MediaTek found an issue with display HW registers configuration, and
located the reason in the CMDQ Mailbox driver; reporting the original
comment with the analysis of this problem by Jason-JH Lin:
GCE should config HW in every vblanking duration.
The stream done event is the start signal of vblanking.
If stream done event is sent between GCE clk_disable
and clk_enable. After GCE clk_enable the stream done event
may not appear immediately and have about 3us delay.
Normal case:
clk_disable -> get EventA -> clk_enable -> clear EventA
-> wait EventB -> get EventB -> config HW
Abnormal case:
clk_disable -> get EventA -> clk_enable -> EventA delay appear
-> clear EventA fail -> wait EventB but get EventA -> config HW
This abnormal case may configure display HW in the vactive or
non-vblanking duration.
From his analysis we get that the GCE may finish its event processing
after some amount of time (and not immediately after sending commands
to it); since the GCE is used for more than just display, and it gets
used frequently, solve this issue by implementing Runtime PM handlers
with autosuspend: this allows us to overcome to the remote processor
delay issues and reduce the clock enable()/disable() calls, while also
still managing to save some power, which is something that we wouldn't
be able to do if we just enable the GCE clocks at probe.
Speaking of which: if Runtime PM is not available there will obviously
be no way to get this power saving action so, in this case, the clocks
will be enabled at probe() time, kept enabled for the entire driver's
life and disabled at remove().

The Message Unit(MU) General Purpose Control registers are used for
TX doorbell, but there is no hardware ACK support.
The current TX doorbell channel is using tasklet to emulate hardware
ACK support to kick the TX tick from controller driver side.

Prepare for the coming implementation by GCC and Clang of the __counted_by
attribute. Flexible array members annotated with __counted_by can have
their accesses bounds-checked at run-time checking via CONFIG_UBSAN_BOUNDS
(for array indexing) and CONFIG_FORTIFY_SOURCE (for strcpy/memcpy-family
functions).
As found with Coccinelle[1], add __counted_by for struct zynqmp_ipi_pdata.

If the platform acknowledge interrupt is level triggered, then it can
be shared by multiple subspaces provided each one has a unique platform
interrupt ack preserve and ack set masks.
If it can be shared, then we can request the irq with IRQF_SHARED and
IRQF_ONESHOT flags. The first one indicating it can be shared and the
latter one to keep the interrupt disabled until the hardirq handler
finished.
Further, since there is no way to detect if the interrupt is for a given
channel as the interrupt ack preserve and ack set masks are for clearing
the interrupt and not for reading the status(in case Irq Ack register
may be write-only on some platforms), we need a way to identify if the
given channel is in use and expecting the interrupt.
PCC type0, type1 and type5 do not support shared level triggered interrupt.
The methods of determining whether a given channel for remaining types
should respond to an interrupt are as follows:
- type2: Whether the interrupt belongs to a given channel is only
determined by the status field in Generic Communications Channel
Shared Memory Region, which is done in rx_callback of PCC client.
- type3: This channel checks chan_in_use flag first and then checks the
command complete bit(value '1' indicates that the command has
been completed).
- type4: Platform ensure that the default value of the command complete
bit corresponding to the type4 channel is '1'. This command
complete bit is '0' when receive a platform notification.
The new field, 'chan_in_use' is used by the type only support the
communication from OSPM to Platform (like type3) and should be completely
ignored by other types so as to avoid too many type unnecessary checks in
IRQ handler.

Currently, PCC driver doesn't support the processing of platform
notification for type 4 PCC subspaces.
According to ACPI specification, if platform sends a notification
to OSPM, it must clear the command complete bit and trigger platform
interrupt. OSPM needs to check whether the command complete bit is
cleared, clear platform interrupt, process command, and then set the
command complete and ring doorbell to the Platform.
Let us stash the value of the pcc type and use the same while processing
the interrupt of the channel. We also need to set the command complete
bit and ring doorbell in the interrupt handler for the type 4 channel to
complete the communication flow after processing the notification from
the Platform.

The DT of_device.h and of_platform.h date back to the separate
of_platform_bus_type before it as merged into the regular platform bus.
As part of that merge prepping Arm DT support 13 years ago, they
"temporarily" include each other. They also include platform_device.h
and of.h. As a result, there's a pretty much random mix of those include
files used throughout the tree. In order to detangle these headers and
replace the implicit includes with struct declarations, users need to
explicitly include the correct includes.

Sec proxy/message manager data buffer is 60 bytes with the last of the
registers indicating transmission completion. This however poses a bit
of a challenge.
The backing memory for sec_proxy / message manager is regular memory,
and all sec proxy does is to trigger a burst of all 60 bytes of data
over to the target thread backing ring accelerator. It doesn't do a
memory scrub when it moves data out in the burst. When we transmit
multiple messages, remnants of previous message is also transmitted
which results in some random data being set in TISCI fields of
messages that have been expanded forward.
The entire concept of backward compatibility hinges on the fact that
the unused message fields remain 0x0 allowing for 0x0 value to be
specially considered when backward compatibility of message extension
is done.
So, instead of just writing the completion register, we continue
to fill the message buffer up with 0x0 (note: for partial message
involving completion, we already do this).
This allows us to scale and introduce ABI changes back also work with
other boot stages that may have left data in the internal memory.
While at this, be consistent and explicit with the data_reg pointer
increment.

The summary of the changes for this pull requests is:
* Song Liu's new struct module_memory replacement
* Nick Alcock's MODULE_LICENSE() removal for non-modules
* My cleanups and enhancements to reduce the areas where we vmalloc
module memory for duplicates, and the respective debug code which
proves the remaining vmalloc pressure comes from userspace.
Most of the changes have been in linux-next for quite some time except
the minor fixes I made to check if a module was already loaded
prior to allocating the final module memory with vmalloc and the
respective debug code it introduces to help clarify the issue. Although
the functional change is small it is rather safe as it can only *help*
reduce vmalloc space for duplicates and is confirmed to fix a bootup
issue with over 400 CPUs with KASAN enabled. I don't expect stable
kernels to pick up that fix as the cleanups would have also had to have
been picked up. Folks on larger CPU systems with modules will want to
just upgrade if vmalloc space has been an issue on bootup.
Given the size of this request, here's some more elaborate details
on this pull request.
The functional change change in this pull request is the very first
patch from Song Liu which replaces the struct module_layout with a new
struct module memory. The old data structure tried to put together all
types of supported module memory types in one data structure, the new
one abstracts the differences in memory types in a module to allow each
one to provide their own set of details. This paves the way in the
future so we can deal with them in a cleaner way. If you look at changes
they also provide a nice cleanup of how we handle these different memory
areas in a module. This change has been in linux-next since before the
merge window opened for v6.3 so to provide more than a full kernel cycle
of testing. It's a good thing as quite a bit of fixes have been found
for it.
Jason Baron then made dynamic debug a first class citizen module user by
using module notifier callbacks to allocate / remove module specific
dynamic debug information.
Nick Alcock has done quite a bit of work cross-tree to remove module
license tags from things which cannot possibly be module at my request
so to:
a) help him with his longer term tooling goals which require a
deterministic evaluation if a piece a symbol code could ever be
part of a module or not. But quite recently it is has been made
clear that tooling is not the only one that would benefit.
Disambiguating symbols also helps efforts such as live patching,
kprobes and BPF, but for other reasons and R&D on this area
is active with no clear solution in sight.
b) help us inch closer to the now generally accepted long term goal
of automating all the MODULE_LICENSE() tags from SPDX license tags
In so far as a) is concerned, although module license tags are a no-op
for non-modules, tools which would want create a mapping of possible
modules can only rely on the module license tag after the commit
8b41fc4454 ("kbuild: create modules.builtin without Makefile.modbuiltin
or tristate.conf"). Nick has been working on this *for years* and
AFAICT I was the only one to suggest two alternatives to this approach
for tooling. The complexity in one of my suggested approaches lies in
that we'd need a possible-obj-m and a could-be-module which would check
if the object being built is part of any kconfig build which could ever
lead to it being part of a module, and if so define a new define
-DPOSSIBLE_MODULE [0]. A more obvious yet theoretical approach I've
suggested would be to have a tristate in kconfig imply the same new
-DPOSSIBLE_MODULE as well but that means getting kconfig symbol names
mapping to modules always, and I don't think that's the case today. I am
not aware of Nick or anyone exploring either of these options. Quite
recently Josh Poimboeuf has pointed out that live patching, kprobes and
BPF would benefit from resolving some part of the disambiguation as
well but for other reasons. The function granularity KASLR (fgkaslr)
patches were mentioned but Joe Lawrence has clarified this effort has
been dropped with no clear solution in sight [1].
In the meantime removing module license tags from code which could never
be modules is welcomed for both objectives mentioned above. Some
developers have also welcomed these changes as it has helped clarify
when a module was never possible and they forgot to clean this up,
and so you'll see quite a bit of Nick's patches in other pull
requests for this merge window. I just picked up the stragglers after
rc3. LWN has good coverage on the motivation behind this work [2] and
the typical cross-tree issues he ran into along the way. The only
concrete blocker issue he ran into was that we should not remove the
MODULE_LICENSE() tags from files which have no SPDX tags yet, even if
they can never be modules. Nick ended up giving up on his efforts due
to having to do this vetting and backlash he ran into from folks who
really did *not understand* the core of the issue nor were providing
any alternative / guidance. I've gone through his changes and dropped
the patches which dropped the module license tags where an SPDX
license tag was missing, it only consisted of 11 drivers. To see
if a pull request deals with a file which lacks SPDX tags you
can just use:
./scripts/spdxcheck.py -f \
$(git diff --name-only commid-id | xargs echo)
You'll see a core module file in this pull request for the above,
but that's not related to his changes. WE just need to add the SPDX
license tag for the kernel/module/kmod.c file in the future but
it demonstrates the effectiveness of the script.
Most of Nick's changes were spread out through different trees,
and I just picked up the slack after rc3 for the last kernel was out.
Those changes have been in linux-next for over two weeks.
The cleanups, debug code I added and final fix I added for modules
were motivated by David Hildenbrand's report of boot failing on
a systems with over 400 CPUs when KASAN was enabled due to running
out of virtual memory space. Although the functional change only
consists of 3 lines in the patch "module: avoid allocation if module is
already present and ready", proving that this was the best we can
do on the modules side took quite a bit of effort and new debug code.
The initial cleanups I did on the modules side of things has been
in linux-next since around rc3 of the last kernel, the actual final
fix for and debug code however have only been in linux-next for about a
week or so but I think it is worth getting that code in for this merge
window as it does help fix / prove / evaluate the issues reported
with larger number of CPUs. Userspace is not yet fixed as it is taking
a bit of time for folks to understand the crux of the issue and find a
proper resolution. Worst come to worst, I have a kludge-of-concept [3]
of how to make kernel_read*() calls for modules unique / converge them,
but I'm currently inclined to just see if userspace can fix this
instead.

Merge tag 'modules-6.4-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/mcgrof/linux
Pull module updates from Luis Chamberlain:
"The summary of the changes for this pull requests is:
- Song Liu's new struct module_memory replacement
- Nick Alcock's MODULE_LICENSE() removal for non-modules
- My cleanups and enhancements to reduce the areas where we vmalloc
module memory for duplicates, and the respective debug code which
proves the remaining vmalloc pressure comes from userspace.
Most of the changes have been in linux-next for quite some time except
the minor fixes I made to check if a module was already loaded prior
to allocating the final module memory with vmalloc and the respective
debug code it introduces to help clarify the issue. Although the
functional change is small it is rather safe as it can only *help*
reduce vmalloc space for duplicates and is confirmed to fix a bootup
issue with over 400 CPUs with KASAN enabled. I don't expect stable
kernels to pick up that fix as the cleanups would have also had to
have been picked up. Folks on larger CPU systems with modules will
want to just upgrade if vmalloc space has been an issue on bootup.
Given the size of this request, here's some more elaborate details:
The functional change change in this pull request is the very first
patch from Song Liu which replaces the 'struct module_layout' with a
new 'struct module_memory'. The old data structure tried to put
together all types of supported module memory types in one data
structure, the new one abstracts the differences in memory types in a
module to allow each one to provide their own set of details. This
paves the way in the future so we can deal with them in a cleaner way.
If you look at changes they also provide a nice cleanup of how we
handle these different memory areas in a module. This change has been
in linux-next since before the merge window opened for v6.3 so to
provide more than a full kernel cycle of testing. It's a good thing as
quite a bit of fixes have been found for it.
Jason Baron then made dynamic debug a first class citizen module user
by using module notifier callbacks to allocate / remove module
specific dynamic debug information.
Disambiguating symbols also helps efforts such as live patching,
kprobes and BPF, but for other reasons and R&D on this area is
active with no clear solution in sight.
b) help us inch closer to the now generally accepted long term goal
of automating all the MODULE_LICENSE() tags from SPDX license tags
In so far as a) is concerned, although module license tags are a no-op
for non-modules, tools which would want create a mapping of possible
modules can only rely on the module license tag after the commit
8b41fc4454 ("kbuild: create modules.builtin without
Makefile.modbuiltin or tristate.conf").
Nick has been working on this *for years* and AFAICT I was the only
one to suggest two alternatives to this approach for tooling. The
complexity in one of my suggested approaches lies in that we'd need a
possible-obj-m and a could-be-module which would check if the object
being built is part of any kconfig build which could ever lead to it
being part of a module, and if so define a new define
-DPOSSIBLE_MODULE [0].
A more obvious yet theoretical approach I've suggested would be to
have a tristate in kconfig imply the same new -DPOSSIBLE_MODULE as
well but that means getting kconfig symbol names mapping to modules
always, and I don't think that's the case today. I am not aware of
Nick or anyone exploring either of these options. Quite recently Josh
Poimboeuf has pointed out that live patching, kprobes and BPF would
benefit from resolving some part of the disambiguation as well but for
other reasons. The function granularity KASLR (fgkaslr) patches were
mentioned but Joe Lawrence has clarified this effort has been dropped
with no clear solution in sight [1].
In the meantime removing module license tags from code which could
never be modules is welcomed for both objectives mentioned above. Some
developers have also welcomed these changes as it has helped clarify
when a module was never possible and they forgot to clean this up, and
so you'll see quite a bit of Nick's patches in other pull requests for
this merge window. I just picked up the stragglers after rc3. LWN has
good coverage on the motivation behind this work [2] and the typical
cross-tree issues he ran into along the way. The only concrete blocker
issue he ran into was that we should not remove the MODULE_LICENSE()
tags from files which have no SPDX tags yet, even if they can never be
modules. Nick ended up giving up on his efforts due to having to do
this vetting and backlash he ran into from folks who really did *not
understand* the core of the issue nor were providing any alternative /
guidance. I've gone through his changes and dropped the patches which
dropped the module license tags where an SPDX license tag was missing,
it only consisted of 11 drivers. To see if a pull request deals with a
file which lacks SPDX tags you can just use:
./scripts/spdxcheck.py -f \
$(git diff --name-only commid-id | xargs echo)
You'll see a core module file in this pull request for the above, but
that's not related to his changes. WE just need to add the SPDX
license tag for the kernel/module/kmod.c file in the future but it
demonstrates the effectiveness of the script.
Most of Nick's changes were spread out through different trees, and I
just picked up the slack after rc3 for the last kernel was out. Those
changes have been in linux-next for over two weeks.
The cleanups, debug code I added and final fix I added for modules
were motivated by David Hildenbrand's report of boot failing on a
systems with over 400 CPUs when KASAN was enabled due to running out
of virtual memory space. Although the functional change only consists
of 3 lines in the patch "module: avoid allocation if module is already
present and ready", proving that this was the best we can do on the
modules side took quite a bit of effort and new debug code.
The initial cleanups I did on the modules side of things has been in
linux-next since around rc3 of the last kernel, the actual final fix
for and debug code however have only been in linux-next for about a
week or so but I think it is worth getting that code in for this merge

Use generic mbox_bind_client() to bind omap mailbox channel to a client.
mbox_bind_client is identical to the replaced lines, except that it:
- Does the operation under con_mutex which prevents possible races in
removal path
- Sets TXDONE_BY_ACK if pcc uses TXDONE_BY_POLL and the client knows
when tx is done. TXDONE_BY_ACK is already set if there's no interrupt,
so this is not applicable.
- Calls chan->mbox->ops->startup. This is usecase for requesting irq:

Since commit 8b41fc4454 ("kbuild: create modules.builtin without
Makefile.modbuiltin or tristate.conf"), MODULE_LICENSE declarations
are used to identify modules. As a consequence, uses of the macro
in non-modules will cause modprobe to misidentify their containing
object file as a module when it is not (false positives), and modprobe
might succeed rather than failing with a suitable error message.
So remove it in the files in this commit, none of which can be built as
modules.

Services are supposed to generate an interrupt once completed, whether
or not they have do so successfully. What appears to be a bug in the
system controller means that interrupts are only generated for
*successful* services.
Currently, the status of a service is only checked in the
mpfs_mbox_rx_data() once an interrupt is received. As it turns out, this
is not really helpful where the potentially buggy behaviour is present,
as we'll only see the status for successes where it is moot anyway.
Jassi suggested moving the check to the .tx_done() callback instead.
This makes sense, as the busy bit that tx_done() is polling will be
lowered on completion, regardless of whether the service passed or
failed.
That allows us to check the status bits for all services, whether they
generate an interrupt or not & pass something more informative than
-EBADMSG back to the drivers implementing individual services.

The system controller on PolarFire SoC has no interrupt to signify that

will be no interrupt delivered.

It probably should have been immediately obvious when it was pointed

If device_register() fails, it has two issues:
1. The name allocated by dev_set_name() is leaked.
2. The parent of device is not NULL, device_unregister() is called
in zynqmp_ipi_free_mboxes(), it will lead a kernel crash because
of removing not added device.
Call put_device() to give up the reference, so the name is freed in
kobject_cleanup(). Add device registered check in zynqmp_ipi_free_mboxes()

Copying platform data to struct cmdq serves to no purpose, as that

storing a pointer to gce_plat in gce and.
Remove all duplicated `struct gce_plat` members from `struct gce`

Some services explicitly return an error code in their response, but
others rely on the system controller to set a status in its status
register. The meaning of the bits varies based on what service is
requested, so pass it back up to the driver that requested the service
in the first place. The field in the message struct already existed, but
was unused until now.
If the system controller is busy, in which case we should never actually
be in the interrupt handler, or if the service fails the mailbox itself
should not be read. Callers should check the status before operating on
the response.
There's an existing, but unused, #define for the mailbox mask - but it
was incorrect. It was doing a GENMASK_ULL(32, 16) which should've just
been a GENMASK(31, 16), so fix that up and start using it.

NOIRQ_SYSTEM_SLEEP_PM_OPS directly so that qcom_ipcc_pm_resume() always
appears to be used to the compiler, even though it will be dead code
eliminated in the !CONFIG_PM_SLEEP case.

This reverts commit c7dacf5b0f,
"mailbox: avoid timer start from callback"
The previous commit was reverted since it lead to a race that
caused the hrtimer to not be started at all. The check for
hrtimer_active() in msg_submit() will return true if the
callback function txdone_hrtimer() is currently running. This
function could return HRTIMER_NORESTART and then the timer
will not be restarted, and also msg_submit() will not start
the timer. This will lead to a message actually being submitted
but no timer will start to check for its compleation.
The original fix that added checking hrtimer_active() was added to
avoid a warning with hrtimer_forward. Looking in the kernel
another solution to avoid this warning is to check hrtimer_is_queued()
before calling hrtimer_forward_now() instead. This however requires a
lock so the timer is not started by msg_submit() inbetween this check
and the hrtimer_forward() call.

Enable logging of the pending interrupt that triggered device wakeup. This
logging information helps to debug IRQs that cause periodic device wakeups
by printing the detailed information of pending IPCC interrupts.
Scenario: Device wakeup caused by Modem crash
Logs:
qcom-ipcc mailbox: virq: 182 triggered client-id: 2; signal-id: 2
From the IPCC bindings it can further be understood that the client here is
IPCC_CLIENT_MPSS and the signal was IPCC_MPROC_SIGNAL_SMP2P.

During the system suspend path we must set all queues to operate in
polled mode as it is possible for any protocol built using this mailbox,
such as TISCI, to require communication during the no irq phase of suspend,
and we cannot rely on interrupts there.
Polled mode is implemented by allowing the mailbox user to define an
RX channel as part of the message that is sent which is what gets polled
for a response. If polled mode is enabled, this will immediately be
polled for a response at the end of the mailbox send_data op before
returning success for the data send or timing out if no response is
received.
Finally, to ensure polled mode is always enabled during system suspend,
iterate through all queues to set RX queues to polled mode during system
suspend and disable polled mode for all in the resume handler.

i.MX8/8X SECO firmware IPC is an implementation of passing messages.
But current imx-mailbox driver only support one word message,
i.MX8/8X linux side firmware has to request four TX, four RX and a
TXDB to support IPC to SECO firmware. This is low efficent and
more interrupts triggered compared with one TX and one RX.
To make SECO MU work,
- parse the size of msg.
- Only enable TR0/RR0 interrupt for transmit/receive message.
- For TX/RX, only support one TX channel and one RX channel
- For RX, support receive msg of any size, limited by hardcoded value
of 30.

Mailbox driver needs to wait and read all the words in response to a
SCFW API call, else the protocol gets messed up and results in kernel hang.
When the responses are longer than 3 words its possible that SCFW will
take some time to fill up the rest of the words in the MU, a timeout of
100us is arbritrary and too short. While waiting for Linux to consume the
first 3 words of the response SCFW can be busy doing other stuff and hence
Linux needs to wait for the rest of the words.
Similar restriction applies when writing messages that are longer than
3 words.
This patch increases the timeout to 5secs while waiting for response
or writing long messages to SCFW.
