0b27c02a7f drm: Add an encoder and connector type enum for DPI.
Right now exynos is exposing DPI as a TMDS encoder and VGA connector,
which seems rather misleading.  This isn't just an internal detail,
since xrandr actually exposes "VGA" as the output name.  Define some
new enums so that vc4's DPI can have a more informative name.

I considered other names for the connector as well.  For VC4, the
Adafruit DPI kippah takes the 28 GPIO pins and routes them to a
standard-ish 40-pin FPC connector, but "40-pin FPC" doesn't uniquely
identify an ordering of pins (apparently some other orderings exist),
doesn't explain things as well for the user (who, if anything, knows
their product is a DPI kippah/panel combo), and actually doesn't have
to exist (one could connect the 28 GPIOs directly to something else).
Simply "DPI" seems like a good compromise name to distinguish from the
HDMI, DSI, and TV connectors .

6c87e5c3ec drm: Rename drm_connector_unplug_all() to drm_connector_unregister_all()
Current name is a bit misleading because what that helper function
really does it calls drm_connector_unregister() for all connectors.

This all has nothing to do with hotplugging so let's name things
properly.

And while at it remove potentially dangerous locking around
drm_connector_unregister() in rcar_du_remove() as mentioned
in kerneldoc for drm_connector_unregister_all().

5488dc16fd drm: introduce pipe color correction properties
Patch based on a previous series by Shashank Sharma.

This introduces optional properties to enable color correction at the
pipe level. It relies on 3 transformations applied to every pixels
displayed. First a lookup into a degamma table, then a multiplication
of the rgb components by a 3x3 matrix and finally another lookup into
a gamma table.

The following properties can be added to a pipe :
  - DEGAMMA_LUT : blob containing degamma LUT
  - DEGAMMA_LUT_SIZE : number of elements in DEGAMMA_LUT
  - CTM : transformation matrix applied after the degamma LUT
  - GAMMA_LUT : blob containing gamma LUT
  - GAMMA_LUT_SIZE : number of elements in GAMMA_LUT

DEGAMMA_LUT_SIZE and GAMMA_LUT_SIZE are read only properties, set by
the driver to tell userspace applications what sizes should be the
lookup tables in DEGAMMA_LUT and GAMMA_LUT.

A helper is also provided so legacy gamma correction is redirected
through these new properties.

5fff80bbdb drm/atomic: Allow for holes in connector state, v2.
Because we record connector_mask using 1 << drm_connector_index now
the connector_mask should stay the same even when other connectors
are removed. This was not the case with MST, in that case when removing
a connector all other connectors may change their index.

This is fixed by waiting until the first get_connector_state to allocate
connector_state, and force reallocation when state is too small.

As a side effect connector arrays no longer have to be preallocated,
and can be allocated on first use which means a less allocations in
the page flip only path.

2dd500f187 drm: Add functions to setup/tear down drm_events.
An attempt at not spreading out the file_priv->event_space stuff out
quite so far and wide.  And I think fixes something in ipp_get_event()
that is broken (or if they are doing something more weird/subtle, then
breaks it in a fun way).

eb47fe8033 drm: Do not set connector->encoder in drivers
An encoder is associated with a connector by the DRM core as a result of
setting up a configuration. Drivers using the atomic or legacy helpers
should never set up this link, even if it is a static one.

While at it, try to catch this kind of error in the future by adding a
WARN_ON() in drm_mode_connector_attach_encoder(). Note that this doesn't
cover all the cases, since drivers could set this up after attaching.
Drivers that use the atomic helpers will get a warning later on, though,
so hopefully the two combined cover enough to help people avoid this in
the future.

Show a sensible name for the plane in debug mesages. The driver
may supply its own name, otherwise the core genrates the name
("plane-0", "plane-1" etc.).

Done with coccinelle for the most part. It choked on
msm/mdp/mdp5/mdp5_plane.c like so:

No idea how to deal with that, so I just fixed that up
by hand.

Also it thinks '...' is part of the semantic patch, so I put an
'int DOTDOTDOT' placeholder in its place and got rid of it with
sed afterwards.

I didn't convert drm_plane_init() since passing the varargs through
would mean either cpp macros or va_list, and I figured we don't
care about these legacy functions enough to warrant the extra pain.

3558c112aa drm: connector->dpms is not optional
We always register the DPMS property, it's really a fundamental
part of a display driver. So don't check whether the vfunc is there,
it's non-optional

Yes I've audited all the almost 100 drm_connector_funcs we have, no
one botched this ;-)

1eb83451ba drm: Pass the user drm_mode_fb_cmd2 as const to .fb_create()
Drivers shouldn't clobber the passed in addfb ioctl parameters.
i915 was doing just that. To prevent it from happening again,
pass the struct around as const, starting all the way from
internal_framebuffer_create().

On atomic drivers we can dig out the primary plane rotation from the
plane state instead of looking at the legacy crtc->invert_dimensions
flag. The flag is not set by anyone except omapdrm, and it would be
racy to set it the same way in the atomic helpers.

3c67d839b3 drm: Fix return value of drm_framebuffer_init()
In its original version, drm_framebuffer_init() returned a negative int
if drm_mode_object_get() failed (f453ba0460, "DRM: add mode setting
support").

This was accidentally disabled by commit 4b096ac10d ("drm: revamp
locking around fb creation/destruction"). Thus, drm_framebuffer_init()
pretends success if drm_mode_object_get() failed.

Reinstate the original behaviour. Also fix erroneous kernel-doc of
drm_mode_object_get().

73f7570bc6 drm/core: Preserve the fb id on close.
Keep the fb_id, which means that any application exiting without
unsetting the framebuffer from all planes will preserve its contents.

This is similar to preserving the initial framebuffer, except all
planes are preserved.

1380313281 drm/core: Preserve the framebuffer after removing it.
Previously RMFB and fd close chose to disable any plane that had
an active framebuffer from this file. If it was a primary plane the
crtc was disabled. However the fbdev code or any system compositor
should restore the planes anyway so there's no need to do it twice.

The old fb_id is zero'd, so there's no danger of being able to
restore the fb from fb_id.

c099b55a6f drm/core: Do not call drm_framebuffer_remove internally during teardown.
This may cause issues because encoders are already destroyed so removing

9a69a9ac20 drm: Make the connector dpms callback return a value, v2.
This is required to properly handle failing dpms calls.
When making a wait in i915 interruptible, I've noticed
that the dpms sequence could fail with -ERESTARTSYS because
it was waiting interruptibly for flips. So from now on
allow drivers to fail in their connector dpms callback.

Encoder and crtc dpms callbacks are unaffected.

3fdefa399e drm: gc now dead mode_group code
Two nice things here:
- drm_dev_register will truly register everything in the right order
  if the driver doesn't have a ->load callback. Before this we had to
  init the primary mode_group after the device nodes where already
  registered.

- Less things to keep track of when reworking the connector locking,
  yay!

9c7060f7e3 drm: Stop filtering according to mode_group in getresources
It's been dead code since forever since mode groups haven't ever been
implemented. On top of that it's also been non-functional since we
only ever filtered the getresources ioctl and not any of the others
nor the mode object lookup code.

Given overwhelming evidence it looks like this isn't a feature we
need, hence remove it.

Now that we also grab the connection_mutex and so fixed the race with
atomic modeset we can use the iterator there too.

The other special case is drm_connector_unplug_all which would have a
locking inversion with the sysfs store/show functions if we'd grab the
mode_config.mutex around the unplug. We could just grab
connection_mutex instead, but that's a bit too much a dirty trick for
my taste. Also it's only used by udl, which doesn't do any other kind
of connector hotplugging, so should be race-free. Hence just stick
with a comment for now.

6295d607ad drm: Add modeset object iterators
And roll them out across drm_* files. The point here isn't code
prettification (it helps with that too) but that some of these lists
aren't static any more. And having macros will gives us a convenient
place to put locking checks into.

I didn't add an iterator for props since that's only used by a
list_for_each_entry_safe in the driver teardown code.

Search&replace was done with the below cocci spatch. Note that there's
a bunch more places that didn't match and which would need some manual
changes, but I've intentially left these out for this mostly automated
patch.

Backmerge fixes since it's getting out of hand again with the massive
split due to atomic between -next and 4.2-rc. All the bugfixes in
4.2-rc are addressed already (by converting more towards atomic
instead of minimal duct-tape) so just always pick the version in next

3cb43cc0b4 drm: Update plane->fb also for page_flip
The legacy page_flip driver entry point is the only one left which
requires drivers to update plane->fb themselves. All the other entry
hooks will patch things up for the driver as needed since no one seems
to reliable get this right, see e.g. drm_mode_set_config_internal or
the plane->fb/old_fb handling in drm_mode_atomic_ioctl.

Therefore unify things, which allows us to ditch a TODO from
drm_atomic_helper_page_flip.

This should also help the atomic transition in i915 since we keep a
bit of legacy cruft only around because of this special behaviour in
->page_flip.

e24ff467e1 drm/crtc: Fix edid length computation
The length of each EDID block is EDID_LENGTH, and number of blocks is
(1 + edid->extensions) - we need to multiply not add them.

This causes wrong EDID to be passed on, and is a regression introduced

bbe16a40e2 drm: check for garbage in unused addfb2 fields
Unfortunately old userspace didn't clear this properly, but since
we've added fb modifiers that's fixed. Checking properly that unused
fields is important for abi extensions, and just right now there's a
bunch of discussions going on about how exactly the additional aux
planes for render compression should be specified.

So let's first make sure that the values in those additional fields
can be indeed used.

Add an ioctl which allows users to create blob properties from supplied
data. Currently this only supports modes, creating a drm_display_mode from
the userspace drm_mode_modeinfo.

3968be946a drm: Make integer overflow checking cover universal cursor updates (v2)
Our legacy SetPlane updates perform integer overflow checking on a
plane's destination rectangle in drm_mode_setplane(), and atomic updates
handled as part of a drm_atomic_state transaction do the same checking
in drm_atomic_plane_check().  However legacy cursor updates that get
routed through universal plane interfaces may bypass this overflow
checking if the driver's .update_plane is serviced by the transitional
plane helpers rather than the full atomic plane helpers.

Move the check for destination rectangle integer overflow from the
drm_mode_setplane() to __setplane_internal() so that it also covers
cursor operations.

This fixes an issue first noticed with i915 commit:

we've switched to weak references, broke that assumption but forgot to
fix it up.

Since we still force-disable planes it's only possible to hit this
when racing multiple rmfb with fbdev restoring or similar evil things.
As long as userspace is nice it's impossible to hit the BUG_ON.

But the BUG_ON would most likely be hit from fbdev code, which usually
invovles the console_lock besides all modeset locks. So very likely
we'd never get the bug reports if this was hit in the wild, hence
better be safe than sorry and backport.

Spotted by Matt Roper while reviewing other patches.

7eb5f302bb drm: Check in setcrtc if the primary plane supports the fb pixel format
Drivers implementing the universal planes API report the list of
supported pixel formats for the primary plane. Make sure the fb passed
to the setcrtc ioctl is compatible.

Drivers not implementing the universal planes API will have no format
reported for the primary plane, skip the check in that case.

we've switched to weak references, broke that assumption but forgot to
fix it up.

Since we still force-disable planes it's only possible to hit this
when racing multiple rmfb with fbdev restoring or similar evil things.
As long as userspace is nice it's impossible to hit the BUG_ON.

But the BUG_ON would most likely be hit from fbdev code, which usually
invovles the console_lock besides all modeset locks. So very likely
we'd never get the bug reports if this was hit in the wild, hence
better be safe than sorry and backport.

cursor id. Instead let's move the file_priv linking out of
add_framebuffer_internal() into the addfb ioctl implementation, which is
the only place it is needed. And also rename the function for a more
accurate since it only creates the fb, but doesn't add it anywhere.

e3eb3250d8 drm: add support for tiled/compressed/etc modifier in addfb2
In DRM/KMS we are lacking a good way to deal with tiled/compressed
formats.  Especially in the case of dmabuf/prime buffer sharing, where
we cannot always rely on under-the-hood flags passed to driver specific
gem-create ioctl to pass around these extra flags.

The proposal is to add a per-plane format modifier.  This allows to, if
necessary, use different tiling patters for sub-sampled planes, etc.
The format modifiers are added at the end of the ioctl struct, so for
legacy userspace it will be zero padded.

v2: Incorporate review comments from the big thread, plus a few more.

- Add a getcap so that userspace doesn't have to jump through hoops.
- Allow modifiers only when a flag is set. That way drivers know when
  they're dealing with old userspace and need to fish out e.g. tiling
  from other information.
- After rolling out checks for ->modifier to all drivers I've decided
  that this is way too fragile and needs an explicit opt-in flag. So
  do that instead.
- Add a define (just for documentation really) for the "NONE"
  modifier. Imo we don't need to add mask #defines since drivers
  really should only do exact matches against values defined with
  fourcc_mod_code.
- Drop the Samsung tiling modifier on Rob's request since he's not yet
  sure whether that one is accurate.

- Also add a new ->modifier[] array to struct drm_framebuffer and fill
  it in drm_helper_mode_fill_fb_struct. Requested by Tvrkto Uruslin.
- Remove TODO in comment and add code comment that modifiers should be

3d3f8b1f8b drm/bridge: make bridge registration independent of drm flow
Currently, third party bridge drivers(ptn3460) are dependent
on the corresponding encoder driver init, since bridge driver
needs a drm_device pointer to finish drm initializations.
The encoder driver passes the drm_device pointer to the
bridge driver. Because of this dependency, third party drivers
like ptn3460 doesn't adhere to the driver model.

In this patch, we reframe the bridge registration framework
so that bridge initialization is split into 2 steps, and
bridge registration happens independent of drm flow:
--Step 1: gather all the bridge settings independent of drm and
	  add the bridge onto a global list of bridges.
--Step 2: when the encoder driver is probed, call drm_bridge_attach
	  for the corresponding bridge so that the bridge receives
	  drm_device pointer and continues with connector and other
	  drm initializations.

The old set of bridge helpers are removed, and a set of new helpers
are added to accomplish the 2 step initialization.

The bridge devices register themselves onto global list of bridges
when they get probed by calling "drm_bridge_add".

The parent encoder driver waits till the bridge is available
in the lookup table(by calling "of_drm_find_bridge") and then
continues with its initialization.

The encoder driver should also call "drm_bridge_attach" to pass
on the drm_device to the bridge object.

drm_bridge_attach inturn calls "bridge->funcs->attach" so that
bridge can continue with drm related initializations.

eab3bbeffd drm/atomic: Add drm_crtc_state->active
This is the infrastructure for DPMS ported to the atomic world.
Fundamental changes compare to legacy DPMS are:

- No more per-connector dpms state, instead there's just one per each
  display pipeline. So if you clone either you have to unclone first
  if you only want to switch off one screen, or you just switch of
  everything (like all desktops do). This massively reduces complexity
  for cloning since now there's no more half-enabled cloned configs to
  consider.

- Only on/off, dpms standby/suspend are as dead as real CRTs. Again
  reduces complexity a lot.

Now especially for backwards compat the really important part for dpms
support is that dpms on always succeeds (except for hw death and
unplugged cables ofc). Which means everything that could fail (like
configuration checking, resources assignments and buffer management)
must be done irrespective from ->active. ->active is really only a
toggle to change the hardware state. More precisely:

- Drivers MUST NOT look at ->active in their ->atomic_check callbacks.
  Changes to ->active MUST always suceed if nothing else changes.

- Drivers using the atomic helpers MUST NOT look at ->active anywhere,
  period. The helpers will take care of calling the respective
  enable/modeset/disable hooks as necessary. As before the helpers
  will carefully keep track of the state and not call any hooks
  unecessarily, so still no double-disables or enables like with crtc
  helpers.

- ->mode_set hooks are only called when the mode or output
  configuration changes, not for changes in ->active state.

- Drivers which reconstruct the state objects in their ->reset hooks
  or through some other hw state readout infrastructure must ensure
  that ->active reflects actual hw state.

This just implements the core bits and helper logic, a subsequent
patch will implement the helper code to implement legacy dpms with
this.

- Move crtc checks to the core check function.
- Also check for ->active_changed when deciding whether a modeset
  might happen (for the ALLOW_MODESET mode).

d34f20d6e2 drm: Atomic modeset ioctl
The atomic modeset ioctl can be used to push any number of new values
for object properties. The driver can then check the full device
configuration as single unit, and try to apply the changes atomically.

The ioctl simply takes a list of object IDs and property IDs and their
values.

Originally based on a patch from Ville Syrjälä, although it has mutated
(mutilated?) enough since then that you probably shouldn't blame it on
him ;-)

The atomic support is hidden behind the DRM_CLIENT_CAP_ATOMIC cap (to
protect legacy userspace) and drm.atomic module param (for now).

v2: Check for file_priv->atomic to make sure we only allow userspace
in-the-know to use atomic.

Once a driver is using atomic helpers for modeset, the next step is to
switch over to atomic properties.  To do this, make sure that any
modeset objects have their ->atomic_{get,set}_property() vfuncs suitably
populated if they have custom properties (you did already remember to
plug in atomic-helper func for the legacy ->set_property() vfuncs,
right?), and then set DRIVER_ATOMIC bit in driver_features flag.

A new cap is introduced, DRM_CLIENT_CAP_ATOMIC, for the purposes of
shielding legacy userspace from atomic properties.  Mostly for the
benefit of legacy DDX drivers that do silly things like getting/setting
each property at startup (since some of the new atomic properties will
be able to trigger modeset).

23e1ce89af drm: Do basic sanity checks for user modes
Currently userspace is allowed to pass in basiclly any kind of garbage
to setcrtc. Try to catch the cases where the timings make no sense
by passing the mode through drm_mode_validate_basic().

One concern here is that we now start to block some modes that have
worked in the past. It's at least possible with when using i915 with
LVDS/eDP. Previously we've just ignored everything but hdisplay/vdisplay
from the user mode and just overwritten the rest with the panel fixed
mode. So if someone has been passing a mode with just those populated
that would now stop working. If that is a real problem, we can't add
these checks to the core code and each driver would have to have its
own sanity checks. So fingers crossed...

A couple of whitespace changes required to silent various errors and
warnings flagged by checkpatch.

checkpatch requires that the opening brace be on the same line as a
variable declaration. Furthermore an empty line is required after a
block of variable declarations. Trailing whitespace as well as using
spaces before tabs is considered an error or warning, respectively.
Finally, the closing parenthesis of an if condition and the opening
brace of the conditional block should be separated by a space.

of the DRM device need to zero out the DRM object memory to void stale
data such as properties. The DRM core code expects to operate on newly

A tile group is an identifier shared by a single monitor,
DisplayID topology has 8 bytes we can use for this, just
use those for now until something else comes up in the
future. We assign these to an idr and use the idr to
tell userspace what connectors are in the same tile group.

DisplayID v1.3 says the serial number must be unique for
displays from the same manufacturer.

abd69c55dd drm: Handle atomic state properly in kms getfoo ioctl
So the problem with async commit (especially async modeset commit) is
that the legacy pointers only get updated after the point of no
return, in the async part of the modeset sequence. At least as
implemented by the current helper functions. This is done in the
set_routing_links function in drm_atomic_helper.c.

Which also means that access isn't protected by locks but only
coordinated by synchronizing with async workers. No problem thus far,
until we lock at the getconnector/encoder ioctls.

So fix this up by adding special cases for atomic drivers: For those
we need to look at state objects. Unfortunately digging out the
correct encoder->crtc link is a bit of work, so wrap this up in a
helper function.

Moving the assignments of connector->encoder and encoder->crtc earlier
isn't a good idea because the point of the atomic helpers is that we
stage the state updates. That way the disable functions can still
inspect the links and rely upon them.

v2: Extract full encoder->crtc lookup into helper (Rob).

v3: Extract drm_connector_get_encoder too since - we need to always
return state->best_encoder when there is a state otherwise we might
return stale data if there's a pending async disable (and chase
unlocked pointers, too). Same issue with encoder_get_crtc but there
it's a bit more tricky to handle.

3758b34193 drm: s/enum_blob_list/enum_list/ in drm_property
I guess for hysterical raisins this was meant to be the way to read
blob properties. But that's done with the two-stage approach which
uses separate blob kms object and the special-purpose get_blob ioctl.

Shipping userspace seems to have never relied on this, and the kernel
also never put any blob thing onto that property. And nowadays it
would blow up, e.g. in drm_property_destroy. Also it makes no sense to
return values in an ioctl that only returns metadata about everything.

So let's ditch all the internal code for the blob list, rename the
list to be unambiguous and sprinkle comments all over the place to
explain this peculiar piece of api.

c7eb76f493 drm/atomic: Ensure that drm_connector_index is stable
I've totally forgotten that with DP MST connectors can now be
hotplugged. And failed to adapt Rob's drm_atomic_state code (which
predates connector hotplugging) to the new realities.

The first step is to make sure that the connector indices used to
access the arrays of pointers are stable. The connection mutex gives
us enough guarantees for that, which means we won't unecessarily block
on concurrent modesets or background probing.

So add a locking WARN_ON and shuffle the code slightly to make sure we
always hold the right lock.

ca5a71de48 drm: Sanitize DRM_IOCTL_MODE_CREATE_DUMB input
Some drivers erroneously treat the .pitch and .size fields of struct
 drm_mode_create_dumb as inputs. While the include/uapi/drm/drm_mode.h
 header has a comment denoting them as outputs, that seemingly wasn't
 enough to make drivers use them properly.
 
 The result is that some userspace doesn't explicitly zero out those
 fields, assuming that the kernel won't use them. That causes problems
 since the data within the structure might be uninitialized, so bogus
 data may end up confusing drivers (ridiculously large values for the
 pitch, ...).
 
 This series attempts to improve the situation by fixing all drivers to
 not use the output fields. Furthermore to spare new drivers this bad
 surprise, the DRM core now zeros out these fields prior to handing the
 data structure to the driver.
 
 Lessons learned from this are that future IOCTLs should be properly
 documented (in the DRM DocBook for example) and should be rigorously
 defined. To prevent misuse like this, userspace should be required to
 zero out all output fields. The kernel should check for this and fail
 if that's not the case.

drm: Sanitize DRM_IOCTL_MODE_CREATE_DUMB input

Some drivers erroneously treat the .pitch and .size fields of struct
drm_mode_create_dumb as inputs. While the include/uapi/drm/drm_mode.h
header has a comment denoting them as outputs, that seemingly wasn't
enough to make drivers use them properly.

The result is that some userspace doesn't explicitly zero out those
fields, assuming that the kernel won't use them. That causes problems
since the data within the structure might be uninitialized, so bogus
data may end up confusing drivers (ridiculously large values for the
pitch, ...).

This series attempts to improve the situation by fixing all drivers to
not use the output fields. Furthermore to spare new drivers this bad
surprise, the DRM core now zeros out these fields prior to handing the
data structure to the driver.

Lessons learned from this are that future IOCTLs should be properly
documented (in the DRM DocBook for example) and should be rigorously
defined. To prevent misuse like this, userspace should be required to
zero out all output fields. The kernel should check for this and fail
if that's not the case.

5bb2bbf596 drm: add properties for suggested x/y offset for connectors. (v2)
Virtual GPUs would like to give the guest some indication where on the screen
the outputs are layed out. So far we only provide modes, these
properties could be exposed to userspace so the desktop environment
could use them as hints to set the correct offsets.

Some drivers treat the pitch and size fields as inputs and will use them
as minima provided by userspace so that they are only overwritten if the
minimal requirements of the driver exceed them.

This can cause strange behaviour when applications don't zero out these
fields, causing whatever was on the stack to be passed to the IOCTL. In
a typical case this would become visible as a failed allocation if the
pitch or size were unusually high. But this could also cause more subtle
bugs like overallocating dumb framebuffers.

To prevent drivers from misusing these values, make the DRM core zero
out the pitch and size fields before passing the structure to the driver
implementation.

While at it, also set the output handle field to zero for good measure,
even though it's less likely to be abused.

  universal cursor plane might not be there, or someone really crazy
  might forgoe the primary plane even accept NULL.

- Add some locking WARN_ON to the atomic helpers for good paranoid
  measure and to check that it all works out.

Tested on my exynos atomic hackfest with full lockdep checks and ww
backoff injection.

f2b50c1161 drm: Fixup locking for universal cursor planes
Bunch of things amiss:
- Updating crtc->cursor_x/y was done without any locking. Spotted by
  David Herrmann.
- Dereferencing crtc->cursor->fb was using the wrong lock, should take
  the crtc lock.
- Grabbing _all_ modeset locks torpedoes the reason why we added
  fine-grained locks originally: Cursor updates shouldn't stall on
  background stuff like probing outputs.

Best is to just grab the crtc lock around everything and drop all the
other locking. The only issue is that we can't switch planes between
crtcs with that, so make sure that never happens when someone uses
universal plane helpers. This shouldn't be a possible regression ever
since legacy ioctls also only grabbed the crtc lock, so switching
crtcs was never possible for the underlying plane object. And i915
(the only user of universal cursors thus far) has fixed cursor->crtc
links.

d0fa1af40e drm: Drop modeset locking from crtc init function
At driver init no one can access modeset objects and we're
single-threaded. So locking is just cargo-culting here. Worse, with
the new ww mutexes and ww mutex slowpath debugging the mutex_lock
might actually fail, and we don't have the full-blown ww recovery
dance.

Which then leads to fireworks when we try to unlock the not-locked
crtc lock.

An audit of all the functions called from here shows that none of them
contain locking checks, so there's also no reason to keep the locking
around just for consistency of caller contexts. Besides that I have
the rule (at least in i915) that such places where we take locks just
to simplify locking checks and not for correctness always require a
comment.

Kinda unexpected, but DIV_ROUND_UP() can overflow if passed an argument
bigger than UINT_MAX - DIVISOR. Fix this by testing for "!cpp" before
using it in the following division.

Note that DIV_ROUND_UP() is defined as:
        #define DIV_ROUND_UP(n,d) (((n) + (d) - 1) / (d))

..this will obviously overflow if (n + d - 1) is bigger than UINT_MAX.

In general having this can't hurt, and the atomic helpers will need
it to be able to reset the state objects properly. The overall idea
is to reset in the order pixels flow, so planes -> crtcs ->
encoders -> connectors.

Atomic implemenations for legacy ioctls must be able to drop locks.
Which doesn't cause havoc since we only do that while constructing
the new state, so no driver or hardware state change has happened.

The only troubling bit is the fb refcounting the core does - if
someone else has snuck in then it might potentially unref an

d059f652e7 drm: Handle legacy per-crtc locking with full acquire ctx
So drivers using the atomic interfaces expect that they can acquire
additional locks internal to the driver as-needed. Examples would be
locks to protect shared state like shared display PLLs.

Unfortunately the legacy ioctls assume that all locking is fully done
by the drm core. Now for those paths which grab all locks we already
have to keep around an acquire context in dev->mode_config. Helper
functions that implement legacy interfaces in terms of atomic support
can therefore grab this acquire contexts and reuse it.

The only interfaces left are the cursor and pageflip ioctls. So add
functions to grab the crtc lock these need using an acquire context
and preserve it for atomic drivers to reuse.

10f637bf29 drm: Add drm_plane/connector_index
In the atomic state we'll have an array of states for crtcs, planes
and connectors and need to be able to at them by their index. We
already have a drm_crtc_index function so add the missing ones for
planes and connectors.

If it later on turns out that the list walking is too expensive we can
add the index to the relevant modeset objects.

Rob Clark doesn't like the loops too much, but we can always add an
obj->idx parameter later on. And for now reiterating is actually safer
since nowadays we have hotpluggable connectors (thanks to DP MST).

"drm_file->is_master is not synomous with having drm_file->master ==
drm_file->minor->master. This is because drm_file->master is the same

every drm_file believes itself to be the master. Confusion ensues and
things go pear shaped when one file is closed and there is no master
anymore."

eaf99c749d drm: Perform cmdline mode parsing during connector initialisation
i915.ko has a custom fbdev initialisation routine that aims to preserve
the current mode set by the BIOS, unless overruled by the user. The
user's wishes are determined by what, if any, mode is specified on the
command line (via the video= parameter). However, that command line mode
is first parsed by drm_fb_helper_initial_config() which is called after
i915.ko's custom initial_config() as a fallback method. So in order for
us to honour it, we need to move the cmdline parser earlier. If we
perform the connector cmdline parsing as soon as we initialise the
connector, that cmdline mode and forced status is then available even if
the fbdev helper is not compiled in or never called.

We also then expose the cmdline user mode in the connector mode lists.

83f45fc360 drm: Don't grab an fb reference for the idr
The current refcounting scheme is that the fb lookup idr also holds a
reference. This works out nicely bacause thus far we've always
explicitly cleaned up idr entries for framebuffers:
- Userspace fbs get removed in the rmfb ioctl or when the drm file
  gets closed.
- Kernel fbs (for fbdev emulation) get cleaned up by the driver code
  at module unload time.

But now i915 also reconstructs the bios fbs for a smooth transition.
And that fb is purely transitional and should get removed immmediately
once all crtcs stop using it. Of course if the i915 fbdev code decides
to reuse it as the main fbdev fb then it shouldn't be cleaned up, but
in that case the fbdev code will grab it's own reference.

The problem is now that we also want to register that takeover fb in
the idr, so that userspace can do a smooth transition (animated maybe
even!) itself. But currently we have no one who will clean up the idr
reference once that fb isn't useful any more, and so essentially leak
it.

Fix this by no longer holding a full fb reference for the idr, but
instead just have a weak reference using kref_get_unless_zero. But
that requires us to synchronize and clean up with the idr and fb_lock
in drm_framebuffer_free, so add that. It's a bit ugly that we have to
unconditionally grab the fb_lock, but without that someone might creep
through a race.

This leak was caught by the fb leak check in drm_mode_config_cleanup.

  which implicitly clears it to NULL.

  minor->master cannot be set if it is non-NULL. Therefore, it stays as
  is unless a file drops it.

  If minor->master is NULL, it is only set by places that also adjust
  drm_file->is_master.

Therefore, we can safely drop is_master and replace it by an inline helper
that matches:
    drm_file->master && drm_file->master == drm_file->minor->master

2ee39452fa drm: close race in connector registration (v2)
Daniel pointed out with hotplug that userspace could be trying to oops us
as root for lols, and that to be correct we shouldn't register the object
with the idr before we have fully set the connector object up.

His proposed solution was a lot more life changing, this seemed like a simpler
proposition to me, get the connector object id from the idr, but don't
register the object until the drm_connector_register callback.

The open question is whether the drm_mode_object_register needs a bigger lock
than just the idr one, but I can't see why it would, but I can be locking
challenged.

3c9855f6dc drm: Add drm_rotation_simplify()
drm_rotation_simplify() can be used to eliminate unsupported rotation
flags. It will check if any unsupported flags are present, and if so
it will modify the rotation to an alternate form by adding 180 degrees
to rotation angle, and flipping the reflect x and y bits. The hope is
that this identity transform will eliminate the unsupported flags.

Of course that might not result in any more supported rotation, so
the caller is still responsible for checking the result afterwards.

161d0dc1dc drm: Support legacy cursor ioctls via universal planes when possible (v4)
If drivers support universal planes and have registered a cursor plane
with the DRM core, we should use that universal plane support when
handling legacy cursor ioctls.  Drivers that transition to universal
planes won't have to maintain separate legacy ioctl handling; drivers
that don't transition to universal planes will continue to operate
without any change to behavior.

Note that there's a bit of a mismatch between the legacy cursor ioctls
and the universal plane API's --- legacy ioctl's use driver buffer
handles directly whereas the universal plane API takes drm_framebuffers.
Since there's no way to recover the driver handle from a
drm_framebuffer, we can implement legacy ioctl's in terms of universal
plane interfaces, but cannot implement universal plane interfaces in
terms of legacy ioctls.  Specifically, there's no way to create a
general cursor helper in the way we previously created a primary plane
helper.

It's important to land this patch before any patches that add universal
cursor support to individual drivers so that drivers don't have to worry
about juggling two different styles of reference counting for cursor
buffers when userspace mixes and matches legacy and universal cursor
calls.  With this patch, a driver that switches to universal cursor
support may assume that all cursor buffers are wrapped in a
drm_framebuffer and can rely on framebuffer reference counting for all
cursor operations.

   semantics.

 - Drop drm_mode_rmfb() call that is no longer needed now that we're
   using setplane_internal(), which takes care of deref'ing the
   appropriate framebuffer.

b36552b32a drm: Refactor setplane to allow internal use (v3)
Refactor DRM setplane code into a new setplane_internal() function that
takes DRM objects directly as parameters rather than looking them up by
ID.  We'll use this in a future patch when we implement legacy cursor
ioctls on top of the universal plane interface.

 - Move integer overflow checking from setplane_internal to setplane
   ioctl.  The upcoming legacy cursor support via universal planes needs
   to maintain current cursor ioctl semantics and not return error for
   these extreme values (found via intel-gpu-tools kms_cursor_crc test).

 - Allow planes to be disabled without a valid crtc again (and add
   mention of this to setplane's kerneldoc, since it doesn't seem to be
   mentioned anywhere else).

832fd395ce drm: Fix getconnector connection_mutex locking
I've fumbled my own idea and enthusiastically wrapped all the
getconnector code with the connection_mutex. But we only need it to
chase the connector->encoder link. Even there it's not really needed
since races with userspace won't matter, but better paranoid and
consistent about this stuff.

If we grap it everywhere connector probe callbacks can't grab it
themselves, which means they'll deadlock. i915 does that for the load
detect pipe. Furthermore i915 needs to do a ww dance since we also
need to grab the mutex of the load detect crtc.

This is a regression from

specified CRTC before calling into the driver.

Prior to this patch, a plane's possible_crtcs field was purely
informational for userspace and was never actually verified at the

51fd371bba drm: convert crtc and connection_mutex to ww_mutex (v5)
For atomic, it will be quite necessary to not need to care so much
about locking order.  And 'state' gives us a convenient place to stash a
ww_ctx for any sort of update that needs to grab multiple crtc locks.

Because we will want to eventually make locking even more fine grained
(giving locks to planes, connectors, etc), split out drm_modeset_lock
and drm_modeset_acquire_ctx to track acquired locks.

Atomic will use this to keep track of which locks have been acquired
in a transaction.

6e9f798d91 drm: Split connection_mutex out of mode_config.mutex (v3)
After the split-out of crtc locks from the big mode_config.mutex
there's still two major areas it protects:
- Various connector probe states, like connector->status, EDID
  properties, probed mode lists and similar information.
- The links from connector->encoder and encoder->crtc and other
  modeset-relevant connector state (e.g. properties which control the
  panel fitter).

The later is used by modeset operations. But they don't really care
about the former since it's allowed to e.g. enable a disconnected VGA
output or with a mode not in the probed list.

Thus far this hasn't been a problem, but for the atomic modeset
conversion Rob Clark needs to convert all modeset relevant locks into
w/w locks. This is required because the order of acquisition is
determined by how userspace supplies the atomic modeset data. This has
run into troubles in the detect path since the i915 load detect code
needs _both_ protections offered by the mode_config.mutex: It updates
probe state and it needs to change the modeset configuration to enable
the temporary load detect pipe.

The big deal here is that for the probe/detect users of this lock a
plain mutex fits best, but for atomic modesets we really want a w/w
mutex. To fix this lets split out a new connection_mutex lock for the
modeset relevant parts.

For simplicity I've decided to only add one additional lock for all
connector/encoder links and modeset configuration states. We have
piles of different modeset objects in addition to those (like bridges
or panels), so adding per-object locks would be much more effort.

Also, we're guaranteed (at least for now) to do a full modeset if we
need to acquire this lock. Which means that fine-grained locking is
fairly irrelevant compared to the amount of time the full modeset will
take.

I've done a full audit, and there's just a few things that justify
special focus:
- Locking in drm_sysfs.c is almost completely absent. We should
  sprinkle mode_config.connection_mutex over this file a bit, but
  since it already lacks mode_config.mutex this patch wont make the
  situation any worse. This is material for a follow-up patch.

- omap has a omap_framebuffer_flush function which walks the
  connector->encoder->crtc links and is called from many contexts.
  Some look like they don't acquire mode_config.mutex, so this is
  already racy. Again fixing this is material for a separate patch.

- The radeon hot_plug function to retrain DP links looks at
  connector->dpms. Currently this happens without any locking, so is
  already racy. I think radeon_hotplug_work_func should gain
  mutex_lock/unlock calls for the mode_config.connection_mutex.

- Same applies to i915's intel_dp_hot_plug. But again, this is already
  racy.

- i915 load_detect code needs to acquire this lock. Which means the
  w/w dance due to Rob's work will be nicely contained to _just_ this
  function.

I've added fixme comments everywhere where it looks suspicious but in
the sysfs code. After a quick irc discussion with Dave Airlie it
sounds like the lack of locking in there is due to sysfs cleanup fun
at module unload.

5ea22f24d7 drm: add extended property types
If we continue to use bitmask for type, we will quickly run out of room
to add new types.  Split this up so existing part of bitmask range
continues to function as before, but reserve a chunk of the remaining
space for an integer type-id.  Wrap this all up in some type-check
helpers to keep the backwards-compat uglyness contained.
