The tm-poison test includes inline asm which is 64-bit only, so the
test must be built 64-bit in order to work.
Otherwise it fails, eg:

The ahci driver doesn't support error recovery, and if your root
filesystem is attached to it the eeh-basic.sh test will likely kill
your machine.
So skip any device we see using the ahci driver.

We added a usage of try-run to pmu/ebb/Makefile to detect if the
toolchain supported the -no-pie option.
This fails if we build out-of-tree and the source tree is not
writable, as try-run tries to write its temporary files to the current
directory. That leads to the -no-pie option being silently dropped,
which leads to broken executables with some toolchains.
If we remove the redirect to /dev/null in try-run, we see the error:

Some specific tests in powerpc can take longer than the default 45
seconds that added in commit 852c8cbf34 ("selftests/kselftest/runner.sh:
Add 45 second timeout per test") to run, the following test result was
collected across 2 Power8 nodes and 1 Power9 node in our pool:

for these sub-tests to allow them finish properly.

The test case tm-signal-context-force-tm expects a segfault to happen
on returning from signal handler, and then does a setcontext() to run
the test again. However, the test doesn't always segfault, causing the
test to run a single time.
This patch fixes the test by putting it within a loop and jumping, via
setcontext, just prior to the loop in case it segfaults. This way we
get the desired behavior (run the test COUNT_MAX times) regardless if
it segfaults or not. This also reduces the use of setcontext for
control flow logic, keeping it only in the segfault handler.
Also, since 'count' is changed within the signal handler, it is
declared as volatile to prevent any compiler optimization getting
confused with asynchronous changes.

This test triggers a TM Bad Thing by raising a signal in transactional state
and forcing a pagefault to happen in kernelspace when the kernel signal
handling code first touches the user signal stack.
This is inspired by the test tm-signal-context-force-tm but uses userfaultfd to
make the test deterministic. While this test always triggers the bug in one
run, I had to execute tm-signal-context-force-tm several times (the test runs
5000 times each execution) to trigger the same bug.
tm-signal-context-force-tm is kept instead of replaced because, while this test
is more reliable and triggers the same bug, tm-signal-context-force-tm has a
better coverage, in the sense that by running the test several times it might
trigger the pagefault and/or be preempted at different places.

There's two different paths through the sigreturn code, depending on
whether the VDSO is mapped or not. We recently discovered a bug in the
unmapped case, because it's not commonly used these days.
So add a test that sends itself a signal, then moves the VDSO, takes
another signal and finally unmaps the VDSO before sending itself
another signal. That tests the standard signal path, the code that
handles the VDSO being moved, and also the signal path in the case
where the VDSO is unmapped.

Some newer cards supported by aacraid can take up to 40s to recover
after an EEH event. This causes spurious failures in the basic EEH
self-test since the current maximim timeout is only 30s.
Fix the immediate issue by bumping the timeout to a default of 60s,
and allow the wait time to be specified via an environmental variable
(EEH_MAX_WAIT).

Userspace isn't allowed to access certain address ranges, make sure we
actually test that to at least some degree.
This would have caught the recent bug where the SLB fault handler was
incorrectly called on an out-of-range access when using the Radix MMU.
It also would have caught the bug we had in get_region_id() where we
were inserting SLB entries for bad addresses.

On the 8xx, signals are generated after executing the instruction. So
no need to manually single-step on 8xx. Also, 8xx __set_dabr()
currently ignores length and hardcodes the length to 8 bytes. So all
unaligned and 512 byte testcase will fail on 8xx. Ignore those
testcases on 8xx.

ptrace-hwbreak.c selftest is logically broken. On powerpc, when
watchpoint is created with ptrace, signals are generated before
executing the instruction and user has to manually singlestep the
instruction with watchpoint disabled, which selftest never does and
thus it keeps on getting the signal at the same instruction. If we fix
it, selftest fails because the logical connection between
tracer(parent) and tracee(child) is also broken. Rewrite the selftest
and add new tests for unaligned access.

Some of our TM (Transactional Memory) tests, list "r1" (the stack
pointer) as a clobbered register.
GCC >= 9 doesn't accept this, and the build breaks:

We do have some fairly large inline asm blocks in these tests, and
some of them do change the value of r1. However they should all return
to C with the value in r1 restored, so I think it's legitimate to say
r1 is not clobbered.
As Segher points out, the r1 clobbers may have been added because of
the use of `or 1,1,1`, however that doesn't actually clobber r1.
Segher also points out that some of these tests do clobber LR, because
they call functions, and that is not listed in the clobbers, so add
that where appropriate.

The defaults for the sigfuz test is to run for 4000 iterations, but
that can take quite a while and the test harness may kill the test.
Reduce the number of iterations to 600, which gives a runtime of
roughly 1 minute on a Power8 system.

Use the new eeh_dev_check and eeh_dev_break interfaces to test EEH
recovery. Historically this has been done manually using platform specific
EEH error injection facilities (e.g. via RTAS). However, documentation on
how to use these facilities is haphazard at best and non-existent at worst
so it's hard to develop a cross-platform test.
The new debugfs interfaces allow the kernel to handle the platform specific
details so we can write a more generic set of sets. This patch adds the
most basic of recovery tests where:
a) Errors are injected and recovered from sequentially,
b) Errors are not injected into PCI-PCI bridges, such as PCIe switches.
c) Errors are only injected into device function zero.
d) No errors are injected into Virtual Functions.
a), b) and c) are largely due to limitations of Linux's EEH support. EEH
recovery is serialised in the EEH recovery thread which forces a).
Similarly, multi-function PCI devices are almost always grouped into the
same PE so injecting an error on one function exercises the same code
paths. c) is because we currently more or less ignore PCI bridges during
recovery and assume that the recovered topology will be the same as the
original.
d) is due to the limits of the eeh_dev_break interface. With the current
implementation we can't inject an error into a specific VF without
potentially causing additional errors on other VFs. Due to the serialised
recovery process we might end up timing out waiting for another function to
recover before the function of interest is recovered. The platform specific
error injection facilities are finer-grained and allow this capability, but
doing that requires working out how to use those facilities first.
Basicly, it's better than nothing and it's a base to build on.

TM test tm-unavailable must take into account aborts due to host aborting
a transactin because of a facility unavailable exception, just like it
already does for aborts on reschedules (TM_CAUSE_KVM_RESCHED).

Currently TM signal context tests for GPR, FPR, VMX, and VSX registers
print wrong register numbers (wrongly starting from register 0 instead
of the first register in the non-volatile subset). Besides it the
output when a mismatch happens is poor giving not much information
about which context and which register mismatches, because it prints
both contexts at the same time and not a comparison between the value
that mismatches and the value expected and, moreover, it stops
printing on the first mismatch, but it's important to know if there
are other mismatches happening beyond the first one.

are not ignored by git, so 'git status' catch them.
For copyloops test, fix wrong binary names already in .gitignore. For
ptrace, security, and stringloops tests add missing binary names to the
.gitignore file.

In some cases, compiler can allocate the same register for operand 'res'
and 'vecoutptr', resulting in segfault at 'stxvd2x 40,0,%[vecoutptr]'
because base register will contain 1, yielding a false-positive.
This is because output 'res' must be marked as an earlyclobber operand so
it may not overlap an input operand ('vecoutptr').

This merges a fix for a bug in our context id handling on 64-bit hash
CPUs.
The fix was written against v5.1 to ease backporting to stable
releases. Here we are merging it up to a v5.2-rc2 base, which involves
a bit of manual resolution.
It also adds a test case for the bug.

This is a new selftest that raises SIGUSR1 signals and handles it in a
set of different ways, trying to create different scenario for testing
purpose.
This test works raising a signal and calling sigreturn interleaved
with TM operations, as starting, suspending and terminating a
transaction. The test depends on random numbers, and, based on them,
it sets different TM states.
Other than that, the test fills out the user context struct that is
passed to the sigreturn system call with random data, in order to make
sure that the signal handler syscall can handle different and invalid
states properly.
This selftest has command line parameters to control what kind of
tests the user wants to run, as for example, if a transaction should
be started prior to signal being raised, or, after the signal being
raised and before the sigreturn. If no parameter is given, the default
is enabling all options.
This test does not check if the user context is being read and set
properly by the kernel. Its purpose, at this time, is basically
guaranteeing that the kernel does not crash on invalid scenarios.

CONFIG_KASAN implements wrappers for memcpy() memmove() and memset()
Those wrappers are doing the verification then call respectively
__memcpy() __memmove() and __memset(). The arches are therefore
expected to rename their optimised functions that way.
For files on which KASAN is inhibited, #defines are used to allow
them to directly call optimised versions of the functions without
going through the KASAN wrappers.
See commit 393f203f5f ("x86_64: kasan: add interceptors for
memset/memmove/memcpy functions") for details.
Other string / mem functions do not (yet) have kasan wrappers,
we therefore have to fallback to the generic versions when
KASAN is active, otherwise KASAN checks will be skipped.

A new self test that forces MSR[TS] to be set without calling any TM
instruction. This test also tries to cause a page fault at a signal
handler, exactly between MSR[TS] set and tm_recheckpoint(), forcing
thread->texasr to be rewritten with TEXASR[FS] = 0, which will cause a BUG
when tm_recheckpoint() is called.
This test is not deterministic, since it is hard to guarantee that the page
access will cause a page fault. In order to force more page faults at
signal context, the signal handler and the ucontext are being mapped into a
MADV_DONTNEED memory chunks.
Tests have shown that the bug could be exposed with few interactions in a
buggy kernel. This test is configured to loop 5000x, having a good chance
to hit the kernel issue in just one run. This self test takes less than
two seconds to run.
This test uses set/getcontext because the kernel will recheckpoint
zeroed structures, causing the test to segfault, which is undesired because
the test needs to rerun, so, there is a signal handler for SIGSEGV which
will restart the test.

This is a new test case that creates a signal and starts a suspended
transaction inside the signal handler.
It returns from the signal handler with the CPU at suspended state, but
without setting user context MSR Transaction State (TS) field.
The kernel signal handler code should be able to handle this discrepancy
instead of crashing.
This code could be compiled and used to test 32 and 64-bits signal
handlers.

Current core-pkey selftest fails if the test runs without privileges to
write into the core pattern file (/proc/sys/kernel/core_pattern). This
causes the test to fail and give the impression that the subsystem being
tested is broken, when, in fact, the test is being executed without the
proper privileges. This is the current error:

Some ptrace selftests are passing input operands using a constraint that
can allocate any register for the operand, and using these registers on
load/store operations.
If the register allocated by the compiler happens to be zero (r0), it might
cause an invalid memory address access, since load and store operations
consider the content of 0x0 address if the base register is r0, instead of
the content of the r0 register. For example:
r1 := 0xdeadbeef
r0 := 0xdeadbeef
ld r2, 0(1) /* will load into r2 the content of r1 address */
ld r2, 0(0) /* will load into r2 the content of 0x0 */
In order to avoid this possible problem, the inline assembly constraint
should be aware that these registers will be used as a base register, thus,
r0 should not be allocated.
Other than that, this patch removes inline assembly operands that are not
used by the tests.

Currently the selftest wild_bctr can fail to build when an old gcc is
used, notably on gcc using a binutils version <= 2.27, because the
assembler does not support the integer suffix UL.
This patch adjusts the wild_bctr test so the REG_POISON value is still
treated as an unsigned long for the shifts on compilation but the UL
suffix is absent on the stringification, so the inline asm code
generated has no UL suffixes.

The selftest I recently added to test branching to an out-of-bounds
NIP doesn't work on 64-bit big endian. It does fail but not in the
right way. That is it SEGVs trying to load from the opd at BAD_NIP,
but it never gets as far as branching to BAD_NIP.
To fix it we need to create an opd which is reachable but which holds
the bad address.

We are using 'dscr_insn' as a label in inline asm to identify if a
SIGILL was generated by the mtspr instruction at that point. However,
with inline assembly, the compiler is still free to duplicate the asm
statement for optimization purposes, which results in the label being
defined twice with the error:
/tmp/ccerQCql.s:874: Error: symbol `dscr_insn' is already defined
With different compiler versions, we may also see:
/tmp/ccJzLDlN.o:(.toc+0x0): undefined reference to `dscr_insn'
Remove the use of the label in the inline assembly. Instead, just look
for the offending instruction in the signal handler.

When running the ebb tests after building on a ppc64le Ubuntu machine:

When running the rfi_flush test, if the system is loaded, we see two
issues:
1. The L1d misses when rfi_flush is disabled increase significantly due
to other workloads interfering with the cache.
2. The L1d misses when rfi_flush is enabled sometimes goes slightly
below the expected number of misses.
To address these, let's relax the expected number of L1d misses:
1. When rfi_flush is disabled, we allow upto half the expected number of
the misses for when rfi_flush is enabled.
2. When rfi_flush is enabled, we allow ~1% lower number of cache misses.

Test ptrace-tm-spd-gpr fails on current kernel (4.19) due to a segmentation
fault that happens on the child process prior to setting cptr[2] = 1. This
causes the parent process to wait forever at 'while (!pptr[2])' and the test to
be killed by the test harness framework by timeout, thus, failing.
The segmentation fault happens because of a inline assembly being
generated as:
0x10000355c <tm_spd_gpr+492> lfs f0, 0(0)
This is reading memory position 0x0 and causing the segmentation fault.
This code is being generated by ASM_LOAD_FPR_SINGLE_PRECISION(flt_4), where
flt_4 is passed to the inline assembly block as:
[flt_4] "r" (&d)
Since the inline assembly 'r' constraint means any GPR, gpr0 is being
chosen, thus causing this issue when issuing a Load Floating-Point Single
instruction.
This patch simply changes the constraint to 'b', which specify that this
register will be used as base, and r0 is not allowed to be used, avoiding
this issue.
Other than that, removing flt_2 register from the input operands, since it
is not used by the inline assembly code at all.

This adds a test to verify proper functioning of the rfi flush
capability implemented to mitigate meltdown. The test works by
measuring the number of L1d cache misses encountered while loading
data from memory. Across a system call, since the L1d cache is flushed
when rfi_flush is enabled, the number of cache misses is expected to
be relative to the number of cachelines corresponding to the data
being loaded.
The current system setting is reflected via powerpc/rfi_flush under
debugfs (assumed to be /sys/kernel/debug/). This test verifies the
expected result with rfi_flush enabled as well as when it is disabled.

This patch adds a new test for the new PTRACE_SYSEMU ptrace request.
This test also relies on PTRACE_GETREGS and PTRACE_SETREGS requests to
run properly, since the trace instruction (gettid() syscall) is being
modified at run-time (by PTRACE_SETREGS) and re-executed three times.
PTRACE_GETREGS is being used to check that the registers are still
sane.
This test basically creates a child process that executes syscalls
and the parent process check if it is being traced appropriately. The
parent process guarantees that the SYSCALLs are being traced, with
PTRACE_SYSEMU, and ptrace stops the child application before a syscall is
executed. The way the tests validates it, is by guaranteeing that the
system calls arguments, as argv[0] (r3) which is the same register that
will have the syscall return value on powerpc, are not being corrupted on
PTRACE_SYSEMU with a return value, i.e, it continues to have the current
arguments instead, meaning that the registers where not clobbered.
This test is basically the same test for x86 located at
tools/testing/selftests/x86/ptrace_syscall.c, limited to test PTRACE_SYSEMU
request, and ported to PowerPC.

Commit b2d35fa5fc ("selftests: add headers_install to lib.mk")
introduced a requirement that Makefiles more than one level below the
selftests directory need to define top_srcdir, but it didn't update
any of the powerpc Makefiles.
This broke building all the powerpc selftests with eg:

There are cases where the test is not expecting to have the transaction
aborted, but, the test process might have been rescheduled, either in the
OS level or by KVM (if it is running on a KVM guest machine). The process
reschedule will cause a treclaim/recheckpoint which will cause the
transaction to doom, aborting the transaction as soon as the process is
rescheduled back to the CPU. This might cause the test to fail, but this is
not a failure in essence.
If that is the case, TEXASR[FC] is indicated with either
TM_CAUSE_RESCHEDULE or TM_CAUSE_KVM_RESCHEDULE for KVM interruptions.
In this scenario, ignore these two failures and avoid the whole test to
return failure.

Test tm-tmspr might exit before all threads stop executing, because it just
waits for the very last thread to join before proceeding/exiting.
This patch makes sure that all threads that were created will join before
proceeding/exiting.
This patch also guarantees that the amount of threads being created is equal
to thread_num.

There are some powerpc selftests, as tm/tm-unavailable, that run for a long
period (>120 seconds), and if it is interrupted, as pressing CRTL-C
(SIGINT), the foreground process (harness) dies but the child process and
threads continue to execute (with PPID = 1 now) in background.
In this case, you'd think the whole test exited, but there are remaining
threads and processes being executed in background. Sometimes these
zombies processes are doing annoying things, as consuming the whole CPU or
dumping things to STDOUT.
This patch fixes this problem by attaching an empty signal handler to
SIGINT in the harness process. This handler will interrupt (EINTR) the
parent process waitpid() call, letting the code to follow through the
normal flow, which will kill all the processes in the child process group.
This patch also fixes a typo.

This adds a set of test cases to test the behaviour of
copy_tofrom_user when exceptions are encountered accessing the
source or destination. Currently, copy_tofrom_user does not always
copy as many bytes as possible when an exception occurs on a store
to the destination, and that is reflected in failures in these tests.

The hand-coded assembler 64-bit copy routines include feature sections
that select one code path or another depending on which CPU we are
executing on. The self-tests for these copy routines end up testing
just one path. This adds a mechanism for selecting any desired code
path at compile time, and makes 2 or 3 versions of each test, each
using a different code path, so as to cover all the possible paths.

Currently the alignment_handler test prints "Can't open /dev/fb0"
about 80 times per run, which is a little annoying.
Refactor it to check earlier if it can open /dev/fb0 and skip if not,
this results in each test printing something like:

This patch adds a test for strlen()
string.c contains a copy of strlen() from lib/string.c
The test first tests the correctness of strlen() by comparing
the result with libc strlen(). It tests all cases of alignment.
It them tests the duration of an aligned strlen() on a 4 bytes string,
on a 16 bytes string and on a 256 bytes string.

This is a test of the ISA 3.0 "copy" instruction. That instruction has
an L field, which if set to 1 specifies that "the instruction
identifies the beginning of a move group" (pp 858). That's also
referred to as "copy first" vs "copy".
In ISA 3.0B the copy instruction does not have an L field, and the
corresponding bit in the instruction must be set to 1.
This test is generating a "copy" instruction, not a "copy first", and
so on Power9 (which implements 3.0B), this results in an illegal
instruction.
So just drop the test entirely. We still have copy_first_unaligned to
test the "copy first" behaviour.

There is a buffer overflow in dscr_inherit_test.c test. In main(), strncpy()'s
third argument is the length of the source, not the size of the destination
buffer, which makes strncpy() behaves like strcpy(), causing a buffer overflow
if argv[0] is bigger than LEN_MAX (100).
This patch maps 'prog' to the argv[0] memory region, removing the static
allocation and the LEN_MAX size restriction.

The exec_target binary could segfault calling _exit(2) because r13
is not set up properly (and libc looks at that when performing a
syscall). Call SYS_exit using syscall(2) which doesn't seem to
have this problem.

The recent commit 15a3204d24 ("powerpc/64s: Set assembler machine
type to POWER4") set the machine type in our ASFLAGS when building the
kernel, and removed some ".machine power4" directives from various asm
files.
This broke the selftests build on old toolchains (that don't assume
Power4), because we build the kernel source files into the selftests
using different ASFLAGS.
The fix is simply to add -mpower4 to the selftest ASFLAGS as well.

Merge our fixes branch from the 4.16 cycle.
There were a number of important fixes merged, in particular some Power9
workarounds that we want in next for testing purposes. There's also been
some conflicting changes in the CPU features code which are best merged
and tested before going upstream.
Some processor revisions do not support transactional memory, and
additionally kernel support can be disabled. In either case the
tm-unavailable test should be skipped, otherwise it will fail with
a SIGILL.
That commit also sets this selftest to be called through the test
harness as it's done for other TM selftests.
Finally, it avoids using "ping" as a thread name since it's
ambiguous and can be confusing when shown, for instance,
in a kernel backtrace log.

The subpage_prot syscall is only functional when the system is using
the Hash MMU. Since commit 5b2b807147 ("powerpc/mm: Invalidate
subpage_prot() system call on radix platforms") it returns ENOENT when
the Radix MMU is active. Currently this just makes the test fail.
Additionally the syscall is not available if the kernel is built with
4K pages, or if CONFIG_PPC_SUBPAGE_PROT=n, in which case it returns
ENOSYS because the syscall is missing entirely.
So check explicitly for ENOENT and ENOSYS and skip if we see either of
those.

The tm-resched-dscr test links against pmu/lib.o, but we don't have a
rule to clean pmu/lib.o. This can lead to a build break if you build
for big endian and then little, or vice versa.
Fix it by making tm-resched-dscr depend on pmu/lib.c, causing the code
to be built directly in, meaning no .o is generated.

With glibc 2.26 'struct ucontext' is removed to improve POSIX
compliance, which breaks powerpc/alignment_handler selftest. Fix the
test by using ucontext_t. Tested on ppc, works with older glibc
versions as well.

Add a self test to check if FP/VEC/VSX registers are sane (restored
correctly) after a FP/VEC/VSX unavailable exception is caught during a
transaction.
This test checks all possibilities in a thread regarding the combination
of MSR.[FP|VEC] states in a thread and for each scenario raises a
FP/VEC/VSX unavailable exception in transactional state, verifying if
vs0 and vs32 registers, which are representatives of FP/VEC/VSX reg
sets, are not corrupted.

Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which
makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license.
By default all files without license information are under the default
license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2.
Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0'
SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding
shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text.
This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and
Philippe Ombredanne.
How this work was done:
Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of
the use cases:
- file had no licensing information it it.
- file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it,
- file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information,
Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases
where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license
had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords.
The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to
a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the
output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX
tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the
base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files.
The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files
assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner
results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s)
to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not
immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was:
- Files considered eligible had to be source code files.
- Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5
lines of source
- File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5
lines).
All documentation files were explicitly excluded.
The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license
identifiers to apply.
- when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was
considered to have no license information in it, and the top level
COPYING file license applied.
For non */uapi/* files that summary was:

- when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became
the concluded license(s).
- when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a
license but the other didn't, or they both detected different
licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred.
- In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file
resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and
which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics).
- When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was
confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
- If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier,
the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later
in time.
In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the
spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the
source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation
by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from
FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners
disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The
Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so
they are related.
Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets
for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the
files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks
in about 15000 files.
In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have
copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the
correct identifier.
Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual
inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch
version early this week with:
- a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected
license ids and scores
- reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+
files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct
- reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license
was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied
SPDX license was correct
This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This
worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the
different types of files to be modified.
These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to
parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the
format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg
based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to
distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different
comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to
generate the patches.

For several reasons, it is desirable to use {READ,WRITE}_ONCE() in
preference to ACCESS_ONCE(), and new code is expected to use one of the
former. So far, there's been no reason to change most existing uses of
ACCESS_ONCE(), as these aren't currently harmful.
However, for some features it is necessary to instrument reads and
writes separately, which is not possible with ACCESS_ONCE(). This
distinction is critical to correct operation.
The bulk of the kernel code can be transformed via Coccinelle to use
{READ,WRITE}_ONCE(), though this only modifies users of ACCESS_ONCE(),
and not the implementation itself. As such, it has the potential to
break homebrew ACCESS_ONCE() macros seen in some user code in the kernel
tree (e.g. the virtio code, as fixed in commit ea9156fb3b).
To avoid fragility if/when that transformation occurs, and to align with
the preferred usage of {READ,WRITE}_ONCE(), this patch updates the DSCR
selftest code to use READ_ONCE() rather than ACCESS_ONCE(). There should
be no functional change as a result of this patch.

Currently sprintf is used, and while paths should never exceed
the size of the buffer it is theoretically possible since
dirent.d_name is 256 bytes. As a result this trips
-Wformat-overflow, and since the test is built with -Wall -Werror
the causes the build to fail. Switch to using snprintf and skip
any paths which are too long for the filename buffer.

Currently these tests won't build with a `--enable-default-pie`
compiler as they require r30 to be clobbered. This gives
an error:
ptrace-tm-spd-gpr.c:41:2: error: PIC register clobbered by 'r30' in 'asm'
This forces these tests to be built no-pie.

.llong is an undocumented PPC specific directive. The generic
equivalent is .quad, but even better (because it's self describing) is
.8byte.

The tm-resched-dscr self test can, in some situations, run for
several minutes before being successfully interrupted by the context
switch it needs in order to perform the test. This often seems to
occur when the test is being run in a virtual machine.
Improve the test by running it under eat_cpu() to guarantee
contention for the CPU and increase the chance of a context switch.
In practice this seems to reduce the test time, in some cases, from
more than two minutes to under a second.
Also remove the "progress dots" so that if the test does run for a
long time, it doesn't produce large amounts of unnecessary output.

The tm-resched-dscr test has started failing sometimes, depending on
what compiler it's built with, eg:

When it fails we see that the compiler doesn't initialise rv to 1 before
entering the inline asm block. Although that's counter intuitive, it
is allowed because we tell the compiler that the inline asm will write
to rv (using "=r"), meaning the original value is irrelevant.
Marking it as a read/write parameter would presumably work, but it seems
simpler to fix it by setting the initial value of rv in the inline asm.

The changes to enable building with a separate output directory, in
commit a8ba798bc8 ("selftests: enable O and KBUILD_OUTPUT") broke
building the powerpc selftests on their own, eg:
$ cd tools/testing/selftests/powerpc; make
It was partially fixed in commit e53aff45c4 ("selftests: lib.mk Fix
individual test builds"), which defined OUTPUT for standalone tests. But
that only defines OUTPUT within the Makefile, the value is not exported
so sub-shells can't see it. We could export OUTPUT, but it's actually
cleaner to just expand the value of OUTPUT before we invoke the shell.

This is a very basic test of the new cache shape AUXV entries. All it
does at the moment is look for the entries and error out if we don't
find all the ones we expect. Primarily intended for folks bringing up a
new chip to check that the cache info is making it all the way to
userspace correctly.

Refactor the AUXV routines so they are more composable. In a future test
we want to look for many AUXV entries and we don't want to have to read
/proc/self/auxv each time.

On POWER8 (ISA 2.07) lxvx and stxvx are defined to be extended mnemonics
of lxvd2x and stxvd2x. For POWER9 (ISA 3.0) the HW architects in their
infinite wisdom made lxvx and stxvx instructions in their own right.
POWER9 aware GCC will use the POWER9 instruction for lxvx and stxvx
causing these selftests to fail on POWER8. Further compounding the
issue, because of the way -mvsx works it will cause the power9
instructions to be used regardless of -mcpu=power8 to GCC or -mpower8 to
AS.
The safest way to address the problem for now is to not use the extended
mnemonic. We don't care how the CPU loads the values from memory since
the tests only performs register comparisons, so using stdvd2x/lxvd2x
does not impact the test.

In benchmarks we need to use $(TEST_GEN_PROGS) after we include lib.mk,
because lib.mk does the substitution to add $(OUTPUT).
In math the vmx and fpu names were typoed so they no longer matched
correctly, put back the 'v' and 'f'.
In tm we need to substitute $(OUTPUT) into SIGNAL_CONTEXT_CHK_TESTS so
that the rule matches.
In pmu there is an extraneous ':' on the end of $$BUILD_TARGET for the
clean and install rules, which breaks the logic in the child Makefiles.

Some testcases need the clean extra data after running. This patch
introduce the "EXTRA_CLEAN" variable to address this requirement.
After KBUILD_OUTPUT is enabled in later patch, it will be easy to
decide to if we need do the cleanup in the KBUILD_OUTPUT path(if the
testcase ran immediately after compiled).

Currently, kselftest use TEST_PROGS, TEST_PROGS_EXTENDED, TEST_FILES to
indicate the test program, extended test program and test files. It is
easy to understand the purpose of these files. But mix of compiled and
uncompiled files lead to duplicated "all" and "clean" targets.
In order to remove the duplicated targets, introduce TEST_GEN_PROGS,
TEST_GEN_PROGS_EXTENDED, TEST_GEN_FILES to indicate the compiled
objects.
Also, the later patch will make use of TEST_GEN_XXX to redirect these
files to output directory indicated by KBUILD_OUTPUT or O.
And add this changes to "Contributing new tests(details)" of
Documentation/kselftest.txt.

This patch adds ptrace interface test for TM SPR registers. This
also adds ptrace interface based helper functions related to TM
SPR registers access.
