gdb: remove gdbcmd.h
Most files including gdbcmd.h currently rely on it to access things actually declared in cli/cli-cmds.h (setlist, showlist, etc). To make things easy, replace all includes of gdbcmd.h with includes of cli/cli-cmds.h. This might lead to some unused includes of cli/cli-cmds.h, but it's harmless, and much faster than going through the 170 or so files by hand. gdb/record: add an assert in cmd_record_start
The 'record' command is both a prefix command AND an alias for 'target record-full'. As it is a prefix command, if a user types: (gdb) record blah Then GDB will look for, and try to invoke the 'blah' sub-command. This will either succeed (if blah is found) or throw an error (if blah is not found). As such, the only way to invoke the 'record' command is like: (gdb) record It is impossible to pass arguments to the 'record' command. As we know this is true then we can assert this in cmd_record_start. I added this assert because initially I was going to try forwarding ARGS from cmd_record_start to the 'target record-full' command, but then I realised passing arguments to 'record' was impossible. gdb/record: remove unnecessary use of filename_completer
Spotted that the 'record' command has its completer set to filename_completer. The problem is that 'record' is a prefix command, as such, its completer is hard-coded to complete on sub-commands. The attempt to use filename_completer is irrelevant. The 'record' command is itself a command though, that is, a user can do this: (gdb) record which is really just an alias for: (gdb) target record-full Nowhere does cmd_record_start (which is called when 'record' is used) expect a filename, and 'target record-full' doesn't expect a filename either. gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: remove includes of early headers
Now that defs.h, server.h and common-defs.h are included via the `-include` option, it is no longer necessary for source files to include them. Remove all the inclusions of these files I could find. Update copyright year range in header of all files managed by GDB
This commit is the result of the following actions:
- Running gdb/copyright.py to update all of the copyright headers to
include 2024,
- Manually updating a few files the copyright.py script told me to
update, these files had copyright headers embedded within the
file,
- Regenerating gdbsupport/Makefile.in to refresh it's copyright
date,
- Using grep to find other files that still mentioned 2023. If
these files were updated last year from 2022 to 2023 then I've
updated them this year to 2024.
I'm sure I've probably missed some dates. Feel free to fix them up as
you spot them.

gdb: disassembler opcode display formatting
This commit changes the format of 'disassemble /r' to match GNU
objdump. Specifically, GDB will now display the instruction bytes in
as 'objdump --wide --disassemble' does.
Here is an example for RISC-V before this patch:

There are two differences here. First, the instruction bytes after
the patch are grouped based on the size of the instruction, and are
byte-swapped to little-endian order.
Second, after the patch, GDB now uses the bytes-per-line hint from
libopcodes to add whitespace padding after the opcode bytes, this
means that in most cases the instructions are nicely aligned.
It is still possible for a very long instruction to intrude into the
disassembled text space. The next example is x86-64, before the
patch:

Most instructions are aligned, except for the very long instruction.
Notice too that for x86-64 libopcodes doesn't request that GDB group
the instruction bytes. This matches the behaviour of objdump.
In case the user really wants the old behaviour, I have added a new
modifier 'disassemble /b', this displays the instruction byte at a
time. For x86-64, which never groups instruction bytes, /b and /r are
equivalent, but for RISC-V, using /b gets the old layout back (except
that the whitespace for alignment is still present). Consider our
original RISC-V example, this time using /b:

Obviously, this patch is a potentially significant change to the
behaviour or /r. I could have added /b with the new behaviour and
left /r alone. However, personally, I feel the new behaviour is
significantly better than the old, hence, I made /r be what I consider
the "better" behaviour.
The reason I prefer the new behaviour is that, when I use /r, I almost
always want to manually decode the instruction for some reason, and
having the bytes displayed in "instruction order" rather than memory
order, just makes this easier.
The 'record instruction-history' command also takes a /r modifier, and
has been modified in the same way as disassemble; /r gets the new
behaviour, and /b has been added to retain the old behaviour.
Finally, the MI command -data-disassemble, is unchanged in behaviour,
this command now requests the raw bytes of the instruction, which is
equivalent to the /b modifier. This means that the MI output will
remain backward compatible.

Use filtered output in ordinary commands
Many otherwise ordinary commands choose to use unfiltered output rather than filtered. I don't think there's any reason for this, so this changes many such commands to use filtered output instead. Note that complete_command is not touched due to a comment there explaining why unfiltered output is believed to be used. |

gdb: make add_com_alias accept target as a cmd_list_element
The alias creation functions currently accept a name to specify the target command. They pass this to add_alias_cmd, which needs to lookup the target command by name. Given that: - We don't support creating an alias for a command before that command exists. - We always use add_info_alias just after creating that target command, and therefore have access to the target command's cmd_list_element. ... change add_com_alias to accept the target command as a cmd_list_element (other functions are done in subsequent patches). This ensures we don't create the alias before the target command, because you need to get the cmd_list_element from somewhere when you call the alias creation function. And it avoids an unecessary command lookup. So it seems better to me in every aspect. gdb/ChangeLog: * command.h (add_com_alias): Accept target as cmd_list_element. Update callers. gdb: generate the prefix name for prefix commands on demand
Previously, the prefixname field of struct cmd_list_element was manually
set for prefix commands. This seems verbose and error prone as it
required every single call to functions adding prefix commands to
specify the prefix name while the same information can be easily
generated.
Historically, this was not possible as the prefix field was null for
many commands, but this was fixed in commit

gdb: remove unpush_target free function
unpush_target unpushes the passed-in target from the current inferior's target stack. Calling it is therefore an implicit dependency on the current global inferior. Remove that function and make the callers use the inferior::unpush_target method directly. This sometimes allows using the inferior from the context rather than the global current inferior. target_unpusher::operator() now needs to be implemented in target.c, otherwise target.h and inferior.h both need to include each other, and that wouldn't work. gdb/ChangeLog: * target.h (unpush_target): Remove, update all callers to use `inferior::unpush_target` instead. gdb, record: rephrase the 'not recording' error message
When trying to use one of the record commands without having enabled
recording first, GDB gives the error message:
(gdb) record function-call-history
No record target is currently active.
Use one of the "target record-<TAB><TAB>" commands first.
In the record help, however, we say:
(gdb) help record
record, rec
Start recording.
List of record subcommands:
record btrace, record b -- Start branch trace recording.
record delete, record del, record d -- Delete the rest of execution log and start recording it anew.
record full -- Start full execution recording.
record function-call-history -- Prints the execution history at function granularity.

gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: fix leading space vs tabs issues
Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example, there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch. So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully). One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit" anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you already need a somewhat efficient way to do this. Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke. It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it). Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't really make archeology more difficult. The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy). gdb/ChangeLog: * aarch64-linux-tdep.c: Fix Replace most calls to help_list and cmd_show_list
Currently there are many prefix commands that do nothing but call either help_list or cmd_show_list. I happened to notice that one such call, for "set print type", used the wrong command list parameter, causing incorrect output. Rather than fix this bug in isolation, I decided to eliminate this possibility by adding two new ways to add prefix commands, which simply route the call to help_list or cmd_show_list, as appropriate. This makes it impossible for a mismatch to occur. In some cases, a bit of output was removed; however, I don't think this output in general was very useful. It seemed redundant with what's already printed by help_list. A representative example is this hunk, removed from ada-lang.c: - printf_unfiltered (_(\ -"\"set ada\" must be followed by the name of a setting.\n")); This simplified the CLI style set/show commands quite a bit, and allowed the deletion of a macro. This also cleans up some unusual code in windows-tdep.c. Tested on x86-64 Fedora 30. Make first and last lines of 'command help documentation' consistent.
With this patch, the help docs now respect 2 invariants: * The first line of a command help is terminated by a '.' character. * The last character of a command help is not a newline character. Note that the changes for the last invariant were done by Tom, as part of : [PATCH] Remove trailing newlines from help text https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2019-06/msg00050.html but some occurrences have been re-introduced since then. Some help docs had to be rephrased/restructured to respect the above invariants. Before this patch, print_doc_line was printing the first line of a command help documentation, but stopping at the first '.' or ',' character. This was giving inconsistent results : * The first line of command helps was sometimes '.' terminated, sometimes not. * The first line of command helps was not always designed to be readable/understandable/unambiguous when stopping at the first '.' or ',' character. This e.g. created the following inconsistencies/problems: < catch exception -- Catch Ada exceptions < catch handlers -- Catch Ada exceptions < catch syscall -- Catch system calls by their names < down-silently -- Same as the `down' command while the new help is: > catch exception -- Catch Ada exceptions, when raised. > catch handlers -- Catch Ada exceptions, when handled. > catch syscall -- Catch system calls by their names, groups and/or numbers. > down-silently -- Same as the `down' command, but does not print anything. Also, the command help doc should not be terminated by a newline character, but this was not respected by all commands. The cli-option -OPT framework re-introduced some occurences. So, the -OPT build help framework was changed to not output newlines at the end of %OPTIONS% replacement. This patch changes the help documentations to ensure the 2 invariants given above. It implied to slightly rephrase or restructure some help docs. Based on the above invariants, print_doc_line (called by 'apropos' and 'help' commands to print the first line of a command help) now outputs the full first line of a command help. This all results in a lot of small changes in the produced help docs. Rename common to gdbsupport
This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the top level. This patch just renames the "common" directory. The idea is to do this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then move the directory to the top. This approach makes the patches a bit more tractable. I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory. However, as this patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too much difficulty. Have 'thread|frame apply' style their output.
'thread|frame apply CMD' launches CMD so that CMD output goes to a string_file. This patch ensures that string_file for such CMD output contains style escape sequences that 'thread|frame apply' will later on output on the real terminal, so as to have CMD output properly styled. The idea is to have the class ui_file having overridable methods to indicate that the output to this ui_file should be done using 'terminal' behaviour such as styling. Then these methods are overriden in string_file so that a specially constructed string_file will get output with style escape sequences. After this patch, the output of CMD by thread|frame apply CMD is styled similarly as when CMD is launched directly. Note that string_file (term_out true) could also support wrapping, but this is not done (yet?). Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py script. Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid copyright header (gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc). As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header was sent to gcc-patches first. gdb/ChangeLog: Update copyright year range in all GDB files. |

Convert struct target_ops to C++
I.e., use C++ virtual methods and inheritance instead of tables of
function pointers.
Unfortunately, there's no way to do a smooth transition. ALL native
targets in the tree must be converted at the same time. I've tested
all I could with cross compilers and with help from GCC compile farm,
but naturally I haven't been able to test many of the ports. Still, I
made a best effort to port everything over, and while I expect some
build problems due to typos and such, which should be trivial to fix,
I don't expect any design problems.
* Implementation notes:
- The flattened current_target is gone. References to current_target
or current_target.beneath are replaced with references to
target_stack (the top of the stack) directly.
- To keep "set debug target" working, this adds a new debug_stratum
layer that sits on top of the stack, prints the debug, and delegates
to the target beneath.
In addition, this makes the shortname and longname properties of
target_ops be virtual methods instead of data fields, and makes the
debug target defer those to the target beneath. This is so that
debug code sprinkled around that does "if (debugtarget) ..." can
transparently print the name of the target beneath.
A patch later in the series actually splits out the
shortname/longname methods to a separate structure, but I preferred
to keep that chance separate as it is associated with changing a bit
the design of how targets are registered and open.
- Since you can't check whether a C++ virtual method is overridden,
the old method of checking whether a target_ops implements a method
by comparing the function pointer must be replaced with something
else.
Some cases are fixed by adding a parallel "can_do_foo" target_ops
methods. E.g.,:

Others are fixed by changing void return type to bool or int return
type, and have the default implementation return false or -1, to
indicate lack of support.
- make-target-delegates was adjusted to generate C++ classes and
methods.
It needed tweaks to grok "virtual" in front of the target method
name, and for the fact that methods are no longer function pointers.
(In particular, the current code parsing the return type was simple
because it could simply parse up until the '(' in '(*to_foo)'.
It now generates a couple C++ classes that inherit target_ops:
dummy_target and debug_target.
Since we need to generate the class declarations as well, i.e., we
need to emit methods twice, we now generate the code in two passes.
- The core_target global is renamed to avoid conflict with the
"core_target" class.
- ctf/tfile targets
init_tracefile_ops is replaced by a base class that is inherited by
both ctf and tfile.
- bsd-uthread
The bsd_uthread_ops_hack hack is gone. It's not needed because
nothing was extending a target created by bsd_uthread_target.
- remote/extended-remote targets
This is a first pass, just enough to C++ify target_ops.
A later pass will convert more free functions to methods, and make
remote_state be truly per remote instance, allowing multiple
simultaneous instances of remote targets.
- inf-child/"native" is converted to an actual base class
(inf_child_target), that is inherited by all native targets.
- GNU/Linux
The old weird double-target linux_ops mechanism in linux-nat.c, is
gone, replaced by adding a few virtual methods to linux-nat.h's
target_ops, called low_XXX, that the concrete linux-nat
implementations override. Sort of like gdbserver's
linux_target_ops, but simpler, for requiring only one
target_ops-like hierarchy, which spares implementing the same method
twice when we need to forward the method to a low implementation.
The low target simply reimplements the target_ops method directly in
that case.
There are a few remaining linux-nat.c hooks that would be better
converted to low_ methods like above too. E.g.:
linux_nat_set_new_thread (t, x86_linux_new_thread);
linux_nat_set_new_fork (t, x86_linux_new_fork);
linux_nat_set_forget_process
That'll be done in a follow up patch.
- We can no longer use functions like x86_use_watchpoints to install
custom methods on an arbitrary base target.
The patch replaces instances of such a pattern with template mixins.
For example memory_breakpoint_target defined in target.h, or
x86_nat_target in x86-nat.h.
- linux_trad_target, MIPS and Alpha GNU/Linux
The code in the new linux-nat-trad.h/c files which was split off of
inf-ptrace.h/c recently, is converted to a C++ base class, and used
by the MIPS and Alpha GNU/Linux ports.
- BSD targets
The
$architecture x NetBSD/OpenBSD/FreeBSD
support matrix complicates things a bit. There's common BSD target
code, and there's common architecture-specific code shared between
the different BSDs. Currently, all that is stiched together to form
a final target, via the i386bsd_target, x86bsd_target,
fbsd_nat_add_target functions etc.
This introduces new fbsd_nat_target, obsd_nat_target and
nbsd_nat_target classes that serve as base/prototype target for the
corresponding BSD variant.
And introduces generic i386/AMD64 BSD targets, to be used as
template mixin to build a final target. Similarly, a generic SPARC
target is added, used by both BSD and Linux ports.
- bsd_kvm_add_target, BSD libkvm target
I considered making bsd_kvm_supply_pcb a virtual method, and then
have each port inherit bsd_kvm_target and override that method, but
that was resulting in lots of unjustified churn, so I left the
function pointer mechanism alone.

Convert observers to C++
This converts observers from using a special source-generating script to be plain C++. This version of the patch takes advantage of C++11 by using std::function and variadic templates; incorporates Pedro's patches; and renames the header file to "observable.h" (this change eliminates the need for a clean rebuild). Note that Pedro's patches used a template lambda in tui-hooks.c, but this failed to compile on some buildbot instances (presumably due to differing C++ versions); I replaced this with an ordinary template function. Pass inferior down to target_detach and to_detach
The to_detach target_ops method implementations are currently expected to work on current_inferior/inferior_ptid. In order to make things more explicit, and remove some "shadow" parameter passing through globals, this patch adds an "inferior" parameter to to_detach. Implementations will be expected to use this instead of relying on the global. However, to keep things simple, this patch only does the minimum that is necessary to add the parameter. The following patch gives an example of how one such implementation would be adapted. If the approach is deemed good, we can then look into adapting more implementations. Remove args from target detach
I was looking into adding a parameter to target_detach, and was
wondering what the args parameter was. It seems like in the distant
past, it was possible to specify a signal number when detaching. That
signal was injected in the process before it was detached. There is an
example of code handling this in linux_nat_detach. With today's GDB, I
can't get this to work. Doing "detach 15" (15 == SIGTERM) doesn't work,
because detach is a prefix command and doesn't recognize the sub-command
15. Doing "detach inferiors 15" doesn't work because it expects a list
of inferior id to detach. Therefore, I don't think there's a way of
invoking detach_command with a non-NULL args. I also didn't find any
documentation related to this feature.
I assume that this feature stopped working when detach was made a prefix
command, which is in

Constify add_prefix_cmd
This changes add_prefix_cmd to accept a const-taking function as an argument; then fixes up all the callers. In a couple of spots I had to add a non-const overload of a function, because the function is passed to two different command-adding "constructors". These overloads are temporary; once constification is complete they can be removed. This patch also fixes a typo I happened to notice while constifying. Note that this touches a couple of files (gnu-nat.c and go32-nat.c) that I can't build. So, while I made a best-effort there, I am not certain they will still compile. Rename _const functions to use overloading instead
This renames a few functions -- skip_spaces_const, skip_to_space_const, get_number_const, extract_arg_const -- to drop the "_const" suffix and instead rely on overloading. This makes future const fixes simpler by reducing the number of lines that must be changed. I think it is also not any less clear, as all these functions have the same interface as their non-const versions by design. Furthermore there's an example of using an overload in-tree already, namely check_for_argument. This patch was largely created using some perl one-liners; then a few fixes were applied by hand. Introduce gdb_disassembly_flags
For some reason I ended up staring at some of the "int flags" in btrace-related code, and I got confused because I had no clue what the flags where supposed to indicate.
