Many singleton patches against the MM code. The patch series which are
included in this merge do the following: - Kemeng Shi has contributed some compation maintenance work in the series "Fixes and cleanups to compaction". - Joel Fernandes has a patchset ("Optimize mremap during mutual alignment within PMD") which fixes an obscure issue with mremap()'s pagetable handling during a subsequent exec(), based upon an implementation which Linus suggested. - More DAMON/DAMOS maintenance and feature work from SeongJae Park i the following patch series: mm/damon: misc fixups for documents, comments and its tracepoint mm/damon: add a tracepoint for damos apply target regions mm/damon: provide pseudo-moving sum based access rate mm/damon: implement DAMOS apply intervals mm/damon/core-test: Fix memory leaks in core-test mm/damon/sysfs-schemes: Do DAMOS tried regions update for only one apply interval - In the series "Do not try to access unaccepted memory" Adrian Hunter provides some fixups for the recently-added "unaccepted memory' feature. To increase the feature's checking coverage. "Plug a few gaps where RAM is exposed without checking if it is unaccepted memory". - In the series "cleanups for lockless slab shrink" Qi Zheng has done some maintenance work which is preparation for the lockless slab shrinking code. - Qi Zheng has redone the earlier (and reverted) attempt to make slab shrinking lockless in the series "use refcount+RCU method to implement lockless slab shrink". - David Hildenbrand contributes some maintenance work for the rmap code in the series "Anon rmap cleanups". - Kefeng Wang does more folio conversions and some maintenance work in the migration code. Series "mm: migrate: more folio conversion and unification". - Matthew Wilcox has fixed an issue in the buffer_head code which was causing long stalls under some heavy memory/IO loads. Some cleanups were added on the way. Series "Add and use bdev_getblk()". - In the series "Use nth_page() in place of direct struct page manipulation" Zi Yan has fixed a potential issue with the direct manipulation of hugetlb page frames. - In the series "mm: hugetlb: Skip initialization of gigantic tail struct pages if freed by HVO" has improved our handling of gigantic pages in the hugetlb vmmemmep optimizaton code. This provides significant boot time improvements when significant amounts of gigantic pages are in use. - Matthew Wilcox has sent the series "Small hugetlb cleanups" - code rationalization and folio conversions in the hugetlb code. - Yin Fengwei has improved mlock()'s handling of large folios in the series "support large folio for mlock" - In the series "Expose swapcache stat for memcg v1" Liu Shixin has added statistics for memcg v1 users which are available (and useful) under memcg v2. - Florent Revest has enhanced the MDWE (Memory-Deny-Write-Executable) prctl so that userspace may direct the kernel to not automatically propagate the denial to child processes. The series is named "MDWE without inheritance". - Kefeng Wang has provided the series "mm: convert numa balancing functions to use a folio" which does what it says. - In the series "mm/ksm: add fork-exec support for prctl" Stefan Roesch makes is possible for a process to propagate KSM treatment across exec(). - Huang Ying has enhanced memory tiering's calculation of memory distances. This is used to permit the dax/kmem driver to use "high bandwidth memory" in addition to Optane Data Center Persistent Memory Modules (DCPMM). The series is named "memory tiering: calculate abstract distance based on ACPI HMAT" - In the series "Smart scanning mode for KSM" Stefan Roesch has optimized KSM by teaching it to retain and use some historical information from previous scans. - Yosry Ahmed has fixed some inconsistencies in memcg statistics in the series "mm: memcg: fix tracking of pending stats updates values". - In the series "Implement IOCTL to get and optionally clear info about PTEs" Peter Xu has added an ioctl to /proc/<pid>/pagemap which permits us to atomically read-then-clear page softdirty state. Documentation: kselftests: Remove references to bpf tests
Currently the bpf selftests are skipped by default, so is someone would like to run the tests one would need to run: $ make TARGETS=bpf SKIP_TARGETS="" kselftest To overwrite the SKIP_TARGETS that defines bpf by default. Also, following the BPF instructions[1], to run the bpf selftests one would need to enter in the tools/testing/selftests/bpf/ directory, and then run make, which is not the standard way to run selftests per it's documentation. For the reasons above stop mentioning bpf in the kselftests as examples of how to run a test suite. LoongArch: Add KASAN (Kernel Address Sanitizer) support
1/8 of kernel addresses reserved for shadow memory. But for LoongArch, There are a lot of holes between different segments and valid address space (256T available) is insufficient to map all these segments to kasan shadow memory with the common formula provided by kasan core, saying (addr >> KASAN_SHADOW_SCALE_SHIFT) + KASAN_SHADOW_OFFSET So LoongArch has a arch-specific mapping formula, different segments are mapped individually, and only limited space lengths of these specific segments are mapped to shadow. At early boot stage the whole shadow region populated with just one physical page (kasan_early_shadow_page). Later, this page is reused as readonly zero shadow for some memory that kasan currently don't track. After mapping the physical memory, pages for shadow memory are allocated and mapped. Functions like memset()/memcpy()/memmove() do a lot of memory accesses. If bad pointer passed to one of these function it is important to be caught. Compiler's instrumentation cannot do this since these functions are written in assembly. KASan replaces memory functions with manually instrumented variants. Original functions declared as weak symbols so strong definitions in mm/kasan/kasan.c could replace them. Original functions have aliases with '__' prefix in names, so we could call non-instrumented variant if needed. kasan: add support for kasan.fault=panic_on_write
KASAN's boot time kernel parameter 'kasan.fault=' currently supports 'report' and 'panic', which results in either only reporting bugs or also panicking on reports. However, some users may wish to have more control over when KASAN reports result in a kernel panic: in particular, KASAN reported invalid _writes_ are of special interest, because they have greater potential to corrupt random kernel memory or be more easily exploited. To panic on invalid writes only, introduce 'kasan.fault=panic_on_write', which allows users to choose to continue running on invalid reads, but panic only on invalid writes. Documentation: kselftest: "make headers" is a prerequisite
As per a discussion with Muhammad Usama Anjum [1], the following is how one is supposed to build selftests: make headers && make -C tools/testing/selftests/mm However, that's not yet documented anywhere. So add it to Documentation/dev-tools/kselftest.rst . selftests: allow runners to override the timeout
The default timeout for selftests tests is 45 seconds. Although we already have 13 settings for tests of about 96 sefltests which use a timeout greater than this, we want to try to avoid encouraging more tests to forcing a higher test timeout as selftests strives to run all tests quickly. Selftests also uses the timeout as a non-fatal error. Only tests runners which have control over a system would know if to treat a timeout as fatal or not. To help with all this: o Enhance documentation to avoid future increases of insane timeouts o Add the option to allow overriding the default timeout with test runners with a command line option Suggested-by: Shuah Khan <skhan@linuxfoundation.org> Signed-off-by: Luis Chamberlain <mcgrof@kernel.org> Reviewed-by: Muhammad Usama Anjum <usama.anjum@collabora.com> Tested-by:Muhammad Usama Anjum <usama.anjum@collabora.com> Signed-off-by: Shuah Khan <skhan@linuxfoundation.org> |

kunit: Add "hooks" to call into KUnit when it's built as a module
KUnit has several macros and functions intended for use from non-test
code. These hooks, currently the kunit_get_current_test() and
kunit_fail_current_test() macros, didn't work when CONFIG_KUNIT=m.
In order to support this case, the required functions and static data
need to be available unconditionally, even when KUnit itself is not
built-in. The new 'hooks.c' file is therefore always included, and has
both the static key required for kunit_get_current_test(), and a table
of function pointers in struct kunit_hooks_table. This is filled in with
the real implementations by kunit_install_hooks(), which is kept in
hooks-impl.h and called when the kunit module is loaded.
This can be extended for future features which require similar
"hook" behaviour, such as static stubs, by simply adding new entries to
the struct, and the appropriate code to set them.

kasan: allow sampling page_alloc allocations for HW_TAGS
As Hardware Tag-Based KASAN is intended to be used in production, its performance impact is crucial. As page_alloc allocations tend to be big, tagging and checking all such allocations can introduce a significant slowdown. Add two new boot parameters that allow to alleviate that slowdown: - kasan.page_alloc.sample, which makes Hardware Tag-Based KASAN tag only every Nth page_alloc allocation with the order configured by the second added parameter (default: tag every such allocation). - kasan.page_alloc.sample.order, which makes sampling enabled by the first parameter only affect page_alloc allocations with the order equal or greater than the specified value (default: 3, see below). The exact performance improvement caused by using the new parameters depends on their values and the applied workload. The chosen default value for kasan.page_alloc.sample.order is 3, which matches both PAGE_ALLOC_COSTLY_ORDER and SKB_FRAG_PAGE_ORDER. This is done for two reasons: 1. PAGE_ALLOC_COSTLY_ORDER is "the order at which allocations are deemed costly to service", which corresponds to the idea that only large and thus costly allocations are supposed to sampled. 2. One of the workloads targeted by this patch is a benchmark that sends a large amount of data over a local loopback connection. Most multi-page data allocations in the networking subsystem have the order of SKB_FRAG_PAGE_ORDER (or PAGE_ALLOC_COSTLY_ORDER). When running a local loopback test on a testing MTE-enabled device in sync mode, enabling Hardware Tag-Based KASAN introduces a ~50% slowdown. Applying this patch and setting kasan.page_alloc.sampling to a value higher than 1 allows to lower the slowdown. The performance improvement saturates around the sampling interval value of 10 with the default sampling page order of 3. This lowers the slowdown to ~20%. The slowdown in real scenarios involving the network will likely be better. Enabling page_alloc sampling has a downside: KASAN misses bad accesses to a page_alloc allocation that has not been tagged. This lowers the value of KASAN as a security mitigation. However, based on measuring the number of page_alloc allocations of different orders during boot in a test build, sampling with the default kasan.page_alloc.sample.order value affects only ~7% of allocations. The rest ~93% of allocations are still checked deterministically. Documentation: dev-tools: Clarify requirements for result description
Currently the KTAP specification says that a test result line is <result> <number> [<description>][ # [<directive>] [<diagnostic data>]] and the description of a test can be "any sequence of words (can't include #)" which specifies that there may be more than one word but does not specify anything other than those words which might be used to separate the words which probably isn't what we want. Given that practically we have tests using a range of separators for words including combinations of spaces and combinations of other symbols like underscores or punctuation let's just clarify that the description can contain any character other than # (marking the start of the directive/diagnostic) or newline (marking the end of this test result). Documentation: kunit: Fix "How Do I Use This" / "Next Steps" sections
The "How Do I Use This" section of index.rst and "Next Steps" section of start.rst were just copies of the table of contents, and therefore weren't really useful either when looking a sphinx generated output (which already had the TOC visible) or when reading the source (where it's just a list of files that ls could give you). Instead, provide a small number of concrete next steps, and a bit more description about what the pages contain. This also removes the broken reference to 'tips.rst', which was previously removed. kunit: Use the static key when retrieving the current test
In order to detect if a KUnit test is running, and to access its context, the 'kunit_test' member of the current task_struct is used. Usually, this is accessed directly or via the kunit_fail_current_task() function. In order to speed up the case where no test is running, add a wrapper, kunit_get_current_test(), which uses the static key to fail early. Equally, Speed up kunit_fail_current_test() by using the static key. This should make it convenient for code to call this unconditionally in fakes or error paths, without worrying that this will slow the code down significantly. If CONFIG_KUNIT=n (or m), this compiles away to nothing. If CONFIG_KUNIT=y, it will compile down to a NOP (on most architectures) if no KUnit test is currently running. Note that kunit_get_current_test() does not work if KUnit is built as a module. This mirrors the existing restriction on kunit_fail_current_test(). Note that the definition of kunit_fail_current_test() still wraps an empty, inline function if KUnit is not built-in. This is to ensure that the printf format string __attribute__ will still work. Also update the documentation to suggest users use the new kunit_get_current_test() function, update the example, and to describe the behaviour when KUnit is disabled better. This KUnit update for Linux 6.1-rc1 consists of several documentation fixes, UML related cleanups, and a feature to enable/disable KUnit tests. This update includes the following change to - rename all_test_uml.config, use it for --alltests Note: if anyone was using all_tests_uml.config, this change breaks them. This change simplifies the usage and eliminates the need to type: --kunitconfig=tools/testing/kunit/configs/all_tests_uml.config. A simple workaround to create a symlink to the new name can solve the problem for anyone using all_tests_uml.config. all_tests_uml.config should work across ~all architectures. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAABCgAdFiEEPZKym/RZuOCGeA/kCwJExA0NQxwFAmM97okACgkQCwJExA0N Qxwe9BAA4rUh/CdaDpGxSoknamlSlXbcsxyHQK32OoqtIQPJfPcqxZwZhqGzpZAE z7qqnfN7dGWACcJjaZYZtkjJ1tsJ7OADf6m81drM6lmHSDRldAhdXMK9qqJAA2pk OMciu7TcoSezaMw3eKZZ8jeQ2OIEUirQQXFIuMkb9r+E65tyIGCVo9njY19is6bk 7TcrUNlzgTednzkJ7B5BY54vZjvET/kwwBhXUgygMoi0JkKIoksJcxF2y7x1UKUx Kfu/3bqiBAAEiOdMLxnxqwNH/Uhny1IWV6w+p0gtEsVGS47QvRew7gtIuKgCZWpf S/w7QL+zCaXGB3jM8KVk7p4L9qU6EIttqu7kwXSs5OZz8QVrw6oc1l0RDUI5NIWi TLRO4QJHWssKNrSyldtk2J9wFEHOF48Hc6HYqHxJLFYwfutt5hzsKotN6+H60Uth TVAE+oUWknQks1Imv7x3Avq5k6CyfH9dFqqH+IrM2hDbqkZN1hfHvm1RJgcXFaHf f4UpAYwCgkb3Maa7mTBq2/x98UUhh051EQuHDUO6H0tzccxJUbwkeeGK+WH51aZu d6RD4ZnH4BlB+EMbfXgkXdsGqcsQMneoLh5/V0y1L8aSyjJQ8FYlK5lQYwu9VBXQ 6g6AH4nlhvVplXgCDeGnnTa7HfTD87Vx9Dws+uO+J/QbwqTatI4= =Q5W1 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'linux-kselftest-kunit-6.1-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/shuah/linux-kselftest Pull KUnit updates from Shuah Khan: "Several documentation fixes, UML related cleanups, and a feature to enable/disable KUnit tests This includes the change to rename all_test_uml.config, and use it for '--alltests'. kasan: dynamically allocate stack ring entries
Instead of using a large static array, allocate the stack ring dynamically via memblock_alloc(). The size of the stack ring is controlled by a new kasan.stack_ring_size command-line parameter. When kasan.stack_ring_size is not provided, the default value of 32 << 10 is used. When the stack trace collection is disabled via kasan.stacktrace=off, the stack ring is not allocated. kasan: support kasan.stacktrace for SW_TAGS
Add support for the kasan.stacktrace command-line argument for Software Tag-Based KASAN. The following patch adds a command-line argument for selecting the stack ring size, and, as the stack ring is supported by both the Software and the Hardware Tag-Based KASAN modes, it is natural that both of them have support for kasan.stacktrace too. Documentation: Kunit: Use full path to .kunitconfig
The numbered list contains full path to every files that need to be modified or created in order to implement misc-example kunit test. Except for .kunitconfig. Which might make a newcommer confused about where the file exists. Since there are multiple .kunitconfig files. Fix this by using the full path to .kunitconfig.
