Extract symbol-writing function from parsers
I noticed that several parsers shared the same code to write a symbol reference to an expression. This patch factors this code out into a new function. gdb: rename type::{arch,objfile} -> type::{arch_owner,objfile_owner}
I think this makes the names of the methods clearer, especially for the arch. The type::arch method (which gets the arch owner, or NULL if the type is not arch owned) is easily confused with the get_type_arch method (which returns an arch no matter what). The name "arch_owner" will make it intuitive that the method returns NULL if the type is not arch-owned. Also, this frees the type::arch name, so we will be able to morph the get_type_arch function into the type::arch method. gdb/ChangeLog: * gdbtypes.h (struct type) <arch>: Rename to... <arch_owner>: ... this, update all users. <objfile>: Rename to... <objfile_owner>: ... this, update all users. Pass void_context_p to parse_expression
An earlier patch pointed out that nothing in GDB sets void_context_p when parsing an expression. This patch fixes this omission. "print" and "call" differ in that the former will print a value that has void type, while the latter will not. AdaCore has had a patch for a long time that uses this distinction to help with overload resolution. In particular, in a "call" context, a procedure will be chosen, while in a "print" context, a zero-argument function will be chosen instead. Change parameters to language_defn::post_parser
In the expression rewrite, Ada type resolution will be done at parse time rather than in a post-parse pass. At this point, language_defn::post_parser will be removed. However, for this to work, the information available to post_parser must be made available during the actual parse. This patch refactors this code slightly to make this possible. Change void_context_p to bool
This patch changes void_context_p to bool, as a prerequisite to the change to post_parser that I submitted here: https://sourceware.org/pipermail/gdb-patches/2020-December/174080.html Tested by rebuilding. Note that nothing in-tree passes true here. I don't know why this is, but there is a use of this internally in AdaCore's tree. I will try to submit that patch, if it is needed. Remove per-language op_name functions
enum exp_opcode is created from all the .def files, but then each language is required to implement its own op_name function to turn an enum value to a string. This seemed over-complicated to me, and this patch removes the per-language functions in favor of simply using the .def names for all languages. Note that op_name is only used for dumping expressions, which is a maintainer/debug feature. gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: fix leading space vs tabs issues
Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example, there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch. So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully). One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit" anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you already need a somewhat efficient way to do this. Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke. It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it). Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't really make archeology more difficult. The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy). gdb/ChangeLog: * aarch64-linux-tdep.c: Fix gdb: move f_language class into a header file
Moves the f_language class from f-lang.c into f-lang.h. The benefit of this is that functions declared in other f-*.c files can become member functions without having to go through a level of indirection. Some additional support functions have now become private member functions of the f_language class, these are mostly functions that then called some other function that was itself a member of the language_defn class hierarchy. gdb/fortran: add support for parsing array strides in expressions
With this commit GDB now understands the syntax of Fortran array strides, a user can type an expression including an array stride, but they will only get an error informing them that array strides are not supported. This alone is an improvement on what we had before in GDB, better to give the user a helpful message that a particular feature is not supported than to just claim a syntax error. Before: (gdb) p array (1:10:2, 2:10:2) A syntax error in expression, near `:2, 2:10:2)'. gdb: Convert enum range_type to a bit field enum
The expression range_type enum represents the following ideas: - Lower bound is set to default, - Upper bound is set to default, - Upper bound is exclusive. There are currently 6 entries in the enum to represent the combination of all those ideas. In a future commit I'd like to add stride information to the range, this could in theory appear with any of the existing enum entries, so this would take us to 12 enum entries. This feels like its getting a little out of hand, so in this commit I switch the range_type enum over to being a flags style enum. There's one entry to represent no flags being set, then 3 flags to represent the 3 ideas above. Adding stride information will require adding only one more enum flag. I've then gone through and updated the code to handle this change. Rename common to gdbsupport
This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the top level. This patch just renames the "common" directory. The idea is to do this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then move the directory to the top. This approach makes the patches a bit more tractable. I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory. However, as this patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too much difficulty. Make copy_name return std::string

Replace throw_exception with throw in some cases
This replaces throw_exception with "throw;" when possible. This was written by script. The rule that is followed is that uses of the form: catch (... &name) { ... throw_exception (name); } ... can be rewritten. Rename gdb exception types
This renames the gdb exception types. The old types were only needed due to the macros in common-exception.h that are now gone. Remove paren_depth global
This removes the "paren_depth" global. In most cases, it is made into a static global in a given parser. I consider this a slight improvement, because it makes it clear that the variable isn't used for communication between different modules of gdb. Remove parser_state "initial_size" parameter
All the real (not test) uses of parser_state pass 10 as the "initial_size" parameter, and it seems to me that there's no real reason to require callers to set this. More block constification
I noticed that there are still many places referring to non-const blocks. This constifies all the remaining ones that I found that could be constified. In a few spots, this search found unused variables or fields. I removed these. Have parser reset the innermost block tracker
I ran across a comment in symfile.c today: /* Clear globals which might have pointed into a removed objfile. FIXME: It's not clear which of these are supposed to persist between expressions and which ought to be reset each time. */ It seems to me that this can be clarified: the parser entry points ought to reset the innermost block tracker (and the expression context block), and these should not be considered valid for code to use at arbitrary times -- only immediately after an expression has been parsed. This patch implements this idea. This could be further improved by removing the parser globals and changing the parser functions to return this information, but I have not done this. gdb/fortran: Add Fortran 'kind' intrinsic and keyword
The 'kind' keyword has two uses in Fortran, it is the name of a builtin intrinsic function, and it is also a keyword used to create a type of a specific kind. This commit adds support for using kind as an intrinsic function, and also adds some initial support for using kind to create types of a specific kind. This commit only allows the creation of the type 'character(kind=1)', however, it will be easy enough to extend this in future to support more type kinds. The kind of any expression can be queried using the kind intrinsic function. At the moment the kind returned corresponds to the size of the type, this matches how gfortran handles kinds. However, the correspondence between kind and type size depends on the compiler and/or the specific target, so this might not be correct for everyone. If we want to support different compilers/targets in future the code to compute the kind from a type will need to be updated. gdb/ChangeLog: * expprint.c (dump_subexp_body_standard): Support UNOP_KIND. * f-exp.y: Define 'KIND' token. Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py script. Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid copyright header (gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc). As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header was sent to gcc-patches first. gdb/ChangeLog: Update copyright year range in all GDB files. |

Simple -Wshadow=local fixes
This fixes all the straightforward -Wshadow=local warnings in gdb. A few standard approaches are used here: * Renaming an inner (or outer, but more commonly inner) variable; * Lowering a declaration to avoid a clash; * Moving a declaration into a more inner scope to avoid a clash, including the special case of moving a declaration into a loop header. Avoid undefined behavior in ada_operator_length
-fsanitize=undefined pointed out this error: runtime error: load of value 2887952, which is not a valid value for type 'exp_opcode' This happens in gdb.ada/complete.exp when processing "complete p my_glob". This does not parse, so the Ada parser throws an exception; but then the code in parse_exp_in_context_1 accepts the expression anyway. However, as no elements have been written to the expression, undefined behavior results. The fix is to notice this case in parse_exp_in_context_1.
