asm-generic: updates for 6.0
There are three independent sets of changes: - Sai Prakash Ranjan adds tracing support to the asm-generic version of the MMIO accessors, which is intended to help understand problems with device drivers and has been part of Qualcomm's vendor kernels for many years. - A patch from Sebastian Siewior to rework the handling of IRQ stacks in softirqs across architectures, which is needed for enabling PREEMPT_RT. - The last patch to remove the CONFIG_VIRT_TO_BUS option and some of the code behind that, after the last users of this old interface made it in through the netdev, scsi, media and staging trees. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAABCgAdFiEEo6/YBQwIrVS28WGKmmx57+YAGNkFAmLqPPEACgkQmmx57+YA GNlUbQ/+NpIsiA0JUrCGtySt8KrLHdA2dH9lJOR5/iuxfphscPFfWtpcPvcXQWmt a8u7wyI8SHW1ku4U0Y5sO0dBSldDnoIqJ5t4X5d7YNU9yVtEtucqQhZf+GkrPlVD 1HkRu05B7y0k2BMn7BLhSvkpafs3f1lNGXjs8oFBdOF1/zwp/GjcrfCK7KFzqjwU dYrX0SOFlKFd4BZC75VfK+XcKg4LtwIOmJraRRl7alz2Q5Oop2hgjgZxXDPf//vn SPOhXJN/97i1FUpY2TkfHVH1NxbPfjCV4pUnjmLG0Y4NSy9UQ/ZcXHcywIdeuhfa 0LySOIsAqBeccpYYYdg2ubiMDZOXkBfANu/sB9o/EhoHfB4svrbPRDhBIQZMFXJr MJYu+IYce2rvydA/nydo4q++pxR8v1ES1ZIo8bDux+q1CI/zbpQV+f98kPVRA0M7 ajc+5GTIqNIsvHzzadq7eYxcj5Bi8Li2JA9sVkAQ+6iq1TVyeYayMc9eYwONlmqw MD+PFYc651pKtXZCfkLXPIKSwS0uPqBndAibuVhpZ0hxWaCBBdKvY9mrWcPxt0kA tMR8lrosbbrV2K48BFdWTOHvCs2FhHQxPGVPZ/iWuxTA0hHZ9tUlaEkSX+VM57IU KCYQLdWzT8J9vrgqSbgYKlb6pSPz6FIjTfut6NZMmshIbavHV/Q= =aTR0 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'asm-generic-6.0' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic Pull asm-generic updates from Arnd Bergmann: "There are three independent sets of changes: - Sai Prakash Ranjan adds tracing support to the asm-generic version of the MMIO accessors, which is intended to help understand problems with device drivers and has been part of Qualcomm's vendor kernels for many years - A patch from Sebastian Siewior to rework the handling of IRQ stacks in softirqs across architectures, which is needed for enabling PREEMPT_RT - The last patch to remove the CONFIG_VIRT_TO_BUS option and some of the code behind that, after the last users of this old interface made it in through the netdev, scsi, media and staging trees" * tag 'asm-generic-6.0' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic: uapi: asm-generic: fcntl: Fix typo 'the the' in comment arch/*/: remove CONFIG_VIRT_TO_BUS soc: qcom: geni: Disable MMIO tracing for GENI SE serial: qcom_geni_serial: Disable MMIO tracing for geni serial asm-generic/io: Add logging support for MMIO accessors KVM: arm64: Add a flag to disable MMIO trace for nVHE KVM lib: Add register read/write tracing support drm/meson: Fix overflow implicit truncation warnings irqchip/tegra: Fix overflow implicit truncation warnings coresight: etm4x: Use asm-generic IO memory barriers arm64: io: Use asm-generic high level MMIO accessors arch/*: Disable softirq stacks on PREEMPT_RT. |

ARM: SoC defconfig updates for 6.0
This branch includes the usual updates to defconfig files, enabling additional driver support for the supported platforms. There is also a global refresh for all of them that reorders the lines according to the 'savedefconfig' output, but without removing lines that are no longer part of the refresh. I went through the most common removed lines to also address them while making sure to catch renamed options and add them back under the new name. The boardfile deprecation branch is based on top of this to avoid conflicts against removing the unused boardfile configs from the generic defconfig files. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAABCgAdFiEEo6/YBQwIrVS28WGKmmx57+YAGNkFAmLo+14ACgkQmmx57+YA GNnFGw/+Ml2Jich+21ZIcgcAHjrMXq89lCoRa+3clGcxjDl97ZshNumqmRlgXqhM SlcqoA8gxFzx6SAFkCgxmi2m3+Cf8041VglM9YG9zcQnKxvcaRmAnLJ6X8ruwrRy OLHimRi187Wp33c4Y4On0s51g+F+cDHAJA9zmAoGISqPCluTkh/QeD9LXWSfBvFI 6203Hpbge69WzOL520zW7DBaLIRNL8qxSL3Pau6VUwHm2I2GvJ1WHE1S5kQwrd1a LKERfZswaBQtV3RJFRPigEqXzdzWAnD6XBLe1idGzaU52YAY6pxqQHTzOeVxlEPP m+w4jN6wEGK+iu8f0hjEnfr2qtM1Qx45UCvmg+tyY7WIwMWN304WDi+vgCpXPUWp W+IZNk6KPY9Bd3OauFtsiHHz9xXALidJRJT2JojnKDnQKK9J/iTpnBU2fPbpDNiC XOWcbm6e2R7U34LZZE2ursVqPk1iklXfb49/A+nl2x4MkxeX2va1QgyqJf6T6I9y 1avFY4V62lWvrEEMyKu+d7lpRKs3gj0Ky8W/R6+zLlnh4R2r9R+/BJAWi1MiP7qU ZpqWPc7m6cJcUC8Jgf2k+sDG8FNUWn0o6LNbCgv1m5GEYzzr1K9b3+KKV5JB1A9C Hjz9NMRXEOHm+QNvmbgXpCZjx9ga3Av+XAKN4pZ7JG9gc8fnrp0= =2GbW -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'arm-defconfig-6.0' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/soc/soc Pull ARM SoC defconfig updates from Arnd Bergmann: "This branch includes the usual updates to defconfig files, enabling additional driver support for the supported platforms. PCI: Move isa_dma_bridge_buggy out of asm/dma.h
The isa_dma_bridge_buggy symbol is only used for x86_32, and only x86_32 platforms or quirks ever set it. Add a new linux/isa-dma.h header that #defines isa_dma_bridge_buggy to 0 except on x86_32, where we keep it as a variable, and remove all the arch- specific definitions. PCI: Remove pci_get_legacy_ide_irq() and asm-generic/pci.h
pci_get_legacy_ide_irq() is only used on platforms that support PNP, so many architectures define it but never use it. Replace uses of it with ATA_PRIMARY_IRQ() and ATA_SECONDARY_IRQ(), which provide the same functionality. Since pci_get_legacy_ide_irq() is no longer used, remove all the architecture-specific definitions of it as well as asm-generic/pci.h, which only provides pci_get_legacy_ide_irq() [bhelgaas: commit log] Co-developed-by: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20220722214944.831438-2-shorne@gmail.com Signed-off-by: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de> Signed-off-by: Stafford Horne <shorne@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Bjorn Helgaas <bhelgaas@google.com> Reviewed-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Acked-by: Geert Uytterhoeven <geert@linux-m68k.org> Acked-by: Pierre Morel <pmorel@linux.ibm.com> Acked-by: Rafael J. Now all the platforms enable ARCH_HAS_GET_PAGE_PROT. They define and export own vm_get_page_prot() whether custom or standard DECLARE_VM_GET_PAGE_PROT. Since the previous commit already updated places that needed to call irq_data_update_affinity, this commit updates the remaining code that either did not modify the cpumask or immediately passed the modified mask to irq_set_affinity. bitops: unify non-atomic bitops prototypes across architectures
Currently, there is a mess with the prototypes of the non-atomic bitops across the different architectures: ret bool, int, unsigned long nr int, long, unsigned int, unsigned long addr volatile unsigned long *, volatile void * Thankfully, it doesn't provoke any bugs, but can sometimes make the compiler angry when it's not handy at all. Adjust all the prototypes to the following standard: ret bool retval can be only 0 or 1 nr unsigned long native; signed makes no sense addr volatile unsigned long * bitmaps are arrays of ulongs Next, some architectures don't define 'arch_' versions as they don't support instrumentation, others do. To make sure there is always the same set of callables present and to ease any potential future changes, make them all follow the rule: * architecture-specific files define only 'arch_' versions; * non-prefixed versions can be defined only in asm-generic files; and place the non-prefixed definitions into a new file in asm-generic to be included by non-instrumented architectures. Finally, add some static assertions in order to prevent people from making a mess in this room again. I also used the %__always_inline attribute consistently, so that they always get resolved to the actual operations. mm: avoid unnecessary page fault retires on shared memory types
I observed that for each of the shared file-backed page faults, we're very likely to retry one more time for the 1st write fault upon no page. It's because we'll need to release the mmap lock for dirty rate limit purpose with balance_dirty_pages_ratelimited() (in fault_dirty_shared_page()). Then after that throttling we return VM_FAULT_RETRY. We did that probably because VM_FAULT_RETRY is the only way we can return to the fault handler at that time telling it we've released the mmap lock. However that's not ideal because it's very likely the fault does not need to be retried at all since the pgtable was well installed before the throttling, so the next continuous fault (including taking mmap read lock, walk the pgtable, etc.) could be in most cases unnecessary. It's not only slowing down page faults for shared file-backed, but also add more mmap lock contention which is in most cases not needed at all. To observe this, one could try to write to some shmem page and look at "pgfault" value in /proc/vmstat, then we should expect 2 counts for each shmem write simply because we retried, and vm event "pgfault" will capture that. To make it more efficient, add a new VM_FAULT_COMPLETED return code just to show that we've completed the whole fault and released the lock. It's also a hint that we should very possibly not need another fault immediately on this page because we've just completed it. This patch provides a ~12% perf boost on my aarch64 test VM with a simple program sequentially dirtying 400MB shmem file being mmap()ed and these are the time it needs: Before: 650.980 ms (+-1.94%) After: 569.396 ms (+-1.38%) I believe it could help more than that. We need some special care on GUP and the s390 pgfault handler (for gmap code before returning from pgfault), the rest changes in the page fault handlers should be relatively straightforward. Another thing to mention is that mm_account_fault() does take this new fault as a generic fault to be accounted, unlike VM_FAULT_RETRY. I explicitly didn't touch hmm_vma_fault() and break_ksm() because they do not handle VM_FAULT_RETRY even with existing code, so I'm literally keeping them as-is. mm: change huge_ptep_clear_flush() to return the original pte
Patch series "Fix CONT-PTE/PMD size hugetlb issue when unmapping or migrating", v4. presently, migrating a hugetlb page or unmapping a poisoned hugetlb page, we'll use ptep_clear_flush() and set_pte_at() to nuke the page table entry and remap it, and this is incorrect for CONT-PTE or CONT-PMD size hugetlb page, which will cause potential data consistent issue. This patch set will change to use hugetlb related APIs to fix this issue. Note: Mike pointed out the huge_ptep_get() will only return the one specific value, and it would not take into account the dirty or young bits of CONT-PTE/PMDs like the huge_ptep_get_and_clear() [1]. This inconsistent issue is not introduced by this patch set, and this issue will be addressed in another thread [2]. Meanwhile the uffd for hugetlb case [3] pointed out by Gerald also needs another patch to address. fork: Generalize PF_IO_WORKER handling
Add fn and fn_arg members into struct kernel_clone_args and test for them in copy_thread (instead of testing for PF_KTHREAD | PF_IO_WORKER). This allows any task that wants to be a user space task that only runs in kernel mode to use this functionality. The code on x86 is an exception and still retains a PF_KTHREAD test because x86 unlikely everything else handles kthreads slightly differently than user space tasks that start with a function. The functions that created tasks that start with a function have been updated to set ".fn" and ".fn_arg" instead of ".stack" and ".stack_size". These functions are fork_idle(), create_io_thread(), kernel_thread(), and user_mode_thread(). Link: https://lkml.kernel.org/r/20220506141512.516114-4-ebiederm@xmission.com Signed-off-by: "Eric W. fork: Pass struct kernel_clone_args into copy_thread
With io_uring we have started supporting tasks that are for most purposes user space tasks that exclusively run code in kernel mode. The kernel task that exec's init and tasks that exec user mode helpers are also user mode tasks that just run kernel code until they call kernel execve. Pass kernel_clone_args into copy_thread so these oddball tasks can be supported more cleanly and easily. v2: Fix spelling of kenrel_clone_args on h8300 Link: https://lkml.kernel.org/r/20220506141512.516114-2-ebiederm@xmission.com Signed-off-by: "Eric W. vmcore: convert copy_oldmem_page() to take an iov_iter
Patch series "Convert vmcore to use an iov_iter", v5. For some reason several people have been sending bad patches to fix compiler warnings in vmcore recently. Here's how it should be done. Compile-tested only on x86. As noted in the first patch, s390 should take this conversion a bit further, but I'm not inclined to do that work myself. This patch (of 3): Instead of passing in a 'buf' and 'userbuf' argument, pass in an iov_iter. s390 needs more work to pass the iov_iter down further, or refactor, but I'd be more comfortable if someone who can test on s390 did that work. It's more convenient to convert the whole of read_from_oldmem() to take an iov_iter at the same time, so rename it to read_from_oldmem_iter() and add a temporary read_from_oldmem() wrapper that creates an iov_iter. binfmt_flat: Remove shared library support
In a recent discussion[1] it was reported that the binfmt_flat library support was only ever used on m68k and even on m68k has not been used in a very long time. The structure of binfmt_flat is different from all of the other binfmt implementations because of this shared library support and it made life and code review more effort when I refactored the code in fs/exec.c. Since in practice the code is dead remove the binfmt_flat shared library support and make maintenance of the code easier. ptrace: Cleanups for v5.18
This set of changes removes tracehook.h, moves modification of all of the ptrace fields inside of siglock to remove races, adds a missing permission check to ptrace.c The removal of tracehook.h is quite significant as it has been a major source of confusion in recent years. Much of that confusion was around task_work and TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL (which I have now decoupled making the semantics clearer). For people who don't know tracehook.h is a vestiage of an attempt to implement uprobes like functionality that was never fully merged, and was later superseeded by uprobes when uprobes was merged. For many years now we have been removing what tracehook functionaly a little bit at a time. To the point where now anything left in tracehook.h is some weird strange thing that is difficult to understand. Eric W. asm-generic updates for 5.18
There are three sets of updates for 5.18 in the asm-generic tree: - The set_fs()/get_fs() infrastructure gets removed for good. This was already gone from all major architectures, but now we can finally remove it everywhere, which loses some particularly tricky and error-prone code. There is a small merge conflict against a parisc cleanup, the solution is to use their new version. - The nds32 architecture ends its tenure in the Linux kernel. The hardware is still used and the code is in reasonable shape, but the mainline port is not actively maintained any more, as all remaining users are thought to run vendor kernels that would never be updated to a future release. There are some obvious conflicts against changes to the removed files. - A series from Masahiro Yamada cleans up some of the uapi header files to pass the compile-time checks. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAABCgAdFiEEo6/YBQwIrVS28WGKmmx57+YAGNkFAmI69BsACgkQmmx57+YA GNn/zA//f4d5VTT0ThhRxRWTu9BdThGHoB8TUcY7iOhbsWu0X/913NItRC3UeWNl IdmisaXgVtirg1dcC2pWUmrcHdoWOCEGfK4+Zr2NhSWfuZDWvODHK9pGWk4WLnhe cQgUNBvIuuAMryGtrOBwHPO4TpfCyy2ioeVP36ZfcsWXdDxTrqfaq/56mk3sxIP6 sUTk1UEjut9NG4C9xIIvcSU50R3l6LryQE/H9kyTLtaSvfvTOvprcVYCq0GPmSzo DtQ1Wwa9zbJ+4EqoMiP5RrgQwWvOTg2iRByLU8ytwlX3e/SEF0uihvMv1FQbL8zG G8RhGUOKQSEhaBfc3lIkm8GpOVPh0uHzB6zhn7daVmAWtazRD2Nu59BMjipa+ims a8Z58iHH7jRAnKeEkVZqXKb1CEiUxaQx/IeVPzN4QlwMhDtwrI76LY7ZJ1zCqTGY ENG0yRLav1XselYBslOYXGtOEWcY5EZPWqLyWbp4P9vz2g0Fe0gZxoIOvPmNQc89 QnfXpCt7vm/DGkyO255myu08GOLeMkisVqUIzLDB9avlym5mri7T7vk9abBa2YyO CRpTL5gl1/qKPWuH1UI5mvhT+sbbBE2SUHSuy84btns39ZKKKynwCtdu+hSQkKLE h9pV30Gf1cLTD4JAE0RWlUgOmbBLVp34loTOexQj4MrLM1noOnw= =vtCN -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'asm-generic-5.18' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic Pull asm-generic updates from Arnd Bergmann: "There are three sets of updates for 5.18 in the asm-generic tree: - The set_fs()/get_fs() infrastructure gets removed for good. drivers/base/node: consolidate node device subsystem initialization in node_dev_init()
... and call node_dev_init() after memory_dev_init() from driver_init(), so before any of the existing arch/subsys calls. All online nodes should be known at that point: early during boot, arch code determines node and zone ranges and sets the relevant nodes online; usually this happens in setup_arch(). This is in line with memory_dev_init(), which initializes the memory device subsystem and creates all memory block devices. Similar to memory_dev_init(), panic() if anything goes wrong, we don't want to continue with such basic initialization errors. The important part is that node_dev_init() gets called after memory_dev_init() and after cpu_dev_init(), but before any of the relevant archs call register_cpu() to register the new cpu device under the node device. The latter should be the case for the current users of topology_init(). usercopy: Check valid lifetime via stack depth
One of the things that CONFIG_HARDENED_USERCOPY sanity-checks is whether an object that is about to be copied to/from userspace is overlapping the stack at all. If it is, it performs a number of inexpensive bounds checks. One of the finer-grained checks is whether an object crosses stack frames within the stack region. Doing this on x86 with CONFIG_FRAME_POINTER was cheap/easy. Doing it with ORC was deemed too heavy, and was left out (a while ago), leaving the courser whole-stack check. The LKDTM tests USERCOPY_STACK_FRAME_TO and USERCOPY_STACK_FRAME_FROM try to exercise these cross-frame cases to validate the defense is working. They have been failing ever since ORC was added (which was expected). While Muhammad was investigating various LKDTM failures[1], he asked me for additional details on them, and I realized that when exact stack frame boundary checking is not available (i.e. everything except x86 with FRAME_POINTER), it could check if a stack object is at least "current depth valid", in the sense that any object within the stack region but not between start-of-stack and current_stack_pointer should be considered unavailable (i.e. its lifetime is from a call no longer present on the stack). Introduce ARCH_HAS_CURRENT_STACK_POINTER to track which architectures have actually implemented the common global register alias. Additionally report usercopy bounds checking failures with an offset from current_stack_pointer, which may assist with diagnosing failures. The LKDTM USERCOPY_STACK_FRAME_TO and USERCOPY_STACK_FRAME_FROM tests (once slightly adjusted in a separate patch) pass again with this fixed. sh: remove CONFIG_SET_FS support
sh uses set_fs/get_fs only in one file, to handle address errors in both user and kernel memory. It already has an abstraction to differentiate between I/O and memory, so adding a third class for kernel memory fits into the same scheme and lets us kill off CONFIG_SET_FS. uaccess: generalize access_ok()
There are many different ways that access_ok() is defined across architectures, but in the end, they all just compare against the user_addr_max() value or they accept anything. Provide one definition that works for most architectures, checking against TASK_SIZE_MAX for user processes or skipping the check inside of uaccess_kernel() sections. For architectures without CONFIG_SET_FS(), this should be the fastest check, as it comes down to a single comparison of a pointer against a compile-time constant, while the architecture specific versions tend to do something more complex for historic reasons or get something wrong. Type checking for __user annotations is handled inconsistently across architectures, but this is easily simplified as well by using an inline function that takes a 'const void __user *' argument. A handful of callers need an extra __user annotation for this. Some architectures had trick to use 33-bit or 65-bit arithmetic on the addresses to calculate the overflow, however this simpler version uses fewer registers, which means it can produce better object code in the end despite needing a second (statically predicted) branch. treewide: Replace zero-length arrays with flexible-array members
There is a regular need in the kernel to provide a way to declare having a dynamically sized set of trailing elements in a structure. Kernel code should always use “flexible array members”[1] for these cases. The older style of one-element or zero-length arrays should no longer be used[2]. Merge branch 'signal-for-v5.17' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace
Pull signal/exit/ptrace updates from Eric Biederman: "This set of changes deletes some dead code, makes a lot of cleanups which hopefully make the code easier to follow, and fixes bugs found along the way. The end-game which I have not yet reached yet is for fatal signals that generate coredumps to be short-circuit deliverable from complete_signal, for force_siginfo_to_task not to require changing userspace configured signal delivery state, and for the ptrace stops to always happen in locations where we can guarantee on all architectures that the all of the registers are saved and available on the stack. Removal of profile_task_ext, profile_munmap, and profile_handoff_task are the big successes for dead code removal this round. A bunch of small bug fixes are included, as most of the issues reported were small enough that they would not affect bisection so I simply added the fixes and did not fold the fixes into the changes they were fixing. There was a bug that broke coredumps piped to systemd-coredump. I dropped the change that caused that bug and replaced it entirely with something much more restrained. Unfortunately that required some rebasing. Some successes after this set of changes: There are few enough calls to do_exit to audit in a reasonable amount of time. The lifetime of struct kthread now matches the lifetime of struct task, and the pointer to struct kthread is no longer stored in set_child_tid. The flag SIGNAL_GROUP_COREDUMP is removed. The field group_exit_task is removed. Issues where task->exit_code was examined with signal->group_exit_code should been examined were fixed. There are several loosely related changes included because I am cleaning up and if I don't include them they will probably get lost. kbuild: rename cmd_{bzip2,lzma,lzo,lz4,xzkern,zstd22}
GZIP-compressed files end with 4 byte data that represents the size of the original input. The decompressors (the self-extracting kernel) exploit it to know the vmlinux size beforehand. To mimic the GZIP's trailer, Kbuild provides cmd_{bzip2,lzma,lzo,lz4,xzkern,zstd22}. Unfortunately these macros are used everywhere despite the appended size data is only useful for the decompressors. There is no guarantee that such hand-crafted trailers are safely ignored. In fact, the kernel refuses compressed initramdfs with the garbage data. That is why usr/Makefile overrides size_append to make it no-op. To limit the use of such broken compressed files, this commit renames the existing macros as follows: cmd_bzip2 --> cmd_bzip2_with_size cmd_lzma --> cmd_lzma_with_size cmd_lzo --> cmd_lzo_with_size cmd_lz4 --> cmd_lz4_with_size cmd_xzkern --> cmd_xzkern_with_size cmd_zstd22 --> cmd_zstd22_with_size To keep the decompressors working, I updated the following Makefiles accordingly: arch/arm/boot/compressed/Makefile arch/h8300/boot/compressed/Makefile arch/mips/boot/compressed/Makefile arch/parisc/boot/compressed/Makefile arch/s390/boot/compressed/Makefile arch/sh/boot/compressed/Makefile arch/x86/boot/compressed/Makefile I reused the current macro names for the normal usecases; they produce the compressed data in the proper format. I did not touch the following: arch/arc/boot/Makefile arch/arm64/boot/Makefile arch/csky/boot/Makefile arch/mips/boot/Makefile arch/riscv/boot/Makefile arch/sh/boot/Makefile kernel/Makefile This means those Makefiles will stop appending the size data. I dropped the 'override size_append' hack from usr/Makefile. Signed-off-by: Masahiro Yamada <masahiroy@kernel.org> Reviewed-by: Nicolas Schier <n.schier@avm.de> |

kbuild: do not quote string values in include/config/auto.conf
The previous commit fixed up all shell scripts to not include include/config/auto.conf. Now that include/config/auto.conf is only included by Makefiles, we can change it into a more Make-friendly form. Previously, Kconfig output string values enclosed with double-quotes (both in the .config and include/config/auto.conf): CONFIG_X="foo bar" Unlike shell, Make handles double-quotes (and single-quotes as well) verbatim. We must rip them off when used. There are some patterns: [1] $(patsubst "%",%,$(CONFIG_X)) [2] $(CONFIG_X:"%"=%) [3] $(subst ",,$(CONFIG_X)) [4] $(shell echo $(CONFIG_X)) These are not only ugly, but also fragile. [1] and [2] do not work if the value contains spaces, like CONFIG_X=" foo bar " [3] does not work correctly if the value contains double-quotes like CONFIG_X="foo\"bar" [4] seems to work better, but has a cost of forking a process. Anyway, quoted strings were always PITA for our Makefiles. This commit changes Kconfig to stop quoting in include/config/auto.conf. These are the string type symbols referenced in Makefiles or scripts: ACPI_CUSTOM_DSDT_FILE ARC_BUILTIN_DTB_NAME ARC_TUNE_MCPU BUILTIN_DTB_SOURCE CC_IMPLICIT_FALLTHROUGH CC_VERSION_TEXT CFG80211_EXTRA_REGDB_KEYDIR EXTRA_FIRMWARE EXTRA_FIRMWARE_DIR EXTRA_TARGETS H8300_BUILTIN_DTB INITRAMFS_SOURCE LOCALVERSION MODULE_SIG_HASH MODULE_SIG_KEY NDS32_BUILTIN_DTB NIOS2_DTB_SOURCE OPENRISC_BUILTIN_DTB SOC_CANAAN_K210_DTB_SOURCE SYSTEM_BLACKLIST_HASH_LIST SYSTEM_REVOCATION_KEYS SYSTEM_TRUSTED_KEYS TARGET_CPU UNUSED_KSYMS_WHITELIST XILINX_MICROBLAZE0_FAMILY XILINX_MICROBLAZE0_HW_VER XTENSA_VARIANT_NAME I checked them one by one, and fixed up the code where necessary. exit: Add and use make_task_dead.
There are two big uses of do_exit. The first is it's design use to be the guts of the exit(2) system call. The second use is to terminate a task after something catastrophic has happened like a NULL pointer in kernel code. Add a function make_task_dead that is initialy exactly the same as do_exit to cover the cases where do_exit is called to handle catastrophic failure. In time this can probably be reduced to just a light wrapper around do_task_dead. For now keep it exactly the same so that there will be no behavioral differences introducing this new concept. Replace all of the uses of do_exit that use it for catastraphic task cleanup with make_task_dead to make it clear what the code is doing. As part of this rename rewind_stack_do_exit rewind_stack_and_make_dead. Signed-off-by: "Eric W. Biederman" <ebiederm@xmission.com> |

locking: Allow to include asm/spinlock_types.h from linux/spinlock_types_raw.h
The printk header file includes ratelimit_types.h for its __ratelimit() based usage. It is required for the static initializer used in printk_ratelimited(). It uses a raw_spinlock_t and includes the spinlock_types.h. PREEMPT_RT substitutes spinlock_t with a rtmutex based implementation and so its spinlock_t implmentation (provided by spinlock_rt.h) includes rtmutex.h and atomic.h which leads to recursive includes where defines are missing. By including only the raw_spinlock_t defines it avoids the atomic.h related includes at this stage. Add linux/cacheflush.h
Many architectures do not include asm-generic/cacheflush.h, so turn
the includes on their head and add linux/cacheflush.h which includes
asm/cacheflush.h.
Move the flush_dcache_folio() declaration from asm-generic/cacheflush.h
to linux/cacheflush.h and change linux/highmem.h to include
linux/cacheflush.h instead of asm/cacheflush.h so that all necessary
places will see flush_dcache_folio().
More functions should have their default implementations moved in the
future, but those are for follow-on patches. This fixes csky, sparc and
sparc64 which were missed in the commit which added flush_dcache_folio().

Pull exit cleanups from Eric Biederman: "While looking at some issues related to the exit path in the kernel I found several instances where the code is not using the existing abstractions properly. This set of changes introduces force_fatal_sig a way of sending a signal and not allowing it to be caught, and corrects the misuse of the existing abstractions that I found. A lot of the misuse of the existing abstractions are silly things such as doing something after calling a no return function, rolling BUG by hand, doing more work than necessary to terminate a kernel thread, or calling do_exit(SIGKILL) instead of calling force_sig(SIGKILL). In the review a deficiency in force_fatal_sig and force_sig_seccomp where ptrace or sigaction could prevent the delivery of the signal was found. I have added a change that adds SA_IMMUTABLE to change that makes it impossible to interrupt the delivery of those signals, and allows backporting to fix force_sig_seccomp And Arnd found an issue where a function passed to kthread_run had the wrong prototype, and after my cleanup was failing to build." * 'exit-cleanups-for-v5.16' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace: (23 commits) soc: ti: fix wkup_m3_rproc_boot_thread return type signal: Add SA_IMMUTABLE to ensure forced siganls do not get changed signal: Replace force_sigsegv(SIGSEGV) with force_fatal_sig(SIGSEGV) exit/r8188eu: Replace the macro thread_exit with a simple return 0 exit/rtl8712: Replace the macro thread_exit with a simple return 0 exit/rtl8723bs: Replace the macro thread_exit with a simple return 0 signal/x86: In emulate_vsyscall force a signal instead of calling do_exit signal/sparc32: In setup_rt_frame and setup_fram use force_fatal_sig signal/sparc32: Exit with a fatal signal when try_to_clear_window_buffer fails exit/syscall_user_dispatch: Send ordinary signals on failure signal: Implement force_fatal_sig exit/kthread: Have kernel threads return instead of calling do_exit signal/s390: Use force_sigsegv in default_trap_handler signal/vm86_32: Properly send SIGSEGV when the vm86 state cannot be saved. signal/vm86_32: Replace open coded BUG_ON with an actual BUG_ON signal/sparc: In setup_tsb_params convert open coded BUG into BUG signal/powerpc: On swapcontext failure force SIGSEGV signal/sh: Use force_sig(SIGKILL) instead of do_group_exit(SIGKILL) signal/mips: Update (_save|_restore)_fp_context to fail with -EFAULT signal/sparc32: Remove unreachable do_exit in do_sparc_fault ... |

memblock: rename memblock_free to memblock_phys_free
Since memblock_free() operates on a physical range, make its name reflect it and rename it to memblock_phys_free(), so it will be a logical counterpart to memblock_phys_alloc(). There's been pressure to allow non root to tracefs in a controlled fashion, and using groups is probably the safest. - Bootconfig memory managament updates. - Bootconfig clean up to have the tools directory be less dependent on changes in the kernel tree. - Allow perf to be traced by function tracer. - Rewrite of function graph tracer to be a callback from the function tracer instead of having its own trampoline (this change will happen on an arch by arch basis, and currently only x86_64 implements it). - Allow multiple direct trampolines (bpf hooks to functions) be batched together in one synchronization. - Allow histogram triggers to add variables that can perform calculations against the event's fields. - Use the linker to determine architecture callbacks from the ftrace trampoline to allow for proper parameter prototypes and prevent warnings from the compiler. - Extend histogram triggers to key off of variables. - Have trace recursion use bit magic to determine preempt context over if branches. - Have trace recursion disable preemption as all use cases do anyway. - Added testing for verification of tracing utilities. - Various small clean ups and fixes. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iIoEABYIADIWIQRRSw7ePDh/lE+zeZMp5XQQmuv6qgUCYYBdxhQccm9zdGVkdEBn b29kbWlzLm9yZwAKCRAp5XQQmuv6qp1sAQD2oYFwaG3sx872gj/myBcHIBSKdiki Hry5csd8zYDBpgD+Poylopt5JIbeDuoYw/BedgEXmscZ8Qr7VzjAXdnv/Q4= =Loz8 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'trace-v5.16' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rostedt/linux-trace Pull tracing updates from Steven Rostedt: - kprobes: Restructured stack unwinder to show properly on x86 when a stack dump happens from a kretprobe callback. - Fix to bootconfig parsing - Have tracefs allow owner and group permissions by default (only denying others). ftrace/sh: Add arch_ftrace_ops_list_func stub to have compressed image still link
Using the linker script to fix an issue where some archs call the
function tracer with just the ip (instruction pointer) and pip (parent
instruction pointer) where as more up to date archs also pass in the
associated ftrace_ops and the ftrace_regs pointer, the generic code
will be called either with two parameters or four. To avoid any C
undefined behavior of calling two parameters to four or four to two
parameter function, two functions are created, where a preprocessor
macro uses the one that matches the architecture. As the function
pointers for them may be different, a typecast is used. But this
triggers issues with newer compilers that will fail due to -Werror.
A linker trick is now used to map the generic function to the function
that is used (note the generic function is only used to set the default
function callback). The linker trick defines ftrace_ops_list_func (the
generic function) to arch_ftrace_ops_list_func (the arch defined one).
Link: https://lore.kernel.org/all/20200617165616.52241bde@oasis.local.home/
But this fails sh arch because their linker script is included in their
compressed image that does not define arch_ftrace_ops_list_func at all
sh4-linux-ld:arch/sh/boot/compressed/../../kernel/vmlinux.lds:32: undefined symbol `arch_ftrace_ops_list_func' referenced in expression
Included a stub by that name in the misc.c to allow the code to
compile and link, even though it's not used.
This is similar to what was done for ftrace_stub:

signal/sh: Use force_sig(SIGKILL) instead of do_group_exit(SIGKILL)
Today the sh code allocates memory the first time a process uses
the fpu. If that memory allocation fails, kill the affected task
with force_sig(SIGKILL) rather than do_group_exit(SIGKILL).
Calling do_group_exit from an exception handler can potentially lead
to dead locks as do_group_exit is not designed to be called from
interrupt context. Instead use force_sig(SIGKILL) to kill the
userspace process. Sending signals in general and force_sig in
particular has been tested from interrupt context so there should be
no problems.
