the What: fields on this file technically fulfills the description
at README. Yet, the way it is, it can't be parsed on a script,
and if someone would try to do something like:
grep hwmon*/jtag_enable
It wouldn't find anything.
Fix the What fields in a way that it can be parseable by a

The ADF4371 is a frequency synthesizer with an integrated voltage
controlled oscillator (VCO) for phase-locked loops (PLLs). The ADF4371
has an integrated VCO with a fundamental output frequency ranging from
4000 MHz to 8000 MHz. In addition, the VCO frequency is connected to
divide by 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, or 64 circuits that allows the user to
generate radio frequency (RF) output frequencies as low as 62.5 MHz at
RF8x. A frequency multiplier at RF16x generates from 8 GHz to 16 GHz. A
frequency quadrupler generates frequencies from 16 GHz to 32 GHz at RF32x.
RFAUX8x duplicates the frequency range of RF8x or permits direct access to
the VCO output.
The driver takes the reference input frequency from the device tree and
uses it to calculate and maximize the PFD frequency (frequency of the phase
frequency detector). The PFD frequency is further used to calculate the
timeouts: synthesizer lock, VCO band selection, automatic level
calibration (ALC) and PLL settling time.
This initial driver exposes the attributes for setting the frequency and
enabling/disabling the different adf4371 channels.

The WMI exposes a write-only device ID where up to three fan modes can be
switched on some laptops (TUF Gaming FX505GM). There is a hotkey
combination Fn-F5 that does have a fan icon, which is designed to toggle
between fan modes. The DSTS of the device ID returns information about the
presence of this capability and the presence of each of the two additional
fan modes as a bitmask (0x01 - overboost present, 0x02 - silent present)
[1].
Add a SysFS entry that reads the last written value and updates value in
WMI on write and a hotkey handler that toggles the modes taking into
account their availability according to DSTS.
Modes:
* 0x00 - normal or balanced,
* 0x01 - overboost, increased fan RPM,
* 0x02 - silent, decreased fan RPM

Allows using the addr/data32 debugfs nodes to access a device VA of a
host mapped memory when the IOMMU is disabled.
Due to the possible large amount of a user host mapped memory, the
driver doesn't maintain a database with the host addresses per device VA.
When the IOMMU is disabled, this missing info is being overcome by
simply using phys_to_virt(). However, this is not useful when the IOMMU
is enabled, and thus the enforced limitation.

When parsing via script, it is important to know if the script
should consider a description as a literal block that should
be displayed as-is, or if the description can be considered

Change descriptions to ensure that the preceding line of a table

Introduce a new type for reserved region. This corresponds
to directly mapped regions which are known to be relaxable
in some specific conditions, such as device assignment use
case. Well known examples are those used by USB controllers
providing PS/2 keyboard emulation for pre-boot BIOS and
early BOOT or RMRRs associated to IGD working in legacy mode.
Since commit c875d2c1b8 ("iommu/vt-d: Exclude devices using RMRRs
from IOMMU API domains") and commit 18436afdc1 ("iommu/vt-d: Allow
RMRR on graphics devices too"), those regions are currently
considered "safe" with respect to device assignment use case
which requires a non direct mapping at IOMMU physical level
(RAM GPA -> HPA mapping).
Those RMRRs currently exist and sometimes the device is
attempting to access it but this has not been considered
an issue until now.
However at the moment, iommu_get_group_resv_regions() is
not able to make any difference between directly mapped
regions: those which must be absolutely enforced and those
like above ones which are known as relaxable.
This is a blocker for reporting severe conflicts between
non relaxable RMRRs (like MSI doorbells) and guest GPA space.
With this new reserved region type we will be able to use
iommu_get_group_resv_regions() to enumerate the IOVA space
that is usable through the IOMMU API without introducing
regressions with respect to existing device assignment
use cases (USB and IGD).

lost would be higher, the mount will return -EAGAIN. This can be given
as a percent of total space, or in blocks.
Currently, we need to run garbage collection until the amount of holes

space as unusable up front instead of requiring garbage collection until

Pull x86 MDS mitigations from Thomas Gleixner:
"Microarchitectural Data Sampling (MDS) is a hardware vulnerability
which allows unprivileged speculative access to data which is
available in various CPU internal buffers. This new set of misfeatures
has the following CVEs assigned:
CVE-2018-12126 MSBDS Microarchitectural Store Buffer Data Sampling
CVE-2018-12130 MFBDS Microarchitectural Fill Buffer Data Sampling
CVE-2018-12127 MLPDS Microarchitectural Load Port Data Sampling
CVE-2019-11091 MDSUM Microarchitectural Data Sampling Uncacheable Memory
MDS attacks target microarchitectural buffers which speculatively
forward data under certain conditions. Disclosure gadgets can expose
this data via cache side channels.
Contrary to other speculation based vulnerabilities the MDS
vulnerability does not allow the attacker to control the memory target
address. As a consequence the attacks are purely sampling based, but
as demonstrated with the TLBleed attack samples can be postprocessed
successfully.
The mitigation is to flush the microarchitectural buffers on return to
user space and before entering a VM. It's bolted on the VERW
instruction and requires a microcode update. As some of the attacks
exploit data structures shared between hyperthreads, full protection
requires to disable hyperthreading. The kernel does not do that by
default to avoid breaking unattended updates.
The mitigation set comes with documentation for administrators and a
deeper technical view"

- USB serial driver updates and fixes
- typec updates and new chips supported

- xhci driver updates
- other tiny driver updates
Nothing really interesting, just constant forward progress.

Convert livepatch documentation to ReST format. The changes
are mostly trivial, as the documents are already on a good
shape. Just a few markup changes are needed for Sphinx to
properly parse the docs.
The conversion is actually:
- add blank lines and identation in order to identify paragraphs;
- fix tables markups;
- add some lists markups;
- mark literal blocks;
- The in-file TOC becomes a comment, in order to skip it from the
output, as Sphinx already generates an index there.
- adjust title markups.
At its new index.rst, let's add a :orphan: while this is not linked to
the main index.rst file, in order to avoid build warnings.

Feels like this tree is getting to be a dumping ground of "small driver
subsystems" these days. Which is fine with me, if it makes things
easier for those subsystem maintainers.
All of these have been in linux-next for a while with no reported
issues.

This is the first pull request for the char/misc driver tree for 5.2-rc1
This contains only a small number of bugfixes that would have gone to
you for 5.1-rc8 if that had happened, but instead I let them sit in
linux-next for an extra week just "to be sure".
The "big" patch here is for hyper-v, fixing a bug in their sysfs files
that could cause big problems. The others are all small fixes,
resolving reported issues that showed up in 5.1-rcs, plus some odd
'static' cleanups for the phy drivers that really should have waited for
-rc1. Most of these are tagged for the stable trees, so 5.1 will pick
them up.
All of these have been in linux-next for a while, with no reported

Here is the big staging and iio driver update for 5.2-rc1.
Lots of tiny fixes all over the staging and IIO driver trees here, along
with some new IIO drivers.
Also we ended up deleting two drivers, making this pull request remove a
few hundred thousand lines of code, always a nice thing to see. Both of
the drivers removed have been replaced with "real" drivers in their
various subsystem directories, and they will be coming to you from those
locations during this merge window.
There are some core vt/selection changes in here, that was due to some
cleanups needed for the speakup fixes. Those have all been acked by the
various subsystem maintainers (i.e. me), so those are ok.
We also added a few new drivers, for some odd hardware, giving new
developers plenty to work on with basic coding style cleanups to come in
the near future.
Other than that, nothing unusual here.
All of these have been in linux-next for a while with no reported
issues, other than an odd gcc warning for one of the new drivers that
should be fixed up soon.

Add POWER_SUPPLY_PROP_CHARGE_CONTROL_START_THRESHOLD
and POWER_SUPPLY_PROP_CHARGE_CONTROL_END_THRESHOLD properties, to expand
the existing CHARGE_CONTROL_* properties. I am adding them in order
to support a new Chrome OS device, but these properties should be
general enough that they can be used on other devices.
When the charge_type is "Custom", the charge controller uses the
POWER_SUPPLY_PROP_CHARGE_CONTROL_* properties as configuration for some
other algorithm. For example, in the use case that I am supporting,
this means the battery begins charging when the percentage
level drops below POWER_SUPPLY_PROP_CHARGE_CONTROL_START_THRESHOLD and
charging ceases when the percentage level goes above
POWER_SUPPLY_PROP_CHARGE_CONTROL_END_THRESHOLD.

property, to expand the existing "Trickle" and "Fast" modes.
I am adding them in order to support a new Chrome OS device,
but these properties should be general enough that they can be
used on other devices.
The meaning of "Standard" is obvious, but "Adaptive" and "Custom" are
more tricky: "Adaptive" means that the charge controller uses some
custom algorithm to change the charge type automatically, with no
configuration needed. "Custom" means that the charge controller uses the
POWER_SUPPLY_PROP_CHARGE_CONTROL_* properties as configuration for some
other algorithm.

Many nvmem providers are not very keen on having default sysfs
nvmem entry, as most of the usecases for them are inside kernel
itself. And in some cases read/writes to some areas in nvmem are
restricted and trapped at secure monitor level, so accessing them
from userspace would result in board reboots.
This patch adds new NVMEM_SYSFS Kconfig to make binary sysfs entry
an optional one. This provision will give more flexibility to users.
This patch also moves existing sysfs code to a new file so that its

CCGx has two copies of the firmware in addition to the bootloader.
If the device is running FW1, FW2 can be updated with the new version.
Dual firmware mode allows the CCG device to stay in a PD contract and
support USB PD and Type-C functionality while a firmware update is in
progress.
First we read the currently flashed firmware version of both
primary and secondary firmware and then compare it with
version of firmware file to determine if flashing is required.
Command framework is added to support sending commands to CCGx
controller. We wait for response after sending the command and then
read the response from RAB_RESPONSE register.
Below commands are supported,
- ENTER_FLASHING
- RESET
- PDPORT_ENABLE
- JUMP_TO_BOOT
- FLASH_ROW_RW
- VALIDATE_FW
Command specific mutex lock is also added to sync between driver
and user threads.
PD port number information is added which is required while sending
PD_PORT_ENABLE command

The behaviour, by default, to not deselect after each transfer is
unsafe when there is a device with an address that conflicts with
another device on another mux on the same parent bus, and it
may not be convenient to use devicetree to set the deselect mux,
e.g. when running on x86_64 when ACPI is used to discover most of the
device hierarchy.
Therefore, provide the ability to set the idle state behaviour using a
new sysfs file, idle_state as a complement to the method of
instantiating the device via sysfs. The possible behaviours are
disconnect, i.e. to deselect all channels from the mux, as-is (the
default), i.e. leave the last channel selected, and set a
predetermined channel.
The current behaviour of leaving the channel as-is after each
transaction is preserved.

As part of Chrome OS's FAFT (Fully Automated Firmware Testing)
tests, we need to ensure that the H1 chip is properly setting
some GPIO lines. The h1_gpio attribute exposes the state
of the lines:
- ENTRY_TO_FACT_MODE in BIT(0)
- SPI_CHROME_SEL in BIT(1)
There are two reasons that I am exposing this in debugfs,
and not as a GPIO:
1. This is only useful for testing, so end users shouldn't ever
care about this. In fact, if it passes the tests, then the value of
h1_gpio will always be 2, so it would be really uninteresting for users.
2. This GPIO is not connected to, controlled by, or really even related
to the AP. The GPIO runs between the EC and the H1 security chip.
Changes in v4:
- Use "0x02x\n" instead of "02x\n" for format string
- Use DEFINE_DEBUGFS_ATTRIBUTE()
- Add documentation
Changes in v3:
- Fix documentation to correspond with formatting change in v2.
Changes in v2:
- Zero out the unused fields in the request.
- Format result as "%02x\n" instead of as a decimal.

The current API for the wilco EC mailbox interface is bad.
It assumes that most messages sent to the EC follow a similar structure,
with a command byte in MBOX[0], followed by a junk byte, followed by
actual data. This doesn't happen in several cases, such as setting the
RTC time, using the raw debugfs interface, and reading or writing
properties such as the Peak Shift policy (this last to be submitted soon).
Similarly for the response message from the EC, the current interface
assumes that the first byte of data is always 0, and the second byte
is unused. However, in both setting and getting the RTC time, in the
debugfs interface, and for reading and writing properties, this isn't
true.
The current way to resolve this is to use WILCO_EC_FLAG_RAW* flags to
specify when and when not to skip these initial bytes in the sent and
received message. They are confusing and used so much that they are
normal, and not exceptions. In addition, the first byte of
response in the debugfs interface is still always skipped, which is
weird, since this raw interface should be giving the entire result.
Additionally, sent messages assume the first byte is a command, and so
struct wilco_ec_message contains the "command" field. In setting or
getting properties however, the first byte is not a command, and so this
field has to be filled with a byte that isn't actually a command. This
is again inconsistent.
wilco_ec_message contains a result field as well, copied from
wilco_ec_response->result. The message result field should be removed:
if the message fails, the cause is already logged, and the callers are
alerted. They will never care about the actual state of the result flag.
These flags and different cases make the wilco_ec_transfer() function,
used in wilco_ec_mailbox(), really gross, dealing with a bunch of
different cases. It's difficult to figure out what it is doing.
Finally, making these assumptions about the structure of a message make
it so that the messages do not correspond well with the specification
for the EC's mailbox interface. For instance, this interface
specification may say that MBOX[9] in the received message contains
some information, but the calling code needs to remember that the first
byte of response is always skipped, and because it didn't set the
RESPONSE_RAW flag, the next byte is also skipped, so this information
is actually contained within wilco_ec_message->response_data[7]. This
makes it difficult to maintain this code in the future.
To fix these problems this patch standardizes the mailbox interface by:
- Removing the WILCO_EC_FLAG_RAW* flags
- Removing the command and reserved_raw bytes from wilco_ec_request
- Removing the mbox0 byte from wilco_ec_response
- Simplifying wilco_ec_transfer() because of these changes
- Gives the callers of wilco_ec_mailbox() the responsibility of exactly
and consistently defining the structure of the mailbox request and
response
- Removing command and result from wilco_ec_message.
This results in the reduction of total code, and makes it much more
maintainable and understandable.

System memory may have caches to help improve access speed to frequently
requested address ranges. While the system provided cache is transparent
to the software accessing these memory ranges, applications can optimize
their own access based on cache attributes.
Provide a new API for the kernel to register these memory-side caches
under the memory node that provides it.
The new sysfs representation is modeled from the existing cpu cacheinfo
attributes, as seen from /sys/devices/system/cpu/<cpu>/cache/. Unlike CPU
cacheinfo though, the node cache level is reported from the view of the
memory. A higher level number is nearer to the CPU, while lower levels
are closer to the last level memory.
The exported attributes are the cache size, the line size, associativity
indexing, and write back policy, and add the attributes for the system
memory caches to sysfs stable documentation.

Heterogeneous memory systems provide memory nodes with different latency
and bandwidth performance attributes. Provide a new kernel interface
for subsystems to register the attributes under the memory target
node's initiator access class. If the system provides this information,
applications may query these attributes when deciding which node to
request memory.
The following example shows the new sysfs hierarchy for a node exporting
performance attributes:
# tree -P "read*|write*"/sys/devices/system/node/nodeY/accessZ/initiators/
/sys/devices/system/node/nodeY/accessZ/initiators/
|-- read_bandwidth
|-- read_latency
|-- write_bandwidth
`-- write_latency
The bandwidth is exported as MB/s and latency is reported in
nanoseconds. The values are taken from the platform as reported by the
manufacturer.
Memory accesses from an initiator node that is not one of the memory's
access "Z" initiator nodes linked in the same directory may observe
different performance than reported here. When a subsystem makes use
of this interface, initiators of a different access number may not have
the same performance relative to initiators in other access numbers, or
omitted from the any access class' initiators.
Descriptions for memory access initiator performance access attributes
are added to sysfs stable documentation.

Systems may be constructed with various specialized nodes. Some nodes
may provide memory, some provide compute devices that access and use
that memory, and others may provide both. Nodes that provide memory are
referred to as memory targets, and nodes that can initiate memory access
are referred to as memory initiators.
Memory targets will often have varying access characteristics from
different initiators, and platforms may have ways to express those
relationships. In preparation for these systems, provide interfaces for
the kernel to export the memory relationship among different nodes memory
targets and their initiators with symlinks to each other.
If a system provides access locality for each initiator-target pair, nodes
may be grouped into ranked access classes relative to other nodes. The
new interface allows a subsystem to register relationships of varying
classes if available and desired to be exported.
A memory initiator may have multiple memory targets in the same access
class. The target memory's initiators in a given class indicate the
nodes access characteristics share the same performance relative to other
linked initiator nodes. Each target within an initiator's access class,
though, do not necessarily perform the same as each other.
A memory target node may have multiple memory initiators. All linked
initiators in a target's class have the same access characteristics to
that target.
The following example show the nodes' new sysfs hierarchy for a memory
target node 'Y' with access class 0 from initiator node 'X':
# symlinks -v /sys/devices/system/node/nodeX/access0/
relative: /sys/devices/system/node/nodeX/access0/targets/nodeY -> ../../nodeY
# symlinks -v /sys/devices/system/node/nodeY/access0/
relative: /sys/devices/system/node/nodeY/access0/initiators/nodeX -> ../../nodeX
The new attributes are added to the sysfs stable documentation.

There are two methods for signaling the host: the monitor page mechanism
and hypercalls. The monitor page mechanism is used by performance
critical channels (storage, networking, etc.) because it provides
improved throughput. However, latency is increased. Monitor pages are
allocated to these channels.
Monitor pages are not allocated to channels that do not use the monitor
page mechanism. Therefore, these channels do not have a valid monitor id
or valid monitor page data. In these cases, some of the "_show"
functions return incorrect data. They return an invalid monitor id and
data that is beyond the bounds of the hv_monitor_page array fields.
The "channel->offermsg.monitor_allocated" value can be used to determine
whether monitor pages have been allocated to a channel.
Add "is_visible()" callback functions for the device-level and
channel-level attribute groups. These functions will hide the monitor
sysfs files when the monitor mechanism is not used.
Remove ".default_attributes" from "vmbus_chan_attrs" and create a
channel-level attribute group. These changes allow the new
"is_visible()" callback function to be applied to the channel-level
attributes.
Call "sysfs_create_group()" in "vmbus_add_channel_kobj()" to create the
channel's sysfs files. Add a new function,
“vmbus_remove_channel_attr_group()”, and call it in "free_channel()" to
remove the channel's sysfs files when the channel is closed.

Pull device-dax updates from Dan Williams:
"New device-dax infrastructure to allow persistent memory and other
"reserved" / performance differentiated memories, to be assigned to
the core-mm as "System RAM".
Some users want to use persistent memory as additional volatile
memory. They are willing to cope with potential performance
differences, for example between DRAM and 3D Xpoint, and want to use
typical Linux memory management apis rather than a userspace memory
allocator layered over an mmap() of a dax file. The administration
model is to decide how much Persistent Memory (pmem) to use as System
RAM, create a device-dax-mode namespace of that size, and then assign
it to the core-mm. The rationale for device-dax is that it is a
generic memory-mapping driver that can be layered over any "special
purpose" memory, not just pmem. On subsequent boots udev rules can be
used to restore the memory assignment.
One implication of using pmem as RAM is that mlock() no longer keeps
data off persistent media. For this reason it is recommended to enable
NVDIMM Security (previously merged for 5.0) to encrypt pmem contents
at rest. We considered making this recommendation an actively enforced
requirement, but in the end decided to leave it as a distribution /
administrator policy to allow for emulation and test environments that
lack security capable NVDIMMs.
Summary:
- Replace the /sys/class/dax device model with /sys/bus/dax, and
include a compat driver so distributions can opt-in to the new ABI.
- Allow for an alternative driver for the device-dax address-range
- Introduce the 'kmem' driver to hotplug / assign a device-dax
address-range to the core-mm.
- Arrange for the device-dax target-node to be onlined so that the
newly added memory range can be uniquely referenced by numa apis"
NOTE! I'm not entirely happy with the whole "PMEM as RAM" model because
we currently have special - and very annoying rules in the kernel about
accessing PMEM only with the "MC safe" accessors, because machine checks
inside the regular repeat string copy functions can be fatal in some
(not described) circumstances.
And apparently the PMEM modules can cause that a lot more than regular
RAM. The argument is that this happens because PMEM doesn't necessarily
get scrubbed at boot like RAM does, but that is planned to be added for
the user space tooling.
Quoting Dan from another email:
"The exposure can be reduced in the volatile-RAM case by scanning for
and clearing errors before it is onlined as RAM. The userspace tooling
for that can be in place before v5.1-final. There's also runtime
notifications of errors via acpi_nfit_uc_error_notify() from
background scrubbers on the DIMM devices. With that mechanism the
kernel could proactively clear newly discovered poison in the volatile
case, but that would be additional development more suitable for v5.2.
I understand the concern, and the need to highlight this issue by
tapping the brakes on feature development, but I don't see PMEM as RAM
making the situation worse when the exposure is also there via DAX in
the PMEM case. Volatile-RAM is arguably a safer use case since it's
possible to repair pages where the persistent case needs active
application coordination"

Pull f2fs updates from Jaegeuk Kim:
"We've continued mainly to fix bugs in this round, as f2fs has been
shipped in more devices. Especially, we've focused on stabilizing
checkpoint=disable feature, and provided some interfaces for QA.
Enhancements:
- expose FS_NOCOW_FL for pin_file
- run discard jobs at unmount time with timeout
- tune discarding thread to avoid idling which consumes power
- some checking codes to address vulnerabilities
- give random value to i_generation
- shutdown with more flags for QA
Bug fixes:
- clean up stale objects when mount is failed along with
checkpoint=disable
- fix system being stuck due to wrong count by atomic writes
- handle some corrupted disk cases
- fix a deadlock in f2fs_read_inline_dir
We've also added some minor build error fixes and clean-up patches"

Here is the big char/misc driver patch pull request for 5.1-rc1.
The largest thing by far is the new habanalabs driver for their AI
accelerator chip. For now it is in the drivers/misc directory but will
probably move to a new directory soon along with other drivers of this
type.
Other than that, just the usual set of individual driver updates and
fixes. There's an "odd" merge in here from the DRM tree that they asked
me to do as the MEI driver is starting to interact with the i915 driver,
and it needed some coordination. All of those patches have been
properly acked by the relevant subsystem maintainers.

For now the only way is `pgrep jbd2/$DISK` but this is not reliable:

This patch adds debugfs support to the driver. It allows the user-space to
display information that is contained in the internal structures of the
driver, such as:
- active command submissions
- active user virtual memory mappings
- number of allocated command buffers
It also enables the user to perform reads and writes through Goya's PCI
bars.

This patch add the sysfs and hwmon entries that are exposed by the driver.
Goya has several sensors, from various categories such as temperature,
voltage, current, etc. The driver exposes those sensors in the standard
hwmon mechanism.
In addition, the driver exposes a couple of interfaces in sysfs, both for
configuration and for providing status of the device or driver.
The configuration attributes is for Power Management:
- Automatic or manual
- Frequency value when moving to high frequency mode
- Maximum power the device is allowed to consume
The rest of the attributes are read-only and provide the following
information:
- Versions of the various firmwares running on the device
- Contents of the device's EEPROM
- The device type (currently only Goya is supported)
- PCI address of the device (to allow user-space to connect between
/dev/hlX to PCI address)
- Status of the device (operational, malfunction, in_reset)
- How many processes are open on the device's file

Counter values for per-channel interrupts and ring buffer full
conditions are useful for investigating performance.
Expose counters in sysfs for 2 types of guest to host interrupts:
1) Interrupts caused by the channel's outbound ring buffer transitioning
from empty to not empty
2) Interrupts caused by the channel's inbound ring buffer transitioning
from full to not full while a packet is waiting for enough buffer space to
become available
Expose 2 counters in sysfs for the number of times that write operations
encountered a full outbound ring buffer:
1) The total number of write operations that encountered a full
condition
2) The number of write operations that were the first to encounter a
full condition
Increment the outbound full condition counters in the
hv_ringbuffer_write() function because, for most drivers, a full
outbound ring buffer is detected in that function. Also increment the
outbound full condition counters in the set_channel_pending_send_size()
function. In the hv_sock driver, a full outbound ring buffer is detected
and set_channel_pending_send_size() is called before
hv_ringbuffer_write() is called.
I tested this patch by confirming that the sysfs files were created and
observing the counter values. The values seemed to increase by a
reasonable amount when the Hyper-v related drivers were in use.

This patch includes some fixes and cleanup for idle-page writeback.
1. writeback_limit interface
Now writeback_limit interface is rather conusing. For example, once
writeback limit budget is exausted, admin can see 0 from
/sys/block/zramX/writeback_limit which is same semantic with disable
writeback_limit at this moment. IOW, admin cannot tell that zero came
from disable writeback limit or exausted writeback limit.
To make the interface clear, let's sepatate enable of writeback limit to
another knob - /sys/block/zram0/writeback_limit_enable
* before:
while true :
# to re-enable writeback limit once previous one is used up
echo 0 > /sys/block/zram0/writeback_limit
echo $((200<<20)) > /sys/block/zram0/writeback_limit
..
.. # used up the writeback limit budget
* new
# To enable writeback limit, from the beginning, admin should
# enable it.
echo $((200<<20)) > /sys/block/zram0/writeback_limit
echo 1 > /sys/block/zram/0/writeback_limit_enable
while true :
echo $((200<<20)) > /sys/block/zram0/writeback_limit
..
.. # used up the writeback limit budget
It's much strightforward.
2. fix condition check idle/huge writeback mode check
The mode in writeback_store is not bit opeartion any more so no need to
use bit operations. Furthermore, current condition check is broken in
that it does writeback every pages regardless of huge/idle.
3. clean up idle_store
No need to use goto.

On the expectation that some environments may not upgrade libdaxctl
(userspace component that depends on the /sys/class/dax hierarchy),
provide a default / legacy dax_pmem_compat driver. The dax_pmem_compat
driver implements the original /sys/class/dax sysfs layout rather than
/sys/bus/dax. When userspace is upgraded it can blacklist this module
and switch to the dax_pmem driver going forward.
CONFIG_DEV_DAX_PMEM_COMPAT and supporting code will be deleted according
to the dax_pmem entry in Documentation/ABI/obsolete/.

Self cleaning is especially useful in cases where sensor undergoes
frequent power on/off cycles. In such scenarios it is recommended to
turn self cleaning at least once per week in order to maintain reliable

In this round, we've focused on bug fixes since Pixel devices have been
shipping with f2fs. Some of them were related to hardware encryption support
which are actually not an issue in mainline, but would be better to merge
them in order to avoid potential bugs.
Enhancement:
- do GC sub-sections when the section is large
- add a flag in ioctl(SHUTDOWN) to trigger fsck for QA
- use kvmalloc() in order to give another chance to avoid ENOMEM
Bug fix:
- fix accessing memory boundaries in a malformed iamge
- GC gives stale unencrypted block
- GC counts in large sections
- detect idle time more precisely
- block allocation of DIO writes
- race conditions between write_begin and write_checkpoint
- allow GCs for node segments via ioctl()
There are various clean-ups and minor bug fixes as well.

"This is the main pull request for block/storage for 4.21.
Larger than usual, it was a busy round with lots of goodies queued up.
Most notable is the removal of the old IO stack, which has been a long
time coming. No new features for a while, everything coming in this
week has all been fixes for things that were previously merged.
This contains:
- Use atomic counters instead of semaphores for mtip32xx (Arnd)
- Cleanup of the mtip32xx request setup (Christoph)
- Fix for circular locking dependency in loop (Jan, Tetsuo)
- bcache (Coly, Guoju, Shenghui)
* Optimizations for writeback caching
* Various fixes and improvements
- nvme (Chaitanya, Christoph, Sagi, Jay, me, Keith)
* host and target support for NVMe over TCP
* Error log page support
* Support for separate read/write/poll queues
* Much improved polling
* discard OOM fallback
* Tracepoint improvements
- lightnvm (Hans, Hua, Igor, Matias, Javier)
* Igor added packed metadata to pblk. Now drives without metadata
per LBA can be used as well.
* Fix from Geert on uninitialized value on chunk metadata reads.
* Fixes from Hans and Javier to pblk recovery and write path.
* Fix from Hua Su to fix a race condition in the pblk recovery
code.
* Scan optimization added to pblk recovery from Zhoujie.
* Small geometry cleanup from me.
- Conversion of the last few drivers that used the legacy path to
blk-mq (me)
- Removal of legacy IO path in SCSI (me, Christoph)
- Removal of legacy IO stack and schedulers (me)
- Support for much better polling, now without interrupts at all.
blk-mq adds support for multiple queue maps, which enables us to
have a map per type. This in turn enables nvme to have separate
completion queues for polling, which can then be interrupt-less.
Also means we're ready for async polled IO, which is hopefully
coming in the next release.
- Killing of (now) unused block exports (Christoph)
- Unification of the blk-rq-qos and blk-wbt wait handling (Josef)
- Support for zoned testing with null_blk (Masato)
- sx8 conversion to per-host tag sets (Christoph)
- IO priority improvements (Damien)
- mq-deadline zoned fix (Damien)
- Ref count blkcg series (Dennis)
- Lots of blk-mq improvements and speedups (me)
- sbitmap scalability improvements (me)
- Make core inflight IO accounting per-cpu (Mikulas)
- Export timeout setting in sysfs (Weiping)
- Cleanup the direct issue path (Jianchao)
- Export blk-wbt internals in block debugfs for easier debugging
(Ming)
- Lots of other fixes and improvements"

If there are lots of write IO with flash device, it could have a
wearout problem of storage. To overcome the problem, admin needs
to design write limitation to guarantee flash health
for entire product life.
This patch creates a new knob "writeback_limit" for zram.
writeback_limit's default value is 0 so that it doesn't limit
any writeback. If admin want to measure writeback count in a
certain period, he could know it via /sys/block/zram0/bd_stat's
3rd column.
If admin want to limit writeback as per-day 400M, he could do it
like below.
MB_SHIFT=20
4K_SHIFT=12
echo $((400<<MB_SHIFT>>4K_SHIFT)) > \
/sys/block/zram0/writeback_limit.
If admin want to allow further write again, he could do it like below
echo 0 > /sys/block/zram0/writeback_limit
If admin want to see remaining writeback budget,
cat /sys/block/zram0/writeback_limit
The writeback_limit count will reset whenever you reset zram (e.g., system
reboot, echo 1 > /sys/block/zramX/reset) so keeping how many of writeback
happened until you reset the zram to allocate extra writeback budget in
next setting is user's job.

it supports bd_counts, bd_reads and bd_writes which are helpful to
understand wearout of flash and memory saving.

Add a new feature "zram idle/huge page writeback". In the zram-swap use
case, zram usually has many idle/huge swap pages. It's pointless to keep
them in memory (ie, zram).
To solve this problem, this feature introduces idle/huge page writeback to
the backing device so the goal is to save more memory space on embedded
systems.
Normal sequence to use idle/huge page writeback feature is as follows,
while (1) {
# mark allocated zram slot to idle
echo all > /sys/block/zram0/idle
# leave system working for several hours
# Unless there is no access for some blocks on zram,
# they are still IDLE marked pages.
echo "idle" > /sys/block/zram0/writeback
or/and
echo "huge" > /sys/block/zram0/writeback
# write the IDLE or/and huge marked slot into backing device
# and free the memory.
}
Per the discussion at
https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20181122065926.GG3441@jagdpanzerIV/T/#u,
This patch removes direct incommpressibe page writeback feature
(d2afd25114f4 ("zram: write incompressible pages to backing device")).
Below concerns from Sergey:
== &< ==
"IDLE writeback" is superior to "incompressible writeback".
"incompressible writeback" is completely unpredictable and uncontrollable;
it depens on data patterns and compression algorithms. While "IDLE
writeback" is predictable.
I even suspect, that, *ideally*, we can remove "incompressible writeback".
"IDLE pages" is a super set which also includes "incompressible" pages.
So, technically, we still can do "incompressible writeback" from "IDLE
writeback" path; but a much more reasonable one, based on a page idling
period.
I understand that you want to keep "direct incompressible writeback"
around. ZRAM is especially popular on devices which do suffer from flash
wearout, so I can see "incompressible writeback" path becoming a dead
code, long term.
== &< ==
Below concerns from Minchan:
== &< ==
My concern is if we enable CONFIG_ZRAM_WRITEBACK in this implementation,
both hugepage/idlepage writeck will turn on. However someuser want to
enable only idlepage writeback so we need to introduce turn on/off knob
for hugepage or new CONFIG_ZRAM_IDLEPAGE_WRITEBACK for those usecase. I
don't want to make it complicated *if possible*.
Long term, I imagine we need to make VM aware of new swap hierarchy a
little bit different with as-is. For example, first high priority swap
can return -EIO or -ENOCOMP, swap try to fallback to next lower priority
swap device. With that, hugepage writeback will work tranparently.
So we could regard it as regression because incompressible pages doesn't
go to backing storage automatically. Instead, user should do it via "echo
huge" > /sys/block/zram/writeback" manually.

To support idle page writeback with upcoming patches, this patch
introduces a new ZRAM_IDLE flag.
Userspace can mark zram slots as "idle" via
"echo all > /sys/block/zramX/idle"
which marks every allocated zram slot as ZRAM_IDLE.
User could see it by /sys/kernel/debug/zram/zram0/block_state.
300 75.033841 ...i
301 63.806904 s..i
302 63.806919 ..hi
Once there is IO for the slot, the mark will be disappeared.
300 75.033841 ...
301 63.806904 s..i
302 63.806919 ..hi
Therefore, 300th block is idle zpage. With this feature,
user can how many zram has idle pages which are waste of memory.

Merge tag 'devprop-4.21-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rafael/linux-pm
Pull device properties framework updates from Rafael Wysocki:
"This introduces 'software nodes' that are analogous to the DT and ACPI
firmware nodes except that they can be created by drivers themselves
and do a couple of assorted cleanups.
Specifics:
- Introduce "software nodes", analogous to the DT and ACPI firmware
nodes except that they can be created by kernel code, in order to
complement fwnodes representing real firmware nodes when they are
incomplete (for example missing device properties) and to supply
the primary fwnode when the firmware lacks hardware description for
a device completely, and replace the "property_set" struct
fwnode_handle type with software nodes (Heikki Krogerus).
- Clean up the just introduced software nodes support and fix a
commet in the graph-handling code (Colin Ian King, Marco Felsch)"
* tag 'devprop-4.21-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rafael/linux-pm:
device property: fix fwnode_graph_get_next_endpoint() documentation
drivers: base: swnode: remove need for a temporary string for the node name
device property: Remove struct property_set
device property: Move device_add_properties() to swnode.c
drivers: base: Introducing software nodes to the firmware node framework
ACPI / glue: Add acpi_platform_notify() function
drivers core: Prepare support for multiple platform notifications
driver core: platform: Remove duplicated device_remove_properties() call
- Add sysadmin documentation for cpuidle (Rafael Wysocki).
- Make it possible to specify a cpuidle governor from kernel
command line, add new cpuidle state sysfs attributes for
governor evaluation, and improve the "polling" idle state
handling (Rafael Wysocki).
- Fix the handling of the "required-opps" DT property in the
operating performance points (OPP) framework, improve the
integration of it with the generic power domains (genpd)
framework, improve the handling of performance states in
them and clean up the idle states vs performance states
separation in genpd (Viresh Kumar, Ulf Hansson).
- Add a cpufreq driver called "qcom-hw" for Qualcomm SoCs using
a hardware engine to control CPU frequency transitions along
with DT bindings for it (Taniya Das).
- Fix an intel_pstate driver issue related to CPU offline and
update the documentation of it (Srinivas Pandruvada).
- Clean up the imx6q cpufreq driver (Anson Huang).
- Add SPDX license IDs to cpufreq schedutil governor files (Daniel
Lezcano).
- Switch over the runtime PM framework to using high-res timers
for device autosuspend to allow the control of it to be more
precise (Vincent Guittot).
- Disable non-wakeup ACPI GPEs during suspend-to-idle so that they
don't prevent the system from reaching the target low-power state
and simplify the suspend-to-idle handling on ACPI platforms
without full Low-Power S0 Idle (LPS0) support (Rafael Wysocki).
- Add system-wide suspend and resume support to the devfreq
framework (Lukasz Luba).
- Clean up the SmartReflex adaptive voltage scaling (AVS) driver and
add an SPDX license ID to it (Nishanth Menon, Uwe Kleine-König,
Thomas Meyer).
- Get rid of code duplication by using the DEFINE_SHOW_ATTRIBUTE
macro in some places, fix some DT node refcount leaks, and do
some other janitorial cleanups (Yangtao Li).
- Update the cpupower, intel_pstate_tracer and turbosat utilities
(Abhishek Goel, Doug Smythies, Len Brown).

Measuring particulate matter in ug / m3 (micro-grams per cubic meter)
is de facto standard. Existing air quality sensors usually follow
this convention and are capable of returning measurements using
this unit.
IIO currently does not offer suitable channel type for this
type of measurements hence this patch adds this.
In addition, extra modifiers are introduced used for distinguishing
between fine pm1, pm2p5 and coarse pm4, pm10 particle measurements, i.e
IIO_MOD_PM1, IIO_MOD_PM25 and IIO_MOD_PM4, IIO_MOD_PM10.

thunderbolt: Export IOMMU based DMA protection support to userspace
iommu/vt-d: Do not enable ATS for untrusted devices
iommu/vt-d: Force IOMMU on for platform opt in hint
PCI / ACPI: Identify untrusted PCI devices
Recent systems with Thunderbolt ports may support IOMMU natively. In
practice this means that Thunderbolt connected devices are placed behind
an IOMMU during the whole time it is connected (including during boot)
making Thunderbolt security levels redundant. This is called Kernel DMA
protection [1] by Microsoft.
Some of these systems still have Thunderbolt security level set to
"user" in order to support OS downgrade (the older version of the OS
might not support IOMMU based DMA protection so connecting a device
still relies on user approval).
Export this information to userspace by introducing a new sysfs
attribute (iommu_dma_protection). Based on it userspace tools can make
more accurate decision whether or not authorize the connected device.
In addition update Thunderbolt documentation regarding IOMMU based DMA
protection.

Add one sysfs entry to control migration granularity of GC in large
section f2fs, it can be tuned to mitigate heavy overhead of migrating
huge number of blocks in large section.

Software node is a new struct fwnode_handle type that can be
used to describe devices in kernel (software). It is meant
to complement fwnodes representing real firmware nodes when
they are incomplete (for example missing device properties)
and to supply the primary fwnode when the firmware lacks
hardware description for a device completely.
The software node type is really meant to replace the
currently used "property_set" struct fwnode_handle type. The
handling of struct property_set is glued to the generic
device property handling code, and it is not possible to
create a struct property_set independently from the device
that it is bind to. struct property_set is only created when
device properties are added to already initialized struct
device, and control of it is only possible from the generic
property handling code.
Software nodes are instead designed to be created
independently from the device entries (struct device). It
makes them much more flexible, as then the device meant to
be bind to the node can be created at a later time, and from
another location. It is also possible to bind multiple
devices to a single software node if needed.
The software node implementation also includes support for
node hierarchy, which was the main motivation for this
commit. The node hierarchy was something that was requested
for the struct property_set, but it did not seem reasonable
to try to extend the property_set support for that purpose.
struct property_set was really meant only for device
property handling like the name suggests.
Support for struct property_set is not yet removed in this
commit, but it will be in the following one.

Pull LED fixes from Jacek Anaszewski:
"All three fixes are related to the newly added pattern trigger:
- remove mutex_lock() from timer callback, which would trigger
problems related to sleeping in atomic context, the removal is
harmless since mutex protection turned out to be redundant in this
case
- fix pattern parsing to properly handle intervals with brightness == 0
- fix typos in the ABI documentation"

Here is the big staging and IIO driver pull request for 4.20-rc1.
There are lots of things here, we ended up adding more lines than
removing, thanks to a large influx of Comedi National Instrument device
support. Someday soon we need to get comedi out of staging...
Other than the comedi drivers, the "big" things here are:
- new iio drivers
- delete dgnc driver (no one used it and no one had the hardware
anymore)
- vbox driver updates and fixes
- erofs fixes
- tons and tons of tiny checkpatch fixes for almost all staging
drivers
All of these have been in linux-next, with the last few happening a bit
"late" due to them getting stuck on my laptop during travel to the
Mantainers summit.
When merging with your tree, there will be 2 merge conflicts, both files
will be simple to resolve, just delete them :)
