213516ef31 Update copyright year range in header of all files managed by GDB
This commit is the result of running the gdb/copyright.py script,
which automated the update of the copyright year range for all
source files managed by the GDB project to be updated to include
year 2023.

f34652de0b internal_error: remove need to pass __FILE__/__LINE__
Currently, every internal_error call must be passed __FILE__/__LINE__
explicitly, like:

  internal_error (__FILE__, __LINE__, "foo %d", var);

The need to pass in explicit __FILE__/__LINE__ is there probably
because the function predates widespread and portable variadic macros
availability.  We can use variadic macros nowadays, and in fact, we
already use them in several places, including the related
gdb_assert_not_reached.

So this patch renames the internal_error function to something else,
and then reimplements internal_error as a variadic macro that expands
__FILE__/__LINE__ itself.

The result is that we now should call internal_error like so:

  internal_error ("foo %d", var);

Likewise for internal_warning.

The patch adjusts all calls sites.  99% of the adjustments were done
with a perl/sed script.

The non-mechanical changes are in gdbsupport/errors.h,
gdbsupport/gdb_assert.h, and gdb/gdbarch.py.

bd2b40ac12 Change GDB to use frame_info_ptr
This changes GDB to use frame_info_ptr instead of frame_info *
The substitution was done with multiple sequential `sed` commands:

sed 's/^struct frame_info;/class frame_info_ptr;/'
sed 's/struct frame_info \*/frame_info_ptr /g' - which left some
    issues in a few files, that were manually fixed.
sed 's/\<frame_info \*/frame_info_ptr /g'
sed 's/frame_info_ptr $/frame_info_ptr/g' - used to remove whitespace
    problems.

The changed files were then manually checked and some 'sed' changes
undone, some constructors and some gets were added, according to what
made sense, and what Tromey originally did

98badbfdc2 Use gdb_bfd_ref_ptr in objfile
This changes struct objfile to use a gdb_bfd_ref_ptr.  In addition to
removing some manual memory management, this fixes a use-after-free
that was introduced by the registry rewrite series.  The issue there
was that, in some cases, registry shutdown could refer to memory that
had already been freed.  This help fix the bug by delaying the
destruction of the BFD reference (and thus the per-bfd object) until
after the registry has been shut down.

492325c4b7 gdb: fix some clang-tidy readability-misleading-indentation warnings
I have warnings like these showing in my editor all the time, so I
thought I'd run clang-tidy with this diagnostic on all the files (that I
can compile) and fix them.

There is still one warning, in utils.c, but that's because some code
is mixed up with preprocessor macros (#ifdef TUI), so I think there no
good solution there.

3ceda72296 Fix GDB internal error by using text (instead of data) section offset
Fedora Rawhide is now using gcc-12.0.  As part of updating to the
gcc-12.0 package set, Rawhide is also now using a version of libgcc_s
which lacks a .data section.  This causes gdb to fail in the following
fashion while debugging a program (such as gdb) which uses libgcc_s:

    (top-gdb) run
    Starting program: rawhide-master/bld/gdb/gdb

I snipped the backtrace from the above output.  Instead, here's a

(Obviously, in order to obtain it, I used a GDB which has been patched
with this commit.)

The function 'relocate_address' in gdb/stap-probe.c attempts to do
its "relocation" by using objfile->data_section_offset().  That
method, data_section_offset() is defined as follows in objfiles.h:

The internal error occurs when the SECT_OFF_DATA macro finds that the
'sect_index_data' field is -1:

relocate_address() is obtaining the section offset in order to compute
a relocated address.  For some ABIs, such as the System V ABI, the
section offsets will all be the same.  So for those ABIs, it doesn't
matter which offset is used.  However, other ABIs, such as the FDPIC
ABI, will have different offsets for the various sections.  Thus, for
those ABIs, it is vital that this and other relocation code use the
correct offset.

In stap_probe::get_relocated_address, the address to which to add the
offset (thus forming the relocated address) is obtained via
this->get_address (); get_address is a getter for m_address in
probe.h.  It's documented/defined as follows (also in probe.h):

     SECT_OFF_TEXT.  */
  CORE_ADDR m_address;

(Thanks to Tom Tromey for this observation.)

So, based on this, the current use of data_section_offset /
SECT_OFF_DATA is wrong.  This relocation code should have been using
text_section_offset / SECT_OFF_TEXT all along.  That being the
case, I've adjusted the stap-probe.c relocation code accordingly.

Searching the sources turned up one other use of data_section_offset,
in gdb/dtrace-probe.c, so I've updated that code as well.  The same
reasoning presented above applies to this case too.

4a94e36819 Automatic Copyright Year update after running gdb/copyright.py
This commit brings all the changes made by running gdb/copyright.py
as per GDB's Start of New Year Procedure.

For the avoidance of doubt, all changes in this commits were
performed by the script.

1eaebe02cf Remove union exp_element
This removes union exp_element functions that either create such
elements or walk them.  struct expression no longer holds
exp_elements.  A couple of language_defn methods are also removed, as
they are obsolete.

Note that this patch also removes the print_expression code.  The only
in-tree caller of this was from dump_prefix_expression, which is only
called when expression debugging is enabled.  Implementing this would
involve a fair amount of code, and it seems to me that prefix dumping
is preferable anyway, as it is unambiguous.  So, I have not
reimplemented this feature.

413403fc34 Add an expr::operation_up to struct expression
This adds an expr::operation_up to struct expression, and then
modifies various parts of GDB to use this member when it is non-null.
The list of such spots was a bit surprising to me, and found only
after writing most of the code and then noticing what no longer
compiled.

In a few spots, new accessor methods are added to operation
subclasses, so that code that dissects an expression will work with
the new scheme.

After this change, code that constructs an expression can be switched
to the new form without breaking.

efd7ff149a Add expected type parameter to evaluate_expression
While working on the expression rewrite, I found a few spots that
called the internal functions of the expression evaluator, just to
pass in an expected type.  This patch adds a parameter to
evaluate_expression so that these functions can avoid this dependency.

Regression tested on x86-64 Fedora 28.

2adab65cc0 Introduce expression::first_opcode
This adds a new helper method, expression::first_opcode, that extracts
the outermost opcode of an expression.  This simplifies some patches
in the expression rewrite series.

Note that this patch requires the earlier patch to avoid manual
dissection of OP_TYPE operations.

a6f3c8a1a8 Do not manually dissect OP_TYPE operations
Some code in GDB will examine the structure of an expression to see if
it starts with OP_TYPE, and then proceed to extract the type by hand.

There is no need to do this dissection manually.  evaluate_type does
the same thing via an "allowed" API.

This patch changes such code to use evaluate_type.  In two cases this
simplifies the code.

Regression tested on x86-64 Fedora 28.

dda83cd783 gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: fix leading space vs tabs issues
Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example,
there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c).  I've always found it awkward
when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong
indentation, or do I fix it?  What if the lines around it are also
wrong, do I fix them too?  I probably don't want to fix them in the same
patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch.

So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully).

One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology
more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last
change for these lines.  My counter counter argument is: when
git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit"
anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are
interested in, but is not the change you are looking for.  So you
already need a somewhat efficient way to do this.

Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this
trivial.  For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past
the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke.
It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it).
Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too.  My point is that it won't
really make archeology more difficult.

The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with
existing patches.  That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those
are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve.  I have also tried "git
rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well.  Although that will
re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing
the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy).

08feed99cb Change get_objfile_arch to a method on objfile
This changes get_objfile_arch to be a new inline method,
objfile::arch.

To my surprise, this function came up while profiling DWARF psymbol
reading.  Making this change improved performance from 1.986 seconds
to 1.869 seconds.  Both measurements were done by taking the mean of
10 runs on a fixed copy of the gdb executable.

b3b3bada0d gdb: introduce objfile text_section_offset and data_section_offset methods
The pattern

  objfile->section_offsets[SECT_OFF_TEXT (objfile)]

... appears very often, to get the offset of the text section of an
objfile.  I thought it would be more readable to write it as:

  objfile->text_section_offset ()

... so I added this method and used it where possible.  I also added
data_section_offset, although it is not used as much.

6c2659886f gdb: add back declarations for _initialize functions
I'd like to enable the -Wmissing-declarations warning.  However, it
warns for every _initialize function, for example:

6a053cb1ff Change section_offsets to a std::vector
This changes section_offsets to be specialization of a std::vector and
updates all the users.  It also removes the ANOFFSET and
SIZEOF_N_SECTION_OFFSETS macros.

Most of this is just a generic sort of cleanup, that reduces the
number of lines of code.  However, a couple spots were doing weird
things.

objfile_relocate did:

-      std::vector<struct section_offsets>
-	new_debug_offsets (SIZEOF_N_SECTION_OFFSETS (debug_objfile->num_sections));

... which seems to greatly over-estimate the number of elements
needed.

This appeared in set_objfile_default_section_offset:

-  std::vector<struct section_offsets> offsets (objf->num_sections,
-					       { { offset } });

... which makes sense due to type safety, but is also actively
confusing given that section_offsets was previously also a kind of
vector type.

Tested on x86-64 Fedora 30.

0dc327459b gdb: Remove vec.{c,h} and update code to not include vec.h
Removes vec.c and vec.h from the source tree, and remove all the
remaining includes of vec.h.  There should be no user visible changes
after this commit.

I did have a few issues rebuilding GDB after applying this patch due
to cached dependencies, I found that running this command in the build
directory resolved my build issues without requiring a 'make clean':

268a13a5a3 Rename common to gdbsupport
This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the
top level.

This patch just renames the "common" directory.  The idea is to do
this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then
move the directory to the top.  This approach makes the patches a bit
more tractable.

I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory.  However, as this
patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too
much difficulty.

Tested by the buildbot.

814cf43a1f Convert probes to type-safe registry API
This changes the probes code in elfread.c to use the type-safe
registry API.  While doing this, I saw that the caller of get_probes
owns the probes, so I went through the code and changed the vectors to
store unique_ptrs, making the ownership relationship more clear.

230d2906b9 Rename gdb exception types
This renames the gdb exception types.  The old types were only needed
due to the macros in common-exception.h that are now gone.

The intermediate layer of gdb_exception_RETURN_MASK_ALL did not seem
needed, so this patch removes it entirely.

Andreas Schwab and John Baldwin pointed out some bugs in the header
sorting patch; and I noticed that the output was not correct when
limited to a subset of files (a bug in my script).

So, I'm reverting the patch.  I may try again after fixing the issues

This patch sorts the include files for the files [a-f]*.[chyl].
The patch was written by a script.

Tested by the buildbot.

I will follow up with patches to sort the remaining files, by sorting

1201a264c8 Remove parser_state "initial_size" parameter
All the real (not test) uses of parser_state pass 10 as the
"initial_size" parameter, and it seems to me that there's no real
reason to require callers to set this.  This patch removes this
parameter.

42a4f53d2b Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.

Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.

3dcfdc5865 Fix compile error with clang 3.8
When compiling with clang 3.8 (default clang version on Debian
Stretch, the current stable), we get errors like this:

Silence them by value-initializing those objects.  It's not necessary
with other compilers (later clang versions, gcc), but it shouldn't
hurt either.

b98664d386 Remove symfile_complaints
The complaint system seems to allow for multiple different complaint
topics.  However, in practice only symfile_complaints has ever been
defined.  Seeing that complaints.c dates to 1992, and that no new
complaints have been added in the intervening years, I think it is
reasonable to admit that complaints are specifically related to
debuginfo reading.

This patch removes symfile_complaints and updates all the callers.
Some of these spots should perhaps be calls to warning instead, but I
did not make that change.

92469284a6 Fix thinko on dtrace-probe.c:dtrace_process_dof_probe
While investigating PR gdb/22557 ("Regression:
gdb.base/dtrace-probe.exp"), I noticed that the code is wrongly
declaring a new "expression_up" variable inside the TRY block in
"dtrace_process_dof_probe".  This causes the outter "expr" variable to
be empty, which may have an impact later when evaluating the
expression.

This commit fixes that.  Unfortunately the script used to test DTrace
probes (gdb/testsuite/lib/pdtrace.in) is not very reliable so I cannot
say whether this commit fixes the PR mentioned above.  Nonetheless,
it's an obvious fix and should go in.

9c23b42ffa Convert DTrace probe interface to C++ (and perform some cleanups)
This patch converts the DTrace probe
interface (gdb/dtrace-probe.[ch]) to C++, and also performs some
cleanups that were on my TODO list for a while.

The main changes were the conversion of 'struct dtrace_probe' to 'class
dtrace_probe', and a new 'class dtrace_static_probe_ops' to replace the
use of 'dtrace_probe_ops'.  Both classes implement the virtual methods
exported by their parents, 'class probe' and 'class static_probe_ops',
respectively.  I believe it's now a bit simpler to understand the
logic behind the dtrace-probe interface.

There are several helper functions used to parse parts of a dtrace
probe, and since they are generic and don't need to know about the
probe they're working on, I decided to leave them as simple static
functions (instead of e.g. converting them to class methods).

I've also converted a few uses of "VEC" to "std::vector", which makes
the code simpler and easier to maintain.  And, as usual, some cleanups
here and there.

Even though I'm sending a series of patches, they need to be tested
and committed as a single unit, because of inter-dependencies.  But it
should be easier to review in separate logical units.

I wasn't able to test these modifications because the current test
framework for DTrace probes is not working.  See
<https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=22420>.

aaa63a3190 Make probe_ops::get_probes fill an std::vector
This patch changes one usage of VEC to std::vector.  It is a relatively
straightforward 1:1 change.  The implementations of
sym_probe_fns::sym_get_probes return a borrowed reference to their probe
vectors, meaning that the caller should not free it.  In the new code, I
made them return a const reference to the vector.

This patch and the following one were tested by the buildbot.  I didn't
see any failures that looked related to this one.

Putting the semicolon on its own line is not a big sacrifice to get rid of this
warning.  I think it's also useful to keep this, because it can catch errors
like this:

  while (something);
    {
      ...
    }

although gcc would warn about it in a different way (misleading indentation).

61baf725ec update copyright year range in GDB files
This applies the second part of GDB's End of Year Procedure, which
updates the copyright year range in all of GDB's files.
