328c6cb853 doc: promote "git switch"
The new command "git switch" is added to avoid the confusion of
one-command-do-all "git checkout" for new users. They are also helpful
to avoid ambiguation context.

For these reasons, promote it everywhere possible. This includes
documentation, suggestions/advice from other commands...

The "Checking out files" progress line in unpack-trees.c is also updated
to "Updating files" to be neutral to both git-checkout and git-switch.

c6342e0525 Doc/check-ref-format: clarify information about @{-N} syntax
When the N-th previous thing checked out syntax (@{-N}) is used
with '--branch' option of check-ref-format the result may not be
the name of a branch that currently exists or ever existed. This
is because @{-N} is used to refer to the N-th last checked out
"thing", which might be a commit object name if the previous check
out was a detached HEAD state; or a branch name, otherwise. The
documentation thus does a wrong thing by promoting it as the
"previous branch syntax".

State that @{-N} is the syntax for specifying "N-th last thing
checked out" and also state that the result of using @{-N} might
also result in an commit object name.

89dd32aedc check-ref-format doc: --branch validates and expands <branch>
"git check-ref-format --branch $name" feature was originally
introduced (and was advertised) as a way for scripts to take any
end-user supplied string (like "master", "@{-1}" etc.) and see if it
is usable when Git expects to see a branch name, and also obtain the
concrete branch name that the at-mark magic expands to.

Emphasize that "see if it is usable" role in the description and
clarify that the @{...} expansion only occurs when run from within a
repository.

cd377f45c9 refs: loosen restriction on wildcard "*" refspecs
Loosen restrictions on refspecs by allowing patterns that have a "*"
within a component instead of only as the whole component.

Remove the logic to accept a single "*" as a whole component from
check_refname_format(), and implement an extended form of that logic
in check_refname_component(). Pass the pointer to the flags argument
to the latter, as it has to clear REFNAME_REFSPEC_PATTERN bit when
it sees "*".

Teach check_refname_component() function to allow an asterisk "*"
only when REFNAME_REFSPEC_PATTERN is set in the flags, and drop the
bit after seeing a "*", to ensure that one side of a refspec
contains at most one asterisk.

This will allow us to accept refspecs such as `for/bar*:foo/baz*`.
Any refspec which functioned before shall continue functioning with
the new logic.

9ba89f484e Add new @ shortcut for HEAD
Typing 'HEAD' is tedious, especially when we can use '@' instead.

The reason for choosing '@' is that it follows naturally from the
ref@op syntax (e.g. HEAD@{u}), except we have no ref, and no
operation, and when we don't have those, it makes sens to assume
'HEAD'.

So now we can use 'git show @~1', and all that goody goodness.

Until now '@' was a valid name, but it conflicts with this idea, so
let's make it invalid. Probably very few people, if any, used this name.

This reverts commit cdfd94837b, as it
does not just apply to "@" (and forms with modifiers like @{u}
applied to it), but also affects e.g. "refs/heads/@/foo", which it
shouldn't.

The basic idea of giving a short-hand might be good, and the topic
can be retried later, but let's revert to avoid affecting existing
use cases for now for the upcoming release.

6cf378f0cb docs: stop using asciidoc no-inline-literal
In asciidoc 7, backticks like `foo` produced a typographic
effect, but did not otherwise affect the syntax. In asciidoc
8, backticks introduce an "inline literal" inside which markup
is not interpreted. To keep compatibility with existing
documents, asciidoc 8 has a "no-inline-literal" attribute to
keep the old behavior. We enabled this so that the
documentation could be built on either version.

It has been several years now, and asciidoc 7 is no longer
in wide use. We can now decide whether or not we want
inline literals on their own merits, which are:

  1. The source is much easier to read when the literal
contains punctuation. You can use `master~1` instead
     of `master{tilde}1`.

  2. They are less error-prone. Because of point (1), we
tend to make mistakes and forget the extra layer of
     quoting.

This patch removes the no-inline-literal attribute from the
Makefile and converts every use of backticks in the
documentation to an inline literal (they must be cleaned up,
or the example above would literally show "{tilde}" in the
output).

Problematic sites were found by grepping for '`.*[{\\]' and
examined and fixed manually. The results were then verified
by comparing the output of "html2text" on the set of
generated html pages. Doing so revealed that in addition to
making the source more readable, this patch fixes several
formatting bugs:

  - HTML rendering used the ellipsis character instead of
literal "..." in code examples (like "git log A...B")

  - some code examples used the right-arrow character
instead of '->' because they failed to quote

  - api-config.txt did not quote tilde, and the resulting
HTML contained a bogus snippet like:

      <tt></tt> foo <tt>bar</tt>

which caused some parsers to choke and omit whole
    sections of the page.

  - git-commit.txt confused ``foo`` (backticks inside a
    literal) with ``foo'' (matched double-quotes)

  - mentions of `A U Thor <author@example.com>` used to
erroneously auto-generate a mailto footnote for
    author@example.com

  - the description of --word-diff=plain incorrectly showed
the output as "[-removed-] and {added}", not "{+added+}".

  - using "prime" notation like:

commit `C` and its replacement `C'`

confused asciidoc into thinking that everything between
the first backtick and the final apostrophe were meant
    to be inside matched quotes

  - asciidoc got confused by the escaping of some of our
    asterisks. In particular,

      `credential.\*` and `credential.<url>.\*`

properly escaped the asterisk in the first case, but
literally passed through the backslash in the second
    case.

a40e6fb67a Change check_refname_format() to reject unnormalized refnames
Since much of the infrastructure does not work correctly with
unnormalized refnames, change check_refname_format() to reject them.

Similarly, change "git check-ref-format" to reject unnormalized
refnames by default. But add an option --normalize, which causes "git
check-ref-format" to normalize the refname before checking its format,
and print the normalized refname. This is exactly the behavior of the
old --print option, which is retained but deprecated.

e4ed6105ec git check-ref-format: add options --allow-onelevel and --refspec-pattern
Also add tests of the new options. (Actually, one big reason to add
the new options is to make it easy to test check_ref_format(), though
the options should also be useful to other scripts.)

Interpret the result of check_ref_format() based on which types of
refnames are allowed. However, because check_ref_format() can only
return a single value, one test case is still broken. Specifically,
the case "git check-ref-format --onelevel '*'" incorrectly succeeds
because check_ref_format() returns CHECK_REF_FORMAT_ONELEVEL for this
refname even though the refname is also CHECK_REF_FORMAT_WILDCARD.
The type of check that leads to this failure is used elsewhere in
"real" code and could lead to bugs; it will be fixed over the next few
commits.

cc1b8d8bc6 docs: don't talk about $GIT_DIR/refs/ everywhere
It is misleading to say that we pull refs from $GIT_DIR/refs/*, because we
may also consult the packed refs mechanism. These days we tend to treat
the "refs hierarchy" as more of an abstract namespace that happens to be
represented as $GIT_DIR/refs. At best, this is a minor inaccuracy, but at
worst it can confuse users who then look in $GIT_DIR/refs and find that it
is missing some of the refs they expected to see.

This patch drops most uses of "$GIT_DIR/refs/*", changing them into just
"refs/*", under the assumption that users can handle the concept of an
abstract refs namespace. There are a few things to note:

  - most cases just dropped the $GIT_DIR/ portion. But for cases where
that left _just_ the word "refs", I changed it to "refs/" to help
indicate that it was a hierarchy. I didn't do the same for longer
paths (e.g., "refs/heads" remained, instead of becoming
    "refs/heads/").

  - in some cases, no change was made, as the text was explicitly about
unpacked refs (e.g., the discussion in git-pack-refs).

  - In some cases it made sense instead to note the existence of packed
    refs (e.g., in check-ref-format and rev-parse).

0b444cdb19 Documentation: spell 'git cmd' without dash throughout
The documentation was quite inconsistent when spelling 'git cmd' if it
only refers to the program, not to some specific invocation syntax:
both 'git-cmd' and 'git cmd' spellings exist.

The current trend goes towards dashless forms, and there is precedent
in 647ac70 (git-svn.txt: stop using dash-form of commands.,
2009-07-07) to actively eliminate the dashed variants.

Replace 'git-cmd' with 'git cmd' throughout, except where git-shell,
git-cvsserver, git-upload-pack, git-receive-pack, and
git-upload-archive are concerned, because those really live in the
$PATH.

3e262b95c5 Don't permit ref/branch names to end with ".lock"
We already skip over loose refs under $GIT_DIR/refs if the name
ends with ".lock", so creating a branch named "foo.lock" will not
appear in the output of "git branch", "git for-each-ref", nor will
its commit be considered reachable by "git rev-list --all".

In the latter case this is especially evil, as it may cause
repository corruption when objects reachable only through such a
ref are deleted by "git prune".

It should be reasonably safe to deny use of ".lock" as a ref suffix.
In prior versions of Git such branches would be "phantom branches";
you can create it, but you can't see it in "git branch" output.

cbdffe4093 check_ref_format(): tighten refname rules
This changes the rules for refnames to forbid:

 (1) a refname that contains "@{" in it.

Some people and foreign SCM converter may have named their branches
as frotz@24 and we still want to keep supporting it.

However, "git branch frotz@{24}" is a disaster. It cannot even
checked out because "git checkout frotz@{24}" will interpret it as
"detach the HEAD at twenty-fourth reflog entry of the frotz branch".

 (2) a refname that ends with a dot.

We already reject a path component that begins with a dot, primarily
to avoid ambiguous range interpretation. If we allowed ".B" as a
valid ref, it is unclear if "A...B" means "in dot-B but not in A" or
"either in A or B but not in both".

But for this to be complete, we need also to forbid "A." to avoid "in
B but not in A-dot". This was not a problem in the original range
notation, but we should have added this restriction when three-dot
     notation was introduced.

Unlike "no dot at the beginning of any path component" rule, this
rule does not have to be "no dot at the end of any path component",
because you cannot abbreviate the tail end away, similar to you can
     say "dot-B" to mean "refs/heads/dot-B".

For these reasons, it is not likely people created branches with these
names on purpose, but we have allowed such names to be used for quite some
time, and it is possible that people created such branches by mistake or
by accident.

To help people with branches with such unfortunate names to recover,
we still allow "branch -d 'bad.'" to delete such branches, and also allow
"branch -m bad. good" to rename them.

483bc4f045 Documentation formatting and cleanup
Following what appears to be the predominant style, format
names of commands and commandlines both as `teletype text`.

While we're at it, add articles ("a" and "the") in some
places, italicize the name of the command in the manual page
synopsis line, and add a comma or two where it seems appropriate.

b1889c36d8 Documentation: be consistent about "git-" versus "git "
Since the git-* commands are not installed in $(bindir), using
"git-command <parameters>" in examples in the documentation is
not a good idea. On the other hand, it is nice to be able to
refer to each command using one hyphenated word. (There is no
escaping it, anyway: man page names cannot have spaces in them.)

This patch retains the dash in naming an operation, command,
program, process, or action. Complete command lines that can
be entered at a shell (i.e., without options omitted) are
made to use the dashless form.

The changes consist only of replacing some spaces with hyphens
and vice versa. After a "s/ /-/g", the unpatched and patched
versions are identical.

9e1f0a85c6 documentation: move git(7) to git(1)
As the "git" man page describes the "git" command at the end-user
level, it seems better to move it to man section 1.

5162e69732 Documentation: rename gitlink macro to linkgit
Between AsciiDoc 8.2.2 and 8.2.3, the following change was made to the stock
Asciidoc configuration:

@@ -149,7 +153,10 @@
 # Inline macros.
 # Backslash prefix required for escape processing.
 # (?s) re flag for line spanning.
-(?su)[\\]?(?P<name>\w(\w|-)*?):(?P<target>\S*?)(\[(?P<attrlist>.*?)\])=
+
+# Explicit so they can be nested.
+(?su)[\\]?(?P<name>(http|https|ftp|file|mailto|callto|image|link)):(?P<target>\S*?)(\[(?P<attrlist>.*?)\])=
+
 # Anchor: [[[id]]]. Bibliographic anchor.
 (?su)[\\]?\[\[\[(?P<attrlist>[\w][\w-]*?)\]\]\]=anchor3
 # Anchor: [[id,xreflabel]]

This default regex now matches explicit values, and unfortunately in this
case gitlink was being matched by just 'link', causing the wrong inline
macro template to be applied. By renaming the macro, we can avoid being
matched by the wrong regex.

87a56cd3b1 Elaborate on why ':' is a bad idea in a ref name.
With the new cat-file syntax of 'v1.3.3:refs.c' we should mention
it as part of the reason why ':' is not permitted in a ref name.
