The tool uses topo.max_cpu_num to determine number of entries needed for
fd_percpu[] and irqs_per_cpu[]. For example on a system with 4 CPUs
topo.max_cpu_num is 3 so we get too small array for holding per-CPU items.
Fix this to use right number of entries, which is topo.max_cpu_num + 1.

turbostat gives valid results across suspend to idle, aka freeze,
whether invoked in interval mode, or in command mode.
Indeed, this can be used to measure suspend to idle:
turbostat echo freeze > /sys/power/state
But this does not work across suspend to ACPI S3, because the
processor counters, including the TSC, are reset on resume.
Further, when turbostat detects a problem, it does't forgive
the hardware, and interval mode will print *'s from there on out.
Instead, upon detecting counters going backwards, simply
reset and start over.

The RAPL Joules counter is limited in capacity.
Turbostat estimates how soon it can roll-over
based on the max TDP of the processor --
which tells us the maximum increment rate.
eg.
RAPL: 2759 sec. Joule Counter Range, at 95 Watts
So if a sample duration is longer than 2759 seconds on this system,
'**' replace the decimal place in the display to indicate
that the results may be suspect.
But the display had an extra ' ' in this case, throwing off the columns.
Also, the -J "Joules" option appended an extra "time" column
to the display. While this may be useful, it printed the interval time,
which may not be the accurate time per processor. Remove this column,
which appeared only when using '-J',
as we plan to add accurate per-cpu interval times in a future commit.

compiler specific implementation of vargs when -nostdinc is specified.
-fno-builtin is required for GCC to avoid optimization performed printf().
This optimization cannot be automatically disabled by specifying -nostdlib.

ACPICA commit 9bb265c2afb9910e46f820d6759648580edabd09
When /Za is specified, headers of some Windows SDKs contain bugs breaking
VC builds, and MSVC9's default SDK is one of such header-buggy library.
In order to solve this issue, many VC developers stop using /Za. However
we've been asked to have this fixed without removing /Za.
In MSVC9 default SDK, this issue can be fixed by restricting <sys/stat.h>
to be the last standard file included by every source file in the projects.
This patch thus moves <sys/stat.h> inclusion to "acapps.h", so that this
issue can be fixed by ensuring that "acapps.h" is always the last standard
file included by all of the ACPICA source files. This is in fact also a
useful cleanup because applications can only include one header (e.x.,
acpidump.h) instead of including acapps.h separately. Lv Zheng.
Except some harmless header inclusion re-ordering, Linux kernel is not
affected by this change.

ACPICA commit 7f9b359b7c78c69b07f62eb2d58f710c351fd75d
EFI header should use standard C library stuffs (integer types and IO
handles) rather than implementing such standard stuffs.
This patch fixes this issue by:
1. Implementing standard integer types for ACPI_USE_STANDARD_HADERS=n;
2. Defining EFI types using standard integer types and standard IO handles;
3. Tuning header inclusion order and environment definition order;
4. Removing wrong standard header inclusion from ACPICA core files;
5. Moving several application headers from acpidump.h to acenv.h.
This patch corrects some of them. Lv Zheng.

Pull ACPI updates from Rafael Wysocki:
"The new features here are ACPI 6.1 support (and some previously
missing bits of ACPI 6.0 support) in ACPICA and two new drivers, a
driver for the ACPI Generic Event Device (GED) feature introduced by
ACPI 6.1 and the INT3406 thermal driver for display thermal
management. Also the value returned by the _HRV (hardware revision)
ACPI object will be exported to user space via sysfs now.
In addition to that, ACPI on ARM64 will not depend on EXPERT any more.
The rest is mostly fixes and cleanups and some code reorganization.
Specifics:
- In-kernel ACPICA code update to the upstream release 20160422
adding support for ACPI 6.1 along with some previously missing bits
of ACPI 6.0 support, making a fair amount of fixes and cleanups and
reducing divergences between the upstream ACPICA and the in-kernel
code (Bob Moore, Lv Zheng, Al Stone, Aleksey Makarov, Will Miles)
- ACPI Generic Event Device (GED) support and a fix for it (Sinan
Kaya, Paul Gortmaker)
- INT3406 thermal driver for display thermal management and ACPI
backlight support code reorganization related to it (Aaron Lu, Arnd
Bergmann)
- Support for exporting the value returned by the _HRV (hardware
revision) ACPI object via sysfs (Betty Dall)
- Removal of the EXPERT dependency for ACPI on ARM64 (Mark Brown)
- Rework of the handling of ACPI _OSI mechanism allowing the
_OSI("Darwin") support to be overridden from the kernel command
line among other things (Lv Zheng, Chen Yu)
- Rework of the ACPI tables override mechanism to prepare it for the
introduction of overlays support going forward (Lv Zheng, Rafael
Wysocki)
- Fixes related to the ECDT support and module-level execution of AML
(Lv Zheng)
- ACPI PCI interrupts management update to make it work better on
ARM64 mostly (Sinan Kaya)
- ACPI SRAT handling update to make the code process all entires in
the table order regardless of the entry type (Lukasz Anaczkowski)
- EFI power off support for full-hardware ACPI platforms that don't
support ACPI S5 (Chen Yu)
- Fixes and cleanups related to the ACPI core's sysfs interface (Dan
Carpenter, Betty Dall)
- acpi_dev_present() API rework to reduce possible confusion related
to it (Lukas Wunner)
- Removal of CLK_IS_ROOT from two ACPI drivers (Stephen Boyd)"

ACPICA commit b2294cae776f5a66a7697414b21949d307e6856f
This patch removes unwanted spaces for typedef. This solution doesn't cover
function types.
Note that the linuxize result of this commit is very giant and should have
many conflicts against the current Linux upstream. Thus it is required to
modify the linuxize result of this commit and the commits around it
manually in order to have them merged to the Linux upstream. Since this is
very costy, we should do this only once, and if we can't ensure to do this
only once, we need to revert the Linux code to the wrong indentation result
before merging the linuxize result of this commit. Lv Zheng.

This more or less is a renaming and moving of functions and should not
introduce any functional change.
cpupower was built from cpufrequtils (which had a C library providing easy
access to cpu frequency platform info). In the meantime it got enhanced
by quite some neat cpuidle userspace tools.
Now the cpu idle functions have been separated and added to the cpupower.so
library.
So beside an already existing public header file:
cpufreq.h
cpupower now also exports these cpu idle functions in:
cpuidle.h
Here again pasted for better review of the interfaces:

Merge tag 'pm+acpi-4.6-rc1-1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rafael/linux-pm
Pull power management and ACPI updates from Rafael Wysocki:
"This time the majority of changes go into cpufreq and they are
significant.
First off, the way CPU frequency updates are triggered is different
now. Instead of having to set up and manage a deferrable timer for
each CPU in the system to evaluate and possibly change its frequency
periodically, cpufreq governors set up callbacks to be invoked by the
scheduler on a regular basis (basically on utilization updates). The
"old" governors, "ondemand" and "conservative", still do all of their
work in process context (although that is triggered by the scheduler
now), but intel_pstate does it all in the callback invoked by the
scheduler with no need for any additional asynchronous processing.
Of course, this eliminates the overhead related to the management of
all those timers, but also it allows the cpufreq governor code to be
simplified quite a bit. On top of that, the common code and data
structures used by the "ondemand" and "conservative" governors are
cleaned up and made more straightforward and some long-standing and
quite annoying problems are addressed. In particular, the handling of
governor sysfs attributes is modified and the related locking becomes
more fine grained which allows some concurrency problems to be avoided
(particularly deadlocks with the core cpufreq code).
In principle, the new mechanism for triggering frequency updates
allows utilization information to be passed from the scheduler to
cpufreq. Although the current code doesn't make use of it, in the
works is a new cpufreq governor that will make decisions based on the
scheduler's utilization data. That should allow the scheduler and
cpufreq to work more closely together in the long run.
In addition to the core and governor changes, cpufreq drivers are
updated too. Fixes and optimizations go into intel_pstate, the
cpufreq-dt driver is updated on top of some modification in the
Operating Performance Points (OPP) framework and there are fixes and
other updates in the powernv cpufreq driver.
Apart from the cpufreq updates there is some new ACPICA material,
including a fix for a problem introduced by previous ACPICA updates,
and some less significant changes in the ACPI code, like CPPC code
optimizations, ACPI processor driver cleanups and support for loading
ACPI tables from initrd.
Also updated are the generic power domains framework, the Intel RAPL
power capping driver and the turbostat utility and we have a bunch of
traditional assorted fixes and cleanups.

The accuracy of Bzy_Mhz and Busy% depend on reading
the TSC, APERF, and MPERF close together in time.
When there is a very short measurement interval,
or a large system is profoundly idle, the changes
in APERF and MPERF may be very small.
They can be small enough that an expensive interrupt
between reading APERF and MPERF can cause the APERF/MPERF
ratio to become inaccurate, resulting in invalid
calculation and display of Bzy_MHz.
A dummy APERF read of APERF makes this problem
much more rare. Apparently this 1st systemn call
after exiting a long stretch of idle is when we
typically see expensive timer interrupts that cause
large jitter.
For the cases that dummy APERF read fails to prevent,
we compare the latency of the APERF and MPERF reads.
If they differ by more than 2x, we re-issue them.

is in the "render C6" state, rc6. Deep package C-states on several
systems depend on the GPU being in RC6.
This information comes from the counter

The new IRQ column shows how many interrupts have occurred on each CPU
during the measurement inteval. This information comes from
the difference between /proc/interrupts shapshots made before
and after the measurement interval.
The first row, the system summary, shows the sum of the IRQS
for all CPUs during that interval.

- changed MSR_NHM_TURBO_RATIO_LIMIT to MSR_TURBO_RATIO_LIMIT in debug print
for consistency with Developer Manual
- updated definition of bitfields in MSR_TURBO_RATIO_LIMIT and appropriate

- added x200 to list of architectures that do not support Nahlem compatible
definition of MSR_TURBO_RATIO_LIMIT register (x200 has the register but
bits definition is custom)
- fixed typo in code that parses MSR_TURBO_RATIO_LIMIT

At the same time x200 cannot be included in has_snb_msrs since

This patch adds a userspace tool to access Linux kernel AML debugger
interface.
Tow modes are supported by this tool:
1. Interactive: Users are able to launch a debugging shell to talk with
in-kernel AML debugger.
Note that it's user duty to ensure kernel runtime integrity by using
this debugging tool:
A. Some control methods evaluated by the users may result in kernel
panics if those control methods shouldn't be evaluated by the OSPMs
according to the current BIOS/OS configurations.
B. Currently if a single stepping evaluation couldn't run to an end,
then the synchronization primitives acquired by the evaluation may
block normal OSPM control method evaluations.
2. Batch: Users are able to execute debugger commands in a script.
Note that in addition to the above duties, it's user duty to ensure
script runtime integrity by using this debugging tool in this mode:
C. Currently only those commands that are not used for single stepping
are suitable to be used in this mode.
D. If the execution of the command may cause a failure that could result
in an endless kernel execution, the execution of the script may also
get blocked.
To exit the utility, currently "exit/quit" commands are recommended, but
ctrl-C" can also be used.

this patch makes two changes to the way that "cpupower
frequancy-info" operates
1. make it so that querying individual values always returns a
message to the user
currently cpupower frequency info doesn't return anything to the user when
querying an individual value cannot be returned
[root@amd-dinar-09 cpupower]# cpupower -c 4 frequency-info -d
analyzing CPU 4:
[root@amd-dinar-09 cpupower]#
I added messages so that each query prints a message to the terminal
[root@amd-dinar-09 cpupower]# ./cpupower -c 4 frequency-info -d
analyzing CPU 4:
no or unknown cpufreq driver is active on this CPU
[root@amd-dinar-09 cpupower]#
(this is just one example)
2. change debug_output_one() to use the functions already provided
by cpufreq-info.c to query individual values of interest.

cpupower idle-set -D <latency>
currently only disables all C-states that have a higher latency than the
specified <latency>. But if deep sleep states were already disabled and
have a lower latency, they should get enabled again.
For example:
This call:
cpupower idle-set -D 30
disables all C-states with a higher or equal latency than 30.
If one then calls:
cpupower idle-set -D 100
C-states with a latency between 30-99 will get enabled again with this patch
now. It is ensured that only C-states with a latency of 100 and higher are
disabled.

because of this cpupower also holds the incorrect value for the number
of physical packages in the machine
Changed cpupower to initialize the values of an offline cpu's socket and
core to -1, warn the user that one or more cpus is/are
offline and not print statistics for offline cpus.
This fix hides offlined cores where topology cannot be accessed.
With a recent kernel patch suggested from Prarit Bhargava it may be possible
that soft offlined cores' topology can still be parsed.
This patch would then show which cores in which package/socket are offline,

Bzy_MHz = TSC_delta*tsc_tweak/APERF_delta/MPERF_delta/measurement_interval
becomes
Bzy_MHz = base_mhz/APERF_delta/MPERF_delta
on systems which support MSR_NHM_PLATFORM_INFO.
base_mhz is calculated directly from the base_ratio
reported in MSR_NHM_PLATFORM_INFO * bclk,
and bclk is discovered via MSR or cpuid.
This reduces the dependency of Bzy_MHz calculation on the TSC.
Previously, there were 4 TSC readings required in each caculation,
the raw TSC delta combined with the measurement_interval.
This also removes the "tsc_tweak" correction factor used when
TSC runs on a different base clock from the CPU's bclk.
After this change, tsc_tweak is used only for %Busy.
The end-result should be a Bzy_MHz result slightly less prone to jitter.
Signed-off-by: Len Brown <len.brown@intel.com>
On a Skylake with 1500MHz base frequency,
the TSC runs at 1512MHz.
This is because the TSC is no longer in the n*100 MHz BCLK domain,
but is now in the m*24MHz crystal clock domain. (24 MHz * 63 = 1512 MHz)
This adds error to several calculations in turbostat,
unless the TSC sample sizes are adjusted for this difference.
Note that calculations in the time domain are immune
from this issue, as the timing sub-system has already
calibrated the TSC against a known wall clock.
AVG_MHz = APERF_delta/measurement_interval
need no adjustment. APERF_delta is in the BCLK domain,
and measurement_interval is in the time domain.
TSC_MHz = TSC_delta/measurement_interval
needs no adjustment -- as we really do want to report
the actual measured TSC delta here, and measurement_interval
is in the accurate time domain.
%Busy = MPERF_delta/TSC_delta
needs adjustment to use TSC_BCLK_DOMAIN_delta.
TSC_BCLK_DOMAIN_delta = TSC_delta * base_hz / tsc_hz
Bzy_MHz = TSC_delta/APERF_delta/MPERF_delta/measurement_interval
need adjustment as above.
No other metrics in turbostat need to be adjusted.
Before:
CPU Avg_MHz %Busy Bzy_MHz TSC_MHz
- 550 24.84 2216 1512
0 2191 98.73 2219 1514
2 0 0.01 2130 1512
1 9 0.43 2016 1512
3 2 0.08 2016 1512
After:
CPU Avg_MHz %Busy Bzy_MHz TSC_MHz
- 550 25.05 2198 1512
0 2190 99.62 2199 1512
2 0 0.01 2152 1512
1 9 0.46 2000 1512
3 2 0.10 2000 1512
Note that in this example, the "Before" Bzy_MHz
was reported as exceeding the 2200 max turbo rate.
Also, even a pinned spin loop would not be reported
as over 99% busy.

KNL increments APERF and MPERF every 1024 clocks.
This is compliant with the architecture specification,
which requires that only the ratio of APERF/MPERF need be valid.
However, turbostat takes advantage of the fact that these
two MSRs increment every un-halted clock
at the actual and base frequency:
AVG_MHz = APERF_delta/measurement_interval
%Busy = MPERF_delta/TSC_delta
This quirk is needed for these calculations to also work on KNL,
which would otherwise show a value 1024x smaller than expected.

get_cpu_topology() tries to get topology info from all cpus by reading
files in the topology sysfs dir. If a cpu is offlined, since it doesn't
have topology dir, this function fails and returns -1. This causes
functions relying on get_cpu_topology() to fail. For example-
$ cpupower monitor
Cannot read number of available processors
Fix this by skipping fetching topology info for offline cpus.

Pull ACPICA updates from Rafael Wysocki:
"Additional ACPICA material for v4.2-rc1
This will update the ACPICA code in the kernel to upstream revision
20150619 (a bug-fix release mostly including stable-candidate fixes)
and restore an earlier ACPICA commit that had to be reverted due to a
regression introduced by it (the regression is addressed by
blacklisting the only known system affected by it to date).
The only new feature added by this update is the support for
overriding objects in the ACPI namespace and a new ACPI table that can
be used for that called the Override System Definition Table (OSDT).
That should allow us to "patch" the ACPI namespace built from
incomplete or incorrect ACPI System Definition tables (DSDT, SSDT)
during system startup without the need to provide replacements for all
of those tables in the future.

Pull power management and ACPI updates from Rafael Wysocki:
"The rework of backlight interface selection API from Hans de Goede
stands out from the number of commits and the number of affected
places perspective. The cpufreq core fixes from Viresh Kumar are
quite significant too as far as the number of commits goes and because
they should reduce CPU online/offline overhead quite a bit in the
majority of cases.
From the new featues point of view, the ACPICA update (to upstream
revision 20150515) adding support for new ACPI 6 material to ACPICA is
the one that matters the most as some new significant features will be
based on it going forward. Also included is an update of the ACPI
device power management core to follow ACPI 6 (which in turn reflects
the Windows' device PM implementation), a PM core extension to support
wakeup interrupts in a more generic way and support for the ACPI _CCA
device configuration object.
The rest is mostly fixes and cleanups all over and some documentation
updates, including new DT bindings for Operating Performance Points.
There is one fix for a regression introduced in the 4.1 cycle, but it
adds quite a number of lines of code, it wasn't really ready before

The --debug option reads a number of per-package MSRs.
Previously we explicitly read them on cpu0, but recently
turbostat changed to read them on the current "base_cpu".
Update the print-out to reflect base_cpu, rather than
the hard-coded cpu0.

This header containing all MSRs and respective bit definitions
got exported to userspace in conjunction with the big UAPI
shuffle.
But, it doesn't belong in the UAPI headers because userspace can
do its own MSR defines and exporting them from the kernel blocks
us from doing cleanups/renames in that header. Which is
ridiculous - it is not kernel's job to export such a header and
keep MSRs list and their names stable.

There is clearly wrong output when mperf monitor runs in MAX_FREQ_SYSFS mode:
average frequency shows in kHz unit (despite the intended output to be in MHz),
and percentages for C state information are all wrong (including high/negative
values shown).
The problem is that the max_frequency read on initialization isn't used where it
should have been used on mperf_get_count_percent (to estimate the number of
ticks in the given time period), and the value we read from sysfs is in kHz, so
we must divide it to get the MHz value to use in current calculations.
While at it, also I fixed another small issues in the debug output of
max_frequency value in mperf_get_count_freq.

But when cpu0 is offline, turbostat will not run:
# turbostat ls

This patch replaces the hard-coded use of cpu0 in turbostat

Fewer cross-calls may also be needed due to use of current cpu,

Since commit ee0778a301
("tools/power: turbostat: make Makefile a bit more capable")
turbostat's Makefile is using
[...]
BUILD_OUTPUT := $(PWD)
[...]
which obviously causes trouble when building "turbostat" with
make -C /usr/src/linux/tools/power/x86/turbostat ARCH=x86 turbostat
because GNU make does not update nor guarantee that $PWD is set.
This patch changes the Makefile to use $CURDIR instead, which GNU make
guarantees to set and update (i.e. when using "make -C ...") and also
adds support for the O= option (see "make help" in your root of your
kernel source tree for more details).

This reverts commit 5c1de006e8.
While the original commit makes it easier to run cpupower from the
local build directory, it also leaves the binary with a rather poor
rpath of './' in it after it is installed on a system via 'make install'.
This is considered bad practice and can cause cpupower to fail in
rpmbuild with the following error:
ERROR 0004: file '/usr/bin/cpupower' contains an insecure rpath './' in [./]
error: Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.A6u26r (%install)

Replaced previously open-coded Package C-state Limit decoding
with table-driven decoding. In doing so, updated to match January 2015
"Intel(R) 64 and IA-23 Architectures Software Developer's Manual".
In the past, turbostat would print package C-state residency columns
for all package states supported by the model's architecture, even though
a particular SKU may not support them, or they may be disabled by the BIOS.
Now turbostat will skip printing colunns if MSRs indicate that they are not enabled.
eg. many SKUs don't support PC7, and so that column will no longer be printed.

Turbostat can be useful on systems that do not support invariant TSC,
so allow it to run on those systgems.
All arithmetic in turbostat using the TSC value is per-processsor,
so it does not depend on the TSC values being in sync acrosss processors.
Turbostat uses gettimeofday() for the measurement interval
rather than using the TSC directly, so that key metric
is also immune from variable TSC.
Turbostat prints a TSC sanity check column:
TSC_MHz = TSC_delta/interval
If this column is constant and is close to the processor
base frequency, then the TSC is behaving properly.
The other key turbostat columns are calculated this way:
Avg_Mhz = APERF_delta/interval
%Busy = MPERF_delta/TSC_delta
Bzy_MHz = TSC_delta/APERF_delta/MPERF_delta/interval
Tested on Core2 and Core2-Xeon, and so this patch includes
a few other changes to remove the assumption that target
systems are Nehalem and newer.

added MSR_{CORE | GFX | RING}_PERF_LIMIT_REASONS

Each MSR has an "Active" set of bits which describe
current conditions, and a "Logged" set of bits,
which describe what has happened since last cleared.

My previous commit 16b7c275c0 ("tools: cpupower: fix return checks for
sysfs_get_idlestate_count()") was not correct. After looking
at the changelog for cpupower I noticed that Thomas had changed the return of
sysfs_get_idlestate_count() to an unsigned int to simplify the code. The
problem is really that both he (in his original change) and I (in my new
change) missed the obvious that sysfs_get_idlestate_count()
can't return -ENODEV. It should just return 0 for "no c-states".

Red Hat and Fedora use a bug reporting tool that gathers data about
"broken" systems called sosreport. Among other things, it includes the
output of 'cpupower idle-info'. Executing 'cpupower idle-info' on a
system that has cpuidle disabled via 'cpuidle.off=1' results in a 300
second hang in the cpupower application.
ie)
[root@intel-brickland-05]# cpupower idle-info
Could not determine cpuidle driver
Analyzing CPU 0:
Number of idle states: -19
[hang]
The problem is that the cpupower code only checks for a zero return from
sysfs_get_idlestate_count(). The function can return -ENODEV (-19) as
above. This patch fixes callers to sysfs_get_idlestate_count() to check
the right return values.

This patch uses abstract file IO and acpi_log_error() APIs to enhance
cm_get_file_size() so that applications that invoke this API could have
portability improved.
With actual references added to abstract file IO and acpi_log_error(), the
applications need to link oslibcfs.o, utdebug.o, utexcep.o, utmath.o,
utprint.o and utxferror.o.
It is also required to add acpi_os_initialize() invocations if an
application starts to use acpi_log_error().

This patch enhances ACPI_USAGE_xxx/ACPI_OPTION macros to use portable
acpi_os_printf() so that usage functions for applications no longer rely on
the printf() API.
To use acpi_os_printf() exported by osunixxf.c as a replacement of
printf(), applications need to initialize acpi_gbl_output_file to stdout
and initialize acpi_gbl_db_output_flags to ACPI_DB_CONSOLE_OUTPUT. The
latter is automatically done by ACPI_INIT_GLOBAL(), applications need to
link utglobal.o to utilize this mechanism. For GCC, assigning stdout to
acpi_gbl_output_file using ACPI_INIT_GLOBAL() is not possible as stdout is
not a constant in GCC environment. As an alternative solution, stdout
assignment has been put into acpi_os_initialize(). Thus
acpi_os_initialize() need to be invoked very early by the applications to
initialize the default output of acpi_os_printf() to keep behavior
consistency.

This patch introduces formatted printing APIs to handle ACPICA specific
formatted print requirements. Currently only specific OSPMs will use this
customized printing support, Linux kernel doesn't use these APIs at this
time. It will be enabled for Linux kernel resident ACPICA after being well
tested. So currently this patch is a no-op.
The specific formatted printing APIs are useful to ACPICA as:
1. Some portable applications do not link standard C library, so they
cannot use standard formatted print APIs directly.
2. Platform specific printing format may differ and thus not portable, for
example, u64 is %ull for Linux kernel and is %uI64 for some MSVC
versions.
3. Platform specific printing format may conflict with ACPICA's usages
while it is not possible for ACPICA developers to test their code for
all platforms. For example, developers may generate %pRxxx while Linux
kernel treats %pR as structured resource printing and decodes variable
argument as a "struct resource" pointer.
This patch solves above issues by introducing the new APIs.
Note that users of such APIs are not introduced in this patch. Users of
acpi_os_file_vprintf()/acpi_ut_file_printf() need to invoke acpi_os_initialize(),
this should be taken care by the further patches where such users are
introduced. Lv Zheng.

This patch is mainly for acpidump where there are redundant
acpi_os_printf()/acpi_os_vprintf() stubs implemented. This patch cleans up such
specific implementation by linking acpidump to osunixxf.c/oswinxf.c.
To make acpi_os_printf() exported by osunixxf.c/oswinxf.c to behave as the
old acpidump specific ones, applications need to:
1. Initialize acpi_gbl_db_output_flags to ACPI_DB_CONSOLE_OUTPUT.
This is automatically done by ACPI_INIT_GLOBAL(), applications need to
link utglobal.o to utilize this mechanism.
2. Initialize acpi_gbl_output_file to stdout.
For GCC, assigning stdout to acpi_gbl_output_file using ACPI_INIT_GLOBAL()

The utglobal.c is used to define and initialize global variables. It makes
sense if just adding utglobal.o to applications that are using such
variables. But acpi_ut_init_globals() is preventing us from doing so as
this initialization function references other components' initializations
code, which leads to the requirement that many files should also get linked
if one wants to link utglobal.o.
It is possible to just move acpi_ut_init_global() to utinit.c for
applications that require this function to link.
By linking utglobal.o, we can stop defining DEFINE_ACPI_GLOBALS for
applications (currently only acpidump is affected). Lv Zheng.

It is reported that there are buggy BIOSes in the world: AMI uses an XSDT
compiler for early BIOSes, this compiler will generate XSDT with a NULL
entry. The affected BIOS versions are "AMI BIOS F2-F4".
Original solution on Linux is to use an alternative heathy root table
instead of the ill one. This commit is:
Commit: 671cc68dc6
Subject: ACPICA: Back port and refine validation of the XSDT root table.
This is an example of such XSDT dumped from B85-HD3 (AMI F3 BIOS):
[000h 0000 4] Signature : "XSDT" [Extended System Description Table]
[004h 0004 4] Table Length : 00000074

[018h 0024 4] Oem Revision : 01072009
[01Ch 0028 4] Asl Compiler ID : "AMI "
[020h 0032 4] Asl Compiler Revision : 00010013
[024h 0036 8] ACPI Table Address 0 : 00000000BA5F8180
[02Ch 0044 8] ACPI Table Address 1 : 00000000BA5F8290
[034h 0052 8] ACPI Table Address 2 : 00000000BA5F8308

[044h 0068 8] ACPI Table Address 4 : 00000000BA5F9320
[04Ch 0076 8] ACPI Table Address 5 : 00000000BA5F9360

[05Ch 0092 8] ACPI Table Address 7 : 00000000BA5F9708
[064h d100 8] ACPI Table Address 8 : 00000000BA5FC9A8
[06Ch 0108 8] ACPI Table Address 9 : 0000000000000000
But according to the bug report, the XSDT in fact is not broken. In the
above XSDT, ACPI Table Address 1-8 contains the same value as RSDT. The
differences can only be seen on the following 2 entries:
1. The first entry points to a FADT whose Revision is 5 while the first
entry in RSDT points to a FADT whose Revision is 2.
The FADT dumped from the address indicated by the first entry of XSDT:
FACP @ 0x00000000BA5F8180
0000: 46 41 43 50 0C 01 00 00<05>4B 41 4C 41 53 4B 41 FACP.....KALASKA
...
The FADT dumped from the address indicated by the first entry of RSDT:
FACP @ 0x00000000BA5ED0F0
0000: 46 41 43 50 84 00 00 00<02>A7 41 4C 41 53 4B 41 FACP......ALASKA
...
2. The last entry is a NULL terminator.
According to the test result, the Revision 5 FADT is accessible. Thus the
original solution turns out to be a work around that is preventing the
higher revision tables to be used for such platforms (they are all x86-64
platforms, and should use XSDT and higher revision FADT).
This patch offers a new solution, where a sanity check is performed before
installing a table address from XSDT. If the entry is NULL, it is simply
discarded.
Note that, this patch doesn't remove the original solution, so for Linux
kernel, this commit is actually a no-op, but it allows acpidump to be
working on such platforms. By doing so, we allow another easy revertable
commit to enable this feature so that when that commit is reverted, the
useful sanity check will not be affected. Lv Zheng.

This patch adds "-x" and "-x -x" options to disable XSDT for acpidump.
The single "-x" can be used to stop using XSDT, RSDT will be forced to find
static tables, note that XSDT will still be dumped. The double "-x" can
stop dumping XSDT, which is useful when the XSDT address reported by RSDP
is pointing to an invalid address.
It is reported there are platforms having broken XSDT shipped, acpidump
will stop working while accessing such XSDT. This patch adds new option so
that users can force acpidump to dump tables listed in the RSDT. Lv Zheng.

The command "cpupower frequency-info" can be used when using cpupower to
monitor and test processor behaviour to determine if the processor is
behaving as expected. This data can be compared to the output of
/proc/cpuinfo or the output of
/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpuX/cpufreq/scaling_available_frequencies
to determine if the cpu is in an expected state.
When doing this I noticed comparison test failures due to the way the
data is displayed in cpupower. For example,

shows very different values for the available frequency steps. The cpupower
output rounds off values at 2 decimal points and this causes problems with
test scripts. For example, with the data above,
1.064 is 1.06
1.197 is 1.20
1.596 is 1.60
1.995 is 2.00
2.128 is 2.13
and most confusingly,
2.261 is 2.26
2.262 is 2.26
Truncating these values serves no real purpose other than making the output
pretty. Since the default has been to round off these values I am adding
a -n/--no-rounding option to the cpupower utility that will display the
data without rounding off the still significant digits.

that TjMax is stored in bits 23:16 of MSR_TEMPERATURE TARGET (0x1a2).
That's 8 bits, not 7, so it must be masked with 0xFF rather than 0x7F.
The manual has no mention of which values should be considered valid,
which kind of implies that they all are. Arbitrarily discarding values
outside a specific range is wrong. The upper range check had to be
fixed recently (commit 144b44b1) and the lower range check is just as
wrong. See bug #75071:

invalid is 0. Everything else should be accepted.

This userspace tool accesses the EC through the ec_sys debug driver
(through /sys/kernel/debug/ec/ec0/io).
The EC command/data registers cannot be accessed directly, because they
may be manipulated by the AML interpreter in parallel.
The ec_sys driver synchronizes user space (debug) access with the AML
interpreter.

This patch updates tools Makefile to use new acpidump.
ACPICA's acpidump relies on various ACPICA components/common/os_specific
source code. They are located in various kernel folders, being searched
and compiled using vpath technique in Makefile. These files include:
1. drivers/acpi/acpica/acapps.h
2. tools/power/acpi/common/getopt.c
3. tools/power/acpi/common/cmfsize.c
4. tools/power/acpi/os_specific/service_layers/oslinuxtbl.c
5. tools/power/acpi/os_specific/service_layers/osunixdir.c
6. tools/power/acpi/os_specific/service_layers/osunixmap.c
This patch has been tested on DELL Inspiron Mini, acpidump output can be
successfully generated by typing the following commands:
# cd tools/power/acpi
# make DEBUG=false
# sudo make install DESTDIR=/opt
# sudo make uninstall DESTDIR=/opt
# make clean
Or
# cd tools
# make acpi
# sudo make acpi_install
# sudo make acpi_uninstall
# make acpi_clean
A kernel build test is also performed on DELL Inspiron Mini to verify that
the changes done to actypes.h and aclinux.h won't affect the kernel
build process.

Use 8 columns for each number ouput.
We don't fit into 80 columns on most machines,
so keep the format simple.
Print frequency in MHz instead of GHz.
We've got 8 columns now, so use them to
show low frequency in a more natural unit.
Many users didn't understand what %c0 meant,
so re-name it to be %Busy.
Add Avg_MHz column, which is the frequency that many
users expect to see -- the total number of cycles executed
over the measurement interval.
People found the previous GHz to be confusing, since
it was the speed only over the non-idle interval.
That measurement has been re-named Bzy_MHz.

* 'release' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/lenb/linux:
tools/power turbostat: introduce -s to dump counters
tools/power turbostat: remove unused command line option
turbostat: Add option to report joules consumed per sample
turbostat: run on HSX
turbostat: Add a .gitignore to ignore the compiled turbostat binary
turbostat: Clean up error handling; disambiguate error messages; use err and errx
turbostat: Factor out common function to open file and exit on failure
turbostat: Add a helper to parse a single int out of a file
turbostat: Check return value of fscanf
turbostat: Use GCC's CPUID functions to support PIC
turbostat: Don't attempt to printf an off_t with %zx
turbostat: Don't put unprocessed uapi headers in the include path
The new option allows just run turbostat and get dump of counter values. It's
useful when we have something more than one program to test.

Most of turbostat's error handling consists of printing an error (often
including an errno) and exiting. Since perror doesn't support a format
string, those error messages are often ambiguous, such as just showing a
file path, which doesn't uniquely identify which call failed.
turbostat already uses _GNU_SOURCE, so switch to the err and errx
functions from err.h, which take a format string.

Some systems declare fscanf with the warn_unused_result attribute. On
such systems, turbostat generates the following warnings:
turbostat.c: In function 'get_core_id':

turbostat.c: In function 'get_physical_package_id':

turbostat uses inline assembly to call cpuid. On 32-bit x86, on systems
that have certain security features enabled by default that make -fPIC
the default, this causes a build error:
turbostat.c: In function ‘check_cpuid’:
turbostat.c:1906:2: error: PIC register clobbered by ‘ebx’ in ‘asm’
asm("cpuid" : "=a" (fms), "=c" (ecx), "=d" (edx) : "a" (1) : "ebx");
^
GCC provides a header cpuid.h, containing a __get_cpuid function that
works with both PIC and non-PIC. (On PIC, it saves and restores ebx
around the cpuid instruction.) Use that instead.

turbostat uses the format %zx to print an off_t. However, %zx wants a
size_t, not an off_t. On 32-bit targets, those refer to different
types, potentially even with different sizes. Use %llx and a cast
instead, since printf does not have a length modifier for off_t.
Without this patch, when compiling for a 32-bit target:
turbostat.c: In function 'get_msr':
turbostat.c:231:3: warning: format '%zx' expects argument of type 'size_t', but argument 4 has type 'off_t' [-Wformat]

turbostat's Makefile puts arch/x86/include/uapi/ in the include path, so
that it can include <asm/msr.h> from it. It isn't in general safe to
include even uapi headers directly from the kernel tree without
processing them through scripts/headers_install.sh, but asm/msr.h
happens to work.
However, that include path can break with some versions of system
headers, by overriding some system headers with the unprocessed versions
directly from the kernel source. For instance:
In file included from /build/x86-generic/usr/include/bits/sigcontext.h:28:0,
from /build/x86-generic/usr/include/signal.h:339,
from /build/x86-generic/usr/include/sys/wait.h:31,
from turbostat.c:27:
../../../../arch/x86/include/uapi/asm/sigcontext.h:4:28: fatal error: linux/compiler.h: No such file or directory
This occurs because the system bits/sigcontext.h on that build system
includes <asm/sigcontext.h>, and asm/sigcontext.h in the kernel source
includes <linux/compiler.h>, which scripts/headers_install.sh would have
filtered out.
Since turbostat really only wants a single header, just include that one
header rather than putting an entire directory of kernel headers on the
include path.
In the process, switch from msr.h to msr-index.h, since turbostat just
wants the MSR numbers.

If a user calls 'cpupower set --perf-bias 15', the process will end with
a SIGSEGV in libc because cpupower-set passes a NULL optarg to the atoi
call. This is because the getopt_long structure currently has all of
the options as having an optional_argument when they really have a
required argument. We change the structure to use required_argument to
match the short options and it resolves the issue.

Replace direct inclusions of <acpi/acpi.h>, <acpi/acpi_bus.h> and
<acpi/acpi_drivers.h>, which are incorrect, with <linux/acpi.h>
inclusions and remove some inclusions of those files that aren't
necessary.
First of all, <acpi/acpi.h>, <acpi/acpi_bus.h> and <acpi/acpi_drivers.h>
should not be included directly from any files that are built for
CONFIG_ACPI unset, because that generally leads to build warnings about
undefined symbols in !CONFIG_ACPI builds. For CONFIG_ACPI set,
<linux/acpi.h> includes those files and for CONFIG_ACPI unset it
provides stub ACPI symbols to be used in that case.
Second, there are ordering dependencies between those files that always
have to be met. Namely, it is required that <acpi/acpi_bus.h> be included
prior to <acpi/acpi_drivers.h> so that the acpi_pci_root declarations the
latter depends on are always there. And <acpi/acpi.h> which provides
basic ACPICA type declarations should always be included prior to any other
ACPI headers in CONFIG_ACPI builds. That also is taken care of including
<linux/acpi.h> as appropriate.
