Among the three codepaths we use O_APPEND to open a file for
appending, one used for writing GIT_TRACE output requires O_APPEND

d641097589 mingw: enable atomic O_APPEND
The Windows CRT implements O_APPEND "manually": on write() calls, the
file pointer is set to EOF before the data is written. Clearly, this is
not atomic. And in fact, this is the root cause of failures observed in
t5552-skipping-fetch-negotiator.sh and t5503-tagfollow.sh, where
different processes write to the same trace file simultanously; it also
occurred in t5400-send-pack.sh, but there it was worked around in
71406ed4d6 ("t5400: avoid concurrent writes into a trace file",
2017-05-18).

Fortunately, Windows does support atomic O_APPEND semantics using the
file access mode FILE_APPEND_DATA. Provide an implementation that does.

This implementation is minimal in such a way that it only implements
the open modes that are actually used in the Git code base. Emulation
for other modes can be added as necessary later. To become aware of
the necessity early, the unusal error ENOSYS is reported if an
unsupported mode is encountered.

This change also allows us to stop overriding argv[0] with the absolute

9ee0540a40 mingw: abort on invalid strftime formats
On Windows, strftime() does not silently ignore invalid formats, but
warns about them and then returns 0 and sets errno to EINVAL.

Unfortunately, Git does not expect such a behavior, as it disagrees
with strftime()'s semantics on Linux. As a consequence, Git
misinterprets the return value 0 as "I need more space" and grows the
buffer. As the larger buffer does not fix the format, the buffer grows
and grows and grows until we are out of memory and abort.

Ideally, we would switch off the parameter validation just for
strftime(), but we cannot even override the invalid parameter handler
via _set_thread_local_invalid_parameter_handler() using MINGW because
that function is not declared. Even _set_invalid_parameter_handler(),
which *is* declared, does not help, as it simply does... nothing.

So let's just bite the bullet and override strftime() for MINGW and
abort on an invalid format string. While this does not provide the
best user experience, it is the best we can do.

See https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/fe06s4ak.aspx for more
details.

The mailing address for the FSF has changed over the years. Rather than
updating the address across all files, refer readers to gnu.org, as the
GNU GPL documentation now suggests for license notices. The mailing
address is retained in the full license files (COPYING and LGPL-2.1).

The old address is still present in t/diff-lib/COPYING. This is
intentional, as the file is used in tests and the contents are not

1a172e4ac1 mingw: optionally redirect stderr/stdout via the same handle
The "2>&1" notation in Powershell and in Unix shells implies that stderr
is redirected to the same handle into which stdout is already written.

Let's use this special value to allow the same trick with
GIT_REDIRECT_STDERR and GIT_REDIRECT_STDOUT: if the former's value is
`2>&1`, then stderr will simply be written to the same handle as stdout.

The functionality was suggested by Jeff Hostetler.

3f944424ac mingw: add experimental feature to redirect standard handles
Particularly when calling Git from applications, such as Visual Studio's
Team Explorer, it is important that stdin/stdout/stderr are closed
properly. However, when spawning processes on Windows, those handles
must be marked as inheritable if we want to use them, but that flag is a
global flag and may very well be used by other spawned processes which
then do not know to close those handles.

Let's introduce a set of environment variables (GIT_REDIRECT_STDIN and
friends) that specify paths to files, or even better, named pipes (which
are similar to Unix sockets) and that are used by the spawned Git
process. This helps work around above-mentioned issue: those named
pipes will be opened in a non-inheritable way upon startup, and no
handles are passed around (and therefore no inherited handles need to be
closed by any spawned child).

This feature shipped with Git for Windows (marked as experimental) since
v2.11.0(2), so it has seen some serious testing in the meantime.

19716b21a4 cleanup: fix possible overflow errors in binary search
A common mistake when writing binary search is to allow possible
integer overflow by using the simple average:

	mid = (min + max) / 2;

Instead, use the overflow-safe version:

	mid = min + (max - min) / 2;

This translation is safe since the operation occurs inside a loop
conditioned on "min < max". The included changes were found using
the following git grep:

	git grep '/ *2;' '*.c'

Making this cleanup will prevent future review friction when a new
binary search is contructed based on existing code.

db2f7c48cb Win32: simplify loading of DLL functions
Dynamic loading of DLL functions is duplicated in several places in Git
for Windows' source code.

This patch adds a pair of macros to simplify the process: the
DECLARE_PROC_ADDR(<dll>, <return-type>, <function-name>,
...<function-parameter-types>...) macro to be used at the beginning of a
code block, and the INIT_PROC_ADDR(<function-name>) macro to call before
using the declared function. The return value of the INIT_PROC_ADDR()
call has to be checked; If it is NULL, the function was not found in the
specified DLL.

Example:

        DECLARE_PROC_ADDR(kernel32.dll, BOOL, CreateHardLinkW,
                          LPCWSTR, LPCWSTR, LPSECURITY_ATTRIBUTES);

        if (!INIT_PROC_ADDR(CreateHardLinkW))
                return error("Could not find CreateHardLinkW() function";

	if (!CreateHardLinkW(source, target, NULL))
return error("could not create hardlink from %S to %S",

496f256989 cygwin: allow pushing to UNC paths
cygwin can use an UNC path like //server/share/repo

 $ cd //server/share/dir
 $ mkdir test
 $ cd test
 $ git init --bare

However, when we try to push from a local Git repository to this repo,
there is a problem: Git converts the leading "//" into a single "/".

As cygwin handles an UNC path so well, Git can support them better:

 - Introduce cygwin_offset_1st_component() which keeps the leading "//",
similar to what Git for Windows does.

 - Move CYGWIN out of the POSIX in the tests for path normalization in t0060

b0a642ac46 git_fopen: fix a sparse 'not declared' warning
If git is built with the FREAD_READS_DIRECTORIES build variable set, this
would cause sparse to issue a 'not declared, should it be static?' warning
on Linux. This is a result of the method employed by 'compat/fopen.c' to
suppress the (possible) redefinition of the (system) fopen macro, which
also removes the extern declaration of the git_fopen function.

In order to suppress the warning, introduce a new macro to suppress the
definition (or possibly the re-definition) of the fopen symbol as a macro
override. This new macro (SUPPRESS_FOPEN_REDEFINITION) is only defined in
'compat/fopen.c', just prior to the inclusion of the 'git-compat-util.h'

e0ca1ca20a mingw: simplify PATH handling
On Windows the environment variable PATH contains a semicolon-separated
list of directories to search for, in order, when looking for the
location of a binary to run. get_path_split() parses it and returns an
array of string copies, which is iterated by path_lookup(), which in
turn passes each entry to lookup_prog().

Change lookup_prog() to take the directory name as a length-limited
string instead of as a NUL-terminated one and parse PATH directly in
path_lookup(). This avoids memory allocations, simplifying the code.

3057da5ad5 winansi: avoid use of uninitialized value
To initialize the foreground color attributes of "plain text", our ANSI
emulation tries to infer them from the currently attached console while
running the is_console() function. This function first tries to detect any
console attached to stdout, then it is called with stderr.

If neither stdout nor stderr has any console attached, it does not
actually matter what we use for "plain text" attributes, as we never need
to output any text to any console in that case.

However, after working on stdout and stderr, is_console() is called with
stdin, and it still tries to initialize the "plain text" attributes if
they had not been initialized earlier. In this case, we cannot detect any
attributes, and we used an uninitialized value for them.

Naturally, Coverity complained about this use case because it could not
reason about the code deeply enough to figure out that we do not even use
those attributes in that case.

Let's just initialize the value to 0 in that case, both to avoid future
Coverity reports, and to help catch future regressions in case anybody
changes the order of the is_console() calls (which would make the text
black on black).

When removing the hack for isatty(), we actually removed more than just
an isatty() hack: we removed the hack where internal data structures of
the MSVC runtime are modified in order to redirect stdout/stderr.

Instead of using that hack (that does not work with newer versions of
the runtime, anyway), we replaced it by reopening the respective file
descriptors.

What we forgot was to mark stderr as unbuffered again.

04ee8b875b compat: add qsort_s()
The function qsort_s() was introduced with C11 Annex K; it provides the
ability to pass a context pointer to the comparison function, supports
the convention of using a NULL pointer for an empty array and performs a
few safety checks.

Add an implementation based on compat/qsort.c for platforms that lack a
native standards-compliant qsort_s() (i.e. basically everyone).  It
doesn't perform the full range of possible checks: It uses size_t
instead of rsize_t and doesn't check nmemb and size against RSIZE_MAX
because we probably don't have the restricted size type defined. For
the same reason it returns int instead of errno_t.

86924838e3 mingw: fix colourization on Cygwin pseudo terminals
Git only colours the output and uses pagination if isatty() returns 1.
MSYS2 and Cygwin emulate pseudo terminals via named pipes, meaning that
isatty() returns 0.

f7f90e0f4f (mingw: make isatty() recognize MSYS2's pseudo terminals
(/dev/pty*), 2016-04-27) fixed this for MSYS2 terminals, but not for
Cygwin.

The named pipes that Cygwin and MSYS2 use are very similar. MSYS2 PTY pipes
are called 'msys-*-pty*' and Cygwin uses 'cygwin-*-pty*'. This commit
modifies the existing check to allow both MSYS2 and Cygwin PTY pipes to be
identified as TTYs.

Note that pagination is still broken when running Git for Windows from
within Cygwin, as MSYS2's less.exe is spawned (and does not like to
interact with Cygwin's PTY).

fee807c5f6 mingw: adjust is_console() to work with stdin
When determining whether a handle corresponds to a *real* Win32 Console
(as opposed to, say, a character device such as /dev/null), we use the
GetConsoleOutputBufferInfo() function as a tell-tale.

However, that does not work for *input* handles associated with a
console. Let's just use the GetConsoleMode() function for input handles,
and since it does not work on output handles fall back to the previous
method for those.

This patch prepares for using is_console() instead of my previous

cbb3f3c9b1 mingw: intercept isatty() to handle /dev/null as Git expects it
When Git's source code calls isatty(), it really asks whether the
respective file descriptor is connected to an interactive terminal.

Windows' _isatty() function, however, determines whether the file
descriptor is associated with a character device. And NUL, Windows'
equivalent of /dev/null, is a character device.

Which means that for years, Git mistakenly detected an associated
interactive terminal when being run through the test suite, which
almost always redirects stdin, stdout and stderr to /dev/null.

This bug only became obvious, and painfully so, when the new
bisect--helper entered the `pu` branch and made the automatic build & test
time out because t6030 was waiting for an answer.

05d1ed6148 mingw: ensure temporary file handles are not inherited by child processes
When the index is locked and child processes inherit the handle to
said lock and the parent process wants to remove the lock before the
child process exits, on Windows there is a problem: it won't work
because files cannot be deleted if a process holds a handle on them.
The symptom:

Rename from 'xxx/.git/index.lock' to 'xxx/.git/index' failed.
    Should I try again? (y/n)

Spawning child processes with bInheritHandles==FALSE would not work
because no file handles would be inherited, not even the hStdXxx
handles in STARTUPINFO (stdin/stdout/stderr).

Opening every file with O_NOINHERIT does not work, either, as e.g.
git-upload-pack expects inherited file handles.

This leaves us with the only way out: creating temp files with the
O_NOINHERIT flag. This flag is Windows-specific, however. For our
purposes, it is equivalent to O_CLOEXEC (which does not exist on
Windows), so let's just open temporary files with the O_CLOEXEC flag and
map that flag to O_NOINHERIT on Windows.

As Eric Wong pointed out, we need to be careful to handle the case where
the Linux headers used to compile Git support O_CLOEXEC but the Linux
kernel used to run Git does not: it returns an EINVAL.

This fixes the test that we just introduced to demonstrate the problem.

c6c9e1885c nedmalloc: work around overzealous GCC 6 warning
With GCC 6, the strdup() function is declared with the "nonnull"
attribute, stating that it is not allowed to pass a NULL value as
parameter.

In nedmalloc()'s reimplementation of strdup(), Postel's Law is heeded
and NULL parameters are handled gracefully. GCC 6 complains about that
now because it thinks that NULL cannot be passed to strdup() anyway.

Because the callers in this project of strdup() must be prepared to
call any implementation of strdup() supplied by the platform, so it
is pointless to pretend that it is OK to call it with NULL.

Remove the conditional based on NULL-ness of the input; this
squelches the warning. Check the return value of malloc() instead
to make sure we actually got the memory to write to.

See https://gcc.gnu.org/gcc-6/porting_to.html for details.

bd8f005583 regex: fix a SIZE_MAX macro redefinition warning
Since commit 56a1a3ab ("Silence GCC's \"cast of pointer to integer of a
different size\" warning", 26-10-2015), sparse has been issuing a macro
redefinition warning for the SIZE_MAX macro. However, gcc did not issue
any such warning.

After commit 56a1a3ab, in terms of the order of #includes and #defines,
the code looked something like:

  $ cat -n junk.c
       1	#include <stddef.h>
       2
       3	#define SIZE_MAX ((size_t) -1)
       4
       5	#include <stdint.h>
       6
7	int main(int argc, char *argv[])
       8	{
       9		return 0;
      10	}
  $
  $ gcc junk.c
  $

However, if you compile that file with -Wsystem-headers, then it will
also issue a warning. Having set -Wsystem-headers in CFLAGS, using the
config.mak file, then (on cygwin):

  $ make compat/regex/regex.o
      CC compat/regex/regex.o
  In file included from /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-cygwin/4.9.3/include/stdint.h:9:0,
                   from compat/regex/regcomp.c:21,
                   from compat/regex/regex.c:77:
  /usr/include/stdint.h:362:0: warning: "SIZE_MAX" redefined
   #define SIZE_MAX (__SIZE_MAX__)
   ^
  In file included from compat/regex/regex.c:69:0:
compat/regex/regex_internal.h:108:0: note: this is the location of the previous definition
   # define SIZE_MAX ((size_t) -1)
   ^
  $

The compilation of the compat/regex code is somewhat unusual in that the
regex.c file directly #includes the other c files (regcomp.c, regexec.c
and regex_internal.c). Commit 56a1a3ab added an #include of <stdint.h>
to the regcomp.c file, which results in the redefinition, since this is
included after the regex_internal.h header. This header file contains a
'fallback' definition for SIZE_MAX, in order to support systems which do
not have the <stdint.h> header (the HAVE_STDINT_H macro is not defined).

In order to suppress the warning, we move the #include of <stdint.h>
from regcomp.c to the start of the compilation unit, close to the top
of regex.c, prior to the #include of the regex_internal.h header.

f7f90e0f4f mingw: make isatty() recognize MSYS2's pseudo terminals (/dev/pty*)
MSYS2 emulates pseudo terminals via named pipes, and isatty() returns 0
for such file descriptors. Therefore, some interactive functionality
(such as launching a pager, asking if a failed unlink should be repeated
etc.) doesn't work when run in a terminal emulator that uses MSYS2's
ptys (such as mintty).

However, MSYS2 uses special names for its pty pipes ('msys-*-pty*'),
which allows us to distinguish them from normal piped input / output.

On startup, check if stdin / stdout / stderr are connected to such pipes
using the NtQueryObject API from NTDll.dll. If the names match, adjust
the flags in MSVCRT's ioinfo structure accordingly.

ed84387a6b Windows: only add a no-op pthread_sigmask() when needed
In f924b52 (Windows: add pthread_sigmask() that does nothing,
2016-05-01), we introduced a no-op for Windows. However, this breaks
building Git in Git for Windows' SDK because pthread_sigmask() is
already a no-op there, #define'd in the pthread_signal.h header in
/mingw64/x86_64-w64-mingw32/include/.

Let's wrap the definition of pthread_sigmask() in a guard that skips
it when compiling with MinGW-w64' headers.

ebf31e70bb mingw: remove unnecessary definition
For some reason, the definition of the MINGW version of
`mark_as_git_dir()` slipped into this developer's patch series to
support building Git for Windows.

As the `mark_as_git_dir()` function is not needed at all anymore (it was
used originally to support the core.hideDotFiles = gitDirOnly setting,
but we now use a different method to support that case), let's just
remove it.

f30afdabbf mingw: introduce the 'core.hideDotFiles' setting
On Unix (and Linux), files and directories whose names start with a dot
are usually not shown by default. This convention is used by Git: the
.git/ directory should be left alone by regular users, and only accessed
through Git itself.

On Windows, no such convention exists. Instead, there is an explicit flag
to mark files or directories as hidden.

In the early days, Git for Windows did not mark the .git/ directory (or
for that matter, any file or directory whose name starts with a dot)
hidden. This lead to quite a bit of confusion, and even loss of data.

Consequently, Git for Windows introduced the core.hideDotFiles setting,
with three possible values: true, false, and dotGitOnly, defaulting to
marking only the .git/ directory as hidden.

The rationale: users do not need to access .git/ directly, and indeed (as
was demonstrated) should not really see that directory, either. However,
not all dot files should be hidden by default, as e.g. Eclipse does not
show them (and the user would therefore be unable to see, say, a
.gitattributes file).

In over five years since the last attempt to bring this patch into core
Git, a slightly buggy version of this patch has served Git for Windows'
users well: no single report indicated problems with the hidden .git/
directory, and the stream of problems caused by the previously non-hidden
.git/ directory simply stopped. The bugs have been fixed during the
process of getting this patch upstream.

Note that there is a funny quirk we have to pay attention to when
creating hidden files: we use Win32's _wopen() function which
transmogrifies its arguments and hands off to Win32's CreateFile()
function. That latter function errors out with ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED (the
equivalent of EACCES) when the equivalent of the O_CREAT flag was passed
and the file attributes (including the hidden flag) do not match an
existing file's. And _wopen() accepts no parameter that would be
transmogrified into said hidden flag. Therefore, we simply try again
without O_CREAT.

A slightly different method is required for our fopen()/freopen()
function as we cannot even *remove* the implicit O_CREAT flag.
Therefore, we briefly mark existing files as unhidden when opening them
via fopen()/freopen().

The ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED error can also be triggered by opening a file
that is marked as a system file (which is unlikely to be tracked in
Git), and by trying to create a file that has *just* been deleted and is
awaiting the last open handles to be released (which would be handled
better by the "Try again?" logic, a story for a different patch series,
though). In both cases, it does not matter much if we try again without
the O_CREAT flag, read: it does not hurt, either.

For details how ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED can be triggered, see
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa363858

f924b52a77 Windows: add pthread_sigmask() that does nothing
A previous change introduced a call to pthread_sigmask() in order to block
SIGPIPE in a thread. Since there are no signal facilities on Windows that
are similar to POSIX signals, just ignore the request to block the signal.
In the particular case, the effect of blocking SIGPIPE on POSIX is that
write() calls return EPIPE when the reader closes the pipe. This is how
write() behaves on Windows.

d5425d10ca mmap(win32): avoid expensive fstat() call
On Windows, we have to emulate the fstat() call to fill out information

If all we want is the file size, we can use the much cheaper

Often we are mmap()ing read-only. In those cases, it is wasteful to map in

probably impossible to trigger an overflow in most of these

variants. This may be fixing real bugs, and it makes

e7d5ce8165 mingw: avoid linking to the C library's isalpha()
The implementation of mingw_skip_dos_drive_prefix() calls isalpha() via
has_dos_drive_prefix(). Since the definition occurs long before isalpha()
is defined in git-compat-util.h, my build environment reports:

    CC alloc.o
In file included from git-compat-util.h:186,
                 from cache.h:4,
                 from alloc.c:12:
compat/mingw.h: In function 'mingw_skip_dos_drive_prefix':
compat/mingw.h:365: warning: implicit declaration of function 'isalpha'

Dscho does not see a similar warning in his build and suspects that
ctype.h is included somehow behind the scenes. This implies that his build
links to the C library's isalpha() and does not use git's isalpha().

To fix both the warning in my build and the inconsistency in Dscho's
build, move the function definition to mingw.c. Then it picks up git's
isalpha() because git-compat-util.h is included at the top of the file.

8f309aeb82 strbuf: introduce strbuf_getline_{lf,nul}()
The strbuf_getline() interface allows a byte other than LF or NUL as
the line terminator, but this is only because I wrote these
codepaths anticipating that there might be a value other than NUL
and LF that could be useful when I introduced line_termination long
time ago. No useful caller that uses other value has emerged.

By now, it is clear that the interface is overly broad without a
good reason. Many codepaths have hardcoded preference to read
either LF terminated or NUL terminated records from their input, and
then call strbuf_getline() with LF or NUL as the third parameter.

This step introduces two thin wrappers around strbuf_getline(),
namely, strbuf_getline_lf() and strbuf_getline_nul(), and
mechanically rewrites these call sites to call either one of
them. The changes contained in this patch are:

 * introduction of these two functions in strbuf.[ch]

 * mechanical conversion of all callers to strbuf_getline() with
either '\n' or '\0' as the third parameter to instead call the
   respective thin wrapper.

After this step, output from "git grep 'strbuf_getline('" would
become a lot smaller. An interim goal of this series is to make
this an empty set, so that we can have strbuf_getline_crlf() take
over the shorter name strbuf_getline().

824682ab51 compat/basename.c: provide a dirname() compatibility function
When there is no `libgen.h` to our disposal, we miss the `dirname()`
function. Earlier we added basename() compatibility function for
the same reason at e1c06886 (compat: add a basename() compatibility

So far, we only had one user of that function: credential-cache--daemon

now we also have `builtin/am.c` as user, so we need it.

Since `dirname()` is a sibling of `basename()`, we simply put our very

2f36eed936 Refactor skipping DOS drive prefixes
Junio noticed that there is an implicit assumption in pretty much
all the code calling has_dos_drive_prefix(): it forces all of its
callsites to hardcode the knowledge that the DOS drive prefix is
always two bytes long.

While this assumption is pretty safe, we can still make the code
more readable and less error-prone by introducing a function that
skips the DOS drive prefix safely.

While at it, we change the has_dos_drive_prefix() return value: it
now returns the number of bytes to be skipped if there is a DOS
drive prefix.

The byte-swapping code automatically decides, based on the

It can be handy to override this decision, though, when

There's no nice Makefile knob here; this is for prodding at

2b86292ed1 mingw: emulate write(2) that fails with a EPIPE
On Windows, when writing to a pipe fails, errno is always
EINVAL. However, Git expects it to be EPIPE.

According to the documentation, there are two cases in which write()
triggers EINVAL: the buffer is NULL, or the length is odd but the mode
is 16-bit Unicode (the broken pipe is not mentioned as possible cause).
Git never sets the file mode to anything but binary, therefore we know
that errno should actually be EPIPE if it is EINVAL and the buffer is
not NULL.

details.

When we already know the length of a string (e.g., because

fdf729661a probe_utf8_pathname_composition: use internal strbuf
When we are initializing a .git directory, we may call
probe_utf8_pathname_composition to detect utf8 mangling. We
pass in a path buffer for it to use, and it blindly
strcpy()s into it, not knowing whether the buffer is large
enough to hold the result or not.

In practice this isn't a big deal, because the buffer we
pass in already contains "$GIT_DIR/config", and we append
only a few extra bytes to it. But we can easily do the right
thing just by calling git_path_buf ourselves. Technically
this results in a different pathname (before we appended our
utf8 characters to the "config" path, and now they get their
own files in $GIT_DIR), but that should not matter for our
purposes.

5096d4909f convert trivial sprintf / strcpy calls to xsnprintf
We sometimes sprintf into fixed-size buffers when we know
that the buffer is large enough to fit the input (either
because it's a constant, or because it's numeric input that

strings.

However, these sites make it hard to audit sprintf and
strcpy calls for buffer overflows, as a reader has to
cross-reference the size of the array with the input. Let's
use xsnprintf instead, which communicates to a reader that
we don't expect this to overflow (and catches the mistake in

db85a8a9c2 compat/inet_ntop: fix off-by-one in inet_ntop4
Our compat inet_ntop4 function writes to a temporary buffer
with snprintf, and then uses strcpy to put the result into
the final "dst" buffer. We check the return value of
snprintf against the size of "dst", but fail to account for
the NUL terminator. As a result, we may overflow "dst" with
a single NUL. In practice, this doesn't happen because the
output of inet_ntop is limited, and we provide buffers that
are way oversized.

We can fix the off-by-one check easily, but while we are
here let's also use strlcpy for increased safety, just in
case there are other bugs lurking.

As a side note, this compat code seems to be BSD-derived.

Ensure that when passing a pipe, the gnulib poll replacement will not

Not obeying the timeout (and merely returning 0) causes pathological
behavior when preparing a packfile for a repository and taking a
long time to do so. If poll were to return 0 immediately, this would
cause keep-alives to get sent as quickly as possible until the packfile

d543d9c0f4 compat: convert modes to use portable file type values
This adds simple wrapper functions around calls to stat(), fstat(),
and lstat() that translate the operating system's native file type
bits to those used by most operating systems. It also rewrites the
S_IF* macros to the common values, so all file type processing is
performed using the translated modes. This makes projects portable
across operating systems that use different file type definitions.

Only the file type bits may be affected by these compatibility
functions; the file permission bits are assumed to be 07777 and are
passed through unchanged.

ba6fad02b6 Windows: correct detection of EISDIR in mingw_open()
According to the Linux open(2) man page, open() must return EISDIR
if a directory was attempted to be opened for writing. Our emulation
in mingw_open() does not get this right: it checks only for O_CREAT.

Fix it to check for a write request.

This fixes a failure in reflog handling, which opens files with
O_APPEND|O_WRONLY, but without O_CREAT, and expects EISDIR when the
named file happens to be a directory.

343ff06da7 Win32: keep the environment sorted
The Windows environment is sorted, keep it that way for O(log n)
environment access.

Change compareenv to compare only the keys, so that it can be used to
find an entry irrespective of the value.

Change lookupenv to binary seach for an entry. Return one's complement of
the insert position if not found (libc's bsearch returns NULL).

Replace MSVCRT's getenv with a minimal do_getenv based on the binary search
function.

Change do_putenv to insert new entries at the correct position. Simplify
the function by swapping if conditions and using memmove instead of for
loops.

Move qsort from make_environment_block to mingw_startup. We still need to
sort on startup to make sure that the environment is sorted according to
our compareenv function (while Win32 / CreateProcess requires the
environment block to be sorted case-insensitively, CreateProcess currently
doesn't enforce this, and some applications such as bash just don't care).

Note that environment functions are _not_ thread-safe and are not required
to be so by POSIX, the application is responsible for synchronizing access
to the environment. MSVCRT's getenv and our new getenv implementation are
better than that in that they are thread-safe with respect to other getenv
calls as long as the environment is not modified. Git's indiscriminate use
of getenv in background threads currently requires this property.

6f1c189cad Win32: use low-level memory allocation during initialization
As of d41489a6 "Add more large blob test cases", git's high-level memory
allocation functions (xmalloc, xmemdupz etc.) access the environment to
simulate limited memory in tests (see 'getenv("GIT_ALLOC_LIMIT")' in
memory_limit_check()). These functions should not be used before the
environment is fully initialized (particularly not to initialize the
environment itself).

The current solution ('environ = NULL; ALLOC_GROW(environ...)') only works
because MSVCRT's getenv() reinitializes environ when it is NULL (i.e. it
leaves us with two sets of unusabe (non-UTF-8) and unfreeable (CRT-
allocated) environments).

Add our own set of malloc-or-die functions to be used in startup code.

Also check the result of __wgetmainargs, which may fail if there's not
enough memory for wide-char arguments and environment.

This patch is in preparation of the sorted environment feature, which
completely replaces MSVCRT's getenv() implementation.

77734da241 Win32: don't copy the environment twice when spawning child processes
When spawning child processes via start_command(), the environment and all
environment entries are copied twice. First by make_augmented_environ /
copy_environ to merge with child_process.env. Then a second time by
make_environment_block to create a sorted environment block string as
required by CreateProcess.

Move the merge logic to make_environment_block so that we only need to copy
the environment once. This changes semantics of the env parameter: it now
expects a delta (such as child_process.env) rather than a full environment.
This is not a problem as the parameter is only used by start_command()
(all other callers previously passed char **environ, and now pass NULL).

The merge logic no longer xstrdup()s the environment strings, so do_putenv
must not free them. Add a parameter to distinguish this from normal putenv.

Remove the now unused make_augmented_environ / free_environ API.

b729f98fa5 Win32: Unicode environment (incoming)
Convert environment from UTF-16 to UTF-8 on startup.

No changes to getenv() are necessary, as the MSVCRT version is implemented
on top of char **environ.

However, putenv / _wputenv from MSVCRT no longer work, for two reasons:
1. they try to keep environ, _wenviron and the Win32 process environment
in sync, using the default system encoding instead of UTF-8 to convert
between charsets
2. msysgit and MSVCRT use different allocators, memory allocated in git
cannot be freed by the CRT and vice versa

Implement mingw_putenv using the env_setenv helper function from the
environment merge code.

Note that in case of memory allocation failure, putenv now dies with error
message (due to xrealloc) instead of failing with ENOMEM. As git assumes
setenv / putenv to always succeed, this prevents it from continuing with
incorrect settings.

9ae1afa5e6 Revert "Windows: teach getenv to do a case-sensitive search"
This reverts commit df599e9612.

As of 5e9637c6 "i18n: add infrastructure for translating Git with gettext",
eval_gettext uses MinGW envsubst.exe instead of git-sh-i18n--envsubst.exe
for variable substitution. This breaks git-submodule.sh messages and tests,
as envsubst.exe doesn't support case-sensitive environment lookup (the same
is true for almost everything on Windows, including MSys and Cygwin tools).

30a615ac "Windows/i18n: rename $path to prevent clashes with $PATH" renames
the conflicting variable in git-submodule.sh, so that it works on Windows

Adds trivial wrappers for access, chmod and chdir.

Adds wrapper for mktemp (needed for both mkstemp and mkdtemp).

The simplest way to convert a repository with legacy-encoded (e.g. Cp1252)
file names to UTF-8 ist to checkout with an old msysgit version and
"git add --all & git commit" with the new version.

Includes a fix for bug reported by John Chen:
On Windows XP (not Win7), directories cannot be deleted while a find handle
is open, causing "Deletion of directory '...' failed. Should I try again?"
prompts.

Prior to this commit, these failures were silently ignored due to
strbuf_free in is_dir_empty resetting GetLastError to ERROR_SUCCESS.

Close the find handle in is_dir_empty so that git doesn't block deletion
of the directory even after all other applications have released it.

MingwRT listens to _CRT_glob to decide if __getmainargs should

Disable __getmainargs' command line wildcard expansion, so these
patterns will be left untouched, and handled by Git's superior

spawn* functions take an env parameter and needlessly pass the global
char **environ around. Remove the env parameter where it's not needed.

This removes the internal mingw_execve abstraction, which is no longer
needed.

51822653f5 Win32: reliably detect console pipe handles
As of "Win32: Thread-safe windows console output", child processes may
print to the console even if stdout has been redirected to a file. E.g.:

 git config tar.cat.command "cat"
 git archive -o test.cat HEAD

Detecting whether stdout / stderr point to our console pipe is currently
based on the assumption that OS HANDLE values are never reused. This is
apparently not true if stdout / stderr is replaced via dup2() (as in
builtin/archive.c:17).

Instead of comparing handle values, check if the file descriptor isatty()
backed by a pipe OS handle. This is only possible by swapping the handles
in MSVCRT's internal data structures, as we do in winansi_init().

fcd428f4a9 Win32: fix broken pipe detection
As of "Win32: Thread-safe windows console output", git-log no longer
terminates when the pager process dies. This is due to disabling buffering
for the replaced stdout / stderr streams. Git-log will periodically fflush
stdout (see write_or_die.c/mayble_flush_or_die()), but with no buffering,
this is a NOP that always succeeds (so we never detect the EPIPE error).

Exchange the original console handles with our console thread pipe handles
by accessing the internal MSVCRT data structures directly (which are
exposed via __pioinfo for some reason).

Implement this with minimal assumptions about the actual data structure to
make it work with different (hopefully even future) MSVCRT versions.

While messing with internal data structures is ugly, this patch solves the
problem at the source instead of adding more workarounds. We no longer need
the special winansi_isatty override, and the limitations documented in
"Win32: Thread-safe windows console output" are gone (i.e. fdopen(1/2)
returns unbuffered streams now, and isatty() for duped console file
descriptors works as expected).

eac14f8909 Win32: Thread-safe windows console output
Winansi.c has many static variables that are accessed and modified from
the [v][f]printf / fputs functions overridden in the file. This may cause
multi threaded git commands that print to the console to produce corrupted
output or even crash.

Additionally, winansi.c doesn't override all functions that can be used to
print to the console (e.g. fwrite, write, fputc are missing), so that ANSI
escapes don't work properly for some git commands (e.g. git-grep).

Instead of doing ANSI emulation in just a few wrapped functions on top of
the IO API, let's plug into the IO system and take advantage of the thread
safety inherent to the IO system.

Redirect stdout and stderr to a pipe if they point to the console. A
background thread reads from the pipe, handles ANSI escape sequences and
UTF-8 to UTF-16 conversion, then writes to the console.

The pipe-based stdout and stderr replacements must be set to unbuffered, as
MSVCRT doesn't support line buffering and fully buffered streams are
inappropriate for console output.

Due to the byte-oriented pipe, ANSI escape sequences and multi-byte UTF-8
sequences can no longer be expected to arrive in one piece. Replace the
string-based ansi_emulate() with a simple stateful parser (this also fixes
colored diff hunk headers, which were broken as of commit 2efcc977).

Override isatty to return true for the pipes redirecting to the console.

Exec/spawn obtain the original console handle to pass to the next process
via winansi_get_osfhandle().

All other overrides are gone, the default stdio implementations work as
expected with the piped stdout/stderr descriptors.

Global variables are either initialized on startup (single threaded) or
exclusively modified by the background thread. Threads communicate through
the pipe, no further synchronization is necessary.

The background thread is terminated by disonnecting the pipe after flushing
the stdio and pipe buffers. This doesn't work for anonymous pipes (created
via CreatePipe), as DisconnectNamedPipe only works on the read end, which
discards remaining data. Thus we have to setup the pipe manually, with the
write end beeing the server (opened with CreateNamedPipe) and the read end
the client (opened with CreateFile).

Limitations: doesn't track reopened or duped file descriptors, i.e.:
- fdopen(1/2) returns fully buffered streams
- dup(1/2), dup2(1/2) returns normal pipe descriptors (i.e. isatty() =
false, winansi_get_osfhandle won't return the original console handle)

Currently, only the git-format-patch command uses xfdopen(xdup(1)) (see
"realstdout" in builtin/log.c), but works well with these limitations.

Many thanks to Atsushi Nakagawa <atnak@chejz.com> for suggesting and

1c950a594c Win32: add Unicode conversion functions
Add Unicode conversion functions to convert between Windows native UTF-16LE
encoding to UTF-8 and back.

To support repositories with legacy-encoded file names, the UTF-8 to UTF-16
conversion function tries to create valid, unique file names even for
invalid UTF-8 byte sequences, so that these repositories can be checked out
without error.

The current implementation leaves invalid UTF-8 bytes in range 0xa0 - 0xff
as is (producing printable Unicode chars \u00a0 - \u00ff, equivalent to
ISO-8859-1), and converts 0x80 - 0x9f to hex-code (\u0080 - \u009f are
control chars).

The Windows MultiByteToWideChar API was not used as it either drops invalid
UTF-8 sequences (on Win2k/XP; producing non-unique or even empty file
names) or converts them to the replacement char \ufffd (Vista/7; causing
ERROR_INVALID_NAME in subsequent calls to file system APIs).

d8890ce726 Win32 dirent: improve dirent implementation
Improve the dirent implementation by removing the relics that were once
necessary to plug into the now unused MinGW runtime, in preparation for
Unicode file name support.

Move FindFirstFile to opendir, and FindClose to closedir, with the
following implications:
- DIR.dd_name is no longer needed
- chdir(one); opendir(relative); chdir(two); readdir() works as expected
  (i.e. lists one/relative instead of two/relative)
- DIR.dd_handle is a valid handle for the entire lifetime of the DIR struct
- thus, all checks for dd_handle == INVALID_HANDLE_VALUE and dd_handle == 0
  have been removed
- the special case that the directory has been fully read (which was
  previously explicitly tracked with dd_handle == INVALID_HANDLE_VALUE &&
dd_stat != 0) is now handled implicitly by the FindNextFile error
handling code (if a client continues to call readdir after receiving
NULL, FindNextFile will continue to fail with ERROR_NO_MORE_FILES, to
  the same effect)
- extracting dirent data from WIN32_FIND_DATA is needed in two places, so
  moved to its own method
- GetFileAttributes is no longer needed. The same information can be
obtained from the FindFirstFile error code, which is ERROR_DIRECTORY if
the name is NOT a directory (-> ENOTDIR), otherwise we can use
  err_win_to_posix (e.g. ERROR_PATH_NOT_FOUND -> ENOENT). The
ERROR_DIRECTORY case could be fixed in err_win_to_posix, but this
  probably breaks other functionality.

Removes the ERROR_NO_MORE_FILES check after FindFirstFile (this was
fortunately a NOOP (searching for '*' always finds '.' and '..'),
otherwise the subsequent code would have copied data from an uninitialized
buffer).

Changes malloc to git support function xmalloc, so opendir will die() if
out of memory, rather than failing with ENOMEM and letting git work on
incomplete directory listings (error handling in dir.c is quite sparse).

9c65ee15ee compat/bswap.h: fix endianness detection
The changes to make detection of endianness more portable had a bug
that breaks on (at least) Solaris x86.

The bug appears to be a simple copy/paste typo. It checks for
_BIG_ENDIAN and not _LITTLE_ENDIAN for both the case where we would
decide the system is big endian and little endian. Instead, the
second test should be for _LITTLE_ENDIAN and not _BIG_ENDIAN.

Two fixes were possible:

 1. Change the negation order of the conditions in the second test.
 2. Reverse the order of the conditions in the second test.

Use the second option so that the condition we expect is always a
positive check.

76e7c8a7ed compat/poll: sleep 1 millisecond to avoid busy wait
SwitchToThread() only gives away the rest of the current time slice
to another thread in the current process. So if the thread that feeds
the file decscriptor we're polling is not in the current process, we
get busy-waiting.

I played around with this quite a bit. After trying some more complex
schemes, I found that what worked best is to just sleep 1 millisecond
between iterations. Though it's a very short time, it still completely
eliminates the busy wait condition, without hurting perf.

There code uses SleepEx(1, TRUE) to sleep. See this page for a good
discussion of why that is better than calling SwitchToThread, which
is what was used previously:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1383943/switchtothread-vs-sleep1

Note that calling SleepEx(0, TRUE) does *not* solve the busy wait.

The most striking case was when testing on a UNC share with a large repo,
on a single CPU machine. Without the fix, it took 4 minutes 15 seconds,
and with the fix it took just 1:08! I think it's because git-upload-pack's
busy wait was eating the CPU away from the git process that's doing the
real work. With multi-proc, the timing is not much different, but tons of
CPU time is still wasted, which can be a killer on a server that needs to
do bunch of other things.

I also tested the very fast local case, and didn't see any measurable
difference. On a big repo with 4500 files, the upload-pack took about 2
seconds with and without the fix.

[jc: this was first accepted in msysgit tree in May 2012 via a pull
request and Paolo Bonzini has also accepted the same fix to Gnulib

c3d8da571f read-cache: use get_be32 instead of hand-rolled ntoh_l
Commit d60c49c (read-cache.c: allow unaligned mapping of the
index file, 2012-04-03) introduced helpers to access
unaligned data. However, we already have get_be32, which has
a few advantages:

  1. It's already written, so we avoid duplication.

  2. It's probably faster, since it does the endian
conversion and the alignment fix at the same time.

  3. The get_be32 code is well-tested, having been in
block-sha1 for a long time. By contrast, our custom
helpers were probably almost never used, since the user
needed to manually define a macro to enable them.

We have to add a get_be16 implementation to the existing
get_be32, but that is very simple to do.

802b123366 block-sha1: factor out get_be and put_be wrappers
The BLK_SHA1 code has optimized wrappers for doing endian
conversions on memory that may not be aligned. Let's pull
them out so that we can use them elsewhere, especially the
time-tested list of platforms that prefer each strategy.

bc380fca60 mark Windows build scripts executable
On Windows the convention is to rely on filename extensions to decide
whether a file is executable so Windows users are probably not relying
on the executable bit of these scripts, but on other platforms it can

7e3dae4943 compat: add endianness helpers
The POSIX standard doesn't currently define a `ntohll`/`htonll`
function pair to perform network-to-host and host-to-network
swaps of 64-bit data. These 64-bit swaps are necessary for the on-disk
storage of EWAH bitmaps if they are not in native byte order.

c01499ef69 C: have space around && and || operators
Correct all hits from

    git grep -e '\(&&\|||\)[^ ]' -e '[^	 ]\(&&\|||\)' -- '*.c'

i.e. && or || operators that are followed by anything but a SP,
or that follow something other than a SP or a HT, so that these
operators have a SP around it when necessary.

We usually refrain from making this kind of a tree-wide change in
order to avoid unnecessary conflicts with other "real work" patches,
but in this case, the end result does not have a potentially
cumbersome tree-wide impact, while this is a tree-wide cleanup.

Fixes to compat/regex/regcomp.c and xdiff/xemit.c are to replace a
HT immediately after && with a SP.

This is based on Felipe's patch to bultin/symbolic-ref.c; I did all
the finding out what other files in the whole tree need to be fixed
and did the fix and also the log message while reviewing that single
liner, so any screw-ups in this version are mine.

a2374f58e8 MSVC: fix stat definition hell
In msvc.h, there's a couple of stat related functions defined diffently
from mingw.h. When we remove these definitions, the only problem we get is
"warning C4005: '_stati64' : macro redefinition" for this line in mingw.h:

#define _stati64(x,y) mingw_stat(x,y)

The reason is that as of MSVCR80.dll (distributed with MSVC 2005), the
original _stati64 family of functions was renamed to _stat32i64, and the
former function names became macros (pointing to the appropriate function
based on the definition of _USE_32BIT_TIME_T).

Defining _stati64 works on MinGW because MinGW by default compiles against
the MSVCRT.DLL that is part of Windows (i.e. _stati64 is a function rather
than a macro).

Note: MinGW *can* compile for newer MSVC runtime versions, and MSVC
apparently can also compile for the Windows MSVCRT.DLL via the DDK (see
http://www.syndicateofideas.com/posts/fighting-the-msvcrt-dll-hell ).

Remove the stat definitions from msvc.h, as they are not compiler related.

In mingw.h, determine the runtime version in use from the definitions of
_stati64 and _USE_32BIT_TIME_T, and define stat() accordingly.

This also fixes that stat() in MSVC builds still resolves to mingw_lstat()
instead of mingw_stat().
