bdfea17ea9 Return unique_ptr from language_defn::get_compile_context
This changes language_defn::get_compile_context to return a
unique_ptr. This makes the ownership transfer clear.

6ac373717c gdb: rename type::{arch,objfile} -> type::{arch_owner,objfile_owner}
I think this makes the names of the methods clearer, especially for the
arch. The type::arch method (which gets the arch owner, or NULL if the
type is not arch owned) is easily confused with the get_type_arch method
(which returns an arch no matter what). The name "arch_owner" will make
it intuitive that the method returns NULL if the type is not arch-owned.

Also, this frees the type::arch name, so we will be able to morph the
get_type_arch function into the type::arch method.

gdb/ChangeLog:

	* gdbtypes.h (struct type) <arch>: Rename to...
	<arch_owner>: ... this, update all users.
	<objfile>: Rename to...
	<objfile_owner>: ... this, update all users.

b10bae1875 Avoid crash when "compile" expression uses cooked register
If the "compile" command is used with an expression that happens to
require a cooked register, then GDB can crash. This patch does not
fix the bug, but at least turns the crash into an error instead.

	PR compile/25575
	* compile/compile-loc2c.c (note_register): New function.
	(pushf_register_address, pushf_register): Use it.

3637a558a5 Use std::vector for "registers_used" in compile feature
This changes the GDB compile code to use std::vector<bool> when
computing which registers are used. This is a bit more idiomatic, but
the main benefit is that it also adds some checking when the libstd++
debug mode is enabled.

9f7f6cb8d2 Remove call to reset from compile_to_object
compile_to_object declares 'error_message' and then immediately calls
reset on it. It seemed better to change it to use initialization
instead; and then I noticed that set_arguments could return a
unique_xmalloc_ptr<char> itself.

2021-01-23  Tom Tromey  <tom@tromey.com>

	* compile/compile-internal.h (class compile_instance)
	<set_arguments>: Change return type.
	* compile/compile.c (compile_to_object): Remove call to reset.
	(compile_instance::set_arguments): Change return type.

5b7d941b90 gdb: add owner-related methods to struct type
Add the following methods to struct type:

 * is_objfile_owned
 * set_owner (objfile and gdbarch overloads)
 * objfile and arch getters

Rename the fields in main_type to ensure no other code accesses them
directly. As usual, we can't make them actually private, but giving
them the `m_` prefix will help making sure they are not accessed when
not supposed to, by convention.

Remove the TYPE_OWNER macro to ensure no code uses the type_owner struct
directly.

gdb/ChangeLog:

	* gdbtypes.h (TYPE_OBJFILE_OWNED): Adjust.
	(TYPE_OWNER): Remove.
	(TYPE_OBJFILE): Adjust.
	(struct main_type) <flag_objfile_owned>: Rename to...
	<m_flag_objfile_owned>: ... this.
	<owner>: Rename to...
	<m_owner>: ... this.
	(struct type) <is_objfile_owned, set_owner, objfile, arch>: New
	methods.
	(TYPE_ALLOC): Adjust.
	* gdbtypes.c (alloc_type): Adjust.
	(alloc_type_arch): Adjust.
	(alloc_type_copy): Adjust.
	(get_type_arch): Adjust.
	(smash_type): Adjust.
	(lookup_array_range_type): Adjust.
	(recursive_dump_type): Adjust.
	(copy_type_recursive): Adjust.
	* compile/compile-c-types.c (convert_func): Adjust.
	(convert_type_basic): Adjust.
	* compile/compile-cplus-types.c (compile_cplus_convert_func):
	Adjust.
	* language.c
	(language_arch_info::type_and_symbol::alloc_type_symbol):
	Adjust.

54585eee2e Avoid crash in compile_to_object
PR 23672 points out a crash in compile_to_object. This crash came in
during a C++-ization. This patch avoids the crash.

The PR also points out another weird behavior in this code, but that
one requires some setup that I don't have here, and it seems to date
back to the introduction of the compile feature. So, it isn't
addressed here. I will leave the PR open so this bug isn't forgotten.

32f47895b5 Remove printfi_filtered and fprintfi_filtered
After seeing Simon's patch, I thought maybe it was finally time to
remove printfi_filtered and fprintfi_filtered, in favor of using the
"%*s" approach to indenting.

In this patch I took the straightforward approach of always adding a
leading "%*s", even when the format already started with "%s", to
avoid the trickier form of:

    printf ("%*s", -indent, string)

Regression tested on x86-64 Fedora 32.
Let me know what you think.

dda83cd783 gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: fix leading space vs tabs issues
Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example,
there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward
when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong
indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also
wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same
patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch.

So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully).

One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology
more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last
change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when
git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit"
anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are
interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you
already need a somewhat efficient way to do this.

Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this
trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past
the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke.
It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it).
Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't
really make archeology more difficult.

The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with
existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those
are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git
rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will
re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing
the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy).

0295dde655 gdb: Fix use after free bug in compile_object_run
In this commit:

  commit 6108fd1823
  Date:   Thu Sep 17 11:47:50 2020 -0600

      Use htab_up in type copying

A use after free bug was introduced. In compile-object-run.c, in the
function compile_object_run, the code used to look like this:

    htab_t copied_types;

    /* .... snip .... */

    /* OBJFILE may disappear while FUNC_TYPE still will be in use. */
    copied_types = create_copied_types_hash (objfile);
    func_type = copy_type_recursive (objfile, func_type, copied_types);
    htab_delete (copied_types);

    /* .... snip .... */

    call_function_by_hand_dummy (func_val, NULL, args,
                                 do_module_cleanup, data);

The copied_types table exists on the obstack of objfile, but is
deleted once the call to copy_type_recursive has been completed.

After the change the code now looks like this:

    /* OBJFILE may disappear while FUNC_TYPE still will be in use. */
    htab_up copied_types = create_copied_types_hash (objfile);
    func_type = copy_type_recursive (objfile, func_type, copied_types.get ());

    /* .... snip .... */

    call_function_by_hand_dummy (func_val, NULL, args,
                                 do_module_cleanup, data);

The copied_types is now a unique_ptr and deleted automatically when it
goes out of scope.

The problem however is that objfile, and its included obstack, may be
deleted by the call to do_module_cleanup, which is called by
call_function_by_hand_dummy.

This means that in the new code the objfile, and its obstack, are
deleted before copied_types is deleted, and as copied_types is on the
objfiles obstack, we are now reading undefined memory.

The solution in this commit is to wrap the call to
create_copied_types_hash and copy_type_recursive into a new static
helper function. The htab_up will then be deleted within the new
function's scope, before objfile is deleted.

This resolves some non-deterministic test failures I was seeing in
gdb.compile/*.exp tests.

gdb/ChangeLog:

	* compile/compile-object-run.c (create_copied_type_recursive): New
	function.
	(compile_object_run): Use new function.

6f7664a9c3 gdb: Convert la_name and la_natural_name to methods
Convert the two language_data member variables la_name and
la_natural_name to virtual methods in language_defn struct called name
and natural_name respectively.

The virtual methods in the language_defn base class are pure virtual,
as every language must implement these, and as every language has a
unique name there's no sensible default here.

Given that every language must implement these methods I did wonder
about making this data passed into the base class constructor, but in
the end I went with the virtual method approach. I'm open to changing
this approach if people prefer the constructor approach.

During updating the calls to language_defn::name I found in
add_set_language_command a place where we took la_name and then
capitalised the first letter to create a language name that could be
used in the documentation string. I replaced this with a use of
natural_name instead as this seemed a better choice, in most cases
this will make no difference, as for most languages the natural_name
is just the name with the first character in upper case, but for some
languages, for example 'Open-CL' and 'Objective-C' this is not the
case.

In the case of asm_language the name is 'asm', while the natural_name
was previously 'assembly'. I changed the natural name to 'Assembly',
this makes the documentation string case above cleaner, however, this
will change the MI output for -var-info-expression, where the 'lang'
field will change from 'assembly' to 'Assembly'. It is possible this
could be a breaking change if a front-end is relying on the existing
name.

04902b0995 Rewrite enum_flags, add unit tests, fix problems
This patch started by adding comprehensive unit tests for enum_flags.

For the testing part, it adds:

 - tests of normal expected uses of the API.

 - checks that _invalid_ uses of the API would fail to compile. I.e.,
   it validates that enum_flags really is a strong type, and that
   incorrect mixing of enum types would be caught at compile time. It
   pulls that off making use of SFINEA and C++11's decltype/constexpr.

This revealed many holes in the enum_flags API. For example, the f1
assignment below currently incorrectly fails to compile:

 enum_flags<flags> f1 = FLAG1;
 enum_flags<flags> f2 = FLAG2 | f1;

The unit tests also revealed that this useful use case doesn't work:

    enum flag { FLAG1 = 1, FLAG2 = 2 };
    enum_flags<flag> src = FLAG1;
    enum_flags<flag> f1 = condition ? src : FLAG2;

It fails to compile because enum_flags<flag> and flag are convertible
to each other.

Turns out that making enum_flags be implicitly convertible to the
backing raw enum type was not a good idea.

If we make it convertible to the underlying type instead, we fix that
ternary operator use case, and, we find cases throughout the codebase
that should be using the enum_flags but were using the raw backing
enum instead. So it's a good change overall.

Also, several operators were missing.

These holes and more are plugged by this patch, by reworking how the
enum_flags operators are implemented, and making use of C++11's
feature of being able to delete methods/functions.

There are cases in gdb/compile/ where we need to call a function in a
C plugin API that expects the raw enum. To address cases like that,
this adds a "raw()" method to enum_flags. This way we can keep using
the safer enum_flags to construct the value, and then be explicit when
we need to get at the raw enum.

This makes most of the enum_flags operators constexpr. Beyond
enabling more compiler optimizations and enabling the new unit tests,
this has other advantages, like making it possible to use operator|
with enum_flags values in switch cases, where only compile-time
constants are allowed:

    enum_flags<flags> f = FLAG1 | FLAG2;
    switch (f)
      {
      case FLAG1 | FLAG2:
	break;
      }

Currently that fails to compile.

It also switches to a different mechanism of enabling the global
operators. The current mechanism isn't namespace friendly, the new
one is.

It also switches to C++11-style SFINAE -- instead of wrapping the
return type in a SFINAE-friently structure, we use an unnamed template
parameter.  I.e., this:

  template <typename enum_type,
	    typename = is_enum_flags_enum_type_t<enum_type>>
  enum_type
  operator& (enum_type e1, enum_type e2)

instead of:

  template <typename enum_type>
  typename enum_flags_type<enum_type>::type
  operator& (enum_type e1, enum_type e2)

Note that the static_assert inside operator~() was converted to a
couple overloads (signed vs unsigned), because static_assert is too
late for SFINAE-based tests, which is important for the CHECK_VALID
unit tests.

Tested with gcc {4.8, 7.1, 9.3} and clang {5.0.2, 10.0.0}.

4b167ea1a0 Remove dwarf2_per_cu_data::text_offset
This method simply returns the text offset of the objfile associated to
the dwarf2_per_cu_data object. Since dwarf2_per_cu_data objects are
going to become objfile-independent, we can't keep this method. This
patch removes it.

Existing callers need to figure out the in the context of which objfile
this is being used, and call text_offset on it. Typically, this comes
from a symbol baton, where we store the corresponding
dwarf2_per_objfile.

ceacbf6edf gdb: remove TYPE_FIELD macro
Replace all uses of it by type::field.

Note that since type::field returns a reference to the field, some spots

bcfe6157ca Use the linkage name if it exists
The DWARF reader has had some odd code since the "physname" patches landed.

In particular, these patches caused PR symtab/12707; namely, they made
it so "set print demangle off" no longer works.

This patch attempts to fix the problem. It arranges to store the
linkage name on the symbol if it exists, and it changes the DWARF
reader so that the demangled name is no longer (usually) stored in the
symbol's "linkage name" field.

c-linkage-name.exp needed a tweak, because it started working
correctly. This conforms to what I think ought to happen, so this
seems like an improvement here.

compile-object-load.c needed a small change to use
symbol_matches_search_name rather than directly examining the linkage
name. Looking directly at the name does the wrong thing for C++.

There is still some name-related confusion in the DWARF reader:

* "physname" often refers to the logical name and not what I would
  consider to be the "physical" name;

* dwarf2_full_name, dwarf2_name, and dwarf2_physname all exist and
  return different strings -- but this seems like at least one name
  too many. For example, Fortran requires dwarf2_full_name, but other
  languages do not.

* To my surprise, dwarf2_physname prefers the form emitted by the
  demangler over the one that it computes. This seems backward to me,
  given that the partial symbol reader prefers the opposite, and it
  seems to me that this choice may perform better as well.

I didn't attempt to clean up these things. It would be good to do,
but whenever I contemplate it I get caught up in dreams of truly
rewriting the DWARF reader instead.

82ca895718 Move DWARF code to dwarf2/ subdirectory
This moves all the remaining DWARF code to the new dwarf2
subdirectory. This is just a simple renaming, with updates to
includes as needed.

Simon Marchi
6c2659886f gdb: add back declarations for _initialize functions
I'd like to enable the -Wmissing-declarations warning. However, it
warns for every _initialize function, for example:

      CXX    dcache.o
    /home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c: In function ‘void _initialize_dcache()’:
    /home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c:688:1: error: no previous declaration for ‘void _initialize_dcache()’ [-Werror=missing-declarations]
     _initialize_dcache (void)
     ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The only practical way forward I found is to add back the declarations,
which were removed by this commit:

    commit 481695ed5f
    Author: John Baldwin <jhb@FreeBSD.org>
    Date:   Sat Sep 9 11:02:37 2017 -0700

        Remove unnecessary function prototypes.

I don't think it's a big problem to have the declarations for these
functions, but if anybody has a better solution for this, I'll be happy
to use it.
