Add a new API that returns a potentiall virtually non-contigous sg_table
and a DMA address. This API is only properly implemented for dma-iommu
and will simply return a contigious chunk as a fallback.
The intent is that drivers can use this API if either:
- no kernel mapping or only temporary kernel mappings are required.
That is as a better replacement for DMA_ATTR_NO_KERNEL_MAPPING
- a kernel mapping is required for cached and DMA mapped pages, but
the driver also needs the pages to e.g. map them to userspace.
In that sense it is a replacement for some aspects of the recently
removed and never fully implemented DMA_ATTR_NON_CONSISTENT

The size of the buffer being bounced is not checked if it happens
to be larger than the size of the mapped buffer. Because the size
can be controlled by a device, as it's the case with virtio devices,
this can lead to memory corruption.
This patch saves the remaining buffer memory for each slab and uses
that information for validation in the sync/unmap paths before
swiotlb_bounce is called.
Validating this argument is important under the threat models of
AMD SEV-SNP and Intel TDX, where the HV is considered untrusted.

Respect the min_align_mask in struct device_dma_parameters in swiotlb.
There are two parts to it:
1) for the lower bits of the alignment inside the io tlb slot, just
extent the size of the allocation and leave the start of the slot
empty
2) for the high bits ensure we find a slot that matches the high bits
of the alignment to avoid wasting too much memory

In a real dma mapping user case, after dma_map is done, data will be
transmit. Thus, in multi-threaded user scenario, IOMMU contention
should not be that severe. For example, if users enable multiple
threads to send network packets through 1G/10G/100Gbps NIC, usually
the steps will be: map -> transmission -> unmap. Transmission delay
reduces the contention of IOMMU.
Here a delay is added to simulate the transmission between map and unmap
so that the tested result could be more accurate for TX and simple RX.
A typical TX transmission for NIC would be like: map -> TX -> unmap
since the socket buffers come from OS. Simple RX model eg. disk driver,
is also map -> RX -> unmap, but real RX model in a NIC could be more
complicated considering packets can come spontaneously and many drivers
are using pre-mapped buffers pool. This is in the TBD list.

odd, this will cause trouble in the extension of the structure by adding
new features. This patch moves to use u8 for reserved field to avoid

Meanwhile, it also clears the memory of struct map_benchmark in tools,
otherwise, if users use old version to run on newer kernel, the random

For SEV, all DMA to and from guest has to use shared (un-encrypted) pages.
SEV uses SWIOTLB to make this happen without requiring changes to device
drivers. However, depending on the workload being run, the default 64MB
of it might not be enough and it may run out of buffers to use for DMA,
resulting in I/O errors and/or performance degradation for high
I/O workloads.
Adjust the default size of SWIOTLB for SEV guests using a
percentage of the total memory available to guest for the SWIOTLB buffers.
Adds a new sev_setup_arch() function which is invoked from setup_arch()

to do the SWIOTLB buffer adjustment.

Nowadays, there are increasing requirements to benchmark the performance
of dma_map and dma_unmap particually while the device is attached to an
IOMMU.
This patch enables the support. Users can run specified number of threads
to do dma_map_page and dma_unmap_page on a specific NUMA node with the
specified duration. Then dma_map_benchmark will calculate the average
latency for map and unmap.
A difficulity for this benchmark is that dma_map/unmap APIs must run on
a particular device. Each device might have different backend of IOMMU or
non-IOMMU.
So we use the driver_override to bind dma_map_benchmark to a particual
device by:
For platform devices:
echo dma_map_benchmark > /sys/bus/platform/devices/xxx/driver_override
echo xxx > /sys/bus/platform/drivers/xxx/unbind
echo xxx > /sys/bus/platform/drivers/dma_map_benchmark/bind
For PCI devices:
echo dma_map_benchmark > /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:00:01.0/driver_override
echo 0000:00:01.0 > /sys/bus/pci/drivers/xxx/unbind
echo 0000:00:01.0 > /sys/bus/pci/drivers/dma_map_benchmark/bind

At the moment we allow bypassing DMA ops only when we can do this for
the entire RAM. However there are configs with mixed type memory
where we could still allow bypassing IOMMU in most cases;
POWERPC with persistent memory is one example.
This adds an arch hook to determine where bypass can still work and
we invoke direct DMA API. The following patch checks the bus limit
on POWERPC to allow or disallow direct mapping.
This adds a ARCH_HAS_DMA_MAP_DIRECT config option to make the arch_xxxx
hooks no-op by default.

The tbl_dma_addr argument is used to check the DMA boundary for the

kernel/dma/swiotlb.c:swiotlb_init gets called first and tries to
allocate a buffer for the swiotlb. It does so by calling
memblock_alloc_low(PAGE_ALIGN(bytes), PAGE_SIZE);
If the allocation must fail, no_iotlb_memory is set.
Later during initialization swiotlb-xen comes in
(drivers/xen/swiotlb-xen.c:xen_swiotlb_init) and given that io_tlb_start
is != 0, it thinks the memory is ready to use when actually it is not.
When the swiotlb is actually needed, swiotlb_tbl_map_single gets called
and since no_iotlb_memory is set the kernel panics.
Instead, if swiotlb-xen.c:xen_swiotlb_init knew the swiotlb hadn't been
initialized, it would do the initialization itself, which might still
succeed.
Fix the panic by setting io_tlb_start to 0 on swiotlb initialization
failure, and also by setting no_iotlb_memory to false on swiotlb
initialization success.

The new field 'dma_range_map' in struct device is used to facilitate the
use of single or multiple offsets between mapping regions of cpu addrs and
dma addrs. It subsumes the role of "dev->dma_pfn_offset" which was only
capable of holding a single uniform offset and had no region bounds
checking.
The function of_dma_get_range() has been modified so that it takes a single
argument -- the device node -- and returns a map, NULL, or an error code.
The map is an array that holds the information regarding the DMA regions.
Each range entry contains the address offset, the cpu_start address, the
dma_start address, and the size of the region.
of_dma_configure() is the typical manner to set range offsets but there are
a number of ad hoc assignments to "dev->dma_pfn_offset" in the kernel
driver code. These cases now invoke the function
dma_direct_set_offset(dev, cpu_addr, dma_addr, size).

Right now, drivers like ARM SMMU are using dma_alloc_coherent() to get
coherent DMA buffers to save their command queues and page tables. As
there is only one default CMA in the whole system, SMMUs on nodes other
than node0 will get remote memory. This leads to significant latency.
This patch provides per-numa CMA so that drivers like SMMU can get local
memory. Tests show localizing CMA can decrease dma_unmap latency much.
For instance, before this patch, SMMU on node2 has to wait for more than
560ns for the completion of CMD_SYNC in an empty command queue; with this
patch, it needs 240ns only.
A positive side effect of this patch would be improving performance even
further for those users who are worried about performance more than DMA
security and use iommu.passthrough=1 to skip IOMMU. With local CMA, all
drivers can get local coherent DMA buffers.
Also, this patch changes the default CONFIG_CMA_AREAS to 19 in NUMA. As
1+CONFIG_CMA_AREAS should be quite enough for most servers on the market
even they enable both hugetlb_cma and pernuma_cma.
2 numa nodes: 2(hugetlb) + 2(pernuma) + 1(default global cma) = 5
4 numa nodes: 4(hugetlb) + 4(pernuma) + 1(default global cma) = 9

This remoes the code from the COW path to call debug_dma_assert_idle(),
which was added many years ago.
Google shows that it hasn't caught anything in the 6+ years we've had it
apart from a false positive, and Hugh just noticed how it had a very
unfortunate spinlock serialization in the COW path.
He fixed that issue the previous commit (a85ffd59bd: "dma-debug: fix
debug_dma_assert_idle(), use rcu_read_lock()"), but let's see if anybody
even notices when we remove this function entirely.
NOTE! We keep the dma tracking infrastructure that was added by the
commit that introduced it. Partly to make it easier to resurrect this
debug code if we ever deside to, and partly because that tracking by pfn
and offset looks quite reasonable.
The problem with this debug code was simply that it was expensive and
didn't seem worth it, not that it was wrong per se.

Since commit 2a9127fcf2 ("mm: rewrite wait_on_page_bit_common()
logic") improved unlock_page(), it has become more noticeable how
cow_user_page() in a kernel with CONFIG_DMA_API_DEBUG=y can create and
suffer from heavy contention on DMA debug's radix_lock in
debug_dma_assert_idle().
It is only doing a lookup: use rcu_read_lock() and rcu_read_unlock()
instead; though that does require the static ents[] to be moved
onstack...
...but, hold on, isn't that radix_tree_gang_lookup() and loop doing
quite the wrong thing: searching CACHELINES_PER_PAGE entries for an
exact match with the first cacheline of the page in question?
radix_tree_gang_lookup() is the right tool for the job, but we need
nothing more than to check the first entry it can find, reporting if
that falls anywhere within the page.
(Is RCU safe here? As safe as using the spinlock was. The entries are
never freed, so don't need to be freed by RCU. They may be reused, and
there is a faint chance of a race, with an offending entry reused while
printing its error info; but the spinlock did not prevent that either,
and I agree that it's not worth worrying about. ]
[ Side noe: this patch is a clear improvement to the status quo, but the
next patch will be removing this debug function entirely.
But just in case we decide we want to resurrect the debugging code
some day, I'm first applying this improvement patch so that it doesn't
get lost - Linus ]

dma-pool's dev_to_pool() creates the false impression that there is a
way to grantee a mapping between a device's DMA constraints and an
atomic pool. It tuns out it's just a guess, and the device might need to
use an atomic pool containing memory from a 'safer' (or lower) memory
zone.
To help mitigate this, introduce dma_guess_pool() which can be fed a
device's DMA constraints and atomic pools already known to be faulty, in

Replace the open coded instance of vmap with the actual function. In

When AMD memory encryption is enabled, some devices may use more than
256KB/sec from the atomic pools. It would be more appropriate to scale
the default size based on memory capacity unless the coherent_pool
option is used on the kernel command line.
This provides a slight optimization on initial expansion and is deemed
appropriate due to the increased reliance on the atomic pools. Note that
the default size of 128KB per pool will normally be larger than the
single coherent pool implementation since there are now up to three
coherent pools (DMA, DMA32, and kernel).
Note that even prior to this patch, coherent_pool= for sizes larger than
1 << (PAGE_SHIFT + MAX_ORDER-1) can fail. With new dynamic expansion
support, this would be trivially extensible to allow even larger initial
sizes.

The atomic DMA pools can dynamically expand based on non-blocking
allocations that need to use it.

When a device requires unencrypted memory and the context does not allow
blocking, memory must be returned from the atomic coherent pools.
This avoids the remap when CONFIG_DMA_DIRECT_REMAP is not enabled and the
config only requires CONFIG_DMA_COHERENT_POOL. This will be used for
CONFIG_AMD_MEM_ENCRYPT in a subsequent patch.
Keep all memory in these pools unencrypted. When set_memory_decrypted()
fails, this prohibits the memory from being added. If adding memory to
the genpool fails, and set_memory_encrypted() subsequently fails, there
is no alternative other than leaking the memory.

When an atomic pool becomes fully depleted because it is now relied upon
for all non-blocking allocations through the DMA API, allow background
expansion of each pool by a kworker.
When an atomic pool has less than the default size of memory left, kick
off a kworker to dynamically expand the pool in the background. The pool
is doubled in size, up to MAX_ORDER-1. If memory cannot be allocated at
the requested order, smaller allocation(s) are attempted.
This allows the default size to be kept quite low when one or more of the
atomic pools is not used.
Allocations for lowmem should also use GFP_KERNEL for the benefits of
reclaim, so use GFP_KERNEL | GFP_DMA and GFP_KERNEL | GFP_DMA32 for
lowmem allocations.
This also allows __dma_atomic_pool_init() to return a pointer to the pool
to make initialization cleaner.
Also switch over some node ids to the more appropriate NUMA_NO_NODE.

The single atomic pool is allocated from the lowest zone possible since
it is guaranteed to be applicable for any DMA allocation.
Devices may allocate through the DMA API but not have a strict reliance
on GFP_DMA memory. Since the atomic pool will be used for all
non-blockable allocations, returning all memory from ZONE_DMA may
unnecessarily deplete the zone.
Provision for multiple atomic pools that will map to the optimal gfp
mask of the device.
When allocating non-blockable memory, determine the optimal gfp mask of
the device and use the appropriate atomic pool.
The coherent DMA mask will remain the same between allocation and free
and, thus, memory will be freed to the same atomic pool it was allocated
from.
__dma_atomic_pool_init() will be changed to return struct gen_pool *
later once dynamic expansion is added.

DMA atomic pools will be needed beyond only CONFIG_DMA_DIRECT_REMAP so
separate them out into their own file.
This also adds a new Kconfig option that can be subsequently used for
options, such as CONFIG_AMD_MEM_ENCRYPT, that will utilize the coherent
pools but do not have a dependency on direct remapping.
For this patch alone, there is no functional change introduced.

that DMAs from that memory to read encrypted contents. Fix this.
When force_dma_unencrypted() returns true, the linear kernel map of the

page content is unencrypted. Make sure that any additional PTEs we set
up to these pages also have the encryption bit cleared by having
dma_pgprot() return a protection with the encryption bit cleared in this

based on the end pfn and optional magic that architectures can use

for bounce buffering. But between the DMA offsets that can change
per device (or sometimes even region), the fact the ZONE_DMA isn't
even guaranteed to be the lowest addresses and failure of having
proper interfaces to the MM code this fails at least for one
arm subarchitecture.
As all the legacy DMA implementations have supported 32-bit DMA
masks, and 32-bit masks are guranteed to always work by the API
contract (using bounce buffers if needed), we can short cut the
complicated check and always return true without breaking existing
assumptions. Hopefully we can properly clean up the interaction

Using a mask to represent bus DMA constraints has a set of limitations.
The biggest one being it can only hold a power of two (minus one). The
DMA mapping code is already aware of this and treats dev->bus_dma_mask
as a limit. This quirk is already used by some architectures although
still rare.
With the introduction of the Raspberry Pi 4 we've found a new contender
for the use of bus DMA limits, as its PCIe bus can only address the
lower 3GB of memory (of a total of 4GB). This is impossible to represent
with a mask. To make things worse the device-tree code rounds non power
of two bus DMA limits to the next power of two, which is unacceptable in
this case.
In the light of this, rename dev->bus_dma_mask to dev->bus_dma_limit all
over the tree and treat it as such. Note that dev->bus_dma_limit should
contain the higher accessible DMA address.

With modern NIC, it is not unusual having about ~256,000 active dma

Forcing full cache line per bucket does not seem useful, especially now
that we have contention on free_entries_lock for allocations and freeing
of entries. Better use the space to fit more buckets.

Integrate the generic dma remapping implementation into the main flow.
This prepares for architectures like xtensa that use an uncached
segment for pages in the kernel mapping, but can also remap highmem
from CMA. To simplify that implementation we now always deduct the
page from the physical address via the DMA address instead of the
virtual address.

non-coherent memory only if the architecture provides a way to set an
uncached bit in the page tables. This must be true for architectures
that use the generic remap helpers, but other architectures can also

Most dma_map_ops instances are IOMMUs that work perfectly fine in 32-bits
of IOVA space, and the generic direct mapping code already provides its
own routines that is intelligent based on the amount of memory actually
present. Wire up the dma-direct routine for the ARM direct mapping code
as well, and otherwise default to the constant 32-bit mask. This way
we only need to override it for the occasional odd IOMMU that requires
64-bit IOVA support, or IOMMU drivers that are more efficient if they
can fall back to the direct mapping.

All the way back to introducing dma_common_mmap we've defaulted to mark
the pages as uncached. But this is wrong for DMA coherent devices.
Later on DMA_ATTR_WRITE_COMBINE also got incorrect treatment as that

Introduce a new dma_pgprot helper that deals with the check for coherent
devices so that only the remapping cases ever reach arch_dma_mmap_pgprot
and we thus ensure no aliasing of page attributes happens, which makes
the powerpc version of arch_dma_mmap_pgprot obsolete and simplifies the

This fixes a cascade of regressions that originally started with
the addition of the ia64 port, but only got fatal once we removed
most uses of block layer bounce buffering in Linux 4.18.
The reason is that while the original i386/PAE code that was the first
architecture that supported > 4GB of memory without an iommu decided to
leave bounce buffering to the subsystems, which in those days just mean
block and networking as no one else consumer arbitrary userspace memory.
Later with ia64, x86_64 and other ports we assumed that either an iommu
or something that fakes it up ("software IOTLB" in beautiful Intel
speak) is present and that subsystems can rely on that for dealing with
addressing limitations in devices. Except that the ARM LPAE scheme
that added larger physical address to 32-bit ARM did not follow that
scheme and thus only worked by chance and only for block and networking
I/O directly to highmem.
Long story, short fix - add swiotlb support to arm when build for LPAE
platforms, which actuallys turns out to be pretty trivial with the
modern dma-direct / swiotlb code to fix the Linux 4.18-ish regression.

Merge tag 'arm-swiotlb-5.3' of git://git.infradead.org/users/hch/dma-mapping
Pull arm swiotlb support from Christoph Hellwig:
"This fixes a cascade of regressions that originally started with the
addition of the ia64 port, but only got fatal once we removed most
uses of block layer bounce buffering in Linux 4.18.
The reason is that while the original i386/PAE code that was the first
architecture that supported > 4GB of memory without an iommu decided
to leave bounce buffering to the subsystems, which in those days just
mean block and networking as no one else consumed arbitrary userspace
memory.
Later with ia64, x86_64 and other ports we assumed that either an
iommu or something that fakes it up ("software IOTLB" in beautiful
Intel speak) is present and that subsystems can rely on that for
dealing with addressing limitations in devices. Except that the ARM
LPAE scheme that added larger physical address to 32-bit ARM did not
follow that scheme and thus only worked by chance and only for block
and networking I/O directly to highmem.
Long story, short fix - add swiotlb support to arm when build for LPAE
platforms, which actuallys turns out to be pretty trivial with the
modern dma-direct / swiotlb code to fix the Linux 4.18-ish regression"

According to the original dma_direct_alloc_pages() code:
{
unsigned int count = PAGE_ALIGN(size) >> PAGE_SHIFT;
if (!dma_release_from_contiguous(dev, page, count))
__free_pages(page, get_order(size));
}
The count parameter for dma_release_from_contiguous() was page
aligned before the right-shifting operation, while the new API
dma_free_contiguous() forgets to have PAGE_ALIGN() at the size.
So this patch simply adds it to prevent any corner case.

The dma_alloc_contiguous() limits align at CONFIG_CMA_ALIGNMENT for
cma_alloc() however it does not restore it for the fallback routine.
This will result in a size mismatch between the allocation and free
when running into the fallback routines after cma_alloc() fails, if
the align is larger than CONFIG_CMA_ALIGNMENT.
This patch adds a cma_align to take care of cma_alloc() and prevent
the align from being overwritten.

If a device doesn't support DMA to a physical address that includes the
encryption bit (currently bit 47, so 48-bit DMA), then the DMA must
occur to unencrypted memory. SWIOTLB is used to satisfy that requirement
if an IOMMU is not active (enabled or configured in passthrough mode).
However, commit fafadcd165 ("swiotlb: don't dip into swiotlb pool for
coherent allocations") modified the coherent allocation support in
SWIOTLB to use the DMA direct coherent allocation support. When an IOMMU
is not active, this resulted in dma_alloc_coherent() failing for devices
that didn't support DMA addresses that included the encryption bit.
Addressing this requires changes to the force_dma_unencrypted() function
in kernel/dma/direct.c. Since the function is now non-trivial and
SME/SEV specific, update the DMA direct support to add an arch override
for the force_dma_unencrypted() function. The arch override is selected
when CONFIG_AMD_MEM_ENCRYPT is set. The arch override function resides in
the arch/x86/mm/mem_encrypt.c file and forces unencrypted DMA when either
SEV is active or SME is active and the device does not support DMA to
physical addresses that include the encryption bit.

Here is the "big" driver core and debugfs changes for 5.3-rc1
It's a lot of different patches, all across the tree due to some api
changes and lots of debugfs cleanups. Because of this, there is going
to be some merge issues with your tree at the moment, I'll follow up
with the expected resolutions to make it easier for you.
Other than the debugfs cleanups, in this set of changes we have:
- bus iteration function cleanups (will cause build warnings
with s390 and coresight drivers in your tree)
- scripts/get_abi.pl tool to display and parse Documentation/ABI
entries in a simple way
- cleanups to Documenatation/ABI/ entries to make them parse
easier due to typos and other minor things
- default_attrs use for some ktype users
- driver model documentation file conversions to .rst
- compressed firmware file loading
- deferred probe fixes
All of these have been in linux-next for a while, with a bunch of merge
issues that Stephen has been patient with me for. Other than the merge
issues, functionality is working properly in linux-next :)

The dma masks in struct device are always 64-bits wide. But for builds
using a 32-bit dma_addr_t we need to ensure we don't store an
unsupportable value. Before Linux 5.0 this was handled at least by
the ARM dma mapping code by never allowing to set a larger dma_mask,
but these days we allow the driver to just set the largest supported
value and never fall back to a smaller one. Ensure this always works
by truncating the value.
