Konrad writes:
It has the 'feature-max-indirect-segments' implemented in both backend
and frontend. The current problem with the backend and frontend is that the
segment size is limited to 11 pages. It means we can at most squeeze in 44kB per
request. The ring can hold 32 (next power of two below 36) requests, meaning we
can do 1.4M of outstanding requests. Nowadays that is not enough.
The problem in the past was addressed in two ways - but neither one went upstream.
The first solution to this proposed by Justin from Spectralogic was to negotiate
the segment size. This means that the ‘struct blkif_sring_entry’ is now a variable size.
It can expand from 112 bytes (cover 11 pages of data - 44kB) to 1580 bytes
(256 pages of data - so 1MB). It is a simple extension by just making the array in the
request expand from 11 to a variable size negotiated. But it had limits: this extension
still limits the number of segments per request to 255 (as the total number must be
specified in the request, which only has an 8-bit field for that purpose).
The other solution (from Intel - Ronghui) was to create one extra ring that only has the
‘struct blkif_request_segment’ in them. The ‘struct blkif_request’ would be changed to have
an index in said ‘segment ring’. There is only one segment ring. This means that the size of
the initial ring is still the same. The requests would point to the segment and enumerate out
how many of the indexes it wants to use. The limit is of course the size of the segment.
If one assumes a one-page segment this means we can in one request cover ~4MB.
Those patches were posted as RFC and the author never followed up on the ideas on changing
it to be a bit more flexible.
There is yet another mechanism that could be employed (which these patches implement) - and it
borrows from VirtIO protocol. And that is the ‘indirect descriptors’. This very similar to
what Intel suggests, but with a twist. The twist is to negotiate how many of these
'segment' pages (aka indirect descriptor pages) we want to support (in reality we negotiate
how many entries in the segment we want to cover, and we module the number if it is
bigger than the segment size).
This means that with the existing 36 slots in the ring (single page) we can cover:
32 slots * each blkif_request_indirect covers: 512 * 4096 ~= 64M. Since we ample space
in the blkif_request_indirect to span more than one indirect page, that number (64M)
can be also multiplied by eight = 512MB.
Roger Pau Monne took the idea and implemented them in these patches. They work
great and the corner cases (migration between backends with and without this extension)
work nicely. The backend has a limit right now off how many indirect entries
it can handle: one indirect page, and at maximum 256 entries (out of 512 - so 50% of the page
is used). That comes out to 32 slots * 256 entries in a indirect page * 1 indirect page
per request * 4096 = 32MB.
This is a conservative number that can change in the future. Right now it strikes
a good balance between giving excellent performance, memory usage in the backend, and
balancing the needs of many guests.
In the patchset there is also the split of the blkback structure to be per-VBD.
This means that the spinlock contention we had with many guests trying to do I/O and
all the blkback threads hitting the same lock has been eliminated.
Also there are bug-fixes to deal with oddly sized sectors, insane amounts on
th ring, and also a security fix (posted earlier).

This adds support for a generic reservations framework that can be
hooked up to ttm and dma-buf and allows easy sharing of reservations
across devices.
The idea is that a dma-buf and ttm object both will get a pointer
to a struct reservation_object, which has to be reserved before
anything is done with the contents of the dma-buf.
Changes since v1:
- Fix locking issue in ticket_reserve, which could cause mutex_unlock
to be called too many times.
Changes since v2:
- All fence related calls and members have been taken out for now,
what's left is the bare minimum to be useful for ttm locking conversion.
Changes since v3:
- Removed helper functions too. The documentation has an example
implementation for locking. With the move to ww_mutex there is no

changed the contents of the "related_cpus" sysfs attribute on systems
where acpi-cpufreq is used and user space can't get the list of CPUs
which are in the same hardware coordination CPU domain (provided by
the ACPI AML method _PSD) via "related_cpus" any more.
To make up for that loss add a new sysfs attribute "freqdomian_cpus"
for the acpi-cpufreq driver which exposes the list of CPUs in the

MD: Remember the last sync operation that was performed
This patch adds a field to the mddev structure to track the last
sync operation that was performed. This is especially useful when
it comes to what is recorded in mismatch_cnt in sysfs. If the
last operation was "data-check", then it reports the number of
descrepancies found by the user-initiated check. If it was a
"repair" operation, then it is reporting the number of
descrepancies repaired. etc.

Currently, we fail only when all of the ips in arp_ip_target are gone.
However, in some situations we might need to fail if even one host from
arp_ip_target becomes unavailable.
All situations, obviously, rely on the idea that we need *completely*
functional network, with all interfaces/addresses working correctly.
One real world example might be:
vlans on top on bond (hybrid port). If bond and vlans have ips assigned
and we have their peers monitored via arp_ip_target - in case of switch
misconfiguration (trunk/access port), slave driver malfunction or
tagged/untagged traffic dropped on the way - we will be able to switch
to another slave.
Though any other configuration needs that if we need to have access to all
arp_ip_targets.
This patch adds this possibility by adding a new parameter -
arp_all_targets (both as a module parameter and as a sysfs knob). It can be
set to:
0 or any (the default) - which works exactly as it's working now -
the slave is up if any of the arp_ip_targets are up.
1 or all - the slave is up if all of the arp_ip_targets are up.
This parameter can be changed on the fly (via sysfs), and requires the mode
to be active-backup and arp_validate to be enabled (it obeys the
arp_validate config on which slaves to validate).
Internally it's done through:
1) Add target_last_arp_rx[BOND_MAX_ARP_TARGETS] array to slave struct. It's
an array of jiffies, meaning that slave->target_last_arp_rx[i] is the
last time we've received arp from bond->params.arp_targets[i] on this
slave.
2) If we successfully validate an arp from bond->params.arp_targets[i] in
bond_validate_arp() - update the slave->target_last_arp_rx[i] with the
current jiffies value.
3) When getting slave's last_rx via slave_last_rx(), we return the oldest
time when we've received an arp from any address in
bond->params.arp_targets[].
If the value of arp_all_targets == 0 - we still work the same way as
before.
Also, update the documentation to reflect the new parameter.
v3->v4:
Kill the forgotten rtnl_unlock(), rephrase the documentation part to be
more clear, don't fail setting arp_all_targets if arp_validate is not set -
it has no effect anyway but can be easier to set up. Also, print a warning
if the last arp_ip_target is removed while the arp_interval is on, but not
the arp_validate.
v2->v3:
Use _bh spinlock, remove useless rtnl_lock() and use jiffies for new
arp_ip_target last arp, instead of slave_last_rx(). On bond_enslave(),
use the same initialization value for target_last_arp_rx[] as is used
for the default last_arp_rx, to avoid useless interface flaps.
Also, instead of failing to remove the last arp_ip_target just print a
warning - otherwise it might break existing scripts.
v1->v2:
Correctly handle adding/removing hosts in arp_ip_target - we need to
shift/initialize all slave's target_last_arp_rx. Also, don't fail module
loading on arp_all_targets misconfiguration, just disable it, and some
minor style fixes.

select/poll busy-poll support.
Split sysctl value into two separate ones, one for read and one for poll.
updated Documentation/sysctl/net.txt
Add a new poll flag POLL_LL. When this flag is set, sock_poll will call
sk_poll_ll if possible. sock_poll sets this flag in its return value
to indicate to select/poll when a socket that can busy poll is found.
When poll/select have nothing to report, call the low-level
sock_poll again until we are out of time or we find something.
Once the system call finds something, it stops setting POLL_LL, so it can
return the result to the user ASAP.

This patch add pinctrl support to ST SoCs.
About hardware:
ST Set-Top-Box parts have two blocks called PIO and PIO-mux which handle
pin configurations.
Each multi-function pin is controlled, driven and routed through the PIO
multiplexing block. Each pin supports GPIO functionality (ALT0) and
multiple alternate functions(ALT1 - ALTx) that directly connect the pin
to different hardware blocks. When a pin is in GPIO mode, Output Enable
(OE), Open Drain(OD), and Pull Up (PU) are driven by the related PIO
block. Otherwise the PIO multiplexing block configures these parameters
and retiming the signal.
About driver:
This pinctrl driver manages both PIO and PIO-mux block using pinctrl,
pinconf, pinmux, gpio subsystems. All the pinctrl related config
information can only come from device trees.

From the inception ot the pin config API there has been the
possibility to get a handle at a pin directly and configure
its electrical characteristics. For this reason we had:
int pin_config_get(const char *dev_name, const char *name,
unsigned long *config);
int pin_config_set(const char *dev_name, const char *name,
unsigned long config);
int pin_config_group_get(const char *dev_name,
const char *pin_group,
unsigned long *config);
int pin_config_group_set(const char *dev_name,
const char *pin_group,
unsigned long config);
After the introduction of the pin control states that will
control pins associated with devices, and its subsequent
introduction to the device core, as well as the
introduction of pin control hogs that can set up states on
boot and optionally also at sleep, this direct pin control
API is a thing of the past.
As could be expected, it has zero in-kernel users.
Let's delete this API and make our world simpler.

to the MCLK-to-LRCLK ratio. These pins have to be stable before the chip

This patch has been invaluable in my adventures finding
issues in the perf NMI handler. I'm as big a fan of
printk() as anybody is, but using printk() in NMIs is
deadly when they're happening frequently.
Even hacking in trace_printk() ended up eating enough
CPU to throw off some of the measurements I was making.

This patch keeps track of how long perf's NMI handler is taking,
and also calculates how many samples perf can take a second. If
the sample length times the expected max number of samples
exceeds a configurable threshold, it drops the sample rate.
This way, we don't have a runaway sampling process eating up the
CPU.
This patch can tend to drop the sample rate down to level where
perf doesn't work very well. *BUT* the alternative is that my
system hangs because it spends all of its time handling NMIs.
I'll take a busted performance tool over an entire system that's
busted and undebuggable any day.
BTW, my suspicion is that there's still an underlying bug here.
Using the HPET instead of the TSC is definitely a contributing
factor, but I suspect there are some other things going on.
But, I can't go dig down on a bug like that with my machine
hanging all the time.

This adds basic support for gate-clocks on Rockchip SoCs.
There are 16 gates in each register and use the HIWORD_MASK
mechanism for changing gate settings.
The gate registers form a continuos block which makes the dt node
structure a matter of taste, as either all 160 gates can be put into
one gate clock spanning all registers or they can be divided into
the 10 individual gates containing 16 clocks each.
The code supports both approaches.

The Nomadik clock implementation was a stub just using
fixed clocks.
This implements the clocks properly instead of relying
on them all being on at boot and leaving them all on.
The PLLs are on the top locking to the main chrystal
oscillator, then the HCLK for the peripherals are
below PLL2.
The gated clocks are implemented with zero cells and
given the clock ID as a property of each node, so every
gate need to have its own node in the device tree.
This is because the gate registers contain both HCLK
gates and PCLK gates, where the latter has HCLK as
parent. As can be seen from the register layout, this
is a complete mixup, which means all these gates need
their own node to properly model parent/child relations
for PCLKs apart from the HCLKs.
This driver also adds a helpful debugfs file to inspect
the hardware state of the clock gates.
This is the end result in <debugfs>/clk/clk_summary
after applying a proper device tree:

VFIO implements platform independent stuff such as
a PCI driver, BAR access (via read/write on a file descriptor
or direct mapping when possible) and IRQ signaling.
The platform dependent part includes IOMMU initialization
and handling. This implements an IOMMU driver for VFIO
which does mapping/unmapping pages for the guest IO and
provides information about DMA window (required by a POWER
guest).

Add a traceoff_on_warning option in both the kernel command line as well
as a sysctl option. When set, any WARN*() function that is hit will cause
the tracing_on variable to be cleared, which disables writing to the
ring buffer.
This is useful especially when tracing a bug with function tracing. When
a warning is hit, the print caused by the warning can flood the trace with
the functions that producing the output for the warning. This can make the
resulting trace useless by either hiding where the bug happened, or worse,
by overflowing the buffer and losing the trace of the bug totally.

b0f1a59a "tracing/filters: Use a different op for glob match" added
glob matching to tracepoint filter strings. It uses the ftrace function
tracing glob matching facility that allows for the wild card character (*)
to be used at the start and/or end of the matching string.
But the documentation still states that the filtering only allows for
exact string matches.

There are some cases when filtering on a set flag of a field of a tracepoint
is useful. But currently the only filtering commands for numbered fields
is ==, !=, <, <=, >, >=. This does not help when you just want to trace if
a specific flag is set. For example:
> # sudo trace-cmd record -e brcmfmac:brcmf_dbg -f 'level & 0x40000'
> disable all
> enable brcmfmac:brcmf_dbg
> path = /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events/brcmfmac/brcmf_dbg/enable
> (level & 0x40000)
> ^
> parse_error: Invalid operator
>
When trying to trace brcmf_dbg when level has its 1 << 18 bit set, the
filter fails to perform.
By allowing a binary '&' operation, this gives the user the ability to
test a bit.
Note, a binary '|' is not added, as it doesn't make sense as fields must
be compared to constants (for now), and ORing a constant will always return
true.

Conflicts:
drivers/net/wireless/ath/ath9k/Kconfig
drivers/net/xen-netback/netback.c
net/batman-adv/bat_iv_ogm.c
net/wireless/nl80211.c
The ath9k Kconfig conflict was a change of a Kconfig option name right
next to the deletion of another option.
The xen-netback conflict was overlapping changes involving the
handling of the notify list in xen_netbk_rx_action().
Batman conflict resolution provided by Antonio Quartulli, basically
keep everything in both conflict hunks.
The nl80211 conflict is a little more involved. In 'net' we added a
dynamic memory allocation to nl80211_dump_wiphy() to fix a race that
Linus reported. Meanwhile in 'net-next' the handlers were converted
to use pre and post doit handlers which use a flag to determine
whether to hold the RTNL mutex around the operation.
However, the dump handlers to not use this logic. Instead they have
to explicitly do the locking. There were apparent bugs in the
conversion of nl80211_dump_wiphy() in that we were not dropping the
RTNL mutex in all the return paths, and it seems we very much should
be doing so. So I fixed that whilst handling the overlapping changes.
To simplify the initial returns, I take the RTNL mutex after we try
to allocate 'tb'.

As per feedback from the netdev community, we change the buffer
overflow protection algorithm in receiving sockets so that it
always respects the nominal upper limit set in sk_rcvbuf.
Instead of scaling up from a small sk_rcvbuf value, which leads to
violation of the configured sk_rcvbuf limit, we now calculate the
weighted per-message limit by scaling down from a much bigger value,
still in the same field, according to the importance priority of the
received message.
To allow for administrative tunability of the socket receive buffer
size, we create a tipc_rmem sysctl variable to allow the user to
configure an even bigger value via sysctl command. It is a size of
three (min/default/max) to be consistent with things like tcp_rmem.
By default, the value initialized in tipc_rmem[1] is equal to the
receive socket size needed by a TIPC_CRITICAL_IMPORTANCE message.
This value is also set as the default value of sk_rcvbuf.

From Stephen Warren:
ARM: tegra: device tree updates
This branch contains all device tree updates for Tegra boards.
The changes are:
* Converted all DT files to use the C pre-processor, to support the use
of named constants. This included use of defines for GPIO, IRQ, and
clock constants.
* Enabling new features such as:
- SPI on Dalmore.
- Audio on Dalmore and Beaver.
- gpio-leds on Beaver.
- Power-supply/batter linkage on Dalmore.
* A minor fix to the RAM size node on Beaver.
It is based on previous pull request tegra-for-3.11-deps-for-usb
followed by a merge of tegra-for-3.11-deps-for-clk.

DM RAID: Add ability to restore transiently failed devices on resume
This patch adds code to the resume function to check over the devices
in the RAID array. If any are found to be marked as failed and their
superblocks can be read, an attempt is made to reintegrate them into
the array. This allows the user to refresh the array with a simple
suspend and resume of the array - rather than having to load a
completely new table, allocate and initialize all the structures and
throw away the old instantiation.

This is effectively already in force through input_mt_init_slots, and uinput
too ignores the actual minimum.
Since slots are a kernel-genenerated axis only, non-zero minimums make
little sense and are likely to cause errors. Better to treat a non-zero
minimum as kernel bug if it ever happens.

If the common clock framework is enabled, call of_clk_init(NULL) in
time_init() to register device tree clocks with the clock framework.
After this time_init() calls a new function init_metag_clocks(), which
looks for a clock named "core" in the node compatible with "img, meta"
(usually the root node). If found the get_core_freq machine callback is
overridden to obtain the core clock frequency using that clock.
