With this update we can now parse / update the CXL memory layout, and report events / errors from devices. This is a precursor for the CXL subsystem to handle the end-to-end "RAS" flow for CXL memory. i.e. the flow that for DDR-attached-DRAM is handled by the EDAC driver where it maps system physical address events to a field-replaceable-unit (FRU / endpoint device). In general, CXL has the potential to standardize what has historically been a pile of memory-controller-specific error handling logic. Another change of note is the default policy for handling RAM-backed device-dax instances. Previously the default access mode was "device", mmap(2) a device special file to access memory. The new default is "kmem" where the address range is assigned to the core-mm via add_memory_driver_managed(). This saves typical users from wondering why their platform memory is not visible via free(1) and stuck behind a device-file. At the same time it allows expert users to deploy policy to, for example, get dedicated access to high performance memory, or hide low performance memory from general purpose kernel allocations. This affects not only CXL, but also systems with high-bandwidth-memory that platform-firmware tags with the EFI_MEMORY_SP (special purpose) designation. Summary: - CXL RAM region enumeration: instantiate 'struct cxl_region' objects for platform firmware created memory regions - CXL RAM region provisioning: complement the existing PMEM region creation support with RAM region support - "Soft Reservation" policy change: Online (memory hot-add) soft-reserved memory (EFI_MEMORY_SP) by default, but still allow for setting aside such memory for dedicated access via device-dax. - CXL Events and Interrupts: Takeover CXL event handling from platform-firmware (ACPI calls this CXL Memory Error Reporting) and export CXL Events via Linux Trace Events. - Convey CXL _OSC results to drivers: Similar to PCI, let the CXL subsystem interrogate the result of CXL _OSC negotiation. - Emulate CXL DVSEC Range Registers as "decoders": Allow for first-generation devices that pre-date the definition of the CXL HDM Decoder Capability to translate the CXL DVSEC Range Registers into 'struct cxl_decoder' objects. - Set timestamp: Per spec, set the device timestamp in case of hotplug, or if platform-firwmare failed to set it. - General fixups: linux-next build issues, non-urgent fixes for pre-production hardware, unit test fixes, spelling and debug message improvements" * tag 'cxl-for-6.3' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/cxl/cxl: (66 commits) dax/kmem: Fix leak of memory-hotplug resources cxl/mem: Add kdoc param for event log driver state cxl/trace: Add serial number to trace points cxl/trace: Add host output to trace points cxl/trace: Standardize device information output cxl/pci: Remove locked check for dvsec_range_allowed() cxl/hdm: Add emulation when HDM decoders are not committed cxl/hdm: Create emulated cxl_hdm for devices that do not have HDM decoders cxl/hdm: Emulate HDM decoder from DVSEC range registers cxl/pci: Refactor cxl_hdm_decode_init() cxl/port: Export cxl_dvsec_rr_decode() to cxl_port cxl/pci: Break out range register decoding from cxl_hdm_decode_init() cxl: add RAS status unmasking for CXL cxl: remove unnecessary calling of pci_enable_pcie_error_reporting() dax/hmem: build hmem device support as module if possible dax: cxl: add CXL_REGION dependency cxl: avoid returning uninitialized error code cxl/pmem: Fix nvdimm registration races cxl/mem: Fix UAPI command comment cxl/uapi: Tag commands from cxl_query_cmd() ... |

Driver core changes for 6.3-rc1
Here is the large set of driver core changes for 6.3-rc1. There's a lot of changes this development cycle, most of the work falls into two different categories: - fw_devlink fixes and updates. This has gone through numerous review cycles and lots of review and testing by lots of different devices. Hopefully all should be good now, and Saravana will be keeping a watch for any potential regression on odd embedded systems. - driver core changes to work to make struct bus_type able to be moved into read-only memory (i.e. const) The recent work with Rust has pointed out a number of areas in the driver core where we are passing around and working with structures that really do not have to be dynamic at all, and they should be able to be read-only making things safer overall. This is the contuation of that work (started last release with kobject changes) in moving struct bus_type to be constant. We didn't quite make it for this release, but the remaining patches will be finished up for the release after this one, but the groundwork has been laid for this effort. Other than that we have in here: - debugfs memory leak fixes in some subsystems - error path cleanups and fixes for some never-able-to-be-hit codepaths. - cacheinfo rework and fixes - Other tiny fixes, full details are in the shortlog All of these have been in linux-next for a while with no reported problems. block: remove ->rw_page
The ->rw_page method is a special purpose bypass of the usual bio handling path that is limited to single-page reads and writes and synchronous which causes a lot of extra code in the drivers, callers and the block layer. The only remaining user is the MM swap code. Switch that swap code to simply submit a single-vec on-stack bio an synchronously wait on it based on a newly added QUEUE_FLAG_SYNCHRONOUS flag set by the drivers that currently implement ->rw_page instead. While this touches one extra cache line and executes extra code, it simplifies the block layer and drivers and ensures that all feastures are properly supported by all drivers, e.g. right now ->rw_page bypassed cgroup writeback entirely. nvdimm/region: Move cache management to the region driver
Now that cpu_cache_invalidate_memregion() is generically available, use it to centralize CPU cache management in the nvdimm region driver. This trades off removing redundant per-dimm CPU cache flushing with an opportunistic flush on every region disable event to cover the case of sensitive dirty data in the cache being written back to media after a secure erase / overwrite event. libnvdimm: Introduce CONFIG_NVDIMM_SECURITY_TEST flag
nfit_test overrode the security_show() sysfs attribute function in nvdimm dimm_devs in order to allow testing of security unlock. With the introduction of CXL security commands, the trick to override security_show() becomes significantly more complicated. By introdcing a security flag CONFIG_NVDIMM_SECURITY_TEST, libnvdimm can just toggle the check via a compile option. In addition the original override can can be removed from tools/testing/nvdimm/. The flag will also be used to bypass cpu_cache_invalidate_memregion() when set in a different commit. This allows testing on QEMU with nfit_test or cxl_test since cpu_cache_has_invalidate_memregion() checks whether X86_FEATURE_HYPERVISOR cpu feature flag is set on x86. nvdimm/cxl/pmem: Add support for master passphrase disable security command
The original nvdimm_security_ops ->disable() only supports user passphrase for security disable. The CXL spec introduced the disabling of master passphrase. Add a ->disable_master() callback to support this new operation and leaving the old ->disable() mechanism alone. A "disable_master" command is added for the sysfs attribute in order to allow command to be issued from userspace. ndctl will need enabling in order to utilize this new operation. virtio_pmem: set device ready in probe()
The NVDIMM region could be available before the virtio_device_ready()
that is called by virtio_dev_probe(). This means the driver tries to
use device before DRIVER_OK which violates the spec, fixing this by
set device ready before the nvdimm_pmem_region_create().
Note that this means the virtio_pmem_host_ack() could be triggered
before the creation of the nd region, this is safe since the pmem_lock
has been initialized and whether or not any available buffer is added
before is validated by virtio_pmem_host_ack().

virtio_pmem: initialize provider_data through nd_region_desc
We used to initialize the provider_data manually after
nvdimm_pemm_region_create(). This seems to be racy if the flush is
issued before the initialization of provider_data[1]. Fixing this by
initializing the provider_data through nd_region_desc to make sure the
provider_data is ready after the pmem is created.

cxl/region: Introduce cxl_pmem_region objects
The LIBNVDIMM subsystem is a platform agnostic representation of system NVDIMM / persistent memory resources. To date, the CXL subsystem's interaction with LIBNVDIMM has been to register an nvdimm-bridge device and cxl_nvdimm objects to proxy CXL capabilities into existing LIBNVDIMM subsystem mechanics. With regions the approach is the same. Create a new cxl_pmem_region object to proxy CXL region details into a LIBNVDIMM definition. With this enabling LIBNVDIMM can partition CXL persistent memory regions with legacy namespace labels. A follow-on patch will add CXL region label and CXL namespace label support to persist region configurations across driver reload / system-reset events. When memory-failure occurs, we call this function which is implemented by each kind of devices. For the fsdax case, pmem device driver implements it. On the CXL ACPI side this update adds support for CXL _OSC so that platform firmware knows that it is safe to still grant Linux native control of PCIe hotplug and error handling in the presence of CXL devices. pmem: implement pmem_recovery_write()
The recovery write thread started out as a normal pwrite thread and when the filesystem was told about potential media error in the range, filesystem turns the normal pwrite to a dax_recovery_write. The recovery write consists of clearing media poison, clearing page HWPoison bit, reenable page-wide read-write permission, flush the caches and finally write. A competing pread thread will be held off during the recovery process since data read back might not be valid, and this is achieved by clearing the badblock records after the recovery write is complete. Competing recovery write threads are already serialized by writer lock held by dax_iomap_rw(). Introduce dax_recovery_write() operation. The function is used to recover a dax range that contains poison. Typical use case is when a user process receives a SIGBUS with si_code BUS_MCEERR_AR indicating poison(s) in a dax range, in response, the user process issues a pwrite() to the page-aligned dax range, thus clears the poison and puts valid data in the range. mce: fix set_mce_nospec to always unmap the whole page
The set_memory_uc() approach doesn't work well in all cases.
As Dan pointed out when "The VMM unmapped the bad page from

"The guest gets virtual #MC on an access to that page. When
the guest tries to do set_memory_uc() and instructs cpa_flush()
to do clean caches that results in taking another fault / exception
perhaps because the VMM unmapped the page from the guest."
Since the driver has special knowledge to handle NP or UC,
mark the poisoned page with NP and let driver handle it when
it comes down to repair.

It is not clear why the original implementation of overwrite support
required the dimm driver to be active before overwrite could proceed. In
fact that can lead to cases where the kernel retains an invalid cached

Going forward, allow for overwrite to happen while the label area is

nvdimm: Fix firmware activation deadlock scenarios
Lockdep reports the following deadlock scenarios for CXL root device
power-management, device_prepare(), operations, and device_shutdown()
operations for 'nd_region' devices:
Chain exists of:
&nvdimm_region_key --> &nvdimm_bus->reconfig_mutex --> system_transition_mutex
Possible unsafe locking scenario:
CPU0 CPU1
---- ----
lock(system_transition_mutex);
lock(&nvdimm_bus->reconfig_mutex);
lock(system_transition_mutex);
lock(&nvdimm_region_key);
Chain exists of:
&cxl_nvdimm_bridge_key --> acpi_scan_lock --> &cxl_root_key
Possible unsafe locking scenario:
CPU0 CPU1
---- ----
lock(&cxl_root_key);
lock(acpi_scan_lock);
lock(&cxl_root_key);
lock(&cxl_nvdimm_bridge_key);
These stem from holding nvdimm_bus_lock() over hibernate_quiet_exec()
which walks the entire system device topology taking device_lock() along
the way. The nvdimm_bus_lock() is protecting against unregistration,
multiple simultaneous ops callers, and preventing activate_show() from
racing activate_store(). For the first 2, the lock is redundant.
Unregistration already flushes all ops users, and sysfs already prevents
multiple threads to be active in an ops handler at the same time. For
the last userspace should already be waiting for its last
activate_store() to complete, and does not need activate_show() to flush
the write side, so this lock usage can be deleted in these attributes.

nvdimm: Replace lockdep_mutex with local lock classes
In response to an attempt to expand dev->lockdep_mutex for device_lock() validation [1], Peter points out [2] that the lockdep API already has the ability to assign a dedicated lock class per subsystem device-type. Use lockdep_set_class() to override the default device_lock() '__lockdep_no_validate__' class for each NVDIMM subsystem device-type. This enables lockdep to detect deadlocks and recursive locking within the device-driver core and the subsystem. cxl for 5.18
- Add a driver for 'struct cxl_memdev' objects responsible for CXL.mem operation as distinct from 'cxl_pci' mailbox operations. Its primary responsibility is enumerating an endpoint 'struct cxl_port' and all the 'struct cxl_port' instances between an endpoint and the CXL platform root. - Add a driver for 'struct cxl_port' objects responsible for enumerating and operating all Host-managed Device Memory (HDM) decoder resources between the platform-level CXL memory description, all intervening host bridges / switches, and the HDM resources in endpoints. - Update the cxl_pci driver to validate CXL.mem operation precursors to HDM decoder operation like ready-polling, and legacy CXL 1.1 DVSEC based CXL.mem configuration. - Add basic lockdep coverage for usage of device_lock() on CXL subsystem objects similar to what exists for LIBNVDIMM. Include a compile-time switch for which subsystem to validate at run-time. - Update cxl_test to emulate a one level switch topology. - Document a "Theory of Operation" for the subsystem. - Add 'numa_node' and 'serial' attributes to cxl_memdev sysfs - Include miscellaneous fixes for spec / QEMU CXL emulation compatibility and static analysis reports. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iHUEABYIAB0WIQSbo+XnGs+rwLz9XGXfioYZHlFsZwUCYjpX6AAKCRDfioYZHlFs ZzyxAQCztxAXj7mzkm1Qt5zZz4e7p/6sR49B03jBTfPtrEF9kQEAl9R15WVt6U+o Ooof1XhRic3kT6e8zS3ZVKHzGduYxwM= =mR94 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'cxl-for-5.18' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/cxl/cxl Pull CXL (Compute Express Link) updates from Dan Williams: "This development cycle extends the subsystem to discover CXL resources throughout a CXL/PCIe switch topology and respond to hot add/remove events anywhere in that topology. drivers/nvdimm: Fix build failure when CONFIG_PERF_EVENTS is not set
The following build failure occurs when CONFIG_PERF_EVENTS is not set
as generic pmu functions are not visible in that scenario.
|-- s390-randconfig-r044-20220313
| |-- nd_perf.c:(.text):undefined-reference-to-perf_pmu_migrate_context
| |-- nd_perf.c:(.text):undefined-reference-to-perf_pmu_register
| `-- nd_perf.c:(.text):undefined-reference-to-perf_pmu_unregister
Similar build failure in nds32 architecture:
nd_perf.c:(.text+0x21e): undefined reference to `perf_pmu_migrate_context'
nd_perf.c:(.text+0x434): undefined reference to `perf_pmu_register'
nd_perf.c:(.text+0x57c): undefined reference to `perf_pmu_unregister'
Fix this issue by adding check for CONFIG_PERF_EVENTS config option
and disabling the nvdimm perf interface incase this config is not set.
Also remove function declaration of perf_pmu_migrate_context,
perf_pmu_register, perf_pmu_unregister functions from nd.h as these are
common pmu functions which are part of perf_event.h and since we
are disabling nvdimm perf interface incase CONFIG_PERF_EVENTS option
is not set, we not need to declare them in nd.h
Also move the platform_device header file addition part from nd.h to
nd_perf.c and add stub functions for register_nvdimm_pmu and
unregister_nvdimm_pmu functions to handle CONFIG_PERF_EVENTS=n
case.
