Make exception handling more efficient
This makes exception handling more efficient in a few spots, through the use of const- and rvalue-references. Rename gdb exception types
This renames the gdb exception types. The old types were only needed due to the macros in common-exception.h that are now gone. Disable styling when running in batch mode
The GCC Guality testsuite within GCC compiles C/C++ files in GCC at various optimization levels then debugs them in GDB, checking that program values can be read. This is done within the dejagnu framework. The new style options in GDB have broken many of the tests due to the testsuite being unable to process the new control characters. The fix in Guality is to either to improve the string matching or to disable styling on the cli or init file (after checking gdb is recent enough to support styling). This fix will also need making an any other testsuites in the wild that use GDB. An alternative would be to automatically disable styling when using GDB in batch mode. The reasoning here is that batch mode is only used when automating GDB and any output will be processed later either with text processing tools or viewed in text editors, many of these will not correctly handle the control characters by default. This ensures GDB continues to work as expected. Anyone who explicitly wants styling in batch mode can enable it either in the init file or adding to the batch file - but that would not be the standard use case. Patch simply disables style after reading the batch command flag, before reading in the init file or batch file. gdb/ChangeLog: * main.c (captured_main_1): Disable styling in batch mode. |

Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py script. Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid copyright header (gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc). As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header was sent to gcc-patches first. gdb/ChangeLog: Update copyright year range in all GDB files. |

Check return value of bfd_init
Alan recently added a way for BFD library users to check whether they were in fact loading a compatible version of BFD: https://sourceware.org/ml/binutils/2018-10/msg00198.html It seemed reasonable to me that gdb should do this check as well, in case someone is dynamically linking against BFD. Simon pointed out that an earlier version of the patch would cause a gdb crash if the test failed. Simple -Wshadow=local fixes
This fixes all the straightforward -Wshadow=local warnings in gdb. From what I read, brk/sbrk on macOS is just an emulation, it always returns a pointer in a 4MB section reserved for that. So instead of letting users use "maint set per-command space on" and print silly results, I think we should just disable that feature for this platform (as we do for platforms that don't have sbrk). Create new common/pathstuff.[ch]
This commit moves the path manipulation routines found on utils.c to a new common/pathstuff.c, and updates the Makefile.in's accordingly. The routines moved are "gdb_realpath", "gdb_realpath_keepfile" and "gdb_abspath". This will be needed because gdbserver will have to call "gdb_abspath" on my next patch, which implements a way to expand the path of the inferior provided by the user in order to allow specifying just the binary name when starting gdbserver, like: $ gdbserver :1234 a.out With the recent addition of the startup-with-shell feature on gdbserver, this scenario doesn't work anymore if the user doesn't have the current directory listed in the PATH variable. I had to do a minor adjustment on "gdb_abspath" because we don't have access to "tilde_expand" on gdbserver, so now the function is using "gdb_tilde_expand" instead. Otherwise, the code is the same. Add support for the readnever concept
The purpose of this concept is to turn the load of debugging information off, either globally (via the '--readnever' option), or objfile-specific. The implementation proposed here is an extension of the patch distributed with Fedora GDB; looking at the Fedora patch itself and the history, one can see some reasons why it was never resubmitted: - The patch appears to have been introduced as a workaround, at least initially; - The patch is far from perfect, as it simply shunts the load of DWARF debugging information, without really worrying about the other debug format. - Who really does non-symbolic debugging anyways? One use of this feature is when a user simply wants to do the following sequence: attach, dump core, detach. Loading the debugging information in this case is an unnecessary cause of delay. This patch expands the version shipped with Fedora GDB in order to make the feature available for all the debuginfo backends, not only for DWARF. It also implements a per-objfile flag which can be activated by using the "-readnever" command when using the 'add-symbol-file' or 'symbol-file' commands. It's also worth mentioning that this patch tests whether GDB correctly fails to initialize if both '--readnow' and '--readnever' options are passed. Eliminate catch_errors
If you want to use catch_errors with a function with parameters, then currently you have to manually write a "capture" struct wrapping the arguments and marshall/unmarshall that. https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2017-09/msg00834.html proposed adjusting catch_errors to use gdb::function_view, which would allow passing lambdas with automatic captures. However, it seems like using TRY/CATCH directly instead ends up producing clearer and easier to debug code. This is what this commit does. Note that removing catch_errors exposes further cleanup opportunities around no longer having to follow catch_errors callback type, and also removes a few cleanups. I didn't do anything to save/restore current_uiout because I think that should be the responsibility of the code that changes current_uiout in the first place. (Another approach could be to make catch_errors a variadic template like: template<typename Function, typename... Get rid of "gdb_dirbuf" and use "getcwd (NULL, 0)"
Currently we have "current_directory" and "gdb_dirbuf" globals, which means that we basically have two possible places to consult when we want to know GDB's current working directory. This is not ideal and can lead to confusion. Moreover, the way we're using "gdb_difbuf" along with "getcwd" is problematic because we declare the buffer with "1024" elements hardcoded, which does not take into account longer pathnames that are possible in many filesystems. Using "PATH_MAX" would also not be a solution because of portability problems. Therefore, the best solution is to rely on the fact that "getcwd (NULL, 0)" will "do the right thing" and return a heap-allocated string containing the full path. With the new "getcwd" module from gnulib, it is now possible to do that without worrying about breaking some host. With this patch "current_directory" is now the only place to check for GDB's cwd. Eliminate make_cleanup_ui_file_delete / make ui_file a class hierarchy
This patch starts from the desire to eliminate make_cleanup_ui_file_delete, but then goes beyond. It makes ui_file & friends a real C++ class hierarchy, and switches temporary ui_file-like objects to stack-based allocation. - mem_fileopen -> string_file mem_fileopen is replaced with a new string_file class that is treated as a value class created on the stack. This alone eliminates most make_cleanup_ui_file_delete calls, and, simplifies code a whole lot (diffstat shows around 1k loc dropped.) string_file's internal buffer is a std::string, thus the "string" in the name. This simplifies the implementation much, compared to mem_fileopen, which managed growing its internal buffer manually. - ui_file_as_string, ui_file_strdup, ui_file_obsavestring all gone The new string_file class has a string() method that provides direct writable access to the internal std::string buffer. This replaced ui_file_as_string, which forced a copy of the same data the stream had inside. With direct access via a writable reference, we can instead move the string out of the string_stream, avoiding deep string copying. Related, ui_file_xstrdup calls are replaced with xstrdup'ping the stream's string, and ui_file_obsavestring is replaced by obstack_copy0. With all those out of the way, getting rid of the weird ui_file_put mechanism was possible. - New ui_file::printf, ui_file::puts, etc. methods These simplify / clarify client code. However, the problem is deeper than that: follow_exec simply isn't prepared for the case where sysroot translation fails to locate the new executable. Actually all callers of exec_file_find have bugs due to confusion between host and target pathnames. This commit attempts to fix all that. In terms of the testcases that were formerly segv'ing, GDB now prints a warning but continues execution of the new program, so that the tests now mostly FAIL instead. You could argue the FAILs are due to a legitimate problem with the test environment setting up the sysroot translation incorrectly. A new representative test is added which exercises the ne wwarning code path even with native testing. gdb: Fix build breakage with GCC 4.1 and --disable-nls
Ref: https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2016-09/msg00203.html The std::{min,max} patch caused build failures when configuring GDB with with --disable-nls and using GCC 4.1. The reason is this bit in common/gdb_locale.h: #ifdef ENABLE_NLS ... #else # define gettext(Msgid) (Msgid) ... #endif This causes problems if the <libintl.h> header is first included at any point after "gdb_locale.h". Specifically, the gettext&co declarations in libintl.h: extern char *gettext (__const char *__msgid) __THROW __attribute_format_arg__ (1); end up broken after preprocessing: extern char *(__const char *__msgid) throw () __attribute__ ((__format_arg__ (1))); After the std::min/std::max change to include <algorithm>, this now happens with at least the GCC 4.1 copy of <algorithm>, which includes <libintl.h> via <bits/stl_algobase.h>, <iosfwd>, and <bits/c++locale.h>. Fix PR gdb/18653: gdb disturbs inferior's inherited signal dispositions
gdb's (or gdbserver's) own signal handling should not interfere with the signal dispositions their spawned children inherit. However, it currently does. For example, some paths in gdb cause SIGPIPE to be set to SIG_IGN, and as consequence, the child starts with SIGPIPE to set to SIG_IGN too, even though gdb was started with SIGPIPE set to SIG_DFL. This is because the exec family of functions does not reset the signal disposition of signals that are set to SIG_IGN: http://pubs.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/7908799/xsh/execve.html Signals set to the default action (SIG_DFL) in the calling process image are set to the default action in the new process image. Signals set to be ignored (SIG_IGN) by the calling process image are set to be ignored by the new process image. Signals set to be caught by the calling process image are set to the default action in the new process image (see <signal.h>). And neither does it reset signal masks or flags. Add new command to create extra console/mi UIs
With all the previous plumbing in place, it's now easy to add a command that actually creates a new console/mi UI. The intended use case is to make it possible and easy for MI frontends to provide a fully featured GDB console to users, with readline support, command line editing, history, etc., just like if gdb was started on the command line. Currently MI frontends have to try to implement all of that theirselves and make use of "-interpreter-exec console ...", which is far from perfect. If you ever tried Eclipse's gdb console window, you'll know what I mean... Instead of trying to multiplex console through MI, this command let's just leverage all the built in readline/editing support already inside gdb. The plan is for the MI frontend to start GDB in regular console mode, running inside a terminal emulator widget embedded in Eclipse (which already exists, for supporting the shell widget; other frontends have similar widgets), and then tell GDB to run a full MI interpreter on an specified input/output device, independent of the console. My original prototype planned to do things the other way around -- start GDB in MI mode, and then start an extra CLI console on separate tty. I handed over that prototype to Marc Khouzam @ Eclipse CDT, and after experimentation and discussion, we ended up concluding that starting GDB in CLI mode instead was both easier and actually also supported an interesting use case -- connect an Eclipse frontend to a GDB that is already running outside Eclipse. The current usage is "new-ui <interpreter> <tty>". E.g., on a terminal run this scriplet: $ cat gdb-client #!/bin/bash reset tty tail -f /dev/null $ gdb-client /dev/pts/15 Now run gdb on another terminal, and tell it to start a MI interpreter on the tty of the other terminal: ... Make stdin be per UI
This commit makes each UI have its own "stdin" stream pointer. This is used to determine whether the "from_tty" argument to execute_command, etc. should be true. Related, this commit makes input_from_terminal_p take an UI parameter, and then avoids the gdb_has_a_terminal in it. gdb_has_a_terminal only returns info on gdb's own main/primary terminal (the real stdin). However, the places that call input_from_terminal_p really want to know is whether the command came from an interactive tty. This patch thus renames input_from_terminal_p to input_interactive_p for clarity, and then makes input_interactive_p check for "set interactive" itself, along with ISATTY, instead of calling gdb_has_a_terminal. Actually, quit_force wants to call input_interactive_p _after_ stdin is closed, we can't call ISATTY that late. Make main_ui be heap allocated
This is preparation for being able to create more than one UI object. The change to gdb_main to stop using catch_errors is necessary because catch_errors references current_uiout, which expands to current_ui->m_current_ui, which would crash because current_ui is not initialized yet at that point. Replace the sync_execution global with a new enum prompt_state tristate
When sync_execution (a boolean) is true, it means we're running a foreground command -- we hide the prompt stop listening to input, give the inferior the terminal, then go to the event loop waiting for the target to stop. With multiple independent UIs, we need to track whether each UI is synchronously blocked waiting for the target. IOW, if you do "continue" in one console, that console stops accepting commands, but you should still be free to type other commands in the others consoles. Just simply making sync_execution be per-UI alone not sufficient, because of this in fetch_inferior_event: /* If the inferior was in sync execution mode, and now isn't, restore the prompt (a synchronous execution command has finished, and we're ready for input). */ if (current_ui->async && was_sync && !sync_execution) observer_notify_sync_execution_done (); We'd have to record at entry the "was_sync" state for each UI, not just of the current UI. Simplify starting the command event loop
All interpreter types (CLI/TUI/MI) print the prompt, and then call start_event_loop. Because we'll need an interpreter hook to display the interpreter-specific prompt before going back to the event loop, without actually starting an event loop, this patch moves the start_event_loop call to common code, and replaces the command_loop hook with a pre_command_look hook, that now just prints the prompt. Introduce interpreter factories
If every UI instance has its own set of interpreters, then the current scheme of creating the interpreters at GDB initialization time no longer works. We need to create them whenever a new UI instance is created.
