Introduce "struct ui" This is a step towards supporting multiple consoles/MIs, each on its own stdio streams / terminal. See intro comment in top.h. (I've had trouble picking a name for this object. I've started out with "struct console" originally. But then this is about MI as well, and there's "interpreter-exec console", which is specifically about the CLI... So I changed to "struct terminal", but, then we have a terminal object that works when the input is not a terminal as well ... Then I sort of gave up and renamed it to "struct top_level". But it then gets horribly confusing when we talk about the "top level interpreter that's running on the current top level". In the end, I realized we're already sort of calling this "ui", in struct ui_out, struct ui_file, and a few coments here and there.) gdb/ChangeLog: 2016-06-21 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * event-top.c: Update readline-related comments. (input_handler, call_readline): Delete globals. (gdb_rl_callback_handler): Call the current UI's input_handler method. (change_line_handler): Adjust to set current UI's properties instead of globals. Remove some text from --version output I happened to notice recently that "gdb --version" says: GNU gdb (GDB) 8.0.50.20170911-git Copyright (C) 2017 Free Software Foundation, Inc. License GPLv3+: GNU GPL version 3 or later <http://gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html> This is free software: you are free to change and redistribute it. There is NO WARRANTY, to the extent permitted by law. Type "show copying" and "show warranty" for details. This GDB was configured as "x86_64-pc-linux-gnu". Type "show configuration" for configuration details. For bug reporting instructions, please see: <http://www.gnu.org/software/gdb/bugs/>. Find the GDB manual and other documentation resources online at: <http://www.gnu.org/software/gdb/documentation/>. For help, type "help". Type "apropos word" to search for commands related to "word". This is a bit on the wordy side, but also references interactive commands, which I think doesn't really make sense for --version. This patch removes some text from --version, while leaving it in the "show version" output. It also adds a newline between the URLs and the "For help, ..." text, because I thought that was easier to read. Finally, it indents one of the URLs, since that was simpler to read, but not the other URL, because the current format is specified by the GNU coding standards section on "--version". Now the --version output looks like: GNU gdb (GDB) 8.1.50.20180511-git Copyright (C) 2018 Free Software Foundation, Inc. License GPLv3+: GNU GPL version 3 or later <http://gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html> This is free software: you are free to change and redistribute it. There is NO WARRANTY, to the extent permitted by law. gdb/17347 - Regression: GDB stopped on run with attached process Doing: gdb --pid=PID -ex run Results in GDB getting a SIGTTIN, and thus ending stopped. That's usually indicative of a missing target_terminal_ours call. E.g., from the PR: $ sleep 1h & p=$!; sleep 0.1; gdb -batch sleep $p -ex run [1] 28263 [1] Killed sleep 1h [2]+ Stopped gdb -batch sleep $p -ex run The workaround is doing: gdb -ex "attach $PID" -ex "run" instead of gdb [-p] $PID -ex "run" With the former, gdb waits for the attach command to complete before moving on to the "run" command, because the interpreter is in sync mode at this point, within execute_command. But for the latter, attach_command is called directly from captured_main, and thus misses that waiting. IOW, "run" is running before the attach continuation has run, before the program stops and attach completes. The broken terminal settings are just one symptom of that. Any command that queries or requires input results in the same. The fix is to wait in catch_command_errors (which is specific to main.c nowadays), just like we wait in execute_command. gdb/ChangeLog: 2014-09-11 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> PR gdb/17347 * main.c: Include "infrun.h". Merge async and sync code paths some more This patch makes the execution control code use largely the same mechanisms in both sync- and async-capable targets. This means using continuations and use the event loop to react to target events on sync targets as well. The trick is to immediately mark infrun's event loop source after resume instead of calling wait_for_inferior. Then fetch_inferior_event is adjusted to do a blocking wait on sync targets. Tested on x86_64 Fedora 20, native and gdbserver, with and without "maint set target-async off". gdb/ChangeLog: 2015-09-09 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * breakpoint.c (bpstat_do_actions_1, until_break_command): Don't check whether the target can async. * inf-loop.c (inferior_event_handler): Only call target_async if the target can async. * infcall.c: Include top.h and interps.h. /* This function returns a pointer to the string that is used
by gdb for its command prompt. */
gdb: make string-like set show commands use std::string variable String-like settings (var_string, var_filename, var_optional_filename, var_string_noescape) currently take a pointer to a `char *` storage variable (typically global) that holds the setting's value. I'd like to "mordernize" this by changing them to use an std::string for storage. An obvious reason is that string operations on std::string are often easier to write than with C strings. And they avoid having to do any manual memory management. Another interesting reason is that, with `char *`, nullptr and an empty string often both have the same meaning of "no value". String settings are initially nullptr (unless initialized otherwise). But when doing "set foo" (where `foo` is a string setting), the setting now points to an empty string. For example, solib_search_path is nullptr at startup, but points to an empty string after doing "set solib-search-path". This leads to some code that needs to check for both to check for "no value". Or some code that converts back and forth between NULL and "" when getting or setting the value. I find this very error-prone, because it is very easy to forget one or the other. With std::string, we at least know that the variable is not "NULL". There is only one way of representing an empty string setting, that is with an empty string. I was wondering whether the distinction between NULL and "" would be important for some setting, but it doesn't seem so. If that ever happens, it would be more C++-y and self-descriptive to use optional<string> anyway. Actually, there's one spot where this distinction mattered, it's in init_history, for the test gdb.base/gdbinit-history.exp. init_history sets the history filename to the default ".gdb_history" if it sees that the setting was never set - if history_filename is nullptr. If history_filename is an empty string, it means the setting was explicitly cleared, so it leaves it as-is. With the change to std::string, this distinction doesn't exist anymore. This can be fixed by moving the code that chooses a good default value for history_filename to _initialize_top. This is ran before -ex commands are processed, so an -ex command can then clear that value if needed (what gdb.base/gdbinit-history.exp tests). Another small improvement, in my opinion is that we can now easily give string parameters initial values, by simply initializing the global variables, instead of xstrdup-ing it in the _initialize function. In Python and Guile, when registering a string-like parameter, we allocate (with new) an std::string that is owned by the param_smob (in Guile) and the parmpy_object (in Python) objects. This patch started by changing all relevant add_setshow_* commands to take an `std::string *` instead of a `char **` and fixing everything that failed to build. That includes of course all string setting variable and their uses. string_option_def now uses an std::string also, because there's a connection between options and settings (see add_setshow_cmds_for_options). The add_path function in source.c is really complex and twisted, I'd rather not try to change it to work on an std::string right now. Instead, I added an overload that copies the std:string to a `char *` and back. This means more copying, but this is not used in a hot path at all, so I think it is acceptable. Fix error message and use-after-free on errors in nested sourced files Errors that happen in nested sourced files (when a sourced file sources another file) lead to a wrong error message, or use-after-free. For example, if I put this in "a.gdb": command_that_doesnt_exist and this in "b.gdb": source a.gdb and try to "source b.gdb" in GDB, the result may look like this: (gdb) source b.gdb b.gdb:1: Error in sourced command file: _that_doesnt_exist:1: Error in sourced command file: Undefined command: "command_that_doesnt_exist". Try "help". Notice the wrong file name where "a.gdb" should be. The exact result may differ, depending on the feelings of the memory allocator. What happens is: - The "source a.gdb" command is saved by command_line_append_input_line in command_line_input's static buffer. - Since we are sourcing a file, the script_from_file function stores the script name (a.gdb) in the source_file_name global. However, it doesn't do a copy, it just saves a pointer to command_line_input's static buffer. - The "command_that_doesnt_exist" command is saved by command_line_append_input_line in command_line_input's static buffer. Depending on what xrealloc does, source_file_name may now point to freed memory, or at the minimum the data it was pointing to was overwritten. - When the error is handled in script_from_file, we dererence source_file_name to print the name of the file in which the error occured. To fix it, I made source_file_name an std::string, so that keeps a copy of the file name instead of pointing to a buffer with a too small lifetime. With this patch, the expected filename is printed, and no use-after-free occurs: (gdb) source b.gdb b.gdb:1: Error in sourced command file: a.gdb:1: Error in sourced command file: Undefined command: "command_that_doesnt_exist". Try "help". I passed explicit template parameters to make_scoped_restore (<std::string, const std::string &>), so that the second parameter is passed by reference and avoid a copy. It was not as obvious as I first thought to change gdb.base/source.exp to test this, because source commands inside sourced files are interpreted relative to GDB's current working directory, not the directory of the currently sourced file. As a workaround, I moved the snippet that tests errors after the snippet that adds the source directory to the search path. This way, the "source source-error-1.gdb" line in source-error.exp manages to find the file. For reference, here is what ASAN reports when use-after-free occurs: (gdb) source b.gdb ================================================================= ==18498==ERROR: AddressSanitizer: Remove cmd_cfunc_ftype This removes cmd_cfunc_ftype and the non-const overload of add_cmd; then fixes up the fallout. For the most part this patch is straightforward. There are a few files (go32-nat.c, windows-nat.c, and gnu-nat.c) that I could not compile; so I made a best effort there. gdb/ChangeLog 2017-11-07 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com> * go32-nat.c (go32_sysinfo, go32_sldt, go32_sgdt, go32_sidt) (go32_pde, go32_pte, go32_pte_for_address): Constify. * gnu-nat.c (_parse_bool_arg, show_thread_default_pause_cmd) (set_thread_default_pause_cmd, set_thread_default_run_cmd) (show_thread_default_run_cmd, set_thread_default_detach_sc_cmd) (parse_int_arg, show_thread_default_detach_sc_cmd) (set_signals_cmd, show_signals_cmd, set_sig_thread_cmd) (show_sig_thread_cmd, set_stopped_cmd, show_stopped_cmd) (set_exceptions_cmd, show_exceptions_cmd, set_task_pause_cmd) (show_task_pause_cmd, set_task_detach_sc_cmd) (show_task_detach_sc_cmd, set_task_exc_port_cmd) (set_noninvasive_cmd, set_thread_pause_cmd) (show_thread_pause_cmd, set_thread_run_cmd, show_thread_run_cmd) (set_thread_detach_sc_cmd, show_thread_detach_sc_cmd) (set_thread_exc_port_cmd, thread_takeover_sc_cmd): Constify. * windows-nat.c (display_selectors): Constify. * cli/cli-decode.h (struct cmd_list_element) <function>: Remove non-const "cfunc". * cli/cli-decode.c (set_cmd_cfunc): Remove non-const overload. gdb: remove static buffer in command_line_input [I sent this earlier today, but I don't see it in the archives. Resending it through a different computer / SMTP.] The use of the static buffer in command_line_input is becoming problematic, as explained here [1]. In short, with this patch [2] that attempt to fix a post-hook bug, when running gdb.base/commands.exp, we hit a case where we read a "define" command line from a script file using command_command_line_input. The command line is stored in command_line_input's static buffer. Inside the define command's execution, we read the lines inside the define using command_line_input, which overwrites the define command, in command_line_input's static buffer. After the execution of the define command, execute_command does a command look up to see if a post-hook is registered. For that, it uses a now stale pointer that used to point to the define command, in the static buffer, causing a use-after-free. Note that the pointer in execute_command points to the dynamically-allocated buffer help by the static buffer in command_line_input, not to the static object itself, hence why we see a use-after-free. Fix that by removing the static buffer. I initially changed command_line_input and other related functions to return an std::string, which is the obvious but naive solution. The thing is that some callees don't need to return an allocated string, so this this an unnecessary pessimization. I changed it to passing in a reference to an std::string buffer, which the callee can use if it needs to return dynamically-allocated content. It fills the buffer and returns a pointers to the C string inside. The callees that don't need to return dynamically-allocated content simply don't use it. So, it started with modifying command_line_input as described above, all the other changes derive directly from that. One slightly shady thing is in handle_line_of_input, where we now pass a pointer to an std::string's internal buffer to readline's history_value function, which takes a `char *`. I'm pretty sure that this function does not modify the input string, because I was able to change it (with enough massaging) to take a `const char *`. A subtle change is that we now clear a UI's line buffer using a SCOPE_EXIT in command_line_handler, after executing the command. This was previously done by this line in handle_line_of_input: /* We have a complete command line now. Prepare for the next command, but leave ownership of memory to the buffer . */ cmd_line_buffer->used_size = 0; I think the new way is clearer.
