The root-lock is dropped before dev_hard_start_xmit() is invoked and after setting the __QDISC___STATE_RUNNING bit. If the Qdisc owner is preempted by another sender/task with a higher priority then this new sender won't be able to submit packets to the NIC directly instead they will be enqueued into the Qdisc. The NIC will remain idle until the Qdisc owner is scheduled again and finishes the job. By serializing every task on the ->busylock then the task will be preempted by a sender only after the Qdisc has no owner. Always serialize on the busylock on PREEMPT_RT. Linux kernel ============ There are several guides for kernel developers and users. These guides can be rendered in a number of formats, like HTML and PDF. Please read Documentation/admin-guide/README.rst first. In order to build the documentation, use ``make htmldocs`` or ``make pdfdocs``. The formatted documentation can also be read online at: https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/ There are various text files in the Documentation/ subdirectory, several of them using the Restructured Text markup notation. Please read the Documentation/process/changes.rst file, as it contains the requirements for building and running the kernel, and information about the problems which may result by upgrading your kernel.
