f8f2023482 x86: Disable CONFIG_X86_DECODER_SELFTEST in allmod/allyesconfigs
It can take some time to validate the image, make sure
{allyes|allmod}config doesn't enable it.

I'd say randconfig will cover it often enough, and the failure is also
borderline build coverage related: you cannot really make the decoder
test fail via source level changes, only with changes in the build
environment, so I agree with Andi that we can disable this one too.

72548e836b x86/efi: Add EFI framebuffer earlyprintk support
It's incredibly difficult to diagnose early EFI boot issues without
special hardware because earlyprintk=vga doesn't work on EFI systems.

Add support for writing to the EFI framebuffer, via earlyprintk=efi,
which will actually give users a chance of providing debug output.

Merge Kconfig menu diet patches from Dave Hansen:
"I think the "Kernel Hacking" menu has gotten a bit out of hand. It is
over 120 lines long on my system with everything enabled and options
  are scattered around it haphazardly.

        http://sr71.net/~dave/linux/kconfig-horror.png

Let's try to introduce some sanity. This set takes that 120 lines
down to 55 and makes it vastly easier to find some things. It's a
  start.

This set stands on its own, but there is plenty of room for follow-up
patches. The arch-specific debug options still end up getting stuck
in the top-level "kernel hacking" menu. OPTIMIZE_INLINING, for
instance, could obviously go in to the "compiler options" menu, but
the fact that it is defined in arch/ in a separate Kconfig file keeps
it on its own for the moment.

The Signed-off-by's in here look funky. I changed employers while
working on this set, so I have signoffs from both email addresses"

d1a1dc0be8 consolidate per-arch stack overflow debugging options
Original posting:

	http://lkml.kernel.org/r/20121214184202.F54094D9@kernel.stglabs.ibm.com

Several architectures have similar stack debugging config options.
They all pretty much do the same thing, some with slightly
differing help text.

This patch changes the architectures to instead enable a Kconfig
boolean, and then use that boolean in the generic Kconfig.debug
to present the actual menu option. This removes a bunch of
duplication and adds consistency across arches.

5700f743b5 x86: Sanity-check static_cpu_has usage
static_cpu_has may be used only after alternatives have run. Before that
it always returns false if constant folding with __builtin_constant_p()
doesn't happen. And you don't want that.

This patch is the result of me debugging an issue where I overzealously
put static_cpu_has in code which executed before alternatives have run
and had to spend some time with scratching head and cursing at the
monitor.

So add a jump to a warning which screams loudly when we use this
function too early. The alternatives patch that check away in
conjunction with patching the rest of the kernel image.

[ hpa: factored this into its own configuration option. If we want to
have an overarching option, it should be an option which selects
other options, not as a group option in the source code. ]

4d067d8e05 x86: Extend #DF debugging aid to 64-bit
It is sometimes very helpful to be able to pinpoint the location which
causes a double fault before it turns into a triple fault and the
machine reboots. We have this for 32-bit already so extend it to 64-bit.
On 64-bit we get the register snapshot at #DF time and not from the
first exception which actually causes the #DF. It should be close
enough, though.

446f24d119 Kconfig: consolidate CONFIG_DEBUG_STRICT_USER_COPY_CHECKS
The help text for this config is duplicated across the x86, parisc, and
s390 Kconfig.debug files. Arnd Bergman noted that the help text was
slightly misleading and should be fixed to state that enabling this
option isn't a problem when using pre 4.4 gcc.

To simplify the rewording, consolidate the text into lib/Kconfig.debug
and modify it there to be more explicit about when you should say N to
this config.

Also, make the text a bit more generic by stating that this option
enables compile time checks so we can cover architectures which emit
warnings vs. ones which emit errors. The details of how an
architecture decided to implement the checks isn't as important as the
concept of compile time checking of copy_from_user() calls.

While we're doing this, remove all the copy_from_user_overflow() code
that's duplicated many times and place it into lib/ so that any
architecture supporting this option can get the function for free.

That commit left one instance of CONFIG_INVLPG untouched, effectively
disabling DEBUG_TLBFLUSH for X86_32. Since all currently supported

99e8b9ca90 x86, NMI: Add NMI IPI selftest
The previous patch modified the stop cpus path to use NMI
instead of IRQ as the way to communicate to the other cpus to
shutdown. There were some concerns that various machines may
have problems with using an NMI IPI.

This patch creates a selftest to check if NMI is working at
boot. The idea is to help catch any issues before the machine
panics and we learn the hard way.

Loosely based on the locking-selftest.c file, this separate file
runs a couple of simple tests and reports the results. The
output looks like:

...
Brought up 4 CPUs
----------------
| NMI testsuite:
--------------------
  remote IPI: ok |
   local IPI: ok |
--------------------
Good, all 2 testcases passed! |

5ca43f6c3b lib: consolidate DEBUG_STACK_USAGE option
Most arches define CONFIG_DEBUG_STACK_USAGE exactly the same way. Move it
to lib/Kconfig.debug so each arch doesn't have to define it. This
obviously makes the option generic, but that's fine because the config is
already used in generic code.

It's not obvious to me that sysrq-P actually does anything caution by
keeping the most inclusive wording.

6a108a14fa kconfig: rename CONFIG_EMBEDDED to CONFIG_EXPERT
The meaning of CONFIG_EMBEDDED has long since been obsoleted; the option
is used to configure any non-standard kernel with a much larger scope than
only small devices.

This patch renames the option to CONFIG_EXPERT in init/Kconfig and fixes
references to the option throughout the kernel. A new CONFIG_EMBEDDED
option is added that automatically selects CONFIG_EXPERT when enabled and
can be used in the future to isolate options that should only be
considered for embedded systems (RISC architectures, SLOB, etc).

Calling the option "EXPERT" more accurately represents its intention: only
expert users who understand the impact of the configuration changes they
are making should enable it.

84e1c6bb38 x86: Add RO/NX protection for loadable kernel modules
This patch is a logical extension of the protection provided by
CONFIG_DEBUG_RODATA to LKMs. The protection is provided by
splitting module_core and module_init into three logical parts
each and setting appropriate page access permissions for each
individual section:

 1. Code: RO+X
 2. RO data: RO+NX
 3. RW data: RW+NX

In order to achieve proper protection, layout_sections() have
been modified to align each of the three parts mentioned above
onto page boundary. Next, the corresponding page access
permissions are set right before successful exit from
load_module(). Further, free_module() and sys_init_module have
been modified to set module_core and module_init as RW+NX right
before calling module_free().

By default, the original section layout and access flags are
preserved. When compiled with CONFIG_DEBUG_SET_MODULE_RONX=y,
the patch will page-align each group of sections to ensure that
each page contains only one type of content and will enforce
RO/NX for each group of pages.

  -v1: Initial proof-of-concept patch.
-v2: The patch have been re-written to reduce the number of #ifdefs
and to make it architecture-agnostic. Code formatting has also
       been corrected.

       page-alignment is enabled when CONFIG_DEBUG_RODATA=y.

faa4602e47 x86, perf, bts, mm: Delete the never used BTS-ptrace code
Support for the PMU's BTS features has been upstreamed in
v2.6.32, but we still have the old and disabled ptrace-BTS,
as Linus noticed it not so long ago.

It's buggy: TIF_DEBUGCTLMSR is trampling all over that MSR without
regard for other uses (perf) and doesn't provide the flexibility
needed for perf either.

Its users are ptrace-block-step and ptrace-bts, since ptrace-bts
was never used and ptrace-block-step can be implemented using a
much simpler approach.

So axe all 3000 lines of it. That includes the *locked_memory*()
APIs in mm/mlock.c as well.

ad8f4356af x86: Don't use the strict copy checks when branch profiling is in use
The branch profiling creates very complex code for each if
statement, to the point that gcc has trouble even analyzing
something as simple as

  if (count > 5)
      count = 5;

This then means that causing an error on code that gcc cannot
analyze for copy_from_user() and co is not very productive.

This patch excludes the strict copy checks in the case of branch
profiling being enabled.

19c1a6f576 x86 gart: reimplement IOMMU_LEAK feature by using DMA_API_DEBUG
IOMMU_LEAK, GART's own feature, dumps the used IOMMU entries when
IOMMU entries is full, which might be useful to find a bad driver that
eats IOMMU entries.

DMA_API_DEBUG provides the similar feature, debug_dma_dump_mappings,
and it's better than GART's IOMMU_LEAK feature. GART's IOMMU_LEAK
feature doesn't say who uses IOMMU entries so it's hard to find a bad
driver.

This patch reimplements the GART's IOMMU_LEAK feature by using
DMA_API_DEBUG.

6a11f75b6a generic debug pagealloc
CONFIG_DEBUG_PAGEALLOC is now supported by x86, powerpc, sparc64, and
s390. This patch implements it for the rest of the architectures by
filling the pages with poison byte patterns after free_pages() and
verifying the poison patterns before alloc_pages().

This generic one cannot detect invalid page accesses immediately but
invalid read access may cause invalid dereference by poisoned memory and
invalid write access can be detected after a long delay.

6bc5c366b1 trace: mmiotrace to the tracer menu in Kconfig
Impact: cosmetic change in Kconfig menu layout

This patch was originally suggested by Peter Zijlstra, but seems it
was forgotten.

CONFIG_MMIOTRACE and CONFIG_MMIOTRACE_TEST were selectable
directly under the Kernel hacking / debugging menu in the kernel
configuration system. They were present only for x86 and x86_64.

Other tracers that use the ftrace tracing framework are in their own
sub-menu. This patch moves the mmiotrace configuration options there.
Since the Kconfig file, where the tracer menu is, is not architecture
specific, HAVE_MMIOTRACE_SUPPORT is introduced and provided only by
x86/x86_64. CONFIG_MMIOTRACE now depends on it.

3e5095d152 x86: replace CONFIG_X86_SMP with CONFIG_SMP
The x86/Voyager subarch used to have this distinction between

 config X86_SMP
	bool
	depends on SMP && ((X86_32 && !X86_VOYAGER) || X86_64)

This is a pointless distinction - Voyager can (and already does) use
smp_ops to implement various SMP quirks it has - and it can be extended
more to cover all the specialities of Voyager.

So remove this complication in the Kconfig space.

d092633bff Subject: devmem, x86: fix rename of CONFIG_NONPROMISC_DEVMEM
From: Arjan van de Ven <arjan@infradead.org>
Date: Sat, 19 Jul 2008 15:47:17 -0700

CONFIG_NONPROMISC_DEVMEM was a rather confusing name - but renaming it
to CONFIG_PROMISC_DEVMEM causes problems on architectures that do not
support this feature; this patch renames it to CONFIG_STRICT_DEVMEM,
so that architectures can opt-in into it.

( the polarity of the option is still the same as it was originally; it

Mike Travis
23ca4bba3e x86: cleanup early per cpu variables/accesses v4
* Introduce a new PER_CPU macro called "EARLY_PER_CPU". This is
used by some per_cpu variables that are initialized and accessed
before there are per_cpu areas allocated.

["Early" in respect to per_cpu variables is "earlier than the per_cpu
    areas have been setup".]

This patchset adds these new macros:

	DEFINE_EARLY_PER_CPU(_type, _name, _initvalue)
	EXPORT_EARLY_PER_CPU_SYMBOL(_name)
	DECLARE_EARLY_PER_CPU(_type, _name)

	early_per_cpu_ptr(_name)
	early_per_cpu_map(_name, _idx)
	early_per_cpu(_name, _cpu)

The DEFINE macro defines the per_cpu variable as well as the early
map and pointer. It also initializes the per_cpu variable and map
elements to "_initvalue". The early_* macros provide access to
the initial map (usually setup during system init) and the early
pointer. This pointer is initialized to point to the early map
but is then NULL'ed when the actual per_cpu areas are setup. After
that the per_cpu variable is the correct access to the variable.

The early_per_cpu() macro is not very efficient but does show how to
access the variable if you have a function that can be called both
"early" and "late". It tests the early ptr to be NULL, and if not
then it's still valid. Otherwise, the per_cpu variable is used
    instead:

	#define early_per_cpu(_name, _cpu) 			\
		(early_per_cpu_ptr(_name) ? \
			early_per_cpu_ptr(_name)[_cpu] :	\
			per_cpu(_name, _cpu))

A better method is to actually check the pointer manually. In the
case below, numa_set_node can be called both "early" and "late":

void __cpuinit numa_set_node(int cpu, int node)
	{
	    int *cpu_to_node_map = early_per_cpu_ptr(x86_cpu_to_node_map);

	    if (cpu_to_node_map)
		    cpu_to_node_map[cpu] = node;
	    else
		    per_cpu(x86_cpu_to_node_map, cpu) = node;
	}

  * Add a flag "arch_provides_topology_pointers" that indicates pointers
to topology cpumask_t maps are available. Otherwise, use the function
returning the cpumask_t value. This is useful if cpumask_t set size
is very large to avoid copying data on to/off of the stack.

  * The coverage of CONFIG_DEBUG_PER_CPU_MAPS has been increased while
the non-debug case has been optimized a bit.

  * Remove an unreferenced compiler warning in drivers/base/topology.c

  * Clean up #ifdef in setup.c

bd8ac686c7 ftrace: mmiotrace, updates
here is a patch that makes mmiotrace work almost well within the tracing
framework. The patch applies on top of my previous patch. I have my own
output formatting in place now.

Summary of changes:
- fix the NULL dereference that was due to not calling tracing_reset()
- add print_line() callback into struct tracer
- implement print_line() for mmiotrace, producing up-to-spec text
- add my output header, but that is not really called in the right place
- rewrote the main structs in mmiotrace
- added two new trace entry types: TRACE_MMIO_RW and TRACE_MMIO_MAP
- made some functions in trace.c non-static
- check current==NULL in tracing_generic_entry_update()
- fix(?) comparison in trace_seq_printf()

Things seem to work fine except a few issues. Markers (text lines injected
into mmiotrace log) are missing, I did not feel hacking them in before we
have variable length entries. My output header is printed only for 'trace'
file, but not 'trace_pipe'. For some reason, despite my quick fix,
iter->trace is NULL in print_trace_line() when called from 'trace_pipe'
file, which means I don't get proper output formatting.

I only tried by loading nouveau.ko, which just detects the card, and that
is traced fine. I didn't try further. Map, two reads and unmap. Works
perfectly.

I am missing the information about overflows, I'd prefer to have a
counter for lost events. I didn't try, but I guess currently there is no
way of knowning when it overflows?

So, not too far from being fully operational, it seems :-)
And looking at the diffstat, there also is some 700-900 lines of user space
code that just became obsolete.

8b7d89d02e x86: mmiotrace - trace memory mapped IO
Mmiotrace is a tool for trapping memory mapped IO (MMIO) accesses within
the kernel. It is used for debugging and especially for reverse
engineering evil binary drivers.

Mmiotrace works by wrapping the ioremap family of kernel functions and
marking the returned pages as not present. Access to the IO memory
triggers a page fault, which will be handled by mmiotrace's custom page
fault handler. This will single-step the faulted instruction with the
MMIO page marked as present. Access logs are directed to user space via
relay and debug_fs.

This page fault approach is necessary, because binary drivers have
readl/writel etc. calls inlined and therefore extremely difficult to
trap with with e.g. kprobes.

This patch depends on the custom page fault handlers patch.

86069782d6 x86: add a list for custom page fault handlers.
Provides kernel modules a way to register custom page fault handlers.
On every page fault this will call a list of registered functions. The
functions may handle the fault and force do_page_fault() to return
immediately.

This functionality is similar to the now removed page fault notifiers.
Custom page fault handlers are used by debugging and reverse engineering
tools. Mmiotrace is one such tool and a patch to add it into the tree
will follow.

The custom page fault handlers are called earlier in do_page_fault()
than the page fault notifiers were.

6d98ca7364 x86: Mark OPTIMIZE_INLINING broken
So Ingo finally did figure out why UML broke with this option: UML
passes gcc the -fno-unit-at-a-time flag, and apparently that wreaks
havoc with gcc's inlining.

We could turn off -fno-unit-at-a-time for UML for gcc4+ (which is what
x86 does), but there's bad blood about this whole option, and it does
show that the thing is just fragile as heck.

So let tempers cool, and disable the thing, and we can revisit the
decision later.

add CONFIG_OPTIMIZE_INLINING=y.

allow gcc to optimize the kernel image's size by uninlining

forced by Linux to always-inline these functions via a gcc

 #define inline	inline __attribute__((always_inline))

Especially when the user has already selected
CONFIG_OPTIMIZE_FOR_SIZE=y this can make a huge difference in
kernel image size (using a standard Fedora .config):

text data bss dec hex filename

ae531c26c5 x86: introduce /dev/mem restrictions with a config option
This patch introduces a restriction on /dev/mem: Only non-memory can be
read or written unless the newly introduced config option is set.

The X server needs access to /dev/mem for the PCI space, but it doesn't need
access to memory; both the file permissions and SELinux permissions of /dev/mem
just make X effectively super-super powerful. With the exception of the
BIOS area, there's just no valid app that uses /dev/mem on actual memory.
Other popular users of /dev/mem are rootkits and the like.
(note: mmap access of memory via /dev/mem was already not allowed since
a really long time)

People who want to use /dev/mem for kernel debugging can enable the config
option.

The restrictions of this patch have been in the Fedora and RHEL kernels for
at least 4 years without any problems.
