'struct thread' values hold onto references to mmaps, DSOs, etc. When a
thread exits it is necessary to clean all of this memory up by removing
the thread from the machine's threads. Some tools require this doesn't
happen, such as auxtrace events, 'perf report' if offcpu events exist or
if a task list is being generated, so add a 'struct symbol_conf' member
to make the behavior optional. When an exited thread is left in the
machine's threads, mark it as exited.
This change relates to commit 40826c45eb ("perf thread: Remove
notion of dead threads") . Dead threads were removed as they had a
reference count of 0 and were difficult to reason about with the
reference count checker. Here a thread is removed from threads when it
exits, unless via symbol_conf the exited thread isn't remove and is
marked as exited. Reference counting behaves as it normally does.

The hierarchy mode needs to setup output formats for each evsel.
Normally setup_sorting() handles this at the beginning, but it cannot
do that if data comes from a pipe since there's no evsel info before
reading the data. And then perf report cannot process the samples
in hierarchy mode and think as if there's no sample.
Let's check the condition and setup the output formats after reading
data so that it can find evsels.
Before:
$ ./perf record -o- true | ./perf report -i- --hierarchy -q

[ perf record: Captured and wrote 0.000 MB - ]
Error:

struct addr_location holds references to multiple reference counted
objects. Add init/exit functions to make maintenance of those more
consistent with the rest of the code and to try to avoid
leaks. Modification of thread reference counts isn't included in this
change.
Committer notes:
I needed to initialize result to sample->ip to make sure is set to
something, fixing a compile time error, mostly keeping the previous
logic as build_alloc_func_list() already does debugging/error prints
about what went wrong if it takes the 'goto out'.

Using accessors will make it easier to add reference count checking in
later patches.
Committer notes:
thread->nsinfo wasn't wrapped as it is used together with
nsinfo__zput(), where does a trick to set the field with a refcount
being dropped to NULL, and that doesn't work well with using
thread__nsinfo(thread), that loses the &thread->nsinfo pointer.
When refcount checking is added to 'struct thread', later in this
series, nsinfo__zput(RC_CHK_ACCESS(thread)->nsinfo) will be used to
check the thread pointer.

struct map is reference counted, having it also be a node in an
red-black tree complicates the reference counting. Switch to having a
map_rb_node which is a red-block tree node but points at the reference
counted struct map. This reference is responsible for a single reference
count.

Allow addr2line to be set either on the command line or via the
perfconfig file. This doesn't currently work with llvm-addr2line as
the addr2line code emits two things:
1) the address to decode,
2) a bogus ',' value.
The expectation is the bogus value will generate:
??
??:0
that terminates the addr2line reading. However, the output from
llvm-addr2line is a single line with just the input ',' locking up the
addr2line reading that is expecting a second line.

The annotation__default_options global variable was used to initialize
annotation_options. Switch to the init/exit pattern as later changes
will give ownership over strings and this will be necessary to avoid

Maintaining the number of groups during event parsing is problematic
and since changing to sort/regroup events can only be computed by a
linear pass over the evlist. As the value is generally only used in
tests, rather than hold it in a variable compute it by passing over
the evlist when necessary.
This change highlights that libpfm's counting of groups with a single
entry disagreed with regular event parsing. The libpfm tests are
updated accordingly.

Remove the LIBTRACEEVENT_DYNAMIC and LIBTRACEFS_DYNAMIC make command
line variables.
If libtraceevent isn't installed or NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1 is passed to the
build, don't compile in libtraceevent and libtracefs support.
This also disables CONFIG_TRACE that controls "perf trace".
CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT is used to control enablement in Build/Makefiles,
HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT is used in C code.
Without HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT tracepoints are disabled and as such the
commands kmem, kwork, lock, sched and timechart are removed. The
majority of commands continue to work including "perf test".
Committer notes:
Fixed up a tools/perf/util/Build reject and added:
#include <traceevent/event-parse.h>
to tools/perf/util/scripting-engines/trace-event-perl.c.

Had to tweak tools/perf/util/setup.py to make sure the python binding
shared object links with libtraceevent if -DHAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT is
present in CFLAGS.
Building with NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1 uncovered some more build failures:
- Make building of data-convert-bt.c to CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT=y
- perf-$(CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT) += scripts/
- bpf_kwork.o needs also to be dependent on CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT=y
- The python binding needed some fixups and util/trace-event.c can't be
built and linked with the python binding shared object, so remove it
in tools/perf/util/setup.py and exclude it from the list of
dependencies in the python/perf.so Makefile.perf target.
Building without libtraceevent-devel installed uncovered more build
failures:
- The python binding tools/perf/util/python.c was assuming that
traceevent/parse-events.h was always available, which was the case
when we defaulted to using the in-kernel tools/lib/traceevent/ files,
now we need to enclose it under ifdef HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT, just like
the other parts of it that deal with tracepoints.
- We have to ifdef the rules in the Build files with
CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT=y to build builtin-trace.c and
tools/perf/trace/beauty/ as we only ifdef setting CONFIG_TRACE=y when
setting NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1 in the make command line, not when we don't
detect libtraceevent-devel installed in the system. Simplification here
to avoid these two ways of disabling builtin-trace.c and not having
CONFIG_TRACE=y when libtraceevent-devel isn't installed is the clean
way.
From Athira:
<quote>
tools/perf/arch/powerpc/util/Build
-perf-y += kvm-stat.o
+perf-$(CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT) += kvm-stat.o
</quote>
Then, ditto for arm64 and s390, detected by container cross build tests.
- s/390 uses test__checkevent_tracepoint() that is now only available if
HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT is defined, enclose the callsite with ifder HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT.
Also from Athira:
<quote>
With this change, I could successfully compile in these environment:
- Without libtraceevent-devel installed
- With libtraceevent-devel installed
- With “make NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1”
</quote>
Then, finally rename CONFIG_TRACEEVENT to CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT for
consistency with other libraries detected in tools/perf/.

Since commit bb30acae4c ("perf report: Bail out --mem-mode if mem
info is not available") "perf mem report" and "perf report --mem-mode"
don't report result if the PERF_SAMPLE_DATA_SRC bit is missed in sample
type.
The commit ffab487052 ("perf: arm-spe: Fix perf report
--mem-mode") partially fixes the issue. It adds PERF_SAMPLE_DATA_SRC
bit for Arm SPE event, this allows the perf data file generated by
kernel v5.18-rc1 or later version can be reported properly.
On the other hand, perf tool still fails to be backward compatibility
for a data file recorded by an older version's perf which contains Arm
SPE trace data. This patch is a workaround in reporting phase, when
detects ARM SPE PMU event and without PERF_SAMPLE_DATA_SRC bit, it will
force to set the bit in the sample type and give a warning info.

Current 'perf report' fails to process a pipe input when --task or
--stat options are used. This is because they reset all the tool
callbacks and fails to find a matching event for a sample.
When pipe input is used, the event info is passed via ATTR records so it

For some platforms, such as Alderlake, the 'mem-loads' event is required
to use together with 'mem-loads-aux' within a group and 'mem-loads-aux'
must be the group leader. Now we disable this group before reporting
because 'mem-loads-aux' is just an auxiliary event. It doesn't carry
any valid memory load result. If we show the 'mem-loads-aux' +
'mem-loads' as a group in report, it needs many of changes but they
are totally unnecessary.

To make the output more readable, I think it's better to remove 0's in
the output. Also the dummy event has no event stats so it just wasts
the space. Let's use the --skip-empty option to suppress it.

Each struct hists have events_stats but most of the fields were not
used. It's to count number of samples and periods whether filtered or
not. And other fields are used only by evlist.
So it'd be better to split hists_stats and events_stats to reduce
wasted memory in the struct hists. This makes the output of event
statistics in the perf report compact by skipping 0 events in each
evsel/hists.

Warning "dso not found" is reported when using "perf report -D".

The PERF_RECORD_SAMPLE event (timestamp: 66702781413407) should be after the
PERF_RECORD_COMM event (timestamp: 66702727832429), but it's early processed.
So for most of cases, it makes sense to keep the event ordered even for dump
mode. But it would be also useful to disable ordered_events for reporting raw
dump to see events as they are stored in the perf.data file.
So now, set ordered_events by default to true and add a new option
'disable-order' to disable it. For example,
perf report -D --disable-order

The --header-only checks file header and prints the feature data. But
as pipe mode doesn't have it in the header it prints almost nothing.
Change it to process first few records until it founds HEADER_FEATURE.
