61742a7cd5 devres: Slightly optimize alloc_dr()
If the gfp flag used for the memory allocation already has __GFP_ZERO,
then there is no need to explicitly clear the "struct devres_node". It is
already zeroed.

This saves a few cycles when using devm_zalloc() and co.

In the case of devres_alloc() (which calls __devres_alloc_node()), the
compiler could remove the test and the memset() because it should be able
to see that the __GFP_ZERO flag is set.
So this would make the code both faster and smaller.

09705dcb63 devres: Enable trace events
In some cases the printf() mechanism is too heavy and can't be used.
For example, when debugging a race condition involving devres API.
When CONFIG_DEBUG_DEVRES is enabled I can't reproduce an issue, and
otherwise it's quite visible with a useful information being collected.

Enable trace events for devres part of the driver core.

2374b68225 drivers/base/devres: introduce devm_release_action()
Patch series "mm/devm_memremap_pages: Fix page release race", v2.

Logan audited the devm_memremap_pages() shutdown path and noticed that
it was possible to proceed to arch_remove_memory() before all potential
page references have been reaped.

Introduce a new ->cleanup() callback to do the work of waiting for any
straggling page references and then perform the percpu_ref_exit() in
devm_memremap_pages_release() context.

For p2pdma this involves some deeper reworks to reference count
resources on a per-instance basis rather than a per pci-device basis.  A
modified genalloc api is introduced to convey a driver-private pointer
through gen_pool_{alloc,free}() interfaces.  Also, a
devm_memunmap_pages() api is introduced since p2pdma does not
auto-release resources on a setup failure.

The dax and pmem changes pass the nvdimm unit tests, and the p2pdma
changes should now pass testing with the pci_p2pdma_release() fix.
Jrme, how does this look for HMM?

This patch (of 6):

The devm_add_action() facility allows a resource allocation routine to
add custom devm semantics. One such user is devm_memremap_pages().

There is now a need to manually trigger
devm_memremap_pages_release().  Introduce devm_release_action() so the
release action can be triggered via a new devm_memunmap_pages() api in a
follow-on change.

a66d972465 devres: Align data[] to ARCH_KMALLOC_MINALIGN
Initially we bumped into problem with 32-bit aligned atomic64_t
on ARC, see [1]. And then during quite lengthly discussion Peter Z.
mentioned ARCH_KMALLOC_MINALIGN which IMHO makes perfect sense.
If allocation is done by plain kmalloc() obtained buffer will be
ARCH_KMALLOC_MINALIGN aligned and then why buffer obtained via
devm_kmalloc() should have any other alignment?

This way we at least get the same behavior for both types of
allocation.

Now that the SPDX tag is in all driver core files, that identifies the

This is done on a quest to remove the 700+ different ways that files in

needed.

6fffcfa7c0 devres: restore zeroing behavior of devres_alloc()
commit 64c862a8 (devres: add kernel standard devm_k.alloc functions) changed
the default behavior of alloc_dr() to no longer zero the allocated memory. However,

64c862a839 devres: add kernel standard devm_k.alloc functions
Currently, devm_ managed memory only supports kzalloc.

Convert the devm_kzalloc implementation to devm_kmalloc and remove the
complete memset to 0 but still set the initial struct devres header and
whatever padding before data to 0.

Add the other normal alloc variants as static inlines with __GFP_ZERO
added to the gfp flag where appropriate:

	devm_kzalloc
	devm_kcalloc
	devm_kmalloc_array

Add gfp.h to device.h for the newly added static inlines.

akpm: the current API forces us to replace kmalloc() with kzalloc() when
performing devm_ conversions. This adds a relatively minor overhead.
More significantly, it will defeat kmemcheck used-uninitialized checking,
and for a particular driver, losing used-uninitialised checking for their
core controlling data structures will significantly degrade kmemcheck
usefulness.

but rather only removes the management of it. Make the documentation more
explicit.

86ec67fd0a base/devres.c: quiet sparse noise about context imbalance
devres_release_all and devres_release_group both aquire the lock
&dev->devres_lock but the release of that lock is done in release_nodes.
This results in sparse noise about context imbalance.

Add a lock annotation to release_nodes to quiet this noise.

5a0e3ad6af include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h
percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being
included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which
in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files
universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies.

percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for
this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those
headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion
needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is
used as the basis of conversion.

  http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py

The script does the followings.

* Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that
  only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used,
  gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h.

* When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include
  blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms
  to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains
  core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered -
  alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there
  doesn't seem to be any matching order.

* If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly
  because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out
  an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the
  file.

The conversion was done in the following steps.

1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly
   over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h
   and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400
   files.

2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion,
   some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or
   embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added
   inclusions to around 150 files.

3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits
   from #2 to make sure no file was left behind.

4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed.
   e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab
   APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually.

5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically
   editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h
   files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h
   inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually
   wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each
   slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as
   necessary.

6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h.

7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures
   were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my
   distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few
   more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things
   build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq).

   * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config.
   * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig
   * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig
   * ia64 SMP allmodconfig
   * s390 SMP allmodconfig
   * alpha SMP allmodconfig
   * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig

8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as
   a separate patch and serve as bisection point.

Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step
6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch.
If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch
headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of
the specific arch.

I just debugged an obscure crash caused by a device_del() of a all NULL'd

have saved me time (in addition to improved chances of a bug report from
users hitting similar driver bugs).

2a0134554e Driver core: fix devres_release_all() return value
Every file should include the headers containing the prototypes for
it's global functions.

Since the GNU C compiler is now able to detect that the function
prototype of devres_release_all() in the header and the actual function
disagree regarding the return value, this patch also fixes this bug.

9ac7849e35 devres: device resource management
Implement device resource management, in short, devres. A device
driver can allocate arbirary size of devres data which is associated
with a release function. On driver detach, release function is
invoked on the devres data, then, devres data is freed.

devreses are typed by associated release functions. Some devreses are
better represented by single instance of the type while others need
multiple instances sharing the same release function. Both usages are
supported.

devreses can be grouped using devres group such that a device driver
can easily release acquired resources halfway through initialization
or selectively release resources (e.g. resources for port 1 out of 4
ports).

This patch adds devres core including documentation and the following
managed interfaces.

* alloc/free	: devm_kzalloc(), devm_kzfree()
* IO region	: devm_request_region(), devm_release_region()
* IRQ		: devm_request_irq(), devm_free_irq()
* DMA		: dmam_alloc_coherent(), dmam_free_coherent(),
		  dmam_declare_coherent_memory(), dmam_pool_create(),
		  dmam_pool_destroy()
* PCI		: pcim_enable_device(), pcim_pin_device(), pci_is_managed()
* iomap		: devm_ioport_map(), devm_ioport_unmap(), devm_ioremap(),
		  devm_ioremap_nocache(), devm_iounmap(), pcim_iomap_table(),
		  pcim_iomap(), pcim_iounmap()
