6ade6c6460 perf script: Show branch speculation info
Show the branch speculation info if provided by the branch recording
hardware feature. This can be useful for optimizing code further.

The speculation info is appended to the end of the list of fields so any
existing tools that use "/" as a delimiter for access fields via an index
remain unaffected. Also show "-" instead of "N/A" when speculation info
is unavailable because "/" is used as the field separator.

E.g.

  $ perf record -j any,u,save_type ./test_branch
  $ perf script --fields brstacksym

Before:

  [...]
  check_match+0x60/strcmp+0x0/P/-/-/0/CALL
  do_lookup_x+0x3c5/check_match+0x0/P/-/-/0/CALL
  [...]

After:

  [...]
  check_match+0x60/strcmp+0x0/P/-/-/0/CALL/NON_SPEC_CORRECT_PATH
  do_lookup_x+0x3c5/check_match+0x0/P/-/-/0/CALL/NON_SPEC_CORRECT_PATH
  [...]

The bitfield swapping scheme used duing sample parsing has changed
because of the addition of new branch flags, namely "spec", "new_type"
and "priv". Earlier, these were all part of the "reserved" field but
now, each of these fields get swapped separately. Change the expected
flag values accordingly for the test to pass.

E.g.

  $ perf test -v 27

Before:

   27: Sample parsing :
  --- start ---
  test child forked, pid 61979
  parsing failed for sample_type 0x800
  test child finished with -1
  ---- end ----
  Sample parsing: FAILED!

After:

   27: Sample parsing :
  --- start ---
  test child forked, pid 63293
  test child finished with 0
  ---- end ----
  Sample parsing: Ok

20ed9fa496 perf branch: Fix interpretation of branch records
Commit 93315e46b0 ("perf/core: Add speculation info to branch
entries") added a new field in between type and new_type. Perf has its
own copy of this struct so update it to match the kernel side.

This doesn't currently cause any issues because new_type is only used by
the Arm BRBE driver which isn't merged yet.

Committer notes:

Is this really an ABI? How are we supposed to deal with old perf.data
files with new tools and vice versa? :-\

ffe7428e6d perf branch: Replace zero-length array with flexible-array
The current codebase makes use of the zero-length array language
extension to the C90 standard, but the preferred mechanism to declare
variable-length types such as these ones is a flexible array
member[1][2], introduced in C99:

struct foo {
        int stuff;
        struct boo array[];
};

By making use of the mechanism above, we will get a compiler warning in
case the flexible array does not occur last in the structure, which will
help us prevent some kind of undefined behavior bugs from being
inadvertently introduced[3] to the codebase from now on.

Also, notice that, dynamic memory allocations won't be affected by this
change:

"Flexible array members have incomplete type, and so the sizeof operator
may not be applied. As a quirk of the original implementation of
zero-length arrays, sizeof evaluates to zero."[1]

sizeof(flexible-array-member) triggers a warning because flexible array
members have incomplete type[1]. There are some instances of code in
which the sizeof operator is being incorrectly/erroneously applied to
zero-length arrays and the result is zero. Such instances may be hiding
some bugs. So, this work (flexible-array member conversions) will also
help to get completely rid of those sorts of issues.

This issue was found with the help of Coccinelle and audited _manually_.

For a call stack which is deeper than LBR limit, HW will overwrite the
LBR register with oldest branch. Only partial call stacks can be
reconstructed.

However, the overwritten LBRs may still be retrieved from previous
sample. At that moment, HW hasn't overwritten the LBR registers yet.
Perf tools can stitch those overwritten LBRs on current call stacks to
get a more complete call stack.

To determine if LBRs can be stitched, perf tools need to compare current
sample with previous sample.

- They should have identical LBR records (Same from, to and flags
values, and the same physical index of LBR registers).

- The searching starts from the base-of-stack of current sample.

Once perf determines to stitch the previous LBRs, the corresponding LBR
cursor nodes will be copied to 'lists'. The 'lists' is to track the LBR
cursor nodes which are going to be stitched.

When the stitching is over, the nodes will not be freed immediately.
They will be moved to 'free_lists'. Next stitching may reuse the space.
Both 'lists' and 'free_lists' will be freed when all samples are
processed.

Committer notes:

Fix the intel-pt.c initialization of the union with 'struct
branch_flags', that breaks the build with its unnamed union on older gcc
versions.

Uninline thread__free_stitch_list(), as it grew big and started dragging
includes to thread.h, so move it to thread.c where what it needs in
terms of headers are already there.

This fixes the build in several systems such as debian:experimental when
cross building to the MIPS32 architecture, i.e. in the other cases what
was needed was being included by sheer luck.

42bbabed09 perf tools: Add hw_idx in struct branch_stack
The low level index of raw branch records for the most recent branch can
be recorded in a sample with PERF_SAMPLE_BRANCH_HW_INDEX
branch_sample_type. Extend struct branch_stack to support it.

However, if the PERF_SAMPLE_BRANCH_HW_INDEX is not applied, only nr and
entries[] will be output by kernel. The pointer of entries[] could be
wrong, since the output format is different with new struct
branch_stack. Add a variable no_hw_idx in struct perf_sample to
indicate whether the hw_idx is output. Add get_branch_entry() to return
corresponding pointer of entries[0].

To make dummy branch sample consistent as new branch sample, add hw_idx
in struct dummy_branch_stack for cs-etm and intel-pt.

Apply the new struct branch_stack for synthetic events as well.

Extend test case sample-parsing to support new struct branch_stack.

Committer notes:

Renamed get_branch_entries() to perf_sample__branch_entries() to have
proper namespacing and pave the way for this to be moved to libperf,
eventually.

Add 'static' to that inline as it is in a header.

Add 'hw_idx' to 'struct dummy_branch_stack' in cs-etm.c to fix the build
on arm64.

a1a8bed32d perf report: Tag branch type/flag on "to" and tag cycles on "from"
Current --branch-history LBR annotation displays confused data. For
example, each cycles report is duplicated on both "from" and "to"
entries.

For example:

  perf report --branch-history --no-children --stdio

  --2.32%--main div.c:39 (COND_BWD CROSS_2M predicted:49.7% cycles:1)
            main div.c:44 (predicted:49.7% cycles:1)
            main div.c:42 (RET CROSS_2M cycles:2)
            compute_flag div.c:28 (cycles:2)
            compute_flag div.c:27 (RET CROSS_2M cycles:1)
            rand rand.c:28 (cycles:1)
            rand rand.c:28 (RET CROSS_2M cycles:1)
            __random random.c:298 (cycles:1)
            __random random.c:297 (COND_BWD CROSS_2M cycles:1)
            __random random.c:295 (cycles:1)
            __random random.c:295 (COND_BWD CROSS_2M cycles:1)
            __random random.c:295 (cycles:1)
            __random random.c:295 (RET CROSS_2M cycles:9)

The cycles should be tagged only on the "from". It's for the code block
that ends with "from", not for "to".

Another issue is the "predicted:49.7%" is duplicated too (tag on both
"from" and "to").

This patch tags the branch type/flag on "to" and tag the cycles on
"from".

For example:

  --2.32%--main div.c:39 (COND_BWD CROSS_2M predicted:49.7%)
            main div.c:44 (cycles:1)
            main div.c:42 (RET CROSS_2M)
            compute_flag div.c:28 (cycles:2)
            compute_flag div.c:27 (RET CROSS_2M)
            rand rand.c:28 (cycles:1)
            rand rand.c:28 (RET CROSS_2M)
            __random random.c:298 (cycles:1)
            __random random.c:297 (COND_BWD CROSS_2M)
            __random random.c:295 (cycles:1)
            __random random.c:295 (COND_BWD CROSS_2M)
            __random random.c:295 (cycles:1)
            __random random.c:295 (RET CROSS_2M)
            |
             --2.23%--__random_r random_r.c:392 (cycles:9)

In this example, The "main div.c:39 (COND_BWD CROSS_2M predicted:49.7%)"
is "to" of branch and "main div.c:44 (cycles:1)" is "from" of branch.
It should be easier for understanding than before.

992c7e9267 perf util: Create branch.c/.h for common branch functions
Create new util/branch.c and util/branch.h to contain the common branch
functions. Such as:

branch_type_count(): Count the numbers of branch types
branch_type_name() : Return the name of branch type
branch_type_stat_display(): Display branch type statistics info
branch_type_str(): Construct the branch type string.

The branch type is saved in branch_flags.

Change log:

v8: Change PERF_BR_NONE to PERF_BR_UNKNOWN.

v7: Since the common branch type name is changed (e.g. JCC->COND),
this patch is performed the modification accordingly.

v6: Move that multiline conditional code inside {} brackets.
    Move branch_type_stat_display() from builtin-report.c to
