lockable is set. However, this device
pointer is stale since the target acpi_device object has been
already kfree'd by acpi_bus_trim().
The flags.lockable indicates whether or not this ACPI object
implements _LCK method. Fix the stable pointer access by replacing
it with acpi_get_handle() to check if _LCK is implemented.

Even if acpi_processor_handle_eject() offlines cpu, there is a chance
to online the cpu after that. So the patch closes the window by using
get/put_online_cpus().
Why does the patch change _cpu_up() logic?
The patch cares the race of hot-remove cpu and _cpu_up(). If the patch
does not change it, there is the following race.
hot-remove cpu | _cpu_up()
------------------------------------- ------------------------------------
call acpi_processor_handle_eject() |
call cpu_down() |
call get_online_cpus() |
| call cpu_hotplug_begin() and stop here
call arch_unregister_cpu() |
call acpi_unmap_lsapic() |
call put_online_cpus() |
| start and continue _cpu_up()
return acpi_processor_remove() |
continue hot-remove the cpu |
So _cpu_up() can continue to itself. And hot-remove cpu can also continue
itself. If the patch changes _cpu_up() logic, the race disappears as below:
hot-remove cpu | _cpu_up()
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
call acpi_processor_handle_eject() |
call cpu_down() |
call get_online_cpus() |
| call cpu_hotplug_begin() and stop here
call arch_unregister_cpu() |
call acpi_unmap_lsapic() |
cpu's cpu_present is set |
to false by set_cpu_present()|
call put_online_cpus() |
| start _cpu_up()
| check cpu_present() and return -EINVAL
return acpi_processor_remove() |
continue hot-remove the cpu |

Some bus types don't support power management natively, but generally
there may be device nodes in ACPI tables corresponding to the devices
whose bus types they are (under ACPI 5 those bus types may be SPI,
I2C and platform). If that is the case, standard ACPI power
management may be applied to those devices, although currently the
kernel has no means for that.
For this reason, provide a set of routines that may be used as power
management callbacks for such devices. This may be done in three
different ways.
(1) Device drivers handling the devices in question may run
acpi_dev_pm_attach() in their .probe() routines, which (on
success) will cause the devices to be added to the general ACPI
PM domain and ACPI power management will be used for them going
forward. Then, acpi_dev_pm_detach() may be used to remove the
devices from the general ACPI PM domain if ACPI power management
is not necessary for them any more.
(2) The devices' subsystems may use acpi_subsys_runtime_suspend(),
acpi_subsys_runtime_resume(), acpi_subsys_prepare(),
acpi_subsys_suspend_late(), acpi_subsys_resume_early() as their
power management callbacks in the same way as the general ACPI
PM domain does that.
(3) The devices' drivers may execute acpi_dev_suspend_late(),
acpi_dev_resume_early(), acpi_dev_runtime_suspend(),
acpi_dev_runtime_resume() from their power management callbacks
as appropriate, if that's absolutely necessary, but it is not
recommended to do that, because such drivers may not work
without ACPI support as a result.

If the caller of acpi_bus_set_power() already has a pointer to the
struct acpi_device object corresponding to the device in question, it
doesn't make sense for it to go through acpi_bus_get_device(), which
may be costly, because it involves acquiring the global ACPI
namespace mutex.
For this reason, export the function operating on struct acpi_device
objects used internally by acpi_bus_set_power(), so that it may be
called instead of acpi_bus_set_power() in the above case, and change
its name to acpi_device_set_power().
Additionally, introduce two inline wrappers for checking ACPI PM
capabilities of devices represented by struct acpi_device objects.
Signed-off-by: Rafael J. Wysocki <rafael.j.wysocki@intel.com>
Two device wakeup management routines in device_pm.c and sleep.c,
acpi_pm_device_run_wake() and acpi_pm_device_sleep_wake(), take a
device pointer argument and use it to obtain the ACPI handle of the
corresponding ACPI namespace node. That handle is then used to get
the address of the struct acpi_device object corresponding to the
struct device passed as the argument.
Unfortunately, that last operation may be costly, because it involves
taking the global ACPI namespace mutex, so it shouldn't be carried
out too often. However, the callers of those routines usually call
them in a row with acpi_pm_device_sleep_state() which also takes that
mutex for the same reason, so it would be more efficient if they ran
acpi_bus_get_device() themselves to obtain a pointer to the struct
acpi_device object in question and then passed that pointer to the
appropriate PM routines.
To make that possible, split each of the PM routines mentioned above
in two parts, one taking a struct acpi_device pointer argument and
the other implementing the current interface for compatibility.
Additionally, change acpi_pm_device_run_wake() to actually return
an error code if there is an error while setting up runtime remote
wakeup for the device.

However, instead of moving the function entirely, move its core only

Make ACPI power management routines and PCI power management
routines depending on ACPI take device PM QoS flags into account
when deciding what power state to put the device into.
In particular, after this change acpi_pm_device_sleep_state() will
not return ACPI_STATE_D3_COLD as the deepest available low-power
state if PM_QOS_FLAG_NO_POWER_OFF is requested for the device and it
will not require remote wakeup to work for the device in the returned
low-power state if there is at least one PM QoS flags request for the
device, but PM_QOS_FLAG_REMOTE_WAKEUP is not requested for it.
Accordingly, acpi_pci_set_power_state() will refuse to put the
device into D3cold if PM_QOS_FLAG_NO_POWER_OFF is requested for it.

Add support to export the device description obtained from the ACPI _STR
method, if one exists for a device, to user-space via a sysfs interface.
This new interface provides a standard and platform neutral way for users
to obtain the description text stored in the ACPI _STR method. If no
_STR method exists for the device, no sysfs 'description' file will be
created. The 'description' file will be located in the /sys/devices/
directory using the device's path.
/sys/device/<bus>/<bridge path>/<device path>.../firmware_node/description
Example:
/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00.07.0/0000:0e:00.0/firmware_node/description
It can also be located using the ACPI device path, for example:
/sys/devices/LNXSYSTM:00/device:00/ACPI0004:00/PNP0A08:00/device:13/device:15/description
/sys/devices/LNXSYSTM:00/device:00/ACPI0004:00/ACPI0004:01/ACPI0007:02/description
Execute the 'cat' command on the 'description' file to obtain the

The Linux EC driver includes a mechanism to detect GPE storms,
and switch from interrupt-mode to polling mode. However, polling
mode sometimes doesn't work, so the workaround is problematic.
Also, different systems seem to need the threshold for detecting
the GPE storm at different levels.
ACPI_EC_STORM_THRESHOLD was initially 20 when it's created, and
was changed to 8 in 2.6.28 commit 06cf7d3c7 "ACPI: EC: lower interrupt storm
threshold" to fix kernel bug 11892 by forcing the laptop in that bug to
work in polling mode. However in bug 45151, it works fine in interrupt
mode if we lift the threshold back to 20.
This patch makes the threshold a module parameter so that user has a
flexible option to debug/workaround this issue.
The default is unchanged.

Previous patches stored ACPI tables provided via initrd in a memblock reserved
area.
If a table is loaded and the table type of an initrd provided one matches,
the one from initrd is prefered.
In case of a SSDT table, the OEM table id also has to match.
ACPI tables can be loaded at boot time (static table pointers in XSDT),
but also dynamically any time later via ASL commands load() or loadTable().
The override mechanism always works.

The ACPI BGRT driver accesses the BIOS logo image when it initializes.
However, ACPI 5.0 (which introduces the BGRT) recommends putting the
logo image in EFI boot services memory, so that the OS can reclaim that
memory. Production systems follow this recommendation, breaking the
ACPI BGRT driver.
Move the bulk of the BGRT code to run during a new EFI late
initialization phase, which occurs after switching EFI to virtual mode,
and after initializing ACPI, but before freeing boot services memory.
Copy the BIOS logo image to kernel memory at that point, and make it
accessible to the BGRT driver. Rework the existing ACPI BGRT driver to
act as a simple wrapper exposing that image (and the properties from the
BGRT) via sysfs.

We can access acpi_pci_root without scanning acpi_pci_roots list.
If hostbridge hotplug is supported, acpi_pci_roots list will be

if preventable to lessen deadlock risk.

This patch changes the function signature of walk_root_bridge().
We can omit _STA, _SEG, and _BBN evaluation by passing not acpi_handle
but acpi_pci_root. Now that acpi_pci_slot_add() which is the only
caller of walk_root_bridge() gets acpi_pci_root structure, changing
signature of walk_root_bridge() is reasonable.

This patch changes .add/.remove interfaces of acpi_pci_driver.
In the current implementation acpi_handle is passed as a parameter
of .add/.remove interface. However, the acpi_pci_root structure
contains more useful information than just the acpi_handle. This
enables us to avoid some useless lookups in each acpi_pci_driver.
Note: This changes interfaces used by acpi_pci_register_driver(), an
exported symbol. This patch updates all the in-kernel users, but any
out-of-kernel acpi_pci_register_driver() users will need updates.

According to ACPI spec, tc1 and tc2 are used by OSPM
to anticipate the temperature trends.
We introduced the same concept to the generic thermal layer
for passive cooling, but now it seems that these values
are hard to be used on other platforms.
So We introduce .get_trend() as a more general solution.
For the platform thermal drivers that have their own way to
anticipate the temperature trends, they should provide
their own .get_trend() callback.
Or else, we will calculate the temperature trends by simply
comparing the current temperature and the cached previous
temperature reading.

A USB port's position and connectability can't be identified on some boards
via USB hub registers. ACPI _UPC and _PLD can help to resolve this issue
and so it is necessary to bind USB with ACPI. This patch is to allow ACPI
binding with USB-3.0 hub.
Current ACPI only can bind one struct-device to one ACPI device node.
This can not work with USB-3.0 hub, because the USB-3.0 hub has two logical
devices. Each works for USB-2.0 and USB-3.0 devices. In the Linux USB subsystem,
those two logical hubs are treated as two seperate devices that have two struct
devices. But in the ACPI DSDT, these two logical hubs share one ACPI device
node. So there is a requirement to bind multi struct-devices to one ACPI
device node. This patch is to resolve such problem.
Following is the ACPI device nodes' description under xhci hcd.

The standard video events may be overloaded for device specific
purposes. For example AMD ACPI interface overloads
ACPI_VIDEO_NOTIFY_PROBE (0x81) to signal AMD-specific events. In such
cases we don't want to send the keypress (KEY_SWITCHVIDEOMODE) to the
userspace because the user did not press the mode switch key (the
spurious keypress confuses the DE which usually changes the
display configuration and messes up a dual-screen setup).
This patch gives the handlers the chance to examine the event and
block the keypress if the event is device specific.

Currently we have the cpuidle_device field in the acpi_processor_power structure.
This adds a dependency between processor.h and cpuidle.h
Although it is not a real problem, removing this dependency has the benefit of
separating a bit more the cpuidle code from the rest of the acpi code.
Also, the compilation should be a bit improved because we do no longer
include cpuidle.h in processor.h. The preprocessor was generating 30418 loc
and with this patch it generates 30256 loc for processor_thermal.c, a file
which is not concerned at all by cpuidle, like processor_perflib.c and
processor_throttling.c.
That may sound ridiculous, but "small streams make big rivers" :P
This patch moves this field into a static global per cpu variable like what is
done in the intel_idle driver.

commit a606dac368 adds support to link
devices which have _PRx, if a device does not have _PRx, a warning
message will be printed.
This commit is for ZPODD on Intel ZPODD capable platforms, on other
platforms, it has no problem if there is no power resource for this
device, so a warning here is not appropriate, change it to debug.

Commit 0090def("ACPI: Add interface to register/unregister device
to/from power resources") used resource_lock to protect the devices list
that relies on power resource. It caused a mutex dead lock, as below
acpi_power_on ---> lock resource_lock
__acpi_power_on
acpi_power_on_device
acpi_power_get_inferred_state
acpi_power_get_list_state ---> lock resource_lock
This patch adds a new mutex "devices_lock" to protect the devices list
and calls acpi_power_on_device in acpi_power_on, instead of
__acpi_power_on, after the resource_lock is released.

It turns out that there are ACPI BIOSes defining device objects with
_PSx and without either _PSC or _PRx. For devices corresponding to
those ACPI objetcs __acpi_bus_get_power() returns ACPI_STATE_UNKNOWN
and their initial power states are regarded as unknown as a result.
If such a device is a parent of another power-manageable device, the
child cannot be put into a low-power state through ACPI, because
__acpi_bus_set_power() refuses to change power states of devices
whose parents' power states are unknown.
To work around this problem, observe that the ACPI power state of
a device cannot be higher-power (lower-number) than the power state
of its parent. Thus, if the device's _PSC method or the
configuration of its power resources indicates that the device is
in D0, the device's parent has to be in D0 as well. Consequently,
if the parent's power state is unknown when we've just learned that
its child's power state is D0, we can safely set the parent's
power.state field to ACPI_STATE_D0.

If acpi_pci_osc_support() fails for the given flags, it doesn't make
sense to call acpi_pci_osc_control_set() down the road for the same
flags, because it will certainly fail too. Moreover, problem
diagnostics is then harder, because it is not too easy to identify
the reason of the _OSC failure in those cases.
For this reason, check the status returned by acpi_pci_osc_support()
for PCIe support flags and do not attempt to execute
acpi_pci_osc_control_set() for those flags and print a message if
it's "failure". For compatibility with the existing code, disable
ASPM in that case too.

_GTS and _BFS were added to the suspend/resume flow
in the ACPI 2.0 specification.
Linux dutifully implemented _GTS and _BFS.
We discovered that it was rarely seen in systems
in the field. Further, some of those systems had
AML so bogus that it could never work -- proof that
no other operating system supports _GTS and _BFS.
So we made _GTS and _BFS optional via modparam,
and disabled them by default.
But we've had to complicate some code to keep
this support in the kernel, as these methods are defined
to be evaluated very close to sleep entry and exit.
Indeed, no other AML is ever evaluated with interrupts off.
We have submitted a proposal for _GTS and _BFS
to be officially removed from the ACPI specification
on the next revision. Here we remove it from Linux.

Instead of adding a big blacklist in video_detect.c to set
ACPI_VIDEO_BACKLIGHT_DMI_VENDOR correctly, let external modules
promote or demote themselves when they know the generic video
module won't work.
Currently drivers where using acpi_video_unregister() directly
but:
- That didn't respect any acpi_backlight=[video|vendor] parameter
provided by the user.
- Any later call to acpi_video_register() would still re-load the
generic video module (and some gpu drivers are doing that).

Commit d640113fe8 introduced a regression on SMP
systems where the processor core with ACPI id zero is disabled
(typically should be the case because of hyperthreading).
The regression got spread through stable kernels.
On 3.0.X it got introduced via 3.0.18.
Such platforms may be rare, but do exist.
Look out for a disabled processor with acpi_id 0 in dmesg:
ACPI: LAPIC (acpi_id[0x00] lapic_id[0x10] disabled)

On certain bios, resume hangs if cpus are allowed to enter idle states
during suspend [1].
This was fixed in apci idle driver [2].But intel_idle driver does not
have this fix. Thus instead of replicating the fix in both the idle
drivers, or in more platform specific idle drivers if needed, the
more general cpuidle infrastructure could handle this.
A suspend callback in cpuidle_driver could handle this fix. But
a cpuidle_driver provides only basic functionalities like platform idle
state detection capability and mechanisms to support entry and exit
into CPU idle states. All other cpuidle functions are found in the
cpuidle generic infrastructure for good reason that all cpuidle
drivers, irrepective of their platforms will support these functions.
One option therefore would be to register a suspend callback in cpuidle
which handles this fix. This could be called through a PM_SUSPEND_PREPARE
notifier. But this is too generic a notfier for a driver to handle.
Also, ideally the job of cpuidle is not to handle side effects of suspend.
It should expose the interfaces which "handle cpuidle 'during' suspend"
or any other operation, which the subsystems call during that respective
operation.
The fix demands that during suspend, no cpus should be allowed to enter
deep C-states. The interface cpuidle_uninstall_idle_handler() in cpuidle
ensures that. Not just that it also kicks all the cpus which are already
in idle out of their idle states which was being done during cpu hotplug
through a CPU_DYING_FROZEN callbacks.
Now the question arises about when during suspend should
cpuidle_uninstall_idle_handler() be called. Since we are dealing with
drivers it seems best to call this function during dpm_suspend().
Delaying the call till dpm_suspend_noirq() does no harm, as long as it is
before cpu_hotplug_begin() to avoid race conditions with cpu hotpulg
operations. In dpm_suspend_noirq(), it would be wise to place this call
before suspend_device_irqs() to avoid ugly interactions with the same.
Ananlogously, during resume.

The acpi_pad driver can get stuck in destroy_power_saving_task()
waiting for kthread_stop() to stop a power_saving thread. The problem
is that the isolated_cpus_lock mutex is owned when
destroy_power_saving_task() calls kthread_stop(), which waits for a
power_saving thread to end, and the power_saving thread tries to
acquire the isolated_cpus_lock when it calls round_robin_cpu(). This
patch fixes the issue by making round_robin_cpu() use its own mutex.

Commit e978aa7d7d ( cpuidle: Move

This was fixed in commit 3439a8da16
(ACPI / cpuidle: Remove acpi_idle_suspend (to fix suspend regression)
by removing acpi_idle_suspend flag.
But this did fix did not work on all systems
as Suspend/resume regression was reported on Lenovo S10-3
recently by Dave.
It looked like with commit e978aa7d broke suspend and
with commit 3439a8da resume was not working with acpi_idle driver.
This patch fixes the regression that caused this issue
in the first place. acpi_idle_suspend flag is essential on
some x86 systems to prevent the cpus from going to deeper C-states
when suspend is triggered ( commit b04e7bdb98 )
So reverting the commit 3439a8da is essential.
By default, irqs are disabled in cpu_idle arch specific call
and re-enabled in idle state return path . During suspend,
the acpi_idle_suspend flag is set, which
prevents the cpus from going to deeper idle states,
it is essential to enabling the irqs in this return path too.
To address the suspend issue,
we were not re-enabling the interrupts while returning from
acpi_idle_enter_bm() routine if acpi_idle_suspend flag is set.
and this caused suspend failure.
In addition to the above, to improve the readability of the code,
return of -ENIVAL is replaced with -EBUSY in acpi_idle_suspend
return path. Implying that the system is currently busy when suspend
is in progress, which prevents the cpus from entering deeper C-states.

Added acpi_evaluate_hotplug_opt(). All ACPI hotplug handlers must call
this function when evaluating _OST for hotplug operations. If the
platform does not support _OST, this function returns AE_NOT_FOUND and
has no effect on the platform.
ACPI_HOTPLUG_OST is defined when all relevant ACPI hotplug operations,
such as CPU, memory and container hotplug, are enabled. This assures
consistent behavior among the hotplug operations with regarding the
_OST support. When ACPI_HOTPLUG_OST is not defined, this function is
a no-op.
ACPI PCI hotplug is not enhanced to support _OST at this time since it
is a legacy method being replaced by PCIe native hotplug. _OST support
for ACPI PCI hotplug may be added in future if necessary.
Some platforms may require the OS to support _OST in order to support
ACPI hotplug operations. For example, if a platform has the management
console where user can request a hotplug operation from, this _OST
support would be required for the management console to show the result
of the hotplug request to user.
Added macro definitions of _OST source events and status codes.
Also renamed OSC_SB_CPUHP_OST_SUPPORT to OSC_SB_HOTPLUG_OST_SUPPORT
since this _OSC bit is not specific to CPU hotplug. This bit is
defined in Table 6-147 of ACPI 5.0 as follows.

Pull x86 trampoline rework from H. Peter Anvin:
"This code reworks all the "trampoline"/"realmode" code (various bits
that need to live in the first megabyte of memory, most but not all of
which runs in real mode at some point) in the kernel into a single
object. The main reason for doing this is that it eliminates the last
place in the kernel where we needed pages to be mapped RWX. This code
separates all that code into proper R/RW/RX pages."
Fix up conflicts in arch/x86/kernel/Makefile (mca removed next to reboot
code), and arch/x86/kernel/reboot.c (reboot code moved around in one
branch, modified in this one), and arch/x86/tools/relocs.c (mostly same
code came in earlier due to working around the ld bugs just before the
3.4 release).
Also remove stale x86-relocs entry from scripts/.gitignore as per Peter
Anvin.

The comparison between the system sleep state being entered
and the lowest system sleep state the given device may wake up
from in acpi_pm_device_sleep_state() is reversed, because the
specification (ACPI 5.0) says that for wakeup to work:
"The sleeping state being entered must be less than or equal to the
power state declared in element 1 of the _PRW object."
In other words, the state returned by _PRW is the deepest
(lowest-power) system sleep state the device is capable of waking up
the system from.
Moreover, acpi_pm_device_sleep_state() also should check if the
wakeup capability is supported through ACPI, because in principle it
may be done via native PCIe PME, for example, in which case _SxW
should not be evaluated.

After recent changes of the ACPI device power states definitions, if
power resources are not used for the device's power management, the
state returned by __acpi_bus_get_power() cannot exceed D3hot, because
the return values of _PSC are 0 through 3. However, if the _PR3
method is not present for the device and _PS3 returns 3, we have to
assume that the device is in D3cold, so the value returned by
__acpi_bus_get_power() in that case should be 4.
Similarly, acpi_power_get_inferred_state() should take the power
resources for the D3hot state into account in general, so that it
can return 3 if those resources are "on" or 4 (D3cold) otherwise.
Fix the the above two issues and make sure that if both _PSC and
_PR3 are present for the device, the power resources listed by _PR3
will be used to determine if the number 3 returned by _PSC is meant
to represent D3cold or D3hot.

After recent changes of the ACPI device low-power states definitions
kernel messages in drivers/acpi/bus.c need to be updated so that they
include the correct names of the states in question (currently is
"D3" for D3hot and "D4" for D3cold, which is incorrect).

When the system is woken up by the ACPI fixed power button, currently there
is no way of userspace becoming aware that the power button was pressed.
OLPC would like to know this, so that we can respond appropriately.
For example, if the system was woken up by a network packet, we know
we can go back to sleep very quickly. But if the user explicitly woke the
system with the power button, we're going to want to stay awake for a
while.
The wakeup count mechanism seems like a good fit for communicating this.
Mark the fixed power button as wakeup-enabled, and increment its wakeup
counter when the system is woken with the power button. (The wakeup counter
is also incremented when the power button is pressed during system
operation; this is already handled by an existing acpi-button codepath).

due to some API cleanups (getting rid of the ancient err() macro) and
some changes that are needed for USB 3.0 power management updates.
There are also lots of new drivers, pimarily gadget, but others as well.
We deleted a staging driver, which was nice, and finally dropped the
obsolete usbfs code, which will make Al happy to never have to touch

Commit 1cc0c998fd ("ACPI: Fix D3hot v D3cold confusion") introduced a
bug in __acpi_bus_set_power() and changed the behavior of
acpi_pci_set_power_state() in such a way that it generally doesn't work
as expected if PCI_D3hot is passed to it as the second argument.
First off, if ACPI_STATE_D3 (equal to ACPI_STATE_D3_COLD) is passed to
__acpi_bus_set_power() and the explicit_set flag is set for the D3cold
state, the function will try to execute AML method called "_PS4", which
doesn't exist.
Fix this by adding a check to ensure that the name of the AML method
to execute for transitions to ACPI_STATE_D3_COLD is correct in
__acpi_bus_set_power(). Also make sure that the explicit_set flag
for ACPI_STATE_D3_COLD will be set if _PS3 is present and modify
acpi_power_transition() to avoid accessing power resources for
ACPI_STATE_D3_COLD, because they don't exist.
Second, if PCI_D3hot is passed to acpi_pci_set_power_state() as the
target state, the function will request a transition to
ACPI_STATE_D3_HOT instead of ACPI_STATE_D3. However,
ACPI_STATE_D3_HOT is now only marked as supported if the _PR3 AML
method is defined for the given device, which is rare. This causes
problems to happen on systems where devices were successfully put
into ACPI D3 by pci_set_power_state(PCI_D3hot) which doesn't work
now. In particular, some unused graphics adapters are not turned
off as a result.
To fix this issue restore the old behavior of
acpi_pci_set_power_state(), which is to request a transition to
ACPI_STATE_D3 (equal to ACPI_STATE_D3_COLD) if either PCI_D3hot or
PCI_D3cold is passed to it as the argument.
This approach is not ideal, because generally power should not
be removed from devices if PCI_D3hot is the target power state,
but since this behavior is relied on, we have no choice but to
restore it at the moment and spend more time on designing a
better solution in the future.

* 'release' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/lenb/linux:
ACPI: Fix D3hot v D3cold confusion
Before this patch, ACPI_STATE_D3 incorrectly referenced D3hot
in some places, but D3cold in other places.
After this patch, ACPI_STATE_D3 always means ACPI_STATE_D3_COLD;
and all references to D3hot use ACPI_STATE_D3_HOT.
ACPI's _PR3 method is used to enter both D3hot and D3cold states.
What distinguishes D3hot from D3cold is the presence _PR3
(Power Resources for D3hot) If these resources are all ON,
then the state is D3hot. If _PR3 is not present,
or all _PR0 resources for the devices are OFF,
then the state is D3cold.
This patch applies after Linux-3.4-rc1.
A future syntax cleanup may remove ACPI_STATE_D3
to emphasize that it always means ACPI_STATE_D3_COLD.

That commit fixes another machine (see

However, at least one of those other reporters no longer even has the

This reverts commit 6fe0d06282.
Paul bisected this regression.
The conversion was done blindly and is wrong, as it does not provide a
primary handler to disable the level type irq on the device level.
Neither does it set the IRQF_ONESHOT flag which handles that at the irq
line level. This can't be done as the interrupt might be shared, though
we might extend the core to force it.
So an interrupt on this line will wake up the thread, but immediately
unmask the irq after that. Due to the interrupt being level type the
hardware interrupt is raised over and over and prevents the irq thread
from handling it. Fail.
request_irq() unfortunately does not refuse such a request and the patch
was obviously never tested with real interrupts.

proliferation of the default_open() implementation across the entire
tree.
Now that the common implementation has been consolidated into libfs we
can replace all the users of this function with simple_open().
This replacement was done with the following semantic patch:

Using a u64 here creates an endian bug. We store a u32 number in the
top byte which is a larger number than intended on big endian systems.
There is no reason to use a 64 bit data type here, I guess it was just
an oversight.
I removed the initialization to zero as well. It's needed with a u64
but with a u32, the variable gets initialized properly inside the call
to acpi_os_read_port().

In addition to bus notifier we do install device notifier explicitly
so it might fire up early. The easiest fox would be to move
acpi_video_bus_start_devices() after input_allocate_device() but
before input_register_device() - unregistered input devices can handle
input_event() calls just fine.

ACPI 5.0 adds the BGRT, a table that contains a pointer to the firmware
boot splash and associated metadata. This simple driver exposes it via
/sys/firmware/acpi in order to allow bootsplash applications to draw their
splash around the firmware image and reduce the number of jarring graphical
transitions during boot.

The acpi_processor_cst_has_changed() function is invoked from a
CPU_ONLINE or CPU_DEAD function, which might well execute on CPU 0
even though the CPU being hotplugged is some other CPU. In addition,
acpi_processor_cst_has_changed() invokes smp_processor_id() without
protection, resulting in splats when onlining CPUs.
This commit therefore changes the smp_processor_id() to pr->id, as is
used elsewhere in the code, for example, in acpi_processor_add().

The function acpi_processor_add is stored in the ops.add field of a
acpi_driver structure. This function is then called in
acpi_bus_driver_init. On failure, this function clears the field
device->driver_data, but does not free its contents. Thus the free has to
be done by the add function. In acpi_processor_add, the corresponding
value is pr. This value is currently freed on failure before storing it in
device->driver_data, but not after. This free is added in the error
handling code at the end of the function. The per_cpu variable
processors is also cleared so that it does not refer to a dangling pointer.

The current code incorrectly assumes that
(1) the APEI register bit width is always 8, 16, 32, or 64 and
(2) the APEI register bit width is always equal to the APEI
register access width.
ERST serialization instructions entries such as:
[030h 0048 1] Action : 00 [Begin Write Operation]
[031h 0049 1] Instruction : 03 [Write Register Value]
[032h 0050 1] Flags (decoded below) : 01
Preserve Register Bits : 1
[033h 0051 1] Reserved : 00
[034h 0052 12] Register Region : [Generic Address Structure]
[034h 0052 1] Space ID : 00 [SystemMemory]
[035h 0053 1] Bit Width : 03
[036h 0054 1] Bit Offset : 00
[037h 0055 1] Encoded Access Width : 03 [DWord Access:32]
[038h 0056 8] Address : 000000007F2D7038

[048h 0072 8] Mask : 0000000000000007
break this assumption by yielding:
[Firmware Bug]: APEI: Invalid bit width in GAR [0x7f2d7038/3/0]
I have found no ACPI specification requirements corresponding
with the above assumptions. There is even a good example in
the Serialization Instruction Entries section (ACPI 4.0 section
17.4,1.2, ACPI 4.0a section 2.5.1.2, ACPI 5.0 section 18.5.1.2)
that mentions a serialization instruction with a bit range of
[6:2] which is 5 bits wide, _not_ 8, 16, 32, or 64 bits wide.

Some APEI firmware implementation will access injected address
specified in param1 to trigger the error when injecting memory
error, which means if one SRAR error is injected, the crash
always happens because it is executed in kernel context. This
new parameter can disable trigger action and control is taken
over by the user. In this way, an SRAR error can happen in user
context instead of crashing the system. This function is highly
depended on BIOS implementation so please ensure you know the
BIOS trigger procedure before you enable this switch.

processor in C1 state). This patch allows processors without MWAIT
