Remove some includes reported as unused by clangd. Add some includes in
other files that were previously relying on the transitive include.

Now that defs.h, server.h and common-defs.h are included via the
`-include` option, it is no longer necessary for source files to include
them. Remove all the inclusions of these files I could find. Update
the generation scripts where relevant.

This commit is the result of the following actions:
- Running gdb/copyright.py to update all of the copyright headers to
include 2024,
- Manually updating a few files the copyright.py script told me to
update, these files had copyright headers embedded within the
file,
- Regenerating gdbsupport/Makefile.in to refresh it's copyright
date,
- Using grep to find other files that still mentioned 2023. If
these files were updated last year from 2022 to 2023 then I've
updated them this year to 2024.
I'm sure I've probably missed some dates. Feel free to fix them up as
you spot them.
I'd like to move some things so they become methods on struct ui. But
first, I think that struct ui and the related things are big enough to
deserve their own file, instead of being scattered through top.{c,h} and
event-top.c.

As described in the previous commit for this series, I became
concerned that there might be instances in which a QUIT (due to either
a SIGINT or SIGTERM) might not cause execution to return to the top
level. In some (though very few) instances, it is okay to not
propagate the exception for a Ctrl-C / SIGINT, but I don't think that
it is ever okay to swallow the exception caused by a SIGTERM.
Allowing that to happen would definitely be a deviation from the
current behavior in which GDB exits upon receipt of a SIGTERM.
I looked at all cases where an exception handler catches a
gdb_exception. Handlers which did NOT need modification were those
which satisifed one or more of the following conditions:
1) There is no call path to maybe_quit() in the try block. I used a
static analysis tool to help make this determination. In
instances where the tool didn't provide an answer of "yes, this
call path can result in maybe_quit() being called", I reviewed it
by hand.
2) The catch block contains a throw for conditions that it
doesn't want to handle; these "not handled" conditions
must include the quit exception and the new "forced quit" exception.
3) There was (also) a catch for gdb_exception_quit.
Any try/catch blocks not meeting the above conditions could
potentially swallow a QUIT exception.
My first thought was to add catch blocks for gdb_exception_quit and
then rethrow the exception. But Pedro pointed out that this can be
handled without adding additional code by simply catching
gdb_exception_error instead. That's what this patch series does.
There are some oddball cases which needed to be handled differently,
plus the extension languages, but those are handled in later patches.

This commit is the result of running the gdb/copyright.py script,
which automated the update of the copyright year range for all
source files managed by the GDB project to be updated to include
year 2023.
Now that filtered and unfiltered output can be treated identically, we
can unify the printf family of functions. This is done under the name
"gdb_printf". Most of this patch was written by script.
This commit brings all the changes made by running gdb/copyright.py
as per GDB's Start of New Year Procedure.
For the avoidance of doubt, all changes in this commits were
performed by the script.
Turn continuations-related functions into methods of the inferior
class. This is a refactoring.

I noticed that fetch_inferior_event receives the client_data parameter
from its caller, inferior_event_handler, but doesn't actually need it.
This patch removes it. In turn, inferior_event_handler doesn't use its
parameter, so remove it too.
The `data` argument used when registering
remote_async_inferior_event_handler is changed to NULL, to avoid
confusion. It could make people think that the value passed is used
somewhere, when in fact it's not.

This converts observers from using a special source-generating script
to be plain C++. This version of the patch takes advantage of C++11
by using std::function and variadic templates; incorporates Pedro's
patches; and renames the header file to "observable.h" (this change
eliminates the need for a clean rebuild).
Note that Pedro's patches used a template lambda in tui-hooks.c, but
this failed to compile on some buildbot instances (presumably due to
differing C++ versions); I replaced this with an ordinary template
function.
Regression tested on the buildbot.

If you press Ctrl-C while GDB is processing breakpoint commands the
TRY/CATCH in inferior_event_handler catches the Quit exception and
prints it, and then if the interpreter was running a foreground
execution command, nothing re-adds stdin back in the event loop,
meaning the debug session ends up busted, because the user can't type
anything...
This was exposed by the new gdb.base/bp-cmds-continue-ctrl-c.exp
testcase added later in the series.

This patch makes the execution control code use largely the same
mechanisms in both sync- and async-capable targets. This means using
continuations and use the event loop to react to target events on sync
targets as well. The trick is to immediately mark infrun's event loop
source after resume instead of calling wait_for_inferior. Then
fetch_inferior_event is adjusted to do a blocking wait on sync
targets.
Tested on x86_64 Fedora 20, native and gdbserver, with and without
"maint set target-async off".

All callers of target_async pass it the same callback
(inferior_event_handler). Since both common code and target backends
need to be able to put the target in and out of target async mode at
any given time, there's really no way that a different callback could

the same signature as gdbserver's.

This patch splits the TRY_CATCH macro into three, so that we go from

Thus, we'll be getting rid of the local volatile exception object, and
declaring the caught exception in the catch block.
This allows reimplementing TRY/CATCH in terms of C++ exceptions when
building in C++ mode, while still allowing to build GDB in C mode
(using setjmp/longjmp), as a transition step.
TBC, after this patch, is it _not_ valid to have code between the TRY
and the CATCH blocks, like:

Just like it isn't valid to do that with C++'s native try/catch.
By switching to creating the exception object inside the CATCH block
scope, we can get rid of all the explicitly allocated volatile
exception objects all over the tree, and map the CATCH block more
directly to C++'s catch blocks.
The majority of the TRY_CATCH -> TRY+CATCH+END_CATCH conversion was
done with a script, rerun from scratch at every rebase, no manual
editing involved. After the mechanical conversion, a few places
needed manual intervention, to fix preexisting cases where we were
using the exception object outside of the TRY_CATCH block, and cases
where we were using "else" after a 'if (ex.reason) < 0)' [a CATCH
after this patch]. The result was folded into this patch so that GDB
still builds at each incremental step.
END_CATCH is necessary for two reasons:
First, because we name the exception object in the CATCH block, which
requires creating a scope, which in turn must be closed somewhere.
Declaring the exception variable in the initializer field of a for
block, like:

would avoid needing END_CATCH, but alas, in C mode, we build with C90,
which doesn't allow mixed declarations and code.
Second, because when TRY/CATCH are wired to real C++ try/catch, as
long as we need to handle cleanup chains, even if there's no CATCH
block that wants to catch the exception, we need for stop at every
frame in the unwind chain and run cleanups, then rethrow. That will
be done in END_CATCH.
After we require C++, we'll still need TRY/CATCH/END_CATCH until
cleanups are completely phased out -- TRY/CATCH in C++ mode will
save/restore the current cleanup chain, like in C mode, and END_CATCH
catches otherwise uncaugh exceptions, runs cleanups and rethrows, so
that C++ cleanups and exceptions can coexist.
IMO, this still makes the TRY/CATCH code look a bit more like a
newcomer would expect, so IMO worth it even if we weren't considering
C++.

Adjust all callers of TRY_CATCH to use TRY/CATCH/END_CATCH

If an error is thrown while handling a target event (within
fetch_inferior_event), and, the interpreter is not async (but the
target is), then GDB prints the prompt twice.
One way to see that in action is throw a QUIT while in a pagination
prompt issued from within fetch_inferior_event (or one of its
callees). E.g. from the test:

The issue is that inferior_event_handler swallows errors and notifies
the observers (the interpreters) about the command error, even if the
interpreter is forced sync while we're handling a nested event loop
(for execute_command). The observers print a prompt, and then when we
get back to the top event loop, we print another (in
start_event_loop).
I see no reason the error should be swallowed here. Just cancel the
execution related bits and let the error propagate to the top level
(start_event_loop), which re-enables stdin and notifies observers.

Enabling target-async by default will require implementing sync
execution on top of an async target, much like foreground command are
implemented on the CLI in async mode.
In order to do that, we will need better control of when to print the
MI prompt. Currently the interp->display_prompt_p hook is all we
have, and MI just always returns false, meaning, make
display_gdb_prompt a no-op. We'll need to be able to know to print
the MI prompt in some of the conditions that display_gdb_prompt is
called from the core, but not all.
This is all a litte twisted currently. As we can see,
display_gdb_prompt is really CLI specific, so make the console
interpreters (console/tui) themselves call it. To be able to do that,
and add a few different observers that the interpreters can use to
distinguish when or why the the prompt is being printed:
#1 - one called whenever a command is cancelled due to an error.
#2 - another for when a foreground command just finished.
In both cases, CLI wants to print the prompt, while MI doesn't.
MI will want to print the prompt in the second case when in a special
MI mode.
The display_gdb_prompt call in interp_set made me pause. The comment
there reads:
/* Finally, put up the new prompt to show that we are indeed here.
Also, display_gdb_prompt for the console does some readline magic
which is needed for the console interpreter, at least... */
But, that looks very much like a no-op to me currently:
- the MI interpreter always return false in the prompt hook, meaning
actually display no prompt.
- the interpreter used at that point is still quiet. And the
console/tui interpreters return false in the prompt hook if they're
quiet, meaning actually display no prompt.
The only remaining possible use would then be the readline magic. But
whatever that might have been, it's not reacheable today either,
because display_gdb_prompt returns early, before touching readline if
the interpreter returns false in the display_prompt_p hook.
Tested on x86_64 Fedora 20, sync and async modes.
