986f078366 bfd_size_type to size_t
bfd_size_type was invented a long time ago in the K&R days. Many
places in binutils ought to be using size_t instead (and there are
lots of places that use long or unsigned long that really ought to use
size_t too). Note that you can't change everything over to size_t: A
32-bit host needs a larger type than size_t to support reading and
processing of 64-bit ELF object files. This patch just tidies some
of the more obvious uses of bfd_size_type that could be size_t. There
no doubt are more lurking in the source. Incidentally, practically
all functions used for output of object files can use size_t and don't
need to worry about overflow of size expressions. If you have
something like
  symcount * sizeof (void *)
when symcount is counting symbols already in memory then you know that
this expression can't overflow since the size of a symbol in memory is
larger by far than that of a pointer.

fd3619828e bfd_section_* macros
This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various
bfd section macros and functions. The bfd is hardly ever used and if
needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can
be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind
std_section special sections. Those sections shouldn't be modified
anyway.

The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros,
replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds
bfd_set_section_lma. I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where
compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling
bfd_rename_section. This would have broken bfd_get_section_by_name
and similar functions, but that hardly mattered at such a late stage
in gas processing.

7af5d5c4dd PR23980, assertion fail
All of the backend relocate_section functions that interpret reloc
numbers assuming the input file is of the expected type (ie. same as

Not many do, and those that do currently just assert. This patch
replaces the assertion with a more graceful exit.

e6213e09ed S/390: Prevent GOT access rewrite for certain symbols
When dereferencing a GOT slot with lgrl or lg we rewrite this using
larl to get rid of the extra memory access. However, we cannot do
this for:

- symbols marked for absolute addressing

afca762f59 S/390: Improve partial relro support for 64 bit
Currently on S/390 the .got.plt always comes first which prevents the
GNU_RELRO segment from being extended across the non-plt GOT entries.

Just swapping both unfortunately is not that simple since our ABI
requires the _GLOBAL_OFFSET_TABLE_ symbol to point to the very
beginning of the entire GOT. Of the 3 magic GOT entries the first is
accessed via got pointer while second and third are being accessed via
DT_PLTGOT. In order to keep them together we make DT_PLTGOT to point
to the .got instead of .got.plt. However, this violates an assumption
in the dynamic linker prelink undo code about the GOTPLT entries
starting at DT_PLTGOT + 3. We got rid of this requirement with a
Glibc patch already in version 2.24:
https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2016-06/msg01302.html

So the S/390 relro GOT layout will look like this with this patch:

      +----------------------------------+
      |got[0]: DYNAMIC                   |   <--- _GLOBAL_OFFSET_TABLE_ == DT_PLTGOT .got
      |got[1]: link_map parm             |
      |got[2]: &_dl_runtime_resolve      |
      +----------------------------------+
      |                                  |   non-plt GOT entries
      |                                  |
      |                                  |
      +----------------------------------+
      |                                  |   <--- .gotplt, PLT GOT entries
      |                                  |
      |                                  |
      |                                  |
      +----------------------------------+

The patch detects the current layout in size_dynamic_section in order
to deal also with linker scripts not generated by this ld version.
With partial relro enabled we pick a linker script where .got and
.got.plt are swapped which then triggers the rest of the logic.

ld/ChangeLog:

602f165704 -Wstringop-truncation warnings
This patch is aimed at silencing gcc8 -Wstringop-truncation warnings.

Unfortunately adding __attribute__ ((__nonstring)) doesn't work in a
number of the places patched here, (see
https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=85643) so if you have
recent glibc headers installed you'll need to configure binutils with
--disable-werror to compile using gcc8 or gcc9.

f657f8c4a1 Fix Sparc, s390 and AArch64 targets so that they can handle relocs against ifunc symbols found in note sections.
Following on from PR 22929, I have found the same problem exists with
  other ifunc supporting targets too. Plus see this link for the bug
  being reported against the s390x binutils for Fedora rawhide:

     https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1553705

  So I am going to check in the patch below which applies the same
  change that H.J. made for the x86_64 target to the other affected
  targets. (Specifically: S390, AArch64 and Sparc). Plus it adds a new
  test to the linker testsuite to make sure that this problem stays
  fixed.

the problems.

3bf083ed23 dyn_relocs tidy
Many targets define their own dyn_relocs struct when they could use
struct elf_dyn_relocs. This patch tidies that, and uses
readonly_dynrelocs in a few more places.

The SH adjust_dynamic_symbol had some really weird code dating back to
2002 that looked over dynamic relocations for any in SEC_HAS_CONTENTS
or SEC_READONLY sections, rather than just the usual SEC_READONLY
sections. So basically any dynamic relocation. What's more, the SH
relocate_section has no support for emitting dynamic relocations in
non-PIC. In other words, SH has no support for avoiding copy relocs
in non-PIC. I've made that more obvious by using "if (0 && ..)" in
asjust_dynamic_symbol.

Unfortunately, LM32, M32R, NDS32, and OR1K copied the bogus SH
adjust_dynamic_symbol code. So none of those targets would have
avoided copy relocs. LM32, M32R, NDS32 get the "if (0)" treatment
too. (LM32 is even more broken in that non_got_ref is never set.)

OR1K relocate_section looks like it might support dynamic relocs in
non-PIC, so I've enabled the copy reloc avoidance code for that
target.

63c1f59d66 readonly_dynrelocs
In early October, HJ Lu added support for a number of targets to "Dump
dynamic relocation in read-only section with minfo". This extends
that support to more targets, displays the symbol involved, and splits
the existing function that sets TEXTREL into a "readonly_dynrelocs"
and "maybe_set_textrel" function.  I'll need "readonly_dynrelocs" if I
ever get around to fixing "pr22374 function pointer initialization"
fails.

am33_2.0, arc, bfin, hppa64, mn10300, and nios2 fail to mark a binary
needing text relocations with DT_TEXTREL. That's not good. xtensa also
fails to do so but complains about "dangerous relocation: dynamic
relocation in read-only section" so I reckon that is fine and have
marked the test as an xfail. The other targets need maintainer
attention.

Curiously, the map file dump wasn't added for x86, so the map test
currently fail on x86. It also fails on alpha, am33_2.0, arc, bfin,
hppa64, ia64, m68k, mips, mn10300, nios2, score and vax.  cris
complains with "tmpdir/textrel.o, section .rodata: relocation
R_CRIS_32 should not be used in a shared object; recompile with -fPIC"
so I've marked it as an xfail.

60d67dc84b Rename u.weakdef and make it a circular list
This makes the elf_link_hash_entry weakdef field, currently used to
point from a weak symbol to a strong alias, a circular list so that
all aliases can be found from any of them. A new flag, is_weakalias,
distinguishes the weak symbol from a strong alias, and is used in all
places where we currently test u.weakdef != NULL.

With the original u.weakdef handling it was possible to have two or
more weak symbols pointing via u.weakdef to a strong definition.
Obviously that situation can't map to a circular list; One or more of
the weak symbols must point at another weak alias rather than the
strong definition. To handle that, I've added an accessor function to
return the strong definition.

	* elf-bfd.h (struct elf_link_hash_entry): Add is_weakalias.
	Rename u.weakdef to u.alias and update comment.
	(weakdef): New static inline function.

	u.weakdef.
	(elf_link_add_object_symbols): Delete new_weakdef flag.  Test
	is_weakalias and use weakdef. Set is_weakalias and circular
	u.alias.  Update comments.
	(_bfd_elf_gc_mark_rsec): Test is_weakalias rather than
	u.weakdef != NULL and use weakdef function.
	* elf-m10300.c (_bfd_mn10300_elf_adjust_dynamic_symbol): Test

5c3261b0e8 ELF: Call check_relocs after opening all inputs
For all ELF targers, call check_relocs after opening all inputs and
garbage collection. Since the symbol resolution is known, check_relocs
can be simplified. Also garbage collection doesn't need to undo what
check_relocs has done for symbols which have been garbage collected.
Since ELF targets never see the removed sections, gc_sweep_hook can be
removed from elf_backend_data and we can avoid GOT/PLT with garbage
collection now.

Set link_info.check_relocs_after_open_input to TRUE for all linker
targets which use ELF linker and update garbage collection tests to
remove unused GOT section.

ldemul_after_check_relocs is added for powerpc to support --secure-plt,
--bss-plt and --sdata-got.

Tested natively without regressions on i686, x86-64 and x32. Tested

afbf7e8e3a Don't make dynamic .data.rel.ro SEC_READONLY
I'd made this dynamic section read-only so a flag test distinguished
it from .dynbss, but like any other .data.rel.ro section it really
should be marked read-write. (It is read-only after relocation, not
before.) When using the standard linker scripts this usually doesn't
matter since the output section is among other read-write sections and
not page aligned. However, it might matter in the extraordinary case
of the dynamic section being the only .data.rel.ro section with the
output section just happening to be page aligned and a multiple of a
page in size. In that case the output section would be read-only, and
live it its own read-only PT_LOAD segment, which is incorrect.

e81830c5c6 link_hash_copy_indirect and symbol flags
A while ago HJ fixed PR ld/18720 with commit 6e33951ed, which, among
other things, modified _bfd_elf_link_hash_copy_indirect to not copy
ref_dynamic, ref_regular, ref_regular_nonweak, non_got_ref, needs_plt
and pointer_equality_needed when setting up an indirect non-versioned
symbol pointing to a non-default versioned symbol. I didn't notice at
the time, but the pr18720 testcase fails on hppa-linux with
"internal error, aborting at binutils-gdb-2.28/bfd/elf32-hppa.c:3933
in elf32_hppa_relocate_section".

Now hppa-linux creates entries in the plt even for local functions, if
they are referenced using plabel (function pointer) relocations. So
needs_plt is set for foo when processing pr18720a.o. When the aliases
in pr28720b.o are processed, we get an indirection from foo to
foo@FOO, but don't copy needs_plt. Since foo@FOO is the "real" symbol
that is used after that point, no plt entry is made for foo and we
bomb when relocating the plabel.

As shown by the hppa-linux scenario, needs_plt should be copied even
for non-default versioned symbols. I believe all of the others ought
to be copied too, with the exception of ref_dynamic. Not copying
ref_dynamic is right because if a shared lib references "foo" it
should not be satisfied by any non-default version "foo@FOO".

	* elflink.c (_bfd_elf_link_hash_copy_indirect): Only omit
	copying one flag, ref_dynamic, when versioned_hidden.
	* elf64-ppc.c (ppc64_elf_copy_indirect_symbol): Likewise.
	* elf32-hppa.c (elf32_hppa_copy_indirect_symbol): Use same
	logic for copying weakdef flags. Copy plabel flag and merge
	tls_type.
	* elf32-i386.c (elf_i386_copy_indirect_symbol): Use same logic
	for copying weakdef flags.
	* elf32-ppc.c (ppc_elf_copy_indirect_symbol): Likewise.
	* elf32-s390.c (elf_s390_copy_indirect_symbol): Likewise.
	* elf32-sh.c (sh_elf_copy_indirect_symbol): Likewise.
	* elf64-s390.c (elf_s390_copy_indirect_symbol): Likewise.
	* elfnn-ia64.c (elfNN_ia64_hash_copy_indirect): Likewise.
	* elf64-x86-64.c (elf_x86_64_copy_indirect_symbol): Likewise.
	Simplify.
