Import win32 keyboard hooking code from project spice-gtk. This
patch removes the extra left control key up/down input events
inserted by Windows for the right alt key up/down input events
with international keyboard layouts. Additionally there's some
code to grab the keyboard.
The next patches will use this code.
Only Windows needs this.

The only way object_property_add() can fail is when a property with
the same name already exists. Since our property names are all
hardcoded, failure is a programming error, and the appropriate way to
handle it is passing &error_abort.
Same for its variants, except for object_property_add_child(), which
additionally fails when the child already has a parent. Parentage is
also under program control, so this is a programming error, too.
We have a bit over 500 callers. Almost half of them pass
&error_abort, slightly fewer ignore errors, one test case handles
errors, and the remaining few callers pass them to their own callers.
The previous few commits demonstrated once again that ignoring
programming errors is a bad idea.
Of the few ones that pass on errors, several violate the Error API.
The Error ** argument must be NULL, &error_abort, &error_fatal, or a
pointer to a variable containing NULL. Passing an argument of the
latter kind twice without clearing it in between is wrong: if the
first call sets an error, it no longer points to NULL for the second
call. ich9_pm_add_properties(), sparc32_ledma_realize(),
sparc32_dma_realize(), xilinx_axidma_realize(), xilinx_enet_realize()
are wrong that way.
When the one appropriate choice of argument is &error_abort, letting
users pick the argument is a bad idea.
Drop parameter @errp and assert the preconditions instead.
There's one exception to "duplicate property name is a programming
error": the way object_property_add() implements the magic (and
undocumented) "automatic arrayification". Don't drop @errp there.
Instead, rename object_property_add() to object_property_try_add(),
and add the obvious wrapper object_property_add().

Traditionally, the uint-specific property helpers only offer getters.
When adding object (or class) uint types, one must therefore use the
generic property helper if a setter is needed (and probably duplicate
some code writing their own getters/setters).
This enhances the uint-specific property helper APIs by adding a
bitwise-or'd 'flags' field and modifying all clients of that API to set
this paramater to OBJ_PROP_FLAG_READ. This maintains the current
behaviour whilst allowing others to also set OBJ_PROP_FLAG_WRITE (or use
the more convenient OBJ_PROP_FLAG_READWRITE) in the future (which will
automatically install a setter). Other flags may be added later.

Our official OSX support policy covers the last two released versions.
Currently that is 10.14 and 10.15. We also may work on older versions, but
don't guarantee it.
In commit 50290c002c in mid-2019 we introduced some uses of
CLOCK_MONOTONIC which incidentally broke compilation for pre-10.12 OSX
versions (see LP:1861551). We don't intend to fix that, so we might
as well drop the code in ui/cocoa.m which caters for pre-10.12
versions as well. (For reference, 10.11 fell out of Apple extended
security support in September 2018.)

Commit c388f408b5 added the possibility to list the display
backends using '-display help'. Since the 'none' backend is
is not implemented as a DisplayChangeListenerOps, it is not
registered to the dpys[] array with qemu_display_register(),
and is not listed in the help output.
This might be confusing, as we list it in the man page:
-display type
Select type of display to use. This option is a replacement for
the old style -sdl/-curses/... options. Valid values for type are
none
Do not display video output. The guest will still see an
emulated graphics card, but its output will not be displayed
to the QEMU user. This option differs from the -nographic
option in that it only affects what is done with video
output; -nographic also changes the destination of the serial
and parallel port data.
Fix by manually listing the special 'none' backend in the help.

In my investigation, ZRLE always compresses better than ZLIB so
prioritize ZRLE over ZLIB, even if the client hints that ZLIB is
preferred.

This reverts commit de3f7de7f4.
Remove VNC optimization to reencode framebuffer update as raw if it's
smaller than the default encoding.
QEMU's implementation was naive and didn't account for the ZLIB z_stream
mutating with each compression. Because of the mutation, simply
resetting the output buffer's offset wasn't sufficient to "rewind" the
operation. The mutated z_stream would generate future zlib blocks which
referred to symbols in past blocks which weren't sent. This would lead
to artifacting.
Considering that ZRLE is never larger than raw and even though ZLIB can
occasionally be fractionally larger than raw, the overhead of
implementing this optimization correctly isn't worth it.

Because some VMs in QEMU can get GPU virtualization (using technologies
such as iGVT-g, as mentioned previously), they could produce a video
output that had a higher display refresh rate than of what the GTK
display was displaying. (fxp. Playing a video game inside of a Windows
VM at 60 Hz, while the output stood locked at 33 Hz because of defaults
set in include/ui/console.h)
Since QEMU does indeed have internal systems for determining frame
times as defined in ui/console.c.
The code checks for a variable called update_interval that it later
uses for time calculation. This variable, however, isn't defined
anywhere in ui/gtk.c and instead ui/console.c just sets it to
GUI_REFRESH_INTERVAL_DEFAULT which is 30
update_interval represents the number of milliseconds per display
refresh, and by doing some math we get that 1000/30 = 33.33... Hz
This creates the mentioned problem and what this patch does is that it
checks for the display refresh rate reported by GTK itself (we can take
this as a safe value) and just converts it back to a number of
milliseconds per display refresh.

If we try to start QEMU with "-k en-us", qemu prints a message and exits
with:
qemu-system-i386: could not read keymap file: 'en-us'
It's because this function is called way too early, before
qemu_add_data_dir() is called, and so qemu_find_file() fails.
To fix that, move init_keyboard_layout() from the class init function to the
instance init function.

The current code does not correctly pass the color pair information to
setcchar(), it instead always passes zero. This results in the curses
output always being in white on black.
This patch fixes this by using PAIR_NUMBER() to retrieve the color pair
number from the chtype value, and then passes that value as an argument
to setcchar().

macOS API documentation says that before applicationDidFinishLaunching

fired before it is called in macOS Catalina. This causes deadlock of
iothread_lock in handleEvent while it will be released after the

This patch avoids processing events before the app_started_sem is

Currently when qemu receives a vnc connect, it creates a 'VncState' to
represent this connection. In 'vnc_worker_thread_loop' it creates a
local 'VncState'. The connection 'VcnState' and local 'VncState' exchange
data in 'vnc_async_encoding_start' and 'vnc_async_encoding_end'.
In 'zrle_compress_data' it calls 'deflateInit2' to allocate the libz library
opaque data. The 'VncState' used in 'zrle_compress_data' is the local
'VncState'. In 'vnc_zrle_clear' it calls 'deflateEnd' to free the libz
library opaque data. The 'VncState' used in 'vnc_zrle_clear' is the connection
'VncState'. In currently implementation there will be a memory leak when the
vnc disconnect. Following is the asan output backtrack:
Direct leak of 29760 byte(s) in 5 object(s) allocated from:
0 0xffffa67ef3c3 in __interceptor_calloc (/lib64/libasan.so.4+0xd33c3)
1 0xffffa65071cb in g_malloc0 (/lib64/libglib-2.0.so.0+0x571cb)
2 0xffffa5e968f7 in deflateInit2_ (/lib64/libz.so.1+0x78f7)

10 0xffffa53965cb in thread_start (/lib64/libc.so.6+0xd55cb)
This is because the opaque allocated in 'deflateInit2' is not freed in
'deflateEnd'. The reason is that the 'deflateEnd' calls 'deflateStateCheck'
and in the latter will check whether 's->strm != strm'(libz's data structure).
This check will be true so in 'deflateEnd' it just return 'Z_STREAM_ERROR' and
not free the data allocated in 'deflateInit2'.
The reason this happens is that the 'VncState' contains the whole 'VncZrle',
so when calling 'deflateInit2', the 's->strm' will be the local address.
So 's->strm != strm' will be true.
To fix this issue, we need to make 'zrle' of 'VncState' to be a pointer.
Then the connection 'VncState' and local 'VncState' exchange mechanism will
work as expection. The 'tight' of 'VncState' has the same issue, let's also turn
it to a pointer.

This allows to receive mouse and keyboard events from
a Barrier server.
This is enabled by adding the following parameter on the
command line
... -object input-barrier,id=$id,name=$name ...
Where $name is the name declared in the screens section of barrier.conf
The barrier server (barriers) must be configured and must run on the
local host.
For instance:
section: screens
localhost:
...
VM-1:
...
end
section: links
localhost:
right = VM-1
VM-1:
left = localhost
end
Then on the QEMU command line:
... -object input-barrier,id=barrie0,name=VM-1 ...
When the mouse will move out of the screen of the local host on
the right, the mouse and the keyboard will be grabbed and all
related events will be send to the guest OS.
This is usefull when qemu is configured without emulated graphic card
but with a VFIO attached graphic card.
More information about Barrier can be found at:

for instance when it is not supported or during the installation.

sysemu/sysemu.h is a rather unfocused dumping ground for stuff related
to the system-emulator. Evidence:
* It's included widely: in my "build everything" tree, changing
sysemu/sysemu.h still triggers a recompile of some 1100 out of 6600
objects (not counting tests and objects that don't depend on
qemu/osdep.h, down from 5400 due to the previous two commits).
* It pulls in more than a dozen additional headers.
Split stuff related to run state management into its own header
sysemu/runstate.h.
Touching sysemu/sysemu.h now recompiles some 850 objects. qemu/uuid.h
also drops from 1100 to 850, and qapi/qapi-types-run-state.h from 4400
to 4200. Touching new sysemu/runstate.h recompiles some 500 objects.

docs/devel/tracing.txt explains "since many source files include
trace.h, [the generated trace.h use] a minimum of types and other
header files included to keep the namespace clean and compile times
and dependencies down."
Commit 4815185902 "trace: Add per-vCPU tracing states for events with
the 'vcpu' property" made them all include qom/cpu.h via
control-internal.h. qom/cpu.h in turn includes about thirty headers.
Ouch.
Per-vCPU tracing is currently not supported in sub-directories'
trace-events. In other words, qom/cpu.h can only be used in
trace-root.h, not in any trace.h.
Split trace/control-vcpu.h off trace/control.h and
trace/control-internal.h. Have the generated trace.h include
trace/control.h (which no longer includes qom/cpu.h), and trace-root.h
include trace/control-vcpu.h (which includes it).
The resulting improvement is a bit disappointing: in my "build
everything" tree, some 1100 out of 6600 objects (not counting tests
and objects that don't depend on qemu/osdep.h) depend on a trace.h,
and about 600 of them no longer depend on qom/cpu.h. But more than
1300 others depend on trace-root.h. More work is clearly needed.

Impact is negligible except for hw/qdev-properties.h.
This header includes qapi/qapi-types-block.h and

definition macros such as DEFINE_PROP_BLOCKDEV_ON_ERROR() and
DEFINE_PROP_OFF_AUTO(). Moving their inclusion from
hw/qdev-properties.h to the users of these macros avoids pointless
recompiles. This is how other property definition macros, such as

Improves things for some of the top scorers:

Linux terminal behavior (coming from vt100 I think) is somewhat strange
when it comes to line wraps: When a character is printed to the last
char cell of a line the cursor does NOT jump to the next line but stays
where it is. The line feed happens when the next character is printed.
So the valid range for the cursor position is not 0 .. width-1 but
0 .. width, where x == width represents the state where the line is
full but the cursor didn't jump to the next line yet.
The code for the 'clear from start of line' control sequence (ESC[1K)
fails to handle this corner case correctly and may call
console_clear_xy() with x == width. That will incorrectly clear the
first char cell of the next line, or in case the cursor happens to be on
the last line overflow the cell buffer by one character (three bytes).
Add a check to the loop to fix that.
Didn't spot any other places with the same problem. But it's easy to
miss that corner case, so also allocate one extra cell as precaution, so
in case we have simliar issues lurking elsewhere it at least wouldn't be
a buffer overflow.

On Mojave, absolute input device, i.e. tablet, had trouble re-grabbing
the cursor in re-entry into the virtual screen area. In some cases,
the `window` property of NSEvent object was nil after cursor exiting from
window, hinting that the `-locationInWindow` method would return value in
screen coordinates. The current implementation used raw locations from
NSEvent without considering whether the value was for the window coordinates
or the macOS screen coordinates, nor the zooming factor for Zoom-to-Fit in
fullscreen mode.
In fullscreen mode, the fullscreen cocoa window might not be the key
window, therefore the location of event in virtual coordinates should
suffice.
This patches fixed boundary check methods for cursor in normal

unicode, and makes use of cchar_t instead of chtype when using ncursesw,
which allows to store all wide char as well as the WACS values. The default

The VNC server has historically had support for ACLs to check both the
SASL username and the TLS x509 distinguished name. The VNC server was
responsible for creating the initial ACL, and the client app was then
responsible for populating it with rules using the HMP 'acl_add' command.
This is not satisfactory for a variety of reasons. There is no way to
populate the ACLs from the command line, users are forced to use the
HMP. With multiple network services all supporting TLS and ACLs now, it
is desirable to be able to define a single ACL that is referenced by all
services.
To address these limitations, two new options are added to the VNC
server CLI. The 'tls-authz' option takes the ID of a QAuthZ object to
use for checking TLS x509 distinguished names, and the 'sasl-authz'
option takes the ID of another object to use for checking SASL usernames.
In this example, we setup two authorization rules. The first allows any
client with a certificate issued by the 'RedHat' organization in the
'London' locality. The second ACL allows clients with either the
'joe@REDHAT.COM' or 'fred@REDHAT.COM' kerberos usernames. Both checks
must pass for the user to be allowed.

vnc aborts display update jobs on video mode switches and page flips.
That can cause vnc update stalls in case an unfinished vnc job gets
aborted. The vnc client will never receive the requested update then.
Fix that by copying the state from job_update back to update in that
case.
Reports complain about stalls with two or more clients being connected
at the same time, on some but not all connections. I suspect it can
also happen with a single connection, multiple connections only make
this more much likely to happen.

This makes use of wide curses functions instead of 8bit functions. This
allows to type e.g. accented letters.
Unfortunately, key codes are then returned with values that could be
confused with wide characters by ncurses, so we need to add a maybe_keycode
variable to know whether the returned value is a key code or a character
(curses with wide support), or possibly both (curses without wide support).
The translation tables thus also need to be separated into key code
translation and character translation. The curses2foo helper makes it easier
to use them.

The OSX Mojave release is more picky about enforcing the Cocoa API
restriction that only the main thread may perform UI calls. To
accommodate this we need to restructure the Cocoa code:
* the special OSX main() creates a second thread and uses
that to call the vl.c qemu_main(); the original main
thread goes into the OSX event loop
* the refresh, switch and update callbacks asynchronously
tell the main thread to do the necessary work
* the refresh callback no longer does the "get events from the
UI event queue and handle them" loop, since we now use
the stock OSX event loop. Instead our NSApplication sendEvent
method will either deal with them or pass them on to OSX
All these things have to be changed in one commit, to avoid
breaking bisection.
Note that since we use dispatch_get_main_queue(), this bumps
our minimum version requirement to OSX 10.10 Yosemite (released
in 2014, unsupported by Apple since 2017).

be able to have first go at any events our application receives,
because in full-screen mode we want to send key events to the guest,
even if they would be menu item activation events. There are several
ways we could do that, but one simple approach is to subclass
NSApplication so we can implement a custom sendEvent method.
Do that, but for the moment have our sendEvent just invoke the

Currently the switchSurface method takes a DisplaySurface. We want
to change our DisplayChangeListener's dpy_gfx_switch callback
to do this work asynchronously on a different thread. The caller
of the switch callback will free the old DisplaySurface
immediately the callback returns, so to ensure that the
other thread doesn't access freed data we need to switch
to using the underlying pixman image instead. The pixman
image is reference counted, so we will be able to take
a reference to it to avoid it vanishing too early.
In this commit we only change the switchSurface method
to take a pixman image, and keep the flow of control

The 'qemu_acl' type was a previous non-QOM based attempt to provide an
authorization facility in QEMU. Because it is non-QOM based it cannot be
created via the command line and requires special monitor commands to
manipulate it.
The new QAuthZ subclasses provide a superset of the functionality in
qemu_acl, so the latter can now be deleted. The HMP 'acl_*' monitor

Add a new display backend that will configure Spice to allow a remote
client to control QEMU in a similar fashion as other QEMU display

For this to work, it will set up Spice server with a unix socket, and
register a VC chardev that will be exposed as Spice ports. A QMP
monitor is also exposed as a Spice port, this allows the remote client
fuller qemu control and state handling.
- doesn't handle VC set_echo() - this doesn't seem a strong
requirement, very few front-end use it
- spice options can be tweaked with other -spice arguments
- Windows support shouldn't be hard to do, but will probably use a TCP
port instead
- we may want to watch the child process to quit automatically if it

Passing several -spice options to qemu command line, or calling
several time qemu_opts_set() will ignore all but the first option
list. Since the spice server is a singleton, it makes sense to merge
all the options, the last value being the one taken into account.
This changes the behaviour from, for ex:
$ qemu... -spice port=5900 -spice port=5901 -> port: 5900
to:
$ qemu... -spice port=5900 -spice port=5901 -> port: 5901

given twice, although this makes handling default values and such more
complicated)

aborts with:
(process:6191): Spice-ERROR **: 19:29:35.912: red-worker.c:623:handle_dev_start: assertion `!worker->running' failed
It's easy to avoid that situation since qemu spice_display_is_running
tracks the server state.
After the commit "spice: do not stop spice if VM is paused", it will
be possible to pause and resume the VM, and this will call
qemu_spice_display_start() twice. The easiest is to add a check for
spice_display_is_running with this patch to avoid the assert.

The license information in this file is very messy. A short note at
the beginning says GPL first, but the long boilerplate code then
talks about "GNU Lesser General Public License version 2.0". First,
there is no such version of the "GNU Lesser GPL", it only started with
version 2.1. In version 2.0, it was still called "GNU Library GPL"
instead. Second, you can easily get the license of this file wrong
if you only quickly glance at the long boilerplate code.
Anyway, looking at the text of the LGPL (see COPYING.LIB in the top
directory), the license clearly states in section "3." that one should
rather replace the license information with the GPL information in
such a case of a mixture instead. Thus let's clean up the confusing
statements and use the proper GPL text only.

modifier state on keydown. In that case the keycode lookup can end up
with different keys in case multiple keysym -> keycode mappings exist,
because it picks the mapping depending on modifier state.

looking at the modifier state check the key state and prefer a keycodes

This patch adds helper code to track the state of all keyboard keys,
using a bitmap indexed by QKeyCode. Modifier state is tracked too,
as separate bitmap. That makes checking modifier state easier.
Likewise we can easily apply special handling for capslock & numlock
(toggles on keypress) and ctrl + shift (we have two keys for that).

ui: deprecate use of SDL 1.2 in favour of 2.0 series
The SDL 2.0 release was made in Aug, 2013:
https://www.libsdl.org/release/
That will soon be 4 + 1/2 years ago, which is enough time to consider
the 2.0 series widely supported.
Thus we deprecate the SDL 1.2 support, which will allow us to delete it
in the last release of 2018. By this time, SDL 2.0 will be more than 5

This patch adds a new option to the input-linux object:
grab-toggle=[key-combo]
The key combination can be one of the following:
* ctrl-ctrl
* alt-alt
* meta-meta
* scrolllock
* ctrl-scrolllock
The user can pick any of these key combinations. The VM's grab
of the evdev device will be toggled when the key combination is
pressed.
Any invalid setting will result in an error. No setting will
result in the current default of ctrl-ctrl.
The right and left ctrl key both work for Ctrl-Scrolllock.
If scrolllock is selected as one of the grab-toggle keys, it
will be entirely disabled and not passed to the guest at all.
This is to prevent enabling it while attempting to leave or enter
the VM. On the host, scrolllock can be disabled using xmodmap.
First, find the modifier that Scroll_Lock is bound to:
$ xmodmap -pm
Then, remove Scroll_Lock from it, replacing modX with the modifier:
$ xmodmap -e 'remove modX = Scroll_Lock'
If Scroll_Lock is not bound to any modifier, it is already disabled.
To save the changes, add them to your xinitrc.

Modern desktop environments can render icons at very large sizes,
especially with high DPI screens. Providing a 32x32 pixel bitmap is
nowhere near sufficient anymore.
When displayed in GNOME shell the QEMU icon looks awful, having been
scaled up to at least x4 its base size. This is compounded by the fact
that the BMP file doesn't do transparency, so while we've removed white
pixels, we still have anti-aliased nearly-white pixels which make the
logo look appalling on black backgrounds.
Loading a high resolution PNG icon addresses both problems, but requires
use of the extra SDL2_image library.

The icon associated with a GtkWindow is just a hint to window managers
and not all of them will honour it. Some will instead want to show the
icon listed by the .desktop file. The desktop file is located based on
the application ID, which is set using g_set_prgname. QEMU has not
historically provided a desktop file or set its app ID, so it got a
broken icon in GNOME shell, which is now fixed.

QEMU currently installs logos to $prefix/share/qemu/ which means no GUI
toolkit or applications can find them by default.
The accepted standards for desktop applications declare that application
logos / icons should be installed under $prefix/share/icons, so use this
directory location.
Pre-rendered icons are provided at the standard sizes expected for GUI
applications, along with the scalable SVG, to ensure maximum portability.
The PNGs are rendered from the SVG using inkscape, however, this is not
wired up into the default make rules to avoid requiring inkscape as a
mandatory tool in build systems / developer workstations.

This will be needed when we change the QTAILQ head and elem structs
to unions. However, it is also consistent with the usage elsewhere
in QEMU for other list head structs (see for example FsMountList).
Note that most QTAILQs only need their name in order to do backwards
walks. Those do not break with the struct->union change, and anyway
the change will also remove the need to name heads when doing backwards
walks, so those are not touched here.

Looking at chardev/spice.c code, I realize compilation was broken for
a while with spice-server < 0.12.3. Let's bump required version
to 0.12.5, released May 19 2014, instead of adding more #ifdef.
(this patch combines changes from an early version and some of
Frediano "[PATCH 2/2] spice: Bump required spice-server version to
0.12.6")
According to repology, all the distros that are build target platforms
for QEMU include it:
RHEL-7: 0.14.0
Debian (Stretch): 0.12.8
Debian (Jessie): 0.12.5
FreeBSD (ports): 0.14.0
OpenSUSE Leap 15: 0.14.0
Ubuntu (Xenial): 0.12.6
Note that a previous version of this patch was bumping version to
0.12.6. Unfortunately, Debian Jessie (oldstable) is stuck with spice
server 0.12.5, and QEMU should keep building until after 2y of current
stable (Stretch), which will be around June 17th 2019. Qemu 4.1
should thus be free of bumping to spice-server 0.12.6 during 4.1
development cycle.

Future spice-server versions will call the client_monitors_config
callback with the monitors list filtered to only include the monitors
of the given display channel (aka QXLInstance). Luckily this is easily
detectable at runtime, so we can prepare for that in advance and also
make qemu compatible with both old and new spice-server versions.
While being at it also use the console index instead of head number as
array index. The later doesn't work correctly in case multiple display
devices are present.

That patch series introduced new virtual clock type for use in external
subsystems. It breaks desired behavior in non-record/replay usage
scenarios due to a small change to existing behavior. Processing of
virtual timers belonging to new clock type is kicked off to the main
loop, which makes these timers asynchronous with vCPU thread and,
in icount mode, with whole guest execution. This breaks expected
determinism in non-record/replay icount mode of emulation where these
"external subsystems" are isolated from the host (i.e. they are
external only to guest core, not to the entire emulation environment).
Example for slirp ("user" backend for network device):
User runs qemu in icount mode with rtc clock=vm without any external
communication interfaces but with "-netdev user,restrict=on". It expects
deterministic execution, because network services are emulated inside
qemu and isolated from host. There are no reasons to get reply from DHCP
server with different delay or something like that.
The next patches revert reimplements the same changes in a better way.

ui: deprecate use of GTK 2.x in favour of 3.x series
The GTK 3.0 release was made in Feb, 2011:
https://blog.gtk.org/2011/02/10/gtk-3-0-released/
That will soon be 7 years ago, which is enough time to consider
the 3.x series widely supported.
Thus we deprecate the GTK 2.x support, which will allow us to
delete it in the last release of 2018. By this time, GTK 3.x
will be almost 8 years old.

UI uses timers based on virtual clock for managing key queue.
This is incorrect because this service is not related to the guest state,
and its events should not be recorded and replayed. But these timers should
stop when the guest is not executing.
This patch changes using virtual clock to the new virtual_ext clock,
which runs as virtual clock, but its timers are not saved to the log.

This may create undesirable warnings like "Could not find keytab file:

Instead, only initialize SASL when needed. Note that HMP/QMP "change

Monochrome cursors are still used by Windows guests with the
QXL-WDDM-DOD driver. Such cursor types have one odd feature, inversion
of colors. GDK does not seem to support it, so implement an alternative
solution: fill the inverted pixels and add an outline to make the cursor
more visible. Tested with the text cursor in Notepad and Windows 10.
cursor_set_mono is also used by the vmware GPU, so add a special check
to avoid breaking its 32bpp format (tested with Kubuntu 14.04.4). I was
unable to find a guest which supports the 1bpp format with a vmware GPU.
The old implementation was buggy and removed in v2.10.0-108-g79c5a10cdd
("qxl: drop mono cursor support"), this version improves upon that by
adding bounds validation, clarifying the semantics of the two masks and
adds a workaround for inverted colors support.

The generated qapi_event_send_FOO() take an Error ** argument. They
can't actually fail, because all they do with the argument is passing it

Drop the argument, and pass &error_abort to the QObject output visitor

spice-display should not call the ui/console.c functions dpy_cursor_define
and dpy_moues_set with the SimpleSpiceDisplay lock taken. That will cause
a deadlock, because the DisplayChangeListener callbacks will take the lock
again. It is also in general a bad idea to invoke generic callbacks with a
lock taken, because it can cause AB-BA deadlocks in the long run. The only
thing that requires care is that the cursor may disappear as soon as the
mutex is released, so you need an extra cursor_get/cursor_put pair.

When the user pushes Command-F in QEMU while the mouse is ungrabbed, QEMU
goes into full screen mode. When the user finally releases the command key,
it is sent to the guest as an event. The makes the guest operating system
think the command key is down when it is really up. To prevent this situation
from happening, we simply drop the first command key event after the user has
gone into full screen mode using Command-F.

Add #if defined(CONFIG_VNC) in generated code, and adjust the
qmp/hmp code accordingly.
query-qmp-schema no longer reports the command/events etc as
available when disabled at compile.
Commands made conditional:
* query-vnc, query-vnc-servers, change-vnc-password
Before the patch, the commands for !CONFIG_VNC are stubs that fail
like this:
{"error": {"class": "GenericError",
"desc": "The feature 'vnc' is not enabled"}}
Afterwards, they fail like this:
{"error": {"class": "CommandNotFound",
"desc": "The command FOO has not been found"}}
I call that an improvement, because it lets clients distinguish
between command unavailable (class CommandNotFound) and command failed
(class GenericError).
Events made conditional:
* VNC_CONNECTED, VNC_INITIALIZED, VNC_DISCONNECTED
HMP change:
* info vnc
Will return "unknown command: 'info vnc'" when VNC is compiled
out (same as error for spice when --disable-spice)
Occurrences of VNC (case insensitive) in the schema that aren't
covered by this change:
* add_client
Command has other uses, including "socket bases character devices".
These are unconditional as far as I can tell.
* set_password, expire_password
In theory, these commands could be used for managing any service's
password. In practice, they're used for VNC and SPICE services.
They're documented for "remote display session" / "remote display
server".
The service is selected by argument @protocol. The code special-cases
protocol-specific argument checking, then calls a protocol-specific
function to do the work. If it fails, the command fails with "Could
not set password". It does when the service isn't compiled in (it's a
stub then).
We could make these commands conditional on the conjunction of all
services [currently: defined(CONFIG_VNC) || defined(CONFIG_SPICE)],
but I doubt it's worthwhile.
* change
Command has other uses, namely changing media.
This patch inlines a stub; no functional change.

A link property can be set during creation, with
object_property_add_link() and later with object_property_set_link().
add_link() doesn't add a reference to the target object, while
set_link() does.
Furthemore, OBJ_PROP_LINK_UNREF_ON_RELEASE flags, set during add_link,
says whether a reference must be released when the property is destroyed.
This can lead to leaks if the property was later set_link(), as the
added reference is never released.

excercise given we'll exit in a moment. When exiting qemu via
menu/file/quit this will not happen either. Just drop the code.
Also return TRUE unconditionally. This will tell gtk to ignore the
close request, so gtk will not start destroying widgets and causing
warnings due to UI code trying to talk to widgets which are gone.
Just depend on qmp_quit() doing it's job instead.

This patch allows to unbind devices from QemuConsoles, using the new
graphic_console_close() function. The QemuConsole will show a static
display then, saying the device was unplugged. When re-plugging a
display later on the QemuConsole will be reused.
Eventually we will allocate and release QemuConsoles dynamically at some
point in the future, that'll need more infrastructure though to notify
user interfaces (gtk, sdl, spice, ...) about QemuConsoles coming and
going.

Since commit 67a1de0d19 there is no space anymore between the
version number and the parentheses when running configure with
--with-pkgversion=foo :
$ qemu-system-s390x --version
QEMU emulator version 2.11.50(foo)
But the space is included when building without that option
when building from a git checkout:
$ qemu-system-s390x --version
QEMU emulator version 2.11.50 (v2.11.0-1494-gbec9c64-dirty)
The same confusion exists with the "query-version" QMP command.
Let's fix this by introducing a proper QEMU_FULL_VERSION definition
that includes the space and parentheses, while the QEMU_PKGVERSION
should just cleanly contain the package version string itself.
Note that this also changes the behavior of the "query-version" QMP
command (the space and parentheses are not included there anymore),
but that's supposed to be OK since the strings there are not meant
to be parsed by other tools.

Secondary displays in multihead setups are allowed to have a NULL
DisplaySurface. Typically user interfaces handle this by hiding the
window which shows the display in question.
This isn't an option for vnc though because it simply hasn't a concept
of windows or outputs. So handle the situation by showing a placeholder
DisplaySurface instead. Also check in console_select whenever a surface
is preset in the first place before requesting an update.
This fixes a segfault which can be triggered by switching to an unused
display (via vtrl-alt-<nr>) in a multihead setup, for example using
-device virtio-vga,max_outputs=2.

in qapi-schema.json, because that ends up in headers that that pull in
everything.
Move everything but include directives from qapi-schema.json to new
sub-module qapi/misc.json, then include just the "misc" shard where
possible.
It's possible everywhere, except:
* monitor.c needs qmp-command.h to get qmp_init_marshal()
* monitor.c, ui/vnc.c and the generated qapi-event-FOO.c need
qapi-event.h to get enum QAPIEvent

The 'vs->as.freq' value is a signed integer, which is read from an
unsigned 32-bit int field on the wire. There is thus a risk of overflow
on 32-bit platforms. Move the frequency limit checking to be done at
time of read before casting to a signed integer.

For very large framebuffers, it is theoretically possible for the result
of 'vs->throttle_output_offset * VNC_THROTTLE_OUTPUT_LIMIT_SCALE' to
exceed the size of a 32-bit int. For this to happen in practice, the
video RAM would have to be set to a large enough value, which is not
likely today. None the less we can be paranoid against future growth by
using division instead of multiplication when checking the limits.

The documentation on SDL_RenderPresent function states that
"the backbuffer should be considered invalidated after each present",
so copy the entire texture on each redraw.
On the other hand, SDL_UpdateTexture function is described as
"fairly slow function", so restrict it to just the changed pixels.
Also added SDL_RenderClear call, as suggested in the documentation

Having analyzed the coredump, I understood that the reason is that
ioc_tag is reset on vnc_disconnect_start and ioc is cleaned
in vnc_disconnect_finish. Between these two events due to some
reasons the ioc_tag was set again and after vnc_disconnect_finish
the handler is running with freed ioc,
which led to the segmentation fault.
The patch checks vs->disconnecting in places where we call
qio_channel_add_watch and resets handler if disconnecting == TRUE
to prevent such an occurrence.

ui: track how much decoded data we consumed when doing SASL encoding
I attempted to fix a flaw with tracking how much data had actually been
processed when encoding with SASL. With that flaw, the VNC server could
mistakenly discard queued data that had not been sent.
The fix was not quite right though, because it merely decremented the
vs->output.offset value. This is effectively discarding data from the
end of the pending output buffer. We actually need to discard data from
the start of the pending output buffer. We also want to free memory that
is no longer required. The correct way to handle this is to use the
buffer_advance() helper method instead of directly manipulating the
offset value.

changed the x_keymap.c keymap so that its target was qcodes instead of
qnums. It updated the GTK frontend to take account of this change, but
forgot to update the SDL1 frontend. Thus the SDL frontend was getting
qcodes but dispatching them as if they were qnums. IOW, keyboard input
was completely hosed with SDL1. Since the keyboard layout tables are
still all based on qnums, it is easier to just keep SDL1 using qnums as
it will be deleted in a few releases time.

Pixman returns a signed int for the image width/height, but the VNC
protocol only permits a unsigned int16. Effective framebuffer size
is determined by the guest, limited by the video RAM size, so the
dimensions are unlikely to exceed the range of an unsigned int16,
but this is not currently validated.
With the current use of 'int' for client width/height, the calculation

The point of writing a macro embedded in a 'do { ... } while (0)'
loop (particularly if the macro has multiple statements or would
otherwise end with an 'if' statement) is so that the macro can be
used as a drop-in statement with the caller supplying the
trailing ';'. Although our coding style frowns on brace-less 'if':
if (cond)
statement;
else
something else;
that is the classic case where failure to use do/while(0) wrapping
would cause the 'else' to pair with any embedded 'if' in the macro
rather than the intended outer 'if'. But conversely, if the macro
includes an embedded ';', then the same brace-less coding style
would now have two statements, making the 'else' a syntax error
rather than pairing with the outer 'if'. Thus, even though our
coding style with required braces is not impacted, ending a macro
with ';' makes our code harder to port to projects that use
brace-less styles.
The change should have no semantic impact. I was not able to
fully compile-test all of the changes (as some of them are
examples of the ugly bit-rotting debug print statements that are
completely elided by default, and I didn't want to recompile
with the necessary -D witnesses - cleaning those up is left as a
bite-sized task for another day); I did, however, audit that for
all files touched, all callers of the changed macros DID supply
a trailing ';' at the callsite, and did not appear to be used
as part of a brace-less conditional.

after opening. Then, the main window receives the KeyDown event again
and the whole process repeats.
This patch makes the SDL2 UI ignore the KeyDown events on a window that
just received the focus, if the GUI modifier was held. The ignore flag
is reset on a first KeyUp event. This effectively works around the issue
above.

The GTK 3.0 release was made in Feb, 2011:

That will soon be 7 years ago, which is enough time to consider

Thus we deprecate the GTK 2.x support, which will allow us to
delete it in the last release of 2018. By this time, GTK 3.x

While the QIOChannel APIs for reading/writing data return ssize_t, with negative
value indicating an error, the VNC code passes this return value through the
vnc_client_io_error() method. This detects the error condition, disconnects the
client and returns 0 to indicate error. Thus all the VNC helper methods should
return size_t (unsigned), and misleading comments which refer to the possibility
of negative return values need fixing.

The previous patches fix problems with throttling of forced framebuffer updates
and audio data capture that would cause the QEMU output buffer size to grow
without bound. Those fixes are graceful in that once the client catches up with
reading data from the server, everything continues operating normally.
There is some data which the server sends to the client that is impractical to
throttle. Specifically there are various pseudo framebuffer update encodings to
inform the client of things like desktop resizes, pointer changes, audio
playback start/stop, LED state and so on. These generally only involve sending
a very small amount of data to the client, but a malicious guest might be able
to do things that trigger these changes at a very high rate. Throttling them is
not practical as missed or delayed events would cause broken behaviour for the
client.
This patch thus takes a more forceful approach of setting an absolute upper
bound on the amount of data we permit to be present in the output buffer at
any time. The previous patch set a threshold for throttling the output buffer
by allowing an amount of data equivalent to one complete framebuffer update and
one seconds worth of audio data. On top of this it allowed for one further
forced framebuffer update to be queued.
To be conservative, we thus take that throttling threshold and multiply it by
5 to form an absolute upper bound. If this bound is hit during vnc_write() we
forceably disconnect the client, refusing to queue further data. This limit is
high enough that it should never be hit unless a malicious client is trying to
exploit the sever, or the network is completely saturated preventing any sending
of data on the socket.
This completes the fix for CVE-2017-15124 started in the previous patches.

The VNC server must throttle data sent to the client to prevent the 'output'
buffer size growing without bound, if the client stops reading data off the
socket (either maliciously or due to stalled/slow network connection).
The current throttling is very crude because it simply checks whether the
output buffer offset is zero. This check is disabled if the client has requested
a forced update, because we want to send these as soon as possible.
As a result, the VNC client can cause QEMU to allocate arbitrary amounts of RAM.
They can first start something in the guest that triggers lots of framebuffer
updates eg play a youtube video. Then repeatedly send full framebuffer update
requests, but never read data back from the server. This can easily make QEMU's
VNC server send buffer consume 100MB of RAM per second, until the OOM killer
starts reaping processes (hopefully the rogue QEMU process, but it might pick
others...).
To address this we make the throttling more intelligent, so we can throttle
full updates. When we get a forced update request, we keep track of exactly how
much data we put on the output buffer. We will not process a subsequent forced
update request until this data has been fully sent on the wire. We always allow
one forced update request to be in flight, regardless of what data is queued
for incremental updates or audio data. The slight complication is that we do
not initially know how much data an update will send, as this is done in the
background by the VNC job thread. So we must track the fact that the job thread
has an update pending, and not process any further updates until this job is
has been completed & put data on the output buffer.
This unbounded memory growth affects all VNC server configurations supported by
QEMU, with no workaround possible. The mitigating factor is that it can only be
triggered by a client that has authenticated with the VNC server, and who is
able to trigger a large quantity of framebuffer updates or audio samples from
the guest OS. Mostly they'll just succeed in getting the OOM killer to kill
their own QEMU process, but its possible other processes can get taken out as
collateral damage.

the websockets server, that was previously assigned CVE-2017-15268, and fixed

The VNC server must throttle data sent to the client to prevent the 'output'
buffer size growing without bound, if the client stops reading data off the
socket (either maliciously or due to stalled/slow network connection).
The current throttling is very crude because it simply checks whether the
output buffer offset is zero. This check must be disabled if audio capture is
enabled, because when streaming audio the output buffer offset will rarely be
zero due to queued audio data, and so this would starve framebuffer updates.
As a result, the VNC client can cause QEMU to allocate arbitrary amounts of RAM.
They can first start something in the guest that triggers lots of framebuffer
updates eg play a youtube video. Then enable audio capture, and simply never
read data back from the server. This can easily make QEMU's VNC server send
buffer consume 100MB of RAM per second, until the OOM killer starts reaping
processes (hopefully the rogue QEMU process, but it might pick others...).
To address this we make the throttling more intelligent, so we can throttle
when audio capture is active too. To determine how to throttle incremental
updates or audio data, we calculate a size threshold. Normally the threshold is
the approximate number of bytes associated with a single complete framebuffer
update. ie width * height * bytes per pixel. We'll send incremental updates
until we hit this threshold, at which point we'll stop sending updates until
data has been written to the wire, causing the output buffer offset to fall
back below the threshold.
If audio capture is enabled, we increase the size of the threshold to also
allow for upto 1 seconds worth of audio data samples. ie nchannels * bytes
per sample * frequency. This allows the output buffer to have a mixture of
incremental framebuffer updates and audio data queued, but once the threshold
is exceeded, audio data will be dropped and incremental updates will be
throttled.
This unbounded memory growth affects all VNC server configurations supported by
QEMU, with no workaround possible. The mitigating factor is that it can only be
triggered by a client that has authenticated with the VNC server, and who is

According to the RFB protocol, a client sends one or more framebuffer update
requests to the server. The server can reply with a single framebuffer update
response, that covers all previously received requests. Once the client has
read this update from the server, it may send further framebuffer update
requests to monitor future changes. The client is free to delay sending the
framebuffer update request if it needs to throttle the amount of data it is
reading from the server.
The QEMU VNC server, however, has never correctly handled the framebuffer
update requests. Once QEMU has received an update request, it will continue to
send client updates forever, even if the client hasn't asked for further
updates. This prevents the client from throttling back data it gets from the
server. This change fixes the flawed logic such that after a set of updates are
sent out, QEMU waits for a further update request before sending more data.

When we encode data for writing with SASL, we encode the entire pending output
buffer. The subsequent write, however, may not be able to send the full encoded
data in one go though, particularly with a slow network. So we delay setting the
output buffer offset back to zero until all the SASL encoded data is sent.
Between encoding the data and completing sending of the SASL encoded data,
however, more data might have been placed on the pending output buffer. So it
is not valid to set offset back to zero. Instead we must keep track of how much
data we consumed during encoding and subtract only that amount.
With the current bug we would be throwing away some pending data without having
sent it at all. By sheer luck this did not previously cause any serious problem
because appending data to the send buffer is always an atomic action, so we
only ever throw away complete RFB protocol messages. In the case of frame buffer
updates we'd catch up fairly quickly, so no obvious problem was visible.

The vnc_update_client() method checks the 'has_dirty' flag to see if there are
dirty regions that are pending to send to the client. Regardless of this flag,
if a forced update is requested, updates must be sent. For unknown reasons
though, the code also tries to sent updates if audio capture is enabled. This
makes no sense as audio capture state does not impact framebuffer contents, so

- KEY_PLAYPAUSE now maps to Q_KEY_CODE_AUDIOPLAY, instead of
KEY_PLAYCD. KEY_PLAYPAUSE is defined across almost all scancodes
sets, while KEY_PLAYCD only appears in AT set1, so the former is
a more useful mapping.
Missing entries in qcode_to_number now fixed:
Q_KEY_CODE_AGAIN -> 0x85
Q_KEY_CODE_PROPS -> 0x86
Q_KEY_CODE_UNDO -> 0x87
Q_KEY_CODE_FRONT -> 0x8c
Q_KEY_CODE_COPY -> 0xf8
Q_KEY_CODE_OPEN -> 0x64
Q_KEY_CODE_PASTE -> 0x65
Q_KEY_CODE_CUT -> 0xbc
Q_KEY_CODE_LF -> 0x5b
Q_KEY_CODE_HELP -> 0xf5
Q_KEY_CODE_COMPOSE -> 0xdd
Q_KEY_CODE_KP_EQUALS -> 0x59
Q_KEY_CODE_MEDIASELECT -> 0xed
In addition, some fixes:
- Q_KEY_CODE_MENU was incorrectly mapped to the compose
scancode (0xdd) and is now mapped to 0x9e
- Q_KEY_CODE_FIND was mapped to 0xe065 (Search) instead
of to 0xe041 (Find)
- Q_KEY_CODE_HIRAGANA was mapped to 0x70 (Katakanahiragana)
instead of of 0x77 (Hirigana)
- Q_KEY_CODE_PRINT was mapped to 0xb7 which is not a defined
scan code in AT set 1, it is now mapped to 0x54 (sysrq)

The https://gitlab.com/keycodemap/keycodemapdb/ repo contains a
data file mapping between all the different scancode/keycode/keysym
sets that are known, and a tool to auto-generate lookup tables for
different combinations.
It is used by GTK-VNC, SPICE-GTK and libvirt for mapping keys.
Using it in QEMU will let us replace many hand written lookup
tables with auto-generated tables from a master data source,
reducing bugs. Adding new QKeyCodes will now only require the
master table to be updated, all ~20 other tables will be
automatically updated to follow.
