License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no license Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. Disable this option to remove the block layer support from the
kernel. This may be useful for embedded devices.
If this option is disabled:
- block device files will become unusable
- some filesystems (such as ext3) will become unavailable.
Also, SCSI character devices and USB storage will be disabled since
they make use of various block layer definitions and facilities.

block: hook up writeback throttling Enable throttling of buffered writeback to make it a lot more smooth, and has way less impact on other system activity. Background writeback should be, by definition, background activity. The fact that we flush huge bundles of it at the time means that it potentially has heavy impacts on foreground workloads, which isn't ideal. We can't easily limit the sizes of writes that we do, since that would impact file system layout in the presence of delayed allocation. So just throttle back buffered writeback, unless someone is waiting for it. The algorithm for when to throttle takes its inspiration in the CoDel networking scheduling algorithm. Like CoDel, blk-wb monitors the minimum latencies of requests over a window of time. In that window of time, if the minimum latency of any request exceeds a given target, then a scale count is incremented and the queue depth is shrunk. The next monitoring window is shrunk accordingly. Unlike CoDel, if we hit a window that exhibits good behavior, then we simply increment the scale count and re-calculate the limits for that scale value. This prevents us from oscillating between a close-to-ideal value and max all the time, instead remaining in the windows where we get good behavior. Unlike CoDel, blk-wb allows the scale count to to negative. This happens if we primarily have writes going on. Unlike positive scale counts, this doesn't change the size of the monitoring window. When the heavy writers finish, blk-bw quickly snaps back to it's stable state of a zero scale count. The patch registers a sysfs entry, 'wb_lat_usec'. This sets the latency target to me met. It defaults to 2 msec for non-rotational storage, and 75 msec for rotational storage. Setting this value to '0' disables blk-wb. Generally, a user would not have to touch this setting. We don't enable WBT on devices that are managed with CFQ, and have a non-root block cgroup attached. If we have a proportional share setup on this particular disk, then the wbt throttling will interfere with that. Enabling this option enables the block layer to throttle buffered
background writeback from the VM, making it more smooth and having
less impact on foreground operations. The throttling is done
dynamically on an algorithm loosely based on CoDel, factoring in
the realtime performance of the disk.
block: introduce blk-iolatency io controller Current IO controllers for the block layer are less than ideal for our use case. The io.max controller is great at hard limiting, but it is not work conserving. This patch introduces io.latency. You provide a latency target for your group and we monitor the io in short windows to make sure we are not exceeding those latency targets. This makes use of the rq-qos infrastructure and works much like the wbt stuff. There are a few differences from wbt - It's bio based, so the latency covers the whole block layer in addition to the actual io. - We will throttle all IO types that comes in here if we need to. - We use the mean latency over the 100ms window. This is because writes can be particularly fast, which could give us a false sense of the impact of other workloads on our protected workload. - By default there's no throttling, we set the queue_depth to INT_MAX so that we can have as many outstanding bio's as we're allowed to. Only at throttle time do we pay attention to the actual queue depth. - We backcharge cgroups for root cg issued IO and induce artificial delays in order to deal with cases like metadata only or swap heavy workloads. In testing this has worked out relatively well. Protected workloads will throttle noisy workloads down to 1 io at time if they are doing normal IO on their own, or induce up to a 1 second delay per syscall if they are doing a lot of root issued IO (metadata/swap IO). Our testing has revolved mostly around our production web servers where we have hhvm (the web server application) in a protected group and everything else in another group. We see slightly higher requests per second (RPS) on the test tier vs the control tier, and much more stable RPS across all machines in the test tier vs the control tier. Another test we run is a slow memory allocator in the unprotected group. Before this would eventually push us into swap and cause the whole box to die and not recover at all. With these patches we see slight RPS drops (usually 10-15%) before the memory consumer is properly killed and things recover within seconds. Enabling this option enables the .latency interface for IO throttling.
The IO controller will attempt to maintain average IO latencies below
the configured latency target, throttling anybody with a higher latency
target than the victimized group.
Note, this is an experimental interface and could be changed someday.

model based proportional IO control. The IO controller
distributes IO capacity between different groups based on
their share of the overall weight distribution.
block: hook up writeback throttling Enable throttling of buffered writeback to make it a lot more smooth, and has way less impact on other system activity. Background writeback should be, by definition, background activity. The fact that we flush huge bundles of it at the time means that it potentially has heavy impacts on foreground workloads, which isn't ideal. We can't easily limit the sizes of writes that we do, since that would impact file system layout in the presence of delayed allocation. So just throttle back buffered writeback, unless someone is waiting for it. The algorithm for when to throttle takes its inspiration in the CoDel networking scheduling algorithm. Like CoDel, blk-wb monitors the minimum latencies of requests over a window of time. In that window of time, if the minimum latency of any request exceeds a given target, then a scale count is incremented and the queue depth is shrunk. The next monitoring window is shrunk accordingly. Unlike CoDel, if we hit a window that exhibits good behavior, then we simply increment the scale count and re-calculate the limits for that scale value. This prevents us from oscillating between a close-to-ideal value and max all the time, instead remaining in the windows where we get good behavior. Unlike CoDel, blk-wb allows the scale count to to negative. This happens if we primarily have writes going on. Unlike positive scale counts, this doesn't change the size of the monitoring window. When the heavy writers finish, blk-bw quickly snaps back to it's stable state of a zero scale count. The patch registers a sysfs entry, 'wb_lat_usec'. This sets the latency target to me met. It defaults to 2 msec for non-rotational storage, and 75 msec for rotational storage. Setting this value to '0' disables blk-wb. Generally, a user would not have to touch this setting. We don't enable WBT on devices that are managed with CFQ, and have a non-root block cgroup attached. If we have a proportional share setup on this particular disk, then the wbt throttling will interfere with that. block: Keyslot Manager for Inline Encryption Inline Encryption hardware allows software to specify an encryption context (an encryption key, crypto algorithm, data unit num, data unit size) along with a data transfer request to a storage device, and the inline encryption hardware will use that context to en/decrypt the data. The inline encryption hardware is part of the storage device, and it conceptually sits on the data path between system memory and the storage device. Inline Encryption hardware implementations often function around the concept of "keyslots". These implementations often have a limited number of "keyslots", each of which can hold a key (we say that a key can be "programmed" into a keyslot). Requests made to the storage device may have a keyslot and a data unit number associated with them, and the inline encryption hardware will en/decrypt the data in the requests using the key programmed into that associated keyslot and the data unit number specified with the request. As keyslots are limited, and programming keys may be expensive in many implementations, and multiple requests may use exactly the same encryption contexts, we introduce a Keyslot Manager to efficiently manage keyslots. We also introduce a blk_crypto_key, which will represent the key that's programmed into keyslots managed by keyslot managers. The keyslot manager also functions as the interface that upper layers will use to program keys into inline encryption hardware.
