Dynamic TLS section symbols
It is possible to create shared libraries on PowerPC using -ftls-model=inital-exec or -ftls-model=local-exec. The first is half reasonable, getting you a shared library that can't be dlopen'd but otherwise is reasonable. The second is quite bad. Not only do you lose being able to dlopen, the library also has dynamic text relocations. Worse, the TPREL16_LO, TPREL16_HA and other TPREL16 dynamic relocs emitted were wrong, resulting in wrong values being applied by ld.so. Using the first TLS section symbol in dynamic relocations for local TLS symbols doesn't work. It's wrong because TLS symbols used by TLS relocs have values relative to the TLS segment, whereas the TLS section symbols are addresses. This patch instead uses a symbol index of zero which is used elsewhere by PowerPC on dynamic TLS relocs. It's not strictly ABI compliant to use a non-TLS symbol with TLS relocs but symbol index zero can be interpreted as "no symbol". Not using the first TLS section symbol means it doesn't need to be dynamic. The patch also fixes a further problem with PowerPC32 dynamic TPREL16* relocs, which shouldn't have the symbol value in the addend as we do for non-TLS symbols. bfd/ * elflink.c (_bfd_elf_omit_section_dynsym_default): Don't keep tls_sec. Define various symbols conditionally in shared libraries
The values of symbols in shared libraries like _end, _edata, and __bss_start are generally not that useful outside of the shared library. This patch defines them conditionally with PROVIDE, since a shared library might need the local value. An example is glibc ld.so local access to "_begin", "_etext" and "_end". (ld.so gains access to the local values by making the references using hidden visibility. That makes the definitions hidden too.) We can't use PROVIDE_HIDDEN in the linker scripts because the shared library might need the value of the symbol in the executable. An example is freebsd libc dynamic access to "_end". PR ld/22972 on SPARC.
This is a regression for the corner case of a hidden symbol in a PIC/PIE binary which is subject to both a new-style GOTDATA relocation and an old-style GOT relocation. In this case, depending on the link order, the R_SPARC_RELATIVE dynamic relocation for the GOT slot needed because of the old-style relocation can be replaced with R_SPARC_NONE coming from the GOTDATA relocation. Besides issues of capitalization and full-stops, I've - Split up help messages for target options, so that adding a new option does not mean loss of translation for all the others. - Embedded tabs have been removed, since a user might have tab stops set at other than 8 char intervals. - Added missing program name (%P). ld isn't the compiler. - Put %F and %X first (and removed %X if %F was present). This is -fpie -pie generating dynamic relocations in the text section, simply because no TLS transitions are applied in PIE mode. Fix PR ld/22727 (TLS breakage in PIC/PIE mode on SPARC).
There are actually 2 different bugs:
1. TLS transition is broken in PIE mode.
2. TLS is broken in PIC/PIE mode when the __tls_get_addr symbol
is versioned (as is the case on Linux and Solaris at least).
The 1st bug is fixed by reverting the problematic change for now
(note that the associated test doesn't pass on SPARC because of another
issue so there is no formal regression in the testsuite). The 2nd bug
is fixed by changing the call to _bfd_generic_link_add_one_symbol
on __tls_get_addr into a mere lookup in _bfd_sparc_elf_check_relocs.

ld: Remove PF_X from PT_PHDR segment
It was reasonable to mark PT_PHDR segment with PF_X for compatibility with UnixWare and Solaris linkers 20 years ago. But it is inappropriate today when the primary OS of GNU ld is Linux. This patch removes PF_X from PT_PHDR segment as gold does. readelf ngettext fixes
This patch is a first pass at fixing readelf message pluralization. I've deliberately not fixed the "out of memory" errors since it's very unlikely that they will ever be complaining about not being able to allocate for a single entry, and a few others where the size is very unlikely to be 1 byte. Then there are messages like this one: "Out of %lu items there are %zu bucket clashes (longest of %zu entries).\n" I suppose this could be split into three parts, "Of %lu items ", "there are %zu bucket clashes ", and "(longest of %zu entries).\n", each part being printed separately, but that might not be ideal for sentence construction in other languages. Support different ld --hash-style in the ld testsuite
When ld is running with something other than --hash-style=sysv by default, numerous tests need tweaking. Most of the changes just add --hash-style=sysv. Properly place the NULL STT_FILE symbol revistited
I was having a little closer look at what is going on here and noticed that HJ unconditionally emits a NULL STT_FILE symbol before emitting forced local symbols. That means we really don't need a second pass over forced local symbols. The only reason for two passes is when some forced local symbol can be emitted before the NULL STT_FILE. So I set about removing the second pass, updating the testsuite all over again. It's also unnecessary to emit the NULL STT_FILE when no previous file symbol has been emitted. bfd/ PR ld/17975 * elflink.c (struct elf_outext_info): Remove need_second_pass and second_pass. (elf_link_output_extsym): Delete code handling second forced local pass. Move code emitting NULL STT_FILE symbol later, so that it can be omitted if forced local is stripped. Add TLS support for 64-bit Sparc ELF.
* elf64-sparc.c (sparc64_elf_dyn_relocs,
sparc64_elf_link_hash_entry, sparc64_elf_obj_tdata): New structs.
(GOT_UNKNOWN, GOT_NORMAL, GOT_TLD_GD, GOT_TLD_IE,
sparc64_elf_hash_entry, sparc64_elf_tdata,
sparc64_elf_local_got_tls_type): New defines.
(sparc64_elf_mkobject): New function.
(sparc64_elf_link_hash_table): Add members for dynamic linker
sections PLT, RELPLT, DYNBSS, and RELBSS. Add tls_ldm_got
uion to track TLS GOT references. Add sym_sec to cache
mappings from local sym to section.
(link_hash_newfunc): New function.
(sparc64_elf_bfd_link_hash_table_create): Rename to
sparc64_elf_link_hash_table_create for consistency.
Pass link_hash_newfunc to _bfd_elf_link_hash_table_init.
(sparc64_elf_create_dynamic_sections): Initialize new section
members of sparc64_elf_link_hash_table. Only init srelbss
if not-shared.
(sparc64_elf_copy_indirect_symbol, sparc64_elf_tls_transition):
New functions.
(SPARC_NOP): Define.
(sparc64_elf_build_plt, sparc64_elf_plt_entry_offset,
sparc64_elf_plt_ptr_offset): Delete.
(sparc64_plt_entry_build): New function to build PLT entries
gradually instread of all at once at the end of linking.
(sparc64_elf_check_relocs): Delete dynobj, sgot, and srelgot
local vars. Get them from sparc64_elf_hash_table instead.
Check early on if r_symndx is in bounds. Handle TLS transitions.
Account for TLS GOT references and DF_STATIC_TLS, as needed.
For TLS relocs, record the tls_type in either
sparc64_elf_local_got_tls_type or sparc64_elf_hash_entry as
appropriate. For R_SPARC_TLS_{GD,LDM}_CALL, emit a reference
to the __tls_get_addr symbol. For PLT relocs, track references
via h->plt.refcount. When R_SPARC_{PC10,PC22,PC_HH22,PC_HM10,
PC_LM22} and h not-NULL, set h->non_got_ref. For global data
symbol references, count the number of relocations needed for
that symbol. For default switch case, don't error, this lets
the TLS relocs not explicitly handled by this function get
accepted.
(sparc64_elf_gc_mark_hook, sparc64_gc_sweep_hook): New functions.
(sparc64_elf_adjust_dynamic_symbol): Remove dynobj local var, get
it from sparc64_elf_hash_table. Store the real PLT offset
in h->plt.offset, and build PLT entries one at a time. Also
get .dynbss section pointer from htab.
(allocate_dynrelocs, readonly_dynrelocs,
sparc64_omit_section_dynsym): New functions.
(sparc64_elf_omit_section_dynsym): Use these new functions as
helpers.
(dtpoff_base, tpoff): New functions.
(sparc64_elf_relocate_section): Kill dynobj, sgot, and splt
locals, get them from sparc64_elf_hash_table. Handle TLS
relocations and refcounting in main relocation loop.
(sparc64_elf_finish_dynamic_symbol): Use
sparc64_elf_link_hash_table. Build PLT entries as we see
them. Handle TLS GOT relocations.
(sparc64_elf_finish_dynamic_sections): Get sgot and dynobj
from sparc64_elf_hash_table. Initialize only PLT header
not all entries since we not build PLT entries one by one.
(elf_backend_copy_indirect_symbol, bfd_elf64_mkobject,
elf_backend_gc_mark_hook, elf_backend_gc_sweep_hook,
elf_backend_can_gc_sections, elf_backend_can_refcount): Define.
ld/testsuite/
* ld-selective/sel-dump.exp: Do not exclude sparc64-*.
* ld-selective/selective.exp: Likewise.
* ld-sparc/sparc.exp: Add {32,64}-bit prefix to test
names so we know which one is failing. Run sparc64 TLS
tests on multi-arch sparc platforms.
