f7a449f779 mm: memcontrol: rename memcg_kmem_enabled()
Currently there are two kmem-related helper functions with a confusing
semantics: memcg_kmem_enabled() and mem_cgroup_kmem_disabled().

The problem is that an obvious expectation
memcg_kmem_enabled() == !mem_cgroup_kmem_disabled(),
can be false.

mem_cgroup_kmem_disabled() is similar to mem_cgroup_disabled(): it returns
true only if CONFIG_MEMCG_KMEM is not set or the kmem accounting is
disabled using a boot time kernel option "cgroup.memory=nokmem". It never
changes the value dynamically.

memcg_kmem_enabled() is different: it always returns false until the first
non-root memory cgroup will get online (assuming the kernel memory
accounting is enabled). It's goal is to improve the performance on
systems without the cgroupfs mounted/memory controller enabled or on the
systems with only the root memory cgroup.

To make things more obvious and avoid potential bugs, let's rename
memcg_kmem_enabled() to memcg_kmem_online().

bb94429096 mm/slab: add is_kmalloc_cache() helper function
commit 6edf2576a6 ("mm/slub: enable debugging memory wasting of
kmalloc") introduces 'SLAB_KMALLOC' bit specifying whether a kmem_cache is
a kmalloc cache for slab/slub (slob doesn't have dedicated kmalloc
caches).

Add a helper inline function for other components like kasan to simplify
code.

dc19745ad0 Merge branch 'slub-tiny-v1r6' into slab/for-next
Merge my series [1] to deprecate the SLOB allocator.
- Renames CONFIG_SLOB to CONFIG_SLOB_DEPRECATED with deprecation notice.
- The recommended replacement is CONFIG_SLUB, optionally with the new
CONFIG_SLUB_TINY tweaks for systems with 16MB or less RAM.
- Use cases that stopped working with CONFIG_SLUB_TINY instead of SLOB
should be reported to linux-mm@kvack.org and slab maintainers,
otherwise SLOB will be removed in few cycles.

6cd6d33ca4 mm/slub, kunit: Add a test case for kmalloc redzone check
kmalloc redzone check for slub has been merged, and it's better to add
a kunit case for it, which is inspired by a real-world case as described
in commit 120ee599b5 ("staging: octeon-usb: prevent memory corruption"):

"
octeon-hcd will crash the kernel when SLOB is used. This usually happens
after the 18-byte control transfer when a device descriptor is read.
The DMA engine is always transferring full 32-bit words and if the
transfer is shorter, some random garbage appears after the buffer.
The problem is not visible with SLUB since it rounds up the allocations
to word boundary, and the extra bytes will go undetected.
"

To avoid interrupting the normal functioning of kmalloc caches, a
kmem_cache mimicing kmalloc cache is created with similar flags, and
kmalloc_trace() is used to really test the orig_size and redzone setup.

346907ceb9 mm, slab: ignore hardened usercopy parameters when disabled
With CONFIG_HARDENED_USERCOPY not enabled, there are no
__check_heap_object() checks happening that would use the struct
kmem_cache useroffset and usersize fields. Yet the fields are still
initialized, preventing merging of otherwise compatible caches.

Also the fields contribute to struct kmem_cache size unnecessarily when
unused. Thus #ifdef them out completely when CONFIG_HARDENED_USERCOPY is
disabled. In kmem_dump_obj() print object_size instead of usersize, as
that's actually the intention.

In a quick virtme boot test, this has reduced the number of caches in
/proc/slabinfo from 131 to 111.

90e9b23a60 Merge branch 'slab/for-6.2/kmalloc_redzone' into slab/for-next
kmalloc() redzone improvements by Feng Tang

From cover letter [1]:

kmalloc's API family is critical for mm, and one of its nature is that
it will round up the request size to a fixed one (mostly power of 2).
When user requests memory for '2^n + 1' bytes, actually 2^(n+1) bytes
could be allocated, so there is an extra space than what is originally
requested.

This patchset tries to extend the redzone sanity check to the extra
kmalloced buffer than requested, to better detect un-legitimate access
to it. (depends on SLAB_STORE_USER & SLAB_RED_ZONE)

76537db3b9 Merge branch 'slab/for-6.2/fit_rcu_head' into slab/for-next
A series by myself to reorder fields in struct slab to allow the
embedded rcu_head to grow (for debugging purposes). Requires changes to
isolate_movable_page() to skip slab pages which can otherwise become
false-positive __PageMovable due to its use of low bits in
page->mapping.

130d4df573 mm/sl[au]b: rearrange struct slab fields to allow larger rcu_head
Joel reports [1] that increasing the rcu_head size for debugging
purposes used to work before struct slab was split from struct page, but
now runs into the various SLAB_MATCH() sanity checks of the layout.

This is because the rcu_head in struct page is in union with large
sub-structures and has space to grow without exceeding their size, while
in struct slab (for SLAB and SLUB) it's in union only with a list_head.

On closer inspection (and after the previous patch) we can put all
fields except slab_cache to a union with rcu_head, as slab_cache is
sufficient for the rcu freeing callbacks to work and the rest can be
overwritten by rcu_head without causing issues.

This is only somewhat complicated by the need to keep SLUB's
freelist+counters aligned for cmpxchg_double. As a result the fields
need to be reordered so that slab_cache is first (after page flags) and
the union with rcu_head follows. For consistency, do that for SLAB as
well, although not necessary there.

As a result, the rcu_head field in struct page and struct slab is no
longer at the same offset, but that doesn't matter as there is no
casting that would rely on that in the slab freeing callbacks, so we can
just drop the respective SLAB_MATCH() check.

Also we need to update the SLAB_MATCH() for compound_head to reflect the
new ordering.

While at it, also add a static_assert to check the alignment needed for
cmpxchg_double so mistakes are found sooner than a runtime GPF.

946fa0dbf2 mm/slub: extend redzone check to extra allocated kmalloc space than requested
kmalloc will round up the request size to a fixed size (mostly power
of 2), so there could be a extra space than what is requested, whose
size is the actual buffer size minus original request size.

To better detect out of bound access or abuse of this space, add
redzone sanity check for it.

In current kernel, some kmalloc user already knows the existence of
the space and utilizes it after calling 'ksize()' to know the real
size of the allocated buffer. So we skip the sanity check for objects
which have been called with ksize(), as treating them as legitimate
users. Kees Cook is working on sanitizing all these user cases,
by using kmalloc_size_roundup() to avoid ambiguous usages. And after
this is done, this special handling for ksize() can be removed.

In some cases, the free pointer could be saved inside the latter
part of object data area, which may overlap the redzone part(for
small sizes of kmalloc objects). As suggested by Hyeonggon Yoo,
force the free pointer to be in meta data area when kmalloc redzone
debug is enabled, to make all kmalloc objects covered by redzone
check.

9ce67395f5 mm/slub: only zero requested size of buffer for kzalloc when debug enabled
kzalloc/kmalloc will round up the request size to a fixed size
(mostly power of 2), so the allocated memory could be more than
requested. Currently kzalloc family APIs will zero all the
allocated memory.

To detect out-of-bound usage of the extra allocated memory, only
zero the requested part, so that redzone sanity check could be
added to the extra space later.

For kzalloc users who will call ksize() later and utilize this
extra space, please be aware that the space is not zeroed any
more when debug is enabled. (Thanks to Kees Cook's effort to
sanitize all ksize() user cases [1], this won't be a big issue).

68ef169a1d mm: kmsan: call KMSAN hooks from SLUB code
In order to report uninitialized memory coming from heap allocations KMSAN
has to poison them unless they're created with __GFP_ZERO.

It's handy that we need KMSAN hooks in the places where
init_on_alloc/init_on_free initialization is performed.

In addition, we apply __no_kmsan_checks to get_freepointer_safe() to
suppress reports when accessing freelist pointers that reside in freed
objects.

b77d5b1b83 mm: slab: optimize memcg_slab_free_hook()
Most callers of memcg_slab_free_hook() already know the slab, which could
be passed to memcg_slab_free_hook() directly to reduce the overhead of an
another call of virt_to_slab(). For bulk freeing of objects, the call of
slab_objcgs() in the loop in memcg_slab_free_hook() is redundant as well.
Rework memcg_slab_free_hook() and build_detached_freelist() to reduce
those unnecessary overhead and make memcg_slab_free_hook() can handle bulk
freeing in slab_free().

Move the calling site of memcg_slab_free_hook() from do_slab_free() to
slab_free() for slub to make the code clearer since the logic is weird
(e.g. the caller need to judge whether it needs to call
memcg_slab_free_hook()). It is easy to make mistakes like missing calling
of memcg_slab_free_hook() like fixes of:

  commit d1b2cf6cb8 ("mm: memcg/slab: uncharge during kmem_cache_free_bulk()")
commit ae085d7f93 ("mm: kfence: fix missing objcg housekeeping for SLAB")

This optimization is mainly for bulk objects freeing. The following numbers
is shown for 16-object freeing.

                           before after
  kmem_cache_free_bulk: ~430 ns ~400 ns

The overhead is reduced by about 7% for 16-object freeing.

Pull slab updates from Vlastimil Babka:

 - Conversion of slub_debug stack traces to stackdepot, allowing more
useful debugfs-based inspection for e.g. memory leak debugging.
Allocation and free debugfs info now includes full traces and is
sorted by the unique trace frequency.

The stackdepot conversion was already attempted last year but
reverted by ae14c63a9f. The memory overhead (while not actually
enabled on boot) has been meanwhile solved by making the large
stackdepot allocation dynamic. The xfstest issues haven't been
reproduced on current kernel locally nor in -next, so the slab cache
layout changes that originally made that bug manifest were probably
   not the root cause.

 - Refactoring of dma-kmalloc caches creation.

 - Trivial cleanups such as removal of unused parameters, fixes and
   clarifications of comments.

2dfe63e61c mm, kfence: support kmem_dump_obj() for KFENCE objects
Calling kmem_obj_info() via kmem_dump_obj() on KFENCE objects has been
producing garbage data due to the object not actually being maintained
by SLAB or SLUB.

Fix this by implementing __kfence_obj_info() that copies relevant
information to struct kmem_obj_info when the object was allocated by
KFENCE; this is called by a common kmem_obj_info(), which also calls the
slab/slub/slob specific variant now called __kmem_obj_info().

For completeness, kmem_dump_obj() now displays if the object was
allocated by KFENCE.

88f2ef73fd mm: introduce kmem_cache_alloc_lru
We currently allocate scope for every memcg to be able to tracked on
every superblock instantiated in the system, regardless of whether that
superblock is even accessible to that memcg.

These huge memcg counts come from container hosts where memcgs are
confined to just a small subset of the total number of superblocks that
instantiated at any given point in time.

For these systems with huge container counts, list_lru does not need the
capability of tracking every memcg on every superblock. What it comes
down to is that adding the memcg to the list_lru at the first insert.
So introduce kmem_cache_alloc_lru to allocate objects and its list_lru.
In the later patch, we will convert all inode and dentry allocation from
kmem_cache_alloc to kmem_cache_alloc_lru.

c29b5b3d33 mm: slab: make slab iterator functions static
There is no external users of slab_start/next/stop(), so make them
static. And the memory.kmem.slabinfo is deprecated, which outputs
nothing now, so move memcg_slab_show() into mm/memcontrol.c and rename
it to mem_cgroup_slab_show to be consistent with other function names.

b01af5c0b0 mm/slob: Remove unnecessary page_mapcount_reset() function call
After commit 401fb12c68 ("mm/sl*b: Differentiate struct slab fields by
sl*b implementations"), we can reorder fields of struct slab depending
on slab allocator.

For now, page_mapcount_reset() is called because page->_mapcount and
slab->units have same offset. But this is not necessary for struct slab.
Use unused field for units instead.

9c01e9af17 mm/slub: Define struct slab fields for CONFIG_SLUB_CPU_PARTIAL only when enabled
The fields 'next' and 'slabs' are only used when CONFIG_SLUB_CPU_PARTIAL
is enabled. We can put their definition to #ifdef to prevent accidental
use when disabled.

Currenlty show_slab_objects() and slabs_cpu_partial_show() contain code
accessing the slabs field that's effectively dead with
CONFIG_SLUB_CPU_PARTIAL=n through the wrappers slub_percpu_partial() and
slub_percpu_partial_read_once(), but to prevent a compile error, we need
to hide all this code behind #ifdef.

662188c3a2 mm/slub: Simplify struct slab slabs field definition
Before commit b47291ef02 ("mm, slub: change percpu partial accounting
from objects to pages") we had to fit two integer fields into a native
word size, so we used short int on 32-bit and int on 64-bit via #ifdef.
After that commit there is only one integer field, so we can simply
define it as int everywhere.

401fb12c68 mm/sl*b: Differentiate struct slab fields by sl*b implementations
With a struct slab definition separate from struct page, we can go
further and define only fields that the chosen sl*b implementation uses.
This means everything between __page_flags and __page_refcount
placeholders now depends on the chosen CONFIG_SL*B. Some fields exist in
all implementations (slab_list) but can be part of a union in some, so
it's simpler to repeat them than complicate the definition with ifdefs
even more.

The patch doesn't change physical offsets of the fields, although it
could be done later - for example it's now clear that tighter packing in
SLOB could be possible.

This should also prevent accidental use of fields that don't exist in
given implementation. Before this patch virt_to_cache() and
cache_from_obj() were visible for SLOB (albeit not used), although they
rely on the slab_cache field that isn't set by SLOB. With this patch
it's now a compile error, so these functions are now hidden behind
an #ifndef CONFIG_SLOB.

4b5f8d9a89 mm/memcg: Convert slab objcgs from struct page to struct slab
page->memcg_data is used with MEMCG_DATA_OBJCGS flag only for slab pages
so convert all the related infrastructure to struct slab. Also use
struct folio instead of struct page when resolving object pointers.

This is not just mechanistic changing of types and names. Now in
mem_cgroup_from_obj() we use folio_test_slab() to decide if we interpret
the folio as a real slab instead of a large kmalloc, instead of relying
on MEMCG_DATA_OBJCGS bit that used to be checked in page_objcgs_check().
Similarly in memcg_slab_free_hook() where we can encounter
kmalloc_large() pages (here the folio slab flag check is implied by
virt_to_slab()). As a result, page_objcgs_check() can be dropped instead
of converted.

To avoid include cycles, move the inline definition of slab_objcgs()
from memcontrol.h to mm/slab.h.

41eb5df1cb mm: memcg/slab: properly set up gfp flags for objcg pointer array
Patch series "mm: memcg/slab: Fix objcg pointer array handling problem", v4.

Since the merging of the new slab memory controller in v5.9, the page
structure stores a pointer to objcg pointer array for slab pages. When
the slab has no used objects, it can be freed in free_slab() which will
call kfree() to free the objcg pointer array in
memcg_alloc_page_obj_cgroups(). If it happens that the objcg pointer
array is the last used object in its slab, that slab may then be freed
which may caused kfree() to be called again.

With the right workload, the slab cache may be set up in a way that allows
the recursive kfree() calling loop to nest deep enough to cause a kernel
stack overflow and panic the system. In fact, we have a reproducer that
can cause kernel stack overflow on a s390 system involving kmalloc-rcl-256
and kmalloc-rcl-128 slabs with the following kfree() loop recursively
called 74 times:

  [ 285.520739] [<000000000ec432fc>] kfree+0x4bc/0x560 [ 285.520740]
[<000000000ec43466>] __free_slab+0xc6/0x228 [ 285.520741]
[<000000000ec41fc2>] __slab_free+0x3c2/0x3e0 [ 285.520742]
[<000000000ec432fc>] kfree+0x4bc/0x560 : While investigating this issue, I
also found an issue on the allocation side. If the objcg pointer array
happen to come from the same slab or a circular dependency linkage is
formed with multiple slabs, those affected slabs can never be freed again.

This patch series addresses these two issues by introducing a new set of
kmalloc-cg-<n> caches split from kmalloc-<n> caches. The new set will
only contain non-reclaimable and non-dma objects that are accounted in
memory cgroups whereas the old set are now for unaccounted objects only.
By making this split, all the objcg pointer arrays will come from the
kmalloc-<n> caches, but those caches will never hold any objcg pointer
array. As a result, deeply nested kfree() call and the unfreeable slab
problems are now gone.

This patch (of 4):

Since the merging of the new slab memory controller in v5.9, the page
structure may store a pointer to obj_cgroup pointer array for slab pages.
Currently, only the __GFP_ACCOUNT bit is masked off. However, the array
is not readily reclaimable and doesn't need to come from the DMA buffer.
So those GFP bits should be masked off as well.

Do the flag bit clearing at memcg_alloc_page_obj_cgroups() to make sure
that it is consistently applied no matter where it is called.

fdbcb2a6d6 mm/memcg: move mod_objcg_state() to memcontrol.c
Patch series "mm/memcg: Reduce kmemcache memory accounting overhead", v6.

With the recent introduction of the new slab memory controller, we
eliminate the need for having separate kmemcaches for each memory cgroup
and reduce overall kernel memory usage. However, we also add additional
memory accounting overhead to each call of kmem_cache_alloc() and
kmem_cache_free().

For workloads that require a lot of kmemcache allocations and
de-allocations, they may experience performance regression as illustrated
in [1] and [2].

A simple kernel module that performs repeated loop of 100,000,000
kmem_cache_alloc() and kmem_cache_free() of either a small 32-byte object
or a big 4k object at module init time with a batch size of 4 (4 kmalloc's
followed by 4 kfree's) is used for benchmarking. The benchmarking tool
was run on a kernel based on linux-next-20210419. The test was run on a
CascadeLake server with turbo-boosting disable to reduce run-to-run
variation.

The small object test exercises mainly the object stock charging and
vmstat update code paths. The large object test also exercises the
refill_obj_stock() and __memcg_kmem_charge()/__memcg_kmem_uncharge() code
paths.

With memory accounting disabled, the run time was 3.130s with both small
object big object tests.

With memory accounting enabled, both cgroup v1 and v2 showed similar
results in the small object test. The performance results of the large
object test, however, differed between cgroup v1 and v2.

The execution times with the application of various patches in the
patchset were:

Patch 2 (vmstat data stock caching) helps in both the small object test
and the large v2 object test. It doesn't help much in v1 big object test.

Patch 3 (refill_obj_stock improvement) does help the small object test
but offer significant performance improvement for the large object test
(both v1 and v2).

Patch 4 (eliminating irq disable/enable) helps in all test cases.

To test for the extreme case, a multi-threaded kmalloc/kfree
microbenchmark was run on the 2-socket 48-core 96-thread system with
96 testing threads in the same memcg doing kmalloc+kfree of a 4k object
with accounting enabled for 10s. The total number of kmalloc+kfree done
in kilo operations per second (kops/s) were as follows:

  Applied patches v1 kops/s v1 change v2 kops/s v2 change
  --------------- --------- --------- --------- ---------
       None 3,520 1.00X 6,242 1.00X
        1-2 4,304 1.22X 8,478 1.36X
        1-3 4,731 1.34X 418,142 66.99X
        1-4 4,587 1.30X 438,838 70.30X

With memory accounting disabled, the kmalloc/kfree rate was 1,481,291
kop/s. This test shows how significant the memory accouting overhead
can be in some extreme situations.

For this multithreaded test, the improvement from patch 2 mainly
comes from the conditional atomic xchg of objcg->nr_charged_bytes in
mod_objcg_state(). By using an unconditional xchg, the operation rates
were similar to the unpatched kernel.

Patch 3 elminates the single highly contended cacheline of
objcg->nr_charged_bytes for cgroup v2 leading to a huge performance
improvement. Cgroup v1, however, still has another highly contended
cacheline in the shared page counter &memcg->kmem. So the improvement
is only modest.

Patch 4 helps in cgroup v2, but performs worse in cgroup v1 as
eliminating the irq_disable/irq_enable overhead seems to aggravate the
cacheline contention.

This patch (of 4):

mod_objcg_state() is moved from mm/slab.h to mm/memcontrol.c so that
further optimization can be done to it in later patches without exposing
unnecessary details to other mm components.

64dd68497b mm: slub: move sysfs slab alloc/free interfaces to debugfs
alloc_calls and free_calls implementation in sysfs have two issues, one is
PAGE_SIZE limitation of sysfs and other is it does not adhere to "one
value per file" rule.

To overcome this issues, move the alloc_calls and free_calls
implementation to debugfs.

Debugfs cache will be created if SLAB_STORE_USER flag is set.

Rename the alloc_calls/free_calls to alloc_traces/free_traces, to be
inline with what it does.
