sched/headers: Prepare for new header dependencies before moving code to <linux/sched/task_stack.h>
We are going to split <linux/sched/task_stack.h> out of <linux/sched.h>, which will have to be picked up from other headers and a couple of .c files. Create a trivial placeholder <linux/sched/task_stack.h> file that just maps to <linux/sched.h> to make this patch obviously correct and bisectable. mm: add new mmgrab() helper
Apart from adding the helper function itself, the rest of the kernel is converted mechanically using: git grep -l 'atomic_inc.*mm_count' | xargs sed -i 's/atomic_inc(&\(.*\)->mm_count);/mmgrab\(\1\);/' git grep -l 'atomic_inc.*mm_count' | xargs sed -i 's/atomic_inc(&\(.*\)\.mm_count);/mmgrab\(\&\1\);/' This is needed for a later patch that hooks into the helper, but might be a worthwhile cleanup on its own. kprobes: move kprobe declarations to asm-generic/kprobes.h
Often all is needed is these small helpers, instead of compiler.h or a full kprobes.h. This is important for asm helpers, in fact even some asm/kprobes.h make use of these helpers... instead just keep a generic asm file with helpers useful for asm code with the least amount of clutter as possible. Likewise we need now to also address what to do about this file for both when architectures have CONFIG_HAVE_KPROBES, and when they do not. Then for when architectures have CONFIG_HAVE_KPROBES but have disabled CONFIG_KPROBES. Right now most asm/kprobes.h do not have guards against CONFIG_KPROBES, this means most architecture code cannot include asm/kprobes.h safely. Correct this and add guards for architectures missing them. Additionally provide architectures that not have kprobes support with the default asm-generic solution. This lets us force asm/kprobes.h on the header include/linux/kprobes.h always, but most importantly we can now safely include just asm/kprobes.h on architecture code without bringing the full kitchen sink of header files. Two architectures already provided a guard against CONFIG_KPROBES on its kprobes.h: sh, arch. The rest of the architectures needed gaurds added. We avoid including any not-needed headers on asm/kprobes.h unless kprobes have been enabled. In a subsequent atomic change we can try now to remove compiler.h from include/linux/kprobes.h. During this sweep I've also identified a few architectures defining a common macro needed for both kprobes and ftrace, that of the definition of the breakput instruction up. Some refer to this as BREAKPOINT_INSTRUCTION. This must be kept outside of the #ifdef CONFIG_KPROBES guard. This is a tree wide change and has been kept separate for that reason.
Bart Van Assche noted that the ib DMA mapping code was significantly similar enough to the core DMA mapping code that with a few changes it was possible to remove the IB DMA mapping code entirely and switch the RDMA stack to use the core DMA mapping code. This resulted in a nice set of cleanups, but touched the entire tree. This branch will be submitted separately to Linus at the end of the merge window as per normal practice for tree wide changes like this. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIcBAABAgAGBQJYo06oAAoJELgmozMOVy/d9Z8QALedWHdu98St1L0u2c8sxnR9 2zo/4sF5Vb9u7FpmdIX32L4SQ9s9KhPE8Qp8NtZLf9v10zlDebIRJDpXknXtKooV CAXxX4sxBXV27/UrhbZEfXiPrmm6ccJFyIfRnMU6NlMqh2AtAsRa5AC2/RMp8oUD Med97PFiF0o6TD22/UH1VFbRpX1zjaKyqm7a3as5sJfzNA+UGIZAQ7Euz8000DKZ xCgVLTEwS0FmOujtBkCst7xa9TjuqR1HLOB4DdGvAhP6BHdz2yamM7Qmh9NN+NEX 0BtjsuXomtn6j6AszGC+bpipCZh3NUigcwoFAARXCYFHibBvo4DPdFeGsraFgXdy 1+KyR8CCeQG3Aly5Vwr264RFPGkGpwMj8PsBlXgQVtrlg4rriaCzOJNmIIbfdADw ftqhxBOzReZw77aH2s+9p2ILRfcAmPqhynLvFGFo9LBvsik8LVso7YgZN0xGxwcI IjI/XGC8UskPVsIZBIYA6sl2bYzgOjtBIHiXjRrPlW3uhduIXLrvKFfLPP/5XLAG ehLXK+J0bfsyY9ClmlNS8oH/WdLhXAyy/KNmnj5bRRm9qg6BRJR3bsOBhZJODuoC XgEXFfF6/7roNESWxowff7pK0rTkRg/m/Pa4VQpeO+6NWHE7kgZhL6kyIp5nKcwS 3e7mgpcwC+3XfA/6vU3F =e0Si -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'for-next-dma_ops' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/dledford/rdma Pull rdma DMA mapping updates from Doug Ledford: "Drop IB DMA mapping code and use core DMA code instead. sched/cputime: Remove generic asm headers
cputime_t is now only used by two architectures: * powerpc (when CONFIG_VIRT_CPU_ACCOUNTING_NATIVE=y) * s390 And since the core doesn't use it anymore, we don't need any arch support from the others. So we can remove their stub implementations. A final cleanup would be to provide an efficient pure arch implementation of cputime_to_nsec() for s390 and powerpc and finally remove include/linux/cputime.h . tcp: SOF_TIMESTAMPING_OPT_STATS option for SO_TIMESTAMPING
This patch exports the sender chronograph stats via the socket SO_TIMESTAMPING channel. Currently we can instrument how long a particular application unit of data was queued in TCP by tracking SOF_TIMESTAMPING_TX_SOFTWARE and SOF_TIMESTAMPING_TX_SCHED. Having these sender chronograph stats exported simultaneously along with these timestamps allow further breaking down the various sender limitation. For example, a video server can tell if a particular chunk of video on a connection takes a long time to deliver because TCP was experiencing small receive window. It is not possible to tell before this patch without packet traces. To prepare these stats, the user needs to set SOF_TIMESTAMPING_OPT_STATS and SOF_TIMESTAMPING_OPT_TSONLY flags while requesting other SOF_TIMESTAMPING TX timestamps. When the timestamps are available in the error queue, the stats are returned in a separate control message of type SCM_TIMESTAMPING_OPT_STATS, in a list of TLVs (struct nlattr) of types: TCP_NLA_BUSY_TIME, TCP_NLA_RWND_LIMITED, TCP_NLA_SNDBUF_LIMITED. Unit is microsecond. locking/core: Introduce cpu_relax_yield()
For spinning loops people do often use barrier() or cpu_relax(). For most architectures cpu_relax and barrier are the same, but on some architectures cpu_relax can add some latency. For example on power,sparc64 and arc, cpu_relax can shift the CPU towards other hardware threads in an SMT environment. On s390 cpu_relax does even more, it uses an hypercall to the hypervisor to give up the timeslice. In contrast to the SMT yielding this can result in larger latencies. In some places this latency is unwanted, so another variant "cpu_relax_lowlatency" was introduced. Before this is used in more and more places, lets revert the logic and provide a cpu_relax_yield that can be called in places where yielding is more important than latency. By default this is the same as cpu_relax on all architectures. This removes the 'write' argument from access_process_vm() and replaces it with 'gup_flags' as use of this function previously silently implied FOLL_FORCE, whereas after this patch callers explicitly pass this flag. nmi_backtrace: generate one-line reports for idle cpus
When doing an nmi backtrace of many cores, most of which are idle, the output is a little overwhelming and very uninformative. Suppress messages for cpus that are idling when they are interrupted and just emit one line, "NMI backtrace for N skipped: idling at pc 0xNNN". We do this by grouping all the cpuidle code together into a new .cpuidle.text section, and then checking the address of the interrupted PC to see if it lies within that section. This commit suitably tags x86 and tile idle routines, and only adds in the minimal framework for other architectures. locking/spinlock, arch: Update and fix spin_unlock_wait() implementations
This patch updates/fixes all spin_unlock_wait() implementations. The update is in semantics; where it previously was only a control dependency, we now upgrade to a full load-acquire to match the store-release from the spin_unlock() we waited on. This ensures that when spin_unlock_wait() returns, we're guaranteed to observe the full critical section we waited on. This fixes a number of spin_unlock_wait() users that (not unreasonably) rely on this. I also fixed a number of ticket lock versions to only wait on the current lock holder, instead of for a full unlock, as this is sufficient. Furthermore; again for ticket locks; I added an smp_rmb() in between the initial ticket load and the spin loop testing the current value because I could not convince myself the address dependency is sufficient, esp. if the loads are of different sizes. I'm more than happy to remove this smp_rmb() again if people are certain the address dependency does indeed work as expected. Note: PPC32 will be fixed independently Signed-off-by: Peter Zijlstra (Intel) <peterz@infradead.org> Cc: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Cc: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org> Cc: Paul E. lib/GCD.c: use binary GCD algorithm instead of Euclidean
The binary GCD algorithm is based on the following facts: 1. If a and b are all evens, then gcd(a,b) = 2 * gcd(a/2, b/2) 2. If a is even and b is odd, then gcd(a,b) = gcd(a/2, b) 3. If a and b are all odds, then gcd(a,b) = gcd((a-b)/2, b) = gcd((a+b)/2, b) Even on x86 machines with reasonable division hardware, the binary algorithm runs about 25% faster (80% the execution time) than the division-based Euclidian algorithm. On platforms like Alpha and ARMv6 where division is a function call to emulation code, it's even more significant. There are two variants of the code here, depending on whether a fast __ffs (find least significant set bit) instruction is available. This allows the unpredictable branches in the bit-at-a-time shifting loop to be eliminated. If fast __ffs is not available, the "even/odd" GCD variant is used. I use the following code to benchmark: #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <stdint.h> #include <string.h> #include <time.h> #include <unistd.h> #define swap(a, b) \ do { \ a ^= b; \ b ^= a; \ a ^= b; \ } while (0) unsigned long gcd0(unsigned long a, unsigned long b) { unsigned long r; if (a < b) { swap(a, b); } if (b == 0) return a; while ((r = a % b) != 0) { a = b; b = r; } return b; } unsigned long gcd1(unsigned long a, unsigned long b) { unsigned long r = a | b; if (!a || !b) return r; b >>= __builtin_ctzl(b); for (;;) { a >>= __builtin_ctzl(a); if (a == b) return a << __builtin_ctzl(r); if (a < b) swap(a, b); a -= b; } } unsigned long gcd2(unsigned long a, unsigned long b) { unsigned long r = a | b; if (!a || !b) return r; r &= -r; while (!(b & r)) b >>= 1; for (;;) { while (!(a & r)) a >>= 1; if (a == b) return a; if (a < b) swap(a, b); a -= b; a >>= 1; if (a & r) a += b; a >>= 1; } } unsigned long gcd3(unsigned long a, unsigned long b) { unsigned long r = a | b; if (!a || !b) return r; b >>= __builtin_ctzl(b); if (b == 1) return r & -r; for (;;) { a >>= __builtin_ctzl(a); if (a == 1) return r & -r; if (a == b) return a << __builtin_ctzl(r); if (a < b) swap(a, b); a -= b; } } unsigned long gcd4(unsigned long a, unsigned long b) { unsigned long r = a | b; if (!a || !b) return r; r &= -r; while (!(b & r)) b >>= 1; if (b == r) return r; for (;;) { while (!(a & r)) a >>= 1; if (a == r) return r; if (a == b) return a; if (a < b) swap(a, b); a -= b; a >>= 1; if (a & r) a += b; a >>= 1; } } static unsigned long (*gcd_func[])(unsigned long a, unsigned long b) = { gcd0, gcd1, gcd2, gcd3, gcd4, }; #define TEST_ENTRIES (sizeof(gcd_func) / sizeof(gcd_func[0])) #if defined(__x86_64__) #define rdtscll(val) do { \ unsigned long __a,__d; \ __asm__ __volatile__("rdtsc" : "=a" (__a), "=d" (__d)); \ (val) = ((unsigned long long)__a) | (((unsigned long long)__d)<<32); \ } while(0) static unsigned long long benchmark_gcd_func(unsigned long (*gcd)(unsigned long, unsigned long), unsigned long a, unsigned long b, unsigned long *res) { unsigned long long start, end; unsigned long long ret; unsigned long gcd_res; rdtscll(start); gcd_res = gcd(a, b); rdtscll(end); if (end >= start) ret = end - start; else ret = ~0ULL - start + 1 + end; *res = gcd_res; return ret; } #else static inline struct timespec read_time(void) { struct timespec time; clock_gettime(CLOCK_PROCESS_CPUTIME_ID, &time); return time; } static inline unsigned long long diff_time(struct timespec start, struct timespec end) { struct timespec temp; if ((end.tv_nsec - start.tv_nsec) < 0) { temp.tv_sec = end.tv_sec - start.tv_sec - 1; temp.tv_nsec = 1000000000ULL + end.tv_nsec - start.tv_nsec; } else { temp.tv_sec = end.tv_sec - start.tv_sec; temp.tv_nsec = end.tv_nsec - start.tv_nsec; } return temp.tv_sec * 1000000000ULL + temp.tv_nsec; } static unsigned long long benchmark_gcd_func(unsigned long (*gcd)(unsigned long, unsigned long), unsigned long a, unsigned long b, unsigned long *res) { struct timespec start, end; unsigned long gcd_res; start = read_time(); gcd_res = gcd(a, b); end = read_time(); *res = gcd_res; return diff_time(start, end); } #endif static inline unsigned long get_rand() { if (sizeof(long) == 8) return (unsigned long)rand() << 32 | rand(); else return rand(); } int main(int argc, char **argv) { unsigned int seed = time(0); int loops = 100; int repeats = 1000; unsigned long (*res)[TEST_ENTRIES]; unsigned long long elapsed[TEST_ENTRIES]; int i, j, k; for (;;) { int opt = getopt(argc, argv, "n:r:s:"); /* End condition always first */ if (opt == -1) break; switch (opt) { case 'n': loops = atoi(optarg); break; case 'r': repeats = atoi(optarg); break; case 's': seed = strtoul(optarg, NULL, 10); break; default: /* You won't actually get here. */ break; } } res = malloc(sizeof(unsigned long) * TEST_ENTRIES * loops); memset(elapsed, 0, sizeof(elapsed)); srand(seed); for (j = 0; j < loops; j++) { unsigned long a = get_rand(); /* Do we have args? */ unsigned long b = argc > optind ? strtoul(argv[optind], NULL, 10) : get_rand(); unsigned long long min_elapsed[TEST_ENTRIES]; for (k = 0; k < repeats; k++) { for (i = 0; i < TEST_ENTRIES; i++) { unsigned long long tmp = benchmark_gcd_func(gcd_func[i], a, b, &res[j][i]); if (k == 0 || min_elapsed[i] > tmp) min_elapsed[i] = tmp; } } for (i = 0; i < TEST_ENTRIES; i++) elapsed[i] += min_elapsed[i]; } for (i = 0; i < TEST_ENTRIES; i++) printf("gcd%d: elapsed %llu\n", i, elapsed[i]); k = 0; srand(seed); for (j = 0; j < loops; j++) { unsigned long a = get_rand(); unsigned long b = argc > optind ? strtoul(argv[optind], NULL, 10) : get_rand(); for (i = 1; i < TEST_ENTRIES; i++) { if (res[j][i] != res[j][0]) break; } if (i < TEST_ENTRIES) { if (k == 0) { k = 1; fprintf(stderr, "Error:\n"); } fprintf(stderr, "gcd(%lu, %lu): ", a, b); for (i = 0; i < TEST_ENTRIES; i++) fprintf(stderr, "%ld%s", res[j][i], i < TEST_ENTRIES - 1 ? exit_thread: remove empty bodies
Define HAVE_EXIT_THREAD for archs which want to do something in exit_thread. For others, let's define exit_thread as an empty inline. This is a cleanup before we change the prototype of exit_thread to accept a task parameter. [akpm@linux-foundation.org: fix mips] Signed-off-by: Jiri Slaby <jslaby@suse.cz> Cc: "David S. Merge git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/davem/net-next
Pull networking updates from David Miller: "Highlights: 1) Support more Realtek wireless chips, from Jes Sorenson. 2) New BPF types for per-cpu hash and arrap maps, from Alexei Starovoitov. 3) Make several TCP sysctls per-namespace, from Nikolay Borisov. 4) Allow the use of SO_REUSEPORT in order to do per-thread processing of incoming TCP/UDP connections. The muxing can be done using a BPF program which hashes the incoming packet. From Craig Gallek. 5) Add a multiplexer for TCP streams, to provide a messaged based interface. BPF programs can be used to determine the message boundaries. From Tom Herbert. 6) Add 802.1AE MACSEC support, from Sabrina Dubroca. 7) Avoid factorial complexity when taking down an inetdev interface with lots of configured addresses. We were doing things like traversing the entire address less for each address removed, and flushing the entire netfilter conntrack table for every address as well. 8) Add and use SKB bulk free infrastructure, from Jesper Brouer. 9) Allow offloading u32 classifiers to hardware, and implement for ixgbe, from John Fastabend. 10) Allow configuring IRQ coalescing parameters on a per-queue basis, from Kan Liang. 11) Extend ethtool so that larger link mode masks can be supported. From David Decotigny. 12) Introduce devlink, which can be used to configure port link types (ethernet vs Infiniband, etc.), port splitting, and switch device level attributes as a whole. From Jiri Pirko. 13) Hardware offload support for flower classifiers, from Amir Vadai. 14) Add "Local Checksum Offload". Basically, for a tunneled packet the checksum of the outer header is 'constant' (because with the checksum field filled into the inner protocol header, the payload of the outer frame checksums to 'zero'), and we can take advantage of that in various ways. Merge branch 'smp-hotplug-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip
Pull cpu hotplug updates from Thomas Gleixner: "This is the first part of the ongoing cpu hotplug rework: - Initial implementation of the state machine - Runs all online and prepare down callbacks on the plugged cpu and not on some random processor - Replaces busy loop waiting with completions - Adds tracepoints so the states can be followed" More detailed commentary on this work from an earlier email: "What's wrong with the current cpu hotplug infrastructure? - Asymmetry The hotplug notifier mechanism is asymmetric versus the bringup and teardown. This is mostly caused by the notifier mechanism. - Largely undocumented dependencies While some notifiers use explicitely defined notifier priorities, we have quite some notifiers which use numerical priorities to express dependencies without any documentation why. - Control processor driven Most of the bringup/teardown of a cpu is driven by a control processor. While it is understandable, that preperatory steps, like idle thread creation, memory allocation for and initialization of essential facilities needs to be done before a cpu can boot, there is no reason why everything else must run on a control processor. Before this patch series, bringup looks like this: Control CPU Booting CPU do preparatory steps kick cpu into life do low level init sync with booting cpu sync with control cpu bring the rest up - All or nothing approach There is no way to do partial bringups. That's something which is really desired because we waste e.g. at boot substantial amount of time just busy waiting that the cpu comes to life. That's stupid as we could very well do preparatory steps and the initial IPI for other cpus and then go back and do the necessary low level synchronization with the freshly booted cpu. - Minimal debuggability Due to the notifier based design, it's impossible to switch between two stages of the bringup/teardown back and forth in order to test the correctness. So in many hotplug notifiers the cancel mechanisms are either not existant or completely untested. - Notifier [un]registering is tedious To [un]register notifiers we need to protect against hotplug at every callsite. There is no mechanism that bringup/teardown callbacks are issued on the online cpus, so every caller needs to do it itself. That also includes error rollback. What's the new design? The base of the new design is a symmetric state machine, where both the control processor and the booting/dying cpu execute a well defined set of states. Each state is symmetric in the end, except for some well defined exceptions, and the bringup/teardown can be stopped and reversed at almost all states. So the bringup of a cpu will look like this in the future: Control CPU Booting CPU do preparatory steps kick cpu into life do low level init sync with booting cpu sync with control cpu bring itself up The synchronization step does not require the control cpu to wait. That mechanism can be done asynchronously via a worker or some other mechanism. The teardown can be made very similar, so that the dying cpu cleans up and brings itself down. Cleanups which need to be done after the cpu is gone, can be scheduled asynchronously as well. There is a long way to this, as we need to refactor the notion when a cpu is available. Today we set the cpu online right after it comes out of the low level bringup, which is not really correct. The proper mechanism is to set it to available, i.e. cpu local threads, like softirqd, hotplug thread etc. can be scheduled on that cpu, and once it finished all booting steps, it's set to online, so general workloads can be scheduled on it. The reverse happens on teardown. First thing to do is to forbid scheduling of general workloads, then teardown all the per cpu resources and finally shut it off completely. This patch series implements the basic infrastructure for this at the core level. This includes the following: - Basic state machine implementation with well defined states, so ordering and prioritization can be expressed. - Interfaces to [un]register state callbacks This invokes the bringup/teardown callback on all online cpus with the proper protection in place and [un]installs the callbacks in the state machine array. For callbacks which have no particular ordering requirement we have a dynamic state space, so that drivers don't have to register an explicit hotplug state. If a callback fails, the code automatically does a rollback to the previous state. - Sysfs interface to drive the state machine to a particular step. This is only partially functional today. Full functionality and therefor testability will be achieved once we converted all existing hotplug notifiers over to the new scheme. - Run all CPU_ONLINE/DOWN_PREPARE notifiers on the booting/dying processor: Control CPU Booting CPU do preparatory steps kick cpu into life do low level init sync with booting cpu sync with control cpu wait for boot bring itself up Signal completion to control cpu In a previous step of this work we've done a full tree mechanical conversion of all hotplug notifiers to the new scheme. The balance is a net removal of about 4000 lines of code. This is not included in this series, as we decided to take a different approach. Instead of mechanically converting everything over, we will do a proper overhaul of the usage sites one by one so they nicely fit into the symmetric callback scheme. I decided to do that after I looked at the ugliness of some of the converted sites and figured out that their hotplug mechanism is completely buggered anyway. So there is no point to do a mechanical conversion first as we need to go through the usage sites one by one again in order to achieve a full symmetric and testable behaviour" * 'smp-hotplug-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip: (23 commits) cpu/hotplug: Document states better cpu/hotplug: Fix smpboot thread ordering cpu/hotplug: Remove redundant state check cpu/hotplug: Plug death reporting race rcu: Make CPU_DYING_IDLE an explicit call cpu/hotplug: Make wait for dead cpu completion based cpu/hotplug: Let upcoming cpu bring itself fully up arch/hotplug: Call into idle with a proper state cpu/hotplug: Move online calls to hotplugged cpu cpu/hotplug: Create hotplug threads cpu/hotplug: Split out the state walk into functions cpu/hotplug: Unpark smpboot threads from the state machine cpu/hotplug: Move scheduler cpu_online notifier to hotplug core cpu/hotplug: Implement setup/removal interface cpu/hotplug: Make target state writeable cpu/hotplug: Add sysfs state interface cpu/hotplug: Hand in target state to _cpu_up/down cpu/hotplug: Convert the hotplugged cpu work to a state machine cpu/hotplug: Convert to a state machine for the control processor cpu/hotplug: Add tracepoints ... |

ipv4: Update parameters for csum_tcpudp_magic to their original types
This patch updates all instances of csum_tcpudp_magic and csum_tcpudp_nofold to reflect the types that are usually used as the source inputs. For example the protocol field is populated based on nexthdr which is actually an unsigned 8 bit value. The length is usually populated based on skb->len which is an unsigned integer. This addresses an issue in which the IPv6 function csum_ipv6_magic was generating a checksum using the full 32b of skb->len while csum_tcpudp_magic was only using the lower 16 bits. As a result we could run into issues when attempting to adjust the checksum as there was no protocol agnostic way to update it. With this change the value is still truncated as many architectures use "(len + proto) << 8", however this truncation only occurs for values greater than 16776960 in length and as such is unlikely to occur as we stop the inner headers at ~64K in size. I did have to make a few minor changes in the arm, mn10300, nios2, and score versions of the function in order to support these changes as they were either using things such as an OR to combine the protocol and length, or were using ntohs to convert the length which would have truncated the value. I also updated a few spots in terms of whitespace and type differences for the addresses. Most of this was just to make sure all of the definitions were in sync going forward.
