Merge tag 'random-6.0-rc1-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/crng/random
Pull random number generator updates from Jason Donenfeld:
"Though there's been a decent amount of RNG-related development during
this last cycle, not all of it is coming through this tree, as this
cycle saw a shift toward tackling early boot time seeding issues,
which took place in other trees as well.
Here's a summary of the various patches:
- The CONFIG_ARCH_RANDOM .config option and the "nordrand" boot
option have been removed, as they overlapped with the more widely
supported and more sensible options, CONFIG_RANDOM_TRUST_CPU and
"random.trust_cpu". This change allowed simplifying a bit of arch
code.
- x86's RDRAND boot time test has been made a bit more robust, with
RDRAND disabled if it's clearly producing bogus results. This would
be a tip.git commit, technically, but I took it through random.git
to avoid a large merge conflict.
- The RNG has long since mixed in a timestamp very early in boot, on
the premise that a computer that does the same things, but does so
starting at different points in wall time, could be made to still
produce a different RNG state. Unfortunately, the clock isn't set
early in boot on all systems, so now we mix in that timestamp when
the time is actually set.
- User Mode Linux now uses the host OS's getrandom() syscall to
generate a bootloader RNG seed and later on treats getrandom() as
the platform's RDRAND-like faculty.
- The arch_get_random_{seed_,}_long() family of functions is now
arch_get_random_{seed_,}_longs(), which enables certain platforms,
such as s390, to exploit considerable performance advantages from
requesting multiple CPU random numbers at once, while at the same
time compiling down to the same code as before on platforms like
x86.
- A small cleanup changing a cmpxchg() into a try_cmpxchg(), from
Uros.
- A comment spelling fix"
More info about other random number changes that come in through various
architecture trees in the full commentary in the pull request:

random: correct spelling of "overwrites"
random: handle archrandom with multiple longs
um: seed rng using host OS rng
random: use try_cmpxchg in _credit_init_bits
timekeeping: contribute wall clock to rng on time change
x86/rdrand: Remove "nordrand" flag in favor of "random.trust_cpu"
random: remove CONFIG_ARCH_RANDOM
The preferred nomenclature is pnv_, not powernv_, but rng.c used
powernv_ for some reason, which isn't consistent with the rest. A recent
commit added a few pnv_ functions to rng.c, making the file a bit of a
mishmash. This commit just replaces the rest of them.

Rework cpufeature implementation to allow for various cpu feature
indications, which is not only limited to hwcap bits. This is achieved
by adding a sequential list of cpu feature numbers, where each of them
is mapped to an entry which indicates what this number is about.
Each entry contains a type member, which indicates what feature
name space to look into (e.g. hwcap, or cpu facility). If wanted this
allows also to automatically load modules only in e.g. z/VM
configurations.

When RDRAND was introduced, there was much discussion on whether it
should be trusted and how the kernel should handle that. Initially, two
mechanisms cropped up, CONFIG_ARCH_RANDOM, a compile time switch, and
"nordrand", a boot-time switch.
Later the thinking evolved. With a properly designed RNG, using RDRAND
values alone won't harm anything, even if the outputs are malicious.
Rather, the issue is whether those values are being *trusted* to be good
or not. And so a new set of options were introduced as the real
ones that people use -- CONFIG_RANDOM_TRUST_CPU and "random.trust_cpu".
With these options, RDRAND is used, but it's not always credited. So in
the worst case, it does nothing, and in the best case, maybe it helps.
Along the way, CONFIG_ARCH_RANDOM's meaning got sort of pulled into the
center and became something certain platforms force-select.
The old options don't really help with much, and it's a bit odd to have
special handling for these instructions when the kernel can deal fine
with the existence or untrusted existence or broken existence or
non-existence of that CPU capability.
Simplify the situation by removing CONFIG_ARCH_RANDOM and using the
ordinary asm-generic fallback pattern instead, keeping the two options
that are actually used. For now it leaves "nordrand" for now, as the
removal of that will take a different route.

add_hwgenerator_randomness() is a function implemented and documented
inside of random.c. It is the way that hardware RNGs push data into it.
Therefore, it should be declared in random.h. Otherwise sparse complains
with:
random.c:1137:6: warning: symbol 'add_hwgenerator_randomness' was not declared. Should it be static?
The alternative would be to include hw_random.h into random.c, but that
wouldn't really be good for anything except slowing down compile time.

Based on the updates to the quality setting, the rngd kernel thread
may be stopped (if no hw_random device is trusted to return entropy),
may be started (if the quality setting is increased from zero), or
may use a different hw_random source (if that has higher quality
output).

The current_quality variable exposed as a module parameter is
fundamentally broken: If it is set at boot time, it is overwritten once
the first hw rng device is loaded; if it is set at runtime, it is
without effect if the hw rng device had its quality value set to 0 (and
no default_quality was set); and if a new rng is selected, it gets
overwritten. Therefore, mark it as obsolete, and replace it by the
per-rng quality setting.

In case the entropy quality is low, there may be less than one bit to
credit in the call to add_hwgenerator_randomness(): The number of bytes
returned by rng_get_data() multiplied by the current quality (in entropy
bits per 1024 bits of input) must be larger than 128 to credit at least
one bit. However, imx-rngc.c sets the quality to 19, but may return less
than 32 bytes; hid_u2fzero.c sets the quality to 1; and users may override
the quality setting manually.

For two reasons, current_quality may become zero within the rngd
kernel thread: (1) The user lowers current_quality to 0 by writing
to the sysfs module parameter file (note that increasing the quality
from zero is without effect at the moment), or (2) there are two or
more hwrng devices registered, and those which provide quality>0 are
unregistered, but one with quality==0 remains.
If current_quality is 0, the randomness is not trusted and cannot help
to increase the entropy count. That will lead to continuous calls to
the hwrngd thread and continuous stirring of the input pool with
untrusted bits.

This RNG device is present on Marvell OcteonTx2 silicons as well and
also provides entropy health status.
HW continuously checks health condition of entropy and reports
faults. Fault is in terms of co-processor cycles since last fault
detected. This doesn't get cleared and only updated when new fault
is detected. Also there are chances of detecting false positives.
So to detect a entropy failure SW has to check if failures are
persistent ie cycles elapsed is frequently updated by HW.
This patch adds support to detect health failures using below algo.
1. Consider any fault detected before 10ms as a false positive and ignore.
10ms is chosen randomly, no significance.
2. Upon first failure detection make a note of cycles elapsed and when this
error happened in realtime (cntvct).
3. Upon subsequent failure, check if this is new or a old one by comparing
current cycles with the ones since last failure. cycles or time since
last failure is calculated using cycles and time info captured at (2).
HEALTH_CHECK status register is not available to VF, hence had to map
PF registers. Also since cycles are in terms of co-processor cycles,
had to retrieve co-processor clock rate from RST device.

When virtio-rng device was dropped by the hwrng core we were forced
to wait the buffer to come back from the device to not have
remaining ongoing operation that could spoil the buffer.
But now, as the buffer is internal to the virtio-rng we can release
the waiting loop immediately, the buffer will be retrieve and use
when the virtio-rng driver will be selected again.
This avoids to hang on an rng_current write command if the virtio-rng
device is blocked by a lack of entropy. This allows to select
another entropy source if the current one is empty.

hwrng core uses two buffers that can be mixed in the
virtio-rng queue.
If the buffer is provided with wait=0 it is enqueued in the
virtio-rng queue but unused by the caller.
On the next call, core provides another buffer but the
first one is filled instead and the new one queued.
And the caller reads the data from the new one that is not
updated, and the data in the first one are lost.
To avoid this mix, virtio-rng needs to use its own unique
internal buffer at a cost of a data copy to the caller buffer.

Currently mtk_rng_runtime_suspend/resume is called for both runtime pm
and system sleep operations.
This is wrong as these should only be runtime ops as the name already
suggests. Currently freezing the system will lead to a call to
mtk_rng_runtime_suspend even if the device currently isn't active. This
leads to a clock warning because it is disabled/unprepared although it
isn't enabled/prepared currently.
This patch fixes this by only setting the runtime pm ops and forces to
call the runtime pm ops from the system sleep ops as well if active but
not otherwise.

The "Arm True Random Number Generator Firmware Interface"[1] provides
an SMCCC based interface to a true hardware random number generator.
So far we are using that in arch_get_random_seed(), but it might be
useful to expose the entropy through the /dev/hwrng device as well. This
allows to assess the quality of the implementation, by using "rngtest"
from the rng-tools package, for example.
Add a simple platform driver implementing the hw_random interface.
The corresponding platform device is created by the SMCCC core code,
we just match it here by name and provide a module alias.
Since the firmware takes care about serialisation, this can happily
coexist with the arch_get_random_seed() bits.

A few SoC (code) changes have queued up this cycle, mostly for minor
changes and some refactoring and cleanup of legacy platforms. This
branch also contains a few of the fixes that weren't sent in by the end

- Adding an additional maintainer for the TEE subsystem (Sumit Garg)
- Quite a significant modernization of the IXP4xx platforms by Linus
Walleij, revisiting with a new PCI host driver/binding, removing legacy
mach/* include dependencies and moving platform detection/config to
drivers/soc. Also some updates/cleanup of platform data.
- Core power domain support for Tegra platforms, and some improvements
in build test coverage by adding stubs for compile test targets.
- A handful of updates to i.MX platforms, adding legacy (non-PSCI) SMP
support on i.MX7D, SoC ID setup for i.MX50, removal of platform data
and board fixups for iMX6/7.
... and a few smaller changes and fixes for Samsung, OMAP, Allwinner,

"A few SoC (code) changes have queued up this cycle, mostly for minor
changes and some refactoring and cleanup of legacy platforms. This
branch also contains a few of the fixes that weren't sent in by the
end of the release (all fairly minor).
- Adding an additional maintainer for the TEE subsystem (Sumit Garg)
- Quite a significant modernization of the IXP4xx platforms by Linus
Walleij, revisiting with a new PCI host driver/binding, removing
legacy mach/* include dependencies and moving platform
detection/config to drivers/soc. Also some updates/cleanup of
platform data.
- Core power domain support for Tegra platforms, and some
improvements in build test coverage by adding stubs for compile
test targets.
- A handful of updates to i.MX platforms, adding legacy (non-PSCI)
SMP support on i.MX7D, SoC ID setup for i.MX50, removal of platform
data and board fixups for iMX6/7.
... and a few smaller changes and fixes for Samsung, OMAP, Allwinner,

The driver core ignores the return value of struct bus_type::remove()
because there is only little that can be done. To simplify the quest to
make this function return void, let struct vio_driver::remove() return
void, too. All users already unconditionally return 0, this commit makes
it obvious that returning an error code is a bad idea.
Note there are two nominally different implementations for a vio bus:
one in arch/sparc/kernel/vio.c and the other in
arch/powerpc/platforms/pseries/vio.c. This patch only adapts the powerpc
one.
Before this patch for a device that was bound to a driver without a
remove callback vio_cmo_bus_remove(viodev) wasn't called. As the device
core still considers the device unbound after vio_bus_remove() returns
calling this unconditionally is the consistent behaviour which is
implemented here.

All amba drivers return 0 in their remove callback. Together with the
driver core ignoring the return value anyhow, it doesn't make sense to
return a value here.
Change the remove prototype to return void, which makes it explicit that
returning an error value doesn't work as expected. This simplifies changing
the core remove callback to return void, too.

The UML random driver creates a dummy device under the guest,
/dev/hw_random. When this file is read from the guest, the driver
reads from the host machine's /dev/random, in-turn reading from
the host kernel's entropy pool. This entropy pool could have been
filled by a hardware random number generator or just the host
kernel's internal software entropy generator.
Currently the driver does not fill the guests kernel entropy pool,
this requires a userspace tool running inside the guest (like
rng-tools) to read from the dummy device provided by this driver,
which then would fill the guest's internal entropy pool.
This all seems quite pointless when we are already reading from an
entropy pool, so this patch aims to register the device as a hwrng
device using the hwrng-core framework. This not only improves and
cleans up the driver, but also fills the guest's entropy pool
without having to resort to using extra userspace tools in the guest.
This is typically a nuisance when booting a guest: the random pool
takes a long time (~200s) to build up enough entropy since the dummy
hwrng is not used to fill the guest's pool.
This port was originally attempted by Alexander Neville "dark" (in CC,
discussion in Link), but the conversation there stalled since the
handling of -EAGAIN errors were no removed and longer handled by the
driver. This patch attempts to use the existing method of error
handling but utilises the new hwrng core.
The issue can be noticed when booting a UML guest:
[ 2.560000] random: fast init done
[ 214.000000] random: crng init done
With the patch applied, filling the pool becomes a lot quicker:
[ 2.560000] random: fast init done
[ 12.000000] random: crng init done

The s390-trng does provide 100% entropy. The quality value is supported
to be between 1 and 1024 and not 1..1000. Use 1024 to make this driver
the preferred one. If we ever have a better driver that has the same
quality but is faster we can change this again when merging the new
driver. No need to be conservative.
This makes sure that the hw variant is preferred over things like
virtio-rng, where the hypervisor has a potential to be misconfigured
and thus should have a slightly lower confidence.

The RNGB can generate 2^20 words (1 word == 4 byte) of 'random' data
after the seed pool was initialized. The pool needs to be reseeded if
more words are required. The reseeding is done automatically since
commit 3acd9ea933 ("hwrng: imx-rngc - use automatic seeding").
We can't retrieve the TRNG values directly so we need a other way to get
the quality level. We know that the PRNG uses 20.000 entropy samples
from the TRNG to generate 2^20 words (1MiB) and the quality level is
defined as (in bits of entropy per 1024 bits of input). So the quality
level can be calculated by:
20.000 * 1024
------------- = ~ 19.5

The current code waits for data to be available before attempting a
second read. However the second read would not be executed as the
while loop will exit.
This fix does not wait if all data has been read (skips the call to
msleep(0)) and reads a second time if partial data was retrieved on
the first read.
Worth noticing that since msleep(0) schedules a one jiffy timeout is
better to skip such a call.

The interrupt is unmasked while self-test is running and when the rngc

Commit daae28debc has moved add_early_randomness() out of the
rng_mutex and tries to protect the reference of the new rng device
by incrementing the reference counter.
But in hwrng_register(), the function can be called with a new device
that is not set as the current_rng device and the reference has not been
initialized. This patch fixes the problem by not using the reference
counter when the device is not the current one: the reference counter
is only meaningful in the case of the current rng device and a device
is not used if it is not the current one (except in hwrng_register())
The problem has been reported by Marek Szyprowski on ARM 32bit

add_early_randomness() is called every time a new rng backend is added
and every time it is set as the current rng provider.
add_early_randomness() is called from functions locking rng_mutex,
and if it hangs all the hw_random framework hangs: we can't read sysfs,
add or remove a backend.
This patch move add_early_randomness() out of the rng_mutex zone.
It only needs the reading_mutex.

This allows us to simplify things more for probe and exit.

Nowadays we have runtime PM, and we can use it with autosuspend_timeout
to idle things automatically. This allows us to get rid of the custom
PM implementation.
We enable clocks and init RNG in runtime_resume, and reset RNG and
disable clocks in runtime_suspend. And then omap3_rom_rng_read()
becomes very simple and we don't need the old functions for
omap3_rom_rng_idle() and omap3_rom_rng_get_random(). We can now also
get rid of pr_fmt as we're using dev_err instead.

Let's update omap3-rom-rng to use standard driver data to make it easier
to add runtime PM support in the following patch. Just use it for the
rng ops and clock for now. Let's still keep also old rng_clk still around,
we will remove delayed work and rng_clk with runtime PM in the next patch.

Similar to commit 62f95ae805 ("hwrng: omap - Set default quality")
we need to initialize the default quality for the RNG to be used.
The symptoms of this problem is that doing hd /dev/random does not
produce much data at all.
