18d2988e5d gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: remove includes of early headers
Now that defs.h, server.h and common-defs.h are included via the
`-include` option, it is no longer necessary for source files to include
them. Remove all the inclusions of these files I could find. Update
the generation scripts where relevant.

1d506c26d9 Update copyright year range in header of all files managed by GDB
This commit is the result of the following actions:

  - Running gdb/copyright.py to update all of the copyright headers to
    include 2024,

  - Manually updating a few files the copyright.py script told me to
    update, these files had copyright headers embedded within the
    file,

  - Regenerating gdbsupport/Makefile.in to refresh it's copyright
    date,

  - Using grep to find other files that still mentioned 2023. If
    these files were updated last year from 2022 to 2023 then I've
    updated them this year to 2024.

I'm sure I've probably missed some dates. Feel free to fix them up as
you spot them.

f28085dfb4 Rely on value_ref_ptr::operator->
Simon pointed out some spots were doing val.get()->mumble, where val
is a value_ref_ptr. These were introduced by the function-to-method
script, replacing older code that passed the result of .get() to a
function.

Now that value.h is using methods, we can instead rely on operator->.
This patch replaces all the newly-introduced instances of this.

5d10a2041e gdb: add string_file::release method
A common pattern for string_file is to want to move out the internal
string buffer, because it is the result of the computation that we want
to return. It is the reason why string_file::string returns a non-const
reference, as explained in the comment. I think it would make sense to
have a dedicated method for that instead and make string_file::string
return a const reference.

This allows removing the explicit std::move in the typical case. Note
that compile_program::compute was missing a move, meaning that the
resulting string was copied. With the new version, it's not possible to
forget to move.

dda83cd783 gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: fix leading space vs tabs issues
Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example,
there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward
when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong
indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also
wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same
patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch.

So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully).

One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology
more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last
change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when
git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit"
anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are
interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you
already need a somewhat efficient way to do this.

Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this
trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past
the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke.
It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it).
Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't
really make archeology more difficult.

The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with
existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those
are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git
rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will
re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing
the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy).

02c6f3f1fc Do not auto-dereference null pointers in Ada MI varobj
The Ada varobj code automatically dereferences access types. This is
often handy, but it also does so for null pointers -- showing children
with empty values.

These children are weird, but even weirder when a variant type is
involved, because only the non-varying parts of the type are
displayed. This behavior conflicts a bit with my ongoing quest to
move the Ada code to use DWARF rather than gnat encodings, in that
reproducing this behavior with the DWARF code seems rather hacky.

So, this patch instead changes the Ada varobj code so that it does not
automatically dereference null pointers.

As this patch only affects Ada, and it was already reviewed internally
by Joel, I am checking it in.

	* ada-varobj.c (ada_varobj_get_ptr_number_of_children): Return 0

3ae7ab9992 Fix MI crash with Ada string access
I happened to notice that using -var-create at a certain spot in an
Ada program caused a crash. This happens because
ada_get_decoded_value can return NULL -- in particular, deeper in the
code it can hit this return in ada_type_of_array:

      descriptor = desc_bounds (arr);
      if (value_as_long (descriptor) == 0)
        return NULL;

This patch avoids the crash by handling this NULL return.

aff29d1c73 (Ada) -var-update crash for variable whose type is a reference to changeable
Consider the following variable, which is a string whose value
is not known at compile time, because it is the return value
from a function call (Get_Name):

   A : String := Get_Name;

If one tries to create a varobj for that variable, everything works
as expected:

    | (gdb) -var-create a * a
    | ^done,name="a",numchild="19",value="[19] \"Some kind of string\"",type="<ref> array (1 .. 19) of character",thread-id="1",has_more="0"

However, try then to request an update, regardless of whether the string
has changed or not, and we get a crash:

    | -var-update a
    | ~"/[...]/gdb/varobj.c:1379: internal-error: bool install_new_value(varobj*, value*, bool): Assertion `!value_lazy (var->value.get ())' failed.\nA problem internal to GDB has been detected,\nfurther debugging may prove unreliable.\nQuit this debugging session? (y or n) "

When the varobj gets created (-var-create), the expression is evaluated
and transformed into a value. The debugging information describes our
variables as a reference to an array of characters, so our value has
the corresponding type. We then call varobj.c::install_new_value
to store that value inside our varobj, and we see that this function
pretty starts by determining weither our varobj is changeable, via:

    | changeable = varobj_value_is_changeable_p (var);

(where 'var' is the varobj we are building, and where the function
varobj_value_is_changeable_p simply dispatches to the Ada version
of this routine: ada_value_is_changeable_p).

At this point, the varobj doesn't have a value, yet, but it does
have a type which was provided by varobj_create a little bit before
install_new_value was called. So ada_value_is_changeable_p uses that
to determine whether or not our type is changeable.

Since our type is a reference to an array, and that the value of
such objects is displayed as if there weren't a reference, it means
that our object is changeable -- in other words, if an element of
the string changes, then the "value" field of the varobj will change
accordingly. But unfortunately, ada_value_is_changeable_p mistakenly
returns false, because it is missing the handling of reference types.

As a consequence of this, install_new_value doesn't feel it is
necessary to fetch the value's contents, as explained by the following
comment inside that function:

  /* The new value might be lazy. If the type is changeable,
     that is we'll be comparing values of this type, fetch the
     value now. Otherwise, on the next update the old value
     will be lazy, which means we've lost that old value. */

This means that a lazy value gets installed inside our varobj
as a result of the mistake in ada_value_is_changeable_p.

Another important detail is that, after determining whether
our varobj is changeable or not, it then purposefully removes
the reference layer from our value:

  /* We are not interested in the address of references, and given
     that in C++ a reference is not rebindable, it cannot
     meaningfully change. So, get hold of the real value. */
  if (value)
    value = coerce_ref (value);

The consequence of those two facts on shows up only later, when
the user requests an update (-var-update). When doing so, GDB
evaluates the expression again into a value which is once more
a reference to a string, and then calls install_new_value again
to install the new value and report any changes. This time around,
the call to...

    | changeable = varobj_value_is_changeable_p (var);

... now gets a varobj which has a value, and one which had the reference
layer removed! So, this time, we classify the varobj correctly, and
say it is changeable. And because it is changeable, we then go into
the section of code in install_new_value which checks for changes,
where we need the varobj's value to not be lazy, as explained by
the comment we quoted above. That's what the assertion was about.

This patch fixes the issues by teaching ada_value_is_changeable_p
to ignore reference layers when evaluating a given varobj's type.

gdb/ChangeLog:

	* ada-varobj.c (ada_value_is_changeable_p): Add handling of
        TYPE_CODE_REF types.

gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog:

        * gdb.ada/mi_ref_changeable: New testcase.

Prior to this patch, this testcase reports 2 unresolved tests
(due to GDB hitting the internal error). With this patch, all
tests in this testcase pass.

Tested on x86_64-linux, no regression.

42a4f53d2b Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.

Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.

d91e9ea81d (Ada) Cleanup code by using ada_is_access_to_unconstrained_array call.
This patch just avoids code duplication by using a function we
introduced recently (ada_is_access_to_unconstrained_array).

gdb/ChangeLog:

    * ada-lang.c (ada_is_access_to_unconstrained_array): Remove static
    declaration.
    * ada-lang.h: add ada_is_access_to_unconstrained_array prototype.
    * ada-varobj.c (ada_varobj_get_number_of_children,
    ada_varobj_describe_child, ada_value_is_changeable_p): Cleanup code.

Tested on x86_64-linux.
No new testcase provided, as this is just a refactoring.

2963898f38 (Ada) Fix -var-list-children MI command for union type
Using this Ada code:

   type Union_Type (A : Boolean := False) is record
      case A is
         when True  => B : Integer;
         when False => C : Float;
      end case;
   end record;
   pragma Unchecked_Union (Union_Type);
   Ut : Union_Type := (A => True, B => 3);

In GDB/MI mode, once creating a varobj from variable "Ut" as follow:

(gdb) -var-create var1 * ut
^done,name="var1",numchild="2",value="{...}",type="foo.union_type",thread-id="1",has_more="0"

Printing the list of its children displays:

(gdb) -var-list-children 1 var1
^error,msg="Duplicate variable object name"

Whereas it should be

(gdb) -var-list-children 1 var1
^done,numchild="2",children=[child={name="var1.b",exp="b",numchild="0",value="3",type="integer",thread-id="1"},child={name="var1.c",exp="c",numchild="0",value="4.20389539e-45",type="float",thread-id="1"}],has_more="0"

The problem occurs because ada_varobj_describe_struct_child wasn't
handling unions. This patch fixes this.

gdb/ChangeLog:

        * ada-varobj.c (ada_varobj_describe_struct_child)
        (ada_varobj_describe_child): Handle union case like struct one.

798a7429f9 Remove some unused variables
This patch removes some unused variables, found with -Wunused. I have
not removed everything reported by -Wunused, because some expressions
such as

  struct type *arg_type = check_typedef (value_type);

in bfin-tdep.c could have an unexpected but important side-effect. I
removed others that I considered more low-risk, such as:

ddf0ea085b Make varobj::children an std::vector
This patch makes the children field of varobj an std::vector, and
updates the fallout.

One note is that varobj::parent must be made non-const. The reason is
that when a child deletes itself, it modifies its writes NULL to its
slot in its parent's children vector. With the VEC, the const didn't
made the parent's children vector content const, only the pointer to it,
but with std::vector, even the content is.

d7e747318f Eliminate make_cleanup_ui_file_delete / make ui_file a class hierarchy
This patch starts from the desire to eliminate
make_cleanup_ui_file_delete, but then goes beyond. It makes ui_file &
friends a real C++ class hierarchy, and switches temporary
ui_file-like objects to stack-based allocation.

- mem_fileopen -> string_file

mem_fileopen is replaced with a new string_file class that is treated
as a value class created on the stack. This alone eliminates most
make_cleanup_ui_file_delete calls, and, simplifies code a whole lot
(diffstat shows around 1k loc dropped.)

string_file's internal buffer is a std::string, thus the "string" in
the name. This simplifies the implementation much, compared to
mem_fileopen, which managed growing its internal buffer manually.

- ui_file_as_string, ui_file_strdup, ui_file_obsavestring all gone

The new string_file class has a string() method that provides direct
writable access to the internal std::string buffer. This replaced
ui_file_as_string, which forced a copy of the same data the stream had
inside. With direct access via a writable reference, we can instead
move the string out of the string_stream, avoiding deep string
copying.

Related, ui_file_xstrdup calls are replaced with xstrdup'ping the
stream's string, and ui_file_obsavestring is replaced by
obstack_copy0.

With all those out of the way, getting rid of the weird ui_file_put
mechanism was possible.

- New ui_file::printf, ui_file::puts, etc. methods

These simplify / clarify client code. I considered splitting
client-code changes, like these, e.g.:

  -  stb = mem_fileopen ();
  -  fprintf_unfiltered (stb, "%s%s%s",
  -		      _("The valid values are:\n"),
  -		      regdesc,
  -		      _("The default is \"std\"."));
  +  string_file stb;
  +  stb.printf ("%s%s%s",
  +	      _("The valid values are:\n"),
  +	      regdesc,
  +	      _("The default is \"std\"."));

In two steps, with the first step leaving fprintf_unfiltered (etc.)
calls in place, and only afterwards do a pass to change all those to
call stb.printf etc.. I didn't do that split, because (when I tried),
it turned out to be pointless make-work: the first pass would have to
touch the fprintf_unfiltered line anyway, to replace "stb" with
"&stb".

- gdb_fopen replaced with stack-based objects

This avoids the need for cleanups or unique_ptr's. I.e., this:

      struct ui_file *file = gdb_fopen (filename, "w");
      if (filename == NULL)
 	perror_with_name (filename);
      cleanups = make_cleanup_ui_file_delete (file);
      // use file.
      do_cleanups (cleanups);

is replaced with this:

      stdio_file file;
      if (!file.open (filename, "w"))
 	perror_with_name (filename);
      // use file.

- odd contorsions in null_file_write / null_file_fputs around when to
  call to_fputs / to_write eliminated.

- Global null_stream object

A few places that were allocating a ui_file in order to print to
"nowhere" are adjusted to instead refer to a new 'null_stream' global
stream.

- TUI's tui_sfileopen eliminated.  TUI's ui_file much simplified

The TUI's ui_file was serving a dual purpose. It supported being used
as string buffer, and supported being backed by a stdio FILE. The
string buffer part is gone, replaced by using of string_file. The
'FILE *' support is now much simplified, by making the TUI's ui_file
inherit from stdio_file.

61baf725ec update copyright year range in GDB files
This applies the second part of GDB's End of Year Procedure, which
updates the copyright year range in all of GDB's files.

gdb/ChangeLog:

        Update copyright year range in all GDB files.

2f408ecb92 Use ui_file_as_string throughout more
This replaces most of the remaining ui_file_xstrdup calls with
ui_file_as_string calls. Whenever a call was replaced, that led to a
cascade of other necessary adjustments throughout, to make the code
use std::string instead of raw pointers. And then whenever I added a
std::string as member of a struct, I needed to adjust
allocation/destruction of said struct to use new/delete instead of
xmalloc/xfree.

The stopping point was once gdb built again. These doesn't seem to be
a way to reasonably split this out further.

Maybe-not-obvious changes:

 - demangle_for_lookup returns a cleanup today. To get rid of that,
   and avoid unnecessary string dupping/copying, this introduces a
   demangle_result_storage type that the caller instantiates and
   passes to demangle_for_lookup.

 - Many methods returned a "char *" to indicate that the caller owns
   the memory and must free it. Those are switched to return a
   std::string instead. Methods that return a "view" into some
   internal string return a "const char *" instead. I.e., we only
   copy/allocate when necessary.

b09e2c591f Constify some parameters in the varobj code
To make it clear that some functions should not modify the variable
object, this patch adds the const qualifier where it makes sense to some
struct varobj * parameters. Most getters should take a const pointer to
guarantee they don't modify the object.

Unfortunately, I couldn't add it to some callbacks (such as name_of_child).
In the C implementation, they call c_describe_child, which calls
varobj_get_path_expr. varobj_get_path_expr needs to modify the object in
order to cache the computed value. It therefore can't take a const
pointer, and it affects the whole call chain. I suppose that's where you
would use a "mutable" in C++.

I did that to make sure there was no other cases like the one fixed in
the previous patch. I don't think it can hurt.

4a0ca9ec1e [Ada/varobj] number of children of null pointer to dynamic array.
This is preparation work to avoid a regression in the Ada/varobj.
An upcoming patch is going to add support for types in DWARF
which have dynamic properties whose value is a reference to another
DIE.

Consider for instance the following declaration:

   type Variant_Type (N : Int := 0) is record
      F : String(1 .. N) := (others => 'x');
   end record;
   type Variant_Type_Access is access all Variant_Type;
   VTA : Variant_Type_Access := null;

This declares a variable "VTA" which is an access (=pointer)
to a variant record Variant_Type. This record contains two
components, the first being "N" (the discriminant), and the
second being "F", an array whose lower bound is 1, and whose
upper bound depends on the value of "N" (the discriminant).

Of interest to us, here, is that second component ("F"), and
in particular its bounds. The debugging info, and in particular
the info for the array looks like the following...

        .uleb128 0x9    # (DIE (0x91) DW_TAG_array_type)
        .long   .LASF16 # DW_AT_name: "bar__variant_type__T2b"
        .long   0xac    # DW_AT_GNAT_descriptive_type
        .long   0x2cb   # DW_AT_type
        .long   0xac    # DW_AT_sibling
        .uleb128 0xa    # (DIE (0xa2) DW_TAG_subrange_type)
        .long   0xc4    # DW_AT_type
        .long   0x87    # DW_AT_upper_bound
        .byte 0 # end of children of DIE 0x91

... where the upper bound of the array's subrange type is a reference
to "n"'s DIE (0x87):

        .uleb128 0x8    # (DIE (0x87) DW_TAG_member)
        .ascii "n\0"    # DW_AT_name
        [...]

Once the patch to handle this dynamic property gets applied,
this is what happens when creating a varobj for variable "VTA"
(whose value is null), and then trying to list its children:

    (gdb)
    -var-create vta * vta
    ^done,name="vta",numchild="2",value="0x0",
          type="bar.variant_type_access",has_more="0"
    (gdb)
    -var-list-children 1 vta
    ^done,numchild="2",
          children=[child={name="vta.n",[...]},
                    child={name="vta.f",exp="f",
                           numchild="43877616",  <<<<-----
                           value="[43877616]",   <<<<-----
                           type="array (1 .. n) of character"}],
          has_more="0"

It has an odd number of children.

In this case, we cannot really determine the number of children,
since that number depends on the value of a field in a record
for which we do not have a value. Up to now, the value we've been
displaying is zero - meaning we have an empty array.

What happens in this case, is that, because the VTA is a null pointer,
we're not able to resolve the pointer's target type, and therefore
end up asking ada_varobj_get_array_number_of_children to return
the number of elements in that array; for that, it relies blindly
on get_array_bounds, which assumes the type is no longer dynamic,
and therefore the reads the bound without seeing that it's value
is actually a reference rather than a resolved constant.

This patch prevents the issue by explicitly handling the case of
dynamic arrays, and returning zero child in that case.

gdb/ChangeLog:

        * ada-varobj.c (ada_varobj_get_array_number_of_children):
        Return zero if PARENT_VALUE is NULL and parent_type's

9a9a760829 Improve MI -var-info-path-expression for nested struct/union case.
https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2014-05/msg00383.html

The MI command -var-info-path-expression currently does not handle
non-anonymous structs / unions nested within other structs / unions,
it will skip parts of the expression. Consider this example:

  ## START EXAMPLE ##
  $ cat ex.c
  #include <string.h>

  int
  main ()
  {
    struct s1
    {
      int a;
    };

    struct ss
    {
      struct s1 x;
    };

    struct ss an_ss;
    memset (&an_ss, 0, sizeof (an_ss));
    return 0;
  }
  $ gcc -g -o ex.x ex.c
  $ gdb ex.x
  (gdb) break 18
  Breakpoint 1 at 0x80483ba: file ex.c, line 18.
  (gdb) run
  Starting program: /home/user/ex.x

  Breakpoint 1, main () at ex.c:18
  18	  return 0;
  (gdb) interpreter-exec mi "-var-create an_ss * an_ss"
  (gdb) interpreter-exec mi "-var-list-children an_ss"
  ^done,numchild="1",children=[child={name="an_ss.x",exp="x",numchild="1",type="struct s1",thread-id="1"}],has_more="0"
  (gdb) interpreter-exec mi "-var-list-children an_ss.x"
  ^done,numchild="1",children=[child={name="an_ss.x.a",exp="a",numchild="0",type="int",thread-id="1"}],has_more="0"
  (gdb) interpreter-exec mi "-var-list-children an_ss.x.a"
  ^done,numchild="0",has_more="0"
  (gdb) interpreter-exec mi "-var-info-path-expression an_ss.x.a"
  ^done,path_expr="(an_ss).a"
  (gdb) print (an_ss).a
  There is no member named a.
  ## END EXAMPLE ##

Notice that the path expression returned is wrong, and as a result
the print command fails.

This patch adds a new method to the varobj_ops structure called
is_path_expr_parent, to allow language specific control over finding
the parent varobj, the current logic becomes the C/C++ version and is
extended to handle the nested cases. No other language currently uses
this code, so all other languages just get a default method.

With this patch, the above example now finishes like this:

  ## START EXAMPLE ##
  $ gdb ex.x
  (gdb) break 18
  Breakpoint 1 at 0x80483ba: file ex.c, line 18.
  (gdb) run
  Starting program: /home/user/ex.x

  Breakpoint 1, main () at ex.c:18
  18	  return 0;
  (gdb) interpreter-exec mi "-var-list-children an_ss"
  ^done,numchild="1",children=[child={name="an_ss.x",exp="x",numchild="1",type="struct s1",thread-id="1"}],has_more="0"
  (gdb) interpreter-exec mi "-var-list-children an_ss.x"
  ^done,numchild="1",children=[child={name="an_ss.x.a",exp="a",numchild="0",type="int",thread-id="1"}],has_more="0"
  (gdb) interpreter-exec mi "-var-list-children an_ss.x.a"
  ^done,numchild="0",has_more="0"
  (gdb) interpreter-exec mi "-var-info-path-expression an_ss.x.a"
  ^done,path_expr="((an_ss).x).a"
  (gdb) print ((an_ss).x).a
  $1 = 0
  ## END EXAMPLE ##

Notice that the path expression is now correct, and the print is a
success.

f30b8b38d4 varobj/Ada: Missing children for interface-wide tagged types
Consider the following code:

   type Element is abstract tagged null record;
   type GADataType is interface;
   type Data_Type is new Element and GADataType with record
      I : Integer := 42;
   end record;
   Result1 : Data_Type;
   GGG1    : GADataType'Class := GADataType'Class (Result1);

When trying to create a varobj for variable ggg1, GDB currently
returns an object which has no child:

    -var-create ggg1 * ggg1
    ^done,name="ggg1",numchild="0",[...]

This is incorrect, it should return an object which has one child
(field "i"). This is because tagged-type objects are dynamic, and
we need to apply a small transformation in order to get their actual
type. This is already done on the GDB/CLI side in ada-valprint,
and it needs to be done on the ada-varobj side as well.

181875a4ab Varobj support for Ada.
This patch adds varobj support for Ada variables. Most of the code
is implemented in a separate Ada-specific file called ada-varobj.c.
The only bits in varobj.c are the functions used as the hooks in
the language-specific varobj's vector.

gdb/ChangeLog:

        * ada-varobj.h, ada-varobj.c: New files.
        * Makefile.in (SFILES): Add ada-varobj.c.
        (HFILES_NO_SRCDIR): Add ada-varobj.h.
        (COMMON_OBS): Add ada-varobj.o.
