2681bd85a4 perf tools: Remove repipe argument from perf_session__new()
The repipe argument is only used by perf inject and the all others
passes 'false'. Let's remove it from the function signature and add
__perf_session__new() to be called from perf inject directly.

This is a preparation of the change the pipe input/output.

6549a8c0c3 perf tools: Replace zero-length array with flexible-array
The current codebase makes use of the zero-length array language
extension to the C90 standard, but the preferred mechanism to declare
variable-length types such as these ones is a flexible array
member[1][2], introduced in C99:

struct foo {
        int stuff;
        struct boo array[];
};

By making use of the mechanism above, we will get a compiler warning in
case the flexible array does not occur last in the structure, which will
help us prevent some kind of undefined behavior bugs from being
inadvertently introduced[3] to the codebase from now on.

Also, notice that, dynamic memory allocations won't be affected by this
change:

"Flexible array members have incomplete type, and so the sizeof operator
may not be applied. As a quirk of the original implementation of
zero-length arrays, sizeof evaluates to zero."[1]

sizeof(flexible-array-member) triggers a warning because flexible array
members have incomplete type[1]. There are some instances of code in
which the sizeof operator is being incorrectly/erroneously applied to
zero-length arrays and the result is zero. Such instances may be hiding
some bugs. So, this work (flexible-array member conversions) will also
help to get completely rid of those sorts of issues.

This issue was found with the help of Coccinelle.

6ef81c55a2 perf session: Return error code for perf_session__new() function on failure
This patch is to return error code of perf_new_session function on
failure instead of NULL.

Test Results:

Before Fix:

  $ perf c2c report -input
  failed to open nput: No such file or directory

  $ echo $?
  0
  $

After Fix:

  $ perf c2c report -input
  failed to open nput: No such file or directory

  $ echo $?
  254
  $

Committer notes:

Fix 'perf tests topology' case, where we use that TEST_ASSERT_VAL(...,
session), i.e. we need to pass zero in case of failure, which was the
case before when NULL was returned by perf_session__new() for failure,
but now we need to negate the result of IS_ERR(session) to respect that
TEST_ASSERT_VAL) expectation of zero meaning failure.

0ac1dd5b4a perf timechart: Refactor svg_build_topology_map()
Exchange the parameters of svg_build_topology_map() with 'struct
perf_env *env' and adjust the function accordingly.

This patch should not change any behavior, it is merely refactoring for
the following patch.

Committer notes:

No need to include env.h from svghelper.h, all it needs is a forward
declaration for 'struct perf_env', so move the include directive to
svghelper.c, where it is really needed.

1fc632cef4 libperf: Move perf_event_attr field from perf's evsel to libperf's perf_evsel

Committer notes:

Fixed up these:

 tools/perf/arch/arm/util/auxtrace.c
 tools/perf/arch/arm/util/cs-etm.c
 tools/perf/arch/arm64/util/arm-spe.c
 tools/perf/arch/s390/util/auxtrace.c
 tools/perf/util/cs-etm.c

Also

  cc1: warnings being treated as errors
  tests/sample-parsing.c: In function 'do_test':
  tests/sample-parsing.c:162: error: missing initializer
  tests/sample-parsing.c:162: error: (near initialization for 'evsel.core.cpus')

  -			.sample_type = sample_type,
  -			.read_format = read_format,
  +		.core = {
  +			. attr = {
  +				.sample_type = sample_type,
  +				.read_format = read_format,
  +			},

  [perfbuilder@a70e4eeb5549 /]$ gcc --version |& head -1
  gcc (GCC) 4.4.7

Also we don't need to include perf_event.h in
tools/perf/lib/include/perf/evsel.h, forward declaring 'struct
perf_event_attr' is enough. And this even fixes the build in some
systems where things are used somewhere down the include path from
perf_event.h without defining __always_inline.

2d4f27999b perf data: Add global path holder
Add a 'path' member to 'struct perf_data'. It will keep the configured

now dynamically allocated (duped) from it.

This scheme is useful/used in following patches where struct
perf_data::path holds the 'configure' directory path and struct
perf_data_file::path holds the allocated path for specific files.

Also it actually makes the code little simpler.

d7a8c4a6a0 perf tools: Add missing open_memstream() prototype for systems lacking it

4546263d72 perf thread: Introduce thread__find_symbol()
Out of thread__find_addr_location(..., MAP__FUNCTION, ...), idea here is to
continue removing references to MAP__{FUNCTION,VARIABLE} ahead of
getting both types of symbols in the same rbtree, as various places do
two lookups, looking first at MAP__FUNCTION, then at MAP__VARIABLE.

So thread__find_symbol() will eventually do just that, and 'struct
symbol' will have the symbol type, for code that cares about that.

b91fc39f4a perf machine: Protect the machine->threads with a rwlock
In addition to using refcounts for the struct thread lifetime
management, we need to protect access to machine->threads from
concurrent access.

That happens in 'perf top', where a thread processes events, inserting
and deleting entries from that rb_tree while another thread decays
hist_entries, that end up dropping references and ultimately deleting
threads from the rb_tree and releasing its resources when no further
hist_entry (or other data structures, like in 'perf sched') references
it.

So the rule is the same for refcounts + protected trees in the kernel,
get the tree lock, find object, bump the refcount, drop the tree lock,
return, use object, drop the refcount if no more use of it is needed,
keep it if storing it in some other data structure, drop when releasing
that data structure.

I.e. pair "t = machine__find(new)_thread()" with a "thread__put(t)", and
"perf_event__preprocess_sample(&al)" with "addr_location__put(&al)".

The addr_location__put() one is because as we return references to
several data structures, we may end up adding more reference counting
for the other data structures and then we'll drop it at
addr_location__put() time.

0a7e6d1b68 perf tools: Check recorded kernel version when finding vmlinux
Currently vmlinux_path__init() only tries to find vmlinux file from

We can use --symfs option for this but it's annoying for user to do it
always. As we already have the info in the perf.data file, it can be
changed to use it for the search automatically.

Before:

  $ perf report

263f89bf7d perf timechart: Fix off-by-one error in 'record' argv handling
Since 367b315 (perf timechart: Add support for -P and -T in timechart
recording, 2013-11-01), the 'perf timechart record' command stopped
working:

  $ perf timechart record -- git status
  Workload failed: No such file or directory

This happens because of an off-by-one error while preparing the argv for
cmd_record(): it attempts to execute the command 'status' and complains
that it doesn't exist. Fix this error.

3415d8b851 perf timechart: Fix wrong SVG height
If we call perf timechart with -p 0 arguments, it means we don't want
any tasks related data. It works, but space for tasks data is reserved
in the generated SVG. Remove this unused empty space via passing 0 as
count to the open_svg.

046625231a perf tools: Introduce zfree
For the frequent idiom of:

   free(ptr);
   ptr = NULL;

Make it expect a pointer to the pointer being freed, so that it becomes
clear at first sight that the variable being freed is being modified.
