9c27847dda kernel/params: constify struct kernel_param_ops uses
Most code already uses consts for the struct kernel_param_ops,
sweep the kernel for the last offending stragglers. Other than
include/linux/moduleparam.h and kernel/params.c all other changes
were generated with the following Coccinelle SmPL patch. Merge
conflicts between trees can be handled with Coccinelle.

In the future git could get Coccinelle merge support to deal with
patch --> fail --> grammar --> Coccinelle --> new patch conflicts
automatically for us on patches where the grammar is available and
the patch is of high confidence. Consider this a feature request.

9507271d96 svcrpc: fix potential GSSX_ACCEPT_SEC_CONTEXT decoding failures
In an environment where the KDC is running Active Directory, the
exported composite name field returned in the context could be large
enough to span a page boundary. Attaching a scratch buffer to the

The case where we saw this was actually due to behavior that's been
fixed in newer gss-proxy versions, but we're fixing it here too.

3f94009816 sunrpc: make debugfs file creation failure non-fatal
v2: gracefully handle the case where some dentry pointers end up NULL
and be more dilligent about zeroing out dentry pointers

We currently have a problem that SELinux policy is being enforced when
creating debugfs files. If a debugfs file is created as a side effect of
doing some syscall, then that creation can fail if the SELinux policy
for that process prevents it.

This seems wrong. We don't do that for files under /proc, for instance,
so Bruce has proposed a patch to fix that.

While discussing that patch however, Greg K.H. stated:

"No kernel code should care / fail if a debugfs function fails, so
please fix up the sunrpc code first."

This patch converts all of the sunrpc debugfs setup code to be void
return functins, and the callers to not look for errors from those
functions.

This should allow rpc_clnt and rpc_xprt creation to work, even if the
kernel fails to create debugfs files for some reason.

41416f2330 lib/string_helpers.c: change semantics of string_escape_mem
The current semantics of string_escape_mem are inadequate for one of its
current users, vsnprintf(). If that is to honour its contract, it must
know how much space would be needed for the entire escaped buffer, and
string_escape_mem provides no way of obtaining that (short of allocating a
large enough buffer (~4 times input string) to let it play with, and
that's definitely a big no-no inside vsnprintf).

So change the semantics for string_escape_mem to be more snprintf-like:
Return the size of the output that would be generated if the destination
buffer was big enough, but of course still only write to the part of dst
it is allowed to, and (contrary to snprintf) don't do '\0'-termination.
It is then up to the caller to detect whether output was truncated and to
append a '\0' if desired. Also, we must output partial escape sequences,
otherwise a call such as snprintf(buf, 3, "%1pE", "\123") would cause
printf to write a \0 to buf[2] but leaving buf[0] and buf[1] with whatever
they previously contained.

This also fixes a bug in the escaped_string() helper function, which used
to unconditionally pass a length of "end-buf" to string_escape_mem();
since the latter doesn't check osz for being insanely large, it would
happily write to dst. For example, kasprintf(GFP_KERNEL, "something and
then %pE", ...); is an easy way to trigger an oops.

In test-string_helpers.c, the -ENOMEM test is replaced with testing for
getting the expected return value even if the buffer is too small. We
also ensure that nothing is written (by relying on a NULL pointer deref)
if the output size is 0 by passing NULL - this has to work for
kasprintf("%pE") to work.

In net/sunrpc/cache.c, I think qword_add still has the same semantics.
Someone should definitely double-check this.

In fs/proc/array.c, I made the minimum possible change, but longer-term it
should stop poking around in seq_file internals.

2813893f8b kernel: conditionally support non-root users, groups and capabilities
There are a lot of embedded systems that run most or all of their
functionality in init, running as root:root. For these systems,
supporting multiple users is not necessary.

This patch adds a new symbol, CONFIG_MULTIUSER, that makes support for
non-root users, non-root groups, and capabilities optional. It is enabled
under CONFIG_EXPERT menu.

When this symbol is not defined, UID and GID are zero in any possible case
and processes always have all capabilities.

The following syscalls are compiled out: setuid, setregid, setgid,
setreuid, setresuid, getresuid, setresgid, getresgid, setgroups,
getgroups, setfsuid, setfsgid, capget, capset.

Also, groups.c is compiled out completely.

In kernel/capability.c, capable function was moved in order to avoid
adding two ifdef blocks.

This change saves about 25 KB on a defconfig build. The most minimal
kernels have total text sizes in the high hundreds of kB rather than
low MB. (The 25k goes down a bit with allnoconfig, but not that much.

The kernel was booted in Qemu. All the common functionalities work.
Adding users/groups is not possible, failing with -ENOSYS.

Bloat-o-meter output:
add/remove: 7/87 grow/shrink: 19/397 up/down: 1675/-26325 (-24650)

f9c72d10d6 sunrpc: make debugfs file creation failure non-fatal

Symptoms were failing krb5 mounts on systems using gss-proxy and
selinux.

Fixes: 388f0c7767 "sunrpc: add a debugfs rpc_xprt directory..."

805272406a xprtrdma: Byte-align FRWR registration
The RPC/RDMA transport's FRWR registration logic registers whole
pages. This means areas in the first and last pages that are not
involved in the RDMA I/O are needlessly exposed to the server.

Buffered I/O is typically page-aligned, so not a problem there. But
for direct I/O, which can be byte-aligned, and for reply chunks,
which are nearly always smaller than a page, the transport could
expose memory outside the I/O buffer.

FRWR allows byte-aligned memory registration, so let's use it as
it was intended.

Note that rpc_xdr_encode() resets and re-encodes the entire RPC

is not preserved from the previous transmission of an RPC.

Dan Carpenter's static checker pointed out:

   net/sunrpc/xprtrdma/rpc_rdma.c:879 rpcrdma_reply_handler()

"credits" is defined as an int. The credits value comes from the

A malicious or broken server can plant a large unsigned integer in
that field which would result in an underflow in the following
logic, potentially triggering a deadlock of the mount point by
blocking the client from issuing more RPC requests.

net/sunrpc/xprtrdma/rpc_rdma.c:

a1d1e9be5a svcrpc: fix memory leak in gssp_accept_sec_context_upcall
Our UC-KLEE tool found a kernel memory leak of 512 bytes (on x86_64) for
each call to gssp_accept_sec_context_upcall()
(net/sunrpc/auth_gss/gss_rpc_upcall.c). Since it appears that this call
can be triggered by remote connections (at least, from a cursory a
glance at the call chain), it may be exploitable to cause kernel memory
exhaustion. We found the bug in kernel 3.16.3, but it appears to date
back to commit 9dfd87da1a (2013-08-20).

The gssp_accept_sec_context_upcall() function performs a pair of calls
to gssp_alloc_receive_pages() and gssp_free_receive_pages(). The first
allocates memory for arg->pages. The second then frees the pages
pointed to by the arg->pages array, but not the array itself.

718ba5b873 SUNRPC: Add helpers to prevent socket create from racing

connection be established. While that is efficient in the case where
the connection happens quickly, it is racy in the case where it doesn't.
What we really want is for the connect helper to be able to block access
to the socket while it is being set up.

This patch does so by arranging to transfer the socket lock from the
task that is requesting the connect attempt, and then releasing that
lock once everything is done.
This scheme also gives us automatic protection against collisions with
the RPC close code, so we can kill the cancel_delayed_work_sync()

6b1184cd4f xprtrdma: Allocate RPC/RDMA receive buffer separately from struct rpcrdma_rep
The rr_base field is currently the buffer where RPC replies land.

An RPC/RDMA reply header lands in this buffer. In some cases an RPC
reply header also lands in this buffer, just after the RPC/RDMA
header.

The inline threshold is an agreed-on size limit for RDMA SEND
operations that pass from server and client. The sum of the
RPC/RDMA reply header size and the RPC reply header size must be
less than this threshold.

The largest RDMA RECV that the client should have to handle is the
size of the inline threshold. The receive buffer should thus be the
size of the inline threshold, and not related to RPCRDMA_MAX_SEGS.

RPC replies received via RDMA WRITE (long replies) are caught in
rq_rcv_buf, which is the second half of the RPC send buffer. Ie,
such replies are not involved in any way with rr_base.

85275c874e xprtrdma: Allocate RPC/RDMA send buffer separately from struct rpcrdma_req
The rl_base field is currently the buffer where each RPC/RDMA call
header is built.

The inline threshold is an agreed-on size limit to for RDMA SEND
operations that pass between client and server. The sum of the
RPC/RDMA header size and the RPC header size must be less than or
equal to this threshold.

Increasing the r/wsize maximum will require MAX_SEGS to grow
significantly, but the inline threshold size won't change (both
sides agree on it). The server's inline threshold doesn't change.

Since an RPC/RDMA header can never be larger than the inline
threshold, make all RPC/RDMA header buffers the size of the
inline threshold.

0ca77dc372 xprtrdma: Allocate RPC send buffer separately from struct rpcrdma_req
Because internal memory registration is an expensive and synchronous
operation, xprtrdma pre-registers send and receive buffers at mount
time, and then re-uses them for each RPC.

A "hardway" allocation is a memory allocation and registration that
replaces a send buffer during the processing of an RPC. Hardway must
be done if the RPC send buffer is too small to accommodate an RPC's
call and reply headers.

For xprtrdma, each RPC send buffer is currently part of struct
rpcrdma_req so that xprt_rdma_free(), which is passed nothing but
the address of an RPC send buffer, can find its matching struct
rpcrdma_req and rpcrdma_rep quickly via container_of / offsetof.

That means that hardway currently has to replace a whole rpcrmda_req
when it replaces an RPC send buffer. This is often a fairly hefty
chunk of contiguous memory due to the size of the rl_segments array
and the fact that both the send and receive buffers are part of
struct rpcrdma_req.

Some obscure re-use of fields in rpcrdma_req is done so that
xprt_rdma_free() can detect replaced rpcrdma_req structs, and
restore the original.

This commit breaks apart the RPC send buffer and struct rpcrdma_req
so that increasing the size of the rl_segments array does not change
the alignment of each RPC send buffer. (Increasing rl_segments is
needed to bump up the maximum r/wsize for NFS/RDMA).

This change opens up some interesting possibilities for improving
the design of xprt_rdma_allocate().

xprt_rdma_allocate() is now the one place where RPC send buffers
are allocated or re-allocated, and they are now always left in place
by xprt_rdma_free().

A large re-allocation that includes both the rl_segments array and
the RPC send buffer is no longer needed. Send buffer re-allocation
becomes quite rare. Good send buffer alignment is guaranteed no
matter what the size of the rl_segments array is.

a97c331f9a svcrdma: Handle additional inline content
Most NFS RPCs place their large payload argument at the end of the
RPC header (eg, NFSv3 WRITE). For NFSv3 WRITE and SYMLINK, RPC/RDMA
sends the complete RPC header inline, and the payload argument in
the read list. Data in the read list is the last part of the XDR
stream.

One important case is not like this, however. NFSv4 COMPOUND is a
counted array of operations. A WRITE operation, with its large data
payload, can appear in the middle of the compound's operations
array. Thus NFSv4 WRITE compounds can have header content after the
WRITE payload.

The Linux client, for example, performs an NFSv4 WRITE like this:

  { PUTFH, WRITE, GETATTR }

Though RFC 5667 is not precise about this, the proper way to convey
this compound is to place the GETATTR inline, _after_ the front of
the RPC header. The receiver inserts the read list payload into the
XDR stream after the initial WRITE arguments, and before the GETATTR
operation, thanks to the value of the read list "position" field.

The Linux client currently sends the GETATTR at the end of the
RPC/RDMA read list, which is incorrect. It will be corrected in the
future.

The Linux server currently rejects NFSv4 compounds with inline
content after the read list. For the above NFSv4 WRITE compound, the
NFS compound header indicates there are three operations, but the
server finds nonsense when it looks in the XDR stream for the third
operation, and the compound fails with OP_ILLEGAL.

Move trailing inline content to the end of the XDR buffer's page
list. This presents incoming NFSv4 WRITE compounds to NFSD in the
same way the socket transport does.

0b056c224b svcrdma: Support RDMA_NOMSG requests
Currently the Linux server can not decode RDMA_NOMSG type requests.
Operations whose length exceeds the fixed size of RDMA SEND buffers,
like large NFSv4 CREATE(NF4LNK) operations, must be conveyed via
RDMA_NOMSG.

For an RDMA_MSG type request, the client sends the RPC/RDMA, RPC
headers, and some or all of the NFS arguments via RDMA SEND.

For an RDMA_NOMSG type request, the client sends just the RPC/RDMA
header via RDMA SEND. The request's read list contains elements for
the entire RPC message, including the RPC header.

NFSD expects the RPC/RMDA header and RPC header to be contiguous in
page zero of the XDR buffer. Add logic in the RDMA READ path to make
the read list contents land where the server prefers, when the
incoming message is a type RDMA_NOMSG message.

61edbcb7c7 svcrdma: rc_position sanity checking
An RPC/RDMA client may send large RPC arguments via a read
list. This is a list of scatter/gather elements which convey
RPC call arguments too large to fit in a small RDMA SEND.

Each entry in the read list has a "position" field, whose value is
the byte offset in the XDR stream where the data in that entry is to
be inserted. Entries which share the same "position" value make up
the same RPC argument. The receiver inserts entries with the same
position field value in list order into the XDR stream.

Currently the Linux NFS/RDMA server cannot handle receiving read
chunks in more than one position, mostly because no current client
sends read lists with elements in more than one position. As a
sanity check, ensure that all received chunks have the same
"rc_position."

A struct xdr_stream at a page boundary might point to the end of one

This can cause corruption of NFSv4 READDIR replies in the case that a

b1691bc03d sunrpc: convert to lockless lookup of queued server threads
Testing has shown that the pool->sp_lock can be a bottleneck on a busy
server. Every time data is received on a socket, the server must take
that lock in order to dequeue a thread from the sp_threads list.

Address this problem by eliminating the sp_threads list (which contains
threads that are currently idle) and replacing it with a RQ_BUSY flag in
svc_rqst. This allows us to walk the sp_all_threads list under the
rcu_read_lock and find a suitable thread for the xprt by doing a
test_and_set_bit.

Note that we do still have a potential atomicity problem however with
this approach. We don't want svc_xprt_do_enqueue to set the
rqst->rq_xprt pointer unless a test_and_set_bit of RQ_BUSY returned
zero (which indicates that the thread was idle). But, by the time we
check that, the bit could be flipped by a waking thread.

To address this, we acquire a new per-rqst spinlock (rq_lock) and take
that before doing the test_and_set_bit. If that returns false, then we
can set rq_xprt and drop the spinlock. Then, when the thread wakes up,
it must set the bit under the same spinlock and can trust that if it was
already set then the rq_xprt is also properly set.

With this scheme, the case where we have an idle thread no longer needs
to take the highly contended pool->sp_lock at all, and that removes the
bottleneck.

That still leaves one issue: What of the case where we walk the whole
sp_all_threads list and don't find an idle thread? Because the search is
lockess, it's possible for the queueing to race with a thread that is
going to sleep. To address that, we queue the xprt and then search again.

If we find an idle thread at that point, we can't attach the xprt to it
directly since that might race with a different thread waking up and
finding it. All we can do is wake the idle thread back up and let it
attempt to find the now-queued xprt.

ceff739c53 sunrpc: have svc_wake_up only deal with pool 0
The way that svc_wake_up works is a bit inefficient. It walks all of the
available pools for a service and either wakes up a task in each one or
sets the SP_TASK_PENDING flag in each one.

When svc_wake_up is called, there is no need to wake up more than one
thread to do this work. In practice, only lockd currently uses this
function and it's single threaded anyway. Thus, this just boils down to
doing a wake up of a thread in pool 0 or setting a single flag.

Merge tag 'nfs-for-3.19-1' into nfsd for-3.19 branch

Mainly what I need is 860a0d9e51 "sunrpc: add some tracepoints in
svc_rqst handling functions", which subsequent server rpc patches from
jlayton depend on. I'm merging this later tag on the assumption that's
more likely to be a tested and stable point.

388f0c7767 sunrpc: add a debugfs rpc_xprt directory with an info file in it
Add a new directory heirarchy under the debugfs sunrpc/ directory:

    sunrpc/
        rpc_xprt/
            <xprt id>/

Within that directory, we can put files that give info about the
xprts. We do have the (minor) problem that there is no succinct,
unique identifier for rpc_xprts. So we generate them synthetically
with a static atomic_t counter.

For now, this directory just holds an "info" file, but we may add
other files to it in the future.

b4b9d2ccf0 sunrpc: add debugfs file for displaying client rpc_task queue
It's possible to get a dump of the RPC task queue by writing a value to
/proc/sys/sunrpc/rpc_debug. If you write any value to that file, you get
a dump of the RPC client task list into the log buffer. This is a rather
inconvenient interface however, and makes it hard to get immediate info
about the task queue.

Add a new directory hierarchy under debugfs:

    sunrpc/
        rpc_clnt/
            <clientid>/

Within each clientid directory we create a new "tasks" file that will
dump info similar to what shows up in the log buffer, but with a few
small differences -- we avoid printing raw kernel addresses in favor of
symbolic names and the XID is also displayed.

edef1297f3 SUNRPC: serialize iostats updates
Occasionally mountstats reports a negative retransmission rate.
Ensure that two RPCs completing concurrently don't confuse the sums
in the transport's op_metrics array.

Since pNFS filelayout can invoke rpc_count_iostats() on another
transport from xprt_release(), we can't rely on simply holding the
transport_lock in xprt_release(). There's nothing for it but hard
serialization. One spin lock per RPC operation should make this as
painless as it can be.

5c166bef4f xprtrdma: Re-write rpcrdma_flush_cqs()
Currently rpcrdma_flush_cqs() attempts to avoid code duplication,
and simply invokes rpcrdma_recvcq_upcall and rpcrdma_sendcq_upcall.

1. rpcrdma_flush_cqs() can run concurrently with provider upcalls.
Both flush_cqs() and the upcalls were invoking ib_poll_cq() in
different threads using the same wc buffers (ep->rep_recv_wcs
and ep->rep_send_wcs), added by commit 1c00dd0776 ("xprtrmda:
Reduce calls to ib_poll_cq() in completion handlers").

During transport disconnect processing, this sometimes resulted
in the same reply getting added to the rpcrdma_tasklets_g list
more than once, which corrupted the list.

2. The upcall functions drain only a limited number of CQEs,
thanks to the poll budget added by commit 8301a2c047
("xprtrdma: Limit work done by completion handler").

467c9674bc xprtrdma: unmap all FMRs during transport disconnect
When using RPCRDMA_MTHCAFMR memory registration, after a few
transport disconnect / reconnect cycles, ib_map_phys_fmr() starts to
return EINVAL because the provider has exhausted its map pool.

Make sure that all FMRs are unmapped during transport disconnect,
and that ->send_request remarshals them during an RPC retransmit.
This resets the transport's MRs to ensure that none are leaked
during a disconnect.

e7104a2a96 xprtrdma: Cap req_cqinit
Recent work made FRMR registration and invalidation completions
unsignaled. This greatly reduces the adapter interrupt rate.

Every so often, however, a posted send Work Request is allowed to
signal. Otherwise, the provider's Work Queue will wrap and the
workload will hang.

The number of Work Requests that are allowed to remain unsignaled is
determined by the value of req_cqinit. Currently, this is set to the
size of the send Work Queue divided by two, minus 1.

For FRMR, the send Work Queue is the maximum number of concurrent
RPCs (currently 32) times the maximum number of Work Requests an
RPC might use (currently 7, though some adapters may need more).

For mlx4, this is 224 entries. This leaves completion signaling
disabled for 111 send Work Requests.

Some providers hold back dispatching Work Requests until a CQE is
generated. If completions are disabled, then no CQEs are generated
for quite some time, and that can stall the Work Queue.

I've seen this occur running xfstests generic/113 over NFSv4, where
eventually, posting a FAST_REG_MR Work Request fails with -ENOMEM
because the Work Queue has overflowed. The connection is dropped
and re-established.

Cap the rep_cqinit setting so completions are not left turned off
for too long.

7e5be28827 svcrdma: advertise the correct max payload
Svcrdma currently advertises 1MB, which is too large. The correct value
is the minimum of RPCSVC_MAXPAYLOAD and the max scatter-gather allowed
in an NFSRDMA IO chunk * the host page size. This bug is usually benign
because the Linux X64 NFSRDMA client correctly limits the payload size to
the correct value (64*4096 = 256KB). But if the Linux client is PPC64
with a 64KB page size, then the client will indeed use a payload size
that will overflow the server.

2aca5b869a SUNRPC: Add missing support for RPC_CLNT_CREATE_NO_RETRANS_TIMEOUT
The flag RPC_CLNT_CREATE_NO_RETRANS_TIMEOUT was intended introduced in
order to allow NFSv4 clients to disable resend timeouts. Since those
cause the RPC layer to break the connection, they mess up the duplicate
reply caches that remain indexed on the port number in NFSv4..

This patch includes the code that was missing in the original to
set the appropriate flag in struct rpc_clnt, when the caller of
rpc_create() sets RPC_CLNT_CREATE_NO_RETRANS_TIMEOUT.

1aff525629 NFS/SUNRPC: Remove other deadlock-avoidance mechanisms in nfs_release_page()
Now that nfs_release_page() doesn't block indefinitely, other deadlock
avoidance mechanisms aren't needed.
 - it doesn't hurt for kswapd to block occasionally. If it doesn't
want to block it would clear __GFP_WAIT. The current_is_kswapd()
was only added to avoid deadlocks and we have a new approach for
   that.
 - memory allocation in the SUNRPC layer can very rarely try to
->releasepage() a page it is trying to handle. The deadlock
is removed as nfs_release_page() doesn't block indefinitely.

So we don't need to set PF_FSTRANS for sunrpc network operations any
more.

3dedbb5ca1 rpc: Add -EPERM processing for xs_udp_send_request()
If an iptables drop rule is added for an nfs server, the client can end up in
a softlockup. Because of the way that xs_sendpages() is structured, the -EPERM
is ignored since the prior bits of the packet may have been successfully queued
and thus xs_sendpages() returns a non-zero value. Then, xs_udp_send_request()
thinks that because some bits were queued it should return -EAGAIN. We then try
the request again and again, resulting in cpu spinning. Reproducer:

1) open a file on the nfs server '/nfs/foo' (mounted using udp)
2) iptables -A OUTPUT -d <nfs server ip> -j DROP
3) write to /nfs/foo
4) close /nfs/foo
5) iptables -D OUTPUT -d <nfs server ip> -j DROP

The softlockup occurs in step 4 above.

The previous patch, allows xs_sendpages() to return both a sent count and
any error values that may have occurred. Thus, if we get an -EPERM, return
that to the higher level code.

With this patch in place we can successfully abort the above sequence and
avoid the softlockup.

I also tried the above test case on an nfs mount on tcp and although the system
does not softlockup, I still ended up with the 'hung_task' firing after 120
seconds, due to the i/o being stuck. The tcp case appears a bit harder to fix,
since -EPERM appears to get ignored much lower down in the stack and does not
propogate up to xs_sendpages(). This case is not quite as insidious as the
softlockup and it is not addressed here.

f279cd008f rpc: return sent and err from xs_sendpages()
If an error is returned after the first bits of a packet have already been
successfully queued, xs_sendpages() will return a positive 'int' value
indicating success. Callers seem to treat this as -EAGAIN.

However, there are cases where its not a question of waiting for the write
queue to drain. For example, when there is an iptables rule dropping packets
to the destination, the lower level code can return -EPERM only after parts
of the packet have been successfully queued. In this case, we can end up
continuously retrying resulting in a kernel softlockup.

This patch is intended to make no changes in behavior but is in preparation for
subsequent patches that can make decisions based on both on the number of bytes
sent by xs_sendpages() and any errors that may have be returned.

a743419f42 SUNRPC: Don't wake tasks during connection abort
When aborting a connection to preserve source ports, don't wake the task in
xs_error_report. This allows tasks with RPC_TASK_SOFTCONN to succeed if the

instead of setting it to the status of the aborting kernel_connect().

0f7a622ca6 rpc: xs_bind - do not bind when requesting a random ephemeral port
When attempting to establish a local ephemeral endpoint for a TCP or UDP
socket, do not explicitly call bind, instead let it happen implicilty when the
socket is first used.

The main motivating factor for this change is when TCP runs out of unique
ephemeral ports (i.e. cannot find any ephemeral ports which are not a part of
*any* TCP connection). In this situation if you explicitly call bind, then the
call will fail with EADDRINUSE. However, if you allow the allocation of an
ephemeral port to happen implicitly as part of connect (or other functions),
then ephemeral ports can be reused, so long as the combination of (local_ip,
local_port, remote_ip, remote_port) is unique for TCP sockets on the system.

This doesn't matter for UDP sockets, but it seemed easiest to treat TCP and UDP
sockets the same.

This can allow mount.nfs(8) to continue to function successfully, even in the
face of misbehaving applications which are creating a large number of TCP
connections.

d1e458fe67 svcrdma: remove rdma_create_qp() failure recovery logic
In svc_rdma_accept(), if rdma_create_qp() fails, there is useless
logic to try and call rdma_create_qp() again with reduced sge depths.
The assumption, I guess, was that perhaps the initial sge depths
chosen were too big. However they initial depths are selected based
on the rdma device attribute max_sge returned from ib_query_device().
If rdma_create_qp() fails, it would not be because the max_send_sge and
max_recv_sge values passed in exceed the device's max. So just remove
this code.

connections. xprtrdma creates a fresh QP on reconnection, so that
event should be explicitly ignored.

Squelch the alarming "unexpected CM event" message.

440ddad51b xprtrdma: Don't post a LOCAL_INV in rpcrdma_register_frmr_external()
Any FRMR arriving in rpcrdma_register_frmr_external() is now
guaranteed to be either invalid, or to be targeted by a queued
LOCAL_INV that will invalidate it before the adapter processes
the FAST_REG_MR being built here.

The problem with current arrangement of chaining a LOCAL_INV to the
FAST_REG_MR is that if the transport is not connected, the LOCAL_INV
is flushed and the FAST_REG_MR is flushed. This leaves the FRMR
valid with the old rkey. But rpcrdma_register_frmr_external() has
already bumped the in-memory rkey.

Next time through rpcrdma_register_frmr_external(), a LOCAL_INV and
FAST_REG_MR is attempted again because the FRMR is still valid. But
the rkey no longer matches the hardware's rkey, and a memory
management operation error occurs.

ddb6bebcc6 xprtrdma: Reset FRMRs after a flushed LOCAL_INV Work Request
When a LOCAL_INV Work Request is flushed, it leaves an FRMR in the
VALID state. This FRMR can be returned by rpcrdma_buffer_get(), and

Instead, capture these in rpcrdma_buffer_get(), and reset them.

9f9d802a28 xprtrdma: Reset FRMRs when FAST_REG_MR is flushed by a disconnect
FAST_REG_MR Work Requests update a Memory Region's rkey. Rkey's are
used to block unwanted access to the memory controlled by an MR. The
rkey is passed to the receiver (the NFS server, in our case), and is
also used by xprtrdma to invalidate the MR when the RPC is complete.

When a FAST_REG_MR Work Request is flushed after a transport
disconnect, xprtrdma cannot tell whether the WR actually hit the
adapter or not. So it is indeterminant at that point whether the
existing rkey is still valid.

After the transport connection is re-established, the next
FAST_REG_MR or LOCAL_INV Work Request against that MR can sometimes
fail because the rkey value does not match what xprtrdma expects.

The only reliable way to recover in this case is to deregister and
register the MR before it is used again. These operations can be
done only in a process context, so handle it in the transport
connect worker.

Thus calling rpcrdma_deregister_external() in
rpcrdma_create_chunks() is useless in FRMR mode: the LOCAL_INVs just
get flushed.

It is safe to leave existing registrations: when FRMR registration

3c45ddf823 svcrdma: Select NFSv4.1 backchannel transport based on forward channel
The current code always selects XPRT_TRANSPORT_BC_TCP for the back
channel, even when the forward channel was not TCP (eg, RDMA). When
a 4.1 mount is attempted with RDMA, the server panics in the TCP BC
code when trying to send CB_NULL.

Instead, construct the transport protocol number from the forward
channel transport or'd with XPRT_TRANSPORT_BC. Transports that do
not support bi-directional RPC will not have registered a "BC"
transport, causing create_backchannel_client() to fail immediately.

c1221321b7 sched: Allow wait_on_bit_action() functions to support a timeout
It is currently not possible for various wait_on_bit functions
to implement a timeout.

While the "action" function that is called to do the waiting
could certainly use schedule_timeout(), there is no way to carry
forward the remaining timeout after a false wake-up.
As false-wakeups a clearly possible at least due to possible
hash collisions in bit_waitqueue(), this is a real problem.

The 'action' function is currently passed a pointer to the word
containing the bit being waited on. No current action functions
use this pointer. So changing it to something else will be a
little noisy but will have no immediate effect.

This patch changes the 'action' function to take a pointer to
the "struct wait_bit_key", which contains a pointer to the word
containing the bit so nothing is really lost.

It also adds a 'private' field to "struct wait_bit_key", which
is initialized to zero.

An action function can now implement a timeout with something
like

static int timed_out_waiter(struct wait_bit_key *key)
{
	unsigned long waited;
	if (key->private == 0) {
		key->private = jiffies;
		if (key->private == 0)
			key->private -= 1;
	}
	waited = jiffies - key->private;
	if (waited > 10 * HZ)
		return -EAGAIN;
	schedule_timeout(waited - 10 * HZ);
	return 0;
}

If any other need for context in a waiter were found it would be
easy to use ->private for some other purpose, or even extend
"struct wait_bit_key".

My particular need is to support timeouts in nfs_release_page()
to avoid deadlocks with loopback mounted NFS.

While wait_on_bit_timeout() would be a cleaner interface, it
will not meet my need. I need the timeout to be sensitive to
the state of the connection with the server, which could change.
So I need to use an 'action' interface.

05638dc73a nfsd4: simplify server xdr->next_page use
The rpc code makes available to the NFS server an array of pages to
encod into. The server represents its reply as an xdr buf, with the
head pointing into the first page in that array, the pages ** array
starting just after that, and the tail (if any) sharing any leftover
space in the page used by the head.

While encoding, we use xdr_stream->page_ptr to keep track of which page
we're currently using.

Currently we set xdr_stream->page_ptr to buf->pages, which makes the
head a weird exception to the rule that page_ptr always points to the
page we're currently encoding into. So, instead set it to buf->pages -
1 (the page actually containing the head), and remove the need for a
little unintuitive logic in xdr_get_next_encode_buffer() and
xdr_truncate_encode.

c93c62231c xprtrdma: Disconnect on registration failure
If rpcrdma_register_external() fails during request marshaling, the
current RPC request is killed. Instead, this RPC should be retried
after reconnecting the transport instance.

The most likely reason for registration failure with FRMR is a
failed post_send, which would be due to a remote transport
disconnect or memory exhaustion. These issues can be recovered
by a retry.

Problems encountered in the marshaling logic itself will not be
corrected by trying again, so these should still kill a request.

Now that we've added a clean exit for marshaling errors, take the

e7ce710a88 xprtrdma: Avoid deadlock when credit window is reset
Update the cwnd while processing the server's reply. Otherwise the
next task on the xprt_sending queue is still subject to the old
credit window. Currently, no task is awoken if the old congestion
window is still exceeded, even if the new window is larger, and a
deadlock results.

This is an issue during a transport reconnect. Servers don't
normally shrink the credit window, but the client does reset it to
1 when reconnecting so the server can safely grow it again.

As a minor optimization, remove the hack of grabbing the initial
cwnd size (which happens to be RPC_CWNDSCALE) and using that value
as the congestion scaling factor. The scaling value is invariant,
and we are better off without the multiplication operation.

ec62f40d35 xprtrdma: Ensure ia->ri_id->qp is not NULL when reconnecting
Devesh Sharma <Devesh.Sharma@Emulex.Com> reports that after a
disconnect, his HCA is failing to create a fresh QP, leaving
ia_ri->ri_id->qp set to NULL. But xprtrdma still allows RPCs to
wake up and post LOCAL_INV as they exit, causing an oops.

rpcrdma_ep_connect() is allowing the wake-up by leaking the QP
creation error code (-EPERM in this case) to the RPC client's
generic layer. xprt_connect_status() does not recognize -EPERM, so
it kills pending RPC tasks immediately rather than retrying the
connect.

Re-arrange the QP creation logic so that when it fails on reconnect,
it leaves ->qp with the old QP rather than NULL. If pending RPC
tasks wake and exit, LOCAL_INV work requests will flush rather than
oops.

On initial connect, leaving ->qp == NULL is OK, since there are no
pending RPCs that might use ->qp. But be sure not to try to destroy
a NULL QP when rpcrdma_ep_connect() is retried.

65866f8259 xprtrdma: Reduce the number of hardway buffer allocations
While marshaling an RPC/RDMA request, the inline_{rsize,wsize}
settings determine whether an inline request is used, or whether
read or write chunks lists are built. The current default value of
these settings is 1024. Any RPC request smaller than 1024 bytes is
sent to the NFS server completely inline.

rpcrdma_buffer_create() allocates and pre-registers a set of RPC
buffers for each transport instance, also based on the inline rsize
and wsize settings.

RPC/RDMA requests and replies are built in these buffers. However,
if an RPC/RDMA request is expected to be larger than 1024, a buffer
has to be allocated and registered for that RPC, and deregistered
and released when the RPC is complete. This is known has a
"hardway allocation."

Since the introduction of NFSv4, the size of RPC requests has become
larger, and hardway allocations are thus more frequent. Hardway
allocations are significant overhead, and they waste the existing
RPC buffers pre-allocated by rpcrdma_buffer_create().

We'd like fewer hardway allocations.

Increasing the size of the pre-registered buffers is the most direct
way to do this. However, a blanket increase of the inline thresholds
has interoperability consequences.

On my 64-bit system, rpcrdma_buffer_create() requests roughly 7000
bytes for each RPC request buffer, using kmalloc(). Due to internal
fragmentation, this wastes nearly 1200 bytes because kmalloc()
already returns an 8192-byte piece of memory for a 7000-byte
allocation request, though the extra space remains unused.

So let's round up the size of the pre-allocated buffers, and make
use of the unused space in the kmalloc'd memory.

This change reduces the amount of hardway allocated memory for an
NFSv4 general connectathon run from 1322092 to 9472 bytes (99%).

fc66448549 xprtrdma: Split the completion queue
The current CQ handler uses the ib_wc.opcode field to distinguish
between event types. However, the contents of that field are not
reliable if the completion status is not IB_WC_SUCCESS.

When an error completion occurs on a send event, the CQ handler
schedules a tasklet with something that is not a struct rpcrdma_rep.
This is never correct behavior, and sometimes it results in a panic.

To resolve this issue, split the completion queue into a send CQ and
a receive CQ. The send CQ handler now handles only struct rpcrdma_mw
wr_id's, and the receive CQ handler now handles only struct
rpcrdma_rep wr_id's.

4034ba0423 nfs-rdma: Fix for FMR leaks
Two memory region leaks were found during testing:

1. rpcrdma_buffer_create: While allocating RPCRDMA_FRMR's
ib_alloc_fast_reg_mr is called and then ib_alloc_fast_reg_page_list is
called. If ib_alloc_fast_reg_page_list returns an error it bails out of
the routine dropping the last ib_alloc_fast_reg_mr frmr region creating a
memory leak. Added code to dereg the last frmr if
ib_alloc_fast_reg_page_list fails.

2. rpcrdma_buffer_destroy: While cleaning up, the routine will only free
the MR's on the rb_mws list if there are rb_send_bufs present. However, in
rpcrdma_buffer_create while the rb_mws list is being built if one of the MR
allocation requests fail after some MR's have been allocated on the rb_mws
list the routine never gets to create any rb_send_bufs but instead jumps to
the rpcrdma_buffer_destroy routine which will never free the MR's on rb_mws
list because the rb_send_bufs were never created. This leaks all the MR's
on the rb_mws list that were created prior to one of the MR allocations
failing.

Issue(2) was seen during testing. Our adapter had a finite number of MR's
available and we created enough connections to where we saw an MR
allocation failure on our Nth NFS connection request. After the kernel
cleaned up the resources it had allocated for the Nth connection we noticed
that FMR's had been leaked due to the coding error described above.

Issue(1) was seen during a code review while debugging issue(2).
