Statically initialise target common sections
This tidies initialisation of target common sections, doing so using a static initialiser rather than via code and deleting unnecessary symbol_ptr_ptr variables (the one in asection is used instead). The patch also initialises ecoff.c:bfd_debug_section using BFD_FAKE_SECTION. That does change bfd_debug_section slightly, output_section was NULL now bfd_debug_section, and symbol_ptr_ptr was NULL now &bfd_debug_section.symbol, but I believe those changes are safe. bfd/ * ecoff.c (bfd_debug_section): Init using BFD_FAKE_SECTION. (ecoff_scom_section, ecoff_scom_symbol): Statically init using BFD_FAKE_SECTION and GLOBAL_SYM_INIT. Delete initialisation code. FIXME for merging of e_flags and .gnu.attributes
Code in the linker, present before the addition of .gnu.attributes support, results in shared libraries not being considered by BFD when merging e_flags and .gnu.attributes from input files to the output. That doesn't seem correct to me, but I don't know enough about all the various ABIs to change the behaviour with any confidence. So this patch merely punts on dynamic objects in merge_private_bfd_data target functions, with a FIXME for maintainer attention. I haven't excluded shared libraries from being considered where the target merge_private_bfd_data (a) already has code dealing with shared libraries, or (b) where that function just sets the output to the most constraining arch/mach combination and other fairly trivial merges, or (c) when the target has no shared library linker support. In (a) are: arc, arm, aarch64, riscv, sparc. In (b) are: bpf, cris, csky, m32r, m68k, mn10300, nios2, tilegx, tilepro, vax, visium, xtensa. bfd_size_type to size_t
bfd_size_type was invented a long time ago in the K&R days. Many places in binutils ought to be using size_t instead (and there are lots of places that use long or unsigned long that really ought to use size_t too). Note that you can't change everything over to size_t: A 32-bit host needs a larger type than size_t to support reading and processing of 64-bit ELF object files. This patch just tidies some of the more obvious uses of bfd_size_type that could be size_t. There no doubt are more lurking in the source. Incidentally, practically all functions used for output of object files can use size_t and don't need to worry about overflow of size expressions. If you have something like symcount * sizeof (void *) when symcount is counting symbols already in memory then you know that this expression can't overflow since the size of a symbol in memory is bfd_section_* macros
This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various bfd section macros and functions. The bfd is hardly ever used and if needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind std_section special sections. Those sections shouldn't be modified anyway. The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros, replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds bfd_set_section_lma. I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling bfd_rename_section. Remove bfd stub function casts.
This patch defines a bunch of new functions to use in the BFD target structs rather than casting bfd_false or bfd_true and similar stub functions. I've also renamed the stub functions to reflect their parameters and put "error" in the name if they set bfd_error. Fix compilation of the BFD sub-directory with a gcc v8 compiler by adding extra casts.
GCC v8 issues warnings about mis-matching casts of function pointers. A previous patch tried to fix this problem by adding new dummy functions which accepted a variable number of arguments. But this introduces serious problems when compiled with other versions of gcc, (notably gcc 4.4). This patch reverts that previous solution and instead adds extra casts (to function types without a parameter list). Rename u.weakdef and make it a circular list
This makes the elf_link_hash_entry weakdef field, currently used to point from a weak symbol to a strong alias, a circular list so that all aliases can be found from any of them. A new flag, is_weakalias, distinguishes the weak symbol from a strong alias, and is used in all places where we currently test u.weakdef != NULL. With the original u.weakdef handling it was possible to have two or more weak symbols pointing via u.weakdef to a strong definition. Obviously that situation can't map to a circular list; One or more of the weak symbols must point at another weak alias rather than the strong definition. To handle that, I've added an accessor function to return the strong definition. * elf-bfd.h (struct elf_link_hash_entry): Add is_weakalias. Rename u.weakdef to u.alias and update comment. Delete duplicate target short-cuts to dynamic sections
We'd like to have the elf_link_hash_table srelplt field rather than some private target field used to save short-cuts to a PLT relocation section. This save a little space but mainly is so that the generic ELF code can access the field. Pass link_info to _bfd_merge_private_bfd_data
Most BFD linker functions take a bfd_link_info param, which reinforces
the fact that they are linker functions and allow access to linker
callbacks, eg. einfo for printing errors. I was going to use einfo
for --fatal-warnings support before I decided a better way was the

Return void from linker callbacks
The ldmain.c implementation of these linker callback functions always return true, so any code handling a false return is dead. What's more, some of the bfd backends abort if ever a false return is seen, and there seems to be some confusion in gdb's compile-object-load.c. The return value was never meant to be "oh yes, a multiple_definition error occurred", but rather "out of memory or other catastrophic failure". This patch removes the status return on the callbacks that always return true. I kept the return status for "notice" because that one does happen to need to return "out of memory". include/ * bfdlink.h (struct bfd_link_callbacks): Update comments. Set dynamic tag VMA and size from dynamic section when possible
Rather than searching the output for a specific named section, it's better, where possible, to use a linker created dynamic section to set a dynamic tag's value. Add output_type to bfd_link_info
The "shared" field in bfd_link_info is set for both DSO and and PIE.
There are separate fields for executable and relocatable outputs. This
patch adds an "output_type" field:

and a "pic" field to bfd_link_info to replace shared, executable and
relocatable fields so that we can use the "output_type" field to check
for output type and the "pic" field check if output is PIC. Macros,

and bfd_link_pie, are provided to check for output features.

Make bfd.link_next field a union
This field of struct bfd is currently only used to chain together linker input files. Unwrap symbols for debug information
Fixes issues with dwz multi-file (-m) and ld's -wrap option. Symbols referenced from DWARF debug info in a separate file, eg. to specify low and high pc, must use the real symbol.
