printk is used by GHES to report hardware errors. Ratelimit is
enforced on the printk to avoid too many hardware error reports in
kernel log. Because there may be thousands or even millions of
corrected hardware errors during system running.
Currently, a simple scheme is used. That is, the total number of
hardware error reporting is ratelimited. This may cause some issues
in practice.
For example, there are two kinds of hardware errors occurred in
system. One is corrected memory error, because the fault memory
address is accessed frequently, there may be hundreds error report
per-second. The other is corrected PCIe AER error, it will be
reported once per-second. Because they share one ratelimit control
structure, it is highly possible that only memory error is reported.
To avoid the above issue, an error record content based throttle
algorithm is implemented in the patch. Where after the first
successful reporting, all error records that are same are throttled for
some time, to let other kinds of error records have the opportunity to
be reported.
In above example, the memory errors will be throttled for some time,
after being printked. Then the PCIe AER error will be printked
successfully.

Some APEI GHES recoverable errors are reported via NMI, but printk is
not safe in NMI context.
To solve the issue, a lock-less memory allocator is used to allocate
memory in NMI handler, save the error record into the allocated
memory, put the error record into a lock-less list. On the other
hand, an irq_work is used to delay the operation from NMI context to
IRQ context. The irq_work IRQ handler will remove nodes from
lock-less list, printk the error record and do some further processing
include recovery operation, then free the memory.

APEI firmware first mode must be turned on explicitly on some
machines, otherwise there may be no GHES hardware error record for
hardware error notification. APEI bit in generic _OSC call can be
used to do that, but on some machine, a special WHEA _OSC call must be
used. This patch adds the support to that WHEA _OSC call.

In APEI firmware first mode, hardware error is reported by hardware to
firmware firstly, then firmware reports the error to Linux in a GHES
error record via POLL/SCI/IRQ/NMI etc.
This may result in some issues if OS has no full APEI support. So
some firmware implementation will work in a back-compatible mode by
default. Where firmware will only notify OS in old-fashion, without
GHES record. For example, for a fatal hardware error, only NMI is
signaled, no GHES record.
To gain full APEI power on these machines, APEI bit in generic _OSC
call can be specified to tell firmware that Linux has full APEI
support. This patch adds the APEI bit support in generic _OSC call.

GHES (Generic Hardware Error Source) is used to process hardware error
notification in firmware first mode. But because firmware first mode
can be turned on but can not be turned off, it is unreasonable to
unload the GHES module with firmware first mode turned on. To avoid
confusion, this patch makes GHES can be enabled/disabled in
configuration time, but not built as module and unloaded at run time.

Some actions in APEI ERST and EINJ tables are optional, for example,
ACPI_EINJ_BEGIN_OPERATION action is used to do some preparation for
error injection, and firmware may choose to do nothing here. While
some other actions are mandatory, for example, firmware must provide
ACPI_EINJ_GET_ERROR_TYPE implementation.
Original implementation treats all actions as optional (that is, can
have no instructions), that may cause issue if firmware does not
provide some mandatory actions. To fix this, this patch adds
apei_exec_run_optional, which should be used for optional actions.
The original apei_exec_run should be used for mandatory actions.

That is different for fatal hardware error, because system will go
panic as soon as possible, there will be no more than several error

When we debug ERST table with erst-dbg, if the error record in ERST
table is too long(>4K), it can't be read out. So this patch increases
the buffer size to 16K to ensure such error records can be read from
ERST table.

The firmware on some machine will report duplicated hardware error
source ID in HEST. This is considered a firmware bug. To provide
better warning message, this patch adds duplicated hardware error
source ID detecting and corresponding printk.

_SxW returns an Integer containing the lowest D-state supported in state
Sx. If OSPM has not indicated that it supports _PR3, then the value “3”
corresponds to D3. If it has indicated _PR3 support, the value “3”
represents D3hot and the value “4” represents D3cold.
Linux does set _OSC._PR3, so we should fix it to expect that _SxW can
return 4.

In UP kernel, acpi_get_cpuid(...) always return -1 and
num_possible_cpus() always return 1, so
processor_physically_present(...) always returns true for all passed in
processor handles.
This is wrong for UP processor or SMP processor running UP kernel.
This patch removes the !SMP version of acpi_get_cpuid(), so both UP and
SMP kernel use the same acpi_get_cpuid function.
And for UP kernel, only processor 0 is valid.

With /sys/kernel/debug/acpi/custom_method root can write
to arbitrary memory and increase his priveleges, even if
these are restricted.
-> Make this an own debug .config option and warn about the
security issue in the config description.
-> Still keep acpi/debugfs.c which now only creates an empty
/sys/kernel/debug/acpi directory. There might be other
users of it later.

As discussed earlier, the ACPI power meter driver would better live
in drivers/hwmon, as its only purpose is to create hwmon-style
interfaces for ACPI 4.0 power meter devices. Users are more likely to

The presense of a writeq() implementation on 32-bit x86 that splits the
64-bit write into two 32-bit writes turns out to break the mpt2sas driver
(and in general is risky for drivers as was discussed in
<http://lkml.kernel.org/r/adaab6c1h7c.fsf@cisco.com>). To fix this,
revert 2c5643b1c5 ("x86: provide readq()/writeq() on 32-bit too") and
follow-on cleanups.
This unfortunately leads to pushing non-atomic definitions of readq() and
write() to various x86-only drivers that in the meantime started using the
definitions in the x86 version of <asm/io.h>. However as discussed
exhaustively, this is actually the right thing to do, because the right
way to split a 64-bit transaction is hardware dependent and therefore
belongs in the hardware driver (eg mpt2sas needs a spinlock to make sure
no other accesses occur in between the two halves of the access).
Build tested on 32- and 64-bit x86 allmodconfig.

Currently after mount/remount operation on pstore filesystem,
the content on pstore will be lost. It is because current ERST
implementation doesn't support multi-user usage, which moves
internal pointer to the end after accessing it. Adding
multi-user support for pstore usage.

the return type of function _read_ in pstore is size_t,
but in the callback function of _read_, the logic doesn't
consider it too much, which means if negative value (assuming
error here) is returned, it will be converted to positive because
of type casting. ssize_t is enough for this function.

If an attempt to get _OSC control of the PCIe native features from the
BIOS fails, report the resulting mask of control flags the BIOS was
willing to grant in the error message. Moreover, if the _OSC support
mask is insufficient for requesting control of the PCIe native features
or pcie_ports_disabled is set, print a diagnostic message containing the
_OSC support mask. This helps to diagnose obscure _OSC-related problems
on a number machines.

This change will force the execution of a _REG method underneath
the EC device even if there is no corresponding operation region
of type EmbeddedControl. Fixes a problem seen on some machines
and apparently is compatible with Windows behavior.

With dynamic debug having gained the capability to report debug messages
also during the boot process, it offers a far superior interface for
debug messages than the custom cpufreq infrastructure. As a first step,
remove the old cpufreq_debug_printk() function and replace it with a call
to the generic pr_debug() function.
How can dynamic debug be used on cpufreq? You need a kernel which has
CONFIG_DYNAMIC_DEBUG enabled.
To enabled debugging during runtime, mount debugfs and
$ echo -n 'module cpufreq +p' > /sys/kernel/debug/dynamic_debug/control
for debugging the complete "cpufreq" module. To achieve the same goal during
boot, append
ddebug_query="module cpufreq +p"
as a boot parameter to the kernel of your choice.

There is at least one BIOS with a DSDT containing a power resource
object with a _PR0 entry pointing back to that power resource. In
consequence, while registering that power resource
acpi_bus_get_power_flags() sees that it depends on itself and tries
to register it again, which leads to an infinitely deep recurrence.
This problem was introduced by commit bf325f9538
(ACPI / PM: Register power resource devices as soon as they are
needed).
To fix this problem use the observation that power resources cannot
be power manageable and prevent acpi_bus_get_power_flags() from
being called for power resource objects.

Commit 0adf3c746a introduced a regression
by making the ECDT validation test for ASUS hardware more restrictive.
The previous test used the dmi_name_in_vendors function which searches
a number of DMI fields, while the new test checked only the BIOS
vendor, which is known to not match on an ASUS F5GL laptop which
requires ECDT validation.
Add a rule to ec_dmi_table based on an alternative DMI pattern for
ASUS hardware as found elsewhere in the kernel.

With the this_cpu_xx we no longer need to pass an acpi
structure to the msr management code. Simplifies code and improves
performance.
NOTE: This code is x86 specific (see #ifdef CONFIG_X86) but not under
arch/x86.
