There are a total of 53 system calls (aside from ioctl) that pass a time_t or derived data structure as an argument, and in order to extend time_t to 64-bit, we have to replace them with new system calls and keep providing backwards compatibility. To avoid adding completely new and untested code for this purpose, we introduce a new CONFIG_64BIT_TIME symbol. Every architecture that supports new 64 bit time_t syscalls enables this config. After this is done for all architectures, the CONFIG_64BIT_TIME symbol will be deleted. Linux kernel
============
There are several guides for kernel developers and users. These guides can
be rendered in a number of formats, like HTML and PDF. Please read
Documentation/admin-guide/README.rst first.
In order to build the documentation, use ``make htmldocs`` or
``make pdfdocs``. The formatted documentation can also be read online at:
https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/
There are various text files in the Documentation/ subdirectory,
several of them using the Restructured Text markup notation.
See Documentation/00-INDEX for a list of what is contained in each file.
Please read the Documentation/process/changes.rst file, as it contains the
requirements for building and running the kernel, and information about
the problems which may result by upgrading your kernel.
