39ef2f6256 Replace some more qsort calls with std::sort
This has better typesafety, avoids a function pointer indirection,
and can benefit from inlining.

e43b10e10e Remove the ui_out_style_kind enum
This removes the ui_out_style_kind enum, in favor of simply using
ui_file_style references.  This simplifies the code somewhat.

046bebe1c0 Add more styling to "disassemble"
This adds more styling to the disassemble command.  In particular,
addresses and function names in the disassembly are now styled.

This required fixing a small latent bug in set_output_style.  This
function always passed NULL to emit_style_escape; but when writing to
a file other than gdb_stdout, it should emit the style escape
directly.  (FWIW this is another argument for better integrating the
pager with ui_file and getting rid of this entire layer.)

2dc80cf8a5 Restrict use of minsym names when printing addresses in disassembled code
build_address_symbolic contains some code which causes it to
prefer the minsym over the the function symbol in certain cases.
The cases where this occurs are the same as the "certain pathological
cases" that used to exist in find_frame_funname().

This commit largely disables that code; it will only prefer the
minsym when the address of minsym is identical to that of the address
under consideration AND the function address for the symbtab sym is
not the same as the address under consideration.

So, without this change, when using the dw2-ranges-func-lo-cold
executable from the gdb.dwarf2/dw2-ranges-func.exp test, GDB exhibits
the following behavior:

dw2-ranges-func-hi-cold executable from the same test, GDB

This is inconsistent behavior.  When foo_cold is at a lower
address than the function's entry point, the symtab symbol (foo)
is displayed along with a large positive offset which would wrap
around the address space if the address space were only 32 bits wide.
(A later patch fixes this problem by displaying negative offsets.)

This commit makes the behavior uniform for both the "lo-cold" and
"hi-cold" cases:

In both cases, the symbol shown for the address at which foo_cold
resides is shown as <foo_cold>.  Subsequent offsets are shown as
either negative or positive offsets from the entry pc for foo.

When disassembling a function, care must be taken to NOT display
<+0> as the offset for the second range.  For this reason, I found
it necessary to add the "prefer_sym_over_minsym" parameter to
build_address_symbolic.  The type of this flag is a bool; do_demangle
ought to be a bool also, so I made this change at the same time.

gdb/ChangeLog:

	* valprint.h (build_address_symbolic): Add "prefer_sym_over_minsym"
	parameter.  Change type of "do_demangle" to bool.
	* disasm.c (gdb_pretty_print_disassembler::pretty_print_insn):
	Pass suitable "prefer_sym_over_minsym" flag to
	build_address_symbolic().  Don't output "+" for negative offsets.

	build_address_symbolic to include a "prefer_sym_over_minsym"
	flag.
	(build_address_symbolic): Add "prefer_sym_over_minsym" parameter.
	Restrict cases in which use of minimal symbol is preferred to that
	of a found symbol.  Update comments.

This renames ui_out::field_int to field_signed, and field_fmt_int to
field_fmt_signed; and changes the type of the "value" parameter from
int to LONGEST.

Tested by the buildbot.

This adds field_unsigned and changes various places using field_fmt
with "%u" to use this instead.  This also replaces an existing

268a13a5a3 Rename common to gdbsupport
This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the
top level.

This patch just renames the "common" directory.  The idea is to do
this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then
move the directory to the top.  This approach makes the patches a bit
more tractable.

I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory.  However, as this
patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too
much difficulty.

Tested by the buildbot.

89549d7f4d Remove trailing newlines from help text
I noticed recently that some command had a trailing newline in its
"help" output.  So, I temporarily hacked cli-decode.c to print
something when a new command was installed that had a trailing newline
in its help message, and wrote this patch, which removes all the ones
I could find this way.  (There could still be a few more in *-nat
files.)

Tested on x86-64 Fedora 29.

81f47ac29f testsuite: Disable some tests when logging
Fix up all failures encountered when running the testsuite with
GDB_DEBUG="infrun".

Some tests rely on enabling debugging for various components.  With
debugging on, this will be lost to the debug file.

Disable separate tty for mi tests when debugging.  This currently
does not work.

disasm.c should send errors to the stderr instead of the logfile.

Note that enabling debug for other components might still cause
additional errors above what has been fixed here.

4de283e4b5 Revert the header-sorting patch
Andreas Schwab and John Baldwin pointed out some bugs in the header
sorting patch; and I noticed that the output was not correct when
limited to a subset of files (a bug in my script).

So, I'm reverting the patch.  I may try again after fixing the issues
pointed out.

42a4f53d2b Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.

Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.

cbe5657196 Add output styles to gdb
This adds some output styling to the CLI.

A style is currently a foreground color, a background color, and an
intensity (dim or bold).  (This list could be expanded depending on
terminal capabilities.)

A style can be applied while printing.  For ui-out, this is done by
passing the style constant as an argument.  For low-level cases,
fprintf_styled and fputs_styled are provided.

Users can control the style via a number of new set/show commands.  In
the interest of not typing many nearly-identical documentation
strings, I automated this.  On the down side, this is not very
i18n-friendly.

I've chose some default colors to use.  I think it would be good to
enable this by default, so that when users start the new gdb, they
will see the new feature.

Stylizing is done if TERM is set and is not "dumb".  This could be
improved when the TUI is available by using the curses has_colors
call.  That is, the lowest layer could call this without committing to
using curses everywhere; see my other patch for TUI colorizing.

I considered adding a new "set_style" method to ui_file.  However,
because the implementation had to interact with the pager code, I
didn't take this approach.  But, one idea might be to put the isatty
check there and then have it defer to the lower layers.

b926417afa Simple -Wshadow=local fixes
This fixes all the straightforward -Wshadow=local warnings in gdb.  A
few standard approaches are used here:

* Renaming an inner (or outer, but more commonly inner) variable;
* Lowering a declaration to avoid a clash;
* Moving a declaration into a more inner scope to avoid a clash,
  including the special case of moving a declaration into a loop header.

I did not consider any of the changes in this patch to be particularly
noteworthy, though of course they should all still be examined.

This surprised me a little, so this patch adds some text to explain
the situation when an architecture does not have disassembler options.

While there I noticed one more spot where gdb was not using the GNU
style for metasyntactic variables.  This patch fixes this as well.

471b9d1507 GDB PR tdep/8282: MIPS: Wire in `set disassembler-options'
Implement MIPS target support for passing options to the disassembler,
complementing commit 65b48a8140 ("GDB: Add support for the new
set/show disassembler-options commands.").

This includes options that expect an argument, so adjust the generic
code and data structures used so as to handle such options.  So as to
give backends syntax flexibility no specific delimiter has been defined
to separate options from their respective arguments, so it has to be
included as the last character of the option name.  Completion code
however has not been adjusted and consequently option arguments cannot
be completed at this time.

Also the MIPS target has non-empty defaults for the options, so that ABI
names for the general-purpose registers respect our `set mips abi ...'
setting rather than always being determined from the ELF headers of the
binary file selected.  Handle these defaults as implicit options, never
shown to the user and always prepended to the user-specified options, so
that the latters can override the defaults.

The resulting output for the MIPS target is as follows:

lists being wrapped, but also the amount of white space separating
options from the respective descriptions.  The relevant part the new
code is now also used by `objdump --help', which means these formatting
changes apply to both outputs, except for argument list wrapping, which
is GDB-specific.

This also adds a separating new line between the heading and option
lists where descriptions are provided, hence:

c7110220be Change build_address_symbolic to return std::string
This changes two out parameters of build_address_symbolic to be
std::string, and updates the callers.  This allows removing some
cleanups.

This patch also moves the declaration of build_address_symbolic out of
defs.h.  I think that many things in defs.h should be elsewhere
instead.  In this case, I moved the declaration to valprint.h, becuase
there is no "printcmd.h" -- but perhaps it would be better to
introduce that instead.

Tested by the buildbot.

This patch removes some unused variables, found with -Wunused.  I have
not removed everything reported by -Wunused, because some expressions
such as

  struct type *arg_type = check_typedef (value_type);

in bfin-tdep.c could have an unexpected but important side-effect.  I

30f0b10158 Remove cleanups from disasm.c

f1735a53a6 Rename _const functions to use overloading instead
This renames a few functions -- skip_spaces_const,
skip_to_space_const, get_number_const, extract_arg_const -- to drop
the "_const" suffix and instead rely on overloading.

This makes future const fixes simpler by reducing the number of lines
that must be changed.  I think it is also not any less clear, as all
these functions have the same interface as their non-const versions by
design.  Furthermore there's an example of using an overload in-tree
already, namely check_for_argument.

This patch was largely created using some perl one-liners; then a few
fixes were applied by hand.

9a24775b97 Introduce gdb_disassembly_flags
For some reason I ended up staring at some of the "int flags" in
btrace-related code, and I got confused because I had no clue what the
flags where supposed to indicate.

Fix that by using enum_flags, so that:
  #1 - it's clear from the type what the flags are about, and
  #2 - the compiler can catch mismatching mistakes

eb3ff9a551 Introduce class completion_tracker & rewrite completion<->readline interaction
This patch reworks the whole completion machinery, and prepares it
for later enhancements.

Adds a new "completion_tracker" class that is meant to hold everything
about the state of the current completion operation.

This class now has the responsibility of tracking the list of
completion matches, and checking whether the max completions limit has
been reached.  You can look at this as this patch starting out by
C++fying the existing "completion_tracker" in symtab.c (it's just an
htab_t typedef currently), moving it to completer.h/c, and then making
it a class/generalizing/enhancing it.

Unlike with the current tracking, completion_tracker now checks
whether the limit has been reached on each completion match list
insertion.  This both simplifies the max-completions handling code
(maybe_add_completion_enum is gone, for example), and is a
prerequisite for follow up patches.

The current completion_tracker is only used for symbol completions,
and the symbol code gets at the current instance via globals.  This
patch cleans that up by adding a completion_tracker reference to the
signature of the completion functions, and passing the tracker around
everywhere necessary.

Then, the patch changes how the completion match list is handed over
to readline.  Currently, we're using the rl_completion_entry_function
readline entry point, and the patch switches to
rl_attempted_completion_function.  A following patch will want to let
GDB itself decide the common completion prefix between all matches
(what readline calls the "lowest common denominator"), instead of
having readline compute it, and that's not possible with the
rl_completion_entry_function entry point.  Also,
rl_attempted_completion_function lets GDB hand over the match list to
readline as an array in one go instead of passing down matches one by
one, so from that angle it's a nicer entry point anyway.

Lastly, the patch catches exceptions around the readline entry points,
because we can't let C++ exceptions cross readline.  We handle that in
the readline input entry point, but the completion entry point isn't
guarded, so GDB can abort if completion throws.  E.g., in current
master:

This patch fixes that.  This will be exercised in the new tests added
later on in the series.

f995bbe8e6 -Wwrite-strings: Constify struct disassemble_info's disassembler_options field
The memory disassemble_info::disassembler_options points to is always
owned by the client.  I.e., that field is an non-owning, observing
pointer.  Thus const makes sense.

Are the include/ and opcodes/ bits OK?

Tested on x86_64 Fedora 23, built with --enable-targets=all.

65b48a8140 GDB: Add support for the new set/show disassembler-options commands.
This commit adds support to GDB so that it can modify the disassembler-options
value that is passed to the disassembler, similar to objdump's -M option.
Currently, the only supported targets are ARM, PowerPC and S/390, but
adding support for a new target(s) is not difficult.

8b172ce7c9 Reuse buffers across gdb_pretty_print_insn calls
gdb_pretty_print_insn allocates and destroys a couple local buffers
each time it is called, which can be many times when disassembling a
region of memory.  Avoid that overhead by adding a new class that
holds the buffers and making gdb_pretty_print_insn a method of that
class, so that the buffers can be reused across calls.

d7e747318f Eliminate make_cleanup_ui_file_delete / make ui_file a class hierarchy
This patch starts from the desire to eliminate
make_cleanup_ui_file_delete, but then goes beyond.  It makes ui_file &
friends a real C++ class hierarchy, and switches temporary
ui_file-like objects to stack-based allocation.

- mem_fileopen -> string_file

mem_fileopen is replaced with a new string_file class that is treated
as a value class created on the stack.  This alone eliminates most
make_cleanup_ui_file_delete calls, and, simplifies code a whole lot
(diffstat shows around 1k loc dropped.)

string_file's internal buffer is a std::string, thus the "string" in
the name.  This simplifies the implementation much, compared to
mem_fileopen, which managed growing its internal buffer manually.

- ui_file_as_string, ui_file_strdup, ui_file_obsavestring all gone

The new string_file class has a string() method that provides direct
writable access to the internal std::string buffer.  This replaced
ui_file_as_string, which forced a copy of the same data the stream had
inside.  With direct access via a writable reference, we can instead
move the string out of the string_stream, avoiding deep string
copying.

Related, ui_file_xstrdup calls are replaced with xstrdup'ping the
stream's string, and ui_file_obsavestring is replaced by
obstack_copy0.

With all those out of the way, getting rid of the weird ui_file_put
mechanism was possible.

- New ui_file::printf, ui_file::puts, etc. methods

These simplify / clarify client code.  I considered splitting
client-code changes, like these, e.g.:

call stb.printf etc..  I didn't do that split, because (when I tried),
it turned out to be pointless make-work: the first pass would have to
touch the fprintf_unfiltered line anyway, to replace "stb" with
"&stb".

- gdb_fopen replaced with stack-based objects

This avoids the need for cleanups or unique_ptr's.  I.e., this:

"nowhere" are adjusted to instead refer to a new 'null_stream' global
stream.

- TUI's tui_sfileopen eliminated.  TUI's ui_file much simplified

The TUI's ui_file was serving a dual purpose.  It supported being used
as string buffer, and supported being backed by a stdio FILE.  The
string buffer part is gone, replaced by using of string_file.  The
'FILE *' support is now much simplified, by making the TUI's ui_file
inherit from stdio_file.

187808b04f Add back gdb_pretty_print_insn
ui_file_rewind is a ui_file method that only really works with mem
buffer files, and is a nop on other ui_file types.  It'd be desirable
to eliminate it from the base ui_file interface, and move it to the
"mem_fileopen" subclass of ui_file instead.  A following patch does
just that.

Unfortunately, there are a couple references to ui_file_rewind inside
gdb_disassembler::pretty_print_insn that were made harder to eliminate
with the recent addition of the gdb_disassembler wrapper.

Before the gdb_disassembler wrapper was added, in commit
e47ad6c0bd ("Refactor disassembly code"), gdb_pretty_print_insn
used to be passed a ui_file pointer as argument, and it was simple to
adjust that pointer be a "mem_fileopen" ui_file pointer instead, since
there's only one gdb_pretty_print_insn caller.

That commit made gdb_pretty_print_insn be a method of
gdb_disassembler, and removed the method's ui_file parameter at the
same time, replaced by referencing the gdb_disassembler's stream
instead.  The trouble is that a gdb_disassembler can be instantiated
with a pointer any kind of ui_file.  Casting the gdb_disassembler's
stream to a mem_fileopen ui_file inside
gdb_disassembler::pretty_print_insn in order to call the reset method
would be gross hack.

The fix here is to:

 - make gdb_disassembler::pretty_print_insn a be free function again
   instead of a method of gdb_disassembler.  I.e., bring back
   gdb_pretty_print_insn.

 - but, don't add back the ui_file * parameter.  Instead, move the
   mem_fileopen allocation inside.  That is a better interface, given
   that the ui_file is only ever used as temporary scratch buffer as
   an implementation detail of gdb_pretty_print_insn.  The function's
   real "where to send output" parameter is the ui_out pointer.  (A
   following patch will add back buffer reuse across invocations
   differently).

 - don't add back a disassemble_info pointer either.  That used to be
   necessary for this bit:

	  err = m_di.read_memory_func (pc, &data, 1, &m_di);
	  if (err != 0)
	    m_di.memory_error_func (err, pc, &m_di);

   ... but AFAIK, it's not really necessary.  We can replace those
   three lines with a call to read_code.  This seems to fix a
   regression even, because before commit d8b49cf0c8 ("Don't throw
   exception in dis_asm_memory_error"), that memory_error_func call
   would throw an error/exception, but now it only records the error
   in the gdb_disassembler's m_err_memaddr field.  (read_code throws
   on error.)

With all these, gdb_pretty_print_insn is completely layered on top of
gdb_disassembler only using the latter's public API.

d8b49cf0c8 Don't throw exception in dis_asm_memory_error
Hi,
GDB calls some APIs from opcodes to do disassembly and provide some
call backs.  This model makes troubles on C++ exception unwinding,
because GDB is a C++ program, and opcodes is still compiled as C.

C++ exception unwinder can't go across frame #11 unless it has
unwind table.  However, C program on many architectures doesn't
have it in default.  As a result, GDB aborts, which is described
in PR 20939.

This is not the first time we see this kind of problem.  We've
had a commit 89525768cd
"Propagate GDB/C++ exceptions across readline using sj/lj-based TRY/CATCH".
We can fix the disassembly bug in a similar way, this is the option one.

Since opcodes is built with gdb, we fix this problem in a different
way as we did for the same issue with readline.  Instead of throwing
exception in dis_asm_memory_error, we record the failed memory
address, and throw exception when GDB returns from opcodes disassemblers.

e47ad6c0bd Refactor disassembly code
This patch addes class gdb_disassembler, and refactor
code to use it.  The gdb_disassembler object is saved
in disassember_info.application_data.  However,
disassember_info.application_data is already used by
gdb for arm, mips spu, and scm-disasm.  In arm and mips,
.application_data is gdbarch, but we can still get gdbarch
from gdb_disassember.

The use of application_data in spu is a little bit
complicated.  It creates its own disassemble_info, and
save spu_dis_asm_data in .application_data.  This will
overwrite the pointer to gdb_disassembler, so we need
to find another place to save spu_dis_asm_data.  I
extend disassemble_info, and put "id" there.

This removes make_cleanup_htab_delete in favor of destructors,

112e8700a6 Class-ify ui_out
This patch finalizes the C++ conversion of the ui-out subsystem, by
turning the ui_out and ui_out_impl structures into a single class
hierarchy.  ui_out functions are turned into virtual methods of that new
class, so as a result there are a lot of call sites to update.

In the previous version of the patchset, there were separate ui_out and
ui_out_impl classes, but it wasn't really useful and added boilerplate.
In this version there is simply an ui_out base class that is
extended for CLI, TUI and MI.

ac29888840 Remove some variables but call functions for side effects
This patch consolidates the (possibly-questionable) spots where we
remove a declaration but continue to call some function for side
effects.  In a couple of cases it wasn't entirely clear to me that
this mattered; and in some other cases it might be more aesthetically
pleasing to use ATTRIBUTE_UNUSED.  So, I broke this out into a
separate patch for simpler review.

8d297bbf60 Type-safe wrapper for enum flags
This patch fixes C++ build errors like this:

                                   ^

This is a case of enums used as bit flags.  Unlike "regular" enums,
these values are supposed to be or'ed together.  However, in C++, the
type of "(ENUM1 | ENUM2)" is int, and you then can't assign an int to
an enum variable without a cast.  That means that this:

  enum foo_flags flags = 0;

  if (...)
    flags |= FOO_FLAG1;
  if (...)
    flags |= FOO_FLAG2;

... would have to be written as:

  enum foo_flags flags = (enum foo_flags) 0;

  if (...)
    flags = (enum foo_flags) (flags | FOO_FLAG1);
  if (...)
    flags = (enum foo_flags) (flags | FOO_FLAG2);

which is ... ugly.  Alternatively, we'd have to use an int for the
variable's type, which isn't ideal either.

This patch instead adds an "enum flags" class.  "enum flags" are
exactly the enums where the values are bits that are meant to be ORed
together.

This allows writing code like the below, while with raw enums this
would fail to compile without casts to enum type at the assignments to
'f':

  enum some_flag
  {
     flag_val1 = 1 << 1,
     flag_val2 = 1 << 2,
     flag_val3 = 1 << 3,
     flag_val4 = 1 << 4,
  };
  DEF_ENUM_FLAGS_TYPE(enum some_flag, some_flags)

  some_flags f = flag_val1 | flag_val2;
  f |= flag_val3;

It's also possible to assign literal zero to an enum flags variable
(meaning, no flags), dispensing either adding an awkward explicit "no
value" value to the enumeration or the cast to assignments from 0.
For example:

  some_flags f = 0;
  f |= flag_val3 | flag_val4;

Note that literal integers other than zero do fail to compile:

  some_flags f = 1; // error

C is still supported -- DEF_ENUM_FLAGS_TYPE is just a typedef in that
case.

a50a402676 disasm: add struct disasm_insn to describe to-be-disassembled instruction
The "record instruction-history" command prints for each instruction in
addition to the instruction's disassembly:

  - the instruction number in the recorded execution trace
  - a '?' before the instruction if it was executed speculatively

To allow the "record instruction-history" command to use GDB's disassembly
infrastructure, we extend gdb_pretty_print_insn to optionally print those
additional fields and export the function.

Add a new struct disasm_insn to add additional fields describing the
to-be-disassembled instruction.  The additional fields are:

  number            an optional instruction number, zero if omitted.
  is_speculative    a predicate saying whether the instruction was
                    executed speculatively.

If non-zero, the instruction number is printed first.  It will also appear
as a new optional field "insn-number" in MI.  The field will be present if
insn_num is non-zero.

If is_speculative is set, speculative execution will be indicated by a "?"
following the new instruction number field.  Unless the PC is omitted, it
will overwrite the first byte of the PC prefix.  It will appear as a new
optional field "is-speculative" in MI.  The field will contain "?" and will
be present if is_speculative is set.

The speculative execution indication is guarded by a new flag
DISASSEMBLY_SPECULATION.

Replace the PC parameter of gdb_pretty_print_insn with a pointer to the above
struct.  GDB's "disassemble" command does not use the new fields.
