d22245a2e3 hashmap_entry_init takes "struct hashmap_entry *"
C compilers do type checking to make life easier for us.  So
rely on that and update all hashmap_entry_init callers to take
"struct hashmap_entry *" to avoid future bugs while improving
safety and readability.

be5d88e112 test-tool run-command: learn to run (parts of) the testsuite
Git for Windows jumps through hoops to provide a development environment
that allows to build Git and to run its test suite. To that end, an
entire MSYS2 system, including GNU make and GCC is offered as "the Git
for Windows SDK". It does come at a price: an initial download of said
SDK weighs in with several hundreds of megabytes, and the unpacked SDK
occupies ~2GB of disk space.

A much more native development environment on Windows is Visual Studio.
To help contributors use that environment, we already have a Makefile
target `vcxproj` that generates a commit with project files (and other
generated files), and Git for Windows' `vs/master` branch is
continuously re-generated using that target.

The idea is to allow building Git in Visual Studio, and to run
individual tests using a Portable Git.

The one missing thing is a way to run the entire test suite: neither
`make` nor `prove` are required to run Git, therefore Git for Windows
does not support those commands in the Portable Git.

To help with that, add a simple test helper that exercises the
`run_processes_parallel()` function to allow for running test scripts in
parallel (which is really necessary, especially on Windows, as Git's
test suite takes such a long time to run).

This will also come in handy for the upcoming change to our Azure
Pipeline: we will use this helper in a Portable Git to test the Visual
Studio build of Git.

27ea41c0b4 t/helper: ignore only executable files
This patch conceptually reverts 44103f4197 (t/helper: ignore
everything but sources, 2017-12-12).  Back in those days we did have a
lot of separate test helper executables under 't/helper', and its
'.gitignore' did get out of sync every once in a while.

Since then, however, most of those separate executables were
integrated into a single 'test-tool' command [1], and new test helpers
are added as new subcommands, so the chances of that '.gitignore'
getting out of sync again are much lower.  And even if a contributor
were not careful enough and submits a patch that adds a new executable
under 't/helper' but forgets to update '.gitignore' accordingly, our
CI builds would catch it in a timely manner [2].

Ignoring everything but sources has the drawback that building an
older version of Git (e.g. during bisecting) creates all those
executables, and after going back to e.g. current 'master' the usual
cleanup commands like 'make clean' or 'git clean -fd' don't remove
them (the former doesn't know about them, and the latter doesn't
remove ignored files).

So let's ignore only the executable files under 't/helper/, i.e.
'test-tool' and the three other remaining executables that could not
be integrated into 'test-tool' (no need to ignore object files, as
they are already ignored by our toplevel '.gitignore').

2bb74b53a4 Test the progress display
'progress.c' has seen a few fixes recently [1], and, unfortunately,
some of those fixes required further fixes [2].  It seems it's time to
have a few tests focusing on the subtleties of the progress display.

Add the 'test-tool progress' subcommand to help testing the progress
display, reading instructions from standard input and turning them
into calls to the display_progress() and display_throughput()
functions with the given parameters.

The progress display is, however, critically dependent on timing,
because it's only updated once every second or, if the toal is known
in advance, every 1%, and there is the throughput rate as well.  These
make the progress display far too undeterministic for testing as-is.
To address this, add a few testing-specific variables and functions to
'progress.c', allowing the the new test helper to:

  - Disable the triggered-every-second SIGALRM and set the
    'progress_update' flag explicitly based in the input instructions.
    This way the progress line will be updated deterministically when
    the test wants it to be updated.

  - Specify the time elapsed since start_progress() to make the
    throughput rate calculations deterministic.

Add the new test script 't0500-progress-display.sh' to check a few
simple cases with and without throughput, and that a shorter progress
line properly covers up the previously displayed line in different
situations.

29f4332e66 Quit passing 'now' to date code
Commit b841d4ff43 (Add `human` format to test-tool, 2019-01-28) added
a get_time() function which allows $GIT_TEST_DATE_NOW in the
environment to override the current time. So we no longer need to
interpret that variable in cmd__date().

Therefore, we can stop passing the "now" parameter down through the
date functions, since nobody uses them. Note that we do need to make
sure all of the previous callers that took a "now" parameter are
correctly using get_time().

7e6b96c73b test-read-cache: drop namelen variable
Early in the function we set "namelen = strlen(name)" if "name" is
non-NULL. Later, we use "namelen" only if "name" is non-NULL. However,
it's hard to immediately see this, and it seems to confuse gcc 9.2.1
(with "-flto" interestingly, though all of the involved logic is in
inline functions; it also triggers when building with ASan).

Let's simplify the code and remove the variable entirely. There's only
one use of namelen anyway, so we can just call strlen() then. It's true
this is in a loop, so we might execute strlen() more often. But:

  - this is test code that only ever loops twice in our test suite (we
    do loop 1000 times in a t/perf test, but without using this option).

  - a decent compiler ought to be able to hoist that out of the loop
    anyway (though I wouldn't count on gcc 9.2.1 doing so!)

A few tests printed 'errno' as an integer and compared with
hardcoded integers; this is obviously not portable.

A two things to note are:

 - the string obtained by strerror() is not portable, and cannot be
   used for the purpose of these tests.

 - there unfortunately isn't a portable way to map error numbers to
   error names.

As we only care about a few selected errors, just map the error
number to the name before emitting for comparison.

fa1da7d2ee dir-iterator: add flags parameter to dir_iterator_begin
Add the possibility of giving flags to dir_iterator_begin to initialize
a dir-iterator with special options.

Currently possible flags are:
- DIR_ITERATOR_PEDANTIC, which makes dir_iterator_advance abort
immediately in the case of an error, instead of keep looking for the
next valid entry;
- DIR_ITERATOR_FOLLOW_SYMLINKS, which makes the iterator follow
symlinks and include linked directories' contents in the iteration.

These new flags will be used in a subsequent patch.

Also add tests for the flags' usage and adjust refs/files-backend.c to
the new dir_iterator_begin signature.

3012397e03 dir-iterator: refactor state machine model
dir_iterator_advance() is a large function with two nested loops. Let's
improve its readability factoring out three functions and simplifying
its mechanics. The refactored model will no longer depend on
level.initialized and level.dir_state to keep track of the iteration
state and will perform on a single loop.

Also, dir_iterator_begin() currently does not check if the given string
represents a valid directory path. Since the refactored model will have
to stat() the given path at initialization, let's also check for this
kind of error and make dir_iterator_begin() return NULL, on failures,
with errno appropriately set. And add tests for this new behavior.

Improve documentation at dir-iteration.h and code comments at
dir-iterator.c to reflect the changes and eliminate possible
ambiguities.

Finally, adjust refs/files-backend.c to check for now possible
dir_iterator_begin() failures.

0ebbcf70e6 object: convert lookup_unknown_object() to use object_id
There are no callers left of lookup_unknown_object() that aren't just
passing us the "hash" member of a "struct object_id". Let's take the
whole struct, which gets us closer to removing all raw sha1 variables.
It also matches the existing conversions of lookup_blob(), etc.

The conversions of callers were done by hand, but they're all mechanical
one-liners.

a1100d2cee test-hashmap: remove 'hash' command
If hashes like strhash() are updated, for example to use a different
hash algorithm, we should not have to be updating t0011 to change out
the hashes.

As long as hashmap can store and retrieve values, and that it performs
well, we should not care what are the values of the hashes. Let's just
focus on the externally visible behavior instead.

dc76852df2 fsmonitor: demonstrate that it is not refreshed after discard_index()
This one is tricky.

When `core.fsmonitor` is set, a `refresh_index()` will not perform a
full scan of files that might be modified, but will query the fsmonitor
and refresh only the ones that have been actually touched.

Due to implementation details, the fsmonitor is queried in
`refresh_cache_ent()`, but of course it only has to be queried once, so
we set a flag when we did that. But when the index was discarded, we did
not re-set that flag.

So far, this is only covered by our test suite when running with
GIT_TEST_FSMONITOR=$PWD/t7519/fsmonitor-all, and only due to the way the
built-in stash interacts with the recursive merge machinery.

Let's introduce a straight-forward regression test for this.

We simply extend the "read & discard index" loop in `test-tool
read-cache` to optionally refresh the index, report on a given file's
status, and then modify that file. Due to the bug described above, only
the first refresh will actually query the fsmonitor; subsequent loop
iterations will not.

This problem was reported by Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason.

5c387428f1 parse-options: don't emit "ambiguous option" for aliases
Change the option parsing machinery so that e.g. "clone --recurs ..."
doesn't error out because "clone" understands both "--recursive" and
"--recurse-submodules" to mean the same thing.

Initially "clone" just understood --recursive until the
--recurses-submodules alias was added in ccdd3da652 ("clone: Add the
--recurse-submodules option as alias for --recursive",
2010-11-04). Since bb62e0a99f ("clone: teach --recurse-submodules to
optionally take a pathspec", 2017-03-17) the longer form has been
promoted to the default.

But due to the way the options parsing machinery works this resulted
in the rather absurd situation of:

    $ git clone --recurs [...]
    error: ambiguous option: recurs (could be --recursive or --recurse-submodules)

Add OPT_ALIAS() to express this link between two or more options and use
it in git-clone. Multiple aliases of an option could be written as

    OPT_ALIAS(0, "alias1", "original-name"),
    OPT_ALIAS(0, "alias2", "original-name"),
    ...

The current implementation is not exactly optimal in this case. But we
can optimize it when it becomes a problem. So far we don't even have two
aliases of any option.

A big chunk of code is actually from Junio C Hamano.

b7ce24d095 Turn git serve into a test helper
The `git serve` built-in was introduced in ed10cb952d (serve:
introduce git-serve, 2018-03-15) as a backend to serve Git protocol v2,
probably originally intended to be spawned by `git upload-pack`.

However, in the version that the protocol v2 patches made it into core
Git, `git upload-pack` calls the `serve()` function directly instead of
spawning `git serve`; The only reason in life for `git serve` to survive
as a built-in command is to provide a way to test the protocol v2
functionality.

Meaning that it does not even have to be a built-in that is installed
with end-user facing Git installations, but it can be a test helper
instead.

Let's make it so.

6ea18fffb0 test-tool: handle the -C <directory> option just like git
In preparation for moving `git serve` into `test-tool` (because it
really is only used by the test suite), we teach the `test-tool` the
useful trick to change the working directory before running the test
command, which will avoid introducing subshells in the test code.

73a5faf017 test-prio-queue: use xmalloc
test-prio-queue.c doesn't check the return value of malloc, and could
segfault.

It's unlikely for this to matter in practice; it's a small allocation,
and this code isn't even installed alongside the rest of Git. But let's
use xmalloc(), which makes auditing for other accidental uses of bare
malloc() easier.

1a85b49b87 parse-options: make OPT_ARGUMENT() more useful
`OPT_ARGUMENT()` is intended to keep the specified long option in `argv`
and not to do anything else.

However, it would make a lot of sense for the caller to know whether
this option was seen at all or not. For example, we want to teach `git
difftool` to work outside of any Git worktree, but only when
`--no-index` was specified.

Note: nothing in Git uses OPT_ARGUMENT(). Even worse, looking through
the commit history, one can easily see that nothing even
ever used it, apart from the regression test.

So not only do we make `OPT_ARGUMENT()` more useful, we are also about
to introduce its first real user!

ee4512ed48 trace2: create new combined trace facility
Create a new unified tracing facility for git.  The eventual intent is to
replace the current trace_printf* and trace_performance* routines with a
unified set of git_trace2* routines.

In addition to the usual printf-style API, trace2 provides higer-level
event verbs with fixed-fields allowing structured data to be written.
This makes post-processing and analysis easier for external tools.

Trace2 defines 3 output targets.  These are set using the environment
variables "GIT_TR2", "GIT_TR2_PERF", and "GIT_TR2_EVENT".  These may be
set to "1" or to an absolute pathname (just like the current GIT_TRACE).

* GIT_TR2 is intended to be a replacement for GIT_TRACE and logs command
  summary data.

* GIT_TR2_PERF is intended as a replacement for GIT_TRACE_PERFORMANCE.
  It extends the output with columns for the command process, thread,

* GIT_TR2_EVENT is a new structured format. It writes event data as a

d5cfd142ec tests: teach the test-tool to generate NUL bytes and use it
In cc95bc2025 (t5562: replace /dev/zero with a pipe from
generate_zero_bytes, 2019-02-09), we replaced usage of /dev/zero (which
is not available on NonStop, apparently) by a Perl script snippet to
generate NUL bytes.

Sadly, it does not seem to work on NonStop, as t5562 reportedly hangs.

Worse, this also hangs in the Ubuntu 16.04 agents of the CI builds on
Azure Pipelines: for some reason, the Perl script snippet that is run
via `generate_zero_bytes` in t5562's 'CONTENT_LENGTH overflow ssite_t'
test case tries to write out an infinite amount of NUL bytes unless a
broken pipe is encountered, that snippet never encounters the broken
pipe, and keeps going until the build times out.

Oddly enough, this does not reproduce on the Windows and macOS agents,
nor in a local Ubuntu 18.04.

This developer tried for a day to figure out the exact circumstances
under which this hang happens, to no avail, the details remain a
mystery.

In the end, though, what counts is that this here change incidentally
fixes that hang (maybe also on NonStop?). Even more positively, it gets
rid of yet another unnecessary Perl invocation.

ba285a712d test-date: drop unused parameter to getnanos()
The getnanos() helper always gets the current time from our
getnanotime() facility. The caller cannot override it via TEST_DATE_NOW,
and hence we simply ignore the "now" parameter to the function. Let's
remove it, as it may mislead callers into thinking it does something.

b841d4ff43 Add human format to test-tool
Add the human format support to the test tool so that
GIT_TEST_DATE_NOW can be used to specify the current time.

The get_time() helper function was created and and checks the
GIT_TEST_DATE_NOW environment variable.  If GIT_TEST_DATE_NOW is set,
then that date is used instead of the date returned by by
gettimeofday().

All calls to gettimeofday() were replaced by calls to get_time().

Renamed occurances of TEST_DATE_NOW to GIT_TEST_DATE_NOW since the
variable is now used in the get binary and not just in the test-tool.

b819f1d2ce ci: parallelize testing on Windows
The fact that Git's test suite is implemented in Unix shell script that
is as portable as we can muster, combined with the fact that Unix shell
scripting is foreign to Windows (and therefore has to be emulated),
results in pretty abysmal speed of the test suite on that platform, for
pretty much no other reason than that language choice.

For comparison: while the Linux build & test is typically done within
about 8 minutes, the Windows build & test typically lasts about 80
minutes in Azure Pipelines.

To help with that, let's use the Azure Pipeline feature where you can
parallelize jobs, make jobs depend on each other, and pass artifacts
between them.

The tests are distributed using the following heuristic: listing all
test scripts ordered by size in descending order (as a cheap way to
estimate the overall run time), every Nth script is run (where N is the
total number of parallel jobs), starting at the index corresponding to
the parallel job. This slicing is performed by a new function that is
added to the `test-tool`.

To optimize the overall runtime of the entire Pipeline, we need to move
the Windows jobs to the beginning (otherwise there would be a very
decent chance for the Pipeline to be run only the Windows build, while
all the parallel Windows test jobs wait for this single one).

We use Azure Pipelines Artifacts for both the minimal Git for Windows
SDK as well as the built executables, as deduplication and caching close
to the agents makes that really fast. For comparison: while downloading
and unpacking the minimal Git for Windows SDK via PowerShell takes only
one minute (down from anywhere between 2.5 to 7 when using a shallow
clone), uploading it as Pipeline Artifact takes less than 30s and
downloading and unpacking less than 20s (sometimes even as little as
only twelve seconds).

af9912efaf tests: include detailed trace logs with --write-junit-xml upon failure
The JUnit XML format lends itself to be presented in a powerful UI,
where you can drill down to the information you are interested in very
quickly.

For test failures, this usually means that you want to see the detailed
trace of the failing tests.

With Travis CI, we passed the `--verbose-log` option to get those
traces. However, that seems excessive, as we do not need/use the logs in
almost all of those cases: only when a test fails do we have a way to
include the trace.

So let's do something different when using Azure DevOps: let's run all
the tests with `--quiet` first, and only if a failure is encountered,
try to trace the commands as they are executed.

Of course, we cannot turn on `--verbose-log` after the fact. So let's
just re-run the test with all the same options, adding `--verbose-log`.
And then munging the output file into the JUnit XML on the fly.

Note: there is an off chance that re-running the test in verbose mode
"fixes" the failures (and this does happen from time to time!). That is
a possibility we should be able to live with. Ideally, we would label
this as "Passed upon rerun", and Azure Pipelines even know about that
outcome, but it is not available when using the JUnit XML format for
now:

on Windows, where that means spinning up a full POSIX emulation layer,
AKA the MSYS2 runtime) just to tell how large a given file is.

This command will also be used over the next commits, to allow for
cutting out individual test cases' verbose log from the file generated
via --verbose-log.

4419de9164 test-date: add a subcommand to measure times in shell scripts
In the next commit, we want to teach Git's test suite to optionally
output test results in JUnit-style .xml files. These files contain
information about the time spent. So we need a way to measure time.

While we could use `date +%s` for that, this will give us only seconds,
i.e. very coarse-grained timings.

GNU `date` supports `date +%s.%N` (i.e. nanosecond-precision output),
but there is no equivalent in BSD `date` (read: on macOS, we would not
be able to obtain precise timings).

So let's introduce `test-tool date getnanos`, with an optional start
time, that outputs preciser values. Note that this might not actually
give us nanosecond precision on some platforms, but it will give us as
precise information as possible, without the portability issues of shell
commands.

Granted, it is a bit pointless to try measuring times accurately in
shell scripts, certainly to nanosecond precision. But it is better than
second-granularity.

The timestamp we receive is in epoch time, so there's no need for a
timezone parameter to interpret it. The matching show_date() uses "tz"
to show dates in author local time, but relative dates show only the
absolute time difference. The author's location is irrelevant, barring
relativistic effects from using Git close to the speed of light.

dade47c06c (commit-graph: add repo arg to graph readers, 2018-07-11)
brought more independence from the_repository to the commit graph, however
it was not completely independent of the_repository, as the previous
patches show.

To ensure we're not accessing the_repository by accident, we'd ideally
assign NULL to the_repository to trigger a segfault on access.

We currently have a temporary hack in cache.h, which relies on
the_hash_algo (which is a short form of the_repository->hash_algo) to
be set, so we cannot do that. The next best thing is to set all fields of
the_repository to 0, so any accidental access is more likely to be found.

When constructing a struct repository for a submodule for some revision
of the superproject where the submodule is not contained in the index,
it may not be present in the working tree currently either. In that
situation giving a 'path' argument is not useful. Upgrade the
repo_submodule_init function to take a struct submodule instead.
The submodule struct can be obtained via submodule_from_{path, name} or
an artificial submodule struct can be passed in.

While we are at it, rename the repository struct in the repo_submodule_init
function, which is to be initialized, to a name that is not confused with
the struct submodule as easily. Perform such renames in similar functions
as well.

Also move its documentation into the header file.

13eeedb5d1 Add a base implementation of SHA-256 support
SHA-1 is weak and we need to transition to a new hash function.  For
some time, we have referred to this new function as NewHash.  Recently,
we decided to pick SHA-256 as NewHash.  The reasons behind the choice of
SHA-256 are outlined in the thread starting at [1] and in the commit
history for the hash function transition document.

Add a basic implementation of SHA-256 based off libtomcrypt, which is in
the public domain.  Optimize it and restructure it to meet our coding
standards.  Pull in the update and final functions from the SHA-1 block
implementation, as we know these function correctly with all compilers.
This implementation is slower than SHA-1, but more performant
implementations will be introduced in future commits.

Wire up SHA-256 in the list of hash algorithms, and add a test that the
algorithm works correctly.

Note that with this patch, it is still not possible to switch to using
SHA-256 in Git.  Additional patches are needed to prepare the code to
handle a larger hash algorithm and further test fixes are needed.

When we define a parse-options callback, the flags we put in the option
struct must match what the callback expects. For example, a callback
which does not handle the "unset" parameter should only be used with
PARSE_OPT_NONEG. But since the callback and the option struct are not
defined next to each other, it's easy to get this wrong (as earlier
patches in this series show).

Fortunately, the compiler can help us here: compiling with
-Wunused-parameters can show us which callbacks ignore their "unset"
parameters (and likewise, ones that ignore "arg" expect to be triggered
with PARSE_OPT_NOARG).

But after we've inspected a callback and determined that all of its
callers use the right flags, what do we do next? We'd like to silence
the compiler warning, but do so in a way that will catch any wrong calls
in the future.

We can do that by actually checking those variables and asserting that
they match our expectations. Because this is such a common pattern,
we'll introduce some helper macros. The resulting messages aren't
as descriptive as we could make them, but the file/line information from
BUG() is enough to identify the problem (and anyway, the point is that
these should never be seen).

Each of the annotated callbacks in this patch triggers
-Wunused-parameters, and was manually inspected to make sure all callers
use the correct options (so none of these BUGs should be triggerable).

0a8a16ade6 parse-options: drop OPT_DATE()
There are no users of OPT_DATE except for test-parse-options; its
only caller went away in 27ec394a97 (prune: introduce OPT_EXPIRY_DATE()
and use it, 2013-04-25).

It also has a bug: it does not specify PARSE_OPT_NONEG, but its callback
does not respect the "unset" flag, and will feed NULL to approxidate()
and segfault. Probably this should be marked with NONEG, or the callback
should set the timestamp to some sentinel value (e.g,. "0", or
"(time_t)-1").

But since there are no callers, deleting it means we don't even have to
think about what the right behavior should be.

The get_reachable_subset() method returns the list of commits in
the 'to' array that are reachable from at least one commit in the
'from' array. Add tests that check this method works in a few
cases:

1. All commits in the 'to' list are reachable. This exercises the
   early-termination condition.

2. Some commits in the 'to' list are reachable. This exercises the
   loop-termination condition.

3. No commits in the 'to' list are reachable. This exercises the
   NULL return condition.

aca4240f6a prio-queue: add 'peek' operation
When consuming a priority queue, it can be convenient to inspect
the next object that will be dequeued without actually dequeueing
it. Our existing library did not have such a 'peek' operation, so
add it as prio_queue_peek().

Add a reference-level comparison in t/helper/test-prio-queue.c
so this method is exercised by t0009-prio-queue.sh. Further, add
a test that checks the behavior when the compare function is NULL
(i.e. the queue becomes a stack).

2b1257e463 t/helper: add test-submodule-nested-repo-config
Add a test tool to exercise config_from_gitmodules(), in particular for
the case of nested submodules.

Add also a test to document that reading the submoudles config of nested
submodules does not work yet when the .gitmodules file is not in the
working tree but it still in the index.

This is because the git API does not always make it possible access the
object store  of an arbitrary repository (see get_oid() usage in
config_from_gitmodules()).

When this git limitation gets fixed the aforementioned use case will be
supported too.

The can_all_from_reach_with_flag() algorithm was refactored in 4fbcca4e
"commit-reach: make can_all_from_reach... linear" but incorrectly
assumed that all objects provided were commits. During a fetch
negotiation, ok_to_give_up() in upload-pack.c may provide unpeeled tags
to the 'from' array. The current code creates a segfault.

Add a direct call to can_all_from_reach_with_flag() in 'test-tool reach'
and add a test in t6600-test-reach.sh that demonstrates this segfault.

Correct the issue by peeling tags when investigating the initial list
of objects in the 'from' array.

d65930c5a9 test-delta: read input into a heap buffer
We currently read the input to test-delta by mmap()-ing it.
However, memory-checking tools like valgrind and ASan are
less able to detect reads/writes past the end of an mmap'd
buffer, because the OS is likely to give us extra bytes to
pad out the final page size. So instead, let's read into a
heap buffer.

As a bonus, this also makes it possible to write tests with
empty bases, as mmap() will complain about a zero-length
map.

This is based on a patch by Jann Horn <jannh@google.com>
which actually aligned the data at the end of a page, and
followed it with another page marked with mprotect(). That
would detect problems even without a tool like ASan, but it
was significantly more complex and may have introduced
portability problems. By comparison, this approach pushes
the complexity onto existing memory-checking tools.

Note that this could be done even more simply by using
strbuf_read_file(), but that would defeat the purpose:
strbufs generally overallocate (and at the very least
include a trailing NUL which we do not care about), which
would defeat most memory checkers.

9001dc2a74 convert "oidcmp() != 0" to "!oideq()"
This is the flip side of the previous two patches: checking
for a non-zero oidcmp() can be more strictly expressed as
inequality. Like those patches, we write "!= 0" in the
coccinelle transformation, which covers by isomorphism the
more common:

  if (oidcmp(E1, E2))

As with the previous two patches, this patch can be achieved
almost entirely by running "make coccicheck"; the only
differences are manual line-wrap fixes to match the original
code.

There is one thing to note for anybody replicating this,
though: coccinelle 1.0.4 seems to miss the case in
builtin/tag.c, even though it's basically the same as all
the others. Running with 1.0.7 does catch this, so
presumably it's just a coccinelle bug that was fixed in the
interim.

2cf489a3bf multi-pack-index: store local property
A pack-file is 'local' if it is stored within the usual object
directory. If it is stored in an alternate, it is non-local.

Pack-files are stored using a 'pack_local' member in the packed_git
struct. Add a similar 'local' member to the multi_pack_index struct
and 'local' parameters to the methods that load and prepare multi-
pack-indexes.

1fee124257 test-reach: test commit_contains
The commit_contains method has two modes which depend on the given
ref_filter struct. We have the "normal" algorithm (which is also the
typically-slow operation) and the "tag" algorithm. This difference is
essentially what changes performance for 'git branch --contains' versus
'git tag --contains'. There are thoughts that the data shapes used by
these two applications justify the different implementations.

Create tests using 'test-tool reach commit_contains [--tag]' to cover
both methods.

1792bc1250 test-reach: test can_all_from_reach_with_flags
The can_all_from_reach_with_flags method is used by ok_to_give_up in
upload-pack.c to see if we have done enough negotiation during a fetch.
This method is intentionally created to preserve state between calls to
assist with stateful negotiation, such as over SSH.

To make this method testable, add a new can_all_from_reach method that
does the initial setup and final tear-down. We will later use this
method in production code. Call the method from 'test-tool reach' for
now.

Since this is a many-to-many reachability query, add a new type of input
to the 'test-tool reach' input format. Lines "Y:<committish>" create a
list of commits to be the reachability targets from the commits in the
'X' list. In the context of fetch negotiation, the 'X' commits are the
'want' commits and the 'Y' commits are the 'have' commits.

The get_merge_bases_many method returns a list of merge bases for a
single commit (A) against a list of commits (X). Some care is needed in
constructing the expected behavior because the result is not the
expected merge-base for an octopus merge with those parents but instead
the set of maximal commits that are reachable from A and at least one of
the commits in X.

Add get_merge_bases_many to 'test-tool reach' and create a test that
demonstrates that this output returns multiple results. Specifically, we
select a list of three commits such that we output two commits that are
reachable from one of the first two, respectively, and none are
reachable from the third.

ab176ac4ae test-reach: create new test tool for ref_newer
As we prepare to change the behavior of the algorithms in
commit-reach.c, create a new test-tool subcommand 'reach' to test these
methods on interesting commit-graph shapes.

To use the new test-tool, use 'test-tool reach <method>' and provide
input to stdin that describes the inputs to the method. Currently, we
only implement the ref_newer method, which requires two commits. Use
lines "A:<committish>" and "B:<committish>" for the two inputs. We will
expand this input later to accommodate methods that take lists of
commits.

The test t6600-test-reach.sh creates a repo whose commits form a
two-dimensional grid. This grid makes it easy for us to determine
reachability because commit-A-B can reach commit-X-Y if and only if A is
at least X and B is at least Y. This helps create interesting test cases
for each result of the methods in commit-reach.c.

We test all methods in three different states of the commit-graph file:

662148c435 midx: write object offsets
The final pair of chunks for the multi-pack-index file stores the object
offsets. We default to using 32-bit offsets as in the pack-index version
1 format, but if there exists an offset larger than 32-bits, we use a
trick similar to the pack-index version 2 format by storing all offsets
at least 2^31 in a 64-bit table; we use the 32-bit table to point into
that 64-bit table as necessary.

We only store these 64-bit offsets if necessary, so create a test that
manipulates a version 2 pack-index to fake a large offset. This allows
us to test that the large offset table is created, but the data does not
match the actual packfile offsets. The multi-pack-index offset does match
the (corrupted) pack-index offset, so a future feature will compare these
offsets during a 'verify' step.

32f3c541e3 multi-pack-index: write pack names in chunk
The multi-pack-index needs to track which packfiles it indexes. Store
these in our first required chunk. Since filenames are not well
structured, add padding to keep good alignment in later chunks.

Modify the 'git multi-pack-index read' subcommand to output the
existence of the pack-file name chunk. Modify t5319-multi-pack-index.sh
to reflect this new output and the new expected number of chunks.

Defense in depth: A pattern we are using in the multi-pack-index feature
is to verify the data as we write it. We want to ensure we never write
invalid data to the multi-pack-index. There are many checks that verify
that the values we are writing fit the format definitions. This mainly
helps developers while working on the feature, but it can also identify
issues that only appear when dealing with very large data sets. These
large sets are hard to encode into test cases.

Add a struct repository argument to the functions in commit-graph.h that
read the commit graph. (This commit does not affect functions that write
commit graphs.)

Because the commit graph functions can now read the commit graph of any
repository, the global variable core_commit_graph has been removed.
Instead, the config option core.commitGraph is now read on the first
time in a repository that a commit is attempted to be parsed using its
commit graph.

This commit includes a test that exercises the functionality on an
arbitrary repository that is not the_repository.

75459410ed json_writer: new routines to create JSON data
Add "struct json_writer" and a series of jw_ routines to compose JSON
data into a string buffer.  The resulting string may then be printed by
commands wanting to support a JSON-like output format.

The json_writer is limited to correctly formatting structured data for
output.  It does not attempt to build an object model of the JSON data.

We say "JSON-like" because we do not enforce the Unicode (usually UTF-8)
requirement on string fields.  Internally, Git does not necessarily have
Unicode/UTF-8 data for most fields, so it is currently unclear the best
way to enforce that requirement.  For example, on Linux pathnames can
contain arbitrary 8-bit character data, so a command like "status" would
not know how to encode the reported pathnames.  We may want to revisit
this (or double encode such strings) in the future.

5a06a20e0c handle lower case drive letters on Windows
On Windows, if a tool calls SetCurrentDirectory with a lower case drive
letter, the subsequent call to GetCurrentDirectory will return the same
lower case drive letter. Powershell, for example, does not normalize the
path. If that happens, test-drop-caches will error out as it does not
correctly to handle lower case drive letters.

0fa5a2ed8d lock_file: move static locks into functions
Placing `struct lock_file`s on the stack used to be a bad idea, because
the temp- and lockfile-machinery would keep a pointer into the struct.
But after 076aa2cbd (tempfile: auto-allocate tempfiles on heap,
2017-09-05), we can safely have lockfiles on the stack. (This applies
even if a user returns early, leaving a locked lock behind.)

Each of these `struct lock_file`s is used from within a single function.
Move them into the respective functions to make the scope clearer and
drop the staticness.

For good measure, I have inspected these sites and come to believe that
they always release the lock, with the possible exception of bailing out
using `die()` or `exit()` or by returning from a `cmd_foo()`.

As pointed out by Jeff King, it would be bad if someone held on to a
`struct lock_file *` for some reason. After some grepping, I agree with
his findings: no-one appears to be doing that.

After this commit, the remaining occurrences of "static struct
lock_file" are locks that are used from within different functions. That
is, they need to remain static. (Short of more intrusive changes like
passing around pointers to non-static locks.)

033abf97fc Replace all die("BUG: ...") calls by BUG() ones
In d8193743e0 (usage.c: add BUG() function, 2017-05-12), a new macro
was introduced to use for reporting bugs instead of die(). It was then
subsequently used to convert one single caller in 588a538ae5
(setup_git_env: convert die("BUG") to BUG(), 2017-05-12).

The cover letter of the patch series containing this patch
(cf 20170513032414.mfrwabt4hovujde2@sigill.intra.peff.net) is not
terribly clear why only one call site was converted, or what the plan
is for other, similar calls to die() to report bugs.

Let's just convert all remaining ones in one fell swoop.

This trick was performed by this invocation:

a86303cb5d test-tool: help verifying BUG() code paths
When we call BUG(), we signal via SIGABRT that something bad happened,
dumping cores if so configured. In some setups these coredumps are
redirected to some central place such as /proc/sys/kernel/core_pattern,
which is a good thing.

However, when we try to verify in our test suite that bugs are caught in
certain code paths, we do *not* want to clutter such a central place
with unnecessary coredumps.

So let's special-case the test helpers (which we use to verify such code
paths) so that the BUG() calls will *not* call abort() but exit with a
special-purpose exit code instead.

Compared to 'test-chmtime -v +0 file' which prints the mtime and
and the file name, 'test-chmtime --get file' displays only the mtime.
If it is used in combination with (+|=|=+|=-|-)seconds, it changes
and prints the new value.

	test-chmtime -v +0 file | sed 's/[^0-9].*$//'

is now equivalent to:

	test-chmtime --get file

efd71f8913 t/helper: add an empty test-tool program
This will become an umbrella program that absorbs most [1] t/helper
programs in. By having a single executable binary we reduce disk usage
(libgit.a is replicated by every t/helper program) and shorten link
time a bit.

Running "make --jobs=1; du -sh t/helper" with ccache fully populated,
it takes 27 seconds and 277MB at the beginning of this series, 17
seconds and 42MB at the end.

[1] There are a couple programs that will not become part of
    test-tool: test-line-buffer and test-svn-fe have extra
    dependencies and test-fake-ssh's program name has to be a single
    word for some ssh tests.

Migrate the struct alternate_object_database and all its related
functions to the object store as these functions are easier found in
that header. The migration is just a verbatim copy, no need to
include the object store header at any C file, because cache.h includes

The hashmap API always use an unsigned value for storing
and comparing hashes. Whereas this test code uses "int".
This works out in practice since one can typically
round-trip between "int" and "unsigned int". But since this
is essentially reference code for the hashmap API, we should
model using the correct types.

7daa825d67 test-hashmap: simplify alloc_test_entry
This function takes two ptr/len pairs, which implies that
they can be arbitrary buffers. But internally, it assumes
that each "ptr" is NUL-terminated at "len" (because we
memcpy an extra byte to pick up the NUL terminator).

In practice this works because each caller only ever passes
strlen(ptr) as the length. But let's drop the "len"
parameters to make our expectations clear.

Note that we can get rid of the "l1" and "l2" variables from
cmd_main() as a further cleanup, since they are now mostly
used to check whether the p1 and p2 arguments are present
(technically the length parameters conflated NULL with the
empty string, which we no longer do, but I think that is
actually an improvement).

Using fgets() with a fixed-size buffer can lead to lines
being accidentally split across two calls if they are larger
than the buffer size.

As this is just a test helper, this is unlikely to be a
problem in practice. But since people may look at test

In general, using a bare snprintf can truncate the resulting
buffer, leading to confusing results. In this case we know
that our buffer is sized large enough to accommodate our
loop, so there's no bug. However, we should use xsnprintf()
to document (and check) that assumption, and to model good
practice to people reading the code.

b6c4380d6e test-hashmap: check allocation computation for overflow
When we allocate the test_entry flex-struct, we have to add
up all of the elements that go into the flex array. If these
were to overflow a size_t, this would allocate a too-small
buffer, which we would then overflow in our memcpy steps.

Since this is just a test-helper, it probably doesn't matter
in practice, but we should model the correct technique by
using the st_add() macros.

Unfortunately, we cannot use the FLEX_ALLOC() macros here,
because we are stuffing two different buffers into a single
flex array.

While we're here, let's also swap out "malloc" for our
error-checking "xmalloc", and use the preferred
"sizeof(*var)" instead of "sizeof(type)".

aef6cf1e50 test-hashmap: use ALLOC_ARRAY rather than bare malloc
These two array allocations have several minor flaws:

  - they use bare malloc, rather than our error-checking
    xmalloc

  - they do a bare multiplication to determine the total
    size (which in theory can overflow, though in this case
    the sizes are all constants)

  - they use sizeof(type), but the type in the second one
    doesn't match the actual array (though it's "int" versus
    "unsigned int", which are guaranteed by C99 to have the
    same size)

None of these are likely to be problems in practice, and
this is just a test helper. But since people often look at
test helpers as reference code, we should do our best to
model the recommended techniques.

Switching to ALLOC_ARRAY fixes all three.

91061c444a wildmatch test: perform all tests under all wildmatch() modes
Rewrite the wildmatch() test suite so that each test now tests all
combinations of the wildmatch() WM_CASEFOLD and WM_PATHNAME flags.

Before this change some test inputs were not tested on
e.g. WM_PATHNAME. Now the function is stress tested on all possible
inputs, and for each input we declare what the result should be if the
mode is case-insensitive, or pathname matching, or case-sensitive or
not matching pathnames.

Also before this change, nothing was testing case-insensitive
non-pathname matching, so I've added that to test-wildmatch.c and made
use of it.

This yields a rather scary patch, but there are no functional changes
here, just more test coverage. Some now-redundant tests were deleted
as a result of this change, since they were now duplicating an earlier
test.

Occasionally submodule code could execute new commands with GIT_DIR set
to some submodule. GIT_TRACE prints just the command line which makes it
hard to tell that it's not really executed on this repository.

44103f4197 t/helper: ignore everything but sources
Compiled test helpers in t/helper are out of sync with the .gitignore
files quite frequently. This can happen when new test helpers are added,
but the explicit .gitignore file is not updated in the same commit, or
when you forget to 'make clean' before checking out a different version
of git, as the different version may have a different explicit list of
test helpers to ignore.

Fix this by having an overly broad ignore pattern in that directory:
Anything, except C and shell source, will be ignored.

5f9674243d config: add --expiry-date
Add --expiry-date as a data-type for config files when
'git config --get' is used. This will return any relative
or fixed dates from config files as timestamps.

This is useful for scripts (e.g. gc.reflogexpire) that work
with timestamps so that '2.weeks' can be converted to a format
acceptable by those scripts/functions.

Following the convention of git_config_pathname(), move
the helper function required for this feature from
builtin/reflog.c to builtin/config.c where other similar
functions exist (e.g. for --bool or --path), and match
the order of parameters with other functions (i.e. output
pointer as first parameter).

cc61cf465f test-ref-store: avoid passing NULL to printf
It's possible for resolve_ref_unsafe() to return NULL (e.g.,
if we are reading and the ref does not exist), in which case
we'll pass NULL to printf. On glibc systems this produces
"(null)", but on others it may segfault.

The tests don't expect any such case, but if we ever did
trigger this, we would prefer to cleanly fail the test with
unexpected input rather than segfault. Let's manually
replace NULL with "(null)". The exact value doesn't matter,
as it won't match any possible ref the caller could expect
(and anyway, the exit code of the program will tell whether
"ref" is valid or not).

14527b3002 fsmonitor: add a performance test
Add a test utility (test-drop-caches) that flushes all changes to disk
then drops file system cache on Windows, Linux, and OSX.

Add a perf test (p7519-fsmonitor.sh) for fsmonitor.

By default, the performance test will utilize the Watchman file system
monitor if it is installed.  If Watchman is not installed, it will use a
dummy integration script that does not report any new or modified files.
The dummy script has very little overhead which provides optimistic results.

The performance test will also use the untracked cache feature if it is
available as fsmonitor uses it to speed up scanning for untracked files.

There are 4 environment variables that can be used to alter the default
behavior of the performance test:

GIT_PERF_7519_UNTRACKED_CACHE: used to configure core.untrackedCache
GIT_PERF_7519_SPLIT_INDEX: used to configure core.splitIndex
GIT_PERF_7519_FSMONITOR: used to configure core.fsmonitor
GIT_PERF_7519_DROP_CACHE: if set, the OS caches are dropped between tests

The big win for using fsmonitor is the elimination of the need to scan the
working directory looking for changed and untracked files. If the file
information is all cached in RAM, the benefits are reduced.

c97ee171a6 t0040,t1502: Demonstrate parse_options bugs
When the option spec contains no switches or only hidden switches,
parse_options will emit an extra blank line at the end of help output so
that the help text will end in two blank lines instead of one.

When parse_options produces internal help output after an error has
occurred it will emit blank lines within the usage string to stdout
instead of stderr.

Update t/helper/test-parse-options.c to have a description body in the
usage string to exercise this second bug and mark tests as failing in
t0040.

Add tests to t1502 to demonstrate both of these problems.

8968b7b0a8 test-line-buffer: simplify command parsing
The handle_command() function matches an incoming command
string with a sequence of starts_with() checks. But it also
surrounds these with a switch on the first character of the
command, which lets us jump to the right block of
starts_with() without going linearly through the list.

However, each case arm of the switch falls through to the
one below it. This is pointless (we know that a command
starting with 'b' does not need to check any of the commands
in the 'c' block), and it makes gcc's -Wimplicit-fallthrough
complain.

We could solve this by adding a break at the end of each
block. However, this optimization isn't helping anything.
Even if it does make matching faster (which is debatable),
this is code that is run only in the test suite, and each
run receives at most two of these "commands". We should
favor simplicity and readability over micro-optimizing.

Instead, let's drop the switch statement completely and
replace it with an if/else cascade.

06f46f237a avoid "write_in_full(fd, buf, len) != len" pattern
The return value of write_in_full() is either "-1", or the
requested number of bytes[1]. If we make a partial write
before seeing an error, we still return -1, not a partial
value. This goes back to f6aa66cb95 (write_in_full: really
write in full or return error on disk full., 2007-01-11).

So checking anything except "was the return value negative"
is pointless. And there are a couple of reasons not to do
so:

  1. It can do a funny signed/unsigned comparison. If your
     "len" is signed (e.g., a size_t) then the compiler will
     promote the "-1" to its unsigned variant.

     This works out for "!= len" (unless you really were
     trying to write the maximum size_t bytes), but is a
     bug if you check "< len" (an example of which was fixed
     recently in config.c).

     We should avoid promoting the mental model that you
     need to check the length at all, so that new sites are
     not tempted to copy us.

  2. Checking for a negative value is shorter to type,
     especially when the length is an expression.

  3. Linus says so. In d34cf19b89 (Clean up write_in_full()
     users, 2007-01-11), right after the write_in_full()
     semantics were changed, he wrote:

       I really wish every "write_in_full()" user would just
       check against "<0" now, but this fixes the nasty and
       stupid ones.

     Appeals to authority aside, this makes it clear that
     writing it this way does not have an intentional
     benefit. It's a historical curiosity that we never
     bothered to clean up (and which was undoubtedly
     cargo-culted into new sites).

So let's convert these obviously-correct cases (this
includes write_str_in_full(), which is just a wrapper for
write_in_full()).

[1] A careful reader may notice there is one way that
    write_in_full() can return a different value. If we ask
    write() to write N bytes and get a return value that is
    _larger_ than N, we could return a larger total. But
    besides the fact that this would imply a totally broken
    version of write(), it would already invoke undefined
    behavior. Our internal remaining counter is an unsigned
    size_t, which means that subtracting too many byte will
    wrap it around to a very large number. So we'll instantly
    begin reading off the end of the buffer, trying to write
    gigabytes (or petabytes) of data.

about threaded unprotected R/W access to map.size with my previous "disallow

Add API to hashmap to disable item counting and thus automatic rehashing.
Also include API to later re-enable them.

When item counting is disabled, the map.size field is invalid.  So to
prevent accidents, the field has been renamed and an accessor function
hashmap_get_size() has been added.  All direct references to this
field have been been updated.  And the name of the field changed
to map.private_size to communicate this.

causes (at least) Clang to throw an incompatible-pointer-types warning
for test-path-utils, where we try to pass around pointers to these
functions.

Avoid this warning (which is fatal in DEVELOPER mode) by ignoring the
promise of OpenBSD's implementations to keep input strings unmodified
and enclosing them in POSIX-compatible wrappers.

7663cdc86c hashmap.h: compare function has access to a data field
When using the hashmap a common need is to have access to caller provided
data in the compare function. A couple of times we abuse the keydata field
to pass in the data needed. This happens for example in patch-ids.c.

This patch changes the function signature of the compare function
to have one more void pointer available. The pointer given for each
invocation of the compare function must be defined in the init function
of the hashmap and is just passed through.

Documentation of this new feature is deferred to a later patch.
This is a rather mechanical conversion, just adding the new pass-through
parameter.  However while at it improve the naming of the fields of all
compare functions used by hashmaps by ensuring unused parameters are
prefixed with 'unused_' and naming the parameters what they are (instead
of 'unused' make it 'unused_keydata').

55d3426929 wildmatch: remove unused wildopts parameter
Remove the unused wildopts placeholder struct from being passed to all
wildmatch() invocations, or rather remove all the boilerplate NULL
parameters.

This parameter was added back in commit 9b3497cab9 ("wildmatch: rename
constants and update prototype", 2013-01-01) as a placeholder for
future use. Over 4 years later nothing has made use of it, let's just
remove it. It can be added in the future if we find some reason to
start using such a parameter.

dddbad728c timestamp_t: a new data type for timestamps
Git's source code assumes that unsigned long is at least as precise as
time_t. Which is incorrect, and causes a lot of problems, in particular
where unsigned long is only 32-bit (notably on Windows, even in 64-bit
versions).

So let's just use a more appropriate data type instead. In preparation
for this, we introduce the new `timestamp_t` data type.

By necessity, this is a very, very large patch, as it has to replace all
timestamps' data type in one go.

As we will use a data type that is not necessarily identical to `time_t`,
we need to be very careful to use `time_t` whenever we interact with the
system functions, and `timestamp_t` everywhere else.

cb71f8bdb5 PRItime: introduce a new "printf format" for timestamps
Currently, Git's source code treats all timestamps as if they were
unsigned longs. Therefore, it is okay to write "%lu" when printing them.

There is a substantial problem with that, though: at least on Windows,
time_t is *larger* than unsigned long, and hence we will want to switch
away from the ill-specified `unsigned long` data type.

So let's introduce the pseudo format "PRItime" (currently simply being
defined to "lu") to make it easier to change the data type used for
timestamps.

a07fb0507f t0006 & t5000: prepare for 64-bit timestamps
Git's source code refers to timestamps as unsigned longs. On 32-bit
platforms, as well as on Windows, unsigned long is not large enough to
capture dates that are "absurdly far in the future".

It is perfectly valid by the C standard, of course, for the `long` data
type to refer to 32-bit integers. That is why the `time_t` data type
exists: so that it can be 64-bit even if `long` is 32-bit. Git's source
code simply uses an incorrect data type for timestamps, is all.

The earlier quick fix 6b9c38e14c (t0006: skip "far in the future" test
when unsigned long is not long enough, 2016-07-11) papered over this
issue simply by skipping the respective test cases on platforms where
they would fail due to the data type in use.

This quick fix, however, tests for *long* to be 64-bit or not. What we
need, though, is a test that says whether *whatever data type we use for
timestamps* is 64-bit or not.

The same quick fix was used to handle the similar problem where Git's
source code uses `unsigned long` to represent size, instead of `size_t`,
conflating the two issues.

So let's just add another prerequisite to test specifically whether
timestamps are represented by a 64-bit data type or not. Later, after we
switch to a larger data type, we can flip that prerequisite to test
`time_t` instead of `long`.

bccb22cbb1 test-read-cache: setup git dir
b1ef400e (setup_git_env: avoid blind fall-back to ".git") made programs
that tried to access a repository without initializing properly die with
a diagnostic message.  One offender is test-read-cache, which is used in
p0002.  Fix it by calling setup_git_directory() before accessing the
index.

ea19489532 name-hash: add test-lazy-init-name-hash
Add t/helper/test-lazy-init-name-hash.c test code
to demonstrate performance times for lazy_init_name_hash()
using the original single-threaded and the new multi-threaded
code paths.

Includes a --dump option to dump the created hashmaps to
stdout.  You can use this to run both code paths and
confirm that they generate the same hashmaps.

Includes a --analyze option to analyze performance of both
code paths over a range of index sizes to help you find a
lower bound for the LAZY_THREAD_COST in name-hash.c.
For example, passing "-a 4000" will set "istate.cache_nr"
to 4000 and then try the multi-threaded code -- probably
giving 2 threads with 2000 entries each.  It will then
run both the single-threaded (1x4000) and the multi-threaded
(2x2000) and compare the times.  It will then repeat the
test with 8000, 12000, and etc. so that you can see the
cross over.

6ad8b8e98f Merge branch 'rs/qsort-s'
A few codepaths had to rely on a global variable when sorting
elements of an array because sort(3) API does not allow extra data
to be passed to the comparison function.  Use qsort_s() when
natively available, and a fallback implementation of it when not,
to eliminate the need, which is a prerequisite for making the
codepath reentrant.

b3e83cc752 hold_locked_index(): align error handling with hold_lockfile_for_update()
Callers of the hold_locked_index() function pass 0 when they want to
prepare to write a new version of the index file without wishing to
die or emit an error message when the request fails (e.g. somebody
else already held the lock), and pass 1 when they want the call to
die upon failure.

This option is called LOCK_DIE_ON_ERROR by the underlying lockfile
API, and the hold_locked_index() function translates the paramter to
LOCK_DIE_ON_ERROR when calling the hold_lock_file_for_update().

Replace these hardcoded '1' with LOCK_DIE_ON_ERROR and stop
translating.  Callers other than the ones that are replaced with
this change pass '0' to the function; no behaviour change is
intended with this patch.

Among the callers of hold_locked_index() that passes 0:

 - diff.c::refresh_index_quietly() at the end of "git diff" is an
   opportunistic update; it leaks the lockfile structure but it is
   just before the program exits and nobody should care.

 - builtin/describe.c::cmd_describe(),
   builtin/commit.c::cmd_status(),
   sequencer.c::read_and_refresh_cache() are all opportunistic
   updates and they are OK.

 - builtin/update-index.c::cmd_update_index() takes a lock upfront
   but we may end up not needing to update the index (i.e. the
   entries may be fully up-to-date), in which case we do not need to
   issue an error upon failure to acquire the lock.  We do diagnose
   and die if we indeed need to update, so it is OK.

 - wt-status.c::require_clean_work_tree() IS BUGGY.  It asks
   silence, does not check the returned value.  Compare with
   callsites like cmd_describe() and cmd_status() to notice that it
   is wrong to call update_index_if_able() unconditionally.

4ce742fc9c test-*-cache-tree: setup git dir
These test helper programs access the index, but do not ever
setup_git_directory(), meaning we just blindly looked in
".git/index". This happened to work for the purposes of our
tests (which do not run from subdirectories, nor in
non-repos), but it's a bad habit.

16ddcd403b sha1_array: let callbacks interrupt iteration
The callbacks for iterating a sha1_array must have a void
return.  This is unlike our usual for_each semantics, where
a callback may interrupt iteration and have its value
propagated. Let's switch it to the usual form, which will
enable its use in more places (e.g., where we are replacing
an existing iteration with a different data structure).

Replace uses of strbuf_addf() for adding strings with more lightweight
strbuf_addstr() calls.

In http-push.c it becomes easier to see what's going on without having
to verfiy that the definition of PROPFIND_ALL_REQUEST doesn't contain
any format specifiers.

the very beginning of any Git program, and programs that are not
built-in commands had to do them exactly the same way as "git"
potty does.  It was easy to make mistakes in one-off standalone

make it harder to make mistakes.

f449198e58 coccinelle: convert hashcpy() with null_sha1 to hashclr()
hashcpy with null_sha1 as the source is equivalent to hashclr.  In
addition to being simpler, using hashclr may give the compiler a chance
to optimize better.  Convert instances of hashcpy with the source
argument of null_sha1 to hashclr.

This transformation was implemented using the following semantic patch:

2721ce21e4 use string_list initializer consistently
There are two types of string_lists: those that own the
string memory, and those that don't. You can tell the
difference by the strdup_strings flag, and one should use
either STRING_LIST_INIT_DUP, or STRING_LIST_INIT_NODUP as an
initializer.

Historically, the normal all-zeros initialization has
corresponded to the NODUP case. Many sites use no
initializer at all, and that works as a shorthand for that
case. But for a reader of the code, it can be hard to
remember which is which. Let's be more explicit and actually
have each site declare which type it means to use.

This is a fairly mechanical conversion; I assumed each site
was correct as-is, and just switched them all to NODUP.

9acc591111 config: add a notion of "scope"
A config callback passed to git_config() doesn't know very
much about the context in which it sees a variable. It can
ask whether the variable comes from a file, and get the file
name. But without analyzing the filename (which is hard to
do accurately), it cannot tell whether it is in system-level
config, user-level config, or repo-specific config.

Generally this doesn't matter; the point of not passing this
to the callback is that it should treat the config the same
no matter where it comes from. But some programs, like
upload-pack, are a special case: we should be able to run
them in an untrusted repository, which means we cannot use
any "dangerous" config from the repository config file (but
it is OK to use it from system or user config).

This patch teaches the config code to record the "scope" of
each variable, and make it available inside config
callbacks, similar to how we give access to the filename.
The scope is the starting source for a particular parsing
operation, and remains the same even if we include other
files (so a .git/config which includes another file will
remain CONFIG_SCOPE_REPO, as it would be similarly
untrusted).

0d44a2dacc config: return configset value for current_config_ functions
When 473166b (config: add 'origin_type' to config_source
struct, 2016-02-19) added accessor functions for the origin
type and name, it taught them only to look at the "cf"
struct that is filled in while we are parsing the config.
This is sufficient to make it work with git-config, which
uses git_config_with_options() under the hood. That function
freshly parses the config files and triggers the callback
when it parses each key.

Most git programs, however, use git_config(). This interface
will populate a cache during the actual parse, and then
serve values from the cache. Calling current_config_filename()
in a callback here will find a NULL cf and produce an error.
There are no such callers right now, but let's prepare for
adding some by making this work.

We already record source information in a struct attached to
each value. We just need to make it globally available and
then consult it from the accessor functions.
