ACPI / table: remove duplicate NULL check for the handler of acpi_table_parse()
In acpi_table_parse(), pointer of the table to pass to handler() is checked before handler() called, so remove all the duplicate NULL check in the handler function. vm: add VM_FAULT_SIGSEGV handling support
The core VM already knows about VM_FAULT_SIGBUS, but cannot return a
"you should SIGSEGV" error, because the SIGSEGV case was generally
handled by the caller - usually the architecture fault handler.
That results in lots of duplication - all the architecture fault
handlers end up doing very similar "look up vma, check permissions, do
retries etc" - but it generally works. However, there are cases where
the VM actually wants to SIGSEGV, and applications _expect_ SIGSEGV.
In particular, when accessing the stack guard page, libsigsegv expects a
SIGSEGV. And it usually got one, because the stack growth is handled by
that duplicated architecture fault handler.
However, when the generic VM layer started propagating the error return
from the stack expansion in commit

ACPICA: Resources: Provide common part for struct acpi_resource_address structures.
struct acpi_resource_address and struct acpi_resource_extended_address64 share substracts just at different offsets. To unify the parsing functions, OSPMs like Linux need a new ACPI_ADDRESS64_ATTRIBUTE as their substructs, so they can extract the shared data. This patch also synchronizes the structure changes to the Linux kernel. The usages are searched by matching the following keywords: 1. acpi_resource_address 2. acpi_resource_extended_address 3. ACPI_RESOURCE_TYPE_ADDRESS 4. ACPI_RESOURCE_TYPE_EXTENDED_ADDRESS And we found and fixed the usages in the following files: arch/ia64/kernel/acpi-ext.c arch/ia64/pci/pci.c arch/x86/pci/acpi.c arch/x86/pci/mmconfig-shared.c drivers/xen/xen-acpi-memhotplug.c drivers/acpi/acpi_memhotplug.c drivers/acpi/pci_root.c drivers/acpi/resource.c drivers/char/hpet.c drivers/pnp/pnpacpi/rsparser.c drivers/hv/vmbus_drv.c Build tests are passed with defconfig/allnoconfig/allyesconfig and defconfig+CONFIG_ACPI=n. Surprising number of fixes this merge window :(
First two are minor fallout from the param rework which went in this merge window. Next three are a series which fixes a longstanding (but never previously reported and unlikely , so no CC stable) race between kallsyms and freeing the init section. Finally, a minor cleanup as our module refcount will now be -1 during unload. module_arch_freeing_init(): new hook for archs before module->module_init freed.
Archs have been abusing module_free() to clean up their arch-specific allocations. Since module_free() is also (ab)used by BPF and trace code, let's keep it to simple allocations, and provide a hook called before that. This means that avr32, ia64, parisc and s390 no longer need to implement their own module_free() at all. avr32 doesn't need module_finalize() either. ia64/PCI: Clip bridge windows to fit in upstream windows
Every PCI-PCI bridge window should fit inside an upstream bridge window
because orphaned address space is unreachable from the primary side of the
upstream bridge. If we inherit invalid bridge windows that overlap an
upstream window from firmware, clip them to fit and update the bridge
accordingly.

uaccess: fix sparse warning on get/put_user for bitwise types
At the moment, if p and x are both tagged as bitwise types, some of get_user(x, p), put_user(x, p), __get_user(x, p), __put_user(x, p) might produce a sparse warning on many architectures. This is a false positive: *p on these architectures is loaded into long (typically using asm), then cast back to typeof(*p). When typeof(*p) is a bitwise type (which is uncommon), such a cast needs __force, otherwise sparse produces a warning. Some architectures already have the __force tag, add it where it's missing. I verified that adding these __force casts does not supress any useful warnings. Specifically, vhost wants to read/write bitwise types in userspace memory using get_user/put_user. At the moment this triggers sparse errors, since the value is passed through an integer. For example: __le32 __user *p; __u32 x; both put_user(x, p); and get_user(x, p); should be safe, but produce warnings on some architectures. While there, I noticed that a bunch of architectures violated coding style rules within uaccess macros. Included patches to fix them up. Signed-off-by: Michael S. ia64: fix put_user sparse errors
virtio wants to write bitwise types to userspace using put_user. At the moment this triggers sparse errors, since the value is passed through an integer. For example: __le32 __user *p; __le32 x; put_user(x, p); is safe, but currently triggers a sparse warning. Fix that up using __force. Note: this does not suppress any useful sparse checks since callers do a cast (__typeof__(*(ptr))) (x) which in turn forces all the necessary type checks. Signed-off-by: Michael S. ACPI / processor: Rename acpi_(un)map_lsapic() to acpi_(un)map_cpu()
acpi_map_lsapic() will allocate a logical CPU number and map it to physical CPU id (such as APIC id) for the hot-added CPU, it will also do some mapping for NUMA node id and etc, acpi_unmap_lsapic() will do the reverse. We can see that the name of the function is a little bit confusing and arch (IA64) dependent so rename them as acpi_(un)map_cpu() to make arch agnostic and explicit. 3.19 changes for KVM:
- spring cleaning: removed support for IA64, and for hardware-assisted virtualization on the PPC970 - ARM, PPC, s390 all had only small fixes For x86: - small performance improvements (though only on weird guests) - usual round of hardware-compliancy fixes from Nadav - APICv fixes - XSAVES support for hosts and guests. XSAVES hosts were broken because the (non-KVM) XSAVES patches inadvertently changed the KVM userspace ABI whenever XSAVES was enabled; hence, this part is going to stable. Guest support is just a matter of exposing the feature and CPUID leaves support. Right now KVM is broken for PPC BookE in your tree (doesn't compile). I'll reply to the pull request with a patch, please apply it either before the pull request or in the merge commit, in order to preserve bisectability somewhat. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.22 (GNU/Linux) iQEcBAABAgAGBQJUkpg+AAoJEL/70l94x66DUmoH/jzXYkptSW9NGgm79KqxGJlD lzLnLBkitVvx++Mz5YBhdJEhKKLUlCtifFT1zPJQ/pthQhIRSaaAwZyNGgUs5w5x yMGKHiPQFyZRbmQtZhCInW0BftJoYHHciO3nUfHCZnp34My9MP2D55W7/z+fYFfQ DuqBSE9ThyZJtZ4zh8NRA9fCOeuqwVYRyoBs820Wbsh4cpIBoIK63Dg7k+CLE+ZV MZa/mRL6bAfsn9W5bnOUAgHJ3SPznnWbO3/g0aV+roL/5pffblprJx9lKNR08xUM 6hDFLop2gDehDJesDkY/o8Ckp1hEouvfsVpSShry4vcgtn0hgh2O5/6Orbmj6vE= =Zwq1 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/virt/kvm/kvm Pull KVM update from Paolo Bonzini: "3.19 changes for KVM: - spring cleaning: removed support for IA64, and for hardware- assisted virtualization on the PPC970 - ARM, PPC, s390 all had only small fixes For x86: - small performance improvements (though only on weird guests) - usual round of hardware-compliancy fixes from Nadav - APICv fixes - XSAVES support for hosts and guests. arch: Add lightweight memory barriers dma_rmb() and dma_wmb()
There are a number of situations where the mandatory barriers rmb() and wmb() are used to order memory/memory operations in the device drivers and those barriers are much heavier than they actually need to be. For example in the case of PowerPC wmb() calls the heavy-weight sync instruction when for coherent memory operations all that is really needed is an lsync or eieio instruction. This commit adds a coherent only version of the mandatory memory barriers rmb() and wmb(). In most cases this should result in the barrier being the same as the SMP barriers for the SMP case, however in some cases we use a barrier that is somewhere in between rmb() and smp_rmb(). For example on ARM the rmb barriers break down as follows: Barrier Call Explanation --------- -------- ---------------------------------- rmb() dsb() Data synchronization barrier - system dma_rmb() dmb(osh) data memory barrier - outer sharable smp_rmb() dmb(ish) data memory barrier - inner sharable These new barriers are not as safe as the standard rmb() and wmb(). Specifically they do not guarantee ordering between coherent and incoherent memories. The primary use case for these would be to enforce ordering of reads and writes when accessing coherent memory that is shared between the CPU and a device. It may also be noted that there is no dma_mb(). Most architectures don't provide a good mechanism for performing a coherent only full barrier without resorting to the same mechanism used in mb(). As such there isn't much to be gained in trying to define such a function. arch: Cleanup read_barrier_depends() and comments
This patch is meant to cleanup the handling of read_barrier_depends and smp_read_barrier_depends. In multiple spots in the kernel headers read_barrier_depends is defined as "do {} while (0)", however we then go into the SMP vs non-SMP sections and have the SMP version reference read_barrier_depends, and the non-SMP define it as yet another empty do/while. With this commit I went through and cleaned out the duplicate definitions and reduced the number of definitions down to 2 per header. In addition I moved the 50 line comments for the macro from the x86 and mips headers that defined it as an empty do/while to those that were actually defining the macro, alpha and blackfin. ACPI and power management updates for 3.19-rc1
This time we have some more new material than we used to have during the last couple of development cycles. The most important part of it to me is the introduction of a unified interface for accessing device properties provided by platform firmware. It works with Device Trees and ACPI in a uniform way and drivers using it need not worry about where the properties come from as long as the platform firmware (either DT or ACPI) makes them available. It covers both devices and "bare" device node objects without struct device representation as that turns out to be necessary in some cases. This has been in the works for quite a few months (and development cycles) and has been approved by all of the relevant maintainers. On top of that, some drivers are switched over to the new interface (at25, leds-gpio, gpio_keys_polled) and some additional changes are made to the core GPIO subsystem to allow device drivers to manipulate GPIOs in the "canonical" way on platforms that provide GPIO information in their ACPI tables, but don't assign names to GPIO lines (in which case the driver needs to do that on the basis of what it knows about the device in question). That also has been approved by the GPIO core maintainers and the rfkill driver is now going to use it. Second is support for hardware P-states in the intel_pstate driver. It uses CPUID to detect whether or not the feature is supported by the processor in which case it will be enabled by default. However, it can be disabled entirely from the kernel command line if necessary. Next is support for a platform firmware interface based on ACPI operation regions used by the PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) chips on the Intel Baytrail-T and Baytrail-T-CR platforms. That interface is used for manipulating power resources and for thermal management: sensor temperature reporting, trip point setting and so on. Also the ACPI core is now going to support the _DEP configuration information in a limited way. Basically, _DEP it supposed to reflect off-the-hierarchy dependencies between devices which may be very indirect, like when AML for one device accesses locations in an operation region handled by another device's driver (usually, the device depended on this way is a serial bus or GPIO controller). The support added this time is sufficient to make the ACPI battery driver work on Asus T100A, but it is general enough to be able to cover some other use cases in the future. Finally, we have a new cpufreq driver for the Loongson1B processor. In addition to the above, there are fixes and cleanups all over the place as usual and a traditional ACPICA update to a recent upstream release. As far as the fixes go, the ACPI LPSS (Low-power Subsystem) driver for Intel platforms should be able to handle power management of the DMA engine correctly, the cpufreq-dt driver should interact with the thermal subsystem in a better way and the ACPI backlight driver should handle some more corner cases, among other things. On top of the ACPICA update there are fixes for race conditions in the ACPICA's interrupt handling code which might lead to some random and strange looking failures on some systems. In the cleanups department the most visible part is the series of commits targeted at getting rid of the CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME configuration option. That was triggered by a discussion regarding the generic power domains code during which we realized that trying to support certain combinations of PM config options was painful and not really worth it, because nobody would use them in production anyway. For this reason, we decided to make CONFIG_PM_SLEEP select CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME and that lead to the conclusion that the latter became redundant and CONFIG_PM could be used instead of it. The material here makes that replacement in a major part of the tree, but there will be at least one more batch of that in the second part of the merge window. Specifics: - Support for retrieving device properties information from ACPI _DSD device configuration objects and a unified device properties interface for device drivers (and subsystems) on top of that. As stated above, this works with Device Trees and ACPI and allows device drivers to be written in a platform firmware (DT or ACPI) agnostic way. The at25, leds-gpio and gpio_keys_polled drivers are now going to use this new interface and the GPIO subsystem is additionally modified to allow device drivers to assign names to GPIO resources returned by ACPI _CRS objects (in case _DSD is not present or does not provide the expected data). The changes in this set are mostly from Mika Westerberg, Rafael J Wysocki, Aaron Lu, and Darren Hart with some fixes from others (Fabio Estevam, Geert Uytterhoeven). - Support for Hardware Managed Performance States (HWP) as described in Volume 3, section 14.4, of the Intel SDM in the intel_pstate driver. CPUID is used to detect whether or not the feature is supported by the processor. If supported, it will be enabled automatically unless the intel_pstate=no_hwp switch is present in the kernel command line. From Dirk Brandewie. - New Intel Broadwell-H ID for intel_pstate (Dirk Brandewie). - Support for firmware interface based on ACPI operation regions used by the PMIC chips on the Intel Baytrail-T and Baytrail-T-CR platforms for power resource control and thermal management (Aaron Lu). - Limited support for retrieving off-the-hierarchy dependencies between devices from ACPI _DEP device configuration objects and deferred probing support for the ACPI battery driver based on the _DEP information to make that driver work on Asus T100A (Lan Tianyu). - New cpufreq driver for the Loongson1B processor (Kelvin Cheung). - ACPICA update to upstream revision 20141107 which only affects tools (Bob Moore). - Fixes for race conditions in the ACPICA's interrupt handling code and in the ACPI code related to system suspend and resume (Lv Zheng and Rafael J Wysocki). - ACPI core fix for an RCU-related issue in the ioremap() regions management code that slowed down significantly after CPUs had been allowed to enter idle states even if they'd had RCU callbakcs queued and triggered some problems in certain proprietary graphics driver (and elsewhere). The fix replaces synchronize_rcu() in that code with synchronize_rcu_expedited() which makes the issue go away. From Konstantin Khlebnikov. - ACPI LPSS (Low-Power Subsystem) driver fix to handle power management of the DMA engine included into the LPSS correctly. The problem is that the DMA engine doesn't have ACPI PM support of its own and it simply is turned off when the last LPSS device having ACPI PM support goes into D3cold. To work around that, the PM domain used by the ACPI LPSS driver is redesigned so at least one device with ACPI PM support will be on as long as the DMA engine is in use. From Andy Shevchenko. - ACPI backlight driver fix to avoid using it on "Win8-compatible" systems where it doesn't work and where it was used by default by mistake (Aaron Lu). - Assorted minor ACPI core fixes and cleanups from Tomasz Nowicki, Sudeep Holla, Huang Rui, Hanjun Guo, Fabian Frederick, and Ashwin Chaugule (mostly related to the upcoming ARM64 support). - Intel RAPL (Running Average Power Limit) power capping driver fixes and improvements including new processor IDs (Jacob Pan). - Generic power domains modification to power up domains after attaching devices to them to meet the expectations of device drivers and bus types assuming devices to be accessible at probe time (Ulf Hansson). - Preliminary support for controlling device clocks from the generic power domains core code and modifications of the ARM/shmobile platform to use that feature (Ulf Hansson). - Assorted minor fixes and cleanups of the generic power domains core code (Ulf Hansson, Geert Uytterhoeven). - Assorted minor fixes and cleanups of the device clocks control code in the PM core (Geert Uytterhoeven, Grygorii Strashko). - Consolidation of device power management Kconfig options by making CONFIG_PM_SLEEP select CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME and removing the latter which is now redundant (Rafael J Wysocki and Kevin Hilman). That is the first batch of the changes needed for this purpose. - Core device runtime power management support code cleanup related to the execution of callbacks (Andrzej Hajda). - cpuidle ARM support improvements (Lorenzo Pieralisi). - cpuidle cleanup related to the CPUIDLE_FLAG_TIME_VALID flag and a new MAINTAINERS entry for ARM Exynos cpuidle (Daniel Lezcano and Bartlomiej Zolnierkiewicz). - New cpufreq driver callback (->ready) to be executed when the cpufreq core is ready to use a given policy object and cpufreq-dt driver modification to use that callback for cooling device registration (Viresh Kumar). - cpufreq core fixes and cleanups (Viresh Kumar, Vince Hsu, James Geboski, Tomeu Vizoso). - Assorted fixes and cleanups in the cpufreq-pcc, intel_pstate, cpufreq-dt, pxa2xx cpufreq drivers (Lenny Szubowicz, Ethan Zhao, Stefan Wahren, Petr Cvek). - OPP (Operating Performance Points) framework modification to allow OPPs to be removed too and update of a few cpufreq drivers (cpufreq-dt, exynos5440, imx6q, cpufreq) to remove OPPs (added during initialization) on driver removal (Viresh Kumar). - Hibernation core fixes and cleanups (Tina Ruchandani and Markus Elfring). - PM Kconfig fix related to CPU power management (Pankaj Dubey). - cpupower tool fix (Prarit Bhargava). / -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.22 (GNU/Linux) iQIcBAABCAAGBQJUhj6JAAoJEILEb/54YlRxTM4P/j5g5SfqvY0QKsn7sR7MGZ6v nsgCBhJAqTw3ocNC7EAs8z9h2GWy1KbKpakKYWAh9Fs1yZoey7tFSlcv/Rgjlp70 uU5sDQHtpE9mHKiymdsowiQuWgpl962L4k+k8hUslhlvgk1PvVbpajR6OqG8G+pD asuIW9eh1APNkLyXmRJ3ZPomzs0VmRdZJ0NEs0lKX9mJskqEvxPIwdaxq3iaJq9B Fo0J345zUDcJnxWblDRdHlOigCimglElfN5qJwaC4KpwUKuBvLRKbp4f69+wfT0c kYFiR29X5KjJ2kLfP/wKsLyuDCYYXRq3tCia5M1tAqOjZ+UA89H/GDftx/5lntmv qUlBa35VfdS1SX4HyApZitOHiLgo+It/hl8Z9bJnhyVw66NxmMQ8JYN2imb8Lhqh XCLR7BxLTah82AapLJuQ0ZDHPzZqMPG2veC2vAzRMYzVijict/p4Y2+qBqONltER 4rs9uRVn+hamX33lCLg8BEN8zqlnT3rJFIgGaKjq/wXHAU/zpE9CjOrKMQcAg9+s t51XMNPwypHMAYyGVhEL89ImjXnXxBkLRuquhlmEpvQchIhR+mR3dLsarGn7da44 WPIQJXzcsojXczcwwfqsJCR4I1FTFyQIW+UNh02GkDRgRovQqo+Jk762U7vQwqH+ LBdhvVaS1VW4v+FWXEoZ =5dox -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'pm+acpi-3.19-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rafael/linux-pm Pull ACPI and power management updates from Rafael Wysocki: "This time we have some more new material than we used to have during the last couple of development cycles. To work around that, the PM domain used by the ACPI LPSS driver is redesigned so at least one device with ACPI PM support will be on as long as the DMA engine is in use. make default ->i_fop have ->open() fail with ENXIO
As it is, default ->i_fop has NULL ->open() (along with all other methods). The only case where it matters is reopening (via procfs symlink) a file that didn't get its ->f_op from ->i_fop - anything else will have ->i_fop assigned to something sane (default would fail on read/write/ioctl/etc.). Unfortunately, such case exists - alloc_file() users, especially anon_get_file() ones. There we have tons of opened files of very different kinds sharing the same inode. As the result, attempt to reopen those via procfs succeeds and you get a descriptor you can't do anything with. Moreover, in case of sockets we set ->i_fop that will only be used on such reopen attempts - and put a failing ->open() into it to make sure those do not succeed. It would be simpler to put such ->open() into default ->i_fop and leave it unchanged both for anon inode (as we do anyway) and for socket ones. Result: * everything going through do_dentry_open() works as it used to * sock_no_open() kludge is gone * attempts to reopen anon-inode files fail as they really ought to * ditto for aio_private_file() * ditto for perfmon - this one actually tried to imitate sock_no_open() trick, but failed to set ->i_fop, so in the current tree reopens succeed and yield completely useless descriptor. Intent clearly had been to fail with -ENXIO on such reopens; now it actually does. * everything else that used alloc_file() keeps working - it has ->i_fop set for its inodes anyway Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk> |

Merge branch 'irq-irqdomain-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip
Pull irq domain updates from Thomas Gleixner: "The real interesting irq updates: - Support for hierarchical irq domains: For complex interrupt routing scenarios where more than one interrupt related chip is involved we had no proper representation in the generic interrupt infrastructure so far. That made people implement rather ugly constructs in their nested irq chip implementations. The main offenders are x86 and arm/gic. To distangle that mess we have now hierarchical irqdomains which seperate the various interrupt chips and connect them via the hierarchical domains. That keeps the domain specific details internal to the particular hierarchy level and removes the criss/cross referencing of chip internals. The resulting hierarchy for a complex x86 system will look like this: vector mapped: 74 msi-0 mapped: 2 dmar-ir-1 mapped: 69 ioapic-1 mapped: 4 ioapic-0 mapped: 20 pci-msi-2 mapped: 45 dmar-ir-0 mapped: 3 ioapic-2 mapped: 1 pci-msi-1 mapped: 2 htirq mapped: 0 Neither ioapic nor pci-msi know about the dmar interrupt remapping between themself and the vector domain. If interrupt remapping is disabled ioapic and pci-msi become direct childs of the vector domain. In hindsight we should have done that years ago, but in hindsight we always know better :) - Support for generic MSI interrupt domain handling We have more and more non PCI related MSI interrupts, so providing a generic infrastructure for this is better than having all affected architectures implementing their own private hacks. - Support for PCI-MSI interrupt domain handling, based on the generic MSI support. asm-generic: asm/io.h rewrite
While there normally is no reason to have a pull request for asm-generic but have all changes get merged through whichever tree needs them, I do have a series for 3.19. There are two sets of patches that change significant portions of asm/io.h, and this branch contains both in order to resolve the conflicts: - Will Deacon has done a set of patches to ensure that all architectures define {read,write}{b,w,l,q}_relaxed() functions or get them by including asm-generic/io.h. These functions are commonly used on ARM specific drivers to avoid expensive L2 cache synchronization implied by the normal {read, write}{b,w,l,q}, but we need to define them on all architectures in order to share the drivers across architectures and to enable CONFIG_COMPILE_TEST configurations for them - Thierry Reding has done an unrelated set of patches that extends the asm-generic/io.h file to the degree necessary to make it useful on ARM64 and potentially other architectures. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.12 (GNU/Linux) iQIVAwUAVIdwNmCrR//JCVInAQJWuw/9FHt2ThMnI1J1Jqy4CVwtyjWTSa6Y/uVj xSytS7AOvmU/nw1quSoba5mN9fcUQUtK9kqjqNcq71WsQcDE6BF9SFpi9cWtjWcI ZfWsC+5kqry/mbnuHefENipem9RqBrLbOBJ3LARf5M8rZJuTz1KbdZs9r9+1QsCX ou8jeqVvNKUn9J1WyekJBFSrPOtZ4bCUpeyh23JHRfPtJeAHNOuPuymj6WceAz98 uMV1icRaCBMySsf9HgsHRYW5HwuCm3MrrYj6ukyPpgxYz7FRq4hJLDs6GnlFtAGb 71g87NpFdB32qbW+y1ntfYaJyUryMHMVHBWcV5H9m0btdHTRHYZjoOGOPuyLHHO8 +l4/FaOQhnDL8cNDj0HKfhdlyaFylcWgs1wzj68nv31c1dGjcJcQiyCDwry9mJhr erh4EewcerUvWzbBMQ4JP1f8syKMsKwbo1bVU61a1RQJxEqVCzJMLweGSOFmqMX2 6E4ZJVWv81UFLoFTzYx+7+M45K4NWywKNQdzwKmqKHc4OQyvq4ALJI0A7SGFJdDR HJ7VqDiLaSdBitgJcJUxNzKcyXij6wE9jE1fBe3YDFE4LrnZXFVLN+MX6hs7AIFJ vJM1UpxRxQUMGIH2m7rbDNazOAsvQGxINOjNor23cNLuf6qLY1LrpHVPQDAfJVvA 6tROM77bwIQ= =xUv6 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'asm-generic-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic Pull asm-generic asm/io.h rewrite from Arnd Bergmann: "While there normally is no reason to have a pull request for asm-generic but have all changes get merged through whichever tree needs them, I do have a series for 3.19. net: introduce SO_INCOMING_CPU
Alternative to RPS/RFS is to use hardware support for multiple queues. Then split a set of million of sockets into worker threads, each one using epoll() to manage events on its own socket pool. Ideally, we want one thread per RX/TX queue/cpu, but we have no way to know after accept() or connect() on which queue/cpu a socket is managed. We normally use one cpu per RX queue (IRQ smp_affinity being properly set), so remembering on socket structure which cpu delivered last packet is enough to solve the problem. After accept(), connect(), or even file descriptor passing around processes, applications can use : int cpu; socklen_t len = sizeof(cpu); getsockopt(fd, SOL_SOCKET, SO_INCOMING_CPU, &cpu, &len); And use this information to put the socket into the right silo for optimal performance, as all networking stack should run on the appropriate cpu, without need to send IPI (RPS/RFS). This patch adds dummy macros for the write accessors to ia64, which may be able to be optimised in a similar manner to the relaxed read accessors at a later date. Merge git://git.infradead.org/users/eparis/audit
Pull audit updates from Eric Paris: "So this change across a whole bunch of arches really solves one basic problem. We want to audit when seccomp is killing a process. seccomp hooks in before the audit syscall entry code. audit_syscall_entry took as an argument the arch of the given syscall. Since the arch is part of what makes a syscall number meaningful it's an important part of the record, but it isn't available when seccomp shoots the syscall... For most arch's we have a better way to get the arch (syscall_get_arch) So the solution was two fold: Implement syscall_get_arch() everywhere there is audit which didn't have it. Use syscall_get_arch() in the seccomp audit code. Having syscall_get_arch() everywhere meant it was a useless flag on the stack and we could get rid of it for the typical syscall entry. The other changes inside the audit system aren't grand, fixed some records that had invalid spaces. Better locking around the task comm field. Removing some dead functions and structs. Make some things static. Merge branch 'for-3.18-consistent-ops' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tj/percpu
Pull percpu consistent-ops changes from Tejun Heo: "Way back, before the current percpu allocator was implemented, static and dynamic percpu memory areas were allocated and handled separately and had their own accessors. The distinction has been gone for many years now; however, the now duplicate two sets of accessors remained with the pointer based ones - this_cpu_*() - evolving various other operations over time. During the process, we also accumulated other inconsistent operations. This pull request contains Christoph's patches to clean up the duplicate accessor situation. __get_cpu_var() uses are replaced with with this_cpu_ptr() and __this_cpu_ptr() with raw_cpu_ptr(). Unfortunately, the former sometimes is tricky thanks to C being a bit messy with the distinction between lvalues and pointers, which led to a rather ugly solution for cpumask_var_t involving the introduction of this_cpu_cpumask_var_ptr(). This converts most of the uses but not all. Christoph will follow up with the remaining conversions in this merge window and hopefully remove the obsolete accessors" * 'for-3.18-consistent-ops' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tj/percpu: (38 commits) irqchip: Properly fetch the per cpu offset percpu: Resolve ambiguities in __get_cpu_var/cpumask_var_t -fix ia64: sn_nodepda cannot be assigned to after this_cpu conversion. Apart from the usual cleanups, here is the summary of new features: - s390 moves closer towards host large page support - PowerPC has improved support for debugging (both inside the guest and via gdbstub) and support for e6500 processors - ARM/ARM64 support read-only memory (which is necessary to put firmware in emulated NOR flash) - x86 has the usual emulator fixes and nested virtualization improvements (including improved Windows support on Intel and Jailhouse hypervisor support on AMD), adaptive PLE which helps overcommitting of huge guests. Also included are some patches that make KVM more friendly to memory hot-unplug, and fixes for rare caching bugs. Two patches have trivial mm/ parts that were acked by Rik and Andrew. Note: I will soon switch to a subkey for signing purposes. To verify future signed pull requests from me, please update my key with "gpg --recv-keys 9B4D86F2". You should see 3 new subkeys---the one for signing will be a 2048-bit RSA key, 4E6B09D7. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.22 (GNU/Linux) iQIcBAABAgAGBQJUL5sPAAoJEBvWZb6bTYbyfkEP/3MNhSyn6HCjPjtjLNPAl9KL WpExZSUFL2+4CztpdGIsek1BeJYHmqv3+c5S+WvaWVA1aqh2R7FT1D1ErBLjgLQq lq23IOr+XxmC3dXQUEEk+TlD+283UzypzEG4l4UD3JYg79fE3UrXAz82SeyewJDY x7aPYhkZG3RHu+wAyMPasG6E3zS5LySdUtGWbiPwz5BejrhBJoJdeb2WIL/RwnUK 7ppSLB5EoFj/uMkuyeAAdAbdfSrhHA6faDZxNdxS9k9wGutrhhfUoQ49ONrKG4dV sFo1tSPTVgRs8QFYUZ2fJUPBAmUVddsgqh2K9d0NftGTq7b8YszaCsfFrs2/Y4MU YxssWEhxsfszerCu12bbAJrv6JBZYQ7TwGvI9L7P0iFU6IVw/djmukU4AkM9/e91 YS/cue/PN+9Pn2ccXzL9J7xRtZb8FsOuRsCXTCmbOwDkLmrKPDBN2t3RUbeF+Eam ABrpWnLKX13kZSo4LKU+/niarzmPMp7odQfHVdr8ea0fiYLp4iN8puA20WaSPIgd CLvm+RAvXe5Lm91L4mpFotJ2uFyK6QlIYJV4FsgeWv/0D0qppWQi0Utb/aCNHCgy z8MyUMD48y7EpoQrFYr/7cddXIu0/NegnM8I1coVjIPEk4NfeebGUlCJ/V3D8wMG BgEfS2x6jRc5zB3hjwDr =iEVi -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/virt/kvm/kvm Pull KVM updates from Paolo Bonzini: "Fixes and features for 3.18. PCI/MSI: Use __get_cached_msi_msg() instead of get_cached_msi_msg()
Both callers of get_cached_msi_msg() start with a struct irq_data pointer, look up the corresponding IRQ number, and pass it to get_cached_msi_msg(), which then uses irq_get_irq_data() to look up the struct irq_data again to call __get_cached_msi_msg(). Since we already have the struct irq_data, call __get_cached_msi_msg() directly and skip the lookup work done by get_cached_msi_msg(). No functional change. kexec: remove CONFIG_KEXEC dependency on crypto
New system call depends on crypto. As it did not have a separate config option, CONFIG_KEXEC was modified to select CRYPTO and CRYPTO_SHA256. ia64: Replace __get_cpu_var uses
__get_cpu_var() is used for multiple purposes in the kernel source. One of them is address calculation via the form &__get_cpu_var(x). This calculates the address for the instance of the percpu variable of the current processor based on an offset. Other use cases are for storing and retrieving data from the current processors percpu area. __get_cpu_var() can be used as an lvalue when writing data or on the right side of an assignment. __get_cpu_var() is defined as : #define __get_cpu_var(var) (*this_cpu_ptr(&(var))) __get_cpu_var() always only does an address determination. However, store and retrieve operations could use a segment prefix (or global register on other platforms) to avoid the address calculation. this_cpu_write() and this_cpu_read() can directly take an offset into a percpu area and use optimized assembly code to read and write per cpu variables. This patch converts __get_cpu_var into either an explicit address calculation using this_cpu_ptr() or into a use of this_cpu operations that use the offset. Thereby address calculations are avoided and less registers are used when code is generated. At the end of the patch set all uses of __get_cpu_var have been removed so the macro is removed too. The patch set includes passes over all arches as well. Once these operations are used throughout then specialized macros can be defined in non -x86 arches as well in order to optimize per cpu access by f.e. using a global register that may be set to the per cpu base. Transformations done to __get_cpu_var() 1. Determine the address of the percpu instance of the current processor. DEFINE_PER_CPU(int, y); int *x = &__get_cpu_var(y); Converts to int *x = this_cpu_ptr(&y); 2. Same as #1 but this time an array structure is involved. DEFINE_PER_CPU(int, y[20]); int *x = __get_cpu_var(y); Converts to int *x = this_cpu_ptr(y); 3. Retrieve the content of the current processors instance of a per cpu variable. DEFINE_PER_CPU(int, y); int x = __get_cpu_var(y) Converts to int x = __this_cpu_read(y); 4. Retrieve the content of a percpu struct DEFINE_PER_CPU(struct mystruct, y); struct mystruct x = __get_cpu_var(y); Converts to memcpy(&x, this_cpu_ptr(&y), sizeof(x)); 5. Assignment to a per cpu variable DEFINE_PER_CPU(int, y) __get_cpu_var(y) = x; Converts to __this_cpu_write(y, x); 6. Increment/Decrement etc of a per cpu variable DEFINE_PER_CPU(int, y); __get_cpu_var(y)++ Converts to __this_cpu_inc(y) Cc: Tony Luck <tony.luck@intel.com> Cc: Fenghua Yu <fenghua.yu@intel.com> Cc: linux-ia64@vger.kernel.org Signed-off-by: Christoph Lameter <cl@linux.com> Signed-off-by: Tejun Heo <tj@kernel.org> |

kexec: load and relocate purgatory at kernel load time
Load purgatory code in RAM and relocate it based on the location. Relocation code has been inspired by module relocation code and purgatory relocation code in kexec-tools. Also compute the checksums of loaded kexec segments and store them in purgatory. Arch independent code provides this functionality so that arch dependent bootloaders can make use of it. Helper functions are provided to get/set symbol values in purgatory which are used by bootloaders later to set things like stack and entry point of second kernel etc. Signed-off-by: Vivek Goyal <vgoyal@redhat.com> Cc: Borislav Petkov <bp@suse.de> Cc: Michael Kerrisk <mtk.manpages@gmail.com> Cc: Yinghai Lu <yinghai@kernel.org> Cc: Eric Biederman <ebiederm@xmission.com> Cc: H. arm64,ia64,ppc,s390,sh,tile,um,x86,mm: remove default gate area
The core mm code will provide a default gate area based on FIXADDR_USER_START and FIXADDR_USER_END if !defined(__HAVE_ARCH_GATE_AREA) && defined(AT_SYSINFO_EHDR). This default is only useful for ia64. arm64, ppc, s390, sh, tile, 64-bit UML, and x86_32 have their own code just to disable it. arm, 32-bit UML, and x86_64 have gate areas, but they have their own implementations. This gets rid of the default and moves the code into ia64. This should save some code on architectures without a gate area: it's now possible to inline the gate_area functions in the default case. Here are the PPC and ARM changes for KVM, which I separated because
they had small conflicts (respectively within KVM documentation, and with 3.16-rc changes). Since they were all within the subsystem, I took care of them. Stephen Rothwell reported some snags in PPC builds, but they are all fixed now; the latest linux-next report was clean. New features for ARM include: - KVM VGIC v2 emulation on GICv3 hardware - Big-Endian support for arm/arm64 (guest and host) - Debug Architecture support for arm64 (arm32 is on Christoffer's todo list) And for PPC: - Book3S: Good number of LE host fixes, enable HV on LE - Book3S HV: Add in-guest debug support This release drops support for KVM on the PPC440. As a result, the PPC merge removes more lines than it adds. :) I also included an x86 change, since Davidlohr tied it to an independent bug report and the reporter quickly provided a Tested-by; there was no reason to wait for -rc2. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.22 (GNU/Linux) iQIcBAABAgAGBQJT4iIJAAoJEBvWZb6bTYbyZqoP/3Wxy8NWPFJ8HGt81NHlGnDS a9UbL7EibcOEG+aaKqmtBglTD5YDiGBDNCxxiSJaDHt+grLN4fsWIliJob1nJFoO 90f89EWN2XjeCrJXA5nUoeg5tpc5OoYKsiP6pTgzIwkP8vvs/H1+zpcTS/UmYsr/ qipVMMsM+zZeHWZcSbqjW88z7YqIn1sr5282wJ85cbyv4KGizb/G4dyPuDqLb6np hkAD8Ah6VV2suQ2FSy7G2fg20R0vglUi60hkEHLoCBPVqJCl7SmC8MvxNbjBnP8S J36R0R0u1wHYKzAGooLJGVOZ/o/gSiVqKX+++L2EvJBN+kuA6u/7fxLyBT+LwDAE IF/Aln5rpg1fe+eywvhz86WljTVEQ8bO1zVsIQUPY+/ZOPedZHMwyvXft8ogbjSp 2m9OJ/3e8Aggh0OeHpCDoeow+QDUXvX0YdCw+2Yh0p+7VMXqkyp0QEiBu38jrusC rB3VNifJbDSWLKdG9LfCAPHnxZD2XYEwv2WFBo6KQOGMGHfx0GXpCOL/jQihrhA6 HtEG5Bs3lvnHQemdpUZ58xojiABbMaUPdcnPXQQEp23WhZzrfLMLzqVG0VYnhSsC 9pi7MJj8c31rqx5WU2oRM28i/BvNxN0NCtkDpineO5s3f89Ws1xnwxqlm38AKP0J irJQTYFEqec+GM9JK1rG =hyQP -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/virt/kvm/kvm Pull second round of KVM changes from Paolo Bonzini: "Here are the PPC and ARM changes for KVM, which I separated because they had small conflicts (respectively within KVM documentation, and with 3.16-rc changes). Some of it definitely belongs into the ugly code museum. - Consolidation of the timekeeping interface zoo. - A fast NMI safe accessor to clock monotonic for tracing. This is a long standing request to support correlated user/kernel space traces. KVM: Give IRQFD its own separate enabling Kconfig option
Currently, the IRQFD code is conditional on CONFIG_HAVE_KVM_IRQ_ROUTING. So that we can have the IRQFD code compiled in without having the IRQ routing code, this creates a new CONFIG_HAVE_KVM_IRQFD, makes the IRQFD code conditional on it instead of CONFIG_HAVE_KVM_IRQ_ROUTING, and makes all the platforms that currently select HAVE_KVM_IRQ_ROUTING also select HAVE_KVM_IRQFD. [IA64] sn: Do not needlessly convert between pointers and integers
The nasid_to_try variable is an array of integers, so plain integers can be used when assigning values to the elements rather than casting a NULL pointer to an integer, which results in the following warning from GCC: arch/ia64/sn/kernel/bte.c:117:22: warning: cast from pointer to integer of different size [-Wpointer-to-int-cast] nasid_to_try[1] = (int)NULL; ^ arch/ia64/sn/kernel/bte.c:125:22: warning: cast from pointer to integer of different size [-Wpointer-to-int-cast] nasid_to_try[1] = (int)NULL; ^ Replace (int)NULL with a simple 0 to silence these warnings.
