5947982f1d Simplify event_location_probe
event_location_probe currently stores two strings, but really only
needs one. This patch simplifies it and removes some unnecessary
copies as well.

8dd8c8d4ab gdb: Pass std::strings to ui_out::field_string () where convenient
While adding a ui_out::text () overload accepting a std::string, I
noticed that several callers of ui_out::field_string () were converting
std::string instances to char pointers even if not necessary.

gdb/ChangeLog:

	* ui-out.c (ui_out::field_string): Add missing style_argument
	to the overload accepting a std::string, to make it equivalent
	to the char pointer version.
	* ui-out.h (class ui_out): Ditto.
	* break-catch-sig.c (signal_catchpoint_print_one): Do not
	convert std::strings to char pointers before passing them to
	ui_out::field_string ().
	* break-catch-throw.c (print_one_detail_exception_catchpoint):
	Ditto.
	* cli/cli-setshow.c (do_show_command): Ditto.
	* disasm.c (gdb_pretty_print_disassembler::pretty_print_insn):
	Ditto.

2f822da535 gdb: generate the prefix name for prefix commands on demand
Previously, the prefixname field of struct cmd_list_element was manually
set for prefix commands. This seems verbose and error prone as it
required every single call to functions adding prefix commands to
specify the prefix name while the same information can be easily
generated.

Historically, this was not possible as the prefix field was null for
many commands, but this was fixed in commit
3f4d92ebdf by Philippe Waroquiers, so
we can rely on the prefix field being set when generating the prefix
name.

This commit also fixes a use after free in this scenario:
* A command gets created via Python (using the gdb.Command class).
  The prefix name member is dynamically allocated.
* An alias to the new command is created. The alias's prefixname is set
  to point to the prefixname for the original command with a direct
  assignment.
* A new command with the same name as the Python command is created.
* The object for the original Python command gets freed and its
  prefixname gets freed as well.
* The alias is updated to point to the new command, but its prefixname
  is not updated so it keeps pointing to the freed one.

gdb/ChangeLog:

	* command.h (add_prefix_cmd): Remove the prefixname argument as
	it can now be generated automatically. Update all callers.
	(add_basic_prefix_cmd): Ditto.
	(add_show_prefix_cmd): Ditto.
	(add_prefix_cmd_suppress_notification): Ditto.
	(add_abbrev_prefix_cmd): Ditto.
	* cli/cli-decode.c (add_prefix_cmd): Ditto.
	(add_basic_prefix_cmd): Ditto.
	(add_show_prefix_cmd): Ditto.
	(add_prefix_cmd_suppress_notification): Ditto.
	(add_prefix_cmd_suppress_notification): Ditto.
	(add_abbrev_prefix_cmd): Ditto.
	* cli/cli-decode.h (struct cmd_list_element): Replace the
	prefixname member variable with a method which generates the
	prefix name at runtime. Update all code reading the prefix
	name to use the method, and remove all code setting it.
	* python/py-cmd.c (cmdpy_destroyer): Remove code to free the
	prefixname member as it's now a method.
	(cmdpy_function): Determine if the command is a prefix by
	looking at prefixlist, not prefixname.

94c93c35b5 Remove ALL_PSPACES
This removes the ALL_PSPACES macro. In this case it seemed cleanest
to change how program spaces are stored -- instead of using a linked
list, they are now stored in a std::vector.

6c2659886f gdb: add back declarations for _initialize functions
I'd like to enable the -Wmissing-declarations warning. However, it
warns for every _initialize function, for example:

      CXX    dcache.o
    /home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c: In function ‘void _initialize_dcache()’:
    /home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c:688:1: error: no previous declaration for ‘void _initialize_dcache()’ [-Werror=missing-declarations]
     _initialize_dcache (void)
     ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The only practical way forward I found is to add back the declarations,
which were removed by this commit:

    commit 481695ed5f
    Author: John Baldwin <jhb@FreeBSD.org>
    Date:   Sat Sep 9 11:02:37 2017 -0700

        Remove unnecessary function prototypes.

I don't think it's a big problem to have the declarations for these
functions, but if anybody has a better solution for this, I'll be happy
to use it.

fe01123efb Use gdbarch for probe::get_argument_count
The probe function get_argument_count does not need a frame, only
the current gdbarch. Switch the code to pass gdbarch instead.
No functional changes.

gdb/ChangeLog:

	* break-catch-throw.c (fetch_probe_arguments): Use gdbarch.
	* dtrace-probe.c (dtrace_probe::get_argument_count): Likewise.
	* probe.c (probe_safe_evaluate_at_pc) (compute_probe_arg)
	(compile_probe_arg): Likewise.
	* probe.h (get_argument_count): Likewise.
	* solib-svr4.c (solib_event_probe_action): Likewise.
	* stap-probe.c (stap_probe::get_argument_count): Likewise.

268a13a5a3 Rename common to gdbsupport
This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the
top level.

This patch just renames the "common" directory. The idea is to do
this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then
move the directory to the top. This approach makes the patches a bit
more tractable.

I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory. However, as this
patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too
much difficulty.

Tested by the buildbot.

814cf43a1f Convert probes to type-safe registry API
This changes the probes code in elfread.c to use the type-safe
registry API. While doing this, I saw that the caller of get_probes
owns the probes, so I went through the code and changed the vectors to
store unique_ptrs, making the ownership relationship more clear.

42a4f53d2b Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.

Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.

gdb/ChangeLog:

	Update copyright year range in all GDB files.

3dcfdc5865 Fix compile error with clang 3.8
When compiling with clang 3.8 (default clang version on Debian
Stretch, the current stable), we get errors like this:

  CXX    dtrace-probe.o
../../binutils-gdb/gdb/dtrace-probe.c:103:31: error: default initialization of an object of const type 'const dtrace_static_probe_ops' without a user-provided default constructor
const dtrace_static_probe_ops dtrace_static_probe_ops;
                              ^

Silence them by value-initializing those objects. It's not necessary
with other compilers (later clang versions, gcc), but it shouldn't
hurt either.

935676c92f Convert generic probe interface to C++ (and perform some cleanups)
This patch converts the generic probe interface (gdb/probe.[ch]) to
C++, and also performs some cleanups that were on my TODO list for a
while.

The main changes were the conversion of 'struct probe' to 'class
probe', and 'struct probe_ops' to 'class static_probe_ops'. The
former now contains all the "dynamic", generic methods that act on a
probe + the generic data related to it; the latter encapsulates a
bunch of "static" methods that relate to the probe type, but not to a
specific probe itself.

I've had to do a few renamings (e.g., on 'struct bound_probe' the
field is called 'probe *prob' now, instead of 'struct probe *probe')
because GCC was complaining about naming the field using the same name
as the class. Nothing major, though. Generally speaking, the logic
behind and the design behind the code are the same.

Even though I'm sending a series of patches, they need to be tested
and committed as a single unit, because of inter-dependencies. But it
should be easier to review in separate logical units.

I've regtested this patch on BuildBot, no regressions found.

63f0e930d4 Work around GCC 6.3.1 bug
This commit works around a GCC 6.3.1 bug several people are hitting:

  https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2017-09/msg00270.html
  https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2017-10/msg00418.html

It manifests like this:

  ../../../binutils-gdb/gdb/probe.c:68:12: error: types may not be defined in a for-range-declaration [-Werror]
	 for (struct probe *probe : probes)
	      ^~~~~~

Fix it by renaming the range-for named variables to something different
from their type's name.

gdb/ChangeLog:
2017-10-16  Pedro Alves  <palves@redhat.com>

	* elfread.c (probe_key_free): Rename range-for variable.
	* probe.c (parse_probes_in_pspace, find_probes_in_objfile)
	(find_probe_by_pc, collect_probes): Rename range-for variable.

981a3fb359 Constify add_prefix_cmd
This changes add_prefix_cmd to accept a const-taking function as an
argument; then fixes up all the callers.

In a couple of spots I had to add a non-const overload of a function,
because the function is passed to two different command-adding
"constructors". These overloads are temporary; once constification is
complete they can be removed.

This patch also fixes a typo I happened to notice while constifying.

Note that this touches a couple of files (gnu-nat.c and go32-nat.c)
that I can't build.  So, while I made a best-effort there, I am not
certain they will still compile.

Tested by rebuilding.

0782db848b probe: Replace VEC(probe_ops_cp) with std::vector
This patch replaces the usage of VEC to store pointers to probe_ops with
an std::vector. The sole usage of that vector type is one global
variable that holds the ops for the various kinds of probes, so this is
pretty straightforward (no allocation/deallocation issues).

gdb/ChangeLog:

	* probe.h (probe_ops_cp): Remove typedef.
	(DEF_VEC_P (probe_ops_cp)): Remove.
	(all_probe_ops): Change type to std::vector.

1eac6bea98 Make collect_probes return an std::vector
Change collect_probes so it returns an std::vector<bound_probe> instead
of a VEC(bound_probe_s). This allows removing some cleanups. It also
seems like enable_probes_command and disable_probes_command were not
freeing that vector.

The comparison function compare_probes needs to be updated to return a
bool indicating whether the first parameter is "less than" the second
parameter.

I defined two constructors to bound_probe. The default constructor is
needed, for example, so the instance in struct bp_location can be
constructed without parameters. The constructor with parameters is
useful so we can use emplace_back and pass the values directly.

The s390 builder on the buildbot shows a weird failure that I can't
explain:

../../binutils-gdb/gdb/elfread.c: In function void probe_key_free(bfd*, void*):
../../binutils-gdb/gdb/elfread.c:1346:8: error: types may not be defined in a for-range-declaration [-Werror]
   for (struct probe *probe : *probes)
        ^~~~~~

I guess it's a bug with that specific version< of the compiler, since no
other gcc gives me that error. It is using:

  g++ (GCC) 6.3.1 20161221 (Red Hat 6.3.1-1)

Any idea about this problem?

gdb/ChangeLog:

	* probe.h (struct bound_probe): Define constructors.
	* probe.c (bound_probe_s): Remove typedef.
	(DEF_VEC_O (bound_probe_s)): Remove VEC.

aaa63a3190 Make probe_ops::get_probes fill an std::vector
This patch changes one usage of VEC to std::vector. It is a relatively
straightforward 1:1 change. The implementations of
sym_probe_fns::sym_get_probes return a borrowed reference to their probe
vectors, meaning that the caller should not free it. In the new code, I
made them return a const reference to the vector.

This patch and the following one were tested by the buildbot. I didn't
see any failures that looked related to this one.

cb791d5948 Make extract_arg return a std::string
Change extract_arg to return a std::string and fix up all the users.
I think string is mildly better than unique_xmalloc_ptr<char>, when
possible, because it provides a more robust API.

I changed the error messages emitted from find_location_by_number to
avoid either writing to a string or an extra allocation; this can be
changed but I thought that the new message was not any less clear.
You can see an example in the testsuite patch.

f1735a53a6 Rename _const functions to use overloading instead
This renames a few functions -- skip_spaces_const,
skip_to_space_const, get_number_const, extract_arg_const -- to drop
the "_const" suffix and instead rely on overloading.

This makes future const fixes simpler by reducing the number of lines
that must be changed. I think it is also not any less clear, as all
these functions have the same interface as their non-const versions by
design. Furthermore there's an example of using an overload in-tree
already, namely check_for_argument.

This patch was largely created using some perl one-liners; then a few
fixes were applied by hand.

51abb42130 Kill init_sal
Instead, make symtab_and_line initialize its members itself. Many
symtab_and_line declarations are moved to where the object is
initialized at the same time both for clarity and to avoid double
initialization. A few functions, like e.g., find_frame_sal are
adjusted to return the sal using normal function return instead of an
output parameter likewise to avoid having to default-construct a sal
and then immediately have the object overwritten.

gdb/ChangeLog:
2017-09-04  Pedro Alves  <palves@redhat.com>

	* ada-lang.c (is_known_support_routine): Move sal declaration to
	where it is initialized.

6c5b2ebeac struct symtabs_and_lines -> std::vector<symtab_and_line>
This replaces "struct symtabs_and_lines" with
std::vector<symtab_and_line> in most cases. This removes a number of
cleanups.

In some cases, the sals objects do not own the sals they point at.
Instead they point at some sal that lives on the stack. Typically
something like this:

  struct symtab_and_line sal;
  struct symtabs_and_lines sals;

  // fill in sal

  sals.nelts = 1;
  sals.sals = &sal;

  // use sals

Instead of switching those cases to std::vector too, such usages are
replaced by gdb::array_view<symtab_and_line> instead. This avoids
introducing heap allocations.

gdb/ChangeLog:
2017-09-04  Pedro Alves  <palves@redhat.com>

	* ax-gdb.c (agent_command_1): Use range-for.
	* break-catch-throw.c (re_set_exception_catchpoint): Update.
	* breakpoint.c: Include "common/array-view.h".
	(init_breakpoint_sal, create_breakpoint_sal): Change sals
	parameter from struct symtabs_and_lines to
	array_view<symtab_and_line>.  Adjust.  Use range-for.  Update.
	(breakpoint_sals_to_pc): Change sals parameter from struct
	symtabs_and_lines to std::vector reference.
	(check_fast_tracepoint_sals): Change sals parameter from struct
	symtabs_and_lines to std::array_view.  Use range-for.
	(decode_static_tracepoint_spec): Return a std::vector instead of
	symtabs_and_lines.  Update.
	(create_breakpoint): Update.
	(break_range_command, until_break_command, clear_command): Update.
	(base_breakpoint_decode_location, bkpt_decode_location)
	(bkpt_probe_create_sals_from_location)
	(bkpt_probe_decode_location, tracepoint_decode_location)
	(tracepoint_probe_decode_location)
	(strace_marker_create_sals_from_location): Return a std::vector
	instead of symtabs_and_lines.
	(strace_marker_create_breakpoints_sal): Update.
	(strace_marker_decode_location): Return a std::vector instead of
	symtabs_and_lines.  Update.

This patch changes various places to use ui_out_emit_tuple,
eliminating a number of cleanups. This patch only tackles "easy"

obvious replacement.

ffc2605c41 Introduce event_location_up
This removes make_cleanup_delete_event_location and instead changes
the various location functions to return an event_location_up, a new
unique_ptr typedef.

This is largely straightforward, but be sure to examine the
init_breakpoint_sal change. I believe the code I deleted there is
dead, because "location != NULL" can never be true in that branch; but
you should double-check.

112e8700a6 Class-ify ui_out
This patch finalizes the C++ conversion of the ui-out subsystem, by
turning the ui_out and ui_out_impl structures into a single class
hierarchy. ui_out functions are turned into virtual methods of that new
class, so as a result there are a lot of call sites to update.

In the previous version of the patchset, there were separate ui_out and
ui_out_impl classes, but it wasn't really useful and added boilerplate.
In this version there is simply an ui_out base class that is
extended for CLI, TUI and MI.

It's a bit hard to maintain a ChangeLog for such a big patch, I did my
best but I'm sure there are some missing or outdated info in there...

c2f4122d5c Limit breakpoint re-set to the current program space
Currently, we always re-set all locations of all breakpoints. This
commit makes us re-set only locations of the current program space.

If we loaded symbols to a program space (e.g., "file" command or some
shared library was loaded), GDB must run through all breakpoints and
determine if any new locations need to be added to the breakpoint.
However, there's no reason to recreate locations for _other_ program
spaces, as those haven't changed.

Similarly, when we create a new inferior, through e.g., a fork, GDB
must run through all breakpoints and determine if any new locations
need to be added to the breakpoint. There's no reason to destroy the
locations of the parent inferior and other inferiors. We know those
won't change.

In addition to being inneficient, resetting breakpoints of inferiors
that are currently running is problematic, because:

 - some targets can't read memory while the inferior is running.

 - the inferior might exit while we're re-setting its breakpoints,
   which may confuse prologue skipping.

I went through all the places where we call breakpoint_re_set, and it
seems to me that all can be changed to only re-set locations of the
current program space.

The patch that reversed threads order in "info threads" etc. happened
to make gdb.threads/fork-plus-thread.exp expose this problem when
testing on x86/-m32. The problem was latent and masked out by chance
by the code-cache:

 https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2016-01/msg00213.html

Tested on x86-64 F20, native (-m64/-m32) and extended-remote
gdbserver.

Fixes the regression discussed in the url above with --target_board=unix/-m32:

 -FAIL: gdb.threads/fork-plus-threads.exp: detach-on-fork=off: inferior 1 exited
 +PASS: gdb.threads/fork-plus-threads.exp: detach-on-fork=off: inferior 1 exited
 -FAIL: gdb.threads/fork-plus-threads.exp: detach-on-fork=off: no threads left (timeout)
 -FAIL: gdb.threads/fork-plus-threads.exp: detach-on-fork=off: only inferior 1 left (the program exited)
 +PASS: gdb.threads/fork-plus-threads.exp: detach-on-fork=off: no threads left
 +PASS: gdb.threads/fork-plus-threads.exp: detach-on-fork=off: only inferior 1 left

224c3ddb89 Add casts to memory allocation related calls
Most allocation functions (if not all) return a void* pointing to the
allocated memory. In C++, we need to add an explicit cast when
assigning the result to a pointer to another type (which is the case
more often than not).

The content of this patch is taken from Pedro's branch, from commit
"(mostly) auto-generated patch to insert casts needed for C++". I
validated that the changes make sense and manually reflowed the code to
make it respect the coding style. I also found multiple places where I
could use XNEW/XNEWVEC/XRESIZEVEC/etc.

Thanks a lot to whoever did that automated script to insert casts, doing
it completely by hand would have taken a ridiculous amount of time.

Only files built on x86 with --enable-targets=all are modified. This
means that all other -nat.c files are untouched and will have to be
dealt with later by using appropiate compilers. Or maybe we can try to
build them with a regular g++ just to know where to add casts, I don't
know.

I built-tested this with --enable-targets=all and reg-tested.

Here's the changelog entry, which was not too bad to make despite the
size, thanks to David Malcom's script. I fixed some bits by hand, but
there might be some wrong parts left (hopefully not).

f00aae0f7b Explicit locations: use new location API
This patch converts the code base to use the new struct event_location
API being introduced. This patch preserves the current functionality and
adds no new features.

The "big picture" API usage introduced by this patch may be illustrated
with a simple exmaple. Where previously developers would write:

void
my_command (char *arg, int from_tty)
{
   create_breakpoint (..., arg, ...);
   ...
}

one now uses:

void
my_command (char *arg, int from_tty)
{
   struct event_locaiton *location;
   struct cleanup *back_to;

   location = string_to_event_locaiton (&arg, ...);
   back_to = make_cleanup_delete_event_location (location);
   create_breakpoint (..., location, ...);
   do_cleanups (back_to);
}

Linespec-decoding functions (now called location-decoding) such as
decode_line_full no longer skip argument pointers over processed input.
That functionality has been moved into string_to_event_location as
demonstrated above.

9aca2ff83e New commands enable probe' and disable probe'.
This patch adds the above-mentioned commands to the generic probe
abstraction implemented in probe.[ch]. The effects associated to
enabling or disabling a probe depend on the type of probe being
handled, and is triggered by invoking two back-end hooks in
`probe_ops'.

In case some particular probe type does not support the notion of
enabling and/or disabling, the corresponding fields on `probe_ops' can
be initialized to NULL. This is the case of SystemTap probes.

gdb/ChangeLog:

2015-02-17  Jose E. Marchesi  <jose.marchesi@oracle.com>

	* stap-probe.c (stap_probe_ops): Add NULLs in the static
	stap_probe_ops for `enable_probe' and `disable_probe'.
	* probe.c (enable_probes_command): New function.
	(disable_probes_command): Likewise.
	(_initialize_probe): Define the cli commands `enable probe' and

	(parse_probe_linespec): New function.
	(info_probes_for_ops): Use parse_probe_linespec.
	* probe.h (probe_ops): New hooks `enable_probe' and

03e98035a2 Move compute_probe_arg' and compile_probe_arg' to probe.c
This patch moves the `compute_probe_arg' and `compile_probe_arg' functions
from stap-probe.c to probe.c. The rationale is that it is reasonable to
assume that all backends will provide the `$_probe_argN' convenience
variables, and that the user must be placed on the PC of the probe when
requesting that information. The value and type of the argument can still be
determined by the probe backend via the `pops->evaluate_probe_argument' and
`pops->compile_to_ax' handlers.

Note that a test in gdb.base/stap-probe.exp had to be adjusted because the "No
SystemTap probe at PC" messages are now "No probe at PC".

gdb/ChangeLog:

2015-02-17  Jose E. Marchesi  <jose.marchesi@oracle.com>

	* probe.c (compute_probe_arg): Moved from stap-probe.c
	(compile_probe_arg): Likewise.
	(probe_funcs): Likewise.
	* stap-probe.c (compute_probe_arg): Moved to probe.c.
	(compile_probe_arg): Likewise.
	(probe_funcs): Likewise.

gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog:

2015-02-17  Jose E. Marchesi  <jose.marchesi@oracle.com>

	* gdb.base/stap-probe.exp (stap_test): Remove "SystemTap" from
	expected message when trying to access $_probe_* convenience
	variables while not on a probe.

6f9b84910f Adapt `info probes' to support printing probes of different types.
A "probe type" (backend for the probe abstraction implemented in
probe.[ch]) can extend the information printed by `info probes' by
defining additional columns. This means that when `info probes' is
used to print all the probes regardless of their types, some of the
columns will be "not applicable" to some of the probes (like, say, the
Semaphore column only makes sense for SystemTap probes). This patch
makes `info probes' fill these slots with "n/a" marks (currently it
breaks the table) and not include headers for which no actual probe
has been found in the list of defined probes.

This patch also adds support for a new generic column "Type", that
displays the type of each probe. SystemTap probes identify themselves
as "stap" probes.

gdb/ChangeLog:

2015-02-17  Jose E. Marchesi  <jose.marchesi@oracle.com>

	* probe.c (print_ui_out_not_applicables): New function.
	(exists_probe_with_pops): Likewise.
	(info_probes_for_ops): Do not include column headers for probe
	types for which no probe has been actually found on any object.
	Also invoke `print_ui_out_not_applicables' in order to match the
	column rows with the header when probes of several types are
	listed.
	Print the "Type" column.
	* probe.h (probe_ops): Added a new probe operation `type_name'.
	* stap-probe.c (stap_probe_ops): Add `stap_type_name'.
	(stap_type_name): New function.
