Eliminate make_cleanup_ui_file_delete / make ui_file a class hierarchy
This patch starts from the desire to eliminate make_cleanup_ui_file_delete, but then goes beyond. It makes ui_file & friends a real C++ class hierarchy, and switches temporary ui_file-like objects to stack-based allocation. - mem_fileopen -> string_file mem_fileopen is replaced with a new string_file class that is treated as a value class created on the stack. This alone eliminates most make_cleanup_ui_file_delete calls, and, simplifies code a whole lot (diffstat shows around 1k loc dropped.) string_file's internal buffer is a std::string, thus the "string" in the name. This simplifies the implementation much, compared to mem_fileopen, which managed growing its internal buffer manually. - ui_file_as_string, ui_file_strdup, ui_file_obsavestring all gone The new string_file class has a string() method that provides direct writable access to the internal std::string buffer. This replaced ui_file_as_string, which forced a copy of the same data the stream had inside. With direct access via a writable reference, we can instead move the string out of the string_stream, avoiding deep string copying. Related, ui_file_xstrdup calls are replaced with xstrdup'ping the stream's string, and ui_file_obsavestring is replaced by obstack_copy0. With all those out of the way, getting rid of the weird ui_file_put mechanism was possible. - New ui_file::printf, ui_file::puts, etc. methods These simplify / clarify client code. I considered splitting client-code changes, like these, e.g.: - stb = mem_fileopen (); - fprintf_unfiltered (stb, "%s%s%s", - _("The valid values are:\n"), - regdesc, - _("The default is \"std\".")); + string_file stb; + stb.printf ("%s%s%s", + _("The valid values are:\n"), + regdesc, + _("The default is \"std\".")); In two steps, with the first step leaving fprintf_unfiltered (etc.) calls in place, and only afterwards do a pass to change all those to call stb.printf etc.. I didn't do that split, because (when I tried), it turned out to be pointless make-work: the first pass would have to touch the fprintf_unfiltered line anyway, to replace "stb" with "&stb". - gdb_fopen replaced with stack-based objects This avoids the need for cleanups or unique_ptr's. I.e., this: struct ui_file *file = gdb_fopen (filename, "w"); if (filename == NULL) perror_with_name (filename); cleanups = make_cleanup_ui_file_delete (file); // use file. do_cleanups (cleanups); is replaced with this: stdio_file file; if (!file.open (filename, "w")) perror_with_name (filename); // use file. - odd contorsions in null_file_write / null_file_fputs around when to call to_fputs / to_write eliminated. - Global null_stream object A few places that were allocating a ui_file in order to print to "nowhere" are adjusted to instead refer to a new 'null_stream' global stream. - TUI's tui_sfileopen eliminated. TUI's ui_file much simplified The TUI's ui_file was serving a dual purpose. It supported being used as string buffer, and supported being backed by a stdio FILE. The string buffer part is gone, replaced by using of string_file. The 'FILE *' support is now much simplified, by making the TUI's ui_file inherit from stdio_file. gdb/ChangeLog: 2017-02-02 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * ada-lang.c (type_as_string): Use string_file. * ada-valprint.c (ada_print_floating): Use string_file. * ada-varobj.c (ada_varobj_scalar_image) (ada_varobj_get_value_image): Use string_file. * aix-thread.c (aix_thread_extra_thread_info): Use string_file. * arm-tdep.c (_initialize_arm_tdep): Use string_printf. * breakpoint.c (update_inserted_breakpoint_locations) (insert_breakpoint_locations, reattach_breakpoints) (print_breakpoint_location, print_one_detail_ranged_breakpoint) (print_it_watchpoint): Use string_file. Use class to manage BFD reference counts
This introduces a new specialization of gdb::ref_ptr that can be used to manage BFD reference counts. Then it changes most places in gdb to use this new class, rather than explicit reference-counting or cleanups. This patch removes make_cleanup_bfd_unref. If you look you will see a couple of spots using "release" where a use of gdb_bfd_ref_ptr would be cleaner. These will be fixed in the next patch. I think this patch fixes some latent bugs. For example, it seems to me that previously objfpy_add_separate_debug_file leaked a BFD. I'm not 100% certain that the macho_symfile_read_all_oso change is correct. The existing code here is hard for me to follow. One goal of this sort of automated reference counting, though, is to make it more difficult to make logic errors; so hopefully the code is clear now. 2017-01-10 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com> * windows-tdep.c (windows_xfer_shared_library): Update. * windows-nat.c (windows_make_so): Update. * utils.h (make_cleanup_bfd_unref): Remove. * utils.c (do_bfd_close_cleanup, make_cleanup_bfd_unref): Remove. * symfile.h (symfile_bfd_open) (find_separate_debug_file_in_section): Return gdb_bfd_ref_ptr. * symfile.c (read_symbols, symbol_file_add) (separate_debug_file_exists): Update. gdb: Use C++11 std::chrono
This patch fixes a few problems with GDB's time handling. #1 - It avoids problems with gnulib's C++ namespace support On MinGW, the struct timeval that should be passed to gnulib's gettimeofday replacement is incompatible with libiberty's timeval_sub/timeval_add. That's because gnulib also replaces "struct timeval" with its own definition, while libiberty expects the system's. E.g., in code like this: gettimeofday (&prompt_ended, NULL); timeval_sub (&prompt_delta, &prompt_ended, &prompt_started); timeval_add (&prompt_for_continue_wait_time, &prompt_for_continue_wait_time, &prompt_delta); That's currently handled in gdb by not using gnulib's gettimeofday at all (see common/gdb_sys_time.h), but that #undef hack won't work with if/when we enable gnulib's C++ namespace support, because that mode adds compile time warnings for uses of ::gettimeofday, which are hard errors with -Werror. #2 - But there's an elephant in the room: gettimeofday is not monotonic... We're using it to: a) check how long functions take, for performance analysis b) compute when in the future to fire events in the event-loop c) print debug timestamps But that's exactly what gettimeofday is NOT meant for. Straight from the man page: ~~~ The time returned by gettimeofday() is affected by discontinuous jumps in the system time (e.g., if the system administrator manually changes the system time). If you need a monotonically increasing clock, see clock_gettime(2). ~~~ std::chrono (part of the C++11 standard library) has a monotonic clock exactly for such purposes (std::chrono::steady_clock). This commit switches to use that instead of gettimeofday, fixing all the issues mentioned above. gdb/ChangeLog: 2016-11-23 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * Makefile.in (SFILES): Add common/run-time-clock.c. Make gdb_stdout&co be per UI
We need to have these send output to the proper UI. However, this patch still make them look like globals. Kind of like __thread variables, if you will. Changing everything throughout to write something like current_ui->gdb_stdout instead would be massive overkill, IMNSHO. This leaves gdb_stdtargin/stdtarg/stdtargerr global, but maybe that was a mistake, I'm not sure -- IIRC, MI formats target I/O differently, so if we have a separate MI channel, then I guess target output should go there instead of to gdb's stdout. OTOH, maybe GDB should send that instead to "set inferior-tty", instead of multiplexing it over MI. We can always fix those later when it gets clearer where they should go. gdb/ChangeLog: 2016-06-21 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * main.c (gdb_stdout, gdb_stderr, gdb_stdlog, gdb_stdin): Delete globals. Make host_address_to_string/gdb_print_host_address cast parameter to 'void *'
Fixes a set of errors like: ../../src/gdb/symfile-debug.c: In function ‘int debug_qf_map_symtabs_matching_filename(objfile*, const char*, const char*, int (*)(symtab*, void*), void*)’: ../../src/gdb/symfile-debug.c:137:39: error: invalid conversion from ‘int (*)(symtab*, void*)’ to ‘const void*’ [-fpermissive] host_address_to_string (callback), ^ Note this has to work with data and function pointers. In C++11 we may perhaps do something a bit safer, but we're not there yet, and I don't think it really matters. For now just always do a simple C-style cast in host_address_to_string itself. Remove use of stdbool.h in GDB sources.
Using type bool from stdbool unfortunately causes problems trying to build GDB on AiX and Solaris: In file included from ../../src/gdb/utils.h:24:0, from ../../src/gdb/defs.h:707, from ../../src/gdb/utils.c:20: /[...]/curses.h:96:14: error: two or more data types in declaration specifiers typedef char bool; ^ make[2]: *** [utils.o] Error 1 In theory, the problem is in curses.h which, in both cases, do something similar. On Solaris: #if !defined(__cplusplus) && !defined(_BOOL) typedef char bool; #endif /* !defined(__cplusplus) && !defined(_BOOL) */ On AiX: #if !defined(__cplusplus) || (defined(__IBMCPP__) &&(__IBMCPP__<400)) #ifndef _BOOL #define _BOOL typedef int bool; #endif #endif You can reproduce the same problem by trying to compile: % cat toto.c #include <stdbool.h> #include <curses.h> % gcc -c toto.c In file included from toto.c:1:0: /[...]/curses.h:159:13: error: two or more data types in declaration specifiers typedef int bool; ^ This specific issue wouldn't occur if we included curses.h before including stdbool.h, and I looked at that just to be complete. Here is a small schematic representation of the include logic: * utils.c: -> defs.h -> utils.h -> stdbool.h -> gdb_curses.h -> curses.h Because defs.h should always be first on the list, it means that stdbool.h will always necessarily be included ahead of curses.h. But, thinking beyond this very specific issue, it shows that using stdbool.h is going to cause problems on these systems until either GCC fixes those includes in a way that makes them work; or we switch to C++. In the meantime, I think the path of least resistance is to revert the use of stdbool.h, and use integers, the way we've done up until now. The benefits of using type "bool" are modest, IMO, so not a great loss, and a temporary one. gdb/ChangeLog: * utils.h: Remove <stdbool.h> #include. (producer_is_gcc): Change return type to "int". * utils.c (producer_is_gcc): Change return type to int. Return 1 instead of true, and 0 instead of false. Adjust function documentation accordingly. |

Make internal_vproblem always work
internal_vproblem can be called (via malloc_failure) from almost the first line of captured_main, but it will crash if called before the first call to set_width. This commit makes internal_vproblem work at any time. There are two parts to this. If called before gdb_stderr is set up, internal_vproblem will fall back to printing the message on regular stderr and aborting. Rationalize "fatal" error handling outside of gdbserver
GDB and gdbserver have functions named "fatal" that are used in completely different ways. In gdbserver "fatal" is used to handle critical errors: it differs from "error" in that "fatal" causes gdbserver to exit whereas "error" does not. In GDB "fatal" is used to abort the current operation and return to the command level. This is implemented by throwing a non-error "RETURN_QUIT" exception. This commit removes GDB's "fatal" and "vfatal" functions entirely. The exception-throwing function "throw_vfatal" is renamed as "throw_vquit", and a new convenience function "throw_quit" is added. The small number of calls to "fatal" are replaced with calls to "throw_quit", making what is happening more obvious. This commit also modifies GDB's "throw_error" to call "throw_verror" rather than calling "throw_it" directly. This change means the assignment of RETURN_ERROR as the exception type now happens in precisely one place in GDB rather than two. gdb/ 2014-07-24 Gary Benson <gbenson@redhat.com> * exceptions.h (throw_vfatal): Renamed to... Remove `expout*' globals from parser-defs.h
This commit removes the "expout*" globals from our parser code, turning them into a structure that is passed when an expression needs to be evaluated. This is the initial step to make our parser less "globalized". This is mostly a mechanical patch, which creates a structure containing the "expout*" globals and then modify all the functions that handle them in order to take the structure as argument. It is big, and has been reviewed at least 4 times, so I think everything is covered. warn if "source" fails to open the file when from_tty == 0
Consider the following example: % gdb -q -batch -ex 'source nonexistant-file' [nothing] One would have at least expected the debugger to warn about not finding the file, similar to the error shown when using a more interactive mode. Eg: (gdb) source nonexistant-file nonexistant-file: No such file or directory. Not raising an error appears to be intentional, presumably in order to prevent this situation from stoping the execution of a GDB script. But the lack of at least a warning makes it harder for a user to diagnose any issue, if the file was expected to be there and readable. This patch adds a warning in that case: % gdb -q -batch -ex 'source nonexistant-file' warning: nonexistant-file: No such file or directory. gdb/ChangeLog: * utils.h (perror_warning_with_name): Add declaration. * utils.c (perror_warning_with_name): New function. * cli/cli-cmds.c (source_script_with_search): Add call to perror_warning_with_name if from_tty is nul. gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog: * gdb.base/source-nofile.gdb: New file. * gdb.base/source.exp: Add two tests verifying the behavior when the "source" command is given a non-existant filename. |

Fix PR symtab/15391
PR symtab/15391 is a failure with the DW_OP_GNU_implicit_pointer feature. I tracked it down to a logic error in read_pieced_value. The code truncates this_size_bits according to the type size and offset too early -- it should do it after taking bits_to_skip into account. This patch fixes the bug. While testing this, I also tripped across a latent bug because indirect_pieced_value does not sign-extend where needed. This patch fixes this bug as well. Finally, Pedro pointed out that a previous version implemented sign extension incorrectly. This version introduces a new gdb_sign_extend function for this. A couple of notes on this function: * It has the gdb_ prefix to avoid clashes with various libraries that felt free to avoid proper namespacing. There is a "sign_extend" function in a Tile GX header, in an SOM-related BFD header (and in sh64-tdep.c and as a macro in arm-wince-tdep.c, but those are ours...) * I looked at all the sign extensions in gdb and didn't see ones that I felt comfortable converting to use this function; in large part because I don't have a good way to test the conversion. Built and regtested on x86-64 Fedora 18. New test cases included; this required a minor addition to the DWARF assembler. Note that the DWARF CU made by implptrpiece.exp uses a funny pointer size in order to show the sign-extension bug on all platforms. * dwarf2loc.c (read_pieced_value): Truncate this_size_bits after taking bits_to_skip into account. Sign extend byte_offset. * utils.h (gdb_sign_extend): Declare. * utils.c (gdb_sign_extend): New function. * gdb.dwarf2/implptrpiece.exp: New file. * gdb.dwarf2/implptrconst.exp (d): New variable. Print d. * lib/dwarf2.exp (Dwarf::_location): Handle DW_OP_piece. |
