Patch series "kasan: switch tag-based modes to stack ring from per-object
metadata", v3.
This series makes the tag-based KASAN modes use a ring buffer for storing
stack depot handles for alloc/free stack traces for slab objects instead
of per-object metadata. This ring buffer is referred to as the stack
ring.
On each alloc/free of a slab object, the tagged address of the object and
the current stack trace are recorded in the stack ring.
On each bug report, if the accessed address belongs to a slab object, the
stack ring is scanned for matching entries. The newest entries are used
to print the alloc/free stack traces in the report: one entry for alloc
and one for free.
The advantages of this approach over storing stack trace handles in
per-object metadata with the tag-based KASAN modes:
- Allows to find relevant stack traces for use-after-free bugs without
using quarantine for freed memory. (Currently, if the object was
reallocated multiple times, the report contains the latest alloc/free
stack traces, not necessarily the ones relevant to the buggy allocation.)
- Allows to better identify and mark use-after-free bugs, effectively
making the CONFIG_KASAN_TAGS_IDENTIFY functionality always-on.
- Has fixed memory overhead.
The disadvantage:
- If the affected object was allocated/freed long before the bug happened
and the stack trace events were purged from the stack ring, the report
will have no stack traces.
Discussion
==========
The proposed implementation of the stack ring uses a single ring buffer
for the whole kernel. This might lead to contention due to atomic
accesses to the ring buffer index on multicore systems.
At this point, it is unknown whether the performance impact from this
contention would be significant compared to the slowdown introduced by
collecting stack traces due to the planned changes to the latter part, see
the section below.
For now, the proposed implementation is deemed to be good enough, but this
might need to be revisited once the stack collection becomes faster.
A considered alternative is to keep a separate ring buffer for each CPU
and then iterate over all of them when printing a bug report. This
approach requires somehow figuring out which of the stack rings has the
freshest stack traces for an object if multiple stack rings have them.
Further plans
=============
This series is a part of an effort to make KASAN stack trace collection
suitable for production. This requires stack trace collection to be fast
and memory-bounded.
The planned steps are:
1. Speed up stack trace collection (potentially, by using SCS;
patches on-hold until steps #2 and #3 are completed).
2. Keep stack trace handles in the stack ring (this series).
3. Add a memory-bounded mode to stack depot or provide an alternative
memory-bounded stack storage.
4. Potentially, implement stack trace collection sampling to minimize
the performance impact.
This patch (of 34):
__kasan_metadata_size() calculates the size of the redzone for objects in
a slab cache.
When accounting for presence of kasan_free_meta in the redzone, this
function only compares free_meta_offset with 0. But free_meta_offset
could also be equal to KASAN_NO_FREE_META, which indicates that
kasan_free_meta is not present at all.
Add a comparison with KASAN_NO_FREE_META into __kasan_metadata_size().

Currently, KASAN describes all invalid-free/double-free bugs as
"double-free or invalid-free". This is ambiguous.
KASAN should report "double-free" when a double-free is a more likely
cause (the address points to the start of an object) and report
"invalid-free" otherwise [1].

Make KASAN run on User Mode Linux on x86_64.
The UML-specific KASAN initializer uses mmap to map the ~16TB of shadow
memory to the location defined by KASAN_SHADOW_OFFSET. kasan_init()
utilizes constructors to initialize KASAN before main().
The location of the KASAN shadow memory, starting at
KASAN_SHADOW_OFFSET, can be configured using the KASAN_SHADOW_OFFSET
option. The default location of this offset is 0x100000000000, which
keeps it out-of-the-way even on UML setups with more "physical" memory.
For low-memory setups, 0x7fff8000 can be used instead, which fits in an
immediate and is therefore faster, as suggested by Dmitry Vyukov. There
is usually enough free space at this location; however, it is a config
option so that it can be easily changed if needed.
Note that, unlike KASAN on other architectures, vmalloc allocations
still use the shadow memory allocated upfront, rather than allocating
and free-ing it per-vmalloc allocation.
If another architecture chooses to go down the same path, we should
replace the checks for CONFIG_UML with something more generic, such
as:
- A CONFIG_KASAN_NO_SHADOW_ALLOC option, which architectures could set
- or, a way of having architecture-specific versions of these vmalloc
and module shadow memory allocation options.
Also note that, while UML supports both KASAN in inline mode
(CONFIG_KASAN_INLINE) and static linking (CONFIG_STATIC_LINK), it does
not support both at the same time.

__kasan_unpoison_pages() colours the memory with a random tag and stores
it in page->flags in order to re-create the tagged pointer via
page_to_virt() later. When the tag from the page->flags is read, ensure
that the in-memory tags are already visible by re-ordering the
page_kasan_tag_set() after kasan_unpoison(). The former already has
barriers in place through try_cmpxchg(). On the reader side, the order
is ensured by the address dependency between page->flags and the memory
access.

HW_TAGS KASAN skips zeroing page_alloc allocations backing vmalloc
mappings via __GFP_SKIP_ZERO. Instead, these pages are zeroed via
kasan_unpoison_vmalloc() by passing the KASAN_VMALLOC_INIT flag.
The problem is that __kasan_unpoison_vmalloc() does not zero pages when
either kasan_vmalloc_enabled() or is_vmalloc_or_module_addr() fail.
Thus:
1. Change __vmalloc_node_range() to only set KASAN_VMALLOC_INIT when
__GFP_SKIP_ZERO is set.
2. Change __kasan_unpoison_vmalloc() to always zero pages when the
KASAN_VMALLOC_INIT flag is set.
3. Add WARN_ON() asserts to check that KASAN_VMALLOC_INIT cannot be set
in other early return paths of __kasan_unpoison_vmalloc().
Also clean up the comment in __kasan_unpoison_vmalloc.

kasan_quarantine_remove_cache() is called in kmem_cache_shrink()/
destroy(). The kasan_quarantine_remove_cache() call is protected by
cpuslock in kmem_cache_destroy() to ensure serialization with
kasan_cpu_offline().
However the kasan_quarantine_remove_cache() call is not protected by
cpuslock in kmem_cache_shrink(). When a CPU is going offline and cache
shrink occurs at same time, the cpu_quarantine may be corrupted by
interrupt (per_cpu_remove_cache operation).
So add a cpu_quarantine offline flags check in per_cpu_remove_cache().

Kasan enables hw tags via kasan_enable_tagging() which based on the mode
passed via kernel command line selects the correct hw backend.
kasan_enable_tagging() is meant to be invoked indirectly via the cpu
features framework of the architectures that support these backends.
Currently the invocation of this function is guarded by
CONFIG_KASAN_KUNIT_TEST which allows the enablement of the correct backend
only when KUNIT tests are enabled in the kernel.
This inconsistency was introduced in commit:
ed6d74446c ("kasan: test: support async (again) and asymm modes for HW_TAGS")
... and prevents to enable MTE on arm64 when KUNIT tests for kasan hw_tags are
disabled.
Fix the issue making sure that the CONFIG_KASAN_KUNIT_TEST guard does not
prevent the correct invocation of kasan_enable_tagging().

Call print_report() in kasan_report_invalid_free() instead of calling
printing functions directly. Compared to the existing implementation of
kasan_report_invalid_free(), print_report() makes sure that the buggy
address has metadata before printing it.
The change requires adding a report type field into kasan_access_info and
using it accordingly.
kasan_report_async() is left as is, as using print_report() will only
complicate the code.

Async mode support has already been implemented in commit e80a76aa1a
("kasan, arm64: tests supports for HW_TAGS async mode") but then got
accidentally broken in commit 99734b535d ("kasan: detect false-positives
in tests").
Restore the changes removed by the latter patch and adapt them for asymm
mode: add a sync_fault flag to kunit_kasan_expectation that only get set
if the MTE fault was synchronous, and reenable MTE on such faults in
tests.
Also rename kunit_kasan_expectation to kunit_kasan_status and move its
definition to mm/kasan/kasan.h from include/linux/kasan.h, as this
structure is only internally used by KASAN. Also put the structure
definition under IS_ENABLED(CONFIG_KUNIT).

Allow disabling vmalloc() tagging for HW_TAGS KASAN via a kasan.vmalloc
command line switch.
This is a fail-safe switch intended for production systems that enable
HW_TAGS KASAN. In case vmalloc() tagging ends up having an issue not
detected during testing but that manifests in production, kasan.vmalloc
allows to turn vmalloc() tagging off while leaving page_alloc/slab
tagging on.

As kasan_arg_stacktrace is only used in __init functions, mark it as
__initdata instead of __ro_after_init to allow it be freed after boot.
The other enums for KASAN args are used in kasan_init_hw_tags_cpu(), which
is not marked as __init as a CPU can be hot-plugged after boot. Clarify
this in a comment.

The kernel can use to allocate executable memory. The only supported
way to do that is via __vmalloc_node_range() with the executable bit set
in the prot argument. (vmap() resets the bit via pgprot_nx()).
Once tag-based KASAN modes start tagging vmalloc allocations, executing
code from such allocations will lead to the PC register getting a tag,
which is not tolerated by the kernel.
Only tag the allocations for normal kernel pages.

Add vmalloc tagging support to HW_TAGS KASAN.
The key difference between HW_TAGS and the other two KASAN modes when it
comes to vmalloc: HW_TAGS KASAN can only assign tags to physical memory.
The other two modes have shadow memory covering every mapped virtual
memory region.
Make __kasan_unpoison_vmalloc() for HW_TAGS KASAN:
- Skip non-VM_ALLOC mappings as HW_TAGS KASAN can only tag a single
mapping of normal physical memory; see the comment in the function.
- Generate a random tag, tag the returned pointer and the allocation,
and initialize the allocation at the same time.
- Propagate the tag into the page stucts to allow accesses through
page_address(vmalloc_to_page()).
The rest of vmalloc-related KASAN hooks are not needed:
- The shadow-related ones are fully skipped.
- __kasan_poison_vmalloc() is kept as a no-op with a comment.
Poisoning and zeroing of physical pages that are backing vmalloc()
allocations are skipped via __GFP_SKIP_KASAN_UNPOISON and
__GFP_SKIP_ZERO: __kasan_unpoison_vmalloc() does that instead.
Enabling CONFIG_KASAN_VMALLOC with HW_TAGS is not yet allowed.

Add vmalloc tagging support to SW_TAGS KASAN.
- __kasan_unpoison_vmalloc() now assigns a random pointer tag, poisons
the virtual mapping accordingly, and embeds the tag into the returned
pointer.
- __get_vm_area_node() (used by vmalloc() and vmap()) and
pcpu_get_vm_areas() save the tagged pointer into vm_struct->addr
(note: not into vmap_area->addr).
This requires putting kasan_unpoison_vmalloc() after
setup_vmalloc_vm[_locked](); otherwise the latter will overwrite the
tagged pointer. The tagged pointer then is naturally propagateed to
vmalloc() and vmap().
- vm_map_ram() returns the tagged pointer directly.
As a result of this change, vm_struct->addr is now tagged.
Enabling KASAN_VMALLOC with SW_TAGS is not yet allowed.

Currently, the code responsible for initializing and poisoning memory in
post_alloc_hook() is scattered across two locations: kasan_alloc_pages()
hook for HW_TAGS KASAN and post_alloc_hook() itself. This is confusing.
This and a few following patches combine the code from these two

many performed checks to make them easier to follow.
Replace the only caller of kasan_alloc_pages() with its implementation.
As kasan_has_integrated_init() is only true when CONFIG_KASAN_HW_TAGS is

Also move init and init_tags variables definitions out of
kasan_has_integrated_init() clause in post_alloc_hook(), as they have the
same values regardless of what the if condition evaluates to.
This patch is not useful by itself but makes the simplifications in the
following patches easier to follow.

The non-interrupt portion of interrupt stack traces before interrupt
entry is usually arbitrary. Therefore, saving stack traces of
interrupts (that include entries before interrupt entry) to stack depot
leads to unbounded stackdepot growth.
As such, use of filter_irq_stacks() is a requirement to ensure
stackdepot can efficiently deduplicate interrupt stacks.
Looking through all current users of stack_depot_save(), none (except
KASAN) pass the stack trace through filter_irq_stacks() before passing
it on to stack_depot_save().
Rather than adding filter_irq_stacks() to all current users of
stack_depot_save(), it became clear that stack_depot_save() should
simply do filter_irq_stacks().

KASAN's quarantine might save its metadata inside freed objects. As
this happens after the memory is zeroed by the slab allocator when
init_on_free is enabled, the memory coming out of quarantine is not
properly zeroed.
This causes lib/test_meminit.c tests to fail with Generic KASAN.
Zero the metadata when the object is removed from quarantine.

Yongqiang reports a kmemleak panic when module insmod/rmmod with KASAN
enabled(without KASAN_VMALLOC) on x86[1].
When the module area allocates memory, it's kmemleak_object is created
successfully, but the KASAN shadow memory of module allocation is not
ready, so when kmemleak scan the module's pointer, it will panic due to
no shadow memory with KASAN check.
module_alloc
__vmalloc_node_range
kmemleak_vmalloc
kmemleak_scan
update_checksum
kasan_module_alloc
kmemleak_ignore
Note, there is no problem if KASAN_VMALLOC enabled, the modules area
entire shadow memory is preallocated. Thus, the bug only exits on ARCH
which supports dynamic allocation of module area per module load, for
now, only x86/arm64/s390 are involved.
Add a VM_DEFER_KMEMLEAK flags, defer vmalloc'ed object register of
kmemleak in module_alloc() to fix this issue.

KASAN accesses some slab related struct page fields so we need to
convert it to struct slab. Some places are a bit simplified thanks to
kasan_addr_to_slab() encapsulating the PageSlab flag check through
virt_to_slab(). When resolving object address to either a real slab or
a large kmalloc, use struct folio as the intermediate type for testing
the slab flag to avoid unnecessary implicit compound_head().

Architectures supported by KASAN_HW_TAGS can provide an asymmetric mode
of execution. On an MTE enabled arm64 hw for example this can be
identified with the asymmetric tagging mode of execution. In particular,
when such a mode is present, the CPU triggers a fault on a tag mismatch
during a load operation and asynchronously updates a register when a tag
mismatch is detected during a store operation.
Extend the KASAN HW execution mode kernel command line parameter to
support asymmetric mode.

We have special logic to suppress MTE tag check fault reporting, based
on a global `mte_report_once` and `reported` variables. These can be
used to suppress calling kasan_report() when taking a tag check fault,
but do not prevent taking the fault in the first place, nor does they
affect the way we disable tag checks upon taking a fault.
The core KASAN code already defaults to reporting a single fault, and
has a `multi_shot` control to permit reporting multiple faults. The only
place we transiently alter `mte_report_once` is in lib/test_kasan.c,
where we also the `multi_shot` state as the same time. Thus
`mte_report_once` and `reported` are redundant, and can be removed.
When a tag check fault is taken, tag checking will be disabled by
`do_tag_recovery` and must be explicitly re-enabled if desired. The test
code does this by calling kasan_enable_tagging_sync().
This patch removes the redundant mte_report_once() logic and associated
variables.

When KASAN_HW_TAGS is selected, KASAN is enabled at boot time, and the
hardware supports MTE, we'll initialize `kernel_gcr_excl` with a value
dependent on KASAN_TAG_MAX. While the resulting value is a constant
which depends on KASAN_TAG_MAX, we have to perform some runtime work to
generate the value, and have to read the value from memory during the
exception entry path. It would be better if we could generate this as a
constant at compile-time, and use it as such directly.
Early in boot within __cpu_setup(), we initialize GCR_EL1 to a safe
value, and later override this with the value required by KASAN. If
CONFIG_KASAN_HW_TAGS is not selected, or if KASAN is disabeld at boot
time, the kernel will not use IRG instructions, and so the initial value
of GCR_EL1 is does not matter to the kernel. Thus, we can instead have
__cpu_setup() initialize GCR_EL1 to a value consistent with
KASAN_TAG_MAX, and avoid the need to re-initialize it during hotplug and
resume form suspend.
This patch makes arem64 use a compile-time constant KERNEL_GCR_EL1
value, which is compatible with KASAN_HW_TAGS when this is selected.
This removes the need to re-initialize GCR_EL1 dynamically, and acts as
an optimization to the entry assembly, which no longer needs to load
this value from memory. The redundant initialization hooks are removed.
In order to do this, KASAN_TAG_MAX needs to be visible outside of the
core KASAN code. To do this, I've moved the KASAN_TAG_* values into
<linux/kasan-tags.h>.
There should be no functional change as a result of this patch.

An additional memzero_explicit() path is added to replacing init by hwtag

powerpc has a variable number of PTRS_PER_*, set at runtime based on the
MMU that the kernel is booted under.
This means the PTRS_PER_* are no longer constants, and therefore breaks
the build. Switch to using MAX_PTRS_PER_*, which are constant.

Allow architectures to define a kasan_arch_is_ready() hook that bails out
of any function that's about to touch the shadow unless the arch says that
it is ready for the memory to be accessed. This is fairly uninvasive and
should have a negligible performance penalty.
This will only work in outline mode, so an arch must specify
ARCH_DISABLE_KASAN_INLINE if it requires this.

Most of the contents of KASAN reports are printed with pr_err(), so use a

SLUB has resiliency_test() function which is hidden behind #ifdef
SLUB_RESILIENCY_TEST that is not part of Kconfig, so nobody runs it.
KUnit should be a proper replacement for it.
Try changing byte in redzone after allocation and changing pointer to next
free node, first byte, 50th byte and redzone byte. Check if validation
finds errors.
There are several differences from the original resiliency test: Tests
create own caches with known state instead of corrupting shared kmalloc
caches.
The corruption of freepointer uses correct offset, the original resiliency
test got broken with freepointer changes.
Scratch changing random byte test, because it does not have meaning in
this form where we need deterministic results.
Add new option CONFIG_SLUB_KUNIT_TEST in Kconfig. Tests next_pointer,
first_word and clobber_50th_byte do not run with KASAN option on. Because
the test deliberately modifies non-allocated objects.
Use kunit_resource to count errors in cache and silence bug reports.
Count error whenever slab_bug() or slab_fix() is called or when the count
of pages is wrong.

"There's a reasonable amount here and the juicy details are all below.
It's worth noting that the MTE/KASAN changes strayed outside of our
usual directories due to core mm changes and some associated changes
to some other architectures; Andrew asked for us to carry these [1]
rather that take them via the -mm tree.
