Update year range in copyright notice of binutils files
Adds two new external authors to etc/update-copyright.py to cover bfd/ax_tls.m4, and adds gprofng to dirs handled automatically, then updates copyright messages as follows: 1) Update cgen/utils.scm emitted copyrights. 2) Run "etc/update-copyright.py --this-year" with an extra external author I haven't committed, 'Kalray SA.', to cover gas testsuite files (which should have their copyright message removed). 3) Build with --enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes. 4) Check out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently. |

The newer update-copyright.py fixes file encoding too, removing cr/lf on binutils/bfdtest2.c and ld/testsuite/ld-cygwin/exe-export.exp, and embedded cr in binutils/testsuite/binutils-all/ar.exp string match. |

Revert reloc howto nits
The "HOWTO size encoding" patch put 1 as the HOWTO size arg for numerous howtos that are unused, describe dynamic relocs, are markers, or otherwise are special purpose reloc howtos that don't care about the size. The idea was to ensure no howto changed by inspecting object files. HOWTO size encoding
This changes the HOWTO macro to encode the howto.size field from a value given in bytes. This of course requires editing all target uses of HOWTO, a major pain, but makes it a little nicer to specify new target HOWTOs. The result of running etc/update-copyright.py --this-year, fixing all the files whose mode is changed by the script, plus a build with --enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes, then checking out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently. The copy of cgen was with commit d1dd5fcc38ead reverted as that commit breaks building of bfp opcodes files. |

Statically initialise target common sections
This tidies initialisation of target common sections, doing so using a static initialiser rather than via code and deleting unnecessary symbol_ptr_ptr variables (the one in asection is used instead). The patch also initialises ecoff.c:bfd_debug_section using BFD_FAKE_SECTION. That does change bfd_debug_section slightly, output_section was NULL now bfd_debug_section, and symbol_ptr_ptr was NULL now &bfd_debug_section.symbol, but I believe those changes are safe. bfd/ * ecoff.c (bfd_debug_section): Init using BFD_FAKE_SECTION. (ecoff_scom_section, ecoff_scom_symbol): Statically init using BFD_FAKE_SECTION and GLOBAL_SYM_INIT. Delete initialisation code. mmix bfd: fix bfd_assert for R_MMIX_PUSHJ_STUBBABLE against undef'd symbol
Spotted when inspecting gcc testsuite logs, but this already is
covered by the ld-mmix testsuite, it's just that the assert is ignored
since the regexp match is for a substring and not anchored.
With the anchors added but not the bugfix, the ld.log shows that the
asserts cause a non-match as intended:

Gone with the fix of course, leaving just the intended "undefined
reference" like.
I'm not going to add anchors manually for all the "error:" strings in
the test-suite, not even in the mmix parts. Sorry, but I'll just do
it for *these* specific undefined-reference tests.
Just a thought: maybe the run_dump_test "error:" string should
*automatically* get anchor marks prepended and appended for a single
line match as in the patch, "\A[^\n\r]*" prepended and \Z appended
unless either anchor mark or \r or \n is present in the regexp?

bfd_size_type to size_t
bfd_size_type was invented a long time ago in the K&R days. Many places in binutils ought to be using size_t instead (and there are lots of places that use long or unsigned long that really ought to use size_t too). Note that you can't change everything over to size_t: A 32-bit host needs a larger type than size_t to support reading and processing of 64-bit ELF object files. This patch just tidies some of the more obvious uses of bfd_size_type that could be size_t. There no doubt are more lurking in the source. Incidentally, practically all functions used for output of object files can use size_t and don't need to worry about overflow of size expressions. If you have something like symcount * sizeof (void *) when symcount is counting symbols already in memory then you know that this expression can't overflow since the size of a symbol in memory is bfd_section_* macros
This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various bfd section macros and functions. The bfd is hardly ever used and if needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind std_section special sections. Those sections shouldn't be modified anyway. The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros, replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds bfd_set_section_lma. I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling bfd_rename_section. Remove bfd stub function casts.
This patch defines a bunch of new functions to use in the BFD target structs rather than casting bfd_false or bfd_true and similar stub functions. I've also renamed the stub functions to reflect their parameters and put "error" in the name if they set bfd_error. The latter change is important since there were quite a few uses of bfd_false where setting bfd_error was inappropriate, for example in elf_backend_allow_non_load_phdr and is_target_special_symbol. * libbfd.c (_bfd_bool_bfd_false_error): Rename from bfd_false. Fix compilation of the BFD sub-directory with a gcc v8 compiler by adding extra casts.
GCC v8 issues warnings about mis-matching casts of function pointers. A previous patch tried to fix this problem by adding new dummy functions which accepted a variable number of arguments. But this introduces serious problems when compiled with other versions of gcc, (notably gcc 4.4). This patch reverts that previous solution and instead adds extra casts (to function types without a parameter list). Copying symbol type in ld script assignments
There is a call to update_definedness between code that evaluates an assignment expression value and code that transfers symbol attributes. When script assignment expressions contain DEFINED, that can mean the wrong symbol type is copied. This patch tracks symbols read during expression evaluation, rather than examining the expression and re-evaluating conditionals. Not only does this simplify the code, it also means ld can now copy symbol types in more complex expressions. An unfortunate side effect of copying symbol type for more complex expressions affects mmix, which uses PROVIDE (Main = DEFINED (Main) ? Main : (DEFINED (_start) ? _start : _start.)); in a default script. So now _start or _start. symbol type may be copied, losing the function type specially set up for Main. ELF: Call check_relocs after opening all inputs
For all ELF targers, call check_relocs after opening all inputs and
garbage collection. Since the symbol resolution is known, check_relocs
can be simplified. Also garbage collection doesn't need to undo what
check_relocs has done for symbols which have been garbage collected.
Since ELF targets never see the removed sections, gc_sweep_hook can be
removed from elf_backend_data and we can avoid GOT/PLT with garbage
collection now.
Set link_info.check_relocs_after_open_input to TRUE for all linker
targets which use ELF linker and update garbage collection tests to
remove unused GOT section.
ldemul_after_check_relocs is added for powerpc to support --secure-plt,
--bss-plt and --sdata-got.
Tested natively without regressions on i686, x86-64 and x32. Tested
cross binutils on x86-64 without regressions for aarch64-linux,
alpha-linux, arm-linux, bfin-elf, cr16-elf, cris-elf, crx-elf, frv-linux,
hppa64-linux, hppa-linux, ia64-linux, lm32-elf, m32r-elf, m68k-linux,

Make bfd_error_handler_type like vprintf
It was like printf, which means you can't use bfd_set_error_handler to hook in a function to do something and then call the original handler. Return void from linker callbacks
The ldmain.c implementation of these linker callback functions always return true, so any code handling a false return is dead. What's more, some of the bfd backends abort if ever a false return is seen, and there seems to be some confusion in gdb's compile-object-load.c. The return value was never meant to be "oh yes, a multiple_definition error occurred", but rather "out of memory or other catastrophic failure". This patch removes the status return on the callbacks that always return true. I kept the return status for "notice" because that one does happen to need to return "out of memory". include/ * bfdlink.h (struct bfd_link_callbacks): Update comments. Add output_type to bfd_link_info
The "shared" field in bfd_link_info is set for both DSO and and PIE.
There are separate fields for executable and relocatable outputs. This
patch adds an "output_type" field:

and a "pic" field to bfd_link_info to replace shared, executable and
relocatable fields so that we can use the "output_type" field to check

Make bfd.link_next field a union
