This patch adds pci_stop_bus_device() which stops a PCI device (detach
the driver, remove from the global list and so on) and any children.
This is needed for ACPI based PCI-to-PCI bridge hot-remove, and it will
be also needed for ACPI based PCI root bridge hot-remove.

There are numerous drivers that can use multithreaded probing but having
some kind of global flag as the way to control this makes migration to
threaded probing hard and since it enables it everywhere and is almost
as likely to cause serious pain as holding a clog dance in a minefield.
If we have a pci_driver multithread_probe flag to inherit you can turn
it on for one driver at a time.
From playing so far however I think we need a different model at the
device layer which serializes until the called probe function says "ok
you can start another one now". That would need some kind of flag and
semaphore plus a helper function.
Anyway in the absence of that this is a starting point to usefully play
with this stuff

Patch 3 implements the core part of PCI-Express AER and aerdrv
port service driver.
When a root port service device is probed, the aerdrv will call
request_irq to register irq handler for AER error interrupt.
When a device sends an PCI-Express error message to the root port,
the root port will trigger an interrupt, by either MSI or IO-APIC,
then kernel would run the irq handler. The handler collects root
error status register and schedules a work. The work will call
the core part to process the error based on its type
(Correctable/non-fatal/fatal).
As for Correctable errors, the patch chooses to just clear the correctable
error status register of the device.
As for the non-fatal error, the patch follows generic PCI error handler
rules to call the error callback functions of the endpoint's driver. If
the device is a bridge, the patch chooses to broadcast the error to
downstream devices.
As for the fatal error, the patch resets the pci-express link and
follows generic PCI error handler rules to call the error callback
functions of the endpoint's driver. If the device is a bridge, the patch
chooses to broadcast the error to downstream devices.

Export the PCI_BUS_FLAGS_NO_MSI flag of a PCI bus in the sysfs files

* disable MSI on a device which has not been blacklisted yet
* allow MSI when some setpci hacks enable MSI support (for instance
on the ServerWorks HT2000 chipset where the MSI HT cap is disabled
by default).
Architecture where some bus have no parent chipset cannot use this
strategy to change MSI support.

Some buggy systems can machine check when config space accesses
happen for some non existent devices. i386/x86-64 do some early
device scans that might trigger this. Allow pci=noearly to disable
this. Also when type 1 is disabling also don't do any early
accesses which are always type1.
This moves the pci= configuration parsing to be a early parameter.
I don't think this can break anything because it only changes
a single global that is only used by PCI.

When changing power states from D0->DX and then from DX->D0, some
Intel PCIE chipsets will cause a device reset to occur. This will
cause problems for any D State other than D3, since any state
information that the driver will expect to be present coming from
a D1 or D2 state will have been cleared. This patch addes a
flag to the pci_dev structure to indicate that devices should
not use states D1 or D2, and will set that flag for the affected
chipsets. This patch also modifies pci_set_power_state() so that
when a device driver tries to set the power state on
a device that is downstream from an affected chipset, or on one
of the affected devices it only allows state changes to or
from D0 & D3. In addition, this patch allows the delay time
between D3->D0 to be changed via a quirk. These chipsets also
need additional time to change states beyond the normal 10ms.

Some VIA southbridges contain a flag in the ACPI register space that
indicates whether an abnormal poweroff has occured, presumably with the
intention that it can be cleared on clean shutdown. Some BIOSes check this
flag at resume time, and will re-POST the system rather than jump back to
the OS if it's set. Clearing it at boot time appears to be sufficient.
I'm not sure if drivers/pci/quirks.c is the right place to do it, but I'm
not sure where would be cleaner.

Prior to 2.6.18rc1 you could install with devices on a JMicron chipset
using the "all-generic-ide" option. As of this kernel the AHCI driver
grabs the controller and rams it into AHCI mode losing the PATA ports
and making CD drives and the like vanish. The all-generic-ide option
fails because the AHCI driver grabbed the PCI device and reconfigured
it.
To fix this three things are needed.
#1 We must put the chip into dual function mode
#2 The AHCI driver must grab only function 0 (already in your rc1 tree)
#3 Something must grab the PATA ports
The attached patch is the minimal risk edition of this. It puts the chip
into dual function mode so that AHCI will grab the SATA ports without
losing the PATA ports. To keep the risk as low as possible the third
patch adds the PCI identifiers for the PATA port and the FN check to the
ide-generic driver. There is a more featured jmicron driver on its way
but that adds risk and the ide-generic support is sufficient to install
and run a system.
The actual chip setup done by the quirk is the precise setup recommended
by the vendor.
(The JMB368 appears only in the ide-generic entry as it has no AHCI so
does not need the quirk)

The pci channel state is currently uninitialized, thus there are two ways
of indicating that "everything's OK": 0 and 1. This is a bit of a burden.
If a devce driver wants to check if the pci channel is in a working or a
disconnected state, the driver writer must perform checks similar to
if((pdev->error_state != 0) &&
(pdev->error_state != pci_channel_io_normal)) {
whatever();
}
which is rather akward. The first check is needed because stuct pci_dev is
inited to all-zeros. The scond is needed because the error recovery will
set the state to pci_channel_io_normal (which is not zero).

This patch-queue improves the generic IRQ layer to be truly generic, by adding
various abstractions and features to it, without impacting existing
functionality.
While the queue can be best described as "fix and improve everything in the
generic IRQ layer that we could think of", and thus it consists of many
smaller features and lots of cleanups, the one feature that stands out most is
the new 'irq chip' abstraction.
The irq-chip abstraction is about describing and coding and IRQ controller
driver by mapping its raw hardware capabilities [and quirks, if needed] in a
straightforward way, without having to think about "IRQ flow"
(level/edge/etc.) type of details.
This stands in contrast with the current 'irq-type' model of genirq
architectures, which 'mixes' raw hardware capabilities with 'flow' details.
The patchset supports both types of irq controller designs at once, and
converts i386 and x86_64 to the new irq-chip design.
As a bonus side-effect of the irq-chip approach, chained interrupt controllers
(master/slave PIC constructs, etc.) are now supported by design as well.
The end result of this patchset intends to be simpler architecture-level code
and more consolidation between architectures.
We reused many bits of code and many concepts from Russell King's ARM IRQ
layer, the merging of which was one of the motivations for this patchset.
This patch:
rename desc->handler to desc->chip.
Originally i did not want to do this, because it's a big patch. But having
both "desc->handler", "desc->handle_irq" and "action->handler" caused a
large degree of confusion and made the code appear alot less clean than it
truly is.
I have also attempted a dual approach as well by introducing a
desc->chip alias - but that just wasnt robust enough and broke
frequently.
So lets get over with this quickly. The conversion was done automatically
via scripts and converts all the code in the kernel.
This renaming patch is the first one amongst the patches, so that the
remaining patches can stay flexible and can be merged and split up
without having some big monolithic patch act as a merge barrier.

This patch adds the 'broken_parity_status' sysfs attribute file to a PCI device.
Reading this attribute a userland program can determine if PCI device provides false
positives (value of 1) in its generation of PCI Parity status, or not (value of 0).
As PCI devices are found to be 'bad' in this regard, userland programs can also set
the appropriate value (root access only) of a faulty device. This per device
information will be used in the EDAC PCI Parity scanner code in a future patch once
this interface becomes available.

pci_walk_bus has a race with pci_destroy_dev. When cb is called

A recent Stratus x86_64 platform uses a system ioapic that is a PCI device
located below a PCI bridge. Other platforms like this may exist.
This patch fixes a problem wherein the kernel's PCI setup code moves
the ioapic to an address other than that assigned by the BIOS. It simply
adds another exclusion (which already includes classless devices and host
bridges) to the function pbus_assign_resources_sorted so that it will not
move the ioapic.
If the ioapic is moved, the fixmap mapping to it is broken, so the OS should
leave it alone.

Brice said the pci_save_msi_state breaks his driver in his special usage
(not in suspend/resume), as pci_save_msi_state will disable msi mode. In
his usage, pci_save_state will be called at runtime, and later (after
the device operates for some time and has an error) pci_restore_state
will be called.
In another hand, suspend/resume needs disable msi mode, as device should
stop working completely. This patch try to workaround this issue.

We recently ran into a problem where the e1000 device failed to
work properly on the kexec kernel. MSI was enabled for the
device in the main kernel when it crashed. The e1000 driver
tried to enable MSI on the kexec kernel, but the code bailed
early when it found that MSI was already enabled in the hardware,
even though the software state was not properly set up in the

correctly from the amd8131 MSI quirk to its parent busses. It makes

Currently, the EDAC (error detection and correction) modules that are in
the kernel contain some features that need to be moved. After some good
feedback on the PCI Parity detection code and interface
(http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0603.1/0897.html) this
patch ADDs an new attribute to the pci_dev structure: Namely the
'broken_parity_status' bit.
When set this indicates that the respective hardware generates false
positives of Parity errors.
The EDAC "blacklist" solution was inferior and will be removed in a
future patch.
Also in this patch is a PCI quirk.c entry for an Infiniband PCI-X card
which generates false positive parity errors.
I am requesting comments on this AND on the possibility of a exposing
this 'broken_parity_status' bit to userland via the PCI device sysfs
directory for devices. This access would allow for enabling of this
feature on new devices and for old devices that have their drivers
updated. (SLES 9 SP3 did this on an ATI motherboard video device). There
is a need to update such a PCI attribute between kernel releases.
This patch just adds a storage place for the attribute and a quirk entry
for a known bad PCI device. PCI Parity reaper/harvestor operations are
in EDAC itself and will be refactored to use this PCI attribute instead
of its own mechanisms (which are currently disabled) in the future.

This patch adds an "enable" sysfs attribute to each PCI device. When read it
shows the "enabled-ness" of the device, but you can write a "0" into it to
disable a device, and a "1" to enable it.
This later is needed for X and other cases where userspace wants to enable
the BARs on a device (typical example: to run the video bios on a secundary
head). Right now X does all this "by hand" via bitbanging, that's just evil.
This allows X to no longer do that but to just let the kernel do this.

PCI: Add pci_assign_resource_fixed -- allow fixed address assignments
On some embedded systems the PCI address for hotplug devices are not only
known a priori but are required to be at a given PCI address for other
master in the system to be able to access.
An example of such a system would be an FPGA which is setup from user space
after the system has booted. The FPGA may be access by DSPs in the system
and those DSPs expect the FPGA at a fixed PCI address.
Added pci_assign_resource_fixed() as a way to allow assignment of the PCI
devices's BARs at fixed PCI addresses.

When we detect a 64-bit pre-set address in a BAR on a 32-bit platform,
we disable it and treat it as if it had been unset, thus allowing the
general address assignment code to assign a new address to it when the
device is enabled. This can happen either if the firmware assigns
64-bit addresses; additionally, some cards have been found "in the
wild" which do not come out of reset with all the BAR registers set to
zero.
Unfortunately, the patch that implemented this tested the low part of
the address instead of the high part of the address. This patch fixes
that.

[pci] Ignore pre-set 64-bit BARs on 32-bit platforms
Currently, Linux always rejects a device which has a pre-set 64-bit
address on a 32-bit platform. On systems which do not do PCI
initialization in firmware, this causes some devices which don't
correctly power up with all BARs zero to fail.
This patch makes the kernel automatically zero out such an address
(thus treating it as if it had not been set at all, meaning it will
assign an address if necessary).
I have done this only for devices, not bridges. It seems potentially
hazardous to do for bridges.

For example ICH7:

11.1.3: PCICMD (USB): The base address register for USB should be

The OSC set and query functions do not allocate enough space for return
values, and set the output buffer length to a false, too large value. This
causes the acpi-ca code to assume that the output buffer is larger than it
actually is, and overwrite memory when copying acpi return buffers into
this caller provided buffer. In some cases this can cause kernel oops if
the memory that is overwritten is a pointer. This patch will change these

An earlier commit (75cf7456dd) changed an
overly-zealous PCI quirk to only poke those VIA devices that need it.
However, some PCI devices were not included in what I hope is now the full
list. Consequently we're failing to run the quirk on all machines which need
it, causing IRQ routing failures.
This should I hope correct this.

The init function for the RPA PCI Hotplug driver returns -ENODEV in the
case that no hotplug-capable slots are detected in the system. This is
bad, since hot-capable slots can be added after boot to a purely virtual
POWER partition. This is also bad because DLPAR I/O operations depend
on the rpaphp module.
Change the rpaphp init module to return success for the case of
partitions that own no hotplug-capable slots at boot. Such slots can be
dynamically added after boot.

There 1022:7450 is listed as "AMD-8131 PCI-X Bridge" while 1022:7451

0x7450 is PCI_DEVICE_ID_AMD_8131_APIC. It seems to me like that name

These patches add generic dock event handling to acpiphp. If there are
pci devices that need to be inserted/removed after the dock event, the
event notification will be handed down to the normal pci hotplug event
handler in acpiphp so that new bridges/devices can be enumerated.
Because some dock stations do not have pci bridges or pci devices that
need to be inserted after a dock, acpiphp will remain loaded to handle
dock events even if no hotpluggable pci slots are discovered.
You probably need to have the pci=assign-busses kernel parameter enabled
to use these patches, and you may not allow ibm_acpi to handle docking
notifications and use this patch.

"In some cases, especially on modern laptops with a lot of PCI and cardbus
bridges, we're unable to assign correct secondary/subordinate bus numbers
to all cardbus bridges due to BIOS limitations unless we are using
"pci=assign-busses" boot option." -- Ivan Kokshaysky (from a patch comment)
Without it, Cardbus cards inserted are never seen by PCI because the parent
PCI-PCI Bridge of the Cardbus bridge will not pass and translate Type 1 PCI
configuration cycles correctly and the system will fail to find and
initialise the PCI devices in the system.
Reference: PCI-PCI Bridges: PCI Configuration Cycles and PCI Bus Numbering:
http://www.science.unitn.it/~fiorella/guidelinux/tlk/node72.html
The reason for this is that:
``All PCI busses located behind a PCI-PCI bridge must reside between the
secondary bus number and the subordinate bus number (inclusive).''
"pci=assign-busses" makes pcibios_assign_all_busses return 1 and this
turns on PCI renumbering during PCI probing.
Alan suggested to use DMI automatically set assign-busses on problem systems.
The only question for me was where to put it. I put it directly before
scanning PCI bus into pcibios_scan_root() because it's called from legacy,
acpi and numa and so it can be one place for all systems and configurations
which may need it.
AMD64 Laptops are also affected and fixed by assign-busses, and the code is
also incuded from arch/x86_64/pci/ that place will also work for x86_64
kernels, I only ifdef'-ed the x86-only Laptop in this example.
Affected and known or assumed to be fixed with it are (found by googling):
* ASUS Z71V and L3s
* Samsung X20
* Compaq R3140us and all Compaq R3000 series laptops with TI1620 Controller,
also Compaq R4000 series (from a kernel.org bugreport)
* HP zv5000z (AMD64 3700+, known that fixup_parent_subordinate_busnr fixes it)
* HP zv5200z
* IBM ThinkPad 240
* An IBM ThinkPad (1.8 GHz Pentium M) debugged by Pavel Machek
gives the correspondig message which detects the possible problem.
* MSI S260 / Medion SIM 2100 MD 95600

Symptom will either be memory corruption or MCA.
Second part of this patch deals with "useless" code.

Current SHPCHP driver doesn't care about the confliction between
hotplug operation via sysfs and hotplug operation via attention
button. So if those ware conflicted, slot could be an unexpected
state.
This patch changes SHPCHP driver to handle slot state properly. With
this patch, slot events are handled according to the current slot
state as shown at the Table below.
Table. Slot States and Event Handling
=========================================================================
Slot State Event and Action
=========================================================================
STATIC - Go to POWERON state if user initiates
(Slot enabled, insertion request via sysfs
Slot disabled) - Go to POWEROFF state if user initiates removal
request via sysfs
- Go to BLINKINGON state if user presses
attention button when the slot is disabled
- Go to BLINKINGOFF state if user presses
attention button when the slot is enabled
The event handler of SHPCHP driver is unnecessarily very complex. In
addition, current event handler can only a fixed number of events at
the same time, and some of events would be lost if several number of
events happened at the same time.
This patch simplify the event handler by using 'work queue', and it

Agreed, looks like an accident. The patch [1] originally came from Kip
Walker (Broadcom back then) between 2.6.0-test3 and 2.6.0-test4. As I
recall it was supposed to fix an issue with with PCI aborts being
signalled by the PCI bridge of the Broadcom BCM1250 family of SOCs when
probing behind pci_scan_bridge. It is undeseriable to disable
PCI_BRIDGE_CTL_MASTER_ABORT in pci_{read,write)_config_* and the
behaviour wasn't considered a bug in need of a workaround, so this was
put in probe.c.
I don't have an affected system at hand, so can't really test but I
propose something like the below patch.
[1] http://www.linux-mips.org/git?p=linux.git;a=commit;h=599457e0cb702a31a3247ea6a5d9c6c99c4cf195

Removing and then adding a PCI slot to a running partition results in
a kernel panic. The current code attempts to add iospace for an entire
root bus, which is inappropriate, and silently fails. When a pci device
tries to use the iospace, a page fault is taken, as the iospace had not
been mapped, and of course the page fault cannot be resolved.
This only occurs for PCI adapters using pio, which may be why it hadn't
been seen earlier (this seems to have been broken for a while).

Combined mode sucks. Especially when both libata and the legacy IDE
drivers try to drive ports on the same device, since that makes DMA
rather difficult.
This patch addresses the problem by allowing the user to control which
driver binds to the ports in a combined mode configuration. In many
cases, they'll probably want the libata driver to control both ports
since it can use DMA for talking with ATAPI devices (when
libata.atapi_enabled=1 of course). It also allows the user to get old
school behavior by letting the legacy IDE driver bind to both ports.
But neither is forced, the patch doesn't change current behavior unless
one of combined_mode=ide or combined_mode=libata is passed
on the boot line. Either of those options may require you to access
your devices via different device nodes (/dev/hd* in the ide case
and /dev/sd* in the libata case), though of course if you have udev
installed nicely you may not notice anything. :)
Let me know if the documentation is too cryptic, I'd be happy to expand
on it if necessary. I think most users will want to boot with
'combined_mode=libata' and add 'options libata atapi_enabled=1'
to their modules.conf to get good DVD playing and disk behavior
(haven't tested CD or DVD writing though).
I'd much rather things behave sanely by default (i.e. DMA for devices on
both ports), but apparently that's difficult given the various chip
bugs and hardware configs out there (not to mention that people's
drives may suddenly change from /dev/hdc to /dev/sdb), so this boot
option may be the correct long term fix.

MSI hardcoded delivery mode to use logical delivery mode. Recently
x86_64 moved to use physical mode addressing to support physflat mode.
With this mode enabled noticed that my eth with MSI werent working.
msi_address_init() was hardcoded to use logical mode for i386 and x86_64.
So when we switch to use physical mode, things stopped working.
Since anyway we dont use lowest priority delivery with MSI, its always
directed to just a single CPU. Its safe and simpler to use
physical mode always, even when we use logical delivery mode for IPI's
or other ioapic RTE's.

This patch further tweaks how we request control of hotplug
controller hardware from BIOS. We first search the ACPI namespace
corresponding to a specific hotplug controller looking for an
_OSC or OSHP method. On failure, we successively move to the
ACPI parent object, till we hit the highest level host bridge
in the hierarchy. This allows for different types of BIOS's
which place the _OSC/OSHP methods at various places in the acpi
namespace, while still not encroaching on the namespace of
some other root level host bridge.
This patch also introduces a new load time option (pciehp_force)
that allows us to bypass all _OSC/OSHP checking. Not supporting
these methods seems to be be the most common ACPI firmware problem
we've run into. This will still _not_ allow the pciehp driver to
work correctly if the BIOS really doesn't support pciehp (i.e. if
it doesn't generate a hotplug interrupt). Use this option with
caution. Some BIOS's may deliberately not build any _OSC/OSHP
methods to make sure it retains control the hotplug hardware.
Using the pciehp_force parameter for such systems can lead to
two separate entities trying to control the same hardware.

This patch tweaks the way pciehp requests control of the hotplug
hardware from BIOS. It now tries to invoke the ACPI _OSC method
for a specific hotplug controller only, rather than walking the
entire acpi namespace invoking all possible _OSC methods under
all host bridges. This allows us to gain control of each hotplug
controller individually, even if BIOS fails to give us control of
some other hotplug controller in the system.

State information is currently stored in per-slot as well as

Reduce the PCI Express hotplug driver's dependence on ACPI.
We don't walk the acpi namespace anymore to build a list of
bridges and devices. We go to ACPI only to run the _OSC or
_OSHP methods to transition control of hotplug hardware from
system BIOS to the hotplug driver, and to run the _HPP
method to get hotplug device parameters like cache line size,
latency timer and SERR/PERR enable from BIOS.
Note that one of the side effects of this patch is that pciehp
does not automatically enable the hot-added device or its DMA
bus mastering capability now. It expects the device driver to
do that. This may break some drivers and we will have to fix
them as they are reported.

Some devices have more than one capability of the same type. For
example, the PCI header for the PathScale InfiniPath looks like:
04:01.0 InfiniBand: Unknown device 1fc1:000d (rev 02)
Subsystem: Unknown device 1fc1:000d
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 193
Memory at fea00000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=2M]
Capabilities: [c0] HyperTransport: Slave or Primary Interface
Capabilities: [f8] HyperTransport: Interrupt Discovery and Configuration
There are _two_ HyperTransport capabilities, and the PathScale driver
wants to look at both of them.
The current pci_find_capability() API doesn't work for this, since it
only allows us to get to the first capability of a given type. The
patch below introduces a new pci_find_next_capability(), which can be
used in a loop like
for (pos = pci_find_capability(pdev, <ID>);
pos;
pos = pci_find_next_capability(pdev, pos, <ID>)) {
/* ... */

I recently picked up my older work to remove unnecessary #includes of
sched.h, starting from a patch by Dave Jones to not include sched.h
from module.h. This reduces the number of indirect includes of sched.h
by ~300. Another ~400 pointless direct includes can be removed after
this disentangling (patch to follow later).
However, quite a few indirect includes need to be fixed up for this.
In order to feed the patches through -mm with as little disturbance as
possible, I've split out the fixes I accumulated up to now (complete for
i386 and x86_64, more archs to follow later) and post them before the real
patch. This way this large part of the patch is kept simple with only
adding #includes, and all hunks are independent of each other. So if any
hunk rejects or gets in the way of other patches, just drop it. My scripts
will pick it up again in the next round.

Some PCI adapters (eg. ipr scsi adapters) have an exposure today in that they
issue BIST to the adapter to reset the card. If, during the time it takes to
complete BIST, userspace attempts to access PCI config space, the host bus
bridge will master abort the access since the ipr adapter does not respond on
the PCI bus for a brief period of time when running BIST. On PPC64 hardware,
this master abort results in the host PCI bridge isolating that PCI device
from the rest of the system, making the device unusable until Linux is
rebooted. This patch is an attempt to close that exposure by introducing some
blocking code in the PCI code. When blocked, writes will be humored and reads
will return the cached value. Ben Herrenschmidt has also mentioned that he
plans to use this in PPC power management.

pci_fixup_parent_subordinate_busnr().
The patch here does two things:
- hunk #1 should fix the problems you've seen when you boot without

- hunk #2 supposedly fixes boot with "pci=assign-busses" option which
otherwise hangs Acer TM81xx machines as reported.
Please try this with and without "pci=assign-busses". If it boots,

This function expects an unsigned 32-bit type as its third argument:
static u32 pci_size(u32 base, u32 maxbase, u32 mask)
However, given these definitions:
#define PCI_BASE_ADDRESS_MEM_MASK (~0x0fUL)
#define PCI_ROM_ADDRESS_MASK (~0x7ffUL)
these two calls in drivers/pci/probe.c are problematic for architectures
for which a UL is not equivalent to a u32:
sz = pci_size(l, sz, PCI_BASE_ADDRESS_MEM_MASK);
sz = pci_size(l, sz, PCI_ROM_ADDRESS_MASK);
Hence the below compile warning when building for ARCH=ppc64:

This patch pulls the PCI-related junk out of struct device_node and
puts it in a separate structure, struct pci_dn. The device_node now
just has a void * pointer in it, which points to a struct pci_dn for
nodes that represent PCI devices. It could potentially be used in
future for device-specific data for other sorts of devices, such as
virtual I/O devices.

The PCI error recovery infrastructure needs to be able to contact all
the drivers affected by a PCI error event, which may mean traversing
all the devices under a given PCI-PCI bridge. This patch adds a
function to the PCI core that traverses all the PCI devices on a PCI
bus and under any PCI-PCI bridges on that bus (and so on), calling a
given function for each device. This provides a way for the error
recovery code to iterate through all devices that are affected by an
error event.
This version is not implemented as a recursive function. Instead,
when we reach a PCI-PCI bridge, we set the pointers to start doing the
devices on the bus under the bridge, and when we reach the end of a
bus's devices, we use the bus->self pointer to go back up to the next
higher bus and continue doing its devices.

There were three changes necessary in order to allow
sparc64 to use setup-res.c:
1) Sparc64 roots the PCI I/O and MEM address space using
parent resources contained in the PCI controller structure.
I'm actually surprised no other platforms do this, especially
ones like Alpha and PPC{,64}. These resources get linked into the
iomem/ioport tree when PCI controllers are probed.
So the hierarchy looks like this:
iomem --|
PCI controller 1 MEM space --|
device 1
device 2
etc.
PCI controller 2 MEM space --|
...
ioport --|
PCI controller 1 IO space --|
...
PCI controller 2 IO space --|
...
You get the idea. The drivers/pci/setup-res.c code allocates
using plain iomem_space and ioport_space as the root, so that
wouldn't work with the above setup.
So I added a pcibios_select_root() that is used to handle this.
It uses the PCI controller struct's io_space and mem_space on
sparc64, and io{port,mem}_resource on every other platform to
keep current behavior.
2) quirk_io_region() is buggy. It takes in raw BUS view addresses
and tries to use them as a PCI resource.
pci_claim_resource() expects the resource to be fully formed when
it gets called. The sparc64 implementation would do the translation
but that's absolutely wrong, because if the same resource gets
released then re-claimed we'll adjust things twice.
So I fixed up quirk_io_region() to do the proper pcibios_bus_to_resource()
conversion before passing it on to pci_claim_resource().
3) I was mistakedly __init'ing the function methods the PCI controller
drivers provide on sparc64 to implement some parts of these
routines. This was, of course, easy to fix.
So we end up with the following, and that nasty SPARC64 makefile
ifdef in drivers/pci/Makefile is finally zapped.

Some PCI devices (e.g. 3c905B, 3c556B) lose all configuration
(including BARs) when transitioning from D3hot->D0. This leaves such
a device in an inaccessible state. The patch below causes the BARs
to be restored when enabling such a device, so that its driver will
be able to access it.
The patch also adds pci_restore_bars as a new global symbol, and adds a
correpsonding EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL for that.
Some firmware (e.g. Thinkpad T21) leaves devices in D3hot after a
(re)boot. Most drivers call pci_enable_device very early, so devices
left in D3hot that lose configuration during the D3hot->D0 transition
will be inaccessible to their drivers.
Drivers could be modified to account for this, but it would
be difficult to know which drivers need modification. This is
especially true since often many devices are covered by the same
driver. It likely would be necessary to replicate code across dozens
of drivers.
The patch below should trigger only when transitioning from D3hot->D0
(or at boot), and only for devices that have the "no soft reset" bit
cleared in the PM control register. I believe it is safe to include
this patch as part of the PCI infrastructure.
The cleanest implementation of pci_restore_bars was to call
pci_update_resource. Unfortunately, that does not currently exist
for the sparc64 architecture. The patch below includes a null
implemenation of pci_update_resource for sparc64.
Some have expressed interest in making general use of the the
pci_restore_bars function, so that has been exported to GPL licensed
modules.

Currently rpaphp registers the following bus types as hotplug slots:
1) Actual PCI Hotplug slots
2) Embedded/Internal PCI slots
3) PCI Host Bridges
The second and third bus types are not actually direct parents of
removable adapters. As such, the rpaphp has special case code to fake
results for attributes like power, adapter status, etc. This patch

The slot structure in the rpaphp module currently references the PCI
contents of the slot using the PCI device of the parent bridge. This
is unnecessary, since the module is actually interested in the
subordinate bus of the bridge. The dependency on a PCI bridge device
also prohibits the module from registering hotplug slots that have a
root bridge as a parent, since root bridges on PPC64 don't have PCI
devices.

Currently, rpaphp registers Virtual I/O slots as hotplug slots. The
only purpose of this registration is to ensure that the VIO subsystem
is notified of new VIO buses during DLPAR adds. Similarly, rpaphp
notifies the VIO subsystem when a VIO bus is DLPAR-removed. The rpaphp
module has special case code to fake results for attributes like power,
adapter status, etc.
The VIO register/unregister functions could just as easily be made from
the DLPAR module. This patch moves the VIO registration calls to the
DLPAR module, and removes the VIO fluff from rpaphp altogether.

When handling writes to /proc/irq, current code is re-programming rte
entries directly. This is not recommended and could potentially cause
chipset's to lockup, or cause missing interrupts.
CONFIG_IRQ_BALANCE does this correctly, where it re-programs only when the
interrupt is pending. The same needs to be done for /proc/irq handling as well.
Otherwise user space irq balancers are really not doing the right thing.
- Changed pending_irq_balance_cpumask to pending_irq_migrate_cpumask for
lack of a generic name.
- added move_irq out of IRQ_BALANCE, and added this same to X86_64
- Added new proc handler for write, so we can do deferred write at irq
handling time.
- Display of /proc/irq/XX/smp_affinity used to display CPU_MASKALL, instead
it now shows only active cpu masks, or exactly what was set.
- Provided a common move_irq implementation, instead of duplicating
when using generic irq framework.

Tested UP builds as well.

I had some time to think about PCI assign issues in 2.6.13-rc series.
The major problem here is that we call pci_assign_unassigned_resources()
way too early - at subsys_initcall level. Therefore we give no chances
to ACPI and PnP routines (called at fs_initcall level) to reserve their
respective resources properly, as the comments in drivers/pnp/system.c
and drivers/acpi/motherboard.c suggest:
/**
* Reserve motherboard resources after PCI claim BARs,
* but before PCI assign resources for uninitialized PCI devices
*/
So I moved the pci_assign_unassigned_resources() call to
pcibios_assign_resources() (fs_initcall), which should hopefully fix a
lot of problems and make PCIBIOS_MIN_IO tweaks unnecessary.
Other changes:
- remove resource assignment code from pcibios_assign_resources(), since
it duplicates pci_assign_unassigned_resources() functionality and
actually does nothing in 2.6.13;
- modify ROM assignment code as per Ben's suggestion: try to use firmware
settings by default (if PCI_ASSIGN_ROMS is not set);
- set CARDBUS_IO_SIZE back to 4K as it's a wonderful stress test for
various setups.
Confirmed by Tero Roponen <teanropo@cc.jyu.fi> (who had problems with
the 4kB CardBus IO size previously).

For 64-bit BAR[i] only pci_dev->resource[i] is valid, ->resource[i+1]
slot is unused and contains zeroes in all fields.
So when we update a PCI BAR, all we need is just to check that we're
going to update a _valid_ resource.
Also make sure to write high bits - use "x >> 16 >> 16" (rather than the
simpler ">> 32") to avoid warnings on 32-bit architectures where we're
not going to have any high bits.

The reason we have PCIBIOS_MIN_IO and PCIBIOS_MIN_CARDBUS_IO is because
we want to protect badly documented motherboard PCI resources and thus
don't want to allocate new resources in low IO/MEM space.
However, if we have already discovered a PCI bridge with a specified
resource base, that should override that decision.
This change will allow us to move the "careful" region upwards without
resulting in problems allocating resources in low mappings. This was
brought on by us having allocated a bus resource at 0x1000, conflicting
with a undocumented VAIO Sony PI resources.
The setup-bus code doesn't work correctly for configurations
with more than one display adapter in the same PCI domain.
This stuff actually is a leftover of an early 2.4 PCI setup code
and apparently it stopped working after some "bridge_ctl" changes.
So the best thing we can do is just to remove it and rely on the fact
that any firmware *has* to configure VGA port forwarding for the boot
display device properly.
But then we need to ensure that the bus->bridge_ctl will always
contain valid information collected at the probe time, therefore
the following change in pci_scan_bridge() is needed.

There is a slight disagreement between setup-bus.c code and traditional
x86 PCI setup wrt which recourses are invalid vs resources that are free
for further allocations.
In particular, in the setup-bus.c, if we failed to allocate some resource,
we nullify "start" and "flags" fields, but *not* the "end" one.
But x86 pcibios_enable_resources() does the following check:
if (!r->start && r->end) {
printk(KERN_ERR "PCI: Device %s not available because of resource collisions\n", pci_name(dev));
return -EINVAL;
which means that the device owning the offending resource cannot be
enabled.
In particular, this breaks cardbus behind the normal decode p2p bridge -
the cardbus code from setup-bus.c requests rather large IO and MEM
windows, and if it fails, the socket is completely unavailable. Which
is wrong, as the yenta code is capable to allocate smaller windows.

With the number of PCI bus resources increased to 8, we can
handle the subtractive decode PCI-PCI bridge like a normal
bridge, taking into account standard PCI-PCI bridge windows
(resources 0-2). This helps to avoid problems with peer-to-peer DMA
behind such bridges, poor performance for MMIO ranges outside bridge
windows and prefetchable vs. non-prefetchable memory issues.
To reflect the fact that such bridges do forward all addresses to
the secondary bus (transparency), remaining bus resources 3-7 are
linked to resources 0-4 of the primary bus. These resources will be
used as fallback by resource management code if allocation from
standard bridge windows fails for some reason.

It fixes the patch to work on PPC iSeries, removes some debug printks
at Ben's request, and incorporates your
fix-pci-mmap-on-ppc-and-ppc64-fix.patch also.
Originally from Benjamin Herrenschmidt <benh@kernel.crashing.org>
This patch was discussed at length on linux-pci and so far, the last
iteration of it didn't raise any comment. It's effect is a nop on
architecture that don't define the new pci_resource_to_user() callback
anyway. It allows architecture like ppc who put weird things inside of
PCI resource structures to convert to some different value for user
visible ones. It also fixes mmap'ing of IO space on those archs.

This patch adds PCI based I/O xAPIC hot-add support to ACPIPHP
driver. When PCI root bridge is hot-added, all PCI based I/O xAPICs
under the root bridge are hot-added by this patch. Hot-remove support
is TBD.

Current acpiphp code does not distinguish between the physical presence and
power state of a device/slot. That is, if a device has to be disabled, it
also tries to physically ejects the device. This patch decouples power state
from physical presence. You can now echo to the corresponding sysfs power
control file to repeatedly enable and disable a device without having to
physically re-insert it.

A root bridge may not have directly attached hotpluggable slots under it.
Instead, it may have p2p bridges with slots under it. In this case, we need
to clean up the p2p bridges and slots properly too. Patch below applies on
top of the original patch, and fixes this problem. Without this, acpiphp
leaves behind notify handlers on module unload, and subsequent module load
attempts don't work properly too. Patch was tested on an ia64 Tiger4 box.

This patch converts acpiphp to use the generic PCI resource assignment code.
It's quite large, but most of it is deleting the acpiphp_pci and acpiphp_res
files. It's tested on an hp Integrity rx8620 (which won't work without this
patch). Testers with other hardware welcomed.

When hot-plugging an I/O hierarchy that contains many bridges and leaf
devices, it's possible that there are not enough resources to start all the
device present. If we fail to assign a resource, clear the corresponding
value in the pci_dev structure, so other code can take corrective action.

When a root bridge hierarchy is hot-plugged, resource requirements for the new
devices may be greater than what the root bridge is decoding. In this case,
we want to remove devices that did not get needed resources. These devices
have been scanned into bus specific lists but not yet added to the global
device list. Make sure the pci remove functions can handle this case.

When a pci child bus is created, add it to the parent's children list
immediately rather than waiting till pci_bus_add_devices(). For hot-plug
bridges/devices, pci_bus_add_devices() may be called much later, after they
have been properly configured. In the meantime, this allows us to use the
normal pci bus search functions for the hot-plug bridges/buses.

When you hot-plug a (root) bridge hierarchy, it may have p2p bridges and
devices attached to it that have not been configured by firmware. In this
case, we need to configure the devices before starting them. This patch
separates device start from device scan so that we can introduce the
configuration step in the middle.
I kept the existing semantics for pci_scan_bus() since there are a huge number
of callers to that function.
Also, I have no way of testing the changes I made to the parisc files, so this
needs review by those folks. Sorry for the massive cross-post, this touches

Thanks for making the changes. However, changes in functions:
void pcie_port_device_remove(struct pci_dev *dev) and
static int remove_iter(struct device *dev, void *data)
are not correct. Please use the patch, which is based on kernel

On 64-bit machines, PCI_BASE_ADDRESS_MEM_MASK and other mask constants
passed to pci_size() are 64-bit (for example ~0x0fUL). However, pci_size
does comparisons between the u32 arguments and the mask, which will fail
even though any result from pci_size is still just 32-bit.
Changing the mask argument to u32 seems the obvious thing to do, since all
arithmetic in the function is 32-bit and having a larger mask makes no
sense.
This triggered on a PPC64 system here where an adapter (VGA, as it
happened) had a memory region base of 0xfe000000 and a sz of the same,
matching the if (max == maxbase ...) test at the bottom of pci_size but
failing the mask comparison. Quite a corner case which I guess explains
why we haven't seen it until now.

MSI functionality is broken on the GC_LE x86 chipset that Serverworks
developed and that is being used in various platforms today. Broadcom is
going to push out to the kernel MSI enabled Gigabit drivers (in the very
near future), and we would like to make sure that MSI does not get
enabled on any platforms using the GC_LE chipset (device id 0x17).
Following the AMD 8131 example, I am including a patch to disable MSI
functionality when a GCNB_LE is detected. Please let me know if there
are any issues with this. This is a permanent fix for this chipset, as

Here is my third attempt at a patch to further update the CompactPCI
hotplug driver infrastructure to address the pci_enable_device issue
discussed on the list as well as a few other issues I discovered during
some more testing. This version addresses a few more issues pointed out
by Prarit Bhargava. Changes include:
- cpci_enable_device and its recursive calling of pci_enable_device on
new devices removed.
- Use list_rwsem to avoid slot status change races between disable_slot
and check_slots.
- Fixed oopsing in cpci_hp_unregister_bus caused by calling list_del on
a slot after calling pci_hp_deregister.
- Removed kfree calls in cleanup_slots since release_slot will have
done it already.
- Reworked init_slots a bit to fix latch and adapter file updating on
subsequent calls to cpci_hp_start.
- Improved sanity checking in cpci_hp_register_controller.
- Now shut things down correctly in cpci_hotplug_exit.
- Switch to pci_get_slot instead of deprecated pci_find_slot.
- A bunch of CodingStyle fixes.

[PATCH] CPCI: update
I have finally done some work to update the CompactPCI hotplug driver to
fix some of the outstanding issues in 2.6:
- Added adapter and latch status ops so that those files will get created
by the current PCI hotplug core. This used to not be required, but
seems to be now after some of the sysfs rework in the core.
- Replaced slot list spinlock with a r/w semaphore to avoid any potential
issues with sleeping. This quiets all of the runtime warnings.
- Reworked interrupt driven hot extraction handling to remove need for a
polling operator for ENUM# status. There are a lot of boards that only
have an interrupt driven by ENUM#, so this lowers the bar to entry.
- Replaced pci_visit_dev usage with better use of the PCI core functions.
The new code is functionally equivalent to the previous code, but the
use of pci_enable_device on insert needs to be investigated further, as
I need to do some more testing to see if it is still necessary.

Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history,
even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git
archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about
3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early
git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good
infrastructure for it.
Let it rip!
