The accelerator devices are exposed to user-space using a dedicated
major. In addition, they are represented in /dev with new, dedicated
device char names: /dev/accel/accel*. This is done to make sure any
user-space software that tries to open a graphic card won't open
the accelerator device by mistake.
The above implies that the minor numbering should be separated from
the rest of the DRM devices. However, to avoid code duplication, we
want the drm_minor structure to be able to represent the accelerator
device.
To achieve this, we add a new drm_minor* to drm_device that represents
the accelerator device. This pointer is initialized for drivers that
declare they handle compute accelerator, using a new driver feature
flag called DRIVER_COMPUTE_ACCEL. It is important to note that this
driver feature is mutually exclusive with DRIVER_RENDER. Devices that
want to expose both graphics and compute device char files should be
handled by two drivers that are connected using the auxiliary bus
framework.
In addition, we define a different IDR to handle the accelerators
minors. This is done to make the minor's index be identical to the
device index in /dev/. Any access to the IDR is done solely
by functions in accel_drv.c, as the IDR is define as static. The
DRM core functions call those functions in case they detect the minor's
type is DRM_MINOR_ACCEL.
We define a separate accel_open function (from drm_open) that the
accel drivers should set as their open callback function. Both these
functions eventually call the same drm_open_helper(), which had to be
changed to be non-static so it can be called from accel_drv.c.
accel_open() only partially duplicates drm_open as I removed some code
from it that handles legacy devices.
To help new drivers, I defined DEFINE_DRM_ACCEL_FOPS macro to easily
set the required function operations pointers structure.

Add a new Kconfig for the accel subsystem. The Kconfig currently
contains only the basic CONFIG_DRM_ACCEL option that will be used to
decide whether to compile the accel registration code. Therefore, the
kconfig option is defined as bool.
The accel code will be compiled as part of drm.ko and will be called
directly from the DRM core code. The reason we compile it as part of
drm.ko and not as a separate module is because of cyclic dependency
between drm.ko and the separate module (if it would have existed).
This is due to the fact that DRM core code calls accel functions and
vice-versa.
The accelerator devices will be exposed to the user space with a new,
dedicated major number - 261.
The accel init function registers the new major number as a char device
and create corresponding sysfs and debugfs root entries, similar to
what is done in DRM init function.
I added a new header called drm_accel.h to include/drm/, that will hold
the prototypes of the drm_accel.c functions. In case CONFIG_DRM_ACCEL
is set to 'N', that header will contain empty inline implementations of
those functions, to allow DRM core code to compile successfully
without dependency on CONFIG_DRM_ACCEL.
I Updated the MAINTAINERS file accordingly with the newly added folder
and I have taken the liberty to appropriate the dri-devel mailing list
and the dri-devel IRC channel for the accel subsystem.

Move the nomodeset kernel parameter to drivers/video to make it
available to non-DRM drivers. Adapt the interface, but keep the DRM
interface drm_firmware_drivers_only() to avoid churn within DRM. The
function should later be inlined into callers.
The parameter disables any DRM graphics driver that would replace a
driver for firmware-provided scanout buffers. It is an option to easily
fallback to basic graphics output if the hardware's native driver is
broken. Moving it to a more prominent location wil make it available
to fbdev as well.

This feature basically re-submits one job after another to
figure out which one was the one causing a hang.
This is obviously incompatible with gang-submit which requires
that multiple jobs run at the same time. It's also absolutely
not helpful to crash the hardware multiple times if a clean
recovery is desired.
For testing and debugging environments we should rather disable
recovery alltogether to be able to inspect the state with a hw
debugger.
Additional to that the sw implementation is clearly buggy and causes
reference count issues for the hardware fence.

Move the vmap code for shadow-plane helpers from prepare_fb to
begin_fb_access helpers. Vunmap is now performed at the end of
the current pageflip, instead of the end of the following pageflip.
Reduces the duration of the mapping from while the framebuffer is
being displayed to just the atomic commit. This is safe as outside
of the pageflip, nothing should access the mapped buffer memory.
Unmapping the framebuffer BO memory early allows to reduce address-
space consumption and possibly allows for evicting the memory pages.
The change is effectively a rename of prepare_fb and cleanup_fb
implementations, plus updates to the shadow-plane init macro. As
there's no longer a prepare_fb helper for shadow planes, atomic
helpers will call drm_gem_plane_helper_prepare_fb() automatically.

Add {begin,end}_fb_access helpers to run at the beginning and end of
an atomic commit. The begin_fb_access helper acquires resources that
are necessary to perform the atomic commit. It it similar to prepare_fb,
except that the resources are to be released at the end of the commit.
Resources acquired by prepare_fb are held until after the next pageflip.
The end_fb_access helper performs the corresponding resource cleanup.
Atomic helpers call it with the new plane state. This is different from
cleanup_fb, which releases resources of the old plane state.

Implement the fbdev's read/write helpers with the same functions. Use
the generic fbdev's code as template. Convert all drivers.
DRM's fb helpers must implement regular I/O functionality in struct
fb_ops and possibly perform a damage update. Handle all this in the
same functions and convert drivers. The functionality has been used
as part of the generic fbdev code for some time. The drivers don't
set struct drm_fb_helper.fb_dirty, so they will not be affected by
damage handling.
For I/O memory, fb helpers now provide drm_fb_helper_cfb_read() and
drm_fb_helper_cfb_write(). Several drivers require these. Until now
tegra used I/O read and write, although the memory buffer appears to
be in system memory. So use _sys_ helpers now.

The fbdev helpers implement a damage worker that forwards fbdev
updates to the DRM driver. The worker's update logic depends on
the generic fbdev emulation. Separate the two via function pointer.
The generic fbdev emulation sets struct drm_fb_helper_funcs.fb_dirty,
a new callback that hides the update logic from the damage worker.
It's not possible to use the generic logic with other fbdev emulation,
because it contains additional code for the shadow buffering that
the generic emulation employs.
DRM drivers with internal fbdev emulation can set fb_dirty to their
own implementation if they require damage handling; although no such
drivers currently exist.

difficult to reasonably split to smaller pieces.
Convert the EDID loader to struct drm_edid. There's a functional change
in validation; it no longer tries to fix errors or filter invalid
blocks. It's stricter in this sense. Hopefully this will not be an

Having the EDID override debugfs directly update the EDID property is
problematic. The update is partial only. The driver has no way of
knowing it's been updated. Mode list is not updated. It's an
inconsistent state.
Detach debugfs EDID override from the property update completely. Only
set and reset a separate override EDID copy from debugfs, and have it
take effect only at detect (via EDID read). The copy is at
connector->edid_override, protected by connector->edid_override_mutex.
This also brings override EDID closer to firmware EDID in behaviour.
Add validation of the override EDID which we completely lacked.

The fb_base in struct drm_mode_config has been unused for a long time.
Some drivers set it and some don't leading to a very confusing state
where the variable can't be relied upon, because there's no indication
as to which driver sets it and which doesn't.
The only usage of fb_base is internal to two drivers so instead of trying
to force it into all the drivers to get it into a coherent state
completely remove it.

The new common dma-buf locking convention will require buffer importers
to hold the reservation lock around mapping operations. Make DRM GEM core
to take the lock around the vmapping operations and update DRM drivers to
use the locked functions for the case where DRM core now holds the lock.
This patch prepares DRM core and drivers to the common dynamic dma-buf
locking convention.

Provides a default CRTC state check handler for CRTCs that only have one
primary plane attached.
There are some drivers that duplicate this logic in their helpers, such as
simpledrm and ssd130x. Factor out this common code into a CRTC helper and
make drivers use it.

The subconnector property was created by drm_mode_create_tv_properties(),
but wasn't exposed to the userspace through the generic
atomic_get/set_property implementation, and wasn't stored in any generic
state structure.
Let's solve this.

There is two TV subconnector related properties registered by
drm_mode_create_tv_properties(): subconnector and select subconnector.
While the select subconnector property is stored in the kernel by the
drm_tv_connector_state structure, the subconnector property isn't stored
anywhere.
Worse, the select subconnector property is stored in a field called
subconnector, creating some ambiguity about which property content we're
accessing.
Let's rename that field to one called select_subconnector to make it move
obvious what it's about.

We currently have two sets of TV properties.
The first one is there to deal with analog TV properties, creating
properties such as the TV mode, subconnectors, saturation, hue and so on.
It's created by calling the drm_mode_create_tv_properties() function.
The second one is there to deal with properties that might be useful on a
TV, creating the overscan margins for example. It's created by calling the
drm_mode_create_tv_margin_properties().
However, we also have a drm_atomic_helper_connector_tv_reset() function
that will reset the TV margin properties to their default values, and thus
is supposed to be called for the latter set. This creates an ambiguity due
to the inconsistent naming.
We can thus rename the drm_atomic_helper_connector_tv_reset() function to
drm_atomic_helper_connector_tv_margins_reset() to remove that ambiguity
and hopefully make it more obvious.

Rename the atomic helper function drm_atomic_helper_check_crtc_state()
to drm_atomic_helper_check_crtc_primary_plane() and only check for an
attached primary plane. Adapt callers.
Instead of having one big function to check for various CRTC state
conditions, we rather want smaller functions that drivers can pick
individually.

When many entities are competing for the same run queue
on the same scheduler, we observe an unusually long wait
times and some jobs get starved. This has been observed on GPUVis.
The issue is due to the Round Robin policy used by schedulers
to pick up the next entity's job queue for execution. Under stress
of many entities and long job queues within entity some
jobs could be stuck for very long time in it's entity's
queue before being popped from the queue and executed
while for other entities with smaller job queues a job
might execute earlier even though that job arrived later
then the job in the long queue.
Fix:
Add FIFO selection policy to entities in run queue, chose next entity
on run queue in such order that if job on one entity arrived
earlier then job on another entity the first job will start
executing earlier regardless of the length of the entity's job
queue.
v2:
Switch to rb tree structure for entities based on TS of
oldest job waiting in the job queue of an entity. Improves next
entity extraction to O(1). Entity TS update
O(log N) where N is the number of entities in the run-queue

upgrade the callchain to drm_dbg() and drm_dev_dbg(); add a struct
_ddebug ptr parameter to them, and supply that additional param by
replacing the '_no_desc' flavor of dyndbg Factory macro currently used
with the flavor that supplies the descriptor.
NOTES:
The descriptor gives these fns access to the decorator flags, but they
do none of the dynamic-prefixing done by dynamic_emit_prefix(), which
is currently static.
DRM already has conventions for logging/messaging; just tossing
optional decorations on top probably wouldn't help. Instead, existing
flags (or new ones, perhaps 'sd' ala lspci) can be used to make
current message conventions optional. This suggests a new
drmdbg_prefix_emit() to handle prefixing locally.
For CONFIG_DRM_USE_DYNAMIC_DEBUG=N, just pass null descriptor.
desc->class_id is redundant with category parameter, but its
availability is dependent on desc.

When CONFIG_DRM_USE_DYNAMIC_DEBUG=y, the drm.debug API (a macro stack,
calling _+drm_*dbg() eventually) invokes a dyndbg Factory macro to
create a descriptor for each callsite, thus making them individually
>control-able.
In this case, the calls to _drm_*dbg are unreachable unless the
callsite is enabled. So those calls can short-circuit their early
do-nothing returns. Provide and use __drm_debug_enabled(), to do this
when config'd, or the _raw flags-check otherwize.
And since dyndbg is in use, lets also instrument the remaining users
of drm_debug_enabled, by wrapping the _raw in a macro with a:
pr_debug("todo: is this frequent enough to optimize ?\n");
For CONFIG_DRM_USE_DYNAMIC_DEBUG=n, do no site instrumenting at all,
since JUMP_LABEL might be off, and we don't want to make work.
With drm, amdgpu, i915, nouveau loaded, heres remaining uses of
drm_debug_enabled(), which costs ~1.5kb data to control the
pr_debug("todo:..")s.
Some of those uses might be ok to use __drm_debug_enabled() by
inspection, others might warrant conversion to use dyndbg Factory
macros, and that would want callrate data to estimate the savings
possible. TBH, any remaining savings are probably small; drm.debug
covers the vast bulk of the uses. Maybe "vblank" is the exception.

drm_print defines all of these:
drm_dbg_{core,kms,prime,atomic,vbl,lease,_dp,_drmres}
but not drm_dbg_driver itself, since it was the original drm_dbg.
To improve namespace symmetry, change the drm_dbg defn to
drm_dbg_driver, and redef grandfathered name to symmetric one.
This will help with nouveau, which uses its own stack of macros to
construct calls to dev_info, dev_dbg, etc, for which adaptation means
drm_dbg_##driver constructs.

lkp robot told me:

ISO C99 and later do not support implicit function declarations
[-Wimplicit-function-declaration]
DRM_DEBUG("comm=\"%s\", pid=%d, dev=0x%lx, auth=%d, %s\n",
Since that macro is defined in drm_print.h, and under DRM_USE_DYN*=y
configs, invokes dyndbg-factory macros, include dynamic_debug.h from
there too, so that those configs have the definitions of all the
macros in the callchain.
This is done as a separate patch mostly to see how lkp sorts it.

For CONFIG_DRM_USE_DYNAMIC_DEBUG=y, wrap __drm_dbg() & __drm_dev_dbg()
in one of dyndbg's Factory macros: _dynamic_func_call_no_desc().
This adds the callsite descriptor into the code, and an entry for each
into /proc/dynamic_debug/control.
#> echo class DRM_UT_ATOMIC +p > /proc/dynamic_debug/control
CONFIG_DRM_USE_DYNAMIC_DEBUG=y/n is configurable because of the .data
footprint cost of per-callsite control; 56 bytes/site * ~2k for i915,
~4k callsites for amdgpu. This is large enough that a kernel builder
might not want it.

change drm_dev_dbg & drm_dbg to macros, which forward to the renamed
functions (with __ prefix added).
Those functions sit below the categorized layer of macros implementing
the DRM debug.category API, and implement most of it. These are good
places to insert dynamic-debug jump-label mechanics, which will allow
DRM to avoid the runtime cost of drm_debug_enabled().

Use DECLARE_DYNDBG_CLASSMAP across DRM:
- in .c files, since macro defines/initializes a record
- in drivers, $mod_{drv,drm,param}.c
ie where param setup is done, since a classmap is param related
- in drm/drm_print.c
since existing __drm_debug param is defined there,
and we ifdef it, and provide an elaborated alternative.
- in drm_*_helper modules:
dp/drm_dp - 1st item in makefile target
drivers/gpu/drm/drm_crtc_helper.c - random pick iirc.
Since these modules all use identical CLASSMAP declarations (ie: names
and .class_id's) they will all respond together to "class DRM_UT_*"
query-commands:
:#> echo class DRM_UT_KMS +p > /proc/dynamic_debug/control
NOTES:
This changes __drm_debug from int to ulong, so BIT() is usable on it.
DRM's enum drm_debug_category values need to sync with the index of
their respective class-names here. Then .class_id == category, and
dyndbg's class FOO mechanisms will enable drm_dbg(DRM_UT_KMS, ...).
Though DRM needs consistent categories across all modules, thats not
generally needed; modules X and Y could define FOO differently (ie a
different NAME => class_id mapping), changes are made according to
each module's private class-map.
No callsites are actually selected by this patch, since none are
class'd yet.

enum drm_debug_category has 10 categories, but is initialized with
bitmasks which require 10 bits of underlying storage. By using
natural enumeration, and moving the BIT(cat) into drm_debug_enabled(),
the enum fits in 4 bits, allowing the category to be represented
directly in pr_debug callsites, via the ddebug.class_id field.
While this slightly pessimizes the bit-test in drm_debug_enabled(),
using dyndbg with JUMP_LABEL will avoid the function entirely.
NOTE: this change forecloses the possibility of doing:
drm_dbg(DRM_UT_CORE|DRM_UT_KMS, "weird 2-cat experiment")
but thats already strongly implied by the use of the enum itself; its
not a normal enum if it can be 2 values simultaneously.

Add a simple LRU helper to assist with driver's shrinker implementation.
It handles tracking the number of backing pages associated with a given
LRU, and provides a helper to implement shrinker_scan.
A driver can use multiple LRU instances to track objects in various
states, for example a dontneed LRU for purgeable objects, a willneed LRU
for evictable objects, and an unpinned LRU for objects without backing
pages.
All LRUs that the object can be moved between must share a single lock.

Now that we've finally gotten rid of the non-atomic MST users leftover in
the kernel, we can finally get rid of all of the legacy payload code we
have and move as much as possible into the MST atomic state structs. The
main purpose of this is to make the MST code a lot less confusing to work
on, as there's a lot of duplicated logic that doesn't really need to be
here. As well, this should make introducing features like fallback link
retraining and DSC support far easier.
Since the old payload code was pretty gnarly and there's a Lot of changes
here, I expect this might be a bit difficult to review. So to make things
as easy as possible for reviewers, I'll sum up how both the old and new
code worked here (it took me a while to figure this out too!).
The old MST code basically worked by maintaining two different payload
tables - proposed_vcpis, and payloads. proposed_vcpis would hold the
modified payload we wanted to push to the topology, while payloads held the
payload table that was currently programmed in hardware. Modifications to
proposed_vcpis would be handled through drm_dp_allocate_vcpi(),
drm_dp_mst_deallocate_vcpi(), and drm_dp_mst_reset_vcpi_slots(). Then, they
would be pushed via drm_dp_mst_update_payload_step1() and
drm_dp_mst_update_payload_step2().
Furthermore, it's important to note how adding and removing VC payloads
actually worked with drm_dp_mst_update_payload_step1(). When a VC payload
is removed from the VC table, all VC payloads which come after the removed
VC payload's slots must have their time slots shifted towards the start of
the table. The old code handles this by looping through the entire payload
table and recomputing the start slot for every payload in the topology from
scratch. While very much overkill, this ends up doing the right thing
because we always order the VCPIs for payloads from first to last starting
timeslot.
It's important to also note that drm_dp_mst_update_payload_step2() isn't
actually limited to updating a single payload - the driver can use it to
queue up multiple payload changes so that as many of them can be sent as
possible before waiting for the ACT. This is -technically- not against
spec, but as Wayne Lin has pointed out it's not consistently implemented
correctly in hubs - so it might as well be.
drm_dp_mst_update_payload_step2() is pretty self explanatory and basically
the same between the old and new code, save for the fact we don't have a
second step for deleting payloads anymore -and thus rename it to
drm_dp_mst_add_payload_step2().
The new payload code stores all of the current payload info within the MST
atomic state and computes as much of the state as possible ahead of time.
This has the one exception of the starting timeslots for payloads, which
can't be determined at atomic check time since the starting time slots will
vary depending on what order CRTCs are enabled in the atomic state - which
varies from driver to driver. These are still stored in the atomic MST
state, but are only copied from the old MST state during atomic commit
time. Likewise, this is when new start slots are determined.
Adding/removing payloads now works much more closely to how things are
described in the spec. When we delete a payload, we loop through the
current list of payloads and update the start slots for any payloads whose
time slots came after the payload we just deleted. Determining the starting
time slots for new payloads being added is done by simply keeping track of
where the end of the VC table is in
drm_dp_mst_topology_mgr->next_start_slot. Additionally, it's worth noting
that we no longer have a single update_payload() function. Instead, we now
have drm_dp_mst_add_payload_step1|2() and drm_dp_mst_remove_payload(). As
such, it's now left it up to the driver to figure out when to add or remove
payloads. The driver already knows when it's disabling/enabling CRTCs, so
it also already knows when payloads should be added or removed.
Changes since v1:
* Refactor around all of the completely dead code changes that are
happening in amdgpu for some reason when they really shouldn't even be
there in the first place… :\
* Remove mention of sending one ACT per series of payload updates. As Wayne
Lin pointed out, there are apparently hubs on the market that don't work
correctly with this scheme and require a separate ACT per payload update.
* Fix accidental drop of mst_mgr.lock - Wayne Lin
* Remove mentions of allowing multiple ACT updates per payload change,
mention that this is a result of vendors not consistently supporting this
part of the spec and requiring a unique ACT for each payload change.
* Get rid of reference to drm_dp_mst_port in DC - turns out I just got
myself confused by DC and we don't actually need this.
Changes since v2:
* Get rid of fix for not sending payload deallocations if ddps=0 and just
go back to wayne's fix

Currently, we set drm_dp_atomic_payload->time_slots to 0 in order to
indicate that we're about to delete a payload in the current atomic state.
Since we're going to be dropping all of the legacy code for handling the
payload table however, we need to be able to ensure that we still keep
track of the current time slot allocations for each payload so we can reuse
this info when asking the root MST hub to delete payloads. We'll also be
using it to recalculate the start slots of each VC.
So, let's keep track of the intent of a payload in drm_dp_atomic_payload by
adding ->delete, which we set whenever we're planning on deleting a payload
during the current atomic commit.

There's another kind of situation where we could potentially race with
nonblocking modesets and MST, especially if we were to only use the locking
provided by atomic modesetting:
* Display 1 begins as enabled on DP-1 in SST mode
* Display 1 switches to MST mode, exposes one sink in MST mode
* Userspace does non-blocking modeset to disable the SST display
* Userspace does non-blocking modeset to enable the MST display with a
different CRTC, but the SST display hasn't been fully taken down yet
* Execution order between the last two commits isn't guaranteed since they
share no drm resources
We can fix this however, by ensuring that we always pull in the atomic
topology state whenever a connector capable of driving an MST display
performs its atomic check - and then tracking CRTC commits happening on the
SST connector in the MST topology state. So, let's add some simple helpers
for doing that and hook them up in various drivers.

As Daniel Vetter pointed out, if we only use the atomic modesetting locks
with MST it's technically possible for a driver with non-blocking modesets
to race when it comes to MST displays - as we make the mistake of not doing
our own CRTC commit tracking in the topology_state object.
This could potentially cause problems if something like this happens:
* User starts non-blocking commit to disable CRTC-1 on MST topology 1
* User starts non-blocking commit to enable CRTC-2 on MST topology 1
There's no guarantee here that the commit for disabling CRTC-2 will only
occur after CRTC-1 has finished, since neither commit shares a CRTC - only
the private modesetting object for MST. Keep in mind this likely isn't a
problem for blocking modesets, only non-blocking.
So, begin fixing this by keeping track of which CRTCs on a topology have
changed by keeping track of which CRTCs we release or allocate timeslots
on. As well, add some helpers for:
* Setting up the drm_crtc_commit structs in the ->commit_setup hook
* Waiting for any CRTC dependencies from the previous topology state

VCPI is only sort of the correct term here, originally the majority of this
code simply referred to timeslots vaguely as "slots" - and since I started
working on it and adding atomic functionality, the name "VCPI slots" has
been used to represent time slots.
Now that we actually have consistent access to the DisplayPort spec thanks
to VESA, I now know this isn't actually the proper term - as the
specification refers to these as time slots.
Since we're trying to make this code as easy to figure out as possible,
let's take this opportunity to correct this nomenclature and call them by
their proper name - timeslots. Likewise, we rename various functions
appropriately, along with replacing references in the kernel documentation
and various debugging messages.
It's important to note that this patch series leaves the legacy MST code
untouched for the most part, which is fine since we'll be removing it soon
anyhow. There should be no functional changes in this series.

Only a few more manual modifications were needed, e.g. reverting the
following modifications in some DRM Kconfig files
- select CMA if HAVE_DMA_CONTIGUOUS
+ select DMA if HAVE_DMA_CONTIGUOUS
as well as manually picking the occurrences of 'CMA'/'cma' in comments and
documentation which relate to "GEM CMA", but not "FB CMA".
Also drivers/gpu/drm/Makefile was fixed up manually after renaming
drm_gem_cma_helper.c to drm_gem_dma_helper.c.
This patch is compile-time tested building a x86_64 kernel with
`make allyesconfig && make drivers/gpu/drm`.

Rename "FB CMA" helpers to "FB DMA" helpers - considering the hierarchy
of APIs (mm/cma -> dma -> fb dma) calling them "FB DMA" seems to be
more applicable.
Besides that, commit e57924d4ae ("drm/doc: Task to rename CMA helpers")
requests to rename the CMA helpers and implies that people seem to be
confused about the naming.
In order to do this renaming the following script was used:

Export the individual plane helpers that make up the plane functions and
align the naming with other helpers. The plane helpers are for non-atomic
modesetting and exporting them will simplify a later conversion of drivers
to atomic modesetting.
With struct drm_plane_funcs removed from drm_plane_helper.h, also remove
the include statements. It only needs linux/types.h for uint32_t and a
number of forward declarations.

All implementations return 0 and the return value of mipi_dsi_drv_remove()

So change the prototype of the remove function to return no value. This
way driver authors are not tempted to assume that passing an error to

Add a new function drm_edid_connector_update() to replace the
combination of calls drm_connector_update_edid_property() and
drm_add_edid_modes(). Usually they are called in the drivers in this
order, however the former needs information from the latter.
Since the new drm_edid_read*() functions no longer call the connector
updates directly, and the read and update are separated, we'll need this
new function for the connector update.
This is all in drm_edid.c simply to keep struct drm_edid opaque.

Panel orientation property should be set before drm_dev_register().
Some drm driver calls drm_dev_register() in .bind(). However, most
panels sets orientation property relatively late, mostly in .get_modes()
callback, since this is when they are able to get the connector and
binds the orientation property to it, though the value should be known
when the panel is probed.
In drm_bridge_connector_init(), if a bridge is a panel bridge, use it to
set the connector's panel orientation property.

As talked about in this patch in the kerneldoc of
of_dp_aux_populate_ep_device() and also in the past in commit
a1e3667a98 ("drm/bridge: ti-sn65dsi86: Promote the AUX channel to
its own sub-dev"), it can be difficult for eDP controller drivers to
know when the panel has finished probing when they're using
of_dp_aux_populate_ep_devices().
The ti-sn65dsi86 driver managed to solve this because it was already
broken up into a bunch of sub-drivers. That means we could solve the
problem there by adding a new sub-driver to get the panel. We could
use the traditional -EPROBE_DEFER retry mechansim to handle the case
where the panel hadn't probed yet.
In parade-ps8640 we didn't really solve this. The code just expects
the panel to be ready right away. While reviewing the code originally
I had managed to convince myself it was fine to just expect the panel
right away, but additional testing has shown that not to be the
case. We could fix parade-ps8640 like we did ti-sn65dsi86 but it's
pretty cumbersome (since we're not already broken into multiple
drivers) and requires a bunch of boilerplate code.
After discussion [1] it seems like the best solution for most people
is:
- Accept that there's always at most one device that will probe as a
result of the DP AUX bus (it may have sub-devices, but there will be
one device _directly_ probed).
- When that device finishes probing, we can just have a call back.
This patch implements that idea. We'll now take a callback as an
argument to the populate function. To make this easier to land in
pieces, we'll make wrappers for the old functions. The functions with
the new name (which make it clear that we only have one child) will
take the callback and the functions with the old name will temporarily
wrap.

When building the kernel for arm with the "-mabi=apcs-gnu" option, gcc
will force alignment of all structures and unions to a word boundary
(see also STRUCTURE_SIZE_BOUNDARY and the "-mstructure-size-boundary=XX"
option if you're a gcc person), even when the members of said structures
do not want or need said alignment.
This completely messes up the structure alignment of 'struct edid' on
those targets, because even though all the embedded structures are
marked with "__attribute__((packed))", the unions that contain them are
not.
This was exposed by commit f1e4c916f9 ("drm/edid: add EDID block count
and size helpers"), but the bug is pre-existing. That commit just made
the structure layout problem cause a build failure due to the addition
of the
BUILD_BUG_ON(sizeof(*edid) != EDID_LENGTH);
sanity check in drivers/gpu/drm/drm_edid.c:edid_block_data().
This legacy union alignment should probably not be used in the first
place, but we can fix the layout by adding the packed attribute to the
union entries even when each member is already packed and it shouldn't
matter in a sane build environment.
You can see this issue with a trivial test program:
union {
struct {
char c[5];
};
struct {
char d;
unsigned e;
} __attribute__((packed));
} a = { "1234" };
where building this with a normal "gcc -S" will result in the expected
5-byte size of said union:
.type a, @object
.size a, 5
but with an ARM compiler and the old ABI:
arm-linux-gnu-gcc -mabi=apcs-gnu -mfloat-abi=soft -S t.c
you get
.type a, %object
.size a, 8
instead, because even though each member of the union is packed, the
union itself still gets aligned.

When doing DP AUX transfers there are two actors that need to be
powered in order for the DP AUX transfer to work: the DP source and
the DP sink. Commit bacbab58f0 ("drm: Mention the power state
requirement on side-channel operations") added some documentation
saying that the DP source is required to power itself up (if needed)
to do AUX transfers. However, that commit doesn't talk anything about
the DP sink.
For full fledged DP the sink isn't really a problem. It's expected
that if an external DP monitor isn't plugged in that attempting to do
AUX transfers won't work. It's also expected that if a DP monitor is
plugged in (and thus asserting HPD) then AUX transfers will work.
When we're looking at eDP, however, things are less obvious. Let's add
some documentation about expectations. Here's what we'll say:
1. We don't expect the DP AUX transfer function to power on an eDP
panel. If an eDP panel is physically connected but powered off then it
makes sense for the transfer to fail.
2. We'll document that the official way to power on a panel is via the
bridge chain, specifically by making sure that the panel's prepare
function has been called (which is called by
panel_bridge_pre_enable()). It's already specified in the kernel doc
of drm_panel_prepare() that this is the way to power the panel on and
also that after this call "it is possible to communicate with any
integrated circuitry via a command bus."
3. We'll also document that for code running in the panel driver
itself that it is legal for the panel driver to power itself up
however it wants (it doesn't need to officially call
drm_panel_pre_enable()) and then it can do AUX bus transfers. This is
currently the way that edp-panel works when it's running atop the DP
AUX bus.
NOTE: there was much discussion of all of this in response to v1 [1]
of this patch. A summary of that is:
* With the Intel i195 driver, apparently eDP panels do get powered
up. We won't forbid this but it is expected that code that wants to
run on a variety of platforms should ensure that the drm_panel's
prepare() function has been called.
* There is at least a reasonable amount of agreement that the
transfer() functions itself shouldn't be responsible for powering
the panel. It's proposed that if we need the DP AUX dev nodes to be
robust for eDP that the code handling the DP AUX dev nodes could
handle powering the panel by ensuring that the panel's prepare()
call was made. Potentially drm_dp_aux_dev_get_by_minor() could be a
good place to do this. This is left as a future exercise. Until
that's fixed the DP AUX dev nodes for eDP are probably best just
used for debugging.
* If a panel could be in PSR and DP AUX via the dev node needs to be
reliable then we need to be able to pull the panel out of PSR. On
i915 this is also apparently handled as part of the transfer()
function.

Rename various instances of pagelist to pagereflist. The list now
stores pageref structures, so the new name is more appropriate.
In their write-back helpers, several fbdev drivers refer to the
pageref list in struct fb_deferred_io instead of using the one
supplied as argument to the function. Convert them over to the
supplied one. It's the same instance, so no change of behavior
occurs.

drm_gem_plane_helper_prepare_fb() was using
drm_atomic_set_fence_for_plane() which ignores all implicit fences when an
explicit fence is already set. That's rather unfortunate when the fb still
has a kernel fence we need to wait for to avoid presenting garbage on the
screen.
So instead update the fence in the plane state directly. While at it also
take care of all potential GEM objects and not just the first one.
Also remove the now unused drm_atomic_set_fence_for_plane() function, new
drivers should probably use the atomic helpers directly.

The HDMI helpers were implemented in the EDID and connector code, but

can remove the dependency on drm_edid.{c,h} in some driver's HDMI source

Several of the HDMI helpers remain in EDID code because both share parts
of their implementation internally. With better refractoring of the EDID
code, those HDMI helpers could be moved into the display-helper library
as well.

At least some DELL monitors (P2715Q) with DPCD_REV 1.2 return corrupted
DPCD register values when reading from the 0xF0000- LTTPR range with an
AUX transaction block size bigger than 1. The DP standard requires 0 to
be returned - as for any other reserved/invalid addresses - but these
monitors return the DPCD_REV register value repeated in each byte of the
read buffer. This will in turn corrupt the values returned by the LTTPRs
between the source and the monitor: LTTPRs must adjust the values they
read from the downstream DPRX, for instance right-shift/init the
downstream DP_PHY_REPEATER_CNT value. Since the value returned by the
monitor's DPRX is non-zero the adjusted values will be corrupt.
Reading the LTTPR registers one-by-one instead of reading all of them
with a single AUX transfer works around the issue.
According to the DP standard's 0xF0000 register description:
"LTTPR-related registers at DPCD Addresses F0000h through F02FFh are
valid only for DPCD r1.4 (or higher)." While it's unclear if DPCD r1.4
refers to the DPCD_REV or to the
LT_TUNABLE_PHY_REPEATER_FIELD_DATA_STRUCTURE_REV register (tickets filed
at the VESA site to clarify this haven't been addressed), one
possibility is that it's a restriction due to non-compliant monitors
described above. Disabling the non-transparent LTTPR mode for all such
monitors is not a viable solution: the transparent LTTPR mode has its
own issue causing link training failures and this would affect a lot of
monitors in use with DPCD_REV < 1.4. Instead this patch works around
the problem by reading the LTTPR common and PHY cap registers one-by-one
for any monitor with a DPCD_REV < 1.4.
The standard requires the DPCD capabilities to be read after the LTTPR
common capabilities are read, so re-read the DPCD capabilities after
the LTTPR common and PHY caps were read out.

- Use for instead of a while loop. (Ville)

There is no "reversed" handling in drm_fb_xrgb8888_to_mono_reversed():
the function just converts from color to grayscale, and reduces the
number of grayscale levels from 256 to 2 (i.e. brightness 0-127 is
mapped to 0, 128-255 to 1). All "reversed" handling is done in the
repaper driver, where this function originated.
Hence make this clear by renaming drm_fb_xrgb8888_to_mono_reversed() to
drm_fb_xrgb8888_to_mono(), and documenting the black/white pixel
mapping.

Since a HS transmission is composed of an arbitrary number
of bytes that may not be an integer multiple of lanes, some
lanes may run out of data before others.
(Defined in 6.1.3 of mipi_DSI_specification_v.01-02-00)
However, for some DSI RX devices (for example, anx7625),
there is a limitation that packet number should be the same
on all DSI lanes. In other words, they need to end a HS at
the same time.
Because this limitation is for some specific DSI RX devices,
it is more reasonable to put the enable control in these
DSI RX drivers. If DSI TX driver knows the information,
they can adjust the setting for this situation.

Implemented a function which walk through the order list,
compares the offset and returns the maximum offset block,
this method is unpredictable in obtaining the high range
address blocks which depends on allocation and deallocation.
for instance, if driver requests address at a low specific
range, allocator traverses from the root block and splits
the larger blocks until it reaches the specific block and
in the process of splitting, lower orders in the freelist
are occupied with low range address blocks and for the
subsequent TOPDOWN memory request we may return the low
range blocks. To overcome this issue, we may go with the
below approach.
The other approach, sorting each order list entries in
ascending order and compares the last entry of each
order list in the freelist and return the max block.
This creates sorting overhead on every drm_buddy_free()
request and split up of larger blocks for a single page
request.

i915 driver to drm buddy
v2:
merged below changes to keep the build unbroken
- drm_buddy_alloc_range() becomes obsolete and may be removed
- enable ttm range allocation (fpfn / lpfn) support in i915 driver
- apply enhanced drm_buddy_alloc() function to i915 driver
v3(Matthew Auld):
- Fix alignment issues and remove unnecessary list_empty check
- add more validation checks for input arguments
- make alloc_range() block allocations as bottom-up
- optimize order computation logic
- replace uint64_t with u64, which is preferred in the kernel
v4(Matthew Auld):
- keep drm_buddy_alloc_range() function implementation for generic
actual range allocations
- keep alloc_range() implementation for end bias allocations
v5(Matthew Auld):
- modify drm_buddy_alloc() passing argument place->lpfn to lpfn
as place->lpfn will currently always be zero for i915
v6(Matthew Auld):
- fixup potential uaf - If we are unlucky and can't allocate
enough memory when splitting blocks, where we temporarily
end up with the given block and its buddy on the respective
free list, then we need to ensure we delete both blocks,
and no just the buddy, before potentially freeing them
- fix warnings reported by kernel test robot <lkp@intel.com>
v7(Matthew Auld):
- revert fixup potential uaf
- keep __alloc_range() add node to the list logic same as
drm_buddy_alloc_blocks() by having a temporary list variable
- at drm_buddy_alloc_blocks() keep i915 range_overflows macro
and add a new check for end variable
v8:
- fix warnings reported by kernel test robot <lkp@intel.com>
v9(Matthew Auld):
- remove DRM_BUDDY_RANGE_ALLOCATION flag
- remove unnecessary function description
v10:
- keep DRM_BUDDY_RANGE_ALLOCATION flag as removing the flag
and replacing with (end < size) logic fails amdgpu driver load

Add support to convert from XR24 to reversed monochrome for drivers that
control monochromatic display panels, that only have 1 bit per pixel.
The function does a line-by-line conversion doing an intermediate step
first from XR24 to 8-bit grayscale and then to reversed monochrome.
The drm_fb_gray8_to_mono_reversed_line() helper was based on code from
drivers/gpu/drm/tiny/repaper.c driver.

We'd like panels to be able to add things to debugfs underneath the
connector's directory. Let's plumb it through. A panel will be able to
put things in a "panel" directory under the connector's
directory. Note that debugfs is not ABI and so it's always possible
that the location that the panel gets for its debugfs could change in
the future.
NOTE: this currently only works if you're using a modern
architecture. Specifically the plumbing relies on _both_
drm_bridge_connector and drm_panel_bridge. If you're not using one or
both of these things then things won't be plumbed through.
As a side effect of this change, drm_bridges can also get callbacks to
put stuff underneath the connector's debugfs directory. At the moment
all bridges in the chain have their debugfs_init() called with the
connector's root directory.

set a VMA's vm_ops from the default automatically.

bits, and some of the old ones need to be checked independently. Add

Rename struct dma_buf_map to struct iosys_map and corresponding APIs.
Over time dma-buf-map grew up to more functionality than the one used by
dma-buf: in fact it's just a shim layer to abstract system memory, that
can be accessed via regular load and store, from IO memory that needs to
be acessed via arch helpers.
The idea is to extend this API so it can fulfill other needs, internal
to a single driver. Example: in the i915 driver it's desired to share
the implementation for integrated graphics, which uses mostly system
memory, with discrete graphics, which may need to access IO memory.
The conversion was mostly done with the following semantic patch:
